01.)                    INTRODUCTION                                 G0100
===============================================================================

Welcome to 'Jack the Ripper' for the PC, released by The Adventure Company in
2004. There are more than one game by the same name so if you reading this then
note which game you are checking for.

Without spoiling anything, the story takes place in early 1900s, where a killer
roams New York City that has similar traits as the Whitechapel (London)
killings a few years earlier. In case you never read into the figure that was
Jack the Ripper, one theory suggest that he migrated to US after the last
murder which explains the sudden halt of kills. The game attemps to imply that
this could be a very plausible explanation due to the recent events in the
city.

Suggestions, comments or errors - tell me about it. Enjoy!

02.)                    BASICS                                       G0200
===============================================================================

Pretty much the standard first-person adventure fare. You interact with
objects using the left mouse button, right click takes you to the inventory
screen from where you can select your items, read through documents related to
the case and travel around New York City.

===============================================================================
03.)                    WALKTHROUGH                                  G0300
===============================================================================

November 16th 1901, Day #1
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
New York Today:
Get up from your desk, turn towards the main office and walk along until you
find R. Bur's office door. Open and enter, then talk to him after taking the
newspaper. Exit via the double-doors and go down the stairs to reach the map
screen.
Drag the Nov. 16 Daily Illustrated newspaper over the pin on Whitehall St. to
make the Police Station banner appear. Go there now.
Police Station:
Talk o the desk sergeant to be let in. Pan left and enter the double-doors.
Take the first door on the right to Carter's office. Talk to him and pick up
the preliminary report. You can now place two more banners on the map (right
click), and your next stop is Crime 15 Nov.
Crime 15 Nov:
Find a crunched up piece of paper near the barrel on the right. Go up this
fire escape to find another crime sketch. There is a quick scene when you move
the cursor over the nearby raven.
Blue Velvet:
Proceed ahead and pan right to find The Blue Velvet. The second time you knock
on the door allows you to enter. Go down the hall and talk madam behind the
counter. Pan left to find a flyer for the Red Chapel at the desk in the corner.
Red Chapel:
You automatically talk to Jason. Afterwards pan right and enter the alley on
the right of the mailbox. Ascend the stairs to the backstage door and ring the
bell. Find Abigail in her dressing room. Talk to her.
New York Today:
Talk to Paul, the guy in the middle of the room, about the illustrator and
the rest of the stuff. Sit at your desk to write a story.
Red Chapel:
This time we will go through the main entrance. Walk across the club and go
through the curtain to the backstage. Talk to Abigail.
Blue Velvet:
Back in the brothel itself, go further into the next room and then take the
wooden stairs up to find Gilda. Talk to her. If you step outside the brothel
and look at the night sky the scene will fad to the next day.
November 17th 1901, Day #2
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

New York Today:
Talk to Paul about everything. Your next task is to find the tickets. Go to
your desk to find the November 1, 1901 newspaper. Tag the new pin on the map
with this to get Crime 31 Oct.

Crime 31 Oct:
All you can do here is go forward and pan left to find the raven again. This
might be very optional.

Blue Velvet:
Talk to the newspaper kid and then continue to the back of the building. When
you arrive in a dead end with broken wheels you will know it is the right
place. You can also find an iron bar to take. Descend the steps to find a wire
and either use this wire or the iron bar to attempt in unlocking the door. The
newspaper kid will come along and tell you the secret knock. Knock on the door
and you will be let in. Talk to Patson, then descend into the casino area. When
you step into the second room you will hear Patson come down as well and you
can now find him behind the bar. Before you talk to him you want to play "The
Star" one armed bandit and make at least 12 bucks. Talk to Patson and buy the
ticket. Grab the ticket and exit the joint.

New York Today:
Give the World Season Ticket to Paul, then take the calling card from his
table before moving on.

Red Chapel:
Enter the side alley and ring the bell. The manager will open and you can now
give him the calling card to be allowed talking to Abi. She is in the middle of
the center stage. After going through all the available topics you can leave
again.

Police Station:
Approach the desk and Police Chief Carter will talk to you. Talk to him about
everything. Pick up the autopsy from the desk.

New York Today:
Talk to Bur about the illustrator. Go to your desk and write today's story.

In the evening you can find a note on Bur's door for your appointment.

Blue Velvet:
Jason will automatically approach you and you must go through all dialogue
before he leaves you alone. Enter the brothel and walk to the central area
where madam tells you everyone is busy right now. You will notice the Chinese
guy who was posting something outside has just entered here. Leave the brothel
and check out the advertising he posted (this is where you start the area).
Take the advertisement.

Red Chapel:
Optional you can enter the theater and talk to Paul and then listen to Abi
perform. From the starting area, turn around and enter the alley beside Laundry
Wang. Open the gate and approach the door at the back. Remove the white banner
on the left to reveal two zodiac stones. Turn them to the Dragon on the left
knob and the Ox on the right knob. Talk to the "guard".

November 18th 1901, Day #3
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
New York Today:
Knock on Bur's office door and then eavesdrop. Talk to Mr. Silk. When you hear
about a package for you, go to your desk and open it. Read the letter and then
look at the other smaller object.
November 19th 1901, Day #4
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

New York Today:
Step inside the office and talk to Bur about everything.

Police Station:
Speak to Jeff to hear that the chief is in his office. Talk to the chief in
his office (through the double doors on the left, then turn right to Carter's
office). You will hear a lot of news.

Red Chapel:
Step into the alley and ring the backstage bell to be let in (if you come here
before talking to the police chief there is no answer). Step through the red
curtains and talk to Paul and Abigail. Read the advert on the newspaper between
them to get a new location.

Pinkerten Agency:
Look at the yellow/orange sign and press the buzzer. Talk to the man. Turn
right to find a Forensic counter. Ring the buzzer. Open the inventory and
open the blue notebook. Select the autopsy report and give it to the expert.
Enter the room on the opposite side of this room and approach the huge folders
on the table. Open up the 1888 one and then select the purple file. Read all
about the Whitechapel cases. Approach the bookcase at the back of this room
and select 'W' to find the Whitechapel cases. Read through it to find the
Freeman loan index card. Next, approach the file cabinet in the corner (with
the large rings) to find more info on the Whitechapel cases. You will take
a London Ripper letter and Jack the Ripper's Criminal Index Card. Interact
with the luminous panel and place the Jack the Ripper Letter 1 on it. Also
place the London Ripper letter. Drag the second letter for that both "Dear"
overlap. A second page will automatically appear. Overlap the "Jack the Ripper"
signatures. If done correctly you will hear a sound. Do not forget to pick up
the letters again before leaving.

New York Today:
Time to write today's story.

Blue Velvet:
Jason wants some cash so give him some to get info and him out of the way.
Enter the brothel and after a quick comment from madam you can go up the stairs
in the back. Talk to Gilda.

Red Chapel:
Enter the theatre. There is a move playing now but you can just watch standing
around. When you step outside again you should get a scene once looking into
the night sky.

November 20th 1901, Day #5
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
New York Today:
Talk to Bur in his office.
Pinkerten Agency:
Ring the buzzer to gain access, then turn towards the Forensic counter and
buzz the guy back to the front. Read the report on the counter.
Blue Velvet:
You should find the limping guy with another drunk sitting on some crates.
They will tell you where to find the shelter. Place the hospital ticket on
your new map push pin.
Hospital:
Enter through the door on the right of the counter, proceed ahead and turn
left to find a woman mopping the floor. That is all we can do here for now.
New York Today:
Talk to Paul, then type your story.
Hospital:
Enter through the same door as during the day but this time turn right. Find
the medical grip on the table and then turn around, continuing to the place
where you found the woman mopping. Descend into the basement. Pan left to find
a small cabinet on the wall. Use the medical grip to open it and take the
mortuary and Dr. Tumbletwo keys. Proceed down the hall and use the mortuary key
to unlock the mortuary. Proceed towards the white door and do not let the music
pee in your pants just yet, save your game and prepare for a puzzle.
Basically you have to get through the cold storage room up ahead. If you are
stuck inside you will freeze to death. You can still escape if you are stuck
inside by pulling above the door so do not worry too much. Follow the
instructions closely. Pull the right rope at the white door. The door will open
but slowly close again. Step inside, turn left and pick up the meat carcass.
Turn further left and step through the closing door. Approach the empty table
in the distance and place the meat on it. Return to the door you entered to
find a butcher knife. Use it on the meat. Pick up the right meat half and
return to the white door. It has probably closed by now so pull the rope again.
Step through and hang the meat on the hook at the other end of the room. Pull
this matching rope to escape.
November 21st 1901, Day #6
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

New York Today:
Talk to Paul next to his camera toy.

Pinkerten Agency:
Talk to the archivist behind the desk. Take the key from the desk. Pan left and
look at the cabinet. Use the key you just got to unlock it, then open and check
out 'T'. You will get an index card for Tumbletwo.

Hospital:
Once again enter through the swing door and turn right towards Tumbletwo's
office. Use the key from your inventory to enter the office. Go behind the desk
and read the notebook. Find a key inside the ink jar and use this to unlock the
left drawer and find thesis. You cannot actually take anything here and it is
better to return the key to the jar before leaving.

Blue Velvet:
Patrick the newspaper boy has now appeared. Talk to him about Patson. If you
forgot already, his place is at the end of this alley down a few steps and
through the door. Talk to him downstairs. Pick up the key from the table.

Red Chapel:
Ring the bell at the backstage door to find Abigail. Talk to her. She will give
you a new toy.

New York Today:
Talk to Paul again who is back at his desk, then go write your daily story.

Hospital:
We have been here a few times now, you should know how to get to Tumbletwo's
office. Inside, step forward next to the desk and face the wall. On the right
of the diploma is a panel to interact with. Use the pass key with the lock
beyond. The wall with the diploma has now become a door.

Inside, take the lap next to you to light up the place. Descend the stairs and
take the left down (you can walk around this entire place so it does not really
matter). Oh and yes, you will hear voices soon. Find a body slab door that is
of different color and can be opened. Look through the gap to see who is
talking and a scene.

November 22nd 1901, Day #7
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
New York Today:
Talk to Bur in his office, then pick up the newspaper in the center of the
main office.
Red Chapel:
Enter through the back and talk to Abigail on stage. Give her the gun back for
more conversation topics.
Police Station:
Speak to Jeff to hear that the chief is in his office. Talk to the chief in
his office. Pick up the police report on his desk, then open up the map and
pin the new crime scene.
Crime 21 Nov:
The raven will fly away once you center in on it, then move over to its
position as you can only grab the sketch on the ground from here.
Red Chapel:
Approach the newspaper boy and take the letter he has for you.
New York Today:
Talk to Paul and write today's story.
Hospital:
Talk to the watchman about Tumbletwo.
Red Chapel:
Enter the theatre from the front and approach the manager sitting on the right
side of the stage.
Blue Velvet:
You will find Tumbletwo inspecting a girl near the bar. Give him the key to his
office.
Hospital:
Talk to the watchman again. If you go somewhere else (Blue Velvet, Red Chapel)
and stare into the sky the day will end.
November 23rd 1901, Day #8
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

New York Today:
Talk to Paul, then take the Moulin Rouge poster from your desk.

Pinkerten Agency:
Talk to Ms Robinson in the archive room. Return to the main room and look at
the telegram machine. First select the paper to insert it all the way. For
Contact you want to type London (you can find out how to type Morse code from
the nearby sheet but I will give you all the solutions now). The code is
..-- (3) ----. (9) .---- (1) ..--- (2)
Use -> to separate the numbers and finish input with the large handle. For the
name you will do the same:
.. (S) .. (I) .-.. (L) -.- (K) -. (N) . (E) .-. (R)
If you made any mistake you can use the <- arrow. The correct input for both
Contact and Subject results in a small melody.

Blue Velvet:
Go all the way to Patson's hideout and give him the pass key and Moulin Rouge
poster.

Red Chapel:
Enter through the back and talk to Abigail on stage.

New York Today:
Write your chronicle.

Blue Velvet:
You will be interrupted by the limping guy once again. After a short talk,
enter The Blue Velvet and go upstairs to find Gilda. Talk to her.

Red Chapel:
Enter the theatre and leave again, staring at the night to end the day.

November 24th 1901, Day #9
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Red Chapel:
Enter the alley behind the laundry shop to find Sally. Talk to her.
Silk's Workshop:
Proceed one screen ahead and turn to the left door. Move the knocker aside to
find the key to the workshop. Use it to unlock the door, then go inside and
follow around behind the curtain. Looking through the window behind the bed
will give you a small surprise. Pick up the empty jar on the shelf and return
to the main room. Use the empty jar on the bucket of blood. Exit the room and
return the key behind the knocker.
Pinkerton Agency:
Inside, find Ms Robinson and she will inform you about the telegram. Read it.
Approach the forensic counter and ring the buzzer. Give him the jar filled with
blood.
New York Today:
Talk to Paul behind the camera, then write today's story.
Silk's Workshop:
Turn left and go up the fire escape opposite the workshop. Watch Silk paint for
a short while until the large man from earlier comes in with news. You will get
a new location on your map.
Crime 24 Nov:
Approach the crime scene, looking at the raven will give you another flashback
with that horrid music. Pan to Silkner for a quick conversation, then pan over
to the body and the policeman will uncover her. After a while the chief will
tell you to meet him tomorrow which is the last thing happening today.
November 25th 1901, Day #10
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Talk to Bur in the main area and pick up the newspaper from Paul's desk.

Red Chapel:
Ring the bell in the back alley to find that Abigail has made her way to your
office already.

New York Today:
Find Abigail with Paul near your desk. Also pick up the letter on your desk.
After reading it you should talk to Paul and Abi again. Look at the calendar
on your desk to check the dates. You now have a red and blue pencil. Pick up
the red one and click on the dates for the London murders:
August 31, September 8, September 30 and November 9.
Pick up the blue pencil and mark the New York murders:
October 31, November 15, 21 and 24 in 1901. Also circle November 27 for the
next victim (you will get a hint if you take too long). Talk to Paul to confirm
and the phone should ring now. It is in the corner of your desk behind the
filofax if you need help finding it.

Police Station:
Walk towards the double doors and pan left to find Silkner. Talk to him. Talk
to the desk sergeant and you can go see the chief. Enjoy the talk with him.

Pinkerton Agency:
Find Miss Robinson at her usual desk. Talk to her about the pubs. Read the
book she gives you and select the Low Side District tab. Look at the map on
the left page. There are a total of 10 pubs. Drag and drop the orange pins to
their locations. The addresses are listed on the right page but you can also
just zoom around with your map until you find the correct spot. The cursor will
turn grayish at that point. When all 10 have been placed the yellow crime
tags will automatically appear as well.

New York Today:
Write today's story.

Blue Velvet:
Enter and find Gilda in the back. Talk to her.

Red Chapel:
Enter the theater, then talk to the manager behind the bar.

Blue Velvet:
Jason will approach you and the day ends automatically.

November 26th 1901, Day #11
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
New York Today:
Talk to Paul at his usual spot.
Red Chapel:
Talk to Abi backstage, pick up the gun too.
Crime 24 Nov:
Find Silkner's assistant laying flowers. Talk to him.
Pinkerton Agency:
Talk to Miss Robinson again. Grab the key she placed on the desk and open up
the lowest drawer below the luminous board. Take all four maps. Look at the
board and place the New York map (with the pins) first, then the railway map.
Match the two maps so that the rail tracks match the roads (these are elevated
rail tracks). Talk to Miss Robinson, a new location is now available.
Police Station:
Talk to the desk sergeant, no luck.
Crime 27 Nov:
Pan left and proceed towards the tracks, go up the ladder and look outside
the window. You will see a couple making out in the distance. Descend the
ladder and go where you saw the couple but instead turn right into a house,
up the stairs and then down a ladder outside. This exploring must be done to
trigger Paul reappearing back at the office.
New York Today:
Talk to Paul. Ask Bur for a camera. Pick up the pieces in the box on the right.
You have seen Paul play with the camera before, you have to set it up as well
on the same spot. Start with the tripod, then place the darkroom, plate, flash
support, magnesium powder in that order. Take the entire camera back to your
inventory. Before the action starts we have to write our daily report of
course.
Crime 27 Nov:
Return to the spot across the road. Proceed towards the window and set up the
tripod with the darkroom and plate. The flash support along with the magnesium
powder belong to the right of the camera tripod. Once you look through the
camera the action will start. The controls are done with the mouse slightly off
the center, so do not try to click on the actual crosshair. Follow the woman
right and when you see the man attack her you should quickly press the black
pump in the top right corner. Run across to the woman and talk to her.
November 27th 1901, Day #12
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

New York Today:
Talk to Bur and Paul on the right.

Pinkerton Agency:
Step left and talk to the man in the bowler hat. Give him the plate to develop
the photos. Now you can go to several people to hear about people's reaction to
your heroic deed, but you can also select the map and return to the agency
right away and talk to the man. The photo is already developed. Take it from
the desk in front of him. Before you go back to the office to show your photo
you must waste some time. I suggest you talk to Patrick the newspaper boy
(either at the Blue Velvet or Red Chapel) and Fausta inside The Blue Velvet.

New York Today:
Give Bur your photo and talk to him. If this is not possible then you need to
talk to some people before returning here. When you are done you need to write
your final chronicle.

Red Chapel:
Enter the theatre and proceed through the red curtain in the back. Talk to the
manager about Abi. Read the letter on the desk in her dressing room. After the
scene you can move on.

Blue Velvet:
Jason will appear in front of you and tell you about Abi. Talk to the bouncer
inside The Blue Velvet (he is behind the door in case you never noticed).

Police Station:
Talk to the desk sergeant to put an extra patrol out for Abi.

New York Today:
Paul is guarding the office entrance and tells you Abi has not shown up here.

Crime 21 Nov:
After having spoken to all people above you can come here to find Abi. If she
is not here yet you can just re-enter and she should now show up. Talk to
her, then open the box for a short scene. Run behind Abi and follow the path to
find a woman behind the steps. Turn to where you came from to see someone run
towards you, then follow the direction he ran. At the docks you can merely find
a raven fly off so enjoy the view...
