I) Introduction
It feels kind of silly writing in 2018 a Walkthrough for an almost unknown PC
game released in 1993.
The reason for it is that after seeing one of my favorite streamers on Twitch
(
https://www.twitch.tv/themexicanrunner ) playing it and being unable to
finish it as part of a challenge, I thought it would be a challenge in itself
finishing the game without any sort of walkthough or hints exsting on-line.
This walkthrough servers as a "proof of achievement", as well as an help for
anybody else unlucky enough to have sine reason to finish it :)
Do not expect an overly detailed walkhthrough, as I'm not willing to go through
further torture for the sake of it. Fortunately the map are relatively small so
that you should still have a good idea of the places I'm referring to.
II) Game Info
Jonny Quest could be defined as an Action Adventure, not following a specific
template as it was normal for PC games at the times, where developer were more
willing to experiment.
Unfortunately, Jonny Quest is a total mess. Broken combat, janky controls,
pixel hunting, a lot of red herrings (objects that have no use), multiple ways
to get stuck for good.
Really unacceptable for a 1993 PC game...
III) General Tips
Combat - The combat in Jonny Quest is so bad that you'll want to avoid it as
much as possible.
I have been able to beat up the starting baddies in the jungle with kicks,
but otherwise the best strategy is just to stall and wait for your friend to
use magic, and hope it kills the enemy eventually.
The best strategy for stalling I found it to be walking to the right side of
the screen, then double backflip up to the left side, rinse and repeat.
As far as I can tell, when he shows up, when he uses magic and the effects of
the spells are completely random, so you might be stalling for a long time.
Cell - When you lose in combat (or get bitten by a Snake and faint) you'll wake
up in the cell on the first floor of the temple.
As far as I can tell, you can only escape:
- The first time, by getting the key from your dog
- If you beat the guards, they will eventually drop a key (note: it's the
"gold" key. The "golden" key won't work)
- By calling your dad or his buddy on the communicator. If you do it a second
time, it's instant Game Over
For the most part, if you get caught you should always reload.
IV) Walkthrough
When you have control of Jonny, go north where the some huts and the Shaman's
son are, and get the Fishing Pole inside of a hut. (F3->Select object with
arrow keys->F1)
Find the big Pond in the forest and pick up the three rocks lying around it.
One of them will have a Worm, use it on the Fishing Pole to bait it (Select
first object with arrow keys-> F4 -> Select second object -> F3)
Go inside the Pond and use the baited Fishing Pole (Select Object-> F3) after
a while you should catch a fish.
Now go to the bottom left of the forest. A screen or so to the right you should
find another village with the Shaman outside.
NOTE: be careful about how do you speak with the Shaman, you can insult him and
soft-lock the game. Always be honest and positive. Since the game will troll
you by having the "bad" options first, it's easy to screw up. Make sure you
save before speaking to him.
Speak to him (F1) and he will ask you for a Fish for his dinner. Talk to him
again and give him the Fish. He will say that you need to find idols inside
the temple, but only 4 are true idols, and you need a way to tell them from the
fake ones.
He will ask you for a herb growing below the tallest tree in the forest, a
white "star" and still water.
Grab the Filled Cup of Water inside one of the huts.
You will find the herb below a tree in the forest. I cannot remember exactly
where, but it's not hard to find. Just comb the forest until you spot it.
The white "star" it's a crystal that it is found inside one of the three
statues located in small clearing in the forest.
Just try every statue until you find it.
Get close to a statue, press F3, select the statue in the menu and press F3
again. If it's the correct one, the crystal will roll out.
Once you have the Herb, the Crystal, the Filled Cup (you can refill it in the
pond if you empty it by accident) get back to the Shaman: he will tell you to
use them in this order on the "Tikal Flame".
It's finally time to get to the temple: it's a the top right corner of the map.
If you have been fighting some baddies, you will have notices that they drop
some items. The only one you really need is the Machete. If you keep fighting
bad guys outside and they don't drop anything any more, it is possible that
they dropped it already and it's somewhere in the forest. You might want to
restart in this case, as it might be a pain finding it.
NOTE: the flame atop of the temple IS NOT the one the Shaman told you about.
If you use the items for the ritual, you will soft-lock the game.
At the temple, get close to the left side wall covered with vines, and use the
Machete from the menu with it. The entrance will be revealed.
Like the baddies outside, also those inside will drop a few items the first
few times you fight them. Of the items they drop, you will need only the Pliers
and the first Relic (Sun Medallion) .
The relic is one of the 5 items you need to finish the game, you might drop it
to free some inventory space (close to the stairs of one of the temple floors
are good locations to drop objects) for the time being.
Of the other items the baddies drop, the First Aid Kit is useful if you get
bitten by a snake, and the "gold" key will get you out of Jail, but in general
you should try to avoid both occurrences in the first place.
Navigate to the stairs to the second floor, on the rightmost side of the map.
On the second floor, you will find the second relic (Jaguar Figurine) on the
top left of the map.
From the entrance, go down and right, and there should be two niches with many
crates within a short distance.
Enter the rightmost one and press F3 close to the crates: a flute should
show up (if not, move to another position). Take it.
To the right of the entrange, you will eventually find a room with some beds
and a Battery in it. Ignore both the battery and the Boots, and instead get in
the middle of the two beds on the left. Press F3 and you should find a metal
hanger. Take it.
In the inventory screen, use the Pliers with the Hanger, and the use the
resulting Wire with the Flute.
Now the flute is clean an ready for use (now you can drop both the Wire and the
Pliers).
To the North-East of this room, you will find another one with a big flame.
This is the one the Shaman meant. Use the Herb, the Crystal and the Cup of
Water on the Tikal Flame. You will obtain a Red Crystal. Take it.
If you keep going right and then down, you should get to a small room with
some pots and a skeleton on the floor. Press F3 close to the skeleton, and
a few Seeds will show up in the menu. Take them.
Still on the second Floor, on the left side from the entrance, there is a room
that appears closed on all sides, with a Skeleton on the wall on the South.
You can access this room through a fake wall, from the room on its right.
Just walk to the wall and keep walking left. One of the pots will look slightly
different than the others. Get to it and press F3. You should find Two Small
Stones.Take them.
Before going to the third floor, let's backtrack to the first one. Get to the
room on the top left of the floor, with a wooden table inside. Ignore the
Flash, the Mortar and Pestle and the Seeds (useless, you already have the good
ones). Instead, get close to the pots, and use the empty Cup with the one
containing the Plant Food. The cup now should look filled with green liquid.
Get to the second floor again, to the bottom-left corner, where a large plant
pot sits. Use the Seeds with the pot (remember, those you found on the skeleton
on this floor, not those from the first floor), and then the Cup filled with
Plant Food. Take the big Gourd that has grown in the vase. On your way out,
take the Ceremonial Axe from one of the 4 statues directly North of the vase.
Get back again on the first floor, to the room with the bloody sacrificial
table use the Ceremonial Axe on the Gourd, and then the broken Gourd on the
table.
The blood will clear revealing a door, get close to it, enter the menu and open
it (F3). Get the idol inside. Confirm that is actually a true idol by using the
Red Crystal on it (it will turn green).
Now, go all the way to the third floor, the stairs are to the top-right part
of the second floor map. You will find the third relic (Malachite Bowl) on the
floor in a small room on the rightmost part of the map.
The fourth Relic (Golden Dagger) is instead on the floor on the top-left area
of the map, inside a niche.
Get to the room with the lava flowing in it, waling left from the entrance.
of the bottom right corner of the room there is a grey key. Take it.
Get back to the second floor, go down from the stairs up to the corridor,
where the mural with two persons facing each other is. In the middle of the
mural there is a keyhole. Use the grey Key you just found on it. The water
will drain from the upper room to that with the lava below.
Backtrack to it and get the idol that before was unreachable because of the
lava. Use the Red Crystal to confirm it's a true idol.
On the left area of the floor from the entrance, you will find a room with
a statute, an empty pedestal opposite to it, and a sarcophagous in the middle.
Get close to the statue, and use the Two Small Stones on it. An idol will
materialize on the pedestal. Take it and use the Red Crystal on it as before.
Finally, get to the room just on the left, where a snake protects the idol.
Use the flute (remember to clean it as described previously) on the snake,
get the idol and use the Red Crystal on it.
Nearly done. Make sure you have all the relics and the 4 true (green) idols,
and go to the bottom-left part of the third floor. A door that was barring the
way should have disappeared. Go north to the closed door with the 4 small
niches on the sides.
Put the 4 idols in the niches (you need to DROP the idols when facing the
niches, using F2 in the menu) and the door will open.
Go north, watch the cutscene and use the Red Book on the floor.
Use the communicator (F2) to contact dad, which will tell you to meet him
outside. Just go all the way back to the temple entrance, to watch the final
cutscene.
TO BE CONTINUED... NOT!
I'm pretty sure the "true" idols are always those I mentioned in the
walkthrough, if you are curious about how to get the fake ones:
- One is simply lying on a room in one of the floors (second or third, can't
remember).
- One is in the boiling water room you drain with the Grey Key.
- One is in the room with the closing door on the first floor. You can get it
by using the Heavy Rock found on the same floor on the pedestal to replace
the idol.
- One is on the third floor in one of the rooms covered in cobwebs. Just light
the Torch found on the first floor close to the entrance and use it on the
cobwebs.
You have finished Jonny Quest! Congratulations... I guess.
