2 -> FUTURE UPDATES (now non-existant)

This section is basically where I put all the updates that I hope to cram
in to this guide

-> Table describing the differences of point scoring from the PS2 version
  instead of having it numbered, I'm sure that would make this guide
  more convenient.
-> Update the EA Tips section because I KNOW that I haven't got them all
-> Maybe add my own tips to help you get those better scores in races.
-> Go to Hawaii, because I feel like it

3 -> INTRODUCTION

Welcome to my guide, although it is not obvious (how would you know?)
this is my first stab at writing a guide on EA's hugely popular game, Need
For Speed: Hot Pursuit 2. The main focus of this guide is obviously the point
scoring system in the game. I will describe the differences of point scoring
compared to the PS2 version (reason being that the only other version of the
game I have played is on the PS2, not because I hate the X Box or Gamecube).
If anyone who has played Hot Pursuit 2 on X Box or Gamecube, please email
me about what you get points for in races, this would be greatly appreciated
and the contributor will get due credits and earn a place in my Credits
Section.

This being my first guide, I am willing to accept feedback on how I can
improve on this, this can range from errors, contributions, etc. My email
is supplied above but in case you are too lazy to scroll up, then my email
is [email protected], make sure that you put the subject as
"HP2-SCORING" (without the quotation marks) or else I will most likely
delete it.

4 -> GAME OVERVIEW

This part assumes that you are not a veteran to Hot Pursuit 2 but more
rather leaning towards the newbie type, ok, so lets start.

__________POINTS

Points in Hot Pursuit 2 are used to purchase cars and tracks, unlike the
PS2 version, you must purchase your car, kind of like GT3 except you don't
tune the car. Once you buy the car, its yours, you can use it in Single
Race Mode, Lap Knockout or Tournament. You cannot use your car in Hot
Pursuit Mode, Be The Cop Mode, Championship Mode. Points in the PC version
are gained by outrunning police, winning races and leading laps in a race.
Cars cost from as low as 500 points to 170 000 points. As explained before,
these points are used to purchase cars and tracks. The tracks that you buy
are usually in the mid price range, with the good tracks costing about
60 000 points to 100 000 points.

A good tactic is to play through Championship Mode or
Hot Pursuit Mode, doing this lets you try out cars and tracks that are
locked from you. To buy tracks or cars, scroll to the item in question and
press the unlock button in the bottom right hand corner, if you have enough
points, a confirmation dialog will ask you if you want to purchase the item,
select yes or no. Selecting Yes means that the car/track is now yours!
If you didn't have enough points for the item in question, a dialog box
will come up saying that you do not have enough points. Solution?
Get more points!

__________CONTROLS

Below is the basic default controller configuration for the game:

ACCELERATE: UP
TURN LEFT: LEFT
TURN RIGHT: RIGHT
HANDBRAKE: SPACE
BRAKE: DOWN
HORN: H
RESET: R
LOOK BACK: B
SHIFT UP (MANUAL ONLY): A
SHIFT DOWN (MANUAL ONLY): Z

And this is my recommended controller configuration:

ACCELERATE: UP
TURN LEFT: LEFT
TURN RIGHT: RIGHT
HANDBRAKE: DOWN
BRAKE: SPACE
HORN: H
RESET: ENTER
LOOK BACK: S
SHIFT UP (MANUAL ONLY): A
SHIFT DOWN (MANUAL ONLY): Z

As you can see, my recommended controller configuration is slightly
different from the default, but it works nicely for people who are
used to alot of different driving games.

__________CHOOSING A CAR

Choosing a car to race in Single Mode, Lap Knockout Mode or Tournament
is pretty easy if you have experience in the game. If you are racing
on a twisty course, then make sure you use a car that has good handling,
not speed. A car like the Lotus Elise would be a good choice. For tracks
that are long and have little turns, choose a car that has superior
speed, a Viper GTS or Mclaren F1 LM would also be a good choice.
(Top Tip: Pick a stylish colour!)

>>
Well, I think that about wraps up the Game Overview section, if there
is anything you want me to add, then you can get me on IM or email.

5 -> EA TIPS

These tips are straight from the loading screens in the game itself, EA
gets the full credit for this one (Note: I may not have included every EA Tip
in the game, apologies):

> Working you way through the event trees is a great way to try out
 locked cars and events
> Spin out aggressive cops by slamming into their back side panels
> The fastest car isn't always the best, pick a car that has suitable
 handling for the track you're racing on
> Manual may be more difficult, but can yield greater results if done
 properly
> Remember, the harder the difficulty, the more NFS points you will score
> Looks are important, but in the end raw speed is all that's going to get
 you out of a tight scrape
> The look back feature is great for finding speeders that you sped past
 in Be The Cop Mode
> Use the hand-brake to throw the back-end of your car around a tight turn
> Save your NFS points to buy the car and tracks that appeal to you most
> If you want to get back into the race quickly after being wiped out,
 press the reset key to respawn in the centre of the road and get back
 into the race
> Don't hit the smoking barrels dropped by the helicopters or they'll
 explode and send you flying
> Drive unlocked tracks in Free Run to find all the shortcuts to help
 you in more difficult races
> In Be The Cop mode, if you hit a speeder hard enough, you can bust
 him in one hit
> Different directions of a track offer a completely different experience,
 try all four variations

More tips may be added as time progresses

6 -> DIFFERENCES FROM THE PS2 SCORING SYSTEM

Well, in terms of gameplay, Hot Pursuit 2 on PC is not that different from
the PS2 version. The changes are many, but some are hidden, like the fact
that you can modify cars, and that, but I won't go into full detail about
that in this guide. I will list the differences here in random order,
they will also be numbered at your convenience:

1)Firstly, every time you complete a race in the PS2 version,
you will get points for racing a "Clean Lap". A Clean Lap is when you
manage to complete a lap without your car being damaged. This feature
is not in PC version of the game, although suspect this is because it
is harder to control the cars in the PC version.

2)Secondly, in the PS2 version, every time you get big air, or basically
stay in the air for one second or more, you will get points for doing so,
and the camera even goes into a special slow motion thing, showing your
car in the, in all its glory. Again, this is non-existent in the
PC version of the game although you still get the camera
slow-motion thing showing your car.

3)In the PS2 version of the game, every time you run a
roadblock or a spikestrip, you will get points for doing so and
the camera will also do a special slow-motion showing your car when
you bash into the stationary cop cars, similar to when you get air.
Yet again, this feature is non-existent in the PC version,
the camera will still do the slow-motion thing but you simply won't
get the points.

4)Lastly, if you started a race in first, second, or third position
(tournament races or championship races only), you will get bonus
points for you extra effort, guess what? That's right, it's not in the
PC version.

5)In the PC version of HP2, every time you outlast the cops in
Hot Pursuit Mode or Single Race, you will get an extra 200 bonus
points, I think this feature is also on the PS2 version.

6)Also, one very welcome feature in the PC version is that instead of
winning cars and tracks every time you complete a Hot Pursuit Race
or Championship race you will get a number of points, with the most
being 75,000. Of course this means that you won't have as many cars
or tracks as the PS2 player might have, but you will have more control
on what kind of car you want as well as the track. For example, in the
PS2 version, you will have to complete event tree 30 to unlock the
McLaren F1, however, play the PC version, with a bit of time and
point scoring, you can get the F1 before you do any Hot Pursuit
or Championship races! This, to me, is pretty nifty and I
like it, you may have fewer cars, but they probably will be better.

7)OK, if you ever finished a race in first on the PC version, you will
get extra bonus points, this feature is also in the PS2 version of the
game and is also very nifty.

So, it would seem that the PS2 would end up with alot more points
on the game on the PC version, right? Unfortunately, yes.
Although there are more advantages to winning in the PC version
(car modifying, etc), it seems you will get a truckload more points
on the PS2 version. Also, the cost of the cars in the PS2 version
are *extremely* high, for example, to get the NFS version of the
Dodge Viper in the PS2 version is somewhere around 1,500,000 points
(that's a hell of alot of points), whereas in the PC version,
it will cost you around 100 000 points (see? The PC version
has its advantages).

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
7 -> METHODS OF SCORING
Well, it would seem that it is hard to score on the PC version and much
easier to score on the PS2 version.  Although setting the difficulty
on harder levels will have no effect on the scoring system (email me
if I am wrong) on the PS2 version, doing this on the PC would
increase the amount of points you get, see Table 1.1 for more details.
-->TABLE 1.1<--
---------------------------->SCORING METHODS<-----------------------------
DIFFICULTY    |  WIN A RACE   |      OUTRUN THE COPS      |  LEAD A LAP  |
__________________________________________________________________________
BEGINNER      |  1000 points  |       100 points*         |   50 points  |
__________________________________________________________________________
INTERMEDIATE  |  1500 points  |       250 points*         |   75 points  |
__________________________________________________________________________
ADVANCED      |  2000 points  |       600 points*         |  100 points  |
__________________________________________________________________________
* Minimum amount of points gained, if there is more than 1 cop car chasing,
point value may increase. (Email me if I happen to be wrong about this!).
OK, now you've seen the table, what's the best way to score? It would seem
that playing single race on Advanced will work, finishing a race on
Advanced(come in first place, lead a lap) will result in an approximate
point total of 2700. So, if we were to increase the amount of laps to 8,
use a fast car, (something like a McLaren would work), the minimum amount
of points gained for the race(provided, you led all laps and came first
while outrunning the cops) would be somewhere around 3400 points per race.
While this may not seem much in short term, outrunning more cops,
drive a faster car, and keep at it, you should find yourself getting most
of the cars you want. Remember the point bonus you get when you win a race,
getting maximum points plus the "Win A Race"
bonus, you could get around 5400 points in a race. (Most I ever got was
around 20,500 points, 8 laps, used a Murcielago, one opponent as Elise).
(Besides, the cars in the PC version aren't alot of cash, for example,
to buy a Lamborghini VT 6.0 will cost you about 30,000 points).
-> METHODS OF SCORING
---> CHAMPIONSHIP
Championship races offer you an excellent amount of points, these points go
from as low as 1500 right up to an astronomical 150000 points. Now that would
be alot. Keep in mind that if you get a gold on a championship race, you
cannot redo them to get the "Gold Medal Point Bonus" (from here on GMPB),
but you will still get the standard points (winning the race, lead a lap).
If you really need those points though, one way to get alot of points (Note:
I have not tried this myself, someone email me if I am wrong about this) is
to finish a race and deliberately get a bronze, then do it again and get a
silver, then again and get a gold. This should leave you with at least 10000
points per event. Doing this technique on Event tree 30 will leave you with
an absolute truckload of points.
---> COPS
Cops are funny, they drive like drunken monkeys on the road.
This isn't a bad thing as you have a slight advantage over them (in brains,
ehehe). If you stop, they will stop also in front of you (maybe a couple of
hundred metres), if you stay still for a while, they will reverse in an
attempt to catch you, do this and when they are reversing, pump on the
accelerator, driving around them. By the time that they catch up to,
the blue timing meter will have finished, leaving you with some points
and no cops. Also, beware the helicopters, spike strips, roadblocks
and the faster cop cars, I shouldn't have to say that but hey, who
knows, some of you might need that advice....
--> TRACKS
Table 1 is the most accurate I can get to the approximate point amount
received. The amount of points you receive depends (not heavily) on
the kind of track that you choose. I find that the long twisty ones are
usually the best, you can lose the cops easily due to the amount of
bends and you might find it a little easier to lead those laps. Try
not to use tracks that are just the "1-go" (no laps, just a
straight race, beginning to end), instead, go for the closed-in circuits
(where you can set the number of laps that you want to race), they are
much better and offer you better chances at getting those high scores.
10 -> QUICKNOTE
> If anyone has any contributions, they will be greatly appreciated and the
 contributor will earn a place in my credits section
> If anyone has information concering the Gamecube or X Box version of the
 game then please send me some information on it like how many points you
 get for so and so. That will be enough information for me. If not, then
 I will email you asking for more information concerning the game.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

11 -> OUTRO

Well, I think that makes my guide just about complete, I have covered most of
the point scoring thing in the game and by now you should basically know how
to score very well (I am hoping so). Remember, if you have any comments,
contributions, complaints etc, send it to the email address supplied at
the beginning of this document. Make sure you put the subject as
"HP2-SCORING"(Without quotations). And please don't ask senseless questions
like "Should I drive an McLaren F1 or McLaren F1 LM? I will simply ignore
them or on the odd occasion, reply with a stupid answer like "Drive the
one with bigger tyres (being the McLaren F1 LM)". Ah, what the heck.
I think its time for me
to sleep and I bid you farewell now, you can expect more updates in the
future.

Have Fun!
