[The screen is black. Suddenly, debris starts to rush by, including a monitor
showing Dr. Breen.]
BREEN: Tell me, Dr. Freeman, if you can. You have destroyed so much. What is
it, exactly, that you have created? Can you name even one thing? I thought
not.
[Alyx Vance is in the Citadel, futilely trying to protect herself from a Dark
Energy explosion. Time is frozen. Several Vortigaunts warp into the room. They
chant around the unaware Alyx. Two Vortigaunts grab Alyx's arms and she becomes
conscious.]
ALYX: Ohh!
[The Vortigaunts and Alyx disappear just as the explosion resumes. Meanwhile,
G-Man walks from a white room into a black room full of chanting Vortigaunts
who circle him. He looks around at them.]
G-MAN: We'll see about that.
[Gordon Freeman is buried under rubble.]
ALYX: He has to be somewhere around here. We've got to be close, just gotta be!
Any luck over there, Dog?
[Dog lifts some debris and partially uncovers Gordon. Dog peers in at Gordon
and starts working faster.]
ALYX: Dog, I think I found something.
[Dog lifts Gordon up.]
ALYX: Drop what you're doing and help me over here...
[Alyx gasps as she sees Gordon.]
ALYX: Oh my God! Gordon!
[Alyx hugs Gordon.]
ALYX: I was so worried...
[Alyx chuckles and looks around at the ruins.]
ALYX: Hey, the gravity gun! Give it to him, Dog.
[Dog holds the gravity gun in his paw. If Gordon waits, Alyx persists.]
ALYX: Go ahead - take the gravity gun.
[Gordon takes it. Dog shakes his body.]
ALYX: There, Gordon. Dog's happy to see you. I can tell. Okay, Dog, go get the
monitor set up so we can check in with my Dad. He must be worried sick about
us. He was so sure I wouldn't find you here.
[The burning Citadel shakes as Dog bounds up to a higher level of the ruined
building.]
ALYX: The Citadel's really coming apart. I still don't know how we got out of
there. The last thing I remember is... Breen falling, a huge explosion... and
then... I heard Vortigaunts. Next thing I knew, Dog was digging me out of the
rubble. It's all so strange... we should...
ELI: Alyx, come in!
[Alyx gasps.]
ALYX: It's my dad. We've been trying to reach him for hours.
[Alyx climbs up to Dog's position.]
ALYX: Wait till he hears that we found you. Come on!
ELI: Sweetheart, come in!
[Alyx looks at the static-filled monitor.]
ALYX: Dad? Dad? Are you there?
ELI: Alyx? Alyx, come in!
ALYX: Hold on a sec, there's so much interference. Hey, Dog. Give me a hand
with this.
[Dog acts as a conduit for the antenna.]
ALYX: Okay... little to the right... there we go. Hold it there! We got it.
[Eli's face materializes on the monitor.]
ALYX: Dad?
ELI: Alyx, where are you? Please, God, tell me you're out of the City!
ALYX: Well, not quite yet.
ELI: What?!
ALYX: But listen, Dad, we found him!
ELI: You found Gordon? I don't believe it. But listen, you two have to get out
of the city. The Citadel could blow at any moment!
[Dr. Kleiner pushes his way into the monitor frame, blocking out Eli.]
KLEINER: There's no question that it will, I'm afraid. Our remote sensors
indicate the process is accelerating toward a dark-energy flare.
ELI: Izzy...
KLEINER: Anyone left in the vicinity will be subjected to energetic events
whose effects are beyond my powers of speculation.
ELI: Isaac, please.
KLEINER: The ravages to cellular material are unimaginable.
ELI: Kleiner! Stop!
[Eli collapses.]
ALYX: Dad?!
[Dr. Kleiner helps Eli up.]
KLEINER: Oh dear, Eli, I'm sorry, but... surely there's no need for undue
alarm? Alyx is well out of harm's way by now.
ALYX: Well, actually, we're still at the Citadel.
KLEINER: What? Oh dear! But there's really no time! The core is exceedingly
close to collapse. Why, there's no way to get far enough without first...
well... nothing short of a direct intervention in the core could possibly
retard the reaction.
ELI: Izzy...
ALYX: You mean... going in?
KLEINER: Into the core, yes. But it's far too dangerous to consider. The
chamber will be bathed in radiation.
[Alyx turns to Gordon.]
ALYX: Well, you do have the Hazard Suit. If we found a way into the Citadel,
it's possible we could--
ELI: Alyx, no!
ALYX: But Dad...
ELI: Izzy, talk some sense into her!
KLEINER: I'm sorry, Eli, but I don't see any other way. It would help us
evacuate more citizens...
ALYX: We can do this, Dad.
ELI: Okay, Alyx, okay... okay. Just promise me... promise me that you won't
take a single unnecessary risk.
[Alyx touches the screen.]
ALYX: I promise. I love you.
ELI: I love you, too, baby. I'll be praying for you.
ALYX: Don't worry. I'll see you soon.
[Dog lets go of the antenna and the screens turns back to static.]
ALYX: Yeah... don't worry. Let's see if we can find a way into the Citadel from
somewhere along the rim.
[Alyx looks at wreckage that blocks their path.]
ALYX: Hmmm. Dog? A little help please?
[Dog raises the obstruction so Alyx and Gordon can pass under it.]
ALYX: Thanks...
[She strokes Dog and crouches under it.]
ALYX: Okay, boy. Pack up and meet us on the far side of this ridge.
[Alyx looks down at the wide abyss between them and the Citadel.]
ALYX: Whoa! What a drop... after you, Gordon. Careful.
[Gordon and Alyx tread along a crumbling ledge. Gordon eliminates obstacles in
their route with the gravity gun.]
ALYX: Why's Dog taking so long?
[She calls out for Dog.]
ALYX: Dog... Dog...
[She gazes upward and gasps.]
ALYX: Look out!
[A ship on fire blazes through the sky and crashes nearby.]
ALYX: Oh my God! Dog! Dog! Dog, are you all right?
[Dog leaps up to Alyx and Gordon.]
ALYX: Oh, thank God! You scared the hell out of me. Now stay with us and help
us find a way over.
[Alyx examines the Citadel. There's a large opening on the other side of the
immense rift.]
ALYX: I cannot believe we're trying to get back in that place. This isn't going
to be easy. Well, Dog, what do you think? Any ideas?
[Dog throws a piece of junk at the Citadel.]
ALYX: All right, Dog, that's not too helpful.
[Dog is sad.]
ALYX: There has to be a way to get across. But how? What about...
[Dog perks up.]
ALYX: Dog?
[Dog jumps and swings across broken girders.]
ALYX: Dog, where are you going? Was it something I said?
[Dog dives down and starts digging.]
ALYX: Huh? Dog, what are you... I think Dog needs a few bolts tightened.
[A red van comes hurtling from the debris pile.]
ALYX: Look out!
[The van lands on the ground and Dog returns to Alyx.]
ALYX: Dog... really... that was a little close. What's gotten into you, huh?
How exactly is this supposed to help us?
[Dog opens the driver's door.]
ALYX: What?
[The door comes off in Dog's paws.]
ALYX: Wait a minute... oh no. You're not serious?
[Dog nods through the car door's window.]
ALYX: Are you?
[Dog lets go of the door. Alyx leans against Dog.]
ALYX: Well, Gordon, unless you have a better suggestion... he is a robot. He's
done the math.
[She lowers her voice to speak to Dog.]
ALYX: You did do the math, right? Uh huh.
[Dog shakes his head. Alyx looks down at Dog.]
ALYX: I want you to get out of here as fast as you can. Go find Dad. We'll
catch up, don't worry.
[Dog abruptly embraces Alyx. They let go after a moment.]
ALYX: All right, all right. I'll miss you too.
[Alyx sits on the driver's seat.]
ALYX: Now don't worry about me. I'll see you soon. Get in the passenger side,
Gordon.
[If Gordon delays in entering, Alyx will keep talking.]
ALYX: Hurry up, before I lose my nerve.
[Dog grasps the vehicle when Gordon has entered.]
ALYX: Uhm, brace yourself, Gordon. Okay, Dog, let's do it. Before I change
my--
[The car tips vertically, and Gordon can see straight into the chasm.]
ALYX: Okay! Careful... hold on...
[Dog tosses the car.]
ALYX: Whoa!
[The car successfully passes into the Citadel.]
ALYX: Ow!
[Alyx catches her breath.]
ALYX: Whew. Uh, good throw, Dog! Now go, boy! Go on! You'll be fine, just...
[The car shakes.]
ALYX: Uh oh. What now?
[The ground opens up, and the car tilts down.]
ALYX: Whoa! Hold on!
[Gordon and Alyx rapidly move deeper through the Citadel's innards. The car
comes to a halt.]
ALYX: Whew. Hey, let's get off before the next ride starts.
[They get out onto a platform and ready their weapons. The car tumbles off the
platform.]
ALYX: Ohh! Holy crap!
[Gordon surveys the crash site. Multiple fires have broken out, and exposed
machinery bursts into flames. They're alone.]
ALYX: My God. This place is really coming apart.
[They move to an spacious area, where pods pass through.]
ALYX: This is unbelievable. I had no idea.
[Alyx looks over the edge at a broken pod rail.]
ALYX: Huh, what a drop. We've got to find a way down to the core. Huh, I wish
we had a map.
[They progress to another place. A blue forcefield impedes any further
movement. Behind a window, someone is toiling away on a console.]
ALYX: Oh my God. Stalkers. Well, they shouldn't bother us if we leave them
alone.
[Alyx walks to another console.]
ALYX: I'll just disable this field, and...
[The forcefield flickers on and off.]
ALYX: Damn. I can't get this down. Something's... it's that Stalker. He's
holding it from the other side. We don't have time to look for another way
around. How are we going to get through here?
[Alyx scrutinizes her surroundings. On the other side of the room, there are
mines sliding down a tube.]
ALYX: Rollermines. They could help us get out of here.
[Alyx charges a mechanism with her EMP Tool and a forcefield goes down.]
ALYX: Can you find where those rollermines are going? I've got an idea how to
use one here.
[Gordon retrieves a rollermine with the gravity gun and brings it to Alyx.]
ALYX: Oh, you found one. Dad taught me how to reset the targeting system on
these things. A little extra juice in the right spot and it's on our side. Hold
it out where I can work on it.
[Alyx urges Gordon to give her the rollermine.]
ALYX: Bring that over here and I'll rejigger it.
[Alyx modifies the rollermine with her tool.]
ALYX: There it is. It's a lot more unstable, but it should last long enough to
take out the Stalkers. Let it go now. It'll do the rest.
[Gordon releases the rollermine and it disables the Stalkers.]
ALYX: Okay. We can get through now.
[Alyx turns off the forcefield.]
ALYX: Let's go.
[Gordon and Alyx explore the disintegrating Citadel. Corpses, fires and smoke
are often seen. Some soldiers rush by on an adjacent level.]
ALYX: Ah, soldiers! Looks like they're too busy trying to get out of here to
worry about us.
[Gordon uses his gravity gun to move wreckage that obstructs their progress.]
ALYX: Good thinking!
[An explosion occurs in the narrow corridor and electricity bolts flash
briefly.]
ALYX: Ugh... well, that was random. Talk about unstable. I really don't think
we should hang around.
[The duo encounter a bridge made of light. A volatile vortex pops up next to
it, sucking in soldiers and debris for a moment before disappearing.]
ALYX: Holy crap... we've got to cross through that?
[The vortex keeps emerging and vanishing.]
ALYX: I'll be right behind you.
[Gordon and Alyx sprint across the bridge.]
ALYX: We made it!
[They journey on into a room with a transparent tube in the middle. Things
travel through the tube. Red lights shine from the walls.]
ALYX: What went on in here?
[They jump over a railing and into the room.]
ALYX: What the hell are those things? Maybe this console has some useful
information.
[Alyx accesses a console.]
ALYX: Let me see if I can pin down a path to the core.
[Dr. Breen appears on the monitor.]
ALYX: Breen!? But how...
BREEN: I can still deliver Earth, but not without your help. The portal
destination is untenable. Surely you can set the relay elsewhere. There's no
way I can survive in that environment.
ALYX: Oh... thank God... it's just an old recording.
BREEN: A host body? You must be joking, I can't possibly--
ALYX: Ugh.
BREEN: Oh all right, damn it, if that's what it takes!
ALYX: Let me see if we can find a map.
BREEN: Just hurry, he's right behind me! Oh shit!
[Dr. Breen's recording is replaced by a growling alien.]
ALYX: What the hell?
[Below Alyx's feet, a tray with a squirming unknown alien slides out and into
the tube.]
ALYX: What the hell is that?
[Several psychic blasts radiate from the bulky alien.]
ALYX: Ungh! Let's get out of here!
[Gordon and Alyx retreat to a doorway. The blasts stop.]
ALYX: Oh... what the hell was that thing? Whatever that was, it's gone now.
Let's get out of here.
[Alyx charges the door lock with her EMP Tool and the forcefield fades away.
Gordon continues into a room where he's unexpectedly trapped between two
forcefields. Alyx looks at him from behind one of the fields.]
ALYX: Gordon! What's going on in there!
[The gravity gun is torn out of Gordon's grip and is struck by four bolts.]
ALYX: Hey, it's doing something to the gravity gun.
[All of the fields shut off.]
ALYX: It looks like it did in Breen's portal reactor.
[Gordon picks up the improved gravity gun.]
ALYX: I'd say their security device backfired. It'll sure come in handy if it
stays that way.
[Gordon finds a broken light bridge and repairs it with his gravity gun.]
ALYX: Nice thinking.
[On the other side of the bridge, soldiers ambush Gordon.]
ALYX: Soldiers!
[Gordon and Alyx fight a number of soldiers through the decaying Citadel. While
they're on a bridge, a large dropship rises into view and drifts through a
narrow passageway.]
ALYX: Whoa! Did you see that?
[The dropship careens against the walls and crashes. Alyx finds a closed door
and hacks through it.]
ALYX: One second... got it!
[Gordon enters a narrow corridor. Sparks shoot from the ceiling and sparking
wires dangle above his head. Gordon moves past into a room with an elevator.]
ALYX: Looks like this could be a transport elevator to the core.
[The elevator doesn't budge when they step on it.]
ALYX: Hm... why isn't it moving? The power must be out.
[Gordon restores power by using his gravity gun to pick up and insert an energy
ball into a receptacle. They begin their descent.]
ALYX: Yeah, we must be on the right track. Look up! Watch out!
[Debris falls from higher levels. Gordon pushes the heavier stuff away with his
gravity gun.]
ALYX: Here comes more! Heads up!
[The elevator stalls.]
ALYX: What's wrong with this lift? Can you get it going again?
[Gordon slings another energy ball into another receptacle.]
ALYX: Great!
[More debris plummets.]
ALYX: Up there!
[The elevator stalls again.]
ALYX: Start her up again, Gordon. Do what you did last time.
[He does. The elevator starts to descend, then ascends and stops where it had
been.]
ALYX: What's going on?
[Gordon takes out a Stalker with an energy ball. Then he starts the lift
again.]
ALYX: Good job! Here we go!
[The elevator accelerates.]
ALYX: We're really moving now... I think I see a stop down below. Let's get off
there and see where it leads.
[As they approach the stop, several massive girders come tumbling down.]
ALYX: Look out! Run!
[Gordon and Alyx dash off the elevator. The beams smash the spot they were at
seconds ago.]
ALYX: This could be it, Gordon. Careful. Ah, more of 'em coming...
[More soldiers confront Gordon and Alyx. Alarms blare. Alyx runs for a
computer.]
ALYX: I don't get it. Why are they hanging around here? It looks like they were
deliberately trying to blow the reactor. But why?
[A panel opens up near Alyx's computer, revealing the deteriorating reactor.]
ALYX: Oh my God. It looks pretty far gone. I hope Dr. Kleiner was right about
this. Let's see if we can find a way through the control room.
[Alyx taps the computer and a door opens. They go through another room and Alyx
examines a transparent door. Behind the door is an elevator shaft.]
ALYX: The elevator's down in the core entry. Let me see if I can call it back
to this level.
[Alyx uses the computer in the room.]
ALYX: These readings are off the chart. I hope it's not too late to reengage
the containment field. Good thing you know what you're doing. Well... here's
your elevator.
[The elevator has arrived.]
ALYX: Gordon, I... I wish there was something else I could do to help.
[The elevator doors slide open. Gordon steps on the lift and the doors close.
Alyx presses her hand against the door.]
ALYX: Hurry back.
[The elevator goes down and Gordon steps into the reactor room.]
HEV SUIT: Warning: Hazardous radiation levels detected.
[After numerous skirmishes, Gordon manages to stabilize the core. He returns to
Alyx in the reactor observation room.]
ALYX: Gordon! You did it! The containment system's back in place. It won't last
forever, but at least we've bought a little time. While you were in there, I
did some poking around in the control data. They were trying to start a chain
reaction, all right... but destroying the Citadel is just a side effect.
[Alyx strides into the room with the elevator.]
ALYX: Since we took out Breen's reactor, this is the only way they have to send
a transmission packet back to wherever they came from. I can't tell what the
packet contains, but it's important enough that they're willing to sacrifice
the whole Citadel to send it off. We need to get it to my Dad and Dr. Kleiner
at the outpost right away. I've been pulling down a copy. Whatever it is, I
have a feeling it's bad news for all of us. There's something else. It's
Judith.
[Alyx starts playing a video on the monitor. Dr. Judith Mossman is standing in
a corridor of an arctic base.]
ALYX: Take a look.
JUDITH: I'm fairly sure I've pinned down the location of the Project. It's hard
to say how much of it might have survived intact, or whether there's anything
remaining that could compromise our work if it were discovered by the Combine.
We'll need to take a close look at it, of course, but I should be able to give
a better opinion within a few hours. If the site is where we think it is, then
it should be no more than...
[There's the sound of a large crash and the camera shakes. Judith looks
around.]
JUDITH: I'm going to cut this short. We may have been spotted.
[The camera tips over. It lands on the ground and keeps recording without
Judith.]
ALYX: Where the hell is she?
[The camera records soldiers shooting at something off-screen.]
SOLDIER: What the hell is that?
[The camera reveals that the enemy resembles a giant mechanical spider. It
bounds in through a hole in the base's wall.]
SOLDIER: Run for it!
[The transmission turns to static.]
ALYX: She's in serious trouble. We need to get this and the transmission packet
to my Dad. He'll know what to do with it. The packet's done copying.
[Alyx removes the packet out of the computer.]
ALYX: I've got it right here. Now let's get the hell outa here.
[An alarm sounds.]
ALYX: Uh oh... I think they felt that! I've secured an exit elevator.
[Alyx runs for the elevator.]
ALYX: It's this way! Come on!
[Alyx zaps a door lock. The door opens.]
ALYX: Run!
[Gordon and Alyx reach the elevator. The doors close.]
ALYX: Something tells me they don't want us reading their mail.
[The elevator descends.]
ALYX: This lift will take us to a train platform. If we can hitch a ride it
should take us straight out of the city. Hey, the gravity gun's back to normal.
Well... it was nice while it lasted.
[The elevator stops and Alyx and Gordon move down another corridor. A group of
soldiers shoot at them from behind. Alyx seals a door to stop their gunfire
from hitting them.]
ALYX: That'll slow them down, but not for long.
[Hostile rollermines spin toward Gordon.]
ALYX: Rollermines!
[Alyx reprograms the rollermines and uses a console. Through a window, she sees
soldiers preparing for them.]
ALYX: Company... they won't be expecting this. Get ready.
[The door opens and the converted rollermines assail the soldiers.]
ALYX: Look at 'em go!
[The soldiers die.]
ALYX: Coast is clear.
[Alyx enters the room. A train is on the side of the room, behind a
forcefield.]
ALYX: This is our train.
[Alyx disables the forcefield from a console.]
ALYX: Let's get in.
[Alyx heads into the train.]
ALYX: Come on, let's get in.
[The doors shut as Gordon enters the train. Soldiers shoot uselessly as the
train departs.]
ALYX: Well, that was a nice clean getaway. I don't know what's in this copy we
made, but they're not thrilled about us having it. You know, all things
considered, we're not doing too...
[A sound makes Alyx turn around to examine the train's interior. Small pods are
lined up on the wall. One of the pods is ajar, exposing a dormant Stalker.]
ALYX: Oh no... it's a Stalker car. God damn the Combine. This is what happens
to you if you resist. Or if you're just in the wrong place at the wrong time.
[Alyx moves to close the pod.]
ALYX: God, I hope you don't remember who you were. All right. Let's see where
this train is headed.
[Alyx heads to a console situated at the back of the train.]
ALYX: With any luck we should be well out of the city before it's too late.
[Alyx turns back to Gordon.]
ALYX: Thank God we're not on foot.
[She sighs.]
ALYX: Let's hope the worst is over. It looks like you've saved our lives
again.
[There's a screeching noise from outside the train. Sparks shoot into the
interior.]
ALYX: What's that?
[Another screech. Alyx checks the console.]
ALYX: Oh my God!
[The train violently shakes.]
ALYX: Brace yourself!
[The train crashes. Gordon is knocked out. He wakes up to the train resting on
an angle. The Stalkers have awakened and growl from their pods.]
ALYX: Oh God help.
[Alyx is pressed against a strut, pinned by a Stalker pod. The Stalker is still
in its pod and ferociously struggles against its restraints. Gordon uses his
gravity gun to shift the pod away from Alyx.]
ALYX: It's moving. That's it - keep pulling. Thank you.
[She squirms away, frightened. Finally, Gordon and Alyx leave the trainwreck.]
ALYX: Hold up a sec... I uh... I gotta catch my breath.
[Alyx slumps against a wall.]
ALYX: Okay... well... this might not be as easy as I thought. We're in the same
boat as the other evacuees now. On foot to a train station. Let's head for the
surface.
[Alyx unlocks another forcefield with her EMP Tool. Gordon navigates his way
between the derailed train and a tunnel.]
ALYX: Careful - I hear turrets.
[Gordon and Alyx battle headcrabs and zombies in a gloomy tunnel. A mounted gun
blinks red.]
ALYX: They've been here so long they're out of bullets.
[Gordon goes down an unlit side corridor.]
ALYX: I can't see a thing. I'm blind as a bat without that flashlight on.
[At the end of the corridor is an electronically locked door.]
ALYX: We need to get through that door. Damn... it's got a powered lock. How
are we gonna get this open? Let's see if we can find a powerbox.
[There's a grate covering a vent beside the door. Gordon removes the grate.]
ALYX: Hey - an airduct. I've heard stories about you and airducts. Dr. Kleiner
says whenever he locked himself out of his office, you and Barney used to
compete to see who could get in fastest without using a key.
[Gordon clambers through the vent system. He arrives on the other side, shoots
a lock on a door and opens the electronically locked door.]
ALYX: Nice job! Hey, and you found a gun!
[Gordon and Alyx continue into another murky tunnel with more zombies and
wrecked cars. There are now also antlion corpses.]
ALYX: Antlions, here? The Combine's defense field must have collapsed. Makes
sense if it was powered by the Citadel.
[Antlions and additional zombies attack the two humans. At the end of the
tunnel is the opening to another train.]
ALYX: Looks like we've found a troop train.
[Alyx sees an inert zombie wearing a Combine uniform.]
ALYX: What the hell is that? Hmmm. A Combine zombie. That's, that's like a...
ah... a Zombine! Right? Heh heh... Zombine, get it? Heh heh. O--kay.
[On the far end of the train, a Zombine stirs.]
ALYX: Crap! Look out, it's got a grenade!
[The Zombine stumbles toward them and the grenade detonates as it reaches a
barrier. Gordon and Alyx exit the troop train into another dim tunnel populated
with Zombines, barnacles and zombies. Gordon goes up a staircase to a car park.
Gordon tries to turn a wheel to open a gate, but antlions come out of a hole to
stop him.]
ALYX: Uh oh - the antlions are coming up here!
[Gordon solves the problem by using the gravity gun to position a car on top of
the antlion burrow.]
ALYX: Good idea, Gordon! I wouldn't have thought you could plug up the burrow
that way.
[Gordon successfully opens the gate. They head deeper into the car park,
encountering barnacles and headcrabs. More Zombines wait for them past a room
full of barnacles. Gordon and Alyx head up another staircase to a multilevel
parking garage. Gordon seals more antlion burrows, while Alyx defends them with
her gun.]
ALYX: I can get a better shot if you knock them over, Gordon.
[Gordon closes the final antlion hole.]
ALYX: That's the last burrow. Now we just gotta mop up the stragglers!
[They kill the remaining antlions.]
ALYX: That's better... I can hear myself think.
[Gordon raises a gate on the top floor of the garage. They head downstairs and
enter a series of fenced and flooded rooms.]
ALYX: Ugh. You're lucky you've got that hazard suit. This water's nasty. Got
room for two in there?
[Zombines lurk in the rooms. Gordon finds a door leading to higher and dry
ground.]
ALYX: Please let there be a way to the surface.
[Gordon shines a light on elevator doors.]
ALYX: I don't believe it, an actual elevator! I would have settled for stairs.
[Alyx activates the elevator. After a few seconds, there's a power outage.]
ALYX: You've got to be kidding... I've worked with electricity a time or two,
and I'm pretty sure this sparking wire must be connected to a power supply.
[Gordon searches the vast dark room.]
ALYX: Let's check out where that sparking wire leads.
[Gordon discovers the power supply and fixes it.]
ALYX: Hey, I hear the elevator - it's moving again.
[Alyx hears enemies approaching.]
ALYX: And here comes trouble.
[Alyx and Gordon have to exterminate more zombies while they backtrack and wait
for the elevator.]
ALYX: Where's that elevator? What's taking so long? Any time now...
[The elevator finally arrives.]
ALYX: It's here. Let's go!
[Gordon and Alyx enter the elevator. The gates close. Alyx pushes the button to
go up.]
ALYX: Let's get out of here!
[The elevator begins ascending. Alyx catches her breath.]
ALYX: That... was close.
[Alyx watches the floors go by through the gates. They're abandoned, except for
a stray Antlion and a zombie clawing at the elevator gate.]
[Alyx runs out of the elevator and looks outside.]
ALYX: Thank god - it's still day! Let's get out of here!
[Dr. Kleiner has usurped the City 17 annoucement system. A recording of his
speech will loop in the background during part of this level.]
KLEINER: Therefore, I repeat, evacuate City 17 at once if not sooner! I cannot
state this without enough undue emphasis!
[Alyx tugs at a locked lattice gate that thwarts her way to freedom.]
ALYX: Oh God no... no, no, no... it's locked. I can't believe this.
[Two humans idly chat somewhere above Alyx.]
MAN: Combine defenses used to keep these antlions away.
WOMAN: At least the antlions hate the Combine as much as they hate us.
ALYX: Hey, up there! Hello! Can you let us out of here? Hello! They can't hear
us, I guess. Can you see any way to get this open?
[If Gordon waits, Alyx takes a step back.]
ALYX: Hold on. There must be some way to open this gate.
[If Gordon continues to linger, Alyx gives a hint.]
ALYX: Looks like there used to be a crank that fit in here. I wonder if it's
still around here somewhere.
[Then another hint...]
ALYX: The handle's broken off. I wonder if it's still around someplace.
[Gordon can also try the broken payphones.]
ALYX: Those phones haven't worked in years.
[Gordon opens a gate leading to a storage closet crammed with boxes. He finds
an unused orange crank lying in the corner. Alyx sees it.]
ALYX: That's it! See if the crank still works.
[Gordon cranks it.]
ALYX: Come on, Gordon, crank that thing!
[The gate is open.]
ALYX: Great! Okay - let's get to the trainyard before the Citadel blows.
[They move up the stairs into a courtyard. Dr. Kleiner's speech is clearly
audible now.]
ALYX: Finally, fresh air...
[She notices the extensive damage done to their surroundings.]
ALYX: Oh my God... Striders really tore the hell out of this place...
[She glances at Dr. Kleiner's broadcast.]
ALYX: I've never been happier to see Dr. Kleiner!
[Gordon and Alyx walk down a neighborhood alley. Combine scanners find them and
a firefight ensues.]
ALYX: They're looking for something... probably us.
[A block away, Combine forces rappel down into the alleyway.]
ALYX: From the rooftops!
[Alyx and Gordon slay them.]
ALYX: I was hoping we'd get a bit farther before they noticed us again.
[They walk into a street, where humans fight off antlions. Gordon pushes cars
on top of antlion burrows with his gravity gun.]
ALYX: I can get a better shot if you knock them over, Gordon.
[More Combine rappel down to the street. In the end, all is quiet again.]
ALYX: Good job sealing the burrows.
[Gordon enters a disused restaurant where he bumps into more Combine. A mine is
detonated, and part of the restaurant is set on fire.]
ALYX: I'll cover the street while you figure this out.
[Gordon turns off the gas in the kitchen and the majority of the flames
dissipate.]
ALYX: Nicely done! Let's head upstairs.
[Gordon goes upstairs, which was previously blocked by the fire. More zombies
lie in wait on the upper floor. A dropship flies by. Gordon is about to leave
through the restaurant's backdoor.]
ALYX: Gordon - hold up a second. We can't get through here while that sniper's
covering the street.
[Gordon throws a projectile through the sniper's window. The sniper kicks the
bucket.]
ALYX: Nice toss, Gordon. That sniper almost took my head off. Let me climb up
and take a look at what we're walking into.
[Alyx climbs up a structure and through a window. The street is barricaded with
a high wall at this point and there's no obvious way to get past it from ground
level.]
ALYX: Uh oh... they've got the street fortified up ahead. You run point, okay?
I'll cover you from up here till you reach the far end. When the coast is
clear, I'll catch up. Okay, looks like I can get that ladder down to you. Let
me shoot out the latch. I might be a little rusty with this rifle...
[Alyx aims the sniper rifle and successfully shoots the latch.]
ALYX: Hah! Nope, guess I'm not.
[Gordon climbs up and goes over the barricade. Alyx helps Gordon out with her
rifle. Gordon goes through an apartment building and into a different street.
Combine, zombies and antlions all try to slaughter Gordon. He discovers a
Combine garrison and covers Alyx while she follows him.]
ALYX: Phew - glad that's over.
[She's about to access a console to disable the garrison's forcefield when
there's a loud rumble.]
ALYX: Ow! Oh God... looks like the reactor's back on track for a meltdown. That
transmission's going out after all.
[The Citadel rumbles again.]
ALYX: Huh... Whoa!
[Alyx returns to the console.]
ALYX: I'd like to find another way around these buildings, but we really don't
have time.
[Alyx turns off the forcefield.]
ALYX: Okay, let's get in. Come on.
[They infiltrate the Combine building and attack Combine forces.]
ALYX: Whoof... I think we just broke about fifty Combine regulations.
[Beep.]
ALYX: What's that beeping sound.
[Beep. Beep. Then several beeps close together. Red lights flash on two
doors.]
ALYX: Get away from the doors!
[The doors blow apart in a contained explosion. Combine rush out and exchange
fire with Gordon and Alyx. Eventually, the protagonists make it to the street.
Gordon closes up more antlion burrows and defeats a large antlion guard. Alyx
helps Gordon fight off more Combine and scanners.]
ALYX: They're coming from the rooftops!
[After defeating their enemies, Gordon and Alyx duck into a hole in a damaged
building. There's another locked door that Alyx cannot unlock.]
ALYX: Oh man... another powered lock...
[Gordon ducks into a nearby air vent.]
ALYX: Your vent-crawling skills seem to be in high demand today, Gordon.
[Gordon travels through the duct system until one duct collapses. He's landed
in a room full of flammable barrels and laser tripmines, and has to get into an
elevator on the other side of the room. When he does this, the elevator
immediately and rapidly descends into a deep pool of water. He extricates
himself from the elevator, then has to clear out two more rooms of barrels and
tripmines. Finally, he unlocks the door for Alyx.]
ALYX: There you are. I thought you might have forgotten about me.
[The two of them proceed deeper into the building, where there are more laser
tripmine traps. There are two possible exits to the room. One is blocked by a
forcefield. The other way out is up a staircase, behind a closed door with a
beeping red light.]
ALYX: Uh-oh... here we go again.
[The door is blasted open. A flaming barrel is tossed down the stairs, followed
by Combine. Behind the door are some supplies and the power outlet for the
forcefield. Gordon shuts off the power and heads outside once more. Combine
assault him all around the street.]
REBEL: Hey, over here!
[A male rebel stands in a doorway of a building. He urges Gordon to follow him
in.]
ALYX: What are you still doing here? Everyone should clear out of the city.
REBEL: The Combine's not making it easy. We're trying to get enough people
together to force our way through to the trainstation. People are meeting up in
a safe house nearby.
ALYX: Can you take us there?
REBEL: You bet. Let's go. This way.
[The three jog through a back alley and drop down into a courtyard.]
REBEL: I don't think this war's ever gonna end.
[They reach a locked door.]
REBEL: Hey, it's me. Open the door.
[A slot in the door opens.]
REBEL #2: What's the password?
REBEL: I'm not even gonna tell you to shut up.
REBEL #2: Come on in.
[The door swings open to an old apartment building. Dr. Kleiner's broadcast is
still playing on a small television in the room. One of the rebels stares at
Alyx.]
REBEL #3: You're Kleiner's daughter, right?
ALYX: Um... no, my dad's Odessa Cubbage.
[Dr. Kleiner recommends people to procreate.]
ALYX: Uh, is Dr. Kleiner really telling everyone to... 'get busy'?
[If Gordon unplugs the television, Alyx reacts.]
ALYX: You're right - we don't have time to watch TV.
[Gordon and Alyx walk up several flights. There's a sudden explosion. A burning
pod brimming with headcrabs crashes on the stairs.]
ALYX: What the hell! Let's find another way up.
[Gordon opens the closest door and the two humans struggle against Zombines
throughout the building. They head up to the top floor and a door slot opens.
Former Black Mesa security guard Barney Calhoun looks at them on the other
side.]
BARNEY: Gordon? Alyx! I don't believe it! How the hell did you get out of the
Citadel?
[Barney unlocks and opens the door.]
ALYX: We're not exactly sure. All I know is the Vortigaunts had something to do
with it. But what about you, Barney?
BARNEY: I'm doing okay, just going crazy trying to--
REBEL #4: They found us!
[A scanner is outside a window. A rebel shoots it down swiftly.]
BARNEY: Oh hell, Gordon! Were you followed again?
ALYX: We stole some information from the Citadel on our way out. I don't know
what it is yet, but it's important enough that they've been hounding us the
whole way here.
BARNEY: Well that puts the pressure on. Look, we gotta get moving. You guys
know about the evacuation trains, right?
ALYX: Yeah.
BARNEY: Yeah, well, we've been planning to make a push on the trainstation. Now
it looks like we're gonna have to cut a path through every chickenshit metrocop
who's having second thoughts about defending City 17.
ALYX: If Gordon and I took a separate route, we could draw the Combine away
from you. That'd give you a chance to get the trains filled up before we get
there.
BARNEY: Really? Well, if you say so. Now, come here. Look over here.
[Barney and Alyx walk to a raised bridge. If lowered, the bridge could reach
the buildings on the other side of the street.]
BARNEY: Okay. Across this bridge, over the rooftops, is a safe path to the
station.
[Barney takes a crowbar out of a crank that lowers the bridge.]
BARNEY: You two head that way. I'll hit the streets and round up everyone who's
been waiting. We'll meet you there.
ALYX: Sounds good. Let's go.
BARNEY: Hey, Gordon, before you go. I was getting tired of carrying this
around.
[Barney offers the crowbar to Gordon.]
BARNEY: Listen, I don't have many more of these so... try not to lose this one,
okay?
[He chuckles and tosses the crowbar to Gordon.]
BARNEY: Go on across, Gordon. She's waiting for you. You lucky dog you.
[Gordon travels across the bridge.]
BARNEY: See you at the station!
[Gordon starts moving through more of the ruined buildings, when he hears a
sound.]
ALYX: It's a gunship.
[The gunship fires on Gordon's position.]
ALYX: Get back!
[Gordon and Alyx trek through buildings, defeating headcrabs and Zombines along
the way. They end up in a neglected hospital.]
ALYX: Hey, a hospital! Keep an eye out for medical supplies.
[Outside, the gunship keeps shooting at them through the windows. More Combine
and zombies wait in the hospital corridors. Gordon enters the hospital's wooden
attic, where he finally puts an end to the gunship with an RPG.]
ALYX: Wow... I mean, holy... that was... Jesus, Gordon, you're a real terror.
[Alyx pauses.]
ALYX: Think it's dead? Maybe you should whack it with the crowbar just in
case.
[Gordon's ready to exit the attic when they notice a beeping red light on a
door.]
ALYX: Oh God... not again...
[Combine come through the door. Combine die. The next obstacle in the hospital
is a forcefield.]
ALYX: So much for medical supplies. I found a shotgun!
[Alyx disables the forcefield. The hospital corridors and rooms are teeming
with zombies and Combine. In one of the larger rooms for surgery, there's a
huge tear in the floor leading to the basement.]
ALYX: After you...
[Gordon goes in. The floor caves in and he plunges into a pool of filthy water
in the subbasement.]
ALYX: Oh no! Gordon! Are you okay? Oh God! More zombies!
[While Alyx deals with zombies, Gordon reasons out how to get up to the
basement. The two of them meet up halfway.]
ALYX: Sorry about leaving you alone down there, Gordon. I got a bit swamped. I
see you did all right without me.
[The reunited pair move on to a corridor. They drop into another room where the
ceiling has given way. The duo shoot headcrabs and zombies through broken
windows. Alyx senses more enemies on the way.]
ALYX: Here they come!
[A door ruptures and more zombies swarm in.]
ALYX: They're through the door!
[Once that's over, Gordon investigates more of the grimy hospital.]
ALYX: What kind of hospital is this?
[Down a corridor, there are a couple of turrets behind a forcefield. There are
also zombies hiding in the rooms along the corridor. Gordon uses the gravity
gun to unplug the forcefield. Then Gordon and Alyx head down another
corridor.]
[Gordon opens a door and hears Dr. Kleiner's broadcast again.]
ALYX: Yes! The trainstation!
[A Combine sensor flashes. Dr. Kleiner's broadcast is disconnected.]
ALYX: Oh boy... they're onto us. Better find Barney and get moving.
[Gordon steps outdoors. There's a parking lot down a small hill. Barney strides
out from behind an overturned truck.]
BARNEY: There you are! I wondered if you were gonna make it in time.
ALYX: Sorry to keep you waiting. The Combine's on our tail. What's the plan?
BARNEY: I'm sending folks out in groups. Like I said before, if you can keep
them safe and provide cover, we might actually stand a chance of reaching the
escape trains.
[They stroll down the hill.]
ALYX: Sounds good. Send out the first group!
BARNEY: Here we go.
[Barney heads inside a nearby building to assemble a group of four.]
CITIZEN: Well, Gordon Freeman! And about time, too.
[Gordon and Alyx lead the evacuees across the parking lot and into the train
station. They encounter no resistance.]
ALYX: Well, that wasn't so hard. We should have brought everyone over at once.
[Alyx decides to operate an Emplacement Gun in the train station.]
ALYX: Go back and get another group. I'll stay here and guard the gate.
[Unfortunately, Gordon must deal with Combine scanners as he returns for the
second group. A dropship releases Combine forces that Gordon has to deal with.
Every time Gordon drops citizens off and takes a new group, more Combine have
arrived.]
BARNEY: Fantastic ass-kicking, Doc!
[After sending another group off at the train, Gordon obliterates an APC in the
parking lot. Gordon then takes another group from Barney.]
BARNEY: Now that's the Gordon Freeman I know!
[After Gordon goes through the same routine, Barney guides the last refugees to
the train.]
BARNEY: To the trains, people! We'll make sure you get there safe and sound!
[Alyx abandons her mounted gun to join Barney's group. Once they've gathered in
the room just outside of the train, Alyx uses her EMP Tool to zap the doors
shut.]
ALYX: That should keep them off our backs for a while.
BARNEY: You guys coming?
ALYX: Go on, Barney! They're not after you. Gordon and I will draw their
attention while you get the others away from here. We can grab another train
once you're clear.
BARNEY: Okay then... don't take too long about it, yeah?
ALYX: Here, let's open up this next track.
[Barney heads into the train, while Alyx and Gordon go into an adjacent room.]
ALYX: Bye, Barney! Good luck!
BARNEY: See ya when I see ya!
[The train departs. Gordon and Alyx go through passages and rooms bordered by
chain-link fences.]
ALYX: I'll get a head start on the next train. No time to lose.
[Gordon turns a crank to open a roll up door. Alyx crawls into the next room. A
Strider comes down the train tracks. Gordon must release the crank to battle
it. Combine forces have also dropped in.]
ALYX: Gordon, be careful!
[Gordon ultimately vanquishes the Strider with an RPG. Alyx catches up to him
on the ground.]
ALYX: Fantastic job, Gordon! You're my new hero! Ha, I don't believe it. I
think we're actually gonna make it out of here... quick, now... let's get the
train moving.
[Alyx works on a console for a moment.]
ALYX: Jump on, Gordon. I'm right behind you.
[Gordon and Alyx board the train. After a moment, the train begins to move away
from the station.]
ALYX: Here we go. We did it, Gordon. Here we go. We did it, Gordon.
[The train station is in the distance. As they enter a pitch-black tunnel, a
Combine ship crashes right behind them. As the train picks up speed, Gordon can
see the Citadel is about to meltdown. Beams of light travel to the top of the
Citadel and into the distorted sky.]
ALYX: Oh my God... the transmission's going out.
[There are several bursts of white light. Several pods soar out from the
Citadel's location, and Gordon is struck by psychic blasts from two of the
pods. Pieces of detritus whip past the train. A shockwave approaches.]
[Dr. Kleiner gives a speech on the public address monitors. This video can be
seen and heard throughout Chapter 4: Urban Flight. He starts his recording by
trying to get his pet headcrab, Lamarr, out of the way.]
Careful, Lamarr!
These lamps are quite hot!
Ahem... is this on? Yes? Very well, I... I am not much of a public speaker, but
I'll... I'll do my best.
Fellow citizens... residents of City 17 and environs... by which I mean
sentient residents, of course, human and otherwise, although I believe there is
little need to explain recent developments to our vortigaunt allies...
At any rate... first, as a matter of great urgency, if you find yourself still
within the confines of City 17, you are well advised to leave the city at once
by the fastest means available to you. We have restored service to much of the
commuter transport system in order to carry citizens out of the city as quickly
as possible. We have also established camps and triage areas in the surrounding
environs.
I repeat, you must evacuate the city at once.
While there was certainly a great benefit in destroying the Citadel's teleport
core, we have detected one rather unfortunate side effect.
It would appear an inevitability that very soon now, the Citadel will be
consumed in a destructive event whose magnitude I cannot currently estimate
with any certainty, except to say that it will almost certainly irradiate an
area of many miles' radius.
Therefore, I repeat, evacuate City 17 at once if not sooner! I cannot state
this without enough undue emphasis!
On a lighter note, if you are already in one of our designated safe zones, I
feel obliged to point out that a more fortunate side-effect of the reactor's
destruction is the complete removal of the Combine's reproductive suppression
field.
Previously, certain protein chains important to the process of embryonic
development were selectively prevented from forming. This is no longer the
case. For those so inclined, now would be an excellent time for procreation.
Which is to say, in layman's terms, you should give serious consideration to
doing your part for the revival of the species. We must make the most of the
time we have, as it is by no means certain how much time we have secured
ourselves before the Combine attempt to restore their dominion, as they
certainly shall.
Since this is in fact the first opportunity we have had to speak openly of the
baleful influence of the Combine, there is much ground to cover - and in fact I
hope to institute a series of useful bulletins in the days ahead. However, for
now, we will have to content ourselves with some relatively meager exposition.
The destabilization of the City 17 reactor has had repercussions that were not
entirely unexpected, although we hardly dared speak this hope ahead of time.
The destructive pulse forced a damper on the entire network of linked Citadel
reactors. Thus, for the time being, I believe that all Combine portals have
failed completely, as well as all communication systems based on that
technology.
In short, the Combine are completely cut off. Combine forces currently
stationed on Earth are now isolated units. Stranded.
However, this is most likely a temporary state of affairs. As we once learned
to our dismay, even the relatively tiny fracture at Black Mesa gave our enemies
an opening which they were able to force ever wider, as they poured through in
greater and greater numbers.
In addition to the completely xenotheric species, there are many modified
post-human allies still remaining on Earth who will be doing their utmost to
re-establish lines of communication and supply with the larger forces.
Even so, there is greater reason for hope now than at any time in the past
decade.
We have made, in secret, several technological advances which we will do our
best to deploy in advance of the Combine's return.
We continue to diligently assemble and train a new generation of scientists and
technicians.
For what the Combine fear the most is not any tangible human weapon, but our
will, our intellect, our ability to respond selectively and rationally to every
terror they turn against us.
We place our firmest hope in the human spirit, even knowing how easily it may
be shattered. We have all seen friends and family crushed by the Combine. Some
of our neighbors have allowed themselves to be co-opted, and purged of their
humanity, by the military machine.
And those who resisted have met a most terrible fate.
Still, I cannot overstate how important it is that we retain our humanity. Only
this will allow us to hold together as we must for their inevitable return...
and what is certain to be unimaginable retaliation.
And... oh yes, if you missed any part of this message, it will loop repeatedly
until there is no point in looping it any longer.
I apologize for any inadvertent errors or omissions. As you can imagine, we
have had scarcely time to record, let alone rehearse-
What's that, Eli? Oh, right.
This has been Dr. Isaac Kleiner, formerly of Black Mesa, now simply a citizen,

like all of you, of Earth.
Let me just add to all those who can hear me now, as we struggle out of the
shadow of our malefactors, welcome back to the light.

If Alyx is in the dark, she will sometimes groan like a zombie, then she laughs
and says "Gotcha!"
