1. Introduction
===============================================================================

Les Manley: Lost in L.A. was released in 1992, by Accolade.  Admittedly, horny
adolescent that I was back then, I selected this game mainly for the "adult"
appeal.  While it certainly didn't hold up to any of the better adventure games
out there, it was still good for a few laughs.  Although this game might be
hard to find nowadays, I'm having fun dusting off my old games, and hope that
this can be of some use to anyone else who is doing the same.  Have fun!

===============================================================================
2. Frequently Asked Questions
===============================================================================

Q: What kind of game is Les Manley: Lost in L.A.?

A: It's a point-and-click adventure game.  Basically, you move ("point") the
cursor around the screen, and it changes whenever an action can be
performed, in which case, you "click."  Doing that, and using a combination
of inventory items you obtain over the course of the game, you solve puzzles
  that move your adventure along.

---
Q: Is there any nudity in this game?

A: Well, yes and no.  In the opening sequence, for instance, one of the
characters goes for a skinny dip.  While she covers herself up with her
arms, the graphics are pretty dated and pixelized - feel free to imagine
that you can see some nippleage if you like.

3. Walkthrough
===============================================================================

Even in the opulent mansions of the Hollywood elite, noone is safe: left and
right, celebrities are vanishing without a trace.  At one such home, Helmut
Bean, the "World's Smallest Man," and his girlfriend, LaFonda Turner, have just
finished working up a sweat.  While Bean makes a call to his good friend (and
star of the game) Les Manley, LaFonda decides to cool off by skinny-dipping in
the pool.  Little does she know that a mysterious figure is lurking in the
shadows, and that she and Bean are about to join the list of missing stars.

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

This is where Les comes in.  Before he was nabbed, Bean had asked Les to meet
him at the Pit to catch up on things.  As you look around, you'll see only a
few things of interest.  Unfortunately, even those aren't very interesting.
Go ahead and "look closely" at the trashcan, but it doesn't provide any clues.
The large guy sitting at Surf Dogs has his mouth too full with sausage meat to
provide any info, so try checking out the two female bodybuilders.

Clicking the question mark on the one in orange brings up a close-up view, in
which you can initiate some dialogue with another click.  The first option,
"Excuse me, girls. Is this the Pit?" only results in Cristy and Misty poking
fun at your muscles (or lack thereof).  The second, "I'm looking for Helmut
Bean," is a little more productive.  The girls aren't quite sure whether they
should trust you or not, so you need to find a friend of theirs as a reference.

Walk left to the next screen.  Click on the Newsbox, and try to Open it.  You
won't, but the game will inform you that an issue of the Popular Eclipse is
right up against the window.  Go ahead and Read it, and you'll discover that
the first total solar eclipse in 137 years is going to occur today.  Noone here
provides any information, so walk left once again.

You should be on the beach, now.  Go ahead and try to talk to the girl tanning.
The first option is "Can I ask you a couple of questions?", to which she
replies that you should try asking Lance, the lifeguard.  The second option,
"Those wrinkles will get even deeper if you continue to tan," only gets her
angry.  However, note that she mentions her plastic surgeon, Dr. Nick; keep
that name in mind.

You should see Lance right next to the surfboards - click on him.  Fortunately,
he is very willing to talk.  Sadly, the beach is pretty deserted today, which
Lance attributes to the rash of disappearances.  By asking the third dialogue
option, "What do you know about Helmut Bean?", you discover that your little
buddy had quite a few enemies.  Continue with the conversation, and Lance will
tell you to go tell Cristy and Misty that you're a friend.  You're not quite
finished with Lance yet, however.  Talk to him again, and choose "Maybe the
eclipse is keeping people home today."  After the game zooms in to an overhead
view, click on Lance's bandanna, and take it.

Head right two screens, back to where you first started.  Now that you're a
"major bud" of Lance, the girls are very willing to talk.  By choosing the
first option, "So...you knew Helmut pretty well?", you find out that he had
had a fling with Maladonna, the music video star.  Ask about Maladonna again,
and you'll find out quite a bit more info.  To sum up, the Pawn Emporium guy
is obsessed with LaFonda, Maladonna is shooting a video at Paramounds Studio,
even though she doesn't get along with Abe Goldstein, the head of the studio.

Now, ask "What do you think happened to Helmut?"  You'll discover that the
investigation is under pretty tight wraps, but the girls send you over to talk
to Rock, a traffic cop working Hollywood Boulevard.  Head to the right, and
you'll pull out your map.

-Cutscene-
LaFonda is strapped down, underneath a vat of some boiling substance, while
the kidnapper looks on.  Apparently, he is planning on making her, Helmut,
and the rest of the celebrities part of his "collection."

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

Once the map comes back up, click on Hollywood Boulevard.  You'll find Les in
the middle of the street, with a cop nearby.  This isn't the one you're looking
for, however, so walk left to the next screen.  In the middle of the four-way
intersection, you'll see Rock directing traffic (even though there's none to
be found).  Walk over and talk to him.

Choose the third option, "Is your name Rock?"  Now that he knows you're a
friend of Cristy and Misty, he's more willing to talk.  Ask about any police
leads, and you'll discover that any information is stored in the LAPD database,
which is near impossible to get access to.  Say "I think I can get in," and
you'll find out that you need a password and a computer.

To the left of Rock is an elderly looking couple.  Walk over and ask them "Have
you heard about the disappearances?"  They'll ask if you're someone famous, and
if you answer that you are, you'll see some references to some old adventureg
games (brings back good memories for me!).  The answer that gets you somewhere,
however, is "Shucks, no."  Once Eb and Clora find out that you're a friend of
Helmut Bean, however, they'll ask for your autograph.  Give it to them, and
they will reward you with a spare map of L.A.

Walk down one screen, and you should find yourself in front of Lou's Pawn
Emporium.  The only problem is, a rap group called "The Boyz" is blocking the
entrance.  Talk to them, and ask them if they will let you in.  They won't
quite just yet, but you'll find out you need some "color," some type of
"symbol."  Then, ask about the disappearances, and again a second time, only
more specifically.  Finally, say "Yo!  I'm looking for my homeboy, the
Beanster," then agree to rhyme along.  Say "I need a modem," and then ask about
Helmut, to discover that a white limousine was seen getting away from his
house.  You can also ask about Lou, to find out he collects pictures of
LaFonda, but you already knew that.

Head up one screen, then right, then right again.  You'll notice a guy standing
alone on one of the corners.  Introduce yourself, and you'll find out that he
is waiting for a call (even though there's no phone in sight).  Follow up by
asking about the disappearances, and you will find out that Blade is pretty
knowledgeable when it comes to computer security.  That's about all you can do
with him, for now, so walk into the hotel.  Keep in mind, however, that you'll
need his help breaking into the LAPD database.

Ask Murry "Do you know the kid across the street?"  You'll find out that Blade
is actually called "Peacechild."  If you comment on the hotel, you'll discover
that it offers free phone service; unfortunately, Murry doesn't take credit
cards, so you'll have to find another way to pay.  Now, ask "What's your take
on the celebrity disappearances?"  Respond with either choice, and then leave.
You'll notice something under Murry's hand just as you leave.

Walk back in, and ask him what it was.  You'll find out that it was a free pass
to Club Mud - ask him if you can have it.  Of course, he isn't about to hand it
over so easily, so agree to do a favor for him.  He'll give you a roll of film,
which you're supposed to go develop, that he found in one of the rooms, as well
as the pass.

After you leave, look at the film, and you'll notice it hasn't been used.  Now,
go talk to Blade again, and say "Peacechild! How are you?"  He'll get a little
embarrased, and when he asks you not to mention his name to anyone else, answer
with "No, I'll never breathe a word."  Now, ask him if he's seen anything out
of the ordinary, and he'll mention a lady in a white limo (!) who was wearing
Maladonna's brand of perfume.  Ask him for some advice, and he'll mention that
the Boyz are just that, boys - threaten them, and they'll cave in.

Go left one screen, and then left again.  You'll see a shop called "Star
Photos" - remember what Lou is interested in?  Enter the shop, and ask about
the celebrity disappearnces.  She'll say that she thinks Abe Goldstein is the
person behind it all.  If you try to get your picture taken with a star, you'll
find out that the camera is out of film.  Leave, and then walk back in.  Give
the film cartridge that you got from Murry to Rainbow, and choose who you want
to get your picture taken with.  Lou's a big fan of LaFonda, remember?

Go down one screen and give the Boyz the red bandanna - they'll change their
tune and let you in.  Enter Lou's Pawn Emporium, and you'll note that Lou has
a computer in the back.  Talk to him, and tell him that you're interested in
it.  You'll find out that it doesn't work, but we'll worry about that later.
Ask if you can give something in exchange, and when he agrees, give him the
photo of you and LaFonda.

Before you exit, Lou mentions that a show at Club Mud, starring Monique and
Dominique, will be starting soon.  Don't be in such a rush to get over there
quite yet, however.  In fact, if you go straight there, you'll reach a dead
end in the game, and have to reload.  Rather bad game design, but oh well.
From Lou's Pawn Emporium, head left, and the map will come up.

Click on Rodeo Drive, and after you get there, walk towards the tree on the
right, with the pigeon in it.  Once you get close enough, you'll startle the
bird, and as a result, it'll leave a little present on the nearby sports car.
Click on it, and you'll discover that it has "remarkable elasticity" - hmm,
sounds like something that might be useful.  You can't pick it up with your
fingers, nor would you want to, so use your Big K credit card to scrape it off.
Now, head left, and your map should pull up once again.

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
= Sunset and Vine =~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

Walk over to Sunset and Vine, and then right one screen.  You should see a guy
leaning against the wall - go up and talk to him, and you'll find out that he
sells an assortment of electronics, including cell phones. He doesn't take
credit cards, but as you're ending the conversation, he'll mention that he
doesn't really know his way around L.A.  Is there anything you have that might
help him out a bit?

Yup, your spare map.  Give it to him, and he'll agree to give you the cellular
phone.  Head right one screen to pull up your map, and then walk back over to
Hollywood Boulevard.

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
= Hollywood Boulevard =~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

Walk right one screen, and give the cell phone to Brad.  Ask him to help get
you the password to the LAPD database, and he'll make a call.  Unfortunately,
they won't give him the complete password, but if you were paying attention,
you'll note the password starts with "El," not "L."

Walk down one screen, and talk to the bouncer.  It's normally $25 to get in,
but luckily, you have the free pass from Murry.  Give it to Bob, and you'll
wake up the next morning, with a nice-looking girl on either side of you.
Initiate a dialogue with either Monique or Dominique, and after a little bit
of "dirty" talk, you can ask them to recount what happened the previous night.

-Cutscene-
You'll see that Les got down and dirty in a mud wrestling match.  You won't
see much, except for an animated cloud with various body parts sticking out
of it.  Oh, and a couple of shots of the bikini-clad girls in different
positions on top of you.  By the way, you won't be able to see these again
unless you restore a saved game, so save before this if you're a horny
little pervert and want to watch this over and over.

Back in the hotel room, start a conversation once again.  Tell them that you
need to find a phone jack, and you'll discover that there is one in the room.
Then, when they ask if you need anything else, respond with "Well...there is
ONE thing."  They'll place a DOS disk on top of the blanket - pick it up, and
you automatically move to the computer.

Click on the computer, and select "Boot."  Once it has booted up, click on the
computer again and select "Hack."  Scroll down the list of available passwords,
and you'll see that all of them start with "L," except for "Elvis."  Choose
that one, and you'll successfully access the LAPD database.

You'll obtain quite a few leads, some of which you may have already heard, if
you were paying attention during conversations:

  -Eyewitness Reports-
    * two lurking figures at the scene of the crime
    * mysterious white limousine

  -Physical Evidence-
    * two sets of footprints at the Bean mansion
    * shreds of silver duct tape
    * fence cut with wire cutters
    * traces of Totally Heinous perfume
    * strands of long hair

So far, the evidence seems to point to Maladonna (including the fact that she
was recently dumped by Helmut), and Abe Goldstein:

  -Maladonna-
    * history of insane jealousy (once tried to impale ex-lover with conical
      brassiere)
    * recently endorsed Totally Heinous perfume
    * sometimes seen in company of two dance partners (Boy and Toy)
    * always travels in white limo

  -Abe Goldstein-
    * head of Paramounds Studios
    * ruthlessly destroys rivals
    * feuding with stars over contracts
    * owns fleet of white limos

So, one of the suspects is currently shooting a video at Paramounds Studios,
while the other runs it - obviously, you know where to go next.  Head off the
screen to the right to pull up your map, then walk to the studio.

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

Talk to Dave, the security guard, and choose either of the first two options,
telling him you need to see either Abe or Maladonna.  When he responds that
you can't really see either of them without a reason, answer "You really want
a REASON?"  This will get you in, but first, you'll have to get past the game's
copy protection, using the provided code wheel.

Enter the second hangar from the right, and you'll find yourself on the set of
a horror film, complete with creepy music.  You should see a rowboat right in
front of you - look at it closely.  Upon closer observation, you'll note that
there is a small, but significant, hole.  Check your inventory; are there any
objects in there that looks like it could patch that right up?  Yup, the crap
from the pigeon.

Once you've fixed the boat, climb in, and you'll automatically make your way
across the lake to the Camp Blood cabin.  Ignore the creepy shadow in the
window, and try to open the door - you'll then see Jason Meyers burst out of
it, axe in hand.  Talk to him, and a list of options will come up.  Go ahead
and click on any of them, but the last one, "Freddy's scarier," is the one that
ends the conversation.

Once the director cuts the action, pick up the axe.  So, how do you get out of
here?  Remember where the director popped out of?  Click there (on the sign
for Camp Blood) and open the stage door, then go through.

-Cutscene-
You've finally made it to Maladonna's video shoot!  While she gyrates and
grabs her crotch onstage, you swing by to try and confront her.  Although
Les isn't able to get any answers, some nearby talent scouts decide that
he is the next big star...if only he had an agent.

Once the cutscene is over, head to Sunset and Vine.  Go through the nearby door
into Tony Leoni's office.  Introduce yourself and say that you need an agent.
Tony is a little apprehensive about setting a meeting between you and Abe up,
so say "apparently, you don't realize who I am."  Tony says you'll first need
a portfolio before you can even hope of meeting with a producer - luckily,
there's a photographer nearby.

Once you've exited Tony's office, walk right one screen and enter Luther Blue
Studios.  Introduce yourself to Luther (is that Jon Lovitz?!).  He's willing
to photograph you, but only after you fix up that ugly mug of yours.  Remember
what that tanning girl on the beach said?  She mentioned a "Dr. Nick," but
where to find him?  Well, what better place to have a plastic surgery boutique
than right next door to the designer shops rich women frequent?  Walk over to
Rodeo Drive.

Across the street from the red sports car you saw earlier is Les Plastique, the
offices of Dr. Nikopoulas.  Go ahead and enter, and talk to him.  If you ask
if he's really done the work on all those stars, he'll mention Maladonna, and
that all the missing celebrities are either rivals or ex-lovers.  Tell him
that Luther suggested that you need a new look, and Dr. Nick will go over the
available options.  Unfortunately, you can't afford any of them, so he gives
you a loaner wax nose to try out.  Head back to Sunset and Vine.

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

Go right one screen and back into Luther Blue Studios.  With your new nose,
Luther takes your photos free of charge, hoping that he'll get a cut of the
action after you make it big.  Now, with your new portfolio, all you need is
a new wardrobe.  Stop by Tony's office again, and he'll set up a power lunch
for you, as well as recommend you stop by Rodeo Drive for some clothes.  Do so.

Walk right one screen, and enter Les Boutique.  Talk to the saleswoman, and
tell her that you'll just have a look around.  Walk to the far right, and you
will see Maladonna enter the store, to pick up her outfit for a party that Dr.
Nick is having.  You also hear her proclaim that she will be getting revenge
on Abe Goldstein tonight!  Les then decides to hurry over to his lunch with
Abe.

Abe is accompanied by two blondes with glazed-over eyes - eh, I guess that's
not so strange.  (Just kidding)  They're still kind of creepy looking, though;
Deena and Geena are their names.  Anyways, talk to Abe, and you'll question
him about Helmut, and have a brief flashback.

-Cutscene-
Les recalls the good, old, pre-VGA days, in which he met Helmut in the first
Les Manley game, "Search for the King."

Abe cuts your story off, and offers you a movie deal!  Don't accept his offer,
however, as the fame goes straight to your head and ends the game.  Instead,
being the loyal friend you are, say that you're not quite sure.  As a result,
Abe invites you to the Nikopoulas party, to try to get to know everyone better.

At the party, you'll be in the top right corner.  Click on yourself, and the
screen will zoom up to you, Maladonna, and Abe.  You'll then confront them with
the evidence you've gained so far.  Click on the various options, and soon, Abe
and Maladonna start pointing fingers at each other.  A little while later, you
will see Maladonna talking to the Geena and Deena - Les will assume that they
are working for Maladonna, and stalking Abe Goldstein.  That's not quite the
case, however, as they soon kidnap her as well!  You then follow them to the
Wax Museum.

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
= Wax Museum  =~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

The doors are boarded shut, but that shouldn't be a problem - remember what
Jason did?  Chop through with your axe.  Once you're in the museum, go ahead
and take a look around at the various statues, just for fun.  Pay particular
attention to the Conan the Barbarian statue, with the sword.  Unfortunately,
the sword is too firmly attached at this moment.  Walk right one screen.

There's a sarcophagus here, but don't open it just yet.  Walk right another
screen.  Off to the right, you'll see statues of Maladonna, LaFonda, and your
buddy, Helmut!  You're a sicko, so take advantage of this opportunity to feel
LaFonda or Maladonna up (use your Hand icon).  A little wax should come loose
in your hand.  Don't take a closer look at Helmut, however!  Instead, pick up
the torch on the wall.  Walk back to the left two screens - can you think of
anything that might loosen Conan's grip?

Right, use the torch to melt his hand, and you'll automatically take the sword.
Walk back over to Helmut's statue.  Here, you'll find another example of poor
game design...you could get stuck for quite a while, by not doing something
you'd really expect to do.  Luckily, I'm here to help.  Drop the sword!  Kind
of a strange thing to do, but trust me.  Now, use the torch on Helmut's statue.

Uh oh...Geena and Deena appear behind you, and you end up strapped down.  Well,
at least you find out who's behind this all: it's Abe Goldstein!  Wait, it's
Tony Leoni!  No, it's Dr. Nick!  Oops, it's MAD WAX!  Nope, all four of them
are the one and the same - Tony finds the talent, Dr. Nick fixes them up, Abe
makes them into a star, and Mad Wax turns them into statues!  Looks like Les
is done for...

Fortunately, you left the torch by Helmut, melting the wax right off him.
Conveniently, Les left his sword behind, so pick that up, as well as the torch.
Look a little closer at the display stand that Helmut was just on.  It's now
splattered with melted wax, which you can pry off with the sword.

You might have noticed the Alien statue before, as Les.  Taking a look at it,
you discover the drool looks pretty real, and if you've seen any of the Alien
movies, you know it's pretty acidic.  Sounds useful, but you need something to
keep it in.  Look through your items: that white wax you just collected resists
corrosion!  Use it on the statue to collect some drool.

Walk left one screen, and then another.  Using the sword, cut off Tarzan's
loincloth.  Now, walk right one screen, and try to open the sarcophagus I told
you to ignore earlier.  You need something long and hard to use as a lever, and
the sword seems to fit the bill perfectly - use it.

You'll see Les and the madman far below you: too far to jump, with not enough
time to use the stairs.  "Use" your loin cloth to form a parachute, and then
"drop" it to float on down.  Helmut will land on top of the straps restraining
Les, while Mad Wax is fortunately still giving us his evil look.  Once again
looking through your inventory, look for something that might free Les - yup,
your acid should melt right through the straps.

Les is freed, but Mad Wax grabs Helmut and runs up the stairs!  Geena and
Deena, the two killer zombie bimbos, block your way and try to eat you.  Most
of your stuff doesn't seem to work on them - but hey, what do most women LOVE
to do?  Shop...so whip out your Big K credit card, and they melt.

The game will cut to a view of Mad Wax, Helmut, and a large bell.  There should
be a trapdoor right near Mad Wax, which you're under.  Click on it to climb up,
and Mad Wax threatens to throw Helmut over the edge.  Offer to cut a deal with
him, but it doesn't accomplish much.  Try whipping out your Big K credit card
again (hey, it worked on the zombies), and Mad Wax will respond by pulling out
a gun.

Click on the ropes that ring the bell, and Helmut will take a bite out of Mad
Wax's hand.  Helmut is then thrown into the air - use this moment to quickly
put the droplets of wax in your ear, before the bell deafens you all.  Mad Wax
should drop his revolver to cover his ears, so try and pick it up.  Although
Les doesn't pick it up, Helmut will come flying in on a bat and position
himself on all fours behind Mad Wax.  Now, use your Hand icon to push him over
the edge...congratulations, you've finished Les Manley: Lost in L.A.!

4. Items
===============================================================================

-Axe-
Perfect for chopping through just about anything.  Obtained from Camp Blood,
in Paramounds Studios, after talking to Jason Meyers.

-Big K Credit Card-
People in Hollywood wouldn't be caught dead with this particular card.  Les
never leaves home without it.  You start the game with this.

-Cellular phone-
Perfect for those anticipated phone calls.  Obtained from the entrepreneur
near Sunset and Vine, in exchange for the spare map.

-Conan's sword-
A long hard blade with a razor sharp edge.  Obtained in the wax museum, by
melting the statue's hand with the torch.

-Cup o' drool-
Highly corrosive.  Do not put in contact with anything (unless, of course,
you want it to dissolve!)  Obtained in the wax museum by Helmut, by using
the white wax on the Alien statue.

-DOS Disk-
3 1/2 inches of pure power.  Something Les is familiar with.  Obtained from
Dominique and Monique after the night at Club Mud.

-Droplets of wax-
Kind of like the stuff Les usually finds in his ears.  Obtained from the
wax museum, by using the Hand icon on certain statues.

-Film Cartridge-
Murry doesn't realize it, but this cartridge film hasn't been used.  This is
obtained from Murry, when you agree to do a favor for him.

-Flaming torch-
A hot item to have around.  Found in the wax museum, near the statues of
  Maladonna, LaFonda, and Helmut.
