Shinichi Kashiwagi is lost. Dissatisfied with the direction his life
is talking, he heads up to the mountains to find himself. Towards the
end of his vacation he's made little progress but gets caught in a
storm. In the chaos of the weather he falls down a steep incline and
loses consciousness...
When he awakes he's in a fine mansion. Many other people are living
there, but no one can seem to answer questions about the place.
Shinichi tries to leave, but the gates won't open. The mansion holds
everyone captive. The others have given up; they are resigned to
staying at the mansion for eternity. Does Shinichi have the strength
to escape the mansion, or will he fade away like the others?
Nocturnal Illusion is a click-and-click menu driven adventure game.
You decide where Shinichi visits in the mansion; if he runs into a
woman, you guide him through the interaction. By choosing the right
actions, you move Shinichi towards his ultimate decision.

Shinichi Kashiwagi
------------------
Shinichi's an intelligent young man; he's been studying law a Toshima
University. His life is at a crossroads, though; he's not sure what
type of life he wishes to lead. Will this ordeal help him to find
himself?
The Mistress
------------
She seems to be in charge of the mansion, but she couldn't be more
mysterious; she won't even give Shinichi her name! She carries
herself with grace, like a proper lady. Most of her communication
with Shinichi is cryptic; its hard to gauge how much she knows about
the mansion.
Miwako ?????
------------
Miwako works as the maid in the mansion. Her bashful nature causes
her discomfort when she first meets Shinichi. She always seems sad
but insists on keeping the cause a secret.
Maya Okazaki
------------
Maya's a reporter, and she's the consummate professional. Her
competitiveness gives her personality a hard, grating edge. She
claims to hate all men, but she gets along well enough with Shinichi.
Kunio Kusayama
--------------
Kusayama's computer programmer by profession, but one could best
describe him as an alcoholic. His main activies are to fantasize
about the girls in the mansion and finding another substance to imbibe.
Yukina ?????
------------
Yukina's a beatiful young girl, but she's terrified of Shinichi. He
can't get out more than a few sentences before she runs away screaming.
What's wrong with her?
Misao ?????
-----------
Misao's a redhead, so obviously she's an outspoken, athletic tomboy.
She likes to tease Shinichi, especially when he persists in trying to
escape the mansion.
Sari ?????
----------
With her long silvery hair, Sari possesses an otherworldly beauty.
She only appears at night and spends all her time in the garden; she's
waiting for someone. Where she goes during the day is a mystery.
Yura ?????
----------
Yura comes from a traditional Japanese family, and she's always
dressed in a pure white silk kimono. She's very sheltered and has
little knowledge of the outside world.
Arisa ?????

The true nature of this little girl(19 years old my ass) is unknown.
Shinichi often has visions of her, but she's not seen around the
mansion. Even in those visions though, Arisa seems childish and
playful.

This game seemingly offers the player a great amount of freedom. You
can move Shinichi anywhere in the mansion, look at everything, or check
the contents of rooms. In reality, though, Nocturnal Illusion is a
linear visual novel; the only way to proceed through the game is to
trigger event after event -- examples may be talking to another guest
or searching an area. You'll know when you've found something because
the option to 'Move' Shinichi will disappear from the menu.
Triggering events is quite simple; most of the time you simply have to
move to a certain location. Therefore, if you ever get stuck in the
game, the easiest solution is just to wander the premises until
something does happen. Sounds easy enough, but at certain times you
may find yourself swearing that you've tried every possibilty, yet
you're still stuck. When that happens, perhaps the following guide
will help.
I included not only where you needed to go, but the minimum amount of
menu options you needed to pick once there. Any options I've left
out(usuallly the 'Look' option), are not necessary for the event and
can be skipped. Conversely, if you don't want to skip these options,
choose them before you take the listed action, because after you take
those actions the game will move on whether you like it or not.

Yura, and Yukina have one ending each. The Mistress, Sari, and Arisa
each have two endings : one which is happy and one which is not-so-happy.
After you choose either of the women with two endings, you'll be
provided with one more choice to make. The bad endings omit the quote
after the ending scene plays.

Many bishoujo games include girls who are obviously under the age of
eighteen, making it illegal in North America to depict them engaging
in sexual acts. Most companies get around this by using a disclaimer
explicitly stating that all the girls are over age.
Nocturnal Illusion has two such characters, Arisa and Red Hood.
Despite using the standard disclaimer, the company releasing the
translation of the game still decided to censor some of the images
including the two girls; the pictures of these girls' sex scenes are
replaced by a blank screen. To get around these points in the
original game, one basically had to click frantically on the screen
until the game moved along.
Fortunately, a guy known as BaSFTech made a patch to correct this
problem. Version 1.1 of said patch will restore the deleted scenes in
the game. You should be able to find it on teh intraweb with a little
effort. I'm only including this information here because it should
greatly enhance your enjoyment of the game, don't email me asking for
it. I have no knowledge of how the patch works, so don't email me if
you're having problems installing it. That is all.
