Game: The Fool's Errand
Platform: PC

Well, well, well. I thought it would never happen, but
here it is. My first FAQ.
First off, I know that there is already another one for this
game at
http://www.balmoralsoftware.com/fool/fool.htm, but it
REEKS of spoilers and there wasn't one here at Gamefaqs anyway.
Now fortunately, I am here to fix all that. I am going to try
as hard as I can not to give anything critical away.
Okay...what next? Oh yeah. Since I'm the one who wrote this
FAQ, that makes the contents copyrighted! By me! w00t! So
if you should ever rip anything off this FAQ behind my back,
not only will the law not forgive you, but your parents will
hate you forever, your teachers will give you F's, your friends
will die, volcanoes will erupt, rivers will burn, skies will
fall, and somebody's mangy chihuahua will come scratching at your
door for all eternity.
Okay, maybe just the first thing I mentioned. But seriously folks.
It's my FAQ. And I've got to keep things legal.
Finally, if for whatever reason you'd like to contact me, be it
to comment on this FAQ, say hi, propose marriage, or anything of
the sort, my e-mail address is at the top. Except for incoherence,
dirty mail, death threats, or asking to use this FAQ on your site.
These will be rejected.
If you can't find this game, I am proud to tell you that it is
available for download as freeware from www.fools-errand.com.
Let's go on to a rundown of the game. You are 'the fool', on a
journey to find 14 treasures. Along the way, you are faced with
a series of puzzles, some hard, some not. Another feature in
this game is the 80-some chapter story, which will factor in to
solving some of the later puzzles.
Speaking of which, here are what kinds of puzzles this game offers:
Jigsaw puzzle: Simply rearrange parts of a picture to reveal a
scene.
Hidden letter puzzle: Here you must make 3 letters from polygons
revealed by pressing any of 16 lettered buttons. Only the right
ones, shown in brackets, will form the letters.
Fill-in puzzle: You must fill in boxes with letters to make words.
Some have clues as to what letters you need, some have the letters
hidden in the picture.
Decryption puzzle: You are to solve a cryptogram, sometimes with
guide words to help you. Say the guide word is HBBS=FOOL. H would
be F, B is O, and S is L. The letters you change in the puzzle
will also change in the guide word, and if the two match, those
letters have the right ones substitued.
Maze: Move or drag the white circle through a maze.
Word search: You should know what this is. The only thing to note
is that the words are never reversed or diagonal.
Word construction: Click the buttons at the bottom of the screen
in the right order to form a word or words. Each button affects
the words in their own way.
Letterbox: A 3x3 grid with letters in it. You have to arrange
them so they form six words, three each going vertically and
horizontally. The center letter is always right, so you can't
do anything with it.
Word block: Place a group of lettered blocks into a rectangle
so that they form a given number of words. Only the arrangement
of the blocks will be shown.
Crossword scramble: Unscramble sets of letters to form intersecting
words. Clues are sometimes provided.
Word scramble: Rearrange letters to form a word. This will ultimately
form key words.
Other: Any type of puzzle not mentioned will be explained when you
come upon it in this FAQ.

81. The Book of Thoth
-A scroll with an eye on it.
After you've solved the Sun puzzle, you will now be ready to tackle
the treasures. The only trouble is that these are some -tricky-
puzzles, so unless you're desperate, don't look any further than here.
*steps off into the kitchen for a little nutrition break*
Hm hm hm...
Still there? Okay. By the way, remember those rows of blank
boxes you saw after finishing the Keys of Thoth? This is
where the names of the 14 treasures go once you've found them.
That's right, you -still- haven't gotten any of the treasures yet.
But remember, I'm here for you!
Before I go into all this, let me tell you what you can do with
the Sun map now:
-Hold ALT and you can see where you can click for clue puzzles.
-Hold SHIFT and hover the cursor over a section of the Sun and you
can see that section's name.
-Click on the eye scroll to go to the treasure list puzzle.
Let's start at the top line.
1. The Kings are confused.
Naturally...whoa whoa whoa, wait a minute! This is actually a clue!
Check the King chapters under V and you'll find that they each
have a letter in brown. These are some of the letters that you'll
need for the name of this treasure. Only four so far, but we need
eight more. Where will we find them? Hmm...well, what do Kings rule
over? You guessed it, kingdoms! You'll find four more letters in
the Pentacle, Cup, Sword, and Wand chapters. Four to go! See that
2x2 square on the Sun with the large black letters on them? These
are the King sections, and ergo the last four letters! Now that
you have the twelve letters, unscramble them for the name of this
treasure!
2. Within the Kingdom of the Pentacles...
..is what? Well, for one, we don't even know what exactly to classify
as a kingdom! Wait! Notice how all the castles have a symbol on the
next section from them? That's it! Ok, what you must do first is
find the 3x8 grid on the Sun, near the pentacle. Found it? Good.
This is one of the clue puzzles. And it would appear that only 3-letter
words fit in each line. And where did we see 3-letter words? Why, in
the chapters that happen to correspond with the eight sections that go
outward from the grid on the Sun! These would be:
-The Blacksmith
-The Cathedral
-The Chapel
-The Humbug
-The World
-Strength
-Temperance
-The Hanged Man
Take the key words from each chapter and enter them into the grid. If
in the right order, the lighter letters will spell the name of this
treasure.
3. The Queens are confused.
Not them too. Hmm. Well, let's try the same thing as before. I will
tell you that the Queen sections on the Sun have castles on them. Let's
drop by, shall we? In the Queen of Wands, we find four letters. In the
Queen of Pentacles is four more letters. The Queen of Cups has another
four letters, and the Queen of Swords has the last three. Put these all
together and unscramble them for this treasure.
4. Within the Kingdom of the Wands...
What you should go to now is a 6x4 grid at the bottom of the map. The
words that you will need are in the chapters of the four sections that
contain the grid, and the pair of 3-letter words in each section go in
that corner. The light words will be this treasure.
5. The Path of Six is disguised.
And where did we see something about six? Why, in Three Ships! Check
there and you wil find two key letters. This chapter mentions something
about chasing a fish. The same one as in the Page of Cups, perhaps? Take
two more key letters and find mention of two swords. This
would be the Chant. Take three key letters from here and move on to
the chapter with a family and a boat. It is...the Boat, or Das Boot if
you're German. Get another two key letters and find something about
a broken wheel. If you read the Chariot, you'd know it's this one.
Pick up yet another two key letters from here. Don't worry, one more
set to go! The last reference is to a thief stealing seven. Sounds
like...guess what, the Thief! The last two key letters may be found
here. Now that you have followed the 'path of six' and gotten all
the key letters, put them all in the order you found them and then go
to the Sun map. See those bluish rows of letters? These are decoders.
One of them, if used on these letters, will give you the name of this
treasure.
6. The mystic chant is disguised.
Sound familiar? This 'chant' may be found in The Stream. Enter it into
another of the Sun's decoders for this treasure.
7. The Knights and Pages are confused.
Hoo boy, could it be something in the water? No matter. Look on the Sun
for the Knight and Page sections. You should notice a small yellow letter
on each of them. Unscramble the letters for this treasure.
8. The Maze of Thorns is disguised.
This will be another maze. Unlike the others, this has some RPG-type
elements, like finding items and clearing paths. I won't supply a map,
but I will tell you the letters that appear when you're done must be
entered into a Sun decoder for the next treasure.
9. The Hierophant is disguised and confused.
Well...let's take a look at the Hierophant chapter, shall we? Here
we find not letters, but three numbers. What you are to do with these
numbers is convert them to letters according to the key of numbers
and letters on the Sun. But we need more numbers! We learn in the
Hierophant of 'four others coming before...'. Four other chapters?
These would be the ones before Hierophant:
-The Cloud
-Vision
-Enchantment
-Abandoned Cups
A total of ten more numbers may be found in these chapters, added
to the three from Hierophant making thirteen. Now, convert them
into letters like I told you, and then unscramble them for this
treasure.
10. If justice be done...
What justice? Oh, right, Justice! Look under that chapter and
you'll have the clue about the Emperor 'taking what is his from
what is hers'. But what to take? Let's ask them...
In the Emperor, you will find seven letters in brown. This must
be what is 'his'. But what could 'hers' be? Under the Empress,
you'll find two sets of two words. Put all these four words
together, then remove the Emperor's seven letters. Unscramble
what's left for this treasure.
11. Within the Kingdom of the Swords...
Direct your attention to a 5x5 grid on the upper-left of the Sun.
If you look in chapters for the sections at each corner of the
grid, you'll get clues as to what letters to put there. We'll
start with the upper left, the High Priestess. She mentions
an inscription on an 'evil dark tower' and the letters on the
'banner of death'. She would be referring to the Tower and
Death. Put the pairs of letters you find in these chapters
in order in the upper-left section of the grid.
The upper-right section would be the Sentry. He tells you
to 'take the blood of a man killed by ten and smear it upon
the weapon of an outnumbered warrior'. Hm? Could this be
the Warrior? Look in this chapter and you'll find a three-
letter word. One more. What about the Dead Warrior? Ah,
yes, because there is another three-letter word here. Okay!
Put the words in this corner of the grid.
To the lower-left of the grid is the Nightmare. The man that
this guy talks about sings a haunting song. It's the Singer!
Look here for three pairs of letters, and then enter them in
this corner.
One more corner of the grid to fill, and it's the Dream. We
meet someone who has a recurring dream of a giant wheel with
three mystical words on it. What does it mean? No, he's not
a Pat Sajak fan. Near the lower-left of the Sun is the Wheel
of Fortune. Click on the wheel to view it. There's the three
words we need to fill the grid! Enter them, as you see them.
Now that the grid is filled, rearrange the words within each
section if you have to, and th lighter words will spell the
name of this treasure!
12. Follow the straight path.
Huh. Sound easy? Heck no! The chapter before the Straight
Path, the Hermit, tells you to 'locate a J and proceed from
there'. But how? You'll find the directions in the chapter
after it, Judgement. The puzzle that you must complete
involves a word search-type field, but you'll only be finding
two words here, and to do this you must follow the directions
starting at a J. The result will be the name of this treasure.
13: Within the Kingdom of the Cups...
For this one, you will need the diagram on the upper-right of
the Sun. In it, you have to enter a series of words
which will reveal the name of the treasure down the middle.
But of course, we must find these words. The Children will
tell you to find the 'word of a star' and the 'word of the
pyramids'. The sections of the Sun with the pyramids, the
Page of Wands, Knight of Wands, and Pyramids, each have a
letter that makes a word. The Star has another whole word
that you will need. That's two, now we just need ten more.
Another word may be found under the Couple, but this also
mentions 'the work of the Devil and Despair'. Let's check
these chapters...ah yes, two more words. This makes five.
After the Couple comes the Dancers. This chapter has not
one, but two more words. That's seven. The next one,
Family, has a word. That's eight. It also mentions 'fertile
seeds'. The Knight of Pentacles is where you want to go
now. Three words are here, but you must unscramble them
for names of grains. We have eleven so far! One to go!
The last word may be found in the one after Family, Not-A-
Merchant. That's all twelve! Enter them into the diagram,
making sure the words are in the right places, for this
treasure.
14. Eight in the land are disguised.
You may be wondering what those big yellow letters on the
Sun are for. They are for this last puzzle. Put these
letters in order of where they appear on the path and
enter them into a decoder for the last treasure.
With all these treasures finally gathered, it's time for the
finale!
Whew! That's it for this walkthrough, and I'm glad I'm
