Welcome to Space Quest 3 for the PC, the third adventure game in the series
released by Sierra in 1989.
The walkthrough for this game is complete and includes a point list. By
following the walkthrough you will also get all points in the game. If you spot
any errors or have suggestions please feel free to e-mail me about it. Enjoy!
Control your character with the arrow keys, Home, End, Page Up/Down or use
the Numpad keys.
F1 = Help
F2 = Sound On/Off
F3 = ReType
F5 = Save
F7 = Load
F9 = Restart
CTRL+Q = Quit
The game doesn't care much for grammar and instead of "LOOK AT THE POD" you
can simply type "LOOK POD". This guide uses working inputs but you can replace
them with different words the game understands (e.g. 'get' instead of 'take').
If the game doesn't understand something it will tell you. Only at a few
points during the game it is picky about the words you chose for an action.
All commands in the guide are in CAPS. You might notice sometimes the guide
also lacks grammar at times, this is intentional because the commands are also
lacking them and it is easier to come across if ignored.
The number in the ()s is the amount of points you get during the game and the
amount you should have in total if you've been following the walkthrough. They
are listed again in the point list for a quick overview.
After the intro, go south and east. Stand where the conveyor belt goes up so
you get on it (5, 5). When you are on top, STAND and JUMP before you get
mashed at the end of it (5, 10). Walk left until you see the grabber machine.
GET IN MACHINE and go around the bend and stop in the middle of the next
screen just behind the small obstacle. PUSH BUTTON to release the grabber and
you should take the object that was lying around in the screen below (15, 25).
Drive right and stop just after you have gone around the bend. PUSH BUTTON to
drop the object into a ship below (15, 40). Ride where you go the grabber and
stop at the middle chute. GET OUT and slide down the chute before the nearby
robot shoots you (5, 45). TAKE REACTOR on the left wall where the
red light wire is coming out from (15, 60) and then CLIMB the ladder on the
right. Go up and right twice until you get beaten up by the giant rat (-15,
45) which is unavoidable the first time. Go back where you climbed the ladder
and CLIMB LADDER down. TAKE REACTOR as before (15, 60). CLIMB the ladder back
up and TAKE LADDER afterwards (15, 75). Go up and east twice to the area where
you were beaten up. TAKE WIRE at the left side (5, 80). Go right and CLIMB the
head of the large robot (5, 85). PLACE LADDER at the lower side of the ship
(5, 90) and CLIMB LADDER. OPEN DOOR to get inside (10, 100). PLACE REACTOR (5,
105) and PLACE WIRE (5, 110). SIT and SEARCH CHAIR for some buckazoids (10,
120). LOOK MONITOR and use the commands to start the ship. '7', '1', '8', 'F',
Space bar to shoot a hole in the ship (25, 145) and 2 for the navigation
screen. Scan the system until you find planet Phleebhut. Select it with '2'
and drive off with 5. After you arrive at Phleebhut land with '3'.
___Phleebhut___
---------
STAND and EXIT the ship. Go up, right, up and right once more to enter the
World O' Wonders store. SELL GEM (8, 153)) but bargain until he offers 425
buckazoids. He'll show you some items so BUY ORAT (5, 158), BUY HAT (5, 163)
and BUY UNDERWEAR (5, 168). LEAVE and you'll be confronted by Arnoid. He'll
follow you shortly so go left, south, left, south and west at the bottom part
of the screen. If the Arnoid is following you should be walking past the pods
without getting sucked up and the Arnoid will be instead (45, 213). Get close
to his remaining items and USE ORAT to get the belt (35, 248). Go east and
enter the ship. SIT and LOOK MONITOR. '1', '3' and LOOK MONITOR again. '2'
for the navigation screen and find Monolith Burger. '2' to set course and '5'
to fly off.
___Monolith Burger___
---------------
Walk left and up to the clerk at the counter. LOOK MENU and choose '7', then
'Q' and PAY (10, 258). Walk right and SIT at the empty seat. EAT (10, 268,
STAND and go back left. Talk up to the Arcade Machine and PLAY GAME. INSERT
COIN each time you want to play Astro Chicken.
ASTRO CHICKEN
#############
Welcome to your worst nightmare. This game is pretty horrible and should be
banned. Your simply need to play a dozen times or so to get the encoded
message to appear. If you want all the points, each Chicken you land before
the message gives you 5 points for a maximum of (50, 318). Any chicken landed
afterwards will not yield any extra points. Wait for the instructions to
appear onscreen and try the game. It's pretty hard to control. Maybe it's my
keyboard but it's sheer impossible to rescue any chicken that starts out on
the edge of the screen. Maybe it is easier to play with a joystick. Anyway
here are some tips that might help. Flap the wings just before you land rough
so you land little softer. When the chicken bounces to the right or left after
it landed hard, steer it the other way and then use the flap command just a
little. I have found that using up and a direction at the same time often
results in the chicken flying up in the air again. Basically you don't want
that to happen so a slight tap after it has faced the other way and then feed
it a little. Too much will make it fly off too, but too little might not make
it back to the pad all the way. Also before I forget, reduce the game speed
for this part slightly or you'll stand little chance. Good luck, you're gonna
need it.
After you have played plenty of games you'll see an encoded message. DECODE
MESSAGE (70, 388) and you can see the code. If you want to try and read it
take your time but it just tells you about the two guys you need to rescue.
F6 to leave the game, go back to your ship, ENTER SHIP, LOOK MONITOR and '1'
to take off. '2' for the navigation screen and scan for Ortega. '2' to set
course and '5' to fly off. When are you arrive, land with '3'.
___Ortega___
------
STAND up and WEAR UNDERWEAR (10, 398). EXIT and go down, left and down.
Wait behind the large rock until the 2 guys leave. Then USE TELESCOPE (10,
408) and TAKE DETONATOR (4, 418) at the rock in the middle. TAKE POLE (10,
428). Go left twice and up the slope. At the right side of the dark walls you
can pass to go into the building. Go down the stairs and right. CLIMB the
ladder all the way up and stand near the hole. DROP DETONATOR (20, 448) and
CLIMB back down. You need to get out of here before the planet explodes. Go
back to your ship via Left, down, down, left, left and up. USE POLE (20, 468)
to jump the gap and go left then up to your ship. Inside, SIT and LOOK MONITOR
as usual. '1' & '3' to take off. LOOK MONITOR and '2' for the navigation
screen. Scan for Pestulon and '2' set course. '5' to fly off and '3' to land
when you arrive.
___Pestulon___
--------
After you have arrived, STAND and LEAVE. Go south and WEAR BELT. PUSH BUTTON
to activate it and wait for the message to ask if you where you want to go to.
Select to enter the building and walk past the guards (25, 493). PUSH BUTTON
at the elevator and walk north on the round corridor. Enter the first door on
the left to get to janitor's closet. LOOK and TAKE COVERALLS (5, 498). Go back
outside and south. Enter the first door on the right. You need to USE
VAPORIZER on all the rubbish bins at the desks or they get suspicious and call
security if you just walk around doing nothing. By doing so, go left and TAKE
PHOTO at the wall. Go to the photocopier and COPY PHOTO (5, 503). HANG PHOTO
back where you got it from and go back right. Get to the upper part of the
office to get to the Boss' area. Go around the cubicle and onto the balcony.
Now walk back and TAKE CARD off his desk (5, 508). Return to the round
corridor and find the door with the card slot. INSERT CARD and quickly HOLD
COPY so the scanner gets fooled. The door will open so enter it (20, 528).
PUSH BUTTON to make a ramp appear. Walk up to the two guys and USE VAPORIZER
to free them (209, 737). Wait for the guards to arrive and take you to the
Robot Arena (-199, 538).
ROBOT BOXING
############
This is easier than Astro Chicken but unfair as Elmo has superior controls
over his robot. The best strategy is probably to just wait and don't move
around at all. Punch Elmo's robot when he gets close. Sometimes he'll block
but the majority of jabs hit him in the face. He should go down before you
or at least a close match, very much unlike trying to walk around and hitting
him.
After you defeat Elmo (100, 638) you'll be back in your ship. Wait for the
enemy ships to arrive and LOOK MONITOR. '6' for Attack Speed and '8' for
Defense. You'll need to switch the shield back and forth. It's quite
predictable and you'll get used it soon. When the fighter is in front of you
just try to get him into a target look by following with your aim but don't
bother trying to shoot. Once you have the target lock on you can safely shoot
down the ship with a single shot. After 3 ships or so the assault is denied
(100, 738). 'O' to quit the screen and F6 to leave the computer screen. Watch
the ending and the credits. Enjoy!

Space Quest 3 (SQ3) follows the story of what happened at the end of SQ2. Your
ship is taken in as scrap metal by a junk freighter and you need to find your
way out. This time you get to explore several locations instead of the few in
the first two games. The engine is advanced and one can type while the game is
paused in the background. This avoids hasty typing/situations from the
previous game we know too well.
Gameplay: 4/10
7/10 for SQ3 and 1/10 for Astro Chicken. The latter is the worst arcade game
ever and should be avoided like the plague. Too bad we must play it for the
story of SQ3 but it gets 1 point for that we only need to finish 10 chicken
with plenty of game overs. For the rest of the game, it has too many arcade
sequences unfortunately. Solving puzzles is interesting but figuring out how
to fly with the ship is not.
Graphics: 8/10
Cute. I like this engine just like Leisure Suit Larry 2 used. The locations
are very detailed and the characters have nice animations. A more detailed
Wilco would have been nice I guess. For 1989 this was very good and I have
seen worse game, including from Sierra) that followed afterwards and didn't
reach this level.
Sound: 9/10
Awesome stuff. Even though it sound a little daft on the new music boards the
tunes are extremely well done and catchy even after all these years. Obviously
the Astro Chicken one not, but that won't bring down the rating for this part.
From the start I noticed this game has good music, and it continued to have
throughout the game. Sound effects are scarce but they add a nice touch.
The creepy music is excellent and combined with some nice animation (such as
the rats in their domain) makes this game seem more alive than ever.
Overall: 7/10
Good game, hard to solve puzzles at times and a little bit to arcardy at times
especially when you need to play Astro Chicken. I could have done without
that, shooting or space battles. In fact I'd like to have the pleasure of
firing the person who invented this AC game. It is so bad, so awful, so
painfully dreadful that I can understand many people stopping with SQ3 at this
point in the game. This game is perhaps the kind of action adventure that
would make for a new Space Quest sequel and is not classic like the others
at all. However this is surely great for SQ fans and I prefer the more safe
adventure where you don't die all over the place, even for innocently walking
through the dessert and getting killed by scorpions. No thanks.
Sierra and especially the original creators for this classic game.
