2.1 1ST IMPRESSION (Preview)
Separate Blue. Survive, 2003.01.31.
[Ramble ON]
Though I previously played the 18-kin Ecchi game Hooligan by FrontWing
(2001.11.22), which apparently has the same chara designer as Separate Blue,
I got this 18-kin Ecchi game (Separate Blue) for a selective audio (vocal)
reason...
Anyway.
The game is on two CDs. It needs both CDs to install.
*SPOILER ALERT*
Except the OP anime as a MPG file (32.7 MB) on CD 1, and the same
README.TXT file on both CDs, the CDs don't seem to have any omake stuph.
The OP anime is 02:06 minutes long, and has an OP song. (The whistling
in the first 30 seconds of the OP song annoys me. IMO, the OP song sounds
better without the OP anime.)
The OP anime names and previews the five heroines:
- ISIBASI Tsubame (short purple hair)
- MARUISHI Otona (short red hair, glasses)
- TSUNODA Hiwako (long black hair, white hair band)
- SHUZENJI Chihaya (short grey hair)
- TSURUDO Misui (long dark green hair)
(Don't know why Tsubame's family name is in Kunrei shiki hiragana.)
The README.TXT introduces the few keyboard hot keys.
The player can't choose the install size. After installation, the game
squats on 852 MB.
Seems the player doesn't need to keep either CD in the CD-ROM drive to
run the game.
In the game, after the OP anime, the top edge of the title screen has
four options: System, Auto Mode, Skip Read Messages, Version.
System has four options: Return To Title Screen, Full Screen, Settings,
and Exit.
Settings has four tabs: Text Settings 1, Text Settings 2, Sound
Settings, System Settings.
In Sound Settings, the player can turn on/off individual chara's
voices.
In the title screen, the main menu has three options displayed in
English: Start, Continue, and Exit.
In Continue, the game has 20 pages of save game slots. Each page has
five slots.
In Start, the player can change the protagonist's family and personal
names. His default name is MITSUBISHI Juuji.
(I changed it to WAYA Yoshitaka, of Hikago (Hikaru no Go) fame, to
remind myself I p_ssed off his CV Takagi Reiko and her fans a couple years
ago. Else, in Ecchi games, I sometimes use KASUGA Kyousuke, of Kimaore
(Kimagure Orange Road) fame.
In non-Ecchi games, I sometimes use SHINJOU Hayato, of Sotsugyou
Crossworld fame.)
Each save game slot has a real date/time, game date/time, memo (user
comment), and screen cap (thumbnail CG).
The default memo is the text currently in the message frame.
I got this game because, according to the gal game seiyuu database Game
Plaza -Haruka- Seiyuusan Shutsuen List at
http://iweb2.sakuranet.or.jp/~haruno-c/gameplaza/va_memo/personal_db.cgi?action=disp_person&value=19
in Separate Blue, the heroine Tsunoda Hiwako's CV Ishibashi Tomoko is
reportedly Takahashi Chiaki's alias. Though I'm not absolutely certain about
the reliability of the data in this database, some of its data agree with
insiders' information I'd read elsewhere, such as the claim that the former
SG Girl (Sentimental Graffiti Girl) Suzuki Mariko is in the Eroge- titled
Sore ha maichiru sakura no you ni (Sorechiru) for Windows. Takahashi Chiaki
belongs to Arts Vision, and belonged to Aoni Pro (Aoni Production).

http://www.tcp.com/doi/seiyuu/takahashi-chiaki.html
http://www24.big.or.jp/~telegama/chiaki.html
I like Takahashi Chiaki because she voiced Matsuyama Chiaki, my
favourite heroine amongst the five heroines (or six, if we count Cowbell) in
Sotsugyou III -Wedding Bell-.

and the StrawBerry Club section in the ITmedia HP at

this game.
Also^2,
http://www.alpha-net.ne.jp/users2/gtbase/98/kako/separate_brue.htm
has a bicyclist's technical comment about the bicycles in the game.
(In real life, I don't ride a bicycle or motorcycle. Years ago, watched
the OVA series Golden Boy though.)
Finally, if anyone's looking for a save data file of this game, try:
http://sagaoz.arrd.net/savedata/sa/index.htm
(Which reminds me: where the phuck in my HD did I save that save data
file?)
FYI, in Ecchi games, I dislike anal/kanchou/scatolo,
android/cyborg, bandage, bestiality/kemono (maybe except
Kitsunemimi and Nekomimi), bondage/chain/collar, boys
love/gay/homo/yaoi/801, bukkake/orgy, Burikko, byoujaku,
choukyou/slave, chuuko/hitoduma (wife)/miboujin (widow),
dark/grotesque, futanari/kaizou, gakuenmono, gigolo, girls
love/les/yuri, kichiku/SM, kinshin/mother/nikushin, kyonyuu,
Lolicom/petit/puny/slender, Mah Jong, maid, ninshin
(pregnant), nun, nurse, okama (maybe except the Hokuto no
Ken type), school mizugi, Shouta, slime, tentacles, and
Undead/zombies.
(I know. Picky, picky.)

Later (Thursday, 2004.08.12):
Instead of this game, I could've installed Itsuka, dokoka de -Ano
amaoto no kioku- (BeF, 2002.05.24) or Talk to Talk (Clear, 2002.02.XX), but
I couldn't seem to find any kouryaku of the former in the Web, and the chara
designs of the latter IMO aren't very attractive.
I was trying the trial version (playable demo) of Ikusa Otome Valkyrie
-Anata ni subete wo sasagemasu- (Lune, 2004.07.30), but it seemed to hate my
Windows 2000 Pro and hanged when I tried to start a new game and it asked
for the protagonist's name. (-_-#)
(BTW, today (12 August) is one of my favourite Aoni Pro CV, Shimakata
Junko's birthday.)
2.2 2ND IMPRESSION (Review)
Later (Thursday, 2004.08.12):
Unlike other Eroge-, while the player's playing Separate Blue, it
doesn't seem to have a CG review mode, where the player can review the
full-screen event CG that the game has displayed.
Maybe the game unlocks such a CG review mode after the player has
cleared the game at least once.
Later (Saturday, 2004.08.14):
Durng the game, the player sometimes, such as on June 17 the fourth
game day, gets a flight sim-like aerial view (2D illust) of Mihatoya City,
and can choose to go to one of several spots, such as: Jitaku (home),
Koikaru Ko (Koikaru Lake), Mihatoya Gakuen (school), Renshuu KO-SU (Renshuu
Course, Exercise Course), and Shoutengai (shopping street).
Beside each name label of a spot might be an icon that shows a
heroine's head, including a heroine whom the protagonist hasn't met. For
example, on June 17, at Koikaru Ko is Chihaya's icon.

4. SOLUTION (The Adventure Begins)
In 1st Play, I aim for Hiwako's ending.
In 2nd Play, if any, I'll probably aim for Misui's ending.
(To quote the heroine in the movie Top Gun (the civilian
instructor nicknamed Charlie at NAS Miramar (USN)), "I don't date
students.")
4.1 1ST PLAY (Hiwako)
JUNE 14, SATURDAY
The game begins on June 14, Saturday, in the coffee restaurant Amica
Cips (Amika Chippusu in katakana, but not Amica "Chips").
Here, the protagonist wakes up and introduces himself as a transfer
student who moved from Toukyou to his uncle's home in this inaka town
Mihatoya Shi (Mihatoya City) about three months ago, in early March.
(AFAIK, the game will end in late July.)
He also meets and introduces the Master of Amica Cips, KURAI Jouji, and
the protagonist's female younger cousin, TSURUDO Furan (short brown hair,
green frog suit).
(For a change, the protagonist is a KIB (Kogal slang: Kanojo
Inai Boy) who doesn't have a sister. He isn't voiced. The other
chara, female and male, are.)
The protagonist exits Amica Cips, goes (to his uncle's) home, and
introduces his female older cousin (moe moe), TSURUDO Misui, who last year
graduated from the education faculty of an university in this prefecture,
and now teaches Japanese history at his school, Mihatoya Gakuen.
(Again, the game designers call the school a "gakuen", instead of
defining whether it's a middle school or high school, thus avoid defining
the main chara's exact age.)
His uncle and aunt are currently out of Japan, and have gone to visit
his parents.
He retrieves his bike and takes a hike to Koikaru Ko (Koikaru Lake).
Later, on a road that slopes upwards, he briefly meets (well, he almost
gets run over by) a female fellow bicyclist and classmate, ISHIBASHI
Tsubame.
(The game displays one Tsubame panchira CG, if anyone's counting the
time between the beginning of the game and the first Ecchi CG.)
Later, at night, Misui comes to his room (formerly his uncle's storage
shack) and summons him to dinner. She wears glasses at home (moe moe).
(The game displays one event CG, with Misui, Furan, and him eating
dinner. BTW, just ignore my siscom.)
1-1 "Oisii!" [Delicious.]
1-2 "Imaiti." [Fair.]
1-3 "Hutuu ssu." [Common or ordinary.]
In 1st Play, I aimed for Hiwako, and chose 1-3.
JUNE 15, SUNDAY
Today, no multiple choice node.
The protagonist challenges (climbs) that Heart Attack Slope.
Later, about sunset, he meets and chats with Tsubame there. They speed
downhill to the lake. She asks him to join the bicycle club at their school,
because they need at least four members to compete in the annual bicycle
race around the lake, and they currently has just three members. He pledges
to answer her tomorrow.
(I like genki-type heroines, but her IMO squeaky voice is beginning to
get on my nerves. Don't know who's her CV though. On second thought, the
protagonist forgot to ask for Tsubame's cell phone number, if any.)
JUNE 16, MONDAY
Furan wakes up the protagonist at 06:20, 40 minutes earlier than
normal. (_ _;) Zzz
Misui offers to drive him to school, but he declines and takes the bus.
At the bus stop, he meets a classmate, SHIMANO Satoru. (Not to be confused
with Shamino the Ranger in the Ultima CRPG series.)
En route to their school, Tsubame, riding her bike, sees him in the bus
and hails him.
In his classroom, he glances at another transfer student who moved from
Toukyou City to this inaka town, TSUNODA Hiwako, who wears the uniform of
her old school, instead of the sailor fuku of this school, though she came
here last year.
She politely asks him to show her his mathematics homework, he does,
she coolly comments his homework is correct and thanks him, and he asks her
why does she ask him to show her his homework.
2-1 Semete riyuu kurai ie. [At least (she) can say the
reason.]
2-2 Maa, dou demo ii ka. [Well, whatever is OK.]
2-1 leads to node 3.
In 1st Play, I aimed for Hiwako, and chose 2-1.
JUKUNO Remon, AKA Lemon chan, the old f_rt who's in charge of the
protagonist's class and teaches mathematics, appears.
3-1 Toriaezu, GURAUNDO [Ground] no hou ni itte miru
ka. [Try the Ground.]
3-2 Misui san ni kiite miyou. [Try Misui.]
In 1st Play, I aimed for Hiwako, and chose 3-1.
The protagonist asks a soccer club member for directions, finds the
bicycle club house, enters it while Tsubame's changing clothes (no CG), and
gets knocked out by a thrown trophy.
When he recovers, he meets the members of the bicycle club: Tsubame,
MARUISHI Otona, and MIYATA Jirou (a brute with red, SFII Guile-like hair).
And the consultant of the bicycle club: Misui... Tsurudo sensei.
JUNE 17, TUESDAY
In the map, the spots are: Jitaku, Koikaru Ko (Chihaya), Mihatoya
Gakuen (Hiwako), Renshuu KO-SU (Tsubame), Shoutengai (Otona).
I chose Mihatoya Gakuen.
4-1 Kiku. [Hear it.]
4-2 Kikanai. [Don't hear it.]
I chose 4-1.
Beside a green frog suit, Furan has a dark brown and white panda suit.
JUNE 18, WEDNESDAY
In the map, the spots are: Jitaku, Koikaru Ko (Chihaya), Mihatoya
Gakuen (Hiwako), Renshuu KO-SU (Tsubame), Shoutengai (Otona).
I chose Mihatoya Gakuen.
Today, no multiple choice node.
(IMO, unlike in, for example, Canary (Kanaria), Green Green, and Imouto
de ikou! Plenty of pretty sisters; the Separate Blue chara's
comments/dialogue are awfully blunt/frank/honest, and aren't idiotically
funny.)
JUNE 19, THURSDAY
In the map, the spots are: Amica Cips, Jitaku, Mihatoya Gakuen (Otona),
Shoutengai.
I quickly clicked all spots: Chihaya (?) and Master are at Amica Cips,
Misui is at Jitaku, and Tsubame is at Shoutengai. I chose Jitaku.
Today, no multiple choice node.
JUNE 20, FRIDAY
Today, no map or multiple choice node.
At school, in a corridor, the protagonist bumps into Chihaya, AKA
Shinigami Rider. She was hospitalised for two months, and just came back two
or three days ago. He notes her left forearm is bandaged.
(WRT game heroines who're biker chicks, I'm already loyal to Arai
Kiyomi chan (CV Tsuru Hiromi sama) of Sotsugyou I -Graduation-.)
After school, he goes to Amica Cips, and again meets Chihaya, who's a
waitress at Amica Cips. (_ _;)
JUNE 21, SATURDAY
Today, no map.
5-1 Ryoukai. [Understood, madam.]
5-2 Kyakka. [Rejection, Your Honour.]
5-3 Abareru. [Get wild and tough.]
I chose 5-2.
This disappoints Misui (-_-;) and angers Furan. At night, Furan
threatens to bury his bicycle next time.
JUNE 22, SUNDAY
Today, no map.
6-1 Wakatta, asonde yaru. [Play.]
6-2 Iya dane. [Don't play.]
AFAIK, neither choice affects Hiwako. I chose 6-1, to see whether Misui
joins them. She doesn't.
Outside their home, the weather is excellent, and the protagonist and
Furan meet Satoru. The protagonist dumps Furan, goes to the slope, and meets
Tsubame.
(IMO, when they ride bicycles, they should always wear helmets. Well,
back when I was an Engineering undergrad, I did a project on bicycle
helmets, and WRT the shock absorption capacity of bicycle helmets, our
Canadian CSA standard was tougher than the USA standards, IIRC.)
JUNE 23, MONDAY
In the map, the spots are: Jitaku, Koikaru Ko (Chihaya), Mihatoya
Gakuen (Misui), Renshuu KO-SU (Otona), Shoutengai (Hiwako).
I chose Shoutengai.
The protagonist discovers Hiwako is unexpectedly cheery when she
speaks, through her keitai, with her friend back in Toukyou.
7-1 Igai na sugao wo. [Surprising plain face.]
7-2 Nani mo mitenai yo. [Don't see anything.]
I chose 7-1.
JUNE 24, TUESDAY
In the map, the spots are: Jitaku (Misui), Mihatoya Gakuen, Renshuu
KO-SU (Tsubame), Shoutengai (Hiwako).
I chose Shoutengai.
Today, no multiple choice node.
Hiwako wears a light yellow one-piece, sleeveless dress with a dark
yellow bow, and a red (Sakura Taisen Sakura- or Samurai Spirits
Nakoruru-like) ribbon, with a white sun umbrella.
She remembers he was also here yesterday. He buys all the reference
books she suggests.
JUNE 25, WEDNESDAY
In the map, the spots are: Jitaku (Misui), Mihatoya Gakuen, Renshuu
KO-SU (Tsubame), Shoutengai (Hiwako).
I chose Shoutengai.
Today, no multiple choice node.
JUNE 26, THURSDAY
In the map, the spots are: Amica Cips (Tsubame), Jitaku (Misui),
Mihatoya Gakuen (Chihaya), Renshuu KO-SU, Shoutengai (Otona).
I chose Renshuu KO-SU.
Today, no multiple choice node.
The protagonist meets Hiwako.
(After school, don't the chara have to do their homework?)
JUNE 27, FRIDAY
At school, Otona gets a new bicycle.
(Her blushing isn't tractor-beaming me at all.)
In the map, the spots are: Amica Cips (Tsubame), Jitaku, Koikaru Ko,
Shoutengai (Otona).
I chose Jitaku.
Today, no multiple choice node.
The protagonist meets Furan, then Hiwako.
