Kanon Menu Translation FAQ (PC)

2005-09-14: v0.3 (probably going to be the final release for a while.)

by hikaritenchi

email: my email provider is hotmail, you should be able to figure out what to
put after the @ sign.  The more important part of my email is
~sailorcloud3000~, without the tildes of course.  This is to prevent my
inbox from getting spammed with even more junk mail.  Thanks!

Kanon.0 :: Introduction
--------------------------------------------------------

This is not a translation of the game, nor does it help you play it in any way.
It only attempts to pass what I've learned by fiddling around with the options
and from other free sources on the internet.  Maybe later on I'll add a paths
FAQ if the demand is high enough.

Click the mouse to advance the text, and to skip already viewed video
sequences.  Pressing the control key will allow you to skip even unviewed text.
Also, this FAQ is written for the Windows version, if you happen to have a port
to Mac or Linux, I can't really help all that much.

For more information on Kanon, check out KTajii's FAQ/Walkthrough for the
Dreamcast version, also available at gamefaqs.com.

--------------------------------------------------------
Kanon.1 :: Notes
--------------------------------------------------------

It is my experience that you can play the game with the CD in, however, the
game will periodically pop up an annoying "CD not found" dialog box. You may
also start the game without the CD's autorun feature.  Just open the only .exe
file in the Kanon folder, and you should be all set.  I installed the game
while running in XP's Japanese Unicode mode.  Everything worked fine, but I'm
not sure if other users running in the English unicode mode will run into
problems or not.

It has come to my attention that there are voice patches and a translation
patch for this game.  More information is available by searching
http://forums.haeleth.net.  The full URL doesn't fit within 80 characters, so
it will not be reproduced here.

I have to give a special thanks for Haeleth of haeleth.net for graciously
allowing me to borrow his translation of the configuration menu.

--------------------------------------------------------
Kanon.2 :: Special Note:  "Standard Edition" vs Original
--------------------------------------------------------

Final note: There are two versions of this game, as well as two umm...other
versions.  Here's what I mean.  The original game had some 'adult' scenes, but
Key released another version, the 'all-ages' version.  To my knowledge, the
adult scenes were taken out, and the story modified slightly.  The adult
version was released in 1999, and the all ages version coming out in 2000.
This menu translation expressly deals with those two versions, released on CD.
The new versions, called "Standard Edition" of both games were released in
2004 and 2005, respectively, on DVD.  The menus on the "Standard Edition"
differ in the following ways:

Omake doesn't appear on the main menu until it is actually available.
Configuration only allows you to change the main character's name.

--------------------------------------------------------
Kanon.3 :: When you first put the CD in
--------------------------------------------------------

When you first put the CD in, it should start up automatically.  If your
autorun feature is disabled for whatever reason, you can open the file
"X:\SETUPCD.EXE" where X:\ is the drive you put your CD in.

--------------------

Click the far right button to install the game.  It'll default install to
C:\Kanon.  Clicking the button directly underneath that text box will allow you
to change the install directory.  The first drop-down will allow you to choose
which drive you want it installed on, then double-clicking a folder in the
lower text box will install Kanon into the
C:\*whatever you double-clicked*\Kanon folder.
Note that the install directory must end in Kanon.

After choosing which directory to install into, clicking the left button will
install, and the right button will cancel.

After installing, click the middle button to actually start the game.
Clicking the left button after installation allows you to uninstall the game.
Again, with the left button uninstalling, and the right button cancelling.

--------------------------------------------------------
Kanon.4 :: Opening screen
--------------------------------------------------------

Hopefully you'll be able to get to the opening screen.  It has "Kanon" at the
top, with a few choices below.

Kanon

Start new game
Load saved game
Configuration
Omake (Initially unselectable)
Exit

I'll only go into Configuration, since I'm sure the others are dead obvious.

The first option probably allows you to change your character's name, but I
haven't been able to do so.  It probably only accepts Japanese characters, and
I don't have a Japanese input option available to me.

The second option will show/hide the date at the upper left corner during
gameplay.

The third switches between "pretty" (on the left side) and "simple" (on the
right).  Change it to simple if your computer lags while playing Kanon.

The fourth option will open up a small menu.

----------------------------------
Open sound options
Fullscreen/Windowed >> Fullscreen
                      Windowed
Color Balance
Text box type >> Type 1
                Type 2
                Type 3
                Type 4
Text speed
Text style
Exit Game >> NO
            YES
Exit menu
----------------------------------

Selecting sound options is the same as the one in "Control Panel"

Selecting color balance will allow you to change the tint of the text box.
Checking the check mark box makes it opaque, as you can see in the preview box
underneath the color sliders.

Selecting text speed will open a window with a slider.  The further to the
left the slider is, the faster the text will scroll.  You can see this effect
in the small preview box underneath the slider.

Selecting text style will allow you to choose between (on my machine) two
different Japanese fonts.  It defaults to the 2nd choice, which is 'softer'.
Choose either style, according to your tastes.  The check mark on the right
will lock in the default text size for your chosen font.  The slider will
change the text size for your chosen font.  Press the button on the left to
change back to default.  The button on the right will accept your changes.

--------------------------------------------------------
Kanon.5 :: During the game
--------------------------------------------------------

When you start a new game, it'll start out with a snowy, cloudy sky.  Right
clicking will bring up another menu.  The first option will most likely be
greyed (grayed) out.  As you advance in the story, that option will fast
forward through sections you've already read.

------------------
Fast Forward
------------------
Hide the text box
------------------
SAVE >>
LOAD >>
Open sound options
Fullscreen/Windowed >> Fullscreen
                      Windowed
Color Balance
Text box type >> Type 1
                Type 2
                Type 3
                Type 4
Text speed
Text style
Return to title screen >> No
                         Yes
Exit game >> No
            Yes
Return to game
----------------------------------

You will notice some small differences between this and the one described in
Kanon.3.  It is also here that you will see differences between the text box
types.  Again, choose the one you like the most.

--------------------------------------------------------
Kanon.6 :: Closing thoughts
--------------------------------------------------------

How was that?  Please, if you know Japanese, help me out!  I'm a native Chinese
speaker, and haven't taken ANY courses in Japanese writing/reading.  All I know
of Japanese is from watching fansubbed anime.

A VERY special thanks to Haeleth for letting me use his translation of the
menu in this FAQ.  It is useful to note that his translation changes the menu
somewhat, but it's all in English, so it shouldn't matter.  ^_^
