This is a minimal walkthrough, intended to give very few spoilers. The game is
not linear, and you can do most things in any order, but I have tried to put
the information here in a deliberate progression so that you can read starting
from the top, and stop once you have enough information to proceed. These
instructions are given in text, rather than with a map, to avoid accidentally
showing too much at once.
Parts 2-7 of this guide can be completed in any order. If you find one is too
difficult, you can skip it and come back to it later.
Everything in this guide applies to all versions of this game.
NES, PC, Mac, Linux, DOS, etc.

| 1. General Notes and Hints |

* After pressing START on the title screen, before entering the door you can
go left to find a place to continue by password, and you can go further to
the right to find some instructions.
* Coins don't appear to do anything. Don't bother collecting these. The game
has passwords, but they do not save your collected coins.
* You can stand on penguins for a short time before they become angry.
* The small green frogs are harmless, but the horned blue frogs are very
dangerous. Do not touch the blue frogs. These creatures are scared of you
and will first jump away if you come near, but watch out because they may
panic and jump again.
* You start the game wearing the Lizard of Knowledge. This lizard can talk to
some animals, and may also see hints in some places. If you have this lizard
try pressing B whenever you see something new.
* The game world has two sides, Recto (day-time) and Verso (night-time). They
correspond directly to each other, but one is the mirror opposite of the
other, so travelling left on one side is the same as travelling right on the
other, and vice versa. From the start of the game, travel left, go past a
door, keep going until you reach a hole in the ground between the stone
blocks and the dirt. Go down into the hole, then travel right until you find
the map. Press UP while standing underneath the map to look closely at it.
There is a door in this room that goes to the other side of the world, where
you can look at its map as well. (This map is also in the game's manual.)
* There is a moose who offers several helpful tips. From the start of the
game, keep the Lizard of Knowledge and go to the right, over the top of the
cave entrance to the snowy mountain. Don't go into the caves, but climb up
instead. Next to a panda you will see a penguin. Jump on the penguin to
continue upward, and you will reach a save stone. From there go left, onto
some grey platforms. There is an ice block with a coin here. Jump straight
down off the end of that platform to find the moose. Press B to talk to it
repeatedly.
* After you complete a boss, the game will show an ending, but allow you to
continue. The passwords do not save completed bosses, you will have to
finish the game in one sitting on the NES. On the PC version there is an
automatic save and resume, but make sure you touch a save stone before you
close the game, otherwise the completed boss will not be saved.

| 2. Lizard of Swim vs. Octopus |

From the starting fall, go directly left, past the door, past the gap, and
across the ground floor of the forest. You will come to a wall with a hole in
the ground. Go down the hole and save, then go right one room where there is
another hole. From here fall straight down several rooms until you end up at
the bottom of this area. Just to the left you can find the Lizard of Swim.
Take this lizard and proceed to the right (ignore the door here) until you
find a save stone.
From the save, climb up the blocks until you reach a solid platform. Travel
right until you find water flowing down on the right side. Stand in the water
and rapidly press B to swim up it with your lizard. Hold right as you reach
the top of the flowing water, and enter the water area.
At the top of the water area, note that there is a grey door on the right side
of this room. You can enter this door to find the Lizard of Stone. You will
not need it yet, but remember that this is here. Swim two rooms down to reach
the bottom of the water area. There is a red door here, but do not enter it.
Proceed to the right along the bottom. You will pass a save stone, and then a
purple monolith with ? on it. Keep going and you will find another red door.
Do not enter this door, either. From here you can swim straight up to find the
path to the Octopus boss.
The room above the door is full of dangerous jellyfish. You can try to lure
them toward you by staying in one place for a while, and then swim around
them. Once past this difficult room, there is a coin and a fish on the right
(ignore them), and a passage upwards. Go up and you will find a save stone,
as well as a glowing portal. Press UP to enter the portal and reach the boss.
In the octopus' room, most of the floor is covered with forming eggs that you
cannot touch. There is a pile of eggs on the left that the octopus will pick
up and throw at you. Swim to the top while it is swimming low, then as it
rises up, quickly dive underneath. While underneath the octopus, try to keep
swimming to the right or left opposite its direction of travel so that it will
have less chance to hit you with an attack.
After all of the eggs are gone, the octopus will become sad and you can leave
this room to reach your first ending. Press B while standing next to the other
lizard to proceed.

| 3. Lizard of Heat vs. Rabbit |

From the starting fall, go left and immediately enter the door to the
night-time side of the world (Verso). From here go directly left, jump across
the column tops where there is a gap in the floor and keep going left.
Eventually you will reach an elevator. You can either ride the elevator or
jump straight down here. At the bottom, you can go right one room to find a
save stone on the other side of a small pool.
From the save stone, go left. Eventually there will be flowing lava. Keep
going until you see a hanging platform above a blue crab. This crab will jump
when you get near, but you can jump higher here. Jump up to the hanging
platform, then up and right to the room above. Here you can find the Lizard of
Heat.
After taking the Lizard of Heat, proceed back down carefully, and back to the
right. If a green spiky creature blocks your path, wait for it to move before
you continue. Go back to the elevator, and this time ride it all the way back
to the top. You can touch the save again before you go.
At the top of the elevator, go back to the right, and through the first door
you came in. Keep going to the right now. You can get past the panda by
jumping on its head. Go through the pond, past the purple monolith, and
finally you will reach the mouth of a cave. Do not go in the cave, instead
use the part of the ground that sticks up to jump on top of it. Keep going up
to find the snowy mountain.
Proceed up and to the right, and you will reach another cave. Don't enter this
cave, as it is full of dangerous blue frogs. Instead jump on the snowy
platforms to climb upward to the next room. Here on the right is yet another
cave, but do not enter it either. Keep going up. You will see a panda on the
left, and a penguin to its right. Jump on the penguin's head to give yourself
a boost to the next ledge, but do not stand too long on it or it will become
angry. There is a save stone here.
ROUTE 1: Go left and up from the save stone. Jump left onto the platform with
the penguin and a coin on a pole. Do not worry about touching the penguin, as
long as you don't stand on its head it will not harm you. Go left onto the
stone blocks to find some short elevators. Take them upward. Stand on the
penguin in the middle to reach the stone platform on the right, and proceed
right to the next room.
Here there are two penguins standing on poles. Your goal is to jump to the
second penguin, and then quickly jump again to reach the platform on the
right. Take a good run from the stone platform and jump quickly again once you
land on the penguin. You may fall here, but just return to this place and try
again. It may help to press and hold A before you land on the penguin, because
this will cause you to jump immediately when you land. Once on the far
platform, you will need to make two short hops onto the two penguins to get
over to the right. Keep going up and to the right from here.
ROUTE 2: from the save stone, go up one room, and instead of going left to the
penguins, go right into the cave. Inside is a long nosed enemy that throws a
ball of magic at you. Try to jump over the magic ball, and then stay still
when it swings back around toward you. After a jump or two you should be able
to get it to swing around you in a circle (this may take a few tries). Move
slowly and carefully toward the enemy and press B to use the heat power on it,
and the magic ball will fly away. (Do not touch the enemy with anything but
the heat power.) Keep going up and to the right inside the cave. In the next
room climb the hanging stone blocks, and be quick to avoid the bouncing purple
creature. Once at the top block with the coin, wait for the creature to move
out of the way and make a long jump to the left, and another jump onto the
purple monolith, then exit the cave. Outside the cave climb up and to the
right.
ALL ROUTES: You will now be at the same room, by either route. Directly
overhead on the left is an ice block which you need to melt with your heat
power. Just go to the right, past the door, and then back up to the left
across the platforms to reach it. Melt it and climb up. Here you'll find a
save stone and portal to the boss.
The boss is a rabbit that you must get to touch the fire 4 times. To
accomplish this, stand very close to the fire and wait for it to approach.
Once it prepares for its last jump to pounce on you, run toward it and go
underneath its leap. Run to the right edge of the room, and wait for it to
jump over you and go on top. When it's on top, avoid the falling icicles, and
then repeat the process once it comes back to the ground.
Easy Method: On the right side of this room is a little pair of two snowhills.
If you stand just to the left of them and hold B to use the heat power, the
rabbit will jump down and be stuned by the heat. Continue holding B until the
boss is stunned 4 times. (It may take a few tries to get the position
correct.)
Leave the boss room by the portal that appears, and press B next to the other
lizard for the next ending.

| 4. Lizard of Stone vs. Raccoons |

See part 2 and follow its directions to reach the Lizard of Stone. From there,
go straight down to the bottom of the water area again, but this time enter
the door. Use the save stone here.
ROUTE 1: See part 3, and follow its directions after going back up the
elevator. Proceed to the top of the mountain, but instead of going up to the
boss, one room below there was a door that you can enter. You may wish to
touch the save stone at the top of the snowy mountain before entering this
door.
ROUTE 2: Proceed all the way to the left, across the lava, and you'll reach
an area full of steam pipes. You can use your Lizard of Stone power by
pressing B to turn to stone, which makes you invincible to the steam or
electricity, or other hazards. There are a few ways to go through the steam
area, but as long as you focus on travelling upward you should eventually
reach the volcano.
At the top of the steam area you'll find lava dripping down from above, and a
short broken wooden bridge to your right. Just to the right of that bridge is
a save stone. After saving, climb back up past the falling lava, and keep
going upward. It is a long path up the volcano, but the stone power may help
you get past some of the enemies. Going up past a purple enemy with a magic
ball, then a pink armadillo above that, you'll find a room with a save stone
on the left past a shallow pool of water.
After saving keep going up. In the next room are some arrows that will shoot
at you when you cross their path. Press the B button to turn to stone, and
they will not harm you. Keep going up and you will reach a door. Do not enter
this door.
ALL ROUTES: After using route 1 to come through the door, or route 2 to climb
through the steam area and volcano, you will now be standing near that door,
close to the top of the volcano.
Proceed to the right, and use the stone platforms to continue upwards. Once
above, go to the left (toward the source of the lava). The purple enemy will
throw a magic ball at you. Hold B and the ball will pass through you, and you
can continue on to find the portal to the boss.
This boss consists of three raccoons that are spitting balls of lava at you
from above. As long as you are holding B, the lava will not hurt you. Stop the
raccoons by jumping on each of the 3 green valves, and standing on them until
they close. Be careful not to slip into the lava!
Enter the portal that opens, and press B near the oher lizard for the next
ending.

| 5. Lizard of Push vs. Frog |
+----------------------------+
See part 3 again and follow its directions to reach the save stone in the
middle of the mountain. This save stone is next to a cave. Go right into that
cave.
Inside this cave are three penguins on poles. Hold right to go as fast as you
can and make 3 quick jumps across these penguins to reach the door on the
right. Like the penguin jump in part 3, it may help to press and hold A early
to jump immediately when you land. Alternatively, if you bring the Lizard of
Heat you can melt the ice block on the right side of this cave to reach the
door.
Once through the door, you will find the Lizard of Push past a gap in the
floor. Do not go into the gap. Take the Lizard of Push, and hold B to push the
pink block to the left, which you can use to go back through the door you came
in.
After leaving the cave, go back down the snowy mountain, and to the left, past
the panda, returning to the starting area. Hit the save, keep going left and
enter the door.
On the other side (Verso), head left from the door until you reach the gap in
the floor with many columns. Fall straight down here from the edge, then go
right. You should be standing in the map room. Just to the right of the map
room is a long room with a dog. Wait for the dog to be facing away from you so
that you can safely jump over it and proceed to the right.
You will fall down into a place with many hedges. There is a save stone in the
bottom left of this area. Travel to the right along the bottom, then ascend
the red platforms. Keep going up, avoiding the owl, and leap across the gap to
the left. Keep going left, past the dog, until you can go up on more red
platforms to the next room.
On the next level, go left, climb up the edge, and then go right across the
top. Continue to the right, and down past the bouncing purple enemy. Keep
going past another purple monolith, then back around to a save stone.
From the save stone go left, hopping across the platforms, and keep going left
past the owl. Keep going left into the next room, and you'll see some stone
platforms again. One more room left and you will reach the information room
from the beginning of the game (next to the title screen). There is a pink
block here that you can push down to make a permanent shortcut. Do this, and
return to the right. (Above is a gate you cannot enter yet, but we will open
it shortly.)
Returning to the right, hop across the platforms above the owl this time, and
keep going right. Follow the path. If a blinking ghost appears, it will rush
at you a moment later, so try to get to a place where you have room to jump
out of the way. A little further and past another dog, you will reach the
bottom of the palace.
Jump up onto the hanging stone blocks, and travel to the left where you fill
find a gate, a switch, and a pink block. Push the pink block to open the gate
permanently. (We will use these shortcuts in part 6.) Now proceed to the
right, and you'll find a save stone.
Continue travelling upward through the palace. You will pass a pink block
hanging from a rope, a door you can't reach, etc. but keep going until you
reach a save stone next to another door.
ROUTE 1: If you go through the door, you can follow a fairly linear path that
eventually leads to another door that re-enters the palace at the top. After
entering this door, you must first proceed to the left, and you will reach a
wall and a pink block. Remember this place for the next part, because if you
fall straight down from the platform with the pink block on it, you will reach
the Lizard of Surf. Otherwise, continue to the top and enter the door.
ROUTE 2: Instead of entering the door, go up and to the right from the save
stone. Continue up, and go right. Ignore another hanging pink block and keep
going up and right. You'll see a few green frogs here. Go left now. In the
next room you will need to make a jump across a wide gap to the left. Be
careful of a ghost that appears here, wait for it to rush at you once and then
jump across while it's safe, between appearances.
After making the wide jump, you will need to keep going up. To get past the
crabs, know that if you stand still in front of one, it will jump before it
touches you, giving you one chance to escape from it. Jump to its platform,
and stop (pressing DOWN may help) and as soon as the crab jumps in front of
you, run to make the next jump. This is a difficult room, especially with the
ghost reappearing. On the next room above there is a door to the left, which
is where route 1 will exit. Go to the right instead.
ALL ROUTES: You are at the top level of the palace now. Continue to the right
to find another save point and portal to the boss.
The boss is a long tower filled with platforms, with a giant frog chasing from
below. There is a fly buzzing around the top, which will follow you
horizontally, even though it remains at the top. Just keep hopping from
platform to platform, and try to stay low on the screen so the fly doesn't
come too close. If you find it hard to land on the platforms, try holding DOWN
in midair to slow yourself and make a sharper landing.
The frog will shoot magic from its eyes. This can be avoided similar to the
ghost. When the magic appears, wait for it to come at you and dodge before you
resume jumping across the platforms. Occasionally a pink block will appear
which you can hold B to push off the platform. If it lands in the frog's eye
it will close, preventing the magic attack.
Eventually the fly's eyes will turn red, signalling that it is about to
descend toward the frog's mouth. Try not to get in between the two. Wait for
the fly to start coming down, then dash across to the right to get out of its
way before it does.
A portal will appear, hold B and push the other lizard for an ending.

| 6. Lizard of Surf vs. Snake |

ROUTE 1: Using the shortcuts you unlocked in part 5, don't enter the door from
the title screen this time. Instead go right, and use the pink block to jump
up and continue to the right. Keep going up and to the right, and through the
palace gate. Continue to the second palace save stone, and go through the
door then all the way to the left, where there's a platform with a pink block
on it. Drop straight down from that platform to find the Lizard of Surf.
ROUTE 2: Without the shortcuts, this lizard is more difficult to reach. You
can go left from the start to the forest. There are notches on the tree trunks
that you can jump on to climb up into the trees. Go left and upward into the
trees until you reach a save stone.
After the save stone is a very difficult series of platforms with a pair of
owls guarding the way. Holding DOWN while in midair may make it easier to land
on the narrow platforms (it helps you slow down more quickly and land
sharply). Also, you can stand on the top of an owl's head if you are careful.
Past that room, go up, and then left to find a room with many white birds and
a purple monolith. Jump on top of the monolith, then leap to the left into the
next room, where the Lizard of Surf awaits. (With the Lizard of Knowledge, you
can hold B next to the monolith to see a little hint arrow pointing this way.)
ALL ROUTES: Now that you have the Lizard of Surf, drop down to ground level
and proceed all the way to the right. You can hold B to use the surf board to
skip across the surface of the water. Try this out as you pass the pond this
time. Go into the mouth of the cave, and keep going all the way through to the
right. There is a save stone at the end next to some rushing water.
Hold B and jump into the rushing water to enter the river area. On the river
you can press A to jump, and otherwise must avoid many obstacles that will
come at you.
At the end of the river a snake appears. It will come toward you in loops,
then it will stick its head out on the left side. When it does this an arrow
will appear in front of you. Use this arrow to aim a barrel that will be
coming down the river, to try and hit the snake in its head. This is tricky to
aim. (Also do not let the barrel hit you. Jump over it or dodge out of the way
once it appears.) After this it will travel in loops to the right side and
throw a few waves. You can jump or dodge the waves, and then the cycle will
repeat. 4 barrel hits will end it.
Try to stay on the left while the snake is on the right, and vice versa. It's
easiest to aim the barrel if you stay in the centre of the screen before the
snake's head pops up.
At the end of the river, press B next to the other lizard for another ending.

| 7. Lizard of Bounce vs. Cat |

From the start, go to the right, past the panda and the pond, into the cave.
Jump over the first big gap in the cave floor, but in the room after that you
will find 3 holes in the floor. Fall into one of those to find the Lizard of
Bounce.
The Lizard of Bounce is tricky to use. When you hold B, you can't jump any
more, but if you fall onto the ground while holding it, you will bounce. You
can't bounce higher than you started, but if you jump from a higher place to a
low ground, you can bounce higher than you would have jumped from that ground.
You can practice this by getting the coin just to the right of the Lizard of
Bounce.
Climb out of this room on the left, then go one room left and down into the
hole in the floor there. This will lead to the water area. Continue straight
down and use the save stone here. Proceed all the way to the left along the
bottom, and enter the red door when you reach it. There will be a save stone
on the other side.
Now proceed to the right. The crab here is difficult to jump over, but if you
stand still and wait for it to come to you, it will always jump before it
touches you, and you can run underneath. Just past the crab you will reach a
save stone next to a cliff. Walk off the cliff!
This place you have entered is weird. The space wraps on itself in a strange
way. Maybe the most straightforward path through this place is to keep going
to the right as much as you can. If you fall, you may get lost, so be careful.
About halfway through, you will find a floating brown dragon. You can stand on
its back, it will not hurt you. Two rooms to the right of the dragon is a save
stone. A few more rooms to the right and you will end up at a purple monolith.
From the purple monolith you can't go any further to the right. Instead, go
left and down one room, then start going left. Jump on a penguin to cross a
gap, then cross a bridge, and eventually you reach the other side of the same
purple monolith. From here you can go one room to the right and down through a
gap in the bridge. This will put you on the "lowest" level of this area (if
you can call it that), and a few rooms directly to the right is the entrance
to the boss area.
To reach the boss, you will need to make a series of bounces with the Lizard
of Bounce. In the rooms on this level, there is sort of an upper path and a
lower path. All the way on the left you can jump up to the upper path, but
proceeding right from there you will have to bounce across to stay on the
upper path. In the third room you will notice a door, do not enter it, this
connects near to where the Lizard of Swim was found, just keep bouncing
across. In each room, hold right and jump, then hold B to bounce, and try to
get to the upper platform on the right to keep going. Be careful of the dogs,
wait for them to face away from you. Eventually you will see a little purple
platform on some stone blocks, you can simply hold right to walk off your
ledge and fall onto the stone blocks. Just to the right of this is the
entrance to the boss, and a save stone.
As an alternative way to get around this place, you can fall straight down.
Each level down seems to represent several rooms to the right. If you know
what room you want to get to, falling down might be the fastest way to find
it. The safest way to fall is in a gap a little bit inward from the left side
of most rooms, where you can keep falling a long ways without hitting
anything. Maybe a simpler way to get to the bottom level would be to enter
from the door near the Lizard of Swim (and there's a save stone nearby on the
other side of that door), which would bypass most of this place.
In the boss room you will be stuck on two platforms. If you fall, you will
wrap around to the ceiling, and similarly with going left and right. The boss
will shoot smiles at you, or sometimes change the platforms around. Wait for
it to stick its nose in the air, and then try to bounce on it, and if you're
lucky you can land on the other platform too. You don't have to bounce, but it
helps keep you safe, as dangerous stars will begin appearing each time you
bounce on the cat. After 5 hits it will give up.
Press B next to the other lizard for another ending.

| 8. Final Boss |

To reach the final boss, first complete the other 6 bosses (parts 2-7 above).
The entrance to the final boss will appear above a stone lizard statue. There
is one of these on each side of the world, you can use either to enter. It is
one level below either map room, then one room to the right or left.
Recto: From the start, go left until you reach the gap in the ground between
the stone and the dirt. Go down one room, then fall down the small gap in
the middle of that room.
Verso: From the start, go left and enter the door, then go left until you
reach the gap with columns in it. Go down two rooms from here, then two
rooms to the right.
The final boss consists of jumping between platforms as they alternately
become safe or covered in flames. If this is very difficult you might try the
Lizard of Stone here. Eventually the sequence will complete and you can end
the game.
