I Introduction
Moon. is a Japanese adult visual novel developed by Tactics, a brand of
Nexton, released on November 21, 1997 playable on Windows PCs. The game was
described by the development team as a "Reaching the Heart AVG" (Kokoro ni
Todoku AVG). The story follows the protagonist Amasawa Ikumi, a girl who
joins an organization called FARGO in the hopes of discovering why and how
her mother died, who was a member of the same group. The gameplay in Moon.
follows a branching plot line which offers pre-determined scenarios with
courses of interaction, and focuses on the three female main characters.
The game ranked twice in the national top 50 for best-selling PC games sold
in Japan.
Much of the staff that created the game later became the founding members of
the visual novel brand Key. Moon. was the starting point for Key's origins,
and was the first time the principal Key team was formed. A novel based on
the game written by Midori Tateyama was released in July 1998 by Movic. The
game's original soundtrack was released bundled with Dosei's soundtrack in
August 2000 at Comiket 58; Dosei was Tactics' first game. Moon. has been
referenced in other media not directly related to the game, such as in
Tactics' third game One: Kagayaku Kisetsu e, and in the second anime
adaptation of Key's first game Kanon.
Moon. is a drama and horror visual novel in which the player assumes the
role of Amasawa Ikumi. Much of its gameplay is spent on reading the story's
narrative and dialogue. Moon. follows a branching plot line with multiple
endings, and depending on the decisions that the player makes during the
game, the plot will progress in a specific direction.
There are three main plot lines that the player will have the chance to
experience, one for each of the heroines in the story. Throughout gameplay,
the player is given multiple options to choose from, and text progression
pauses at these points until a choice is made. To view all plot lines in
their entirety, the player will have to replay the game multiple times and
choose different choices to further the plot to an alternate direction. The
player has to manually navigate through the corridors of FARGO to explore
the surroundings.
The game is split into 20 sub-parts each given a title in English written
mostly in white where a portion of the title is displayed in red, and each
cover a single day. There are seven endings to the game: a single true end,
two normal ends, and four bad ends. In the original game, a bonus role-
playing game became available on the title screen after the game was
completed at least once. This was later removed from the full-voice DVD
edition of the game. There are scenes in Moon. with sexual CGs depicting a
given heroine having sex.
II The Characters
Amasawa Ikumi
(voiced by Ruru)
The main protagonist of the story, Amasawa Ikumi joined FARGO in the hope of
finding out clues about her mother's death, who was a member of the
organization. A young girl with a strong will, she became friends with
Haruka and Yui at Day 1 and helped them achieve their goals while reaching
her own. She was assigned to Class A along with Youko and shares her room
with Shounen. It was revealed during the Elpod scenes that she was a
perverted woman who constantly seeks comfort from the opposite sex,
which stemmed from periods of loneliness she suffered during the time her
mother was gone. Ultimately, she blames FARGO for the death of her mother
and embarked on a bloody quest for revenge.
Mima Haruka
(voiced by Aya)
The first person Ikumi talked to on the way to the FARGO facility, Mima
Haruka later revealed to Ikumi that her goal in joining FARGO was to seek
her brother who is working there. A cool girl with an attitude, she was
assigned to Class C due to her lack of traumatic experiences and as a
result, she suffered through deplorable conditions but managed to preserve
her sanity until at a later point. She often picks on Yui and says funny
comments about her, usually about her breasts' small size.
Nakura Yui
(voiced by Serizono Miya)
The noisy girl with the cellphone at Day 1, Nakura Yui was befriended by
Haruka and Ikumi after they got off the truck at the facility. A cheerful
girl with a warm smile, she joined FARGO to search for her older sister who
also joined a few months ago. She was assigned at Class B. During her
training at the Minmes, it was revealed that she had a traumatic experience
that resulted in the separation of her family. Despite the hardships she
endured at FARGO, she was still able to maintain her cheerful nature.
Kanuma Youko
(voiced by Koue Satomi)
The only other person in training at Class A, Kanuma Youko was already at
the FARGO facility a long time ago before the start of the story. A quiet
girl and a strong believer in FARGO's cause, her ascetic behavior inspired
both pity and awe from Ikumi. When not training, she spends her time
meditating and isolates herself to the point of being ignorant about the
outside world; the console game Ikumi gave her is evidence of that. She
revealed that she was Class C once; an event involving her mother got her
promoted to Class A.
Shounen (Boy or Young Man)
(voiced by Tsunami Arashi)
Ikumi's roommate and her observer, Shounen's true name was never revealed
in the game. A mysterious young male, he lacks common sense regarding boy-
girl relationships which Ikumi frowns upon. As a way of cheering her up, he
would make up bedtime stories, find her a plushie doll, etc. although he is
a bit clumsy in doing so. During critical times however, he would show up
whenever Ikumi is in mortal danger. It was later revealed that he is not a
real human, but that of the "demon" race.
Nakura Yuri
(voiced by Nishida Komugi)
Yui's older sister, Nakura Yuri joined FARGO a few months ago prior to the
story due to traumatic experiences. She shows cold behavior towards her
younger sister to the point of denying her existence. It was revealed that
she was seeking the power offered by the organization to reunite her family
but realized too late that it was useless for that. Ultimately she died
when the power she held in went out of control.
Mima Ryousuke
(voiced by Shemwuyue Li)
Haruka's older brother, Mima Ryousuke works as a Minmes operator at
Building B. After learning of the inhumane nature of the organization,
Haruka tried to persuade Ryousuke to forsake his work but failed. Later on,
he offered Ikumi to help them escape and gave her his access card but was
caught later on. Ultimately he was killed in front of Haruka who was trying
to save him.
Takatsuki
(voiced by Gono Matsuri)
Ryousuke's colleague and the administrator of Building B, Takatsuki is an
arrogant man whose depravity enabled him to engage in acts of perversion
involving Haruka. While Ikumi is imprisoned he revealed to her the true
nature of Shounen and how her mind and body is being slowly corroded. Later
on he was killed by Shounen when the boy was attempting to rescue Ikumi.
"The Voice's Owner"/"Tsuki (Moon)"
(voiced by ????)
The entity who measured the New Believers' aptitude test, he is the symbol
of FARGO and the mastermind of the organization. When Ikumi asked him who
he was at Day 1, he challenged her to seek the answers for herself. His
forms include an old man and the Moon. During their last encounter with
Ikumi, he told her who really killed her mother, and then tried to invade
and break her mind. He was eventually defeated by Ikumi.
III Walkthroughs
True Ending walkthrough:
Below is a complete walkthrough for the True Ending, with choices aimed at
maximizing information you'll receive and add more into your reading
experience. Words/sentences in parenthesis are either your destinations or
tips to proceed to the story. The choices to make during the Elpod training
are given as a separate entry. Feel free to save the game often and
explore the other choices available.
To reach the True Ending, both Yui and Haruka MUST survive. The choices to
make appears during Day 6 and Day 14, respectively, where there are reports
of "Lost Bodies" wandering about. The goal is to bring them into another
character who can help them.

sometimes bump into? He appears at random once everyday and if you meet him
enough, he'll say that if you meet him another 5 times, he'll give you
something good. You must meet him the fifth time on Day 11 for him to reveal

(Choosing the other stores will also connect into a loop.)
(Dining Hall)
Normal Endings Walkthrough
If you were following the above walkthrough to the end but let Yui/Haruka
die, the True Ending will change into a Normal Ending. You can still finish
the game with a Normal Ending, but the extra scenario with both Yui and
Haruka alive and well at the end won't appear. It might not be a pleasant
idea to let them die, but there are a few CGs that will unlock if they do.
For Yui, an alternate title version of Day 7 will appear:
Day 7b: Admirable Little Girl
(Minmes)
(Dining Hall)
- That's not true.
- I'm different.
(Elpod)
(Dining Hall)
(Underground)
- Affirm her.
(Building A)
(My room)
- State my honest opinion.
If you try to meet up with Yui the following day, she won't be there, and
her alternate scenario will play.
For Haruka, the extra CG will show up after a short conversation when Ikumi
wakes up. Day 15 then would be all text and no choices.
After finishing the game, either Yui or Haruka will appear and will give
you a hint on what choices you missed to let them live.
Bad Endings Walkthrough
The game has four bad endings, three of which has something to do with the
Elpod training. There are extra CGs that are only available if you finish
the Bad Endings, so it would be worthwhile to finish them if you are aiming
to complete all the CGs. Depending on which of them you get, a person will
appear after the Bad End title screen and will give you a hint on what went
wrong.
First Bad End: If you wander around the other buildings for no reason at
all, and you got caught by a patrolman, they'll put you in a cell and have
all sorts of horrible things done to you ~_~ . Afterwards the Building A
patrol guard will scold you for being reckless and will tell you not to do
it again. There is a special version of this at Day 16 where the patrolman
will just shoot you instead. If you died at Building B, Ryousuke will appear
afterwards, and if you died at Building C, Yuri will appear instead. The
both of them will tell you to not to wander around the other buildings
pointlessly.
Second Bad End: If you get enough failing grades in the first six Elpod
sessions, on Day 12 your mind will break during the Minmes scene. Afterwards
Shounen will remind you not to neglect your Elpod training.
Third Bad End: If you passed the previous Elpod sessions, but failed the
last two (go ahead and flunk Level 6 too while you're at it: it also has
extra CGs. Your final grade must be 'producing the bare minimum results
needed'). On Day 14 your mind will break during the school life fantasy
scene. Afterwards Youko will point out to you that you were neglecting your
training of reinforcing your mind.
Fourth Bad End: If you passed the previous Elpod sessions enough to avoid
the second and third bad ends, passed Level 7 but failed at Level 8. You
will never get off the looping decision tree at Day 20, and your mind will
break. Afterwards your alternate self will ridicule you for being such a
perverted sl** back at the Elpod >_< .
Elpod Training Walkthrough
One of the main facilities at FARGO, the Elpod is a machine where Believers
train to reinforce their minds. It is similar to the Minmes but it places
even greater stress on the individual. Because of this, rest days are
inserted in between sessions where they can go to the Relaxation room to
rest, and which afterwards they can return to receive their test scores.
Unlike Minmes, there are choices available at the Elpod. Three out of four
of the bad ends are determined by your performance here, so it is vital that
you get a passing grade here if you are aiming for the Normal/True Ending.
The walkthrough below will enable you to get a perfect score on each Elpod
training. If you are aiming for the Bad Endings, simply ignore the choices
listed here.
First Entry
(The choices at first entry will not affect the game, but might as well get
some extra information.)
- Demand an explanation.
- This training.
Level 1
- No...
- I think I can.
- Come clean.
- It was embarrassing.
Level 2
- Answer.
- Why are you asking that?
- Think about it.
Level 3
- Answer.
- No.
Level 4
- I am.
- There is...
Level 5
- I know that.
- You don't need to tell me that.
Level 6
- Undo my restraints.
- Maybe I do want that.
- No... stop.
Level 7
- No, that's not true at all.
- I'll end this without hurting anyone.
Level 8
- Because Haruka tried so hard to help me.
- Make her stop after this.
IV Personal Comments/Review
Before you read this section, let me warn you that there are spoilers here.
I suggest you finish the game first before you read this section. If you
have finished the game (or don't give s*** over spoilers) then read on.
The first time I learned about the game MOON. was when I played a doujin
fighting game called EFZ (Eternal Fighter Zero). Among the playable
characters there was Amasawa Ikumi. I already knew about the other
characters in the game (I've watched Kanon and AIR anime and played the
visual novel ONE before) and was editing my own personal walkthrough for
the game. Naturally I was curious about Ikumi and needed the reference
for her moves, and so I obtained the game. (A little trivia: the voice
actress behind Nakura Yui and Shiina Mayu from the visual novel ONE is the
same person, which is Serizono Miya.)
What I learned before playing the game was that it was of the horror genre,
which was unusual since none of the other works by the company Key (or the
games the core members made when they were still in Tactics) has horror as
its main genre. The main theme of the story was "mental strengthening
through horrible experiences" and implied that the heroines were to undergo
rape and torture, which would probably be the reason they might never ever
make another game like this. Key, as any otaku would know, is one of the
leading visual novel companies today, and the games they make tend to focus
less on H scenes and more on characters and plot. Their formula for their
stories also tend to go [(comedic first half) + (heart-warming romantic
middle) + (tragic separation) + (emotional get together) = "crying game"]
and the only route I know which has a horror theme was with Kawasumi Mai
from Kanon. "So much for the formula on this one," I thought, but then
again, until I played it I wouldn't know, so I just simply sat back and
enjoyed the game.
What I saw and read throughout playing the game totally exceeded my
expectations. During the time I played the game I felt enraged over the
heroines' torturers, felt nervousness as I navigate the various buildings
I'm not familiar with, and would sometimes laugh at their jokes and antics.
I find the scenes at Elpod to be both disturbing and enlightening at the
same time, and felt my mind would break (along with Ikumi's: figuratively
speaking) during the looping decision tree at the boss encounter. In the
end I finished the game the first time with a Normal Ending (I won't tell
you which heroine died on me T_T ), and mind you, I forced myself not to
bother with the walkthrough that came with the English patch which only
provides scant information and tips anyway.
After finishing it there is a feeling of realizing just how insignificant
your horrible experiences might be compared to them. They went through all
that trauma and still they remained strong until the very end, and that is
something to be admired of. "At least Ikumi had a happy ending," I thought.
Then using the walkthrough included in the patch, and every tiny bits and
pieces of hints I got from a certain website, I completed all the other
endings and completed all the CGs.
The story is quite solid, and despite what some people might say, I think
that the H scenes here are an integral part of the story. As I said before,
the main theme of the story was "mental strengthening through horrible
experiences", and what better way is there to torture a girl than raping
and humiliating her? They could've done meditation Shaolin-style, but that
would take years of self-discipline, and FARGO wanted quick results. It
certainly is distasteful to most sane people, but in regards to bringing out
the anger to readers I felt that the scenarios did well in doing just that.
Ikumi's experiences during the Elpod scenes stems from her reminiscing her
past loneliness (except the first Elpod: she just had a bad case of
diarrhea >_< ) finding something other than maternal love but ending up
either using or being used, which her alternate self is pointing out to her
that she became a perverted woman for doing so, and thus is also an integral
part of the story, for the main point in training at the Elpod is to
reminisce on past disgraces. It was designed for the believers to face their
regret, shame or embarassment (in that sense, the way the final boss placed
a burden on Ikumi's mind is similar to the Elpod) and Ikumi having to face
her unpleasant sexual experiences was one of them. Even one of Haruka's
scenarios, which is explained below, is an integral part of the story. (I
find the male voices during the Elpod, especially Level 4, to be hilarious
though (which I would describe as Shiraishi from the anime Lucky Star
turned ero-psycho) and tend to derail from the seriousness of the scenarios,
which I think is not good.)
There are certain issues in the game that I felt needs clarification for
others to read before they go rant about it, and I'll include it here. First
is the issue on why only girls are eligible to be "New Believers" and there
are no male counterparts. The answer can be deduced from Shounen's
explanation where he said an essence of his or his kin's being is "injected"
(take note of that word) into a host. The host is then supposed to control
that essence with her mental strength, and if she fails, that essence will
run out of control and destroy her. The method of "injecting" involves
copulating with the host, thus the source of the essence is a male, for
obvious reasons. Now, if the host is going to be also male, then the whole
game would now have a yaoi overture, which thankfully the writer/s did not
do (since I certainly HATE yaoi btw, no offense to the fujoshi folks out
there).
Next up is Yui's issues with her family. They were once your typical happy
family, always spending happy days together. Then one day, while waiting for
Yui to arrive and give her a surprise birthday party, the sight of Yui with
her tattered clothes and empty eyes when she arrived took them by surprise,
especially her older sister Yuri who once made a vow to always protect her
younger sister. Before you judge Yui's mother and sister for being heartless
in deciding to send Yui away, you should think of Yui's condition back then.
Not only do they have to deal with giving excuses to the neighbors,
teachers and friends, they also have to deal with Yui's apparent homicidal
tendencies, as was evidenced in her attempted killing of her older sister.
Sure, it certainly wasn't her fault for becoming that way, but not only was
Yui becoming a nuisance to them, she was becoming a threat. The father
might oppose the idea of separating Yui, but safety was becoming a concern
for the mother, hence their argument during a certain scene. From here you
can already see the extent of the complexity of their family issues. Yuri
felt that she failed to fulfill her vow and thus joined FARGO to gain the
strength necessary to reunite her family, and her cold attitude towards her
younger sister is justified when she tried to shun her away, for probably
she wanted Yui to escape on her own and didn't want her to suffer the same
fate as she did. She could have been a little bit more honest, but that's
how the story goes.
Then we have Haruka's issue with the H scene involving her older brother. As
explained by Shounen when he was imprisoned, the classes were separated
into A, B and C, and the traumatic experiences the girls had determines
which class they belonged. Ikumi and Youko had a traumatic experience
involving their mothers' deaths and so were assigned to Class A. Had Yui
killed her older sister back then, she would have been assigned to Class A
too, but since Yuri survived, Yui was relegated to Class B. Apparently
Haruka did not have any prior traumatic experiences, so she ended up in
Class C. Clearly, as you might deduce from the treatment Class C was given,
they undergo through the most horrible ordeals due to the lack of traumatic
experiences. If you think about how Haruka was able to become a "Lost Body"
in Day 14, the H scene with Ryousuke would make perfect sense. Ryousuke
died in front of Haruka while she was desperately trying to save him by
following Takatsuki's orders, was probably able to endure it enough not to
become mind broken, FARGO determined that she is ready to be "implanted"
and they certainly did (her experience just then accelerated her training,
to FARGO's point of view. It was the same thing for Youko), but then Haruka
lost control and then went wild. If your counter-argument would be that
Haruka could have been "implanted" without going through that experience,
then that same argument could be applied for each and every girl in the
facility regardless of what they have been through. But as you can probably
deduce from Shounen's explanation, an early "impantation" without surviving
a traumatic experience, and hence not having a strong enough mind, will
cause the essence to break your mind and destroy you without fail. To end
the argument, I'll just say this: to obtain the "invisible strength", either
they must suffer rape and torture over a long period of time and survive
the experience to get "implanted", like in Yuri's case; or suffer seeing
the death of their loved ones and have it added to their shame and regret
and after a short period of time get "implanted", as was the case for Ikumi,
Haruka, and most probably, Youko.
The last issue involves Youko. In the Dining Hall she mentioned she did not
know about the existence of the "Tempering Space" since there are no such
rooms in Building A, but during her scenario at Day 20, she revealed that
she once belonged to Class C, which had one. Either she was lying or
telling the truth. Assuming that she was telling the truth, the explanation
probably would be that she didn't stayed in Building C long enough to
experience that particular room, and either she was "implanted" long ago
and was able to control her power through meditation at Building A, or she
underwent further training and was "implanted" only recently. In any
case, she certainly isn't a virgin anymore (her first man would probably be
one of Shounen's kin, assuming she was a virgin before she came to FARGO).
And also, as explained above, she probably did not have any traumatic
experiences prior to coming to FARGO, and the events that led to her
mother's death (she was also at FARGO btw) was the needed trigger for her
to be promoted to Class A.
The scenarios and CGs at Day 16 and 20 may bother some due to extensive use
of symbolism, so I'll try to explain. The field of flowers Ikumi saw at Day
16 is probably a reference to the outside world the race Shounen belongs to
dream of, since they were shunned inside buildings with no windows and were
prevented from going out, and he wished for that field as his final resting
place during his dying moment. The Moon, one of the "Voice's Owner"'s
revealed forms, is probably a reference to an ancient superstition that the
Moon is the cause of insanity (hence the word "lunatic") and Ikumi is
fighting against the insanity surrounding FARGO. The "shame" mentioned
during the looping decision tree scenario is probably a reference to the
"shame, regret and embarassment" that would prevent people from feeling
such emotions if it were in a physical form.
Now, if you think you can offer a better interpretation than the ones I
gave, then you are free to try and apply it in the game. And if you try to
get the better of me by disproving my previous statements above, it only
shows how much more complex the game's story actually is (that's Maeda-san
and company for you). And by the way, I will not say that the explanations
I gave are correct. You might even say that I'm trying to lead you away
from what the writer/s' intents are. It is up to you then to weigh and judge
to see if the story makes much more sense with it.
One of the moral lessons of the story was summed up by Yui if you happened
to finish the game with the True Ending. This was also pointed out by
Ikumi's alternate self at Elpod and at Day 20. That is, remember your past
pain, accept it, learn from it, and move on with the lessons you learned
within you. In a sense, it is an antithesis to the popular saying "forgive
and forget". That is, "forgive but never forget", or, as implied by Ikumi's
alternate self, "forgive yourself and never forget the pain and lessons
learned". That lesson is also implied in some of Key's other works (Kurata
Sayuri of Kanon and the anime Angel Beats! comes to mind). Whether you
accept or reject what the game's moral message is up to you.
It is one of my views that this game shouldn't be compared to later titles
by Tactics/Key or any other visual novels for that matter. It is an old
game after all, and if I'm ever going to compare it should be to its
predecessors and/or contemporaries to be fair. With that being said, I won't
compare the music, the artwork, the storyline, everything in the game to
anything else and would leave the judging to you readers. But probably the
only things I can complain about the game is the lack of additional heroines
and the heroines' lack of their own theme music (only Youko and Ikumi's
alternate self has one, even Shounen has one) but that is only just me
nitpicking. Knowing the personal computers' hardware limitations of that
era the original game was released also comes to mind.
In conclusion, I will just say that if you are a fan of Key, wanted to see/
play all of their works including the ones when they were still in Tactics,
and do not mind horror and rape, this game is sure worth to be experienced.

Seriously, though, they should've made a better one or I wouldn't be
bothered making it myself, in which I played the game only recently and
thus, the walkthrough I made is a LOT of years too late for some o_O .

Buy the game if it is available in your area.
Afterword: I know that anything posted on the Internet can be ripped off
and claimed as your own. So if you happen to have that agenda in mind,
please refrain from doing so, or at least leave my name on your credits
section, if you happened to have one. I do took the time and effort to
finish the game and writing the whole walkthrough for your benefit, you
know. And if you think I ripped it off from some blog or whatever,
everything here except from those at the credits section here came from my
head, and any similar thoughts out there are purely coincidental.
Thanks for reading!!
