Ahh Football. Some call it Soccer, some haven't even heard of
it, but it is without doubt the world's most popular sport.
Never has a sport etched itself on the DNA of a man before.
As soon as you are old enough, the need to play Football
comes gushing out and you use anything ranging from rolled up
socks to the family cat to have a kick about with. Soon enough,
you are playing Football in the school playground at Junior School
and then it's at Secondary School where you really start to feed
the habit by organising mass matches at lunchtime.
However, for most, this is where the dream stops. Most of us
will go onto College and Work and never have time to play Football
anymore and limit our experiances to watching it on TV.

That's where Sensible Soccer 96-97 steps in, it's designed for
those of us who couldn't make it into Football so we can have a
taste of the action.

The concept is like this, you choose a club from one of 1400 and
your job is to take this club to glory in it's country and, if
you team is in Europe, you can also qualify for the various
cup competitions such as the UEFA Cup. To help you achive this
goal, you must have a strangle hold on the Club's finances and
make sure you dont get into debt, which could happen a lot.
With these finances you must buy players to improve your squad
there are over 23,000 of them, so you wont have to shop around
for long. Other than this, you also have an ambitious chairman
and, depending on your Finances and League position, he can sack
you anytime he wants. Because he is a very nasty man.
The match system is much the same as in earlier versions of
Sensible Soccer. You have a birds eye view of the pitch and
your players are small little men who always seem to have a look
of horror on their face. (maybe there is something in the sky we
dont know about, like a giant monster prehaps?) Playing the game
is very simple, your players can tackle, pass and shoot and thats
about it, it may sound rubbish compared to today's 3D games but it
is remarkably fun because it is so simple. You can control your
players with either the Keyboard or a Controller, but use your
Controller if you have one. Ill talk more about control methods
later. Tactics play a important part in the game so think on your
feet if you want to win all 144 competitions within the game.
Players also have stats, very much like in modern football
management games, will a Striker with good Tackling score many
goals? No. Will a Defender with great Shooting save many goals?
No again. Infact, players have 3 strong statistics which you must
look at before you even consider buying him. He may be worth 3
million, but does his stats reflect his position? This is another
aspect you must deal with in the game.
Last but not least is International management. If you do well
enough, your FA may decide to ask you to manage your National
Team. What that team is will be pre-determined before you
begin yuor career, but more about that later.
International Management is the same as Club management, except
that you can select anyone to be in your side (as long as they
are the same nationality as your Nation, duh) and instead of
valuations, you will have to judge your players by stars as well
as their abilities.

However, there are a few drawbacks to the game. The first and
worst is that players never age. Ronaldo will be playing for
ever which is stupid. Another is the fact that you can only play
20 seasons. While it does increase the fun and challenge, it can
be annoying when you have a good game running. Prehaps the last
drawback is the fact that if you watch your team's match's you
will only score if you have fantastic players on your side.
This means that if you choose Cailungo in San Marino, you'll
be never be able to score a goal if you watch the match which
means you'll either have to skip the game (which I always do
anyway) or control the untalentless idiots yourself.

About this FAQ, this is not intended to help you win the game
as there is'nt really any "ultimate" tactics or anything like
that. However, I can give you advice on tactics, the best players,
and which team to choose in the country you wish to play in.

While im here, if you have anything to add, suggest, comment
or hell, if you just want to chat (within reason :s) send an
e-mail and preferbly, lots of money to [email protected]
or add me to MSN at the same address to have a rant at me.

Enjoy the guide!

FRIENDLY/DIY GAME LENGTH: Change between 2, 5, 7 and 10 minuites
3 minuites is the default setting, but changing it to 10 means
maximum fun. Please note that you can't change the length of
a career game.

FIX PITCH TYPE: Choose between Seasonal, Random, Frozen, Muddy
Wet, Soft, Normal, Dry and hard.
Seasonal means that the month determines the state of the pitch.
For example, in January, expect a wet, frozen, soft or muddy
pitch, but in July, expect a Normal, Dry Hard pitch.
Random Chooses for you. The default setting is Seasonal.

AUTO REPLAYS: Choose between ON or OFF. After someone scores the
game will show you a replay of the goal so keep it on because
you can skip it anyway. Default Setting is OFF.

ALL PLAYER TEAMS EQUAL: Choose between ON or OFF. If switched on,
the human players in a game will e exactly the same, even if one
of you is Brazil and the other is Luxembourg. Default setting is
ON.

AUTO SAVE HIGHLIGHTS: Choose between ON or OFF. After a match is
finished, the game will automaticly save the match goals under
"highlights" where you can choose to save them. More about them
on section IX. Default setting is ON

MENU MUSIC: Choose between ON or OFF. Do you really want me to
explain this option? Default setting is ON

COMMENTARY: Choose between ON or OFF. The commentary by Jonathon
Pearce is goos to start with but you will soon tire off him
screaming "Referee!" Default setting is ON

CHAIRMAN SCENES: Choose between ON or OFF. Another nice touch,
but you'll soon get rid of him popping up to threaten you with
your job. I suggest switching him off but if you'r a newbie you
may as well keep him on. Default setting is ON

QUIT TO DOS: Exit the game.

This bit of the game lets you pair off any two teams in the world
gainst each other in a one off match. Probably better used to
practice your skills or recreate a real life match.

Select "Friendly" from the main menu and select the pitch type
you would like and the number of subsitutes you want. the default
setting is 2 subsitutes out of 5, which means that out of your 5
subsitutes, you can only bring 2 on.

Select "ok" and "Choose Teams" and then select the 2 you want from
the large selection of teams. Remember, you cant mix teams up. For
example you can't have Man Utd playing England so dont even try.
To select your team, move the cursor over them and hit enter. Red
means the computer controls them, Purple means you control them,
and Blue means you manage the team from the sidelines. After you
have selected the teams, Select "play friendly" or de-select one
of the teams to choose another.

/         VI. Custom Leagues And Cup Competitions              \
  -+-+-+-+--+-+-+-+--+-+-+-+--+-+-+-+--+-+-+-+--+-+-+-+--+-+-+-+-

Sensible Soccer 96-97 allows you to create your own leagues and
cups. Maybe you want to have a European Super League or maybe
you want to have your own unofficial World Cup? Whatever you
want, you can hold it here.

After you select "DIY Competition" from the main menu, select
a League, Cup, Or Tournament.

                       ### A. Leagues ###

If you select a League, Name it, then choose the season. Remember,
this determines the weather of the competition so choose carefully.
The default slection is August - May.

Next, choose the number of teams in your league. The most you can
have is 24. The default Selection is 2.

Now, choose how many times the teams play each other. remember,
the more times they play each other the more games the teams will
have to play. Choosing 24 teams and making them play each other
twice will mean that they will play 46 games. However, if you have
24 teams and make them play each other 10 times, they will play a
whopping 230 games!! The default selection is once.

Next, choose the number of points for a win. Selecting 2 points for
a win will mean that teams wont drop so many points when they lose
or win games, but they wont regain them if they start to win, so it
dosent make much difference. The default selection is 2

Now select the number of subsitutes you want. the default selection
is 3 subsitutes out of 5, which means that out of your 5 subsitutes,
you can only bring 3 on.

Select "ok" and "Choose Teams" and then select the teams you want from
the large selection avaliable. Remember, you cant mix teams up. For
example, you can't have Man Utd playing England so dont even try.
To select your team, move the cursor over them and hit enter. Red
means the computer controls them, Purple means you control them,
and Blue means you manage the team from the sidelines. After you
have selected the teams, Select "play league" or de-select one of the
teams to choose another.

                       ### B. Cups ###

If you select a Cup, Name it, then choose the season. Remember,
this determines the weather of the competition so choose carefully.
The default slection is August - May.

If you want 2 legs you can select if you want "Away Goals" on or not.
Away Goals means that if Man Utd were playing Arsenal, and they drew
0-0 at Old Trafford but drew 1-1 at Highbury, Man Utd would win because
they scored more goals playing away. This adds to the suspence and fun
of the competition. The default selection is off. (If you choose only
1 leg in each round, the option wont be avaliable)

Now select the number of rounds you want. The more rounds you have,
the more difficult it is to win. The most you can have is 6 and the
default selection is 4.

Now select the number of subsitutes you want. the default selection
is 3 subsitutes out of 5, which means that out of your 5 subsitutes,
you can only bring 3 on.

Next is the individual round options. The "legs" is the number of
matches the teams play eatch other. If you select one then the home
team is randomly selected. If you select 2, then each team will have
a shot of playing at home. Extra Time happens if the score is equal
at the end of the match (although if away goals are on, it may not
go to extra time). Extra Time is like a mini match except that there
is only 15 minuites per half. If one team goes ahead and holds their
lead to the end, they win the match. The dreaded penalty shootout
occurs it the two teams are inseperable even after extra time.
Each team gets 5 penalties, and whoever has scored more at the end
of 5 wins. If this is still equal then they will cntinue and the
first to miss loses. If you dont choose extra time or penalties,
the game will be replayed.

After you
have selected the teams, Select "play cup" or de-select one of the
teams to choose another.

                       ### C. Tournaments ###

If you select a Tournament, Name it, then choose the season.
Remember, this determines the weather of the competition so
choose carefully. The default slection is August - May.

Now select the number of subsitutes you want. the default selection
is 3 subsitutes out of 5, which means that out of your 5 subsitutes,
you can only bring 3 on.

Next is the individual round options. In the first round,
the number of teams in it is infact the number of teams in
the entire tournament. In the second round and so on, the
number of teams you choose determines how many get knocked
out in the previous around. For example, if you have 20
teams in the first round, and 10 in the second, 10 will
get knocked out in the First round. If you want the full
6 rounds, make sure that you have more than 2 teams in
the fith round. The default selection of rounds is 5.
Then select how that round is to be played. It can be
done in groups, little leagues similar to the world
cup, or in a knockout, a bit like how a cup is played.
What happens in a round is written below the individual
round. If you select seeding, the best teams will be
kept apart in the round it is selected on. For example,
if you have 2 groups of 4 and you have selected Brazil
and Italy and thse are the best sides in the tournament,
they will be kep apart in the seeded round.
Next, choose the number of points for a win. Selecting 2 points for
a win will mean that teams wont drop so many points when they lose
or win games, but they wont regain them if they start to win, so it
dosent make much difference. The default selection is 2
Now, choose how many times the teams play each other. remember,
the more times they play etch other the more games the teams will
have to play.

After you
have selected the teams, Select "play tournament" or de-select one
of the teams to choose another.

One of the most fun aspects of Sensible Soccer 96/97 is the
ability to create your own teams. You could have a team full
of you friends or maybe you could have the Babes XI full of
your favorite women? Whatever you want to do, this is how
you go about it.

First of all, select "Edit Custom Teams" from the main menu
and then select "Edited Custom Teams". Selecting "Original
Custom Teams" will delete the team you edit forever so hands
off.

Now choose which team you wish to edit. The best team is
"Sensible FC" so it may be a good idea to put your own
personal team as them. In the team's screen, move your
cursor over the teams name to change it, and the same for
the players and managers name. To change what the player
looks like, move the cursor over the face and hit the
select button. To change the teams kit, move over the
cursor ove the part of kit you wish to change, hold down
your select button, and press left and right. If you
want to change the design of the jersey, move the cursor
over the design and hit select.

After you have finished, select "ok" and then select "save"
and you have your own team!

Your team can play in a friendly or any DIY Compeition against
other Edited teams.

This is the most pointless aspect of the game.
The idea is to move the cursor over the ball, move it to an area
of the pitch, and then move the players to where you would like
them to be at that time.

To copy the tactics so you can use them on another, select "copy"
If you make a mistake, select "undo". To import one of the in game
tactics, select "import" and select the relavent one. To save it,
select "save/exit" and then select "save" then name you file and
select save again.

If you want my personal opinion, you should leave this aspect of
the game out, as there is no way to create a "killer" tactic of
the game and anyways, you have me to help you through it! What
else do you need?

then and then gloat over them to friends and family.

To view them, play a match and as along as there are goals

and then "View Highlights" The goals will then be replayed.
To save them, select "save highlights", give them a name,
and then press the select button.

It's match day. The fans are chanting and your players wait
inside the tunnel for the signal to come on. As manager, the
hairs on you're arm are tingling with anticipation of the task
ahead. But, you think, am I using the right players? Is my
formation effective? Did the wife remember to tape "Big Brother?"

These emotions are fine. And the match engine is what Sensible
Soccer is all about. But if you have any nerves now, you wont
as soon as you have read my guide.

                     ### A. The Controls ###

If you want to control your side, you need to know how to make
them do what you want, right? You would have chosen your control
method when you installed the game.

KEYBOARD - You should use the arrow keys to move the players and
the return key (for right handed people) or the left shift key
(for left handed people). In this guide, I refer to the return
key as the "selection" key.

To slide tackle, press the selection key when you dont have
possesion of the ball.

To pass, tap the selection key once and your player will pass
to the closest player in the direction he is facing.

To shoot, press the selection key firmly and your player will
shoot in the direction he is facing.

CONTROLLER/JOYSTICK - Unfortuantly, despite my god like powers,
I cant even start to guess what you'r controller looks like.
If it has one button, use it in the same way you would use a
keyboard. If you have 2 buttons, assign 1 to shoot and the other
to pass and slide tackle. If you have 3 buttons or more, assign
one button to each action.

OTHER IN GAME CONTROLS - To bring up the subsitutes bench, press
Page Up if you are shooting up, and Page Down if you are shooting
down.

                      ### B. Formations ###

Formations are very importent in games as they can turn games either
way. Some are used to defend slender leads, and others are there so
you can pile on the pressure if you are trailing in the dying minuites.

4-4-2 - This is the formation which handed England the world cup in
1966. It employs flat back four, a flat midfield and two strikers.
Use this tactic if you are coming across a team who you think as
pretty mush the same ability as you and adjust as the game wears on.

5-3-2 - This formation is used by the German national side to good effect.
Using 5 defenders, the opposition has a hard time finding space for its
strikers and must put more players into attack in an attempt to force the
game. However, so many players in defence limit your attacking options so
try and break quickly. This is best used against superior oppsition.

4-2-4 - This is an attacking formation which will create a lot of chances
without leaving you open at the back. This formation has one huge drawback,
which is that the extremley weak midfield will constantly be outnumbered
by the opposition, so try and direct your defence's passes to the attack.
This is best used against sides that dont have a great defence.

5-2-3 - This tactic is very good defensivley and does create chances but is
let down by its midfield, try and break quickly and try to direct passes from
defence to attack. Best used against superior opposition, but with the aim to
steal a goal.

5-4-1 - This tactic is all about defence! Usually employed by small footballing
nations against the top national teams of the world, the formation involves
bundling five at the back and four in midfield in an attempt to keep possesion
and limit the oppositions chances. However, you'r attacking options are sevearly
limited so try and break quickly. Best used against superior opposition.

3-5-2 - This tactic is rarely used but can be effective if used correclty.
The 5 men in midfield can be used to combact formations suce as 4-2-4 because
you outnumber the other teams midfield leading to more possesion. However, if you
have a weak defence expect to leak a lot of goals. Use it only if you trust your
defenders.

3-4-3 - Similar to 3-5-2, this increases the potential of scoring in place of
losing some possesion. Best used if you have a good defence and attack.

ATTACK - This formation bundles 5 men in attack but sevearly limits your options
in midfield and defence. This is the most riskiest formations and if you use it
out of hand, expect disasters. This is best used in the dying minuites when you
are despratley in need of a goal.

4-5-1 - Similar to the 5-4-1 formation, one man is taken from defence and placed
in midfield which only very slightly raises your attacking options. This is the
most pointless formation out there, as it dosent make sence to replace defence
with midfield since you only have one attacker. play a 4-4-2 instead. Best used
in your bin.

4-3-3 - This slight adjustment to the 4-4-2 formation sacrafices a man in midfield
for one in attack. This is very useful if you have three great strikers and you cant
decide which 2 to play. Best used against teams that only play 3 in defence or
weaker sides.

SWEEP - This formation is a 5-3-2 with a "sweeper" in place. This is someone who
sits behind the defence "sweeping up" any through balls played by the opposition
and stopping players who break through your ranks. In real life, sweepers stop a
lot of offsides on your account, but since there are no offsides in Sensible Soccer,
maybe you should employ this instead of 5-3-2. Best used against sides with speedy
attackers.

DEFENCE - The direct opposite to Attack, this formation bundles as many players as
posible in defence to try and stop the goals flying in. Of cource, you should
abandon all hope of scoring goals should you employ this tactic. Best used in the
dying minuites if you are trying to protect a slender lead against superior
opposition.

                       ### C. Assessing Your Players ###

To have a football team, you need players and yo must have the ability
to tell which players have the skill of David Beckham, and also the
players that have the ability of a mouse.

In career mode, the quickest way to judge a player is thorugh his
value. A player worth 5 million is going to destroy a player worth
25k. Players with high values don't rely so much on their stats so
much as i'll explain later in the guide but if put up against a
player of a similar value than the stats are the only way of
telling them apart.

In anywhere else other than in career mode, the players are judged
by stars. Obviousily, a player with 1 small star is going to have
as much chance of scoring a goal as Elvis. And he's dead.
Stars are much the same as value but since you have no need to
know their value in friendlies or custom leagues, they are favoured.

If you have two players up against each other that are both worth
1 million, your only alternative is to have a look at their stats.
Next to a players name are 3 letters inside some brackets. These
letters are the players skills, and while it dosent mean that they
suck at everything else, it does mean that they excel at these aspects
of the game than anyone who dosent have them inside their top three.

Remember that value (or stars) plays a large part in their stats, as
a player worth 100k is going to be a lot slower than a player's worth
3 million even if he has it in his stats and the 3 million player dosent.
However, he will be a lot quicker than anyone valued with or under him.

Here is a breakdown of the stats.

TACKLING (T) - The player is good at tackling. Great for a defender, but
useless anywhere else.

HEADING (H) - Good for any position, this. Good headers of the ball will
send the ball miles off their forehead.

SPEED (S) - Extremley fast, these players get to loose balls before anyone
else. Wingers will enjoy having this stat, but it wont hurt to have a quick
striker or defender, too.

PASSING (P) - The player's passing will excel. Good for a midfielder and
wont do any harm anywhere else.

BALL CONTROL (C) - Hurrah! Surley a god send! One of the most annoying
things about Sensible Soccer is that if a player who sucks at ball control
keeps posession for too long will see the ball trickle out of his feet if
he attempts to turn or even pass. Most players over 3 million (or 2 and a
half stars) will have this anyway, but anyone lower than that with this
ability will be gifted and very sought after.

SHOOTING (V) - For some reason, Shooting is represented by a "v" in the
game. This stat enables great and more accurate shooting. Good for strikers,
and more use that a hole in a parachute anywhere else.

FINISHING (F) - If left with a empty net, a player must still slot the ball
home. This is called "finishing". Anyone with bad finishing runs the risk
of missing so it dosent hurt to have at least one striker with this ability.

        ### D. Subsitutions/Changing Formation within a game ###

Usually, in most matches you will have to make a subsitution or change
formation. This is usually due to player injuries or events during the
game but sometimes you may just want to shake things around for the hell
of it.

To make a subsitution during a game, wait for the ball to go out of play
and then press page up if you are shooting up, and page down if you are
shooting down. (press left twice on a controller) Your bentch is the one
at the top and you are the guy in the brown coat who seems to be constantly
screaming at your players, which isnt nice, is it? Anyways, to make a sub,
simply move the arrow down to one of the players and then select one of the
players from the list to swap them around. Incidently, if there is a first
aid marker against a players name, panic, as he is carrying an injury
and panic even further if it is flashing, as he is hurt very badly indeed
and needs to be replaced.

Changing formations could'nt be easier either. If you select the manager,
he will stand up (still screaming and shouting though) and you can change
your formation.

                         ### E. Match Stats ###

Not just a nice touch, the stats give you a indication of what you must do
or carry on doing in order to get the desired score. The stats appear at
the end of the first half and at the end of the match.

GOALS - If your opponent has more of these, you'r losing! Correct this.

POSSESSION - If you'r opponent has a lot more of this, your midfield is
being overpowered, correct it with a formation change.

GOAL ATTEMPTS - Basicly, any shots you have fired towards his goal. If
you dont have any, consider changing formation to a more attackng minded
one.

ON TARGET - How many of the atempts forced the keeper to save. More is good.

CORNERS WON - How many corners you and the oppisition have won. If they have
a lot it is'nt bad as your defence and corners really don't amount to much, so
dont worry.

FOULS CONCEDED - How many fouls you have conceded. If you are conceding a lot,
dont try try tackling an opponent when he has his back to you.

BOOKINGS - Oops! The plaer has been cautioned and if he recieves one more
yellow, he heads for an early bath. Consider a sub.

SENDINGS OFF - A player has been sent off and the team is down to ten. If
this happens to you fill the gap as best you can. (more of this in X.F)

                         ### F. General Advice ###

1. Scoring can be tricky but the best way to go about it is to try and
shoot at an angle at the edge of the penalty area or facing straight
on with the goal just inside the inside post.

2. If a player gets sent off, sacrafice a striker and play with one to
fill the gap if you'r winning, but you may have to scrafice someone in
midfield if you need a goal. Of cource this really depends on the
opposition. Just look at the team and say "ok, should i be beating these
guys?" if the awnser is no, then discrestion is the better part of valor,
so play for a draw.

3. If a plaer gets knocked down and starts clutching his leg, subsitute
him straight away. Unforuantly, you can't always see if he's injured so
check the subs bench every 1o minuites or so to see if anyone is carrying
anything nasty.

4. If a plaer is running away from you, resist the temptation to slide
tackle as this leads to fouls and passibly worse. When tackling, you
should do it from the front.

5. Penalties can come thick in fast so careful. If you win one, always
go to your left or right and hammer the selection button. If your player
is a good shooter, he should score. If you concede one, you have no
control over your keeper, so just pray.

  /                   XII. Your Career                          \
  -+-+-+-+--+-+-+-+--+-+-+-+--+-+-+-+--+-+-+-+--+-+-+-+--+-+-+-+-

Well this is it then, the sole reason you probably clicked on the link
for this FAQ. As I mentioned earlier in the guide, I cant "walk" you
through your career as there is no ultimate tactic, or any cheats to
speak off. However, I can give you a real kick up the arse so keep your
eyes glued to the screen and read on or i'll send the lads round!

                     ### A. Getting Started ###

To get started on your career, select "career" from the main menu.
Your next job is to select your name. Of cource, I cant help you
with that but note the fact that you can change you're title to
"MS" if you like. I'm saying nothing.

Next bit is to choose your nationality. Now this is important, your
nationality will decide which country you will manage if they decide
to offer you the position so choose carefully. Most people will tend
to choose their own nationality which is fair enough, but should you
want to manage France, put on a striped shirt, some onions and a silly
hat and pretend to be French for the day.
Incidently, thewre is another "nationality" called "other" dont select
it. You wont get the chance to manage a country otherwise.

Now select if you want to control your team or not. (remember, purple
means player coach, and blue means coach) I suggest that you simply skip
the matches until you think the team is strong enough to control on your
own but it really is up to you. You should never, ever let the computer
control your team. To say it sucks would be an understatment.

Next comes the fun part. CHOOSING YOUR TEAM!!

                         ### B. Albania ###

NO OF TEAMS - 16

CUP COMPETITION - 4 Rounds, Away goals, Semi Final contains 2 legs.

Albainia has never been a great footballing nation and the league reflects
this. Most of the teams contain very poor players with not much ability.
This is probably why the entire league contains no foreigners at all.
If you choose to earn your living here, try taking on Dinamo Tirana or
Partizani Tirani, in ral life they are bitter rivals and both stand an
equal chance of winning.

BEST PLAYERS - Ilir Shulku (LB) (Partizani Tirani), Agron Xhafa (A)
(Dinamo Tirana), Sokol Prenga (M) (SK Tirana)

                         ### C. Austria ###

NO OF TEAMS - 10

CUP COMPETITION - 3 Rounds

Austria is a strong nation with a good footballing history. The league
has pleanty of good players with a lot of forigners. If you want to
have a crack here try managing Rapid Vienna. In real life, they are
constantly winning the league

BEST PLAYERS - Peter Stoger (M) (Rapid Vienna), Michael Konsel (G)
(Rapid Vienna), Dietmar Kuhbauer (M) (Rapid Vienna)

                         ### D. Belarus ###

NO OF TEAMS - 16

CUP COMPETITION - 4 Rounds

Belarus was formed on the break up of the U.S.S.R in the 90's and to
be fair, the players here are pretty good. However, the league dosen't
have any foreigners yet. The best team by far is Dinamo Minsk, dont
expect anyone else to come close.

BEST PLAYERS - Sergey Baranovsky (A) (Dinamo Minsk), Valery Velichko
(A) (Dinamo Minsk), Dimitry Klimovich (D) (Dinamo Minsk)

                         ### E. Bulgaria ###

NO OF TEAMS - 16

CUP COMPETITION - 4 Rounds, Away Goals, 2 legs in the first 3 rounds

Bulgaria have a good footballing past and have produced many a good
player. Bulgaria have never had much succsess either in International
competitions or at club level but still have a good standard in their
league, which is reflected by a few foreigners earning their wage here.
Try playing as CSKA Sofia or Lokomotiv Sofia for the best chance of
winning.

BEST PLAYERS - Georgi Georgiev (LW) (CSKA Sofia), Petar Mikhtarski (A)
(CSKA SOFIA), Anton Dimitrov (A) (Slavia Sofia)

                         ### F. Croatia ###

NO OF TEAMS - 12

CUP COMPETITION - 3 Rounds, Away Goals, All rounds have 2 legs

Croatia have a young history and have a good footballing team that
have gained the respect they deserve from the big footballing sides
in the world. Davor Sukar is probably the greatest player to ever
come from Croatia. The standard is fairly good and a handful of
forigners reside here. Choose Hajduk Split or Croatia Zagreb if you
want the best chance of winning here.

BEST PLAYERS -  Zlatko Darlic (LW) (Hajduk Split), Renato Jurcec (A)
(Hajduk Split), Igor Cvitanovic (A) (Croatia Zagreb)

                         ### G. Cyprus ###

NO OF TEAMS - 14

CUP COMPETITION - 3 Rounds, Away Goals, First 2 rounds have 2 legs

One of the minnows of Europe, Cyprus would seem to be a good place
for a challenging start as the players are not as bad as one would
presume. Dont expect to be winning the Champions League anytime
soon, though. Bizzarely, Cyprus contains a bucket load of forigners!
hmm, must be the weather.....oh who cares, choose Apoel Nicosia by the
way, you dont stand a chance with anyone else.

BEST PLAYERS - Kalman Kovacs (A) (Apoel Nicosia), Jozsef Kiprich (A)
(Apoel Nicosia), Costas Costa (RB) (Apoel Nicosia)

                      ### H. Czech Republic ###

NO OF TEAMS - 16

CUP COMPETITION - 4 Rounds

Despite the Czech Republic's young age as a nation, they have a great
footballing side which bosts such players as Parcel Nedved and Patrik
Burger wgo played for Liverpool for a while. Their are a few foreigners,
but they are all Slovakians, so it's a bit like a Scotsman playing in
England. You would be mad not to choose Slavia Prague or Sparta Prague,
as they never fail to dominate the Czech league in real life and wont
here, either.

BEST PLAYERS - Daniel Smejkal (M) (Slavia Prague), Vlastimil Svoboda (RW)
(Sparta Prague), Lubos Kubik (D) (Slavia Prague)

                         ### I. Denmark ###

NO OF TEAMS - 12

CUP COMPETITION - 3 Rounds, Away Goals, 2 Legs in semi final

Probably best known for Mermaids and Legoland, Denmark hides a suprisingly
good Footballing past. Of cource, you would be a fool not to know that
Peter Schmichael is quite possibly their greatest football figures to grace
the eart. Denmark won the 1992 European Championship and they have a good
league standard with a few foreigners. One of the strangest things about the
teams in Denmark is that they're all pretty good so choose anyone but Vejle
and you should be in with a chance.

BEST PLAYERS - Henrik Rasmussen (M)(AAB) Todi Jonsson (A) (Lyngby),
Lars Hojer Nielsen (M) (FC Copenhagen)

                           ### J. England ###

NO OF TEAMS - 20 (Premier Division) 24 (1st Division) 24 (2nd Division) 24

CUP COMPETITIONS - League Cup - 6 Rounds, Away Goals, 2 Legs in 2nd round and Semi Final
English Cup - 6 Rounds

Ahh, The greatest league in the world and the place where it all started. It may be intresting
to know that Football in medievil times was played a lot like Rugby where there were
50 a side games betweenvillages and killing was encouraged. Anyways, as for the
English League, it is,of cource at a great standard jam packed full of Foreigners.
A good challenge here is to try and take 3rd Division time wasters Torquay United
and try to make them champions league winners within 10 years but you're not reading
this section for the biggest challenge are you? That's right it's the instant glory
you want, so try Manchester United, Liverpool or Arsenal for size.

BEST PLAYERS - Alan Shearer (A) (Newcastle United), Dennis Bergkamp (A)
(Arsenal), Ryan Giggs (LW) (Manchester United)

                           ### K. Estonia ###

NO OF TEAMS - 12

CUP COMPETITION - 3 Rounds, Away Goals, 2 Legs in Semi Final

Footballing minnows Estonia can't really boast about their league
so much as it contains no one who stands out and contains one brave
foreigner, Lithuanian Viktoras Olshanks who plays for Flora Tallin
who, along with Norma Tallin, should be considered for a career here.

BEST PLAYERS - Urmas Hepner (M) (Norma Tallin), Yuri Churilkin (M)
(Norma Tallin), Martin Reim (A) (Flora Tallin)

                         ### J. Faroe Islands ###

NO OF TEAMS - 10

CUP COMPETITION - 3 Rounds, Away Goals, 2 Legs in Semi Final

The Faroe Islands is a small collection of islands near Iceland
and as such, dont have much of a Football team. What's worse is
that the Faroes aren't really a country, they belong to Denmark.
Fortuantly, they aren't hammered all the time and even worry
the big boys when they travel to the hapless islands. In the
game however, the league standard is poor and there is only 3
foreginers, 2 Icelanders and a Polishman. Choose HB.

BEST PLAYERS - Uni Arge (A) (HB), Kari Reynheim (M) (HB),
Jan Dam (RW) (HB)

                   ### K. Finland ###

NO OF TEAMS - 12

CUP COMPETITION - 3 Rounds

Finland have a fair national team which always seem to keep
a low profile and not do anything. Harsh you may think, for
a country which produced legend Jari Litamen. As for the
league it contains some good players and quite a few foreigners
including 3 Brazillians. Try out FC Jazz, the name itself should
win a trophy.

BEST PLAYERS - Sako Laaksonen (A) (FC Jazz), Niclas Gronhalm (A),
(Mypa), Mika Viljanen (D) (Mypa)

                       ### L. France ###

NO OF TEAMS - 20 (Premiere Division) 22 (Deuxmeire Division)

CUP COMPETITION - 5 Rounds

France then, we like to critisise them but they did win the world
cup (although they did cheat) in '98. Most of the top French players
like Henry and Zidane play in more glamourous leagues but it dosent
mean you should skip the Frence league at all, There is two divisions,
and there is plenty of Foreigners for evryone. If you want to live on
a diet of Reptiles, horses and insects then choose Paris St-Germain.
In the game they are your best hope of succsess, but in real life
that just isnt the case.

BEST PLAYERS - Anderson Da Silva (A) (Monaco), Leonardo (LW)
(Paris St-Germain), Bernard Lama (GK) (Paris St-Germain)

                       ### M. Germany ###

NO OF TEAMS - 18 (1.Liga) 18 (2.liga)

CUP COMPETITION - 5 Rounds

As much as we hate to admit it, Germany are one of the most
succsessful teams ever. They have wne the world cup and the
European Championship just for fun and even made it to the
final of the 2002 world cub before being stuffed by Brazil
There are 2 leagues to choose from, and both are a good
standard capable of suppporting a new manager such as
yourself. Plenty of foreigners mean more fun! If you want
to start off on the right foot, pick Bayern Munich or
Bor. Dortmund.

BEST PLAYERS - Jurgen Klinsmann (A) (Bayern Munich),
Mattias Sammer (D) (Bor. Dortmund) Steffen Effenberg (M)
(Monchengladbach)

                        ### N. Greece ###

NO OF TEAMS - 18

CUP COMPETITION - 4 Rounds, Away Goals, 2 legs in first 3 rounds

These boys invented the olympics! A lot of us remember Greece from
the '94 world cup when everyone steamrollered over them, but Greece
have a great side capable of scaring the most capeable of teams.
Greece, by the way, where the team Sir Beckham scored a last minuite
free kick against to ensure safe passage to the 2002 world cup.
The league standard here is fair with some foreigners in there to
keep things intresting. Club wise, choose AEK Athens, Olympiakos or
Panathinaikos.

BEST PLAYERS - Themistoklis Nikolaids (A) (AEK Athens), Andreas
Niniadis (A) (Olympiakos), Juan Jose Borelli (M) (Panathinaikos)

                        ### O. Holland ###

NO OF TEAMS - 18 (Premier Division) 18 (First Division)

CUP COMPETITION - 5 Rounds

Holland, one of the top nations in Europe, boast a decent league here
with a load of foreigners and a First Division to ensure the threat
of relegation. If you want to wear clogs, pick tulips and look at
windmills, you've come to the right place. Try going for PSV or Ajax
if you want to hold aloft the championship.

BEST PLAYERS - Patrick Kluivert (A) (Ajax), Marc Overmars (LW) (Ajax),
Luc Nilis (A) (PSV)

                       ### P. Hungary ###

NO OF TEAMS - 16

CUP COMPETITION - 4 Rounds, Away Goals, 2 Legs every Round

Hungary, prehaps one of the dark horses of Europe, have a great national
side capable of troubling the big boys when it comes down to the crunch.
However, preople always presume that the standard in Hungary isnt so hot.
Infact, it's rather good. It has it's foreigners, and top side Ferencvaros
can hold their own in Europe, and so will you when you select them.

BEST PLAYERS - Ferenc Horvath (A) (Ferencvaros), Krisztian Lisztes (M)
(Ferencvaros), Andras Telek (D) (Ferencvaros)

                        ### Q. Iceland ###

NO OF TEAMS - 10

CUP COMPETITION - 3 Rounds

Iceland, compared to the other scandinavian countries aren't so hot
compared to the cream of Europe but these days a lot of their players
collect their wages from such places as Stamford Bridge and the Nou
Camp. The league standard is'nt good and that is reflected in the game.
There are a few foreigners kicking about, and you should select IA for
your icy cold adventure.

BEST PLAYERS - Bjarki Petursson (A) (IA), Haraldur Ingolfsson (M) (IA),
Zoran Milkovic (RB) (IA)

                        ### R. Israel ###

NO OF TEAMS - 16

CUP COMPETITION - 4 Rounds

Some would say that Israel is not part of Europe and I would agree, since
it is a comels throw away from the Middle East and Africa. Israel have
never done anything special in Football and their league standard is
nothing to write home about. Bizzarely, there are tons of players from
Russia and the former U.S.S.R cutting their wage here. I have no idea why.
Try selecting Maccabi Tel-Aviv or Maccabi Haifa.

BEST PLAYERS - Itzhak Zohar (M) (Maccabi Tel-Aviv), Nir Klinger (M)

Ahh Bonjourno! Italy! Surley one of the greatest nations to ever the
grace the football pitch. Aside from winning tons of World Cups and
European Championships, Italy constantly win the hearts of our women
with their flowing black locks, rugged, tanned skin and their "sexy
voice". This place would seem to be the perfect place to start your
career. Packed with foreigners, the league contains the best in
Europe. If I were not to limit my "Best Players" to 3, this FAQ would
be somewhere in the region of 2000KB! Club wise, and this is tough,
go for either one of the following - AC Milan, Juventus, Inter Milan,
Roma, Florentina, Parma.

BEST PLAYERS - George Weah (A) (AC Milan), Gabriel Batistuta (A)

A former U.S.S.R State, latvia has made some good progress in it's
short life span and has produced great players such as Martin Pahars.
The league standard is'nt great and only contains 10 teams, but it
does contain 3 foreigners, 2 Russians and a brave boy from Belarus.
Team wise, try Skonto Riga.

BEST PLAYERS - Alexandr Yeliseyev (A) (Skonto Riga), Einars Gnedoy

                       ### U. Lithuania ###

NO OF TEAMS - 12

CUP COMPETITION - 3 Rounds, Away Goals, 2 Legs first 2 Rounds

Lithuania, a former U.S.S.R state has made some good progress in it's
short life span and respect is growing for it every day. However, the
league standard isnt great and it should'nt be taken seriousily just
yet. Strangley, the Lithuainian league contains 4 Russian players who
ALL play for the hard to pronounce Tauras-Karsuva. Club wise choose
Zalgiris Vilnuis and dive into the unknown.

BEST PLAYERS - Darius Maciulevicius (M) (Zalgiris Vilinuis),
Donatas Vencevicius (M) (Zaligiris Vilinus), Andrius Tereskinas (LB)

Luxembourg is a small country in the centre of Europe surrounded by
France, Germany and Belgium. You'd think that having 3 Great Footballing

unfortuantly, Luxembourg Suck. However their league standard is'nt
too bad and they do have a few foreigners so it may not be the worst
place in the world to start your career at. Select Jeunesse Esch.

                  ### Y. Northern Ireland ###

NO OF TEAMS - 16

CUP COMPETITION - 4 Rounds

The problem with Northern Ireland is that all of their top players
leave for England which is a shame considering that some of the teams
dont have a single player over 100k. However all is not lost, as this
league is very competitive, and they do have a few foreigners. Linfield
are the best, but Bangor, Crusaders and Glenavon look good too.

BEST PLAYERS - Dessie Gorman (A) (Linfield), Pat Fenlon (M) (Linfield),
Gary Haylock (A) (Linfield)

                      ### Z. Norway ###

NO OF TEAMS - 14

CUP COMPETITION - 3 Rounds

Norway are a great nation who can challenge anyone in Europe and their
league is a good one, but not as competitive as Denmark's. No club here
are treated as "beat boys" which basicly means that no one team always
seems to get beaten so if it's a challenge you're after, try anyone
but Rosenborg. But I guess you are going to choose Rosenborg. Quite
a few Foreigners, too.

BEST PLAYERS - Steffern Iversen (A) (Rosenborg), Tron Egil Soltvedt

Portugal boast some of the best players in Europe, such as Luis Figo.
However, these guys play for the big Italian or Spanish clubs which
sometimes leave the local Portuguese clubs a bit left out. Dont panic
though, there are some great local and foreign players hanging about
to provide us with a great league. Try your hand at Sporting Lisbon
or FC Porto.

BEST PLAYERS - Emmanual Amunike (LW) (Sporting Lisbon), Jardel (A)

Romania has provided us with players such as the great Hagi, so you
would think that a lot of players would be willing to play in it's
league. Strangley however, only Macedonian Serghei Kirilov of Sportal
Stuv does. The Romanian league has a good standard. Selecting Staua
Bucharest should prove useful.

BEST PLAYERS - Cristian Ciocoiu (A) (Staua Bucharest), Daniel Prodan

Since the break up of the U.S.S.R, Russia has'nt been the country it

NO OF TEAMS - 10

CUP COMPETITION - 3 Rounds

Welcome to the worst place in Europe. San Marino's national side constantly
gets a hammering in real life and the standard is poor. Only one player is
worth 100k and the only foreginer is Italian time waster Roberto Casaedi who
dares to play for equally useless club side Cailungo. You may think i'm
being a bit harsh but just watch or play a match between 2 of them. It's
laughable. If you do want a challenge, try managing their top side Domagnano to
Champions league victory. Be quick though, as soon as you load on some
half decent players you will quickly fall into debt.

BEST (and I use the term lightly) PLAYERS - Gianluigi Zanotti (RB)

starting your career in Great Britain. The premier division is of
good quality with plenty of foreigners to spice things up.

anyone else other than Rangers or Celtic. If you dont want a

foreigners.  If you want to settle here, try taking over the
