It's been ten years. Ten years since this updated version of the game has been
released in Japan. Now, in 2019, the West finally gets to enjoy the definitive
version of this game and man, the wait was worth it. I played this game when it
came out on the 360, and then bought it again for the PS3 (in a language I did
not understand) when that came out, and I've purchased it again for the
Nintendo Switch. It's also available on XBOX ONE, PS4, and PC (FINALLY).
Those of you who just think there are a few new additions here and there are
in for a real treat. Tales of Vesperia Definitive Edition is by far the most
content-rich game in the series, and that's no exaggeration.
So, without further ado...
Welcome to the new and improved Yuri FAQ! Again! There aren't many changes
from the version of the guide made for the PS3 version, but I've added a
few things here and there to reflect what I've learned in the meantime.
This guide was made exclusively for the Definitive Edition. As such, I will
be using the official terminology for everything that's applicable. This means
that the fan-translation, while a superb effort and a monumental labour of
love, will not be reflective of the names used in this guide.
Overall, while this FAQ will still be pretty general in nature, this version of
the FAQ will try to be as exhaustive as possible.

3: VERSION HISTORY [VERSI]
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Version 1.0 : The FAQ is finished. All original features are included, FAQ is
subject to change.
Version 1.5 : I changed some things, namely the altered artes chart, and added
some sections. Nothing TOO big, but big enough to warrant a .5
update rather than a .1 update.
Version 1.6 : I changed my email address, because bots have been attacking the
Yahoo! one... and, it seems that Tales of Vesperia is going to be
released for the PS3! Well, I'll update my FAQ when I learn
(or play) the PS3 version because it seems that Yuri is going to
get a new Mystic Arte, and possibly new equipment, skills, and
other stuff. I won't ignore the PS3 users. :)
Version 1.7 : The video example has been replaced by a nice, spoiler-free video.
I fixed a few mistakes on my part, and stuff.
Version 2.0 : A lot of stuff has been re-written, and the PS3 extras have been
added in to this version of the guide.
Version 3.0 : A complete overhaul of the FAQ. The artes list and skill list were
completely revamped, removing the dumb humour while adding a ton
of new, relevant information.
Version 3.1 : Fixed some formatting errors, and hopefully the Japanese shows up
correctly.
Version 3.2 : The previous version's Japanese didn't show up correctly at all,
unfortunately. Hopefully this resubmission will fix any errors.
I've also added another section to the guide that might be
important.
Version 4.0 : No need for the Japanese titles anymore, now that the Definitive
Edition is out! Hooray! I've changed all the names of the titles,
artes, skills and all other instances of fan-translated names to
the official ones featured in the Definitive Edition. I have also
added in some stuff I learned in the interim.
Version 4.1 : Fixed some formatting issues and other stuff.
4.1: CHARACTER INFORMATION [FAQ01]
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Name : Yuri Lowell
Sex : Male
Hair : Black
Eyes : Black
Age : 21
Height : 180 cm (5 feet 11 inches)
Weapons : Swords, Axes
Sub : Gauntlets
Armor : Mails
Helms : Helmets, Hats
Food? : Sweets
Yuri is your average Tales protagonist in terms of function: he's swift, hits
hard, and is an absolute TP hog until you can slap a Faerie Ring on him or get
some TP-restoration or conservation skills. What separates Yuri from other
Tales protagonists like Lloyd or Luke is that he's already fairly well-
developed and doesn't have a period of time in-game in which he needs to search
for himself. His development is a bit more understated and serves more to help
his allies develop, especially Karol and Flynn.
In battle, Yuri works best in one-on-one scenarios, for the most part. He's
likely to take a lot of damage if he's surrounded. Mobile artes like Ghost Wolf
or Dragon Swarm allow Yuri to dodge incoming attacks fairly well, so make good
use of them. His Tension skills paired with his Ability Plus, Ability Chain and
Super Chain skills make him the game's premier combo king, which is aided by
the fact that most of his artes hit multiple times.
His Combination skills will allow him to deal great amounts of damage very
easily, pulling off several million damage with no sweat at all thanks to an
exploit involving Brutal Fang, the Combination skills, and his second Mystic
Arte.
Overall, if you're looking for a fast, powerful and agile swordsman who
absolutely breaks the game in half--to an even greater extent than Rita, in my
opinion--you're in for a treat. Few characters in Tales games come close to how
overpowered Yuri is--though recently dethroned by Ludger in Xillia 2--and this
guide will help you in making the most of his abilities.
Most generic functions that I don't have much to say about like the Menu button
or the Target button won't be mentioned here.
THE ATTACK BUTTON
Attack : 3-9 Hits
Yuri will slash normally in front of him. It's good a good rate of attack and
will hit most enemies above him, as well.
Attack + Forwards : 3-9 Hits
Arin will interchange between thrusts and punches. Yuri will travel farther
when attacking, but the enemy will be pushed away slightly each time.
Attack + Up : 3-9 Hits
Yuri will slash upwards into the air, while stepping forward slightly with
each slash. This is generally better for hitting enemies in the air, but it's
a bit too slow to warrant its use that much since normally attacking will
also hit enemies in the air.
Attack + Down : 6-12 Hits
Yuri will attack in low, sweeping motions. The attacks are nice and fast,
and because of the higher hit count, Yuri will restore more TP through
regular attacks. This makes skills like Combo Voltage even better. Later
hits of the combo allowed due to Combo Plus skills will knock the enemy
down, but you can follow up with a Free-Run Attack.
L2 + Attack : 1 Hit
Yuri performs a low sweeping slash. This can chain from regular hits and
chain into artes. Downed enemies will also be forced to stand, which is
crucial for extending combos on downed enemies, especially Burst artes and
the like. It's a free hit, so you should get used to taking advantage of
using it. For the sake of the guide, I will call the the Free-Run Attack.
Down + Attack + Air : 1 Hit - "Dragon Buster"
Yuri suddenly slashes toward the ground, plunging the enemy along with him
if they're caught in the slash. This requires the Dragon Buster skill.
It can't normally chain after artes, so Over Limit is required to
get the most use out of the skill.
THE GUARD BUTTON
Guard : "Guard"
Yuri will guard while the button is pressed, slicing all physical damage taken
to a lower amount. Guarding will also prevent staggering upon receiving
physical damage. However, magic artes will still deal full damage and stagger
Yuri. Make sure to use Magic Guard instead when you're going to be hit with a
spell.
Guard + Down : "Magic Guard"
Yuri will create a magic bubble around him while holding the Square button
and holding the control stick down. This will slice all magical damage taken
to a lower amount and prevent staggering. Physical artes will still deal full
damage and stagger Yuri. The Magic Guard skill must be active.
Guard + Forward : "Critical Guard"
Yuri, while guarding, will shift forward slightly. If done at the correct
time, enemy attacks will be nullified. The Critical Guard skill must be
active.
Guard + Backwards : "Backstep"
Yuri will jump backwards slightly. This is a useful maneuver to evade attacks.
Yuri will no longer be guarding during the backstep, so be careful when
using it. The Backstep skill must be active. If Landing Step is active,
Yuri can repeatedly backstep in quick succession, with the right timing.
If the Step Combo skill is active, press the Attack button to follow the
backstep with a jumping slash.
Guard + Free Fall : "Recover"
Yuri will recover mid-air if blown away by enemy attacks or hit by the Over
Limit burst upon activation. You can also recover shortly after hitting the
ground in certain situations. Note that sometimes it's better to wait for
Yuri recover normally as recovering could subject you to damage against the
more combo-heavy bosses like Zagi. The Recover skill must be active.
FREE-RUN BUTTON
Free Run : "Free Run"
This will simply allow Yuri to move beyond the axis allowed when not in free
run.
Free Run + Attack : "Free-Run Attack"
Yuri performs a low sweeping slash. This can chain from regular hits and
chain into artes. Downed enemies will also be forced to stand, which is
crucial for extending combos on downed enemies, especially Burst artes and
the like. It's a free hit, so you should get used to taking advantage of
using it. For the sake of the guide, I will call the the Free-Run Attack.
Free Run + Guard : "Manual Cancel"
This technique can only be used in Manual mode. After certain actions (artes,
regular attacks, etc) hold the Free Run button and hold the Guard button
to cancel the recovery animation of whichever attack you're currently doing.
This technique has a lot of versatility - it can be used to recovery and
guard yourself more quickly after finishing a combo; it can be used to chain
together an unconventional sequence of artes without the use of Over Limit
or certain skills like Super Chain, Ability Plus, etc.
CONTROL MODES
Manual
This mode, while it sacrifices the ability to chain combos together in
certain ways, gives Yuri certain abilities such as Manual Canceling and the
ability to use projectile artes without Yuri stupidly walking up toward the
enemy, rending the distance fighting certain artes provide useless. Yuri can
also use Brutal Fang to trigger Mystic Artes without touching the enemy only
in Manual Mode.
Semi-Auto
While this sacrifices certain abilities (and removes a Grade bonus at the end
of battle), this allows Yuri to chain attacks together in a more effective
manner, especially against highly mobile enemies like Zagi or some of the
Giganto monsters. It's up to your discretion to decide which control mode
you should use.
Auto
If you're a true trailblazer you can use Auto to have the computer decide
what Yuri will do.

4.3: GENERAL STRATEGIES AND POINTERS [FAQ03]
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
-> Yuri is most effective in one-on-one situations, due to his melee-oriented
artes. He has some artes that allow him to be mobile such as Ghost Wolf
which can be great for avoiding incoming damage. Be sure to utilize any
movement options you might have if the situation calls for it.
-> Prioritize taking out enemy spellcasters, as they can really punish Yuri for
his lack of magic defense. Magic Guard skills help Yuri deal with incoming
spells so make sure to take advantage of them!
-> Yuri's amazing and all but he's a gigantic TP hog and most slap a Faerie Ring
onto him to cut TP costs. Skills like Combo Voltage should be prioritized or
be prepared to sink a lot of Orange and Pineapple Gels into Yuri.
-> Yuri has access to good projectiles such as Azure Edge and Final Gale. Avoid
mob situations by spamming these when necessary.
-> Yuri can't really handle mobs all that well. Artes that can slightly deal
with mobs like Crushing Eagle or Guardian Field only have small ranges and
very often leave him open to attack before and after performing the arte.
Dhaos Blast, which is likely his best arte for dealing with groups of
enemies, is only available after completing the 200-Man Melee and needs to
be equipped in order to use it, which could be replaced with better
accessories like the Krona's Symbol or the Miracle Bangle.
-> Speaking of Accessories, this game boasts a wide variety of them, but there
are a few that are clearly better than the rest, especially for Yuri.
-> Stun Talisman : Prevents Stun.
-> Faerie Ring : Reduces TP costs by 50%.
-> Emerald Ring : Reduces TP costs by 33%.
-> Barbatos' Ring : Increases Physical Attack drastically,
but prohibits all item use for the
duration of the battle.
-> Risky Ring : Artes only cost 1 TP, but dramatically
decreases Physical and Magical Defense.
-> Ultimate Red Cape : Absorbs Fire/Earth/Light, but is weak
to Wind/Water/Darkness.
-> Ultimate Blue Cape : Absorbs Wind/Water/Darkness, but is weak
to Fire/Earth/Light.
-> Krona's Symbol : Protects against all status ailments.
-> Imperial Prestige : Increases the rate at which the Over Limit
Gauge fills.
-> Dhaos' Cape : Alters Destruction Field to Dhaos Blast.
-> Miracle Bangle : Restores 10% of HP and TP upon defeating
an enemy.
-> Once you get it, Glory should be an absolute priority. It's arguably the best
defensive skill in the game and only Yuri has access to it. Make sure he
stays on the ground, though: he no longer has Glory once his feet are off
the ground. It's little wonder later games such as Xillia called this skill
"Grounded Stance".
-> Yuri's Blazor Edge: Abyssion is fire elemental, which can be annoying when
enemies you're fighting are immune to fire. If you still want to run with
the Fell Arm, use artes that "dilute" the type of elemental damage you're
dealing like Azure Edge, Azure Storm, Guardian Field, Destruction Field,
and others to not have your attacks nullified, or worse, absorbed.
-> Make careful use of the Recover skill. Many of this game's bosses can combo
you very well if you're too trigger-happy with recovering. Sometimes it's
better to wait for Yuri to get up normally to evade damage, as Yuri does
have invincibility frames upon getting up.
caps out at 100% at 9,999 uses.
Name : Destruction Field
TP Cost : 12
Attribute : Fire
Hits : 1
FS Symbol : Red
Alters : Dhaos Blast (Dhaos' Cape must be equipped and is not learnable)
happens with swords.
Name : Shining Fang
TP Cost : 15
Attribute : None
Hits : 5-6
FS Symbol : Blue
Alters : Shining Fang Drop (Athenor)
Desc: Slash with a spinning sword. Makes swordplay look like a game! If
Hits : 2
FS Symbol : Green
Alters : None
Desc: Lunge through the enemy with an attack, then quickly turn around to
finish with a slash from behind. The timing to chain into another arte
This is a good arte for evading damage and crossing up enemies.
Name : Dhaos Blast
TP Cost : 12
Element : None
Hits : 1
FS Symbol : Green
Altered : Destruction Field (Equip Dhaos' Cape)
Desc: Charge energy into your first and slam it into the ground, creating a
shockwave that sends enemies flying. This arte cannot be learned, though
it is Yuri's best area-of-effect arte due to its speed, size, and power.
This is considered a Base Arte by the game, despite being "altered" from
another arte.
Name : Divine Wolf
TP Cost : 0
Element : None
Hits : 7 / 8 / 9
FS Symbol : Green
Alters : Divine Wolf - Blaze (Hell Fire, Chain)
Divine Wolf - Crush (Athenor, Crucible)
Divine Wolf - Storm (Gale, Alembic)
Divine Wolf - Flood (Great Deluge, Dispersion)
Desc: Slash in quick, circular motions. No one can withstand the clashing
sword! The amount of hits dealt depends on the Over Limit level
Yuri is in while using the arte, capping off at Over Limit level 3
and 9 hits. The 3rd level of Divine Wolf sends enemies very far away from
Yuri, so chaining attacks after it will be difficult.
Name : Divine Wolf - Blaze
TP Cost : 0
Element : Fire
Hits : 9 / 10 / 13
FS Symbol : Green
Altered : Divine Wolf (Hell Fire, Chain)
Desc: Slash in blazing, circular motions. Sends enemies flying into the air.
Similar to Divine Wolf, the amount of hits dealt depends on Over Limit
level. At level 1 and 2, the enemy will be sent into the air. At level 3,
Yuri will slam the enemy down in a fiery inferno. It's possible to chain
most types of enemies into an infinite combo with this arte, but Divine
Wolf - Flood is superior and should be one you use instead.
Name : Divine Wolf - Crush
TP Cost : 0
Element : Earth
Hits : 6 / 7 / 11
FS Symbol : Blue
Altered : Divine Wolf (Athenor, Crucible)
Desc: Rend the ground with a powerful strikes from your sword, sending
stalagmites into the enemy. The amount of stalagmites raised and the
amount of hits dealt are based on Over Limit level, capping at Over
Limit level 3.
Name : Divine Wolf - Storm
TP Cost : 0
Element : Wind
Hits : 10 / 11 / 13
FS Symbol : Green
Altered : Divine Wolf (Gale, Alembic)
Desc: Slash with blindingly swift, circular motions. Unleash the power of the
storm upon the enemy. Similar to Divine Wolf and its Blaze variation, the
amount of hits dealt is based on Over Limit level.
Name : Divine Wolf - Flood
TP Cost : 0
Element : Water
Hits : 3 / 4 / 5
FS Symbol : Blue
Altered : Divine Wolf (Great Deluge, Dispersion)
Desc: Plunge your sword into the ground, causing an eruption of water all
around. The size of the arte and the amount of hits dealt are based on
Over Limit level, again capping at Over Limit level 3. Much like Divine
Wolf - Blaze, this arte can be chained into the infinite combo using
Yuri's Free-Run Attack after the enemy is knocked back to the ground.
4.4.5: MYSTIC ARTES [ART05]
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Name : Savage Wolf Fury
TP Cost : 0
Element : None
Hits : 23-40
FS Symbol : None
Alters : None
Desc: Tear into the enemy with an brutal assault of furious, destructive slashes
that ends with a burst of light, rending all enemies caught within the
blast asunder. If the Hit Plus skill is active, pressing the Attack
button rapidly will add more hits, up to a maximum of 40. If used upon
the second form of the final boss when its HP is low enough, Yuri will
automatically follow up with an additional attack that ends the battle
and fulfills the Secret Mission.
Name : Heavenly Bladewing
TP Cost : 0
Element : Light
Hits : 2
FS Symbol : None
Alters : None
Desc: Harness the power of the Vesperia No. 2 to slam the enemy with a gigantic
feather of light. Best used with Combination skills. Vesperia No. 2 must
be equipped and the game must have been completed once. Activate it by
holding the Attack and Artes button at the same time while in Over Limit
level 4 during any Arcane, Altered or Burst arte.
Name : Twin Wave
TP Cost : 0
Element : Light and Dark
Hits : 25
FS Symbol : None
Alters : None
Desc: Unleash a deadly combination attack between Yuri and Flynn that none
can withstand. Yuri's Azure Edge and Guardian Field must be used 100+
times, as do Flynn's Demon Fang and Guardian Field artes. Both must
have received the "Hope of the Town" titles. Both must be in Over Limit
level 4 and is activated by holding the Attack, Artes and Guard button
during any Arcane, Altered or Burst arte. Kind of a lame name for one
of the sickest Mystic Artes ever, but hey.
These are universal among all characters, but I thought it'd be useful if they
were also listed here. Generally, 31 points (NOT SP NEEDED) will suffice to
gain a Skill Symbol and, for the most part, will be effective in getting the
Skill Symbol you might want. However, that isn't the only requirement to get
a certain Skill Symbol. The requirements for when you have the required points
for Goldos but want Fleck are a bit more nebulous. In that case, having double
the amount of points in Attack-type skills would override Goldos with Fleck.
Generally, all skill symbols will work this way.
-> During your first visit in Nordopolica, go to the harbour
and see a scene where Yuri breaks up a fight. Speak to
the couple near the cauldron. Rest at the inn for Yuri
to learn Shining Eagle.
-> After getting Ba'ul, go to the oasis in Mantaic to speak
with Clay. Rest at the inn afterwards.
-> After everyone joins backf following the events at Zaude,
go the Royal Guard in Zaphias and speak with the man by
the the bench again (or witness a scene there--I've seen
conflicting reports regarding this. I had to speak with
the man).
-> After creating Undine, go to the Royal Quarter again and
either witness a scene or talk to the man again to earn
the title. Wow, what a doozy.
Name : True Knight
You only have one chance to win per playthrough, so make sure to
save before entering. To win, the character you enter must have
at least three stars on all recipes and must have mastered all
recipes that have effects that restore HP and TP. The best way to
grind recipes is to sleep at the inn in Aurnion and cook after
each rest. The item shop nearby will allow you to quickly restock
if you don't have the ingredients. Completing Aurnion will allow
you to buy a wider variety of ingredients, so make sure to do that
first.
Name : Kingdom Celeb
Costume? : No
Obtained : Yuri will gain this title during the Dark Enforcer subquest.
Name : Recollection Guardian
Costume? : No
Obtained : Obtained as part of the Recollection Guardian subquest:
-> After clearing Zaude and after everyone joins back, go
to the western shop in Dahngrest and talk to the guard.
Open the cell behind him and open the chest for a statue.
-> After getting all four spirits and seeing the events at
Capua Nor, go to Yumanju and speak with the man in the
top-left corner by the vending machines. If he's not
there, wait for Nam Cobanda Isle to open up and trigger
EVERY event there by speaking to everyone (some people
have trouble triggering the man in Yumanju's
appearance). You'll get the Tiara attachment for Estelle
for doing this.
-> Get three statues from the vending machines at Yumanju.
-> Once Flynn joins up, have Estelle equip the Tiara
attachment and then head to Zaphias. Hanks will appear
in the Lower Quarter to give you one statue.
-> Go to Nam Cobanda Isle. The 10-chip machines have one
statue, the 50-chip machine have two statues, the
100-chip machines have two statues, and the 500-chip
Name : Treasure Hunter
Costume? : No
Obtained : Earn the Recollection Guardian title and then speak to the cow
kid to the right of the entrance of Nam Combanda Isle. Then, find
86% of the treasure in the game. Note that chests found within
the Necropolis of Nostalgia do NOT count towards this title.
Speak to the cow kid near the entrance again for the title.
Frequently-missed chests can be found...
-> Within the right side of Tarqaron, where you find the
Fell Arms Uroboros and Susanoh. Requires the Sorcerer's
Ring Level 4, as do chests in the ensuing areas.
-> Within the icebergs at the Blade Drifts of Zophier. Use
the Sorcerer's Ring to push the icebergs and knock the
chests onto land.
-> Behind the bush near the Giganto monster in the
Quoi Woods. You can also find Karol's Glasya Labolas
there.
-> Behind certain bushes in Keiv Moc. You can find Raven's
Nebilim this way.
-> Behind rock formations and bushes in Relewiese Hollow.
Estelle's Mercurius is found this way.
-> Behind the cracked walls in the Shrine of Baction. Exits
are marked on the map so it should be fairly simple to
find them.
-> There is a new chest in the PS3 version behind where you
fight Zagi. Use the Sorcerer's Ring to break the blocks
and continue through to find a chest containing a sword
for Flynn called the Berserker Heart.
-> Items within drawers and other things in towns also count
towards the percentage. Make sure to check all around
each town.
Name : Berserker
Costume? : No
Obtained : Fight 255 battles on Hard difficulty or higher.
Name : Item Hater
Costume? : No
Obtained : Don't use any items in-battle until shortly after completing
Part 1 (defeat Barbos) and viewing the ensuing skit "Items? Who
Needs Items?" It's important that you don't use items until you
have viewed the skit and have gotten the title. For me, the skit
popped up on my way to Capua Torim from Heliord after defeating
Barbos, so don't worry if you don't get it immediately. Using
Holy Bottles or Gels in the field does not disqualify you from
the title or the achievement/trophy.
-> Alternatively, you can just unlock the skit via the
Grade Shop and view it in the Skit Viewer at Nam Cobanda.
Name : Aloha Boy
Costume? : Yes - Drawn back hair with a yellow vest and purple shorts.
Obtained : Obtained as part of the Swimsuit subquest.
-> Go to the destroyed Yormgen and speak with the butler
again. You'll get the title for Yuri and other swimsuit
titles for Karol, Raven, Flynn and Repede.
-> The subquest continues, so talk to the butler again if
you want the swimsuits for Estelle, Rita, Judith and
Patty.
-> Talk to Giovanni in Halure if you've seen the event for
completing 50% of the Collector's Book. The event for 50%
of the Collector's Book is is missable, so if you've
missed it, you no longer can get the titles for the
female party members. He'll give you the Super Aer Board
for your troubles.
-> Talk to the butler in Yormgen again to get the rest of
the titles.
4.7.1: THE INFINITE COMBO [ADV01]
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The infinite combo is actually a very simple thing to accomplish. Back in the
360 version, Yuri (and Rita) could combo bosses into oblivion once they stopped
counterattacking early on in the combo. While its utility has been nerfed a tad
in later versions what with humanoid enemies escaping combos more easily, it's
still very effective once the Tension skills kick in.
SKILLS YOU WILL NEED
High Tension
Hyper Tension
Ultimate Tension
*Perfect Tension
Dispersion
Great Deluge
**Chain
**Hell Fire
* : Not necessarily needed, but part of the Tension set and is nice to have.
** : Great Deluge and Dispersion are preferred, but Hell Fire and Chain can get
the job done.
SKILLS THAT ASSIST GREATLY
Super Chain 4
Super Chain 5
Super Chain
Super Chain 2
Super Chain 3
Ability Plus
High Ability Plus
Hyper Ability Plus
THE PROCESS
Basically, the aim of the game is to attain a 28-hit combo, which will
trigger High Combo Tension, sending Yuri into Over Limit. At that point, you
just need to get to a 50-hit combo before Level 1 Over Limit runs out, which
will trigger Hyper Combo Tension, sending Yuri into Level 2 Over Limit.
Getting a 72-hit combo and a 96-hit combo will send Yuri into Level 3 and
Level 4 Over Limit respectively.
Once you're near the end of the maximum amount of Over Limit you can attain
from a combo, activate Divine Wolf - Flood or Divine Wolf - Blaze level 3 to
pop the enemy into the air, whilst Over Limit ends for Yuri. At that point,
use Yuri's Free-Run attack to pick the enemy off the ground, repeating the
process all over again.
1: Attain a combo of 28 hits to enter Over Limit Level 1.
2: Spam high hit count artes until you enter Over Limit Level 2.
3: Spam even more high hit count artes until you enter Over Limit Level 3.
-> Optionally, you can do the same until you hit Over Limit Level 4.
4: Once your Over Limit period in level 3 or 4 Over Limit is nearly over,
activate Divine Wolf - Flood or Divine Wolf - Blaze.
5: After the arte finishes, use a Free-Run attack to pick the enemy up.
6: Get another 28-hit combo. Repeat ad naseum.
HOW DO I GET THAT 28 HIT COMBO?
-> Ability Chain, Super Chain and Ability Plus skills will help you chain
artes together to get the combo.
-> Brutal Fang, after enough uses, can be enough alone to get the required
amount of hits. This is a little tough to do, however, and should be
switched out for the aforementioned Ability Chain-esque skills.
-> Expending a bar of Over Limit can allow you to spam artes and enter
Over Limit Level 1 again, despite already being in Over Limit Level 1.
Yuri's Over Limit period for the appropriate level will simply extend
itself.
WHAT ARTES SHOULD I USE?
The following have high hit counts and are relatively quick:
-> Shining Fang
-> Dragon Swarm
-> Shining Dragon Swarm
-> Brutal Fang
-> Shining Fang Drop
-> AT OVERLIMIT LEVEL 2 AND ABOVE, Frigid Blast
OVER LIMIT LEVEL 2 AND YOU
-> All attacks will automatically pick enemies up, meaning artes that knock
enemies down can be used freely without messing your combo up. Frigid
Blast is so good at this level since it's so powerful and quick.
-> Aerial combos become more possible since you can chain Dragon Buster
after artes like Wailing Havoc and Severing Fang.
OTHER TIPS
-> Try to pin the enemy against the edges of the fighting area. Yuri's
artes can sometimes push away enemies enough to reset the combo counter
forcing you to restart.
-> At Over Limit Level 2, knockdown artes like Lone Wolf Storm can help
subdue more wily enemies like Zagi.
Yuri has a set of skills, mentioned just above this paragraph, which have
some pretty neat effects like filling the Over Limit gauge or restoring TP,
but most importantly they multiply the damage of the next hit you deal after
performing the combo indicated in their descriptions. For example, doing a
normal 3-hit combo followed by a base arte then an arcane arte will trigger
Combination, which will multiply the damage dealt by the first hit you deal
upon performing the arcane arte. If you're comboing an enemy normally, this
means that the first hit of the arcane arte will deal 2.5x damage.
Combination 2 will multiply the damage by 4x and Combination 3 will multiply
the damage by 10x.
The requirements for each arte are as follows:
COMBINATION
3-hit normal -> base arte -> arcane arte
COMBINATION 2
3-hit normal -> base arte -> altered arte -> arcane arte
COMBINATION 3
3-hit normal -> base arte -> altered arte -> arcane arte -> mystic arte
NOTE THAT YOU DO NOT HAVE TO ACTUALLY HIT THE ENEMY FOR THESE SKILLS TO
TRIGGER.
THE CONVENTIONAL APPLICATION
The most basic and most useful method of taking advantage of these skills
is basically to repeat the requirements of Combination over and over again,
with a strong, single-hit arcane arte to finish off the combo. The arcane
arte used will enjoy a 2.5x damage multiplier, boosting your damage
significantly.
The arte most useful for this sort of thing is Concealed Wave, which
is a single-hit arcane arte that happens to deal a ton of damage if used
in conjunction with the Combination skill. Speed runs use this technique to
mow down enemies, and it works quite well. Using Combination 2 will allow
you to multiply damage by 4x.
HEAVENLY BLADEWING AND COMBINATION SKILLS
Taken to its most logical extreme, Combination skills can allow Yuri to
transcend these pallid, mortal bounds and become truly and utterly broken.
This technique can and will destroy every single boss in the game--save for
the Spiral Draco--in a single hit, GUARANTEED. Here's what you do:
1: Set control to Manual Mode.
2: Enter Over Limit Level 4.
3: Trigger Combination without hitting the enemy.
4: Trigger Combination 2 in the same combo, again without hitting the enemy.
5: Trigger Combination 3 using Heavenly Bladewing without hitting the enemy.
Make sure to use Brutal Fang, which does not require Yuri to hit the
enemy in order to trigger Mystic Artes, to activate the Mystic Arte.
6: Watch in fear as Yuri deals 5,000,000+ damage to the first thing he hits.
I'm not joking. Millions of damage in a couple of seconds. Only the Spiral
Draco can actually survive this ridiculous technique because of its multiple
parts and whatnot. Bosses on Unknown will crumble before Yuri without even
so much as a fight.
I've personally dealt as much as 9,000,000+ damage, a number which you can
only get higher if Yuri's physical and magical attack rises. Since he can't
use his Fell Arm for Heavenly Bladewing, you're less likely to have hit the
stat cap.
WHY DOES IT WORK?
Combination skills multiply the next damage you deal by a certain number.
Combination will multiply it by 2.5, Combination 2 will multiply it by 4,
and Combination 3 will multiply it by 10. These will ALSO multiply upon
each other, meaning that if you trigger all three skills, the next hit you
will deal will be multiplied by 100. Naturally, since you can only activate
Combination 3 by triggering a Mystic Arte, you can either use Savage Wolf
Fury or Heavenly Bladewing. Heavenly Bladewing divides its total damage
over two hits, rather than Savage Wolf Fury's multiple, so it's naturally
the superior choice.
And get this, since Over Limit Level 4 makes you invincible, you have all
the opportunities in the world to trigger all three Combination skills. It's
quite ridiculous, but hey, Yuri has always been busted.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
4.7.3: THE SAVAGE WOLF FURY EXPLOIT [ADV03]
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This exploit isn't anything that requires a huge amount of set up or anything,
just the appropriate skills and a few enemies bunched together.
NEEDED SKILLS
Special
*Hit Plus
High Tension
Hyper Tension
Ultimate Tension
**Perfect Tension
* : Not totally needed, but makes things much easier.
** : Also not needed, but a Level 4 Savage Wolf Fury is more powerful than a
Level 3 Savage Wolf Fury.
THE PROCESS
Essentially, just enter level 3 or 4 Over Limit, group a bunch of enemies
together, and trigger the Mystic Arte, the close multiple enemies are
together, the better.
Yuri will perform the Mystic Arte and if you've herded the enemies together
well enough, Yuri will hit enemies other than the one you've targeted and
enter Over Limit 3 or 4, at which point you can just use Brutal Fang and
trigger Savage Wolf Fury over and over again (you must be in Manual Mode for
Brutal Fang to work immediately without touching enemies, though).
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
4.7.4: PARTY SYNERGY [ADV04]
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There are certain party members that Yuri works better with. I will go over them
all. The order in which I have arranged the party members is not absolute at
all, and is merely there as a soft suggestion.
FLYNN
Flynn is easily one of the best party members to put alongside Yuri. His
Rival Surge and Rival Surge 2 skills specifically require Yuri in order to
trigger (which is beneficial, to say the least). His dual Mystic Arte,
Twin Wave, also requires Yuri to be in the party. He's a great team player
with skills like Devotion, which allows Flynn to receive half the damage
other party members nearby would otherwise take themselves. He boasts a
good number of healing spells as well. Overall, a great teammate for Yuri.
RITA
Rita is a very popular party member for good reason. She stays out of Yuri's
way and pelts enemies with powerful magic spells, all of which give Yuri
many opportunities to go to work. Rita pretty much has a place in any party,
and there's only one enemy in the game that has magic defenses high enough
to make her a liability.
ESTELLE
Estelle is another party member that can sort of fit into any given party
lineup, as she has powerful healing artes such as Nightingale and great
magic artes such as Holy Rain. Her stat-boosting artes can also help a great
deal in-battle. A lot of her strike artes can knock enemies down, however,
which can be a bit annoying, but it's nothing that cannot be fixed with
appropriate strategies.
RAVEN
Raven, like Rita, is very much prone to staying out of Yuri's way and
supporting with wind-type magic artes like Havoc Gale and Arrivederci.
His Love Shot arte is actually a very good healing arte if spammed. It
can actually be worth it in tough battles to map his Love Shot to one of
your shortcuts, so you can spam it whenever necessary. A lot of his artes
can knock enemies down, but you can prevent him from using those artes by
turning them off in the artes menu.
PATTY
She's a wild card. Her gimmick, essentially, is that all of her artes have
random effects that can vary wildly. She can be a great boon, but she can</pre><pre id="faqspan-3">
be just as easily a great detriment. If you're lucky, she can easily be the
best party member to have on your team by consistently sending you into
Level 4 Over Limit or healing you by great amounts. If you're unlucky, she
can send the enemy into Over Limit or change your element into something
the boss you're facing resists. You can make her results more consistent
with the Safe Bet skill, so if you don't want to take chances with her,
you can use that.
REPEDE
Repede is great melee support for Yuri in battle, as he attacks fast in
hits relatively hard. He can knock away and knock down enemies making things
annoying, but he's still a pretty effective supporter. His item skills allow
him to make the most of your items, which can be nice when you're in a pinch
and your other healers can't get their artes off fast enough... or if they
are gone from the party entirely, post-Myorzo, for example.
KAROL
Karol is strong and has surprisingly good healing artes with his -Smash
artes, but most of his artes knock enemies down, making things a little
annoying. There is a lot of debate on the forums as to whether or not he
surpasses Estelle as a healer and while I personally prefer Estelle (as
Karol is kinda slow getting around the field, especially when you're
fighting a mobile enemy), he's still pretty effective. If you're okay with
a lot of knockdown artes, Karol is still a pretty good member to have on
your team.
JUDITH
Judith, unfortunately, is not much of a team player. She excels when she
can perform combos in the air, which draws enemies away from Yuri. And
if she's on the ground, most of her techniques will knock enemies down,
which makes combos a bit tricky. She's great to control, but not so great
as a computer-controlled team member.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
4.7.5: ARTE USAGE AND YOU [ADV05]
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This isn't so much an advanced strategy than it is a universal game mechanic
that must be addressed: the more you use your artes, the more powerful they
become. I'm not quite sure what the exact formula is behind it, or if artes
are simply boosted in strength once they hit a certain number, but it's there.
Once you hit 9,999 uses with any arte, that arte's power is tripled, meaning
you'll deal quite a bit more damage, as you can imagine. It's a huge grind but
if you're thinking you want to take on Unknown Mode in a Yuri Solo run, go nuts,
but a little arte usage grinding is very helpful in the long run.
I alluded to this in the controls section, but there's a mechanic in Tales of
Vesperia, across all editions, that lets you cancel the recovery frames of many
attacks, artes, etc with careful, precise use of free running. This technique
will allow you to recover more quickly from actions that would otherwise leave
you defenseless. Here's a quick run down on how you accomplish this:
-> You must be in Manual mode.
-> When attacking, using an arte, casting, etc, HOLD the Free Run Button and
then hold the Guard button quickly after pressing the Free Run button.
-> Move toward the enemy.
-> This should all be done in one fluid motion.
-> You should have slid toward the enemy slightly. This signifies that you have
correctly executed the technique.
The applications for this technique are endless - you can attack more quickly,
guard faster, chain artes together that you otherwise couldn't without the use
of skills like Ability Plus, Super Chain, etc. or Over Limit, expanding your
combo potential dramatically. This skill isn't exclusive to Yuri, either - every
character benefits from using this, though Yuri does get the most mileage out
of it.
If you're having trouble using this technique, consult some video guides on
YouTube, as a visual representation can explain this better than text can.
4.8: QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS [FAQ08]
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Q: The combo counter resets on some bosses... how do I stop this so I can go
into overlimit?
A: Despite what the combo counter says, as long as Yuri hits the enemy rapidly
enough, the game will still consider the hits he's dealing as part of a
combo, contributing to his tension counter.
Q: Do titles have any effect in this game?
A: Titles don't have any effect, save for the costumes.
Q: Where do I get the Limit Octet? (Allows 8 overlimits)
A: You have to complete the Merciless Rank of Team Battle at Nordopolica.
Q: What recipes does Yuri like?
A: Yuri has a huge sweet tooth, so he likes the Sorbet, Pudding, Cake, Crepe,
and Fruit Parfait recipes. He also enjoys Mabo Curry and the Fisherman's
Hot Pot dish.
Q: What recipes is Yuri good at?
A: He's good at making the Sandwich, Sorbet, Pudding, Cake, Crepe and Fruit
Parfait recipes.
Q: What are his recipe evolutions?
A: His recipe evolutions are...
-> Rice Ball --> Beef Bowl
-> Pork Miso Soup --> Udon Noodles Hot Pot
-> Sorbet --> Pudding
-> Pudding --> Cake
Q: This guy I saw on YouTube does so much damage in his combos without a Fell
Arm, even though his strength isn't that high! And even at 9999 strength,
I can't even do that much damage!
A: I mention it above, but artes have their power tripled upon reaching 9999
uses. It's an insane requirement with an insane reward, but it's there if
you're feeling up to it!
