A point-and-click fantasy adventure game by Lonely Troops
Hopefully helpful guide by LadyNorbert
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
10-29-18 Initial upload of version 1.0
10-31-18 Version 1.2 - edited merchant information for the baker and
woodcutter
11-01-18 Version 1.3 - hopefully final version; just cleaned up some little
nitpicky things that were bothering me
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I think the 'Hero of the Kingdom' series is adorable. As of this writing, the
third game has recently been released, and while I don't have it yet, I
thought it would be fun to go back and play the first two. While playing the
first one, though, I ran into some difficulty keeping certain things straight.
Then I thought, if I'm having this problem, maybe other people are as well.
I know this game has been out for a few years, but since there are no other
FAQs for it on this site, I figured it can't hurt to create one.
I don't want to do a straight walkthrough for this game, as it's fairly
simple to follow and there's really no way to fail. But it seemed like there
were some particularly useful things I could explain for those who are new
to the heroics. Maybe it'll even help some returning players.
In other words, it's dangerous to go alone. Take this.

This document contains UNMARKED SPOILERS for certain parts of the game.
Nothing major, but just to be on the safe side, I'm sticking in this note.
Consider yourself warned.

I. Basic Information
====================
-------
A. Plot
-------
You are a young man living on a small farm with your widowed father. One day,
he leaves the farm to take care of some things; in his absence, the farm
is ransacked by bandits and burned to the ground. You must go out into the
world to search for your father and tell him what has happened... except that
this simple errand brings you into the heart of a nefarious plot to destroy
the beloved kingdom in which you live. Take up your weapons, because destiny
has chosen you to become... the Hero of the Kingdom!
-------------------------
B. General gameplay facts
-------------------------
* Once your character receives the map, you can access it at any time by
clicking on the directional compass in the upper left corner of the game
screen. The icon in the upper right corner allows you to exit to the main
menu. In the lower left corner is a backpack icon which opens your inventory.
The lower right corner has a question mark; when in doubt, click on this to
find out where you should go next.
** However, the question mark icon disappears after the main quest has been
completed. It only gives directions about the main quest chain, so it's of
no help keeping track of objectives in side quests.
* The game saves automatically, so you don't have to worry about keeping your
save file updated.
* Whenever lines of dialogue appear on the screen, either your own or another
character's, click on them to make the scene continue.
* Sleeping periodically is required in order to have sufficient energy for
various tasks. Places to sleep are identified by a "Z-z-z" icon. There are
two kinds, wilderness camps and inns. Sleeping at an inn costs gold and
includes an unseen meal; using a camp is free but dips into your food stores.
Note that while camps restore variable amounts of energy (represented by a
heart icon), staying at an inn will always give you 20 energy.
* The one problem you are most likely to come across is a need for gold. To
that end, try to refrain from buying items until you know for certain that
they are needed for the plot to advance or to complete a quest. There are
also a few ways to barter goods in order to make a profit, which I mention in
the Merchants section.
* Many of the food items you procure in the course of the game are things you
yourself cannot actually eat. You can eat fresh fruit, bread, cheese, and
meat; you can use certain mushrooms as ingredients in potions. But fish, eggs,
crayfish, and mushrooms with brown caps serve no purpose except as what is
known in gaming circles as vendor trash. Don't be afraid to sell these or give
them as quest items.
* Be sure to return to areas you think you have completed - yes, this includes
your home farm - periodically throughout the game. Because you cannot perform
certain tasks (hunting specific animals, collecting specific herbs, etc.)
until you have learned the skills and acquired the equipment necessary, spots
where these tasks can be performed will not be revealed until after you learn
the skill in question. So check different places after learning new things.
Also, hidden treasure caches are sometimes not found until later in the game.
* Search the screen carefully for unusual colors and shapes. There is never a
penalty for clicking on anything, and some of the things (and even people)
which can be found are very well hidden, so don't be afraid to try anything.
* It's possible, when hunting or performing other tasks, to fail at them.
What causes this is uncertain; it seems to be random chance. Fishing poles in
particular have an unfortunate tendency to break now and then. No matter
what happens, however, rest assured that you cannot lose the game.
* Once you have completed the final quest, your game is not over. After the
credits, you will be returned to the main menu; however, clicking on the Play
button will return you to your game in progress. So if you defeat the Dark
Lord and still have achievements to unlock, non-essential quests to complete,
or even a few areas to discover, don't panic. You can roam the kingdom for
as long as you want.
---------------------------------
C. The purpose of various objects
---------------------------------
Food is always for either eating or selling. Treasures, like pearls and gold
jewelry, are always for selling. But other items in the game may have other
reasons for being there, and it's not always clear what that purpose is. Check
the Merchants section for where to buy these things, if you can't make them
yourself. Remember that hunting, fishing, and foraging always require a cost
of energy in order to complete them, but many of these actions require other
equipment as well.
1. Herbs and mushrooms
* Healing herbs - red flowers, used to create healing potion.
* Night flowers - blue flowers, used to create pheromone.
* Sun solution ingredients - yellow flowers, used to create sun solution.
(The game gives them no other name so that's what I'm calling them.)
* Special flowers - white flowers requested by the master herbalist. They
are connected to a side quest of some minor difficulty, and serve no purpose
other than to be part of that quest chain.
* Mushrooms - brown-capped mushrooms which exist solely to sell.
* Poison mushrooms - pink-capped mushrooms, used to create poison.
* Magic mushrooms - blue-capped mushrooms, used to create magic potion.
* Special mushrooms - purple-capped mushrooms, only available after the
master herbalist assigns you the quest of gathering 24 of them; they can't be
used for anything except that quest, and stop appearing in the game once you
deliver them to him.
* Flowers from trees - pink flowers, only available after the medicaster
gives you a quest to bring her five sacks of them; like the special shrooms,
they are only used in that quest and stop appearing after you complete it.
2. Potions
* Healing potion - take a wild guess.
* Magic potion - needed to apply to weapons for fighting zombies.
* Poison - needed to apply to weapons for hunting big game like bears.
* Pheromone - a purple potion needed in order to catch shielded fish.
* Sun solution - a golden potion. In the next game in the series, we learn
that it can be used to restore an addled person's senses. In this game,
however, it mostly exists to be sold to vendors.
3. Tools
* Torches - needed to light dark spaces. Can only be used once.
* Saws, wood axes, pickaxes, hammers, and shovels - serve the same basic
purposes that they do in real life. Can be used repeatedly unless they break.
* Rope, wood, and stone - usually needed for building construction or
repair. Can only be used once.
* Fishing rods and bait - used for fishing. The rod can be used repeatedly
unless it breaks; bait can only be used once.
* Algae hooks and empty barrels - used for gathering algae. The hook can
be used repeatedly unless it breaks; barrels can only be used once.
* Fishing nets - used for capturing shielded fish. Can be used repeatedly
unless it breaks.
* Sickles and sacks - needed for harvesting night flowers. The sickle can
be used repeatedly unless it breaks; sacks can only be used once.
* Baskets - needed for gathering healing flowers. Can only be used once.
* Mortar and pestle sets and empty flasks - needed for collecting the
yellow flowers and making sun solution, which all takes place in one step.
The mortar and pestle can be used repeatedly unless they break; flasks can
only be used once.
4. Weapons
Except for arrows, which can only be used once, all weapons can be used
repeatedly unless they break.
* Dagger - used for hunting wolves and boars.
* Bow and arrow - used for hunting deer, wolves, and lynx.
* Spear - used for hunting bears and crocodiles.
* Maces and shields - used in more difficult fights with human opponents
or zombies.
5. Golden eggs
This is a special treasure, which can't be sold to the Jeweller (unlike all
the others). They only become important in the game when the master huntsman
in the Secret Meadow assigns you the quest to find them. I'm not giving other
quest information in this document, but this one is so unusual that I thought
it deserved a special mention. Here's where to find the five golden eggs:
* Mountain Pass - in the ravine, just a little way north of the bridge. You
first take the twinkling pile of coins seen there, and muse that you can find
more if you move the stone. Once you've acquired a pickaxe, click on the icon
of a treasure chest in order to gather additional riches, including the egg.
* Fishing Village - on an island in the lower right corner of the map,
a little to the left of your question mark icon; the island can't be seen
until you build your boat and thus open up the full map of this region.
* Logging Camp - on the cliff at the right-hand edge of the screen.
* Mines - at the base of a tree at the bottom of the scene.
* Castle - to the left of the actual castle building, at the base of a bush.
After collecting all five eggs, return to the master huntsman and present
them to him (they serve no other purpose), and he will teach you the secret
of hunting large prey like bears and crocodiles.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
=================================================================
II. The Kingdom, or: Where Am I Going and What Will I Find There?
=================================================================
This is a list of who and what can be found where throughout the kingdom. Do
note that not all amenities are available at all times; you can't hunt for
certain animals or gather certain ingredients until after you've learned the
necessary skills, as I note in the general gameplay section. The list for each
section is what will eventually be available in each area after all of the
skills have been unlocked.
Initially, fast travel is not an option because you have no map. Once your
farmer friend leaves you in the Yellow Forest, he gives you the map. It will
automatically update each time you enter a new area. Your current location
is indicated by an X; click on the boot to fast travel to a different place.
Remember that hunting, fishing, and herb gathering locations will vanish from
the map after they've been used up. I don't mention eggs or mushrooms in
this section, but there's at least one instance of each to be found in almost
every location in the game. Similarly, you can find at least one instance of
crayfish wherever you find blue water, so look for little patches of red
along the shorelines. However, eggs and crayfish will not appear in the scene
until you've seen your avatar mention them in his dialogue; certain types of
mushrooms, herbs, huntable animals, and other kinds of collectibles (such as
pearls) will also not be visible until after another character teaches you
about how to collect them. Also be on the lookout for barrels and crates,
which can be found all over the place, and watch for twinkling icons - those
are hidden treasure caches.

of goodies, but you find something much more important - your father.
Amenities available here:
* Bear pit (used only once)
* Hunting (deer)
* Hunters (recruitable for 40 gold each, needed for the main plot)
* Main bandit camp (must be raided as part of the plot)
----------------
M. Military Camp

and join the kingdom's army as a soldier.
Amenities available here:
* Sleeping camp (cost: 1 unit of cheese)
* Fishing

50 gold each and soldiers cost 80 gold each; this is only
available once you yourself are promoted to captain)
* Archery range, blacksmith, and potion seller (see Merchant section)
--------
N. Mines
--------
As a soldier, one of the first tasks you're assigned is to find out what's
holding up production here. Once everything is back to normal, it's got
some useful things.
Amenities available here:
* Hunting (wolf, bear, lynx)

It'll be a while before you can open this up. The influence of the Dark Lord
is causing the dead to rise and create problems. You'll need to consult with
the king's personal wizard, which requires you rescuing him from the camp of
lizardmen in the swamp - it's all a bit complicated but eventually you can
get in there to fight with skeletons and other bad things.
Amenities available here:
* Herbs (healing herbs, night flowers)
* Golden berries (for a woman's quest in town)
* Crypts (yes, you can go grave-robbing if you have torches; note that you
will lose 5 fame for each of the three crypts, but you will gain
a map to treasure near the mine)
---------
Q. Castle
---------
This is where the king lives. Shocking, I know.
Amenities available here:
* Herbs (healing herbs, night flowers, sun solution ingredients)
* Hunting (deer, The Old Wolf)
* Fishing
* Shielded fish
* Algae
------------
R. The Swamp
------------
You won't be able to enter the swamp until you are commissioned to do so as

before you can do it. Once inside, you'll find an alchemist's tower, a village
of friendly frogmen, and a village of unfriendly lizardmen called scarags.
Amenities available here:

and take advantage of what remains.
Amenities found here:
* Hunting (crocodile)
* Fishing
* Algae
* Portal to the Dark Tower (site of the final battle of the main quest -
no other amenities are found there)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
============================================
III. Merchants, or: Who Buys What From Whom?
============================================
Many quests require the purchase of equipment or the hirings of minions to
complete them. This includes those which are part of the plot - that's right,
you have to spend your own money to win the game. (That is, the character has
to spend his money; there are no real-world purchases for the player.)
The thing about this game which I've found the most frustrating is trying to
remember where I can buy some items and where I can sell others. You'll need
to sell some of your stuff in order to earn the money needed to buy other
stuff. Clicking on the question mark in the lower right corner of the screen
can sometimes get the game to tell you how much money you still need.
----------------
A. Mountain Pass
----------------
1. Labor camp
The merchant in the labor camp is the first you'll encounter in the game. He
does not buy anything from you, but he sells the following:
* Bread - 1 loaf for 9 gold
* Rope - 1 rope for 29 gold
* Pickaxe - 1 axe for 32 gold
* Torch - 1 torch for 17 gold
* Stone - 1 stone for 22 gold
2. Farm
After befriending the farmer in this part of the world, you learn that his
wife is too afraid of the bandits to travel in order to buy things they need.
She won't sell you anything, but she will buy the following:
* Fruit - 5 gold for 1 unit
* Fish - 5 gold for 1 fish
* Bread - 9 gold for 1 loaf
----------------
B. Yellow Forest
----------------
The only merchant here is a potion seller. He sells healing potion, but not
for gold - he only accepts food in exchange. He also tasks you with collecting
24 rare purple-capped mushrooms; after achieving this goal, he will teach you
more about herbalism and introduce you to the Secret Valley location.
The potion seller will accept any of the following in exchange for one bottle
of healing potion:
* Fruit - 5 units
* Vegetables - 5 units
* Fish - 4 fish
* Bread - 3 loaves
* Cheese - 2 units
* Meat - 2 units
There is also a mushroom buyer here, but he only appears after you have first
gone north to the mill and returned; once he buys your mushrooms, he
disappears and never returns.
-----------
C. The Mill
-----------
No one here will buy anything from you, but if you're in need of certain items,
this is a good place to find them.
1. Fruit seller
* Fruit - 1 unit for 4 gold, or 5 units for 20 gold
* Basket - 1 basket for 13 gold, or 3 baskets for 39 gold
Note that while buying items in bulk doesn't get any sort of a discount, it
does make the transactions go a little faster if you're buying a lot.
2. Farmstead
* Laborer - 20 gold hires 1 man to perform labor
* Shovel - 28 gold for 1 shovel
* Hammer - 20 gold for 1 hammer
* Wood axe - 24 gold for 1 axe
* Sickle - 18 gold for 1 sickle
It won't be evident the first time you come to this part of the kingdom, but
sickles are needed for gathering night flowers.
3. Water mill
The mill provides exactly one service, as you might expect from a mill. After
you've helped to repair the broken water wheel, the miller will happily make
flour for you.
* 1 sack of flour - costs 5 gold and 1 sack of grain
----------------------------
D. The Inn at the Crossroads
----------------------------
1. Farmer
Help this guy and he'll be willing to sell you food.
* Vegetables - 1 unit for 3 gold
2. The inn's kitchen
The inn's chef is always in need of more food for hungry travelers. He won't
sell you anything, but he'll buy from you.
* Vegetables - 3 gold for 1 unit
* Fruit - 3 gold for 1 unit
* Fish - 5 gold for 1 fish, or 25 gold for 5 fish
* Bread - 7 gold for 1 loaf
* Cheese - 9 gold for 1 unit
* Meat - 11 gold for 1 unit
--------
E. Farms
--------
Second only to the actual town, this section of the kingdom has the most
places to buy and sell items.
1. Grain seller
The grain seller does exactly what the title implies. He sells grain.
* Grain - 1 sack for 30 gold
2. Baker
The baker both buys and sells. If you buy grain from the grain seller (or
find some in random loot) and have it turned into flour at the mill, she can
turn it into bread for you. She also needs all the eggs you can bring her.
* Bread - 1 loaf for 8 gold or 6 loaves for 1 sack of flour
* Eggs - 2 gold for 1 egg, or 10 gold for 5 eggs
Note, however, that the baker does not become available as a vendor until
after you have constructed a fence around the grain fields for her. This
requires two hammers (in my experience, at least, one always breaks during
the project) and more wood than you will have until after you open up the
Logging Camp and get the woodcutter as a merchant.
3. Cheese and meat vendor
Again, exactly what it says on the tin. He only becomes available as a
merchant after you complete the extremely easy sidequest to track down his
six missing sheep, then kill the wolves in the north part of the scene.
* Cheese - 1 unit for 9 gold
* Meat - 1 unit for 11 gold
4. Old medicaster
Do a small quest for this elderly woman and she'll become a great source for
both buying and selling herb-related wares.
She sells the following:
* Sacks - 1 sack for 10 gold
* Baskets - 1 basket for 12 gold
* Empty flasks - 1 bottle for 14 gold
* Healing potion - 1 bottle in exchange for 1 basket of healing herbs
She also buys the following:
* Healing herbs - 25 gold for 1 basket
* Night flowers - 32 gold for 1 sack
* Sun solution - 47 gold for 1 bottle
5. Brent the hunter
When you hunt, or sometimes even just when finding random loot, you'll end up
with pelts, skins, and antlers. This is the guy who will take them off of
your hands, for a tidy sum. He also sells hunting supplies and teaches you
advanced hunting techniques; however, he doesn't become available as either
a merchant or a teacher until you bring him certain items as proof of your
hunting ability.
He sells the following:
* Bows - 1 bow for 70 gold
* Arrows - 5 arrows for 12 gold
He also buys the following:
* Wolf fur - 43 gold for 1 pelt
* Lynx fur - 65 gold for 1 pelt
* Bear fur - 160 gold for 1 pelt
* Crocodile leather - 170 gold for 1 skin
* Deer antlers - 33 gold for 1 set of antlers
Fun fact - Brent is the only character from this game to appear in the next
one. (Maybe that's why he actually has a name...)
------------------
F. Fishing Village
------------------
1. Bait shop
The owner of the bait shop is married to a woman whose brother, Jack, is
buried in the small cemetery just north of the fishing village. After you
complete her side quest concerning his troubled spirit, she convinces her
husband to lower his prices for you.
Before the quest is finished, he sells the following:
* Fish - 1 fish for 6 gold
* Fishing rod - 1 rod for 22 gold
* Bait - 1 bait for 2 gold, or 5 for 10 gold
* Fishing net - 1 net for 26 gold
* Algae hook - 1 hook for 24 gold
* Algae barrel - 1 barrel for 16 gold
After the quest is finished, he has the same merchandise but the prices
are different:
* Fish - 1 fish for 4 gold
* Fishing rod - 1 rod for 19 gold
* Bait - 1 bait for 1 gold, or 5 for 5 gold
* Fishing net - 1 net for 23 gold
* Algae hook - 1 hook for 21 gold
* Algae barrel - 1 barrel for 14 gold
2. Delicatessen merchant
This woman doesn't sell anything, but she'll buy your finds.
* Brown-capped mushrooms - 2 gold for 1 mushroom, or 10 gold for 5
* Crayfish - 10 gold for 1 crayfish
3. Boat maker
This guy serves exactly one purpose - to help you build a boat of your very
own. This is necessary to reach the island, to unlock the Boater
achievement, and also to open up the Fishing Village map so you can collect
one of the golden eggs for the master huntsman. You'll need 4 pieces of wood,
150 gold, and 75 fame. Once you craft the boat, he's no longer available for
anything.
----------------
G. Secret Valley
----------------
As noted in the section above, the master herbalist sets up shop here when
he shows you the region. He doesn't buy anything, but he sells:
* Healing herbs - 1 basket for 24 gold
* Night flowers - 1 sack for 32 gold
* Sun solution - 1 bottle for 45 gold
* Poisonous mushrooms - 1 mushroom for 5 gold
* Magic mushrooms - 1 mushroom for 13 gold
----------------
H. Secret Meadow
----------------
The master hunter isn't available as a merchant until after you help him
repair his ruined hunting lodge. Once you do, he'll teach you advanced
hunting techniques and both buy and sell items. It's very much worth noting
that you can buy meat from him for a slightly cheaper price than any other
merchant, and he also pays slightly more than other merchants for the items
he's willing to buy.

found here, and a lot of what you don't need can be sold here.

Since poison mushrooms can be found for free in the wilds, you can make a
bit of profit by then selling the poison to the alchemy storeroom.

IV. Achievements List
======================
Like many such games, HotK has a host of unlockable achievements that the
player can earn. Some are unlocked in the course of the game's plot, while
others are earned by performing optional side quests. The achievements can
be accessed from the game's main menu by clicking on the trophy icon; however,
be advised that some of them are hidden trophies and cannot be seen until
they have been earned. The ones related to hunting and gathering can give you
a clue as to how close you are to earning them; hover your mouse pointer
over the achievement image for an updated tally.
Should you complete the game and start a new one in the same save file, all
the achievements you earned in the previous game will carry over.
