TABLE OF CONTENTS [S0TC]
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Introduction [S1IN]
What this guide is about, and why I wrote it.
2. Stats [S2ST]
Breaks down the "Performance" chart's stats.
3. Vehicles [S3VE]
The meat of the guide, since a walkthrough doesn't apply. All stats for
all vehicles, plus how to get them, and tips for when and how to use each
vehicle.
4. Race Guide [S4RG]
Lists races for all zones, plus which vehicles can be used and other info.
*Not a walkthrough, but provides tips for tricky races, as well as all
important details on each race. This is the "other meat" of the guide.
5. Quick Reference [S5QR]
List of all vehicles in the order the game uses.
6. FAQ [S6FQ]
A catch-all section for any tips, notes, advice, or anything that doesn't
quite fit elsewhere.
7. Achievements [S7AC]
A list of all the Xbox360 achievements and related tips. These are at the

1. INTRODUCTION [S1IN]
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As of June 24th, 2009, there were no guides whatsoever for Fuel on GameFAQs,
and only scattered info here and there elsewhere on the Web. I think that's a
shame, since Fuel is really a great game, even though it doesn't have all that
much to offer compared to other games that came out around the same time, like
Prototype. Sure, this is a racing game at heart, but I've always wanted a
racing game where you could leave the races behind for a while and enjoy your
hard-earned vehicles the way you WANT to enjoy them: on the open road! Fuel has
one thing that other open-world games with vehicles don't have, and that's the
peace of mind that you don't have anything to worry about while you're not
racing. No health bar, no continues, no annoying NPC friends calling you to go
bowling (Niko, cousin!!), and hardly even any AI traffic to get in your way!
You can just sit back and drive, and drive, and drive. And I think that's
awesome. It's like the perfect road trip, except that you can get up to go pee
in the comfort of your own home whenever you need to!
So, in a sense, this guide is my own little tribute to an amazing and
underrated game. Plus, I like helping people out. Check out my other guides at
GameFAQs:
BioShock for Xbox360
Dead Space for Xbox360 (Incomplete)

Feel free to contact me with any sane questions, comments, feedback, or
constructive criticism. Keep it relevant to the guide or game, please. Don't
bug me about typos, grammar, formatting, or other trivial things. If you spot a
glaring error or misinformation, let me know and I'll fix it. Don't be offended
if I don't respond to your email. Don't be surprised if you don't see yourself
credited for a fix or submission -- there may have been a dozen other emails
pointing out the same thing, and no one person deserves the credit. I'll try to
remember to at least note when something was provided via email, especially
important stuff. DO NOT EMAIL ME WITH A LARGE CHUNK OF TEXT AND EXPECT ME TO
COPY-PASTE YOUR EMAIL AS AN ENTIRE SECTION IN MY GUIDE. Most of this guide is
simple grunt work and putting information down in an organized and easy to read
manner. Any large amount of missing information is going to be covered through
updates eventually. That information is missing because I simply haven't had
time to add it in yet. I don't need a massive list of all the cars or all of
the Gear, or coordinates for every Livery and Vista Point. I can do all that on
my own if I want it in my guide. While I do appreciate the enthusiastic
attempts at assistance, I'd like this guide to be largely the result of my own
work and effort. Thanks, but no thanks!
Oh, and do mention "Fuel" in the email subject line, if you do send some
electronic correspondence my way. You might not get a response, or even a
read, if you don't.
NOTE: Guide is currently a Work In Progress. I know a lot of things are
missing, inaccurate, or possibly even wrong. I'm updating this guide this one
last time for now (this updated version you're reading right now!). I'm going
on an indefinite hiatus with this guide. It's mostly done (unlike my Dead Space
guide...). There's no race info for Rainier Peak, and the last 5 or 6 vehicles
are not listed in the Vehicle secion, and only partiall listed in the Quick
Reference. Why am I stopping now, when I'm so close to the end? Truth is, I'm
really not that good at this game, and I need 19 Stars to unlock Rainier Peak
at this point. I just don't have the patience or the free time to do it right
now -- I just started 2 summer classes the day before this update. Plus, I'm so
sick of playing this game since I've put in well over 100 hours, possible 200
or more, I don't even know. I'm sending the game back in to GameFly so I can
play something a little less frustrating... I'm thinking Prototype. If you
really like my guide, send me an email! It might motivate me to rent the game
again and push for the last bit.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2. STATS [S2ST]
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Not everyone has been playing racing game since the days of Pole Position or
F-Zero, or Grand Turismo, Need for Speed, Midnight Club, or the countless other
racing games. Plus, not everyone knows a lot about cars, either, so here is a
breakdown of what the stats mean for the vehicles, and what they mean for your
success in the game!
A short description of vehicle stats.
Speed - Top speed a vehicle can reach in its preferred terrain
Accel. - How quickly the vehicle speeds up
Grip - How well the tires grip the road or terrain (responsiveness)
Brake - Usefulness of handbrake in powersliding or slowing down
Reliab. - Damage it can take until you "crash" or respawn
Asphalt - How well the vehicle handles on paved roads
Offroad - How well the vehicle handles on grass/dirt/sand/etc.
A few notes about the stats:
SPEED is somewhat arbitrary. Just because two vehicles have the same speed
rating does NOT mean they are equally as fast. Usually, you can't compare
vehicles of different classes (Buggy speed to Bike speed), but for the most
part with same-type vehicles the speed is a good indicator of which will be
faster on IDEAL terrain. A vehicle with 3 bars of Speed and full Offroad will
go MUCH faster through fields than a vehicle with 4 or more bars of Speed and
full Asphalt through fields. For most vehicles, even a lot of full Offroad
vehicles, you will lose some speed when going through grass, snow, sand, or
other "rough" terrain. Dirt roads typically allow the same speed as paved ones,
except you will slip around a bit more, and your acceleration might suffer.
ACCELERATION is completely separate from speed, obviously. Just because your
vehicle is fast, doesn't mean it's gonna go from 0 to 60 in less than a second.
Some of the faster vehicles are very slow to accelerate, like the monster
trucks. It may take them 15 seconds or more to even get close to top speed.
Acceleration may also affect how well you maintain (or even increase) your
speed when powersliding through turns. In scientific terms, "acceleration"
actually includes any change in direction or speed.
GRIP, like speed, seems to be only relevant when on proper terrain, so
Offroads and Asphalts with low Grip will have even worse grip on the opposite
terrain. Actually, it seems that even vehicles with high grip will handle very
poorly in the wrong terrain. For example, the City Hunter has maximum Grip and
Asphalt, but when you go into offroad terrain with it, it slips around like
it's on ice. Inversely, though, pretty much any vehicle will perform decently
on paved road, but always keep Grip in mind.
BRAKE seems to be related to how the vehicle responds when you hit the
handbrake (the X button on the Xbox360 or Square on the PS3). Anyone familiar
with racing should know what Powersliding is -- when you hand brake and turn,
sliding sideways, so that you're already facing the direction you're turning to
when you get to the corner. This is an essential skill to learn when playing a
game like Fuel, and if you don't master it, you'll be flying off the road and
shooting over cliffs all the time. Brake also is an idicator of how quickly
your vehicle can reach a full stop, and how well you will be able to control
the vehicle while braking and decelerating (slowing down).
RELIABILITY is simply how much of a beating a vehicle can take before it is
rendered not drivable. You should always be careful, though, because it's
rather unpredictable trying to figure out what obstacles are safe to hit
(ramps), which are safe to pass through (shrubs), and which are brick walls
(trees, some buildings, rocks). Also, always be careful when approaching ramps
at an angle, as the game likes to count that as a damaging impact... Aside from
actual damage, Reliablility also determines what type of obstacles will slow
you down or stop you, and by how much. As an example, a Bike will smack into
something and stop, but a Truck will likely just plow right through (low and
high Reliability, respectively).
ASPHALT and Offroad should be self explanatory. Just keep in mind that there
are only 3 types here: full Asphalt, full Offroad, and the 50/50 category,
All-Terrain. Again, most vehicles perform acceptably on pavement, but there's
a reason why some vehicles are full Asphalt or full Offroad! Also keep in mind,
Offroad vehicles usually have much lower Speed than Asphalt vehicles, but later
in the game you will indeed find some very fast Offroad vehicles.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
3. VEHICLES [S3VE]
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What good is a racing game without variety in vehicles? Like guns to a shooter
game, or combos, specials, and supers to a fighting game, vehicle are the
backbone of any racing game. Fuel has 75 vehicles total, one of which is a
secret car which is very hard to find, but is completely optional.
Vehicles are broken down into 6 basic types:
Bike - Two wheels (most of the time). Dirt bikes and city bikes.
Quad - Four wheels, but open to the elements like a bike.
Buggy - Four wheels (mostly) like a car, but built loose and rugged.
Muscle Car - Four wheels, but built tight and aerodynamic. Usually very fast.
SUV - Bigger than a Muscle Car or a Buggy, smaller than a Truck.
Truck - Monster trucks and other huge beasts. Often 4+ wheels. Tough.
Unlocking vehicles can happen in a variety of ways. Most often, you must
simply win enough Stars to unlock a Special Camp (a zone with 6 Career Races).
After this, you usually will see the new vehicles available for purchase from
your menu.
The vehicles that are not purchased are either Mavericks released onto the
backroads after you win specific races, or free Reward cars that are
automatically added to your roster of vehicles after you win the right race.
You must locate Mavericks by looking for their arrow marker on the map, drive
out to their location, and bump into them, in order to add them to your Garage.

Sludgeray [V09]
Type: Bike

Comment: Despite it's abysmal Stats, this is not a bad Bike to start out on.
You won't use it outside of Challenges after you get the Riot or other faster
and handier Bikes. Good to get accustomed to the controls with this one, or
take a quick breather between the first few Career Races or Challenges, but
don't let it slow you down!
>>>Tsunami Reef Garage-------------------
These vehicles are available to purchase once you have gotten 4 Stars and
unlocked "Tsunami Reef" zone.
Riot [V10] $4145
Type: Bike
Speed *
Accel. **

Comment: Should replace the Sludgeray immediately. A nice average dirtbike
that may see use through the first half of the game if the newer dirt bikes
are too fast or unruly for you.
Twin Freaks [V58] $4150
Speed ***
Accel. **
Grip ***
Brake *
Reliab. *
Asphalt ***
Offroad ***
Comment: Although it technically does have 4 wheels, this is definitely a Bike
and not a Quad. It's an okay bike for crusing around through mixed terrain,
but it's not very good for actual races. Take sharp turns with caution, since
you can't lean this Bike quite the same as the others.
City Hunter [V17] $4240
Speed ****

Comment: Meh, not bad. You'll probably get this first before any of the other
"road" Bikes, but you probably won't need to use it. If you hold out for the
Afterburner (a Maverick), you probably won't use the City Hunter by choice.

Shuriken [V11] $12545

Comment: Basically a slight upgrade to the Riot. Do note it's got slightly
less Grip but more Brake and Acceleration than the Riot, but that evens out;
quick to start, quicker to stop, and easier to slide around sharp corners.
Just try not to slide off any cliffs!

Comment: I was really, really impressed with this thing at first, but after I
tried using it in a variety of Career Races, I noticed how difficult it is to
turn properly. Of course, it's a very long bike, but it tends to handle turns
more like a road bike than a dirt bike (ie, it only turns well when going at
faster speeds). While I wholly recommend this bike for long, drag-race style
races, the long and straight ones, you should probably leave this fellow in
the Garage if you're on a winding/twisty course.

Offroad *
Comment: This is the first Maverick in the game, and as such will probably be
vastly superior to any of the other vehicles you have at the time. It is
worthless offroad, but it is the best road vehicle you will be able to get
for a while, except for the little fact that ONE small crash can cause you to
respawn. Stay on the road! Even a short slip into the gravelly shoulder can
cause you to lose your place in the race.
Banshee [V19] (Drownington Cove: "Drowned City Run")

Comment: Should feel right off like a mild improvement to the Afterburner.
Just keep in mind that the extra Speed and Acceleration mean it will be a
little more unruly and unpredictable during tense moments. It doesn't seem
to turn as smoothly as some of the other road bikes.

Comment: This is an All-Terrain dirt bike, like a two-wheeled, much better
version of the Twin Freaks. I really like this Bike, and unless you're
sticking to the road and want to hit high speeds with a city bike, then this
Bike will serve you very well. This Bike is also exceptionally useful for
speeding through heavily forested Offroad areas, as it is fast, maneuverable,
and you can slip between and around the trees with little effort... Just
don't HIT the trees.

you just want to do some Free Ride exploring but don't like the starters.

Deathwing [V34] $4410
Type: Quad

Offroad ***
Comment: My favorite of the earlier vehicles. It's perfect for nearly all
types of terrain, and is great for free ride. If you can pick the Deathwing
in a race, I'd fully recommend picking it (though there are exceptions)!
Mudblaster [V31] $4395
Speed *
Accel. **
Grip **
Brake **
Reliab. **
Asphalt *
Offroad ******
Comment: I prefer the Mosquito over this one. The increased Acceleration here
doesn't really come into play since it's so damn slow anyway. If you crash a
LOT in the offroad terrain, this may actually be a better option for you than
the Mosquito, though. Slow and steady wins the race, right?
Fanatic [V37] $4435
Speed ****
Accel. **
Grip ***

Offroad *
Comment: One of the few "road" Quads. I don't see much point in driving a Quad
on the road, but for races that demand pavement, what are you gonna do?

unlocked "Drownington Cove" zone.
Quadram [V32] $13270
Speed **
Accel. ***
Grip **
Brake ***

Asphalt *
Offroad ******
Comment: You can probably leave the Mosquito and the Mudblaster behind once
you get this one. If you're desperate for Grip, go back to the Mosquito, but
remember you're losing some Asphalt handling in the trade-off.
Speed Demon [V38] $13360

Comment: Basically an upgraded Fanatic. Again, a "road" Quad, which is really
only useful in races that demand you drive a road Quad. If you like speeding

Comment: Yeah, it's got 6 wheels. I like this Quad. It's surprisingly fast and

any races yet.

Comment: This thing is blazing fast for an Offroad vehicle! On grass, you can
go from 0 to 60 in less than 3 seconds, can hit a 100+ MPH on roads, and can
maintain at least 90 MPH through rough terrain. If you've been finding it
tedious to hunt down Liveries, Vista Points and such, the Komodo will make
short work of those long trips. The medium Speed rating really only means
that it maxes out at around 110 MPH downhill on ideal conditions, but 110 MPH
is far more than sufficient for a Quad! While the Deathwing is my favorite
Quad early in the game, this bad boy brings up some tough competition.

Comment: The only thing "psychotic" about this Buggy is its agonizingly slow

that you'll never be going all that fast. Get the Avenger or the Mudhog and
be done with this fellow -- except in Challenges where it's your only option.

Comment: This will probably be your first new Buggy. Don't underestimate its
usefulness early in the game, but you'll probably ditch it for the Spider
Wraith or pretty much any other Buggy after a while. The Psychotic Fox
handles much, much better, but is slow as all heck, making the Avenger a lot
more appealing on roads and longer trips. Tends to over-rev often when on
inclines or slippery terrain, which is annoying.

this over a Muscle Car offroad any day. The Spider Wraith, though SLIGHTLY
slower, is a much better choice overall. But hey, I'm just offering advice,

fast. Two, it can maintain its speed reasonably well when slipping onto the

Bullet. This is your absolute typical slip-n-slide Muscle Car. Good luck

Comment: ONLY AVAILABLE DURING THE CHECKPOINT RUN CHALLENGE IN THE WHITE FLATS
ZONE. You CANNOT use it during Free Ride. You CANNOT use it during any Career
Race. You CANNOT use it in ANY other Challenge except that ONE in the White
Flats. Once you catch it, it will be in your Garage tab permanently, but if
you try to select it, it reminds you you can't use it. This is extremely
STUPID, if you ask me, because there are plenty of long, flat, safe areas in
the game where you could drive this thing. It's one of the coolest looking
cars in the game, and they practically ruined it. They really shouldn't have
even bothered having it in the game if you can only use it for the 1 race.
By the way, this is the "Drag Racer" you probably heard about on Internet
forums somewhere. Anyway, the Challenge you get to race in with this is very
short. A time trial, actually. You get about 63 seconds to finish a 3+ mile
race going 200+ MPH over a blinding white desert. It's kinda fun going that
fast, but visually it's not much different from 100 MPH in the game. Also, 2
bars of Reliability is a bit of a stretch, since you'll never crash at less
than 200 MPH (nothing to hit!) but at 200 MPH or more, you could run over a
flea or some pocket lint and still crash. If they could put more than 6 bars
for speed, this one might have something like 10 stars. Yeah, that's why I
said in the Stats section that the Stats bars are kind of arbitrary, with
6 bars basically meaning "Really frickin' fast." Oh, one more thing, this car
is technically considered a generic "Bonus Car," but for all intents and
purposes it can be considered a Maverick Muscle Car. It's definitely not a
Bike/Quad/SUV/Truck, and I don't think it would be a Buggy.

Comment: A pickup truck, but it's classified as an SUV and not a Truck (since
the Trucks are generally monster trucks). This thing handles a bit strangely,
and it actually performs reasonably well offroad as long as you don't expect
to make any sharp turns in the grass. Even on the road, though, you will
likely need to tap the handbrake a lot while going fast (80+ MPH) as it
doesn't seem to pull sideways and slide by itself like a lot of the other
vehicles do. I've reached 120 MPH max on flat, straight asphalt, but measly
45 offroad.

Comment: I had just tried out the Ironbear before I caught this Maverick.
Stats-wise, this beast is far better than the Ironbear, but in reality it's
only slightly better. The main drawback with this vehicle is that it's HUGE.
I mean, it's a freaking schoolbus! Obviously not a good choice for a heavily
forested area or a place with lots of narrow paths, but for big open areas,
this thing is probably THE BEST you can get for a while! I'll be alternating
between the Ironbear and The Educator as I work on collecting all those
collectibles and achievements. One important side note, though, do NOT try to
use this vehicle on BUMPY terrain. The rocky areas of Redrock Bluffs are a
deathtrap. The Educator, with all its immense mass and momentum, takes every
little bump like a big ramp, and you will not have much control as you will
be in the air so much. This can be a blessing if you like to hit big air, but
for most races, you will bounce in the wrong direction and it will slow you
down in the long run. The size of the thing also makes the camera zoom out,
and you won't see the smaller boulders in the ground as easily.

4. RACE GUIDE [S4RG]
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Each zone is listed separately, in order of fewest stars, to most stars,
needed to unlock that zone. Some zones unlock at the same time (same number of
stars needed) and I'll list those in the order the game mentions them.
ABOUT SPECIAL CAMPS:
Each zone has 3 Career Races except for 5 zones that have 6 Career Races --
these bigger zones are where you gain a new selection of vehicles to purchase,
and where you will get much better rewards for finishing races. These bigger
zones are also where you will find Mavericks to chase down, but only once the
appropriate Career Race has been won.
ABOUT DIFFICULTY LEVELS:
All of the Career Races can be played on three different levels of difficulty:
Rookie, Expert, and Legend. The only difference in difficulty is that on
Rookie, the AI will sometimes slow down or crash on purpose to let you win, and
on Legend the AI can cheat and boost its speed out of nowhere, leading to many
unexpected losses. Each difficult nets you the same fuel reward per win, but if
you complete a higher difficulty before a lower one, you get the reward for all
lower difficulties as well. For example, the Career Race, "Lakeside Run" nets
you about 660 fuel per level, so if you beat it on Rookie you only get the 660
fuel and 1 Star. If you then beat it on Expert you get an additional 660 fuel
and 1 more Star. If you had skipped Rookie and Expert and went to Legend before
completing the lower difficulties, you would have gotten the whole 3600 fuel
and all 3 Stars and be done with the race. Any bonus rewards such as Gear,
vehicles, Liveries, Doppler Trucks, etc. are rewarded ONCE regardless of the
difficulty. With that in mind, you can zip through the game on Rookie mode and
only try Expert and Legend races when you need extra Fuel, Stars, or for
Achievements. You WILL have to race Expert and Legend races at some point in
order to get more Stars and unlock further zones!
ABOUT CHALLENGES:
There are 10 Challenges per zone. Each zone has the same Challenge types:
Speed Run, Chopper Chase, Seek'N'Destroy, Raid, Blitz, Checkpoint Run, Knock-
Out, Wild Track, Checkpoint, and Endurance. However, the actual course,
difficulty of the challenge, vehicles allowed, and other details will vary from
one zone to the next. I will not list all 10 Challenges in detail for every
zone, but I will at least try to provide the vehicle selection and basic info.
All Challenges (up to the "70 Stars Required" zones, at least) are worth 4000
Fuel each, so that's 40,000 Fuel per zone.
NOTE: You can't start a Career Race or a Challenge unless you OWN at least ONE
of the permitted vehicles for that race. You can buy the vehicle during the
race's setup screen, but if you don't have the right vehicle yet and you can't
afford any of them, you'll just have to come back later!
NOTE: The game reminds you several times, but you have to travel (by wheels or
by chopper) to a zone before you can choose races in that zone from the menu.
Of course if you're ON the race track, you can start from there, too.

Comment: Ther are a LOT of easy shortcuts in this race, from sliding up an
incline to cut a sharp turn, or CAREFULLY going straight through a patch
of trees instead of following the path around the trees. It can be
difficult to tell exactly where the next Checkpoint will be, so check
your map often, and don't rely too heavily on GPS.
2. "Sun Strike"

Ironbear, Tiger Shark
Details: 14 Checks, 3.9Mi Mostly straight course, Clear day

Reward: Tribal Swans Tank Top Gear, Afterburner Maverick Bike
Comment: I say "mostly straight course" but there are a lot of small
twists and turns along the way, especially a bigger one during the last 4
Checkpoints before the finish line. Do NOT try to use the beached ships
as ramps, you are VERY likely to smash into an invisible barrier even if
you think you have hit it perfectly straight. This is one of those times
when the AI is likely to cheat on Legend if you are less than 50 meters
from them near the finish line -- they'll come flying out of nowhere and
hit 125+ MPH in vehicles that can't go so fast (on sand, no less!).
3. "The Asphalt Medusa"
Raid / 8 Entrants / Mostly Road
Muscle Car & SUV: The Bullet, Wild Wolf, Scorpion, The Enforcer, The
Flash, Devastator, Burningdust
Details: 5.5Mi Mostly straight open course, Clear day
Fuel: 1730x3
Reward: Coarse Fabric Shorts Gear, Liveries Doppler Truck
Comment: If you haven't been doing Challenges, this will be your first
Raid, which is just a long race with none of those pesky Checkpoints.
Take as many shortcuts and corner cuts as you see fit, but watch out for
the many obstacles. Unless you come back later with a better car (such as
the Burningdust, which makes this race a joke), you will want to stay on
the asphalt as much as possible.
4. "Wild Sand Ride"
Checkpoint Race / 9 Entrants / Mostly Offroad
SUV: Knightmare, Burstrider, Dreadnaught
Details: 4Checks, 4.5Mi Mostly straight course, Clear day
Fuel: 1860x3
Reward: Fury Aircraft Helmet Gear, Spider Wraith Maverick Buggy
Comment: It's a long race with few checkpoints, so try to cut the few
corners there are. I recommend the Dreadnaught, hands down, because the
stability and Offroad are more important than the Knightmare's
maneuverability. If you don't have the Dreadnaught yet, good luck, or
just wait.
5. "Tankfully Yours"
Circuit Race / 6 Entrants / Mixed Offroad
Quad: Mudblaster, Quadram, Road Hog, Deathwing, Doomsday, Komodo, Mosquito
Details: 3 Laps, 2.4Mi Round course, Stormfront day
Fuel: 1350x3
Reward: Classic Fuel Long Sleeve T-Shirt Gear, Challenges
Doppler Truck
Comment: A lot of water, a LOT of annoying obstacles with sticky edges,
and a couple of ramps that are deceptively placed -- meaning, if you jump
them, you'll probably go off course, or head towards another obstacle. A
very short race, but that leaves NO room for error.
6. "Riders on the Storm"
Checkpoint Race / 9 Entrants / Mixed Offroad
Buggy: Mudhog, Psychotic Fox, Spider Wraith, Salamander, Firefly, One-Eyed
Jack, Avenger, Zero G
Details: 17 Checks, 4.3Mi Winding course, Windy thunderstorm!
Fuel: 1440x3
Reward: Snake fangs Hockey Helmet Gear, One-Eyed Jack Maverick Buggy, Wild
Wolf Reward Muscle Car
Comment: Your biggest worry in this race is the severely reduced
visibilty... You can only see about 50 to 75 meters ahead through most of
the race, and there are a lot of scattered brick-wall type obstacles --
mostly big trucks sitting in the middle of the road. Don't worry about
the storm itself, or the crashing towers, for this race, that's all
harmless scripted eye candy.
NOTE: Beat this Career Race on Legend difficulty for an Achievement,
"Humble Beginnings". I did this using the Spider Wraith and it only took
one try! (But, honestly, I probably got lucky...)

SUV: Knightmare, Burstrider, Sabretooth, Dreadnaught, King Arthur
Details: 3.259Mi Mostly straight open course, Smokey night
Fuel: 1850x3
Reward: Horned Ring Football Helmet, Liveries Doppler Truck
Comment: You'll want something with some Offroad and Speed. The
Dreadnaught should do nicely, but the Sabretooth is technically the
fastest if you intend on staying mostly on the path where it can build
speed, then using the momentum to fly over hills, corners, and up cliffs.
If you're in the Sabretooth, try skipping the very last sharp uphill turn
by hopping the side of the cliff at the top of the previous uphill turn
(instead of turning right onto the path, just face the finish line and
ride straight over that wall of dirt there; you skip a whole chunk of
path on the right)!

Bike: Sludgeray, Riot, Shuriken, Dustgrinder
Details: 4 Checks, 5.9Mi Winding course, Overcast day

Comment: I really don't have any good advice. Somehow, I beat this on
Expert, but Legend is kicking my ass. I can get to first place, but no
matter what I do, someone will ALWAYS come flying past me halfway between
the 3rd Checkpoint and the Finish Line, even with the Shuriken.

Reward: Fangs Moto Helmet Gear, Vista Points Doppler Truck
Comment: This a very long race, with a lot of twists and turns, plus it's
a road course, meaning you won't be able to do a lot of fancy shortcuts.
There are also some bits where you have to be extremely careful, because
there's little to no road, especially in one spot where you must detour
up a dirt road slope. I recommend one of the faster Quads over the Bikes.

Liveries: 12
CAREER RACES
1. "The Swamp"
Checkpoint Race / 8 Entrants / Mixed Offroad
SUV: Knightmare, Burstrider, Sabretooth, Dreadnaught, King Arthur
Details: 21 Checks, 5.4Mi Winding course, Clear day
Fuel: 1850x3
Reward: Bonze and Dragon Tattoo Gear, Challenges Doppler Truck
Comment: There are some really important shortcuts for this race.
Especially on Legend, if you don't take those shortcuts, the AI will, and
you'll find yourself 500 meters behind without a moment's notice.
Checkpoints 6 to 7 can be hit with one straight line through the forest,
ignoring the GPS's detour around to the left. On 15 to 16, you can cut
through along the little creek.
2. "Big Cauldron Rush"
Checkpoint Race / 9 Entrants / Mostly Offroad
Bike: Sludgeray, Riot, Shuriken, Dustgrinder
Details: 19 Checks, 4.7Mi Round course, Overcast day
Fuel: 1280x3
Reward: Classic Paintball Mask Gear, Vista Points Doppler Truck
Comment: The course is more like a Circuit Race, since the final
Checkpoint is the starting line. If you wait until you have the
Dustgrinder, the Legend mode is a joke.
3. "Lake Maze"
Circuit Race / 8 Entrants / Mixed Offroad
Quad: Mudblaster, Quadram, Road Hog, Deathwing, Doomsday, Komodo, Mosquito
Details: 3 Laps, 3.4Mi Lopsided course, Stormy day
Fuel: 1450x3
Reward: Motorbike Pants Gear, Liveries Doppler Truck
Comment: There's a long stretch of straight course, a few mild turns, and
a couple of shorter stretches of straight course, then a few crazier
turns, hence the "lopsided". The Deathwing is perfect here. Watch out for
the tree on the left of the big curve after the bridge, and the buildings
in the later half of each lap. NOTE: One of the buildings has some sort
of clipping problem, and you can drive right through the walls. Come back
in Free Ride and goof around!

Details: Follow Copter / All Road
3. Seek'N'Destroy - Buggy: Avenger
Details: Catch Destruction / *All Road
4. Raid - Truck: Lucha Libre
Details: A to B / All Road
Comment: Mostly dense forest, first half is on snow. Monster trucks aren't
meant to go through forest, dammit! Try using first person view (click
right analog) to get a better view if you're smashing into a lot of
trees. It says "All Road" on the Challenge Info in the game, but that's a
HUGE LIE. At best it's a "Mostly Road".

1. "Reservoir Hogs"
Checkpoint Race / 8 Entrants / Mostly Offroad
Quad: Mudblaster, Quadram, Road Hog, Komodo
Details: 22 Checks, 2.7Mi S-shaped course, Cloudy day
Fuel: 2470x3
Reward: Grunge Flame T-Shirt Gear, Liveries Doppler Truck Comment: This
one has a LOT of Checkpoints, all very close together. Don't stray far
from the suggested course.
2. "Drowned City Run"
Checkpoint Race / 9 Entrants / Mostly Road
Quad: Fanatic, Speed Demon, Steelfang, Schadenfreude
Details: 17 Checks, 4.8Mi Mostly straight course, Overcast day
Fuel: 2610x3
Reward: Urban-Undus Bandana Gear, Banshee Maverick Bike
Comment: Lots and lots of small turns. The course is fairly straight, but
you'll probably need to powerslide through most of the turns in order to
avoid flying off the road.
3. "Asphalt Frenzy"
Checkpoint Race / 10 Entrants / Mostly Road
Muscle Car & Buggy: The Bullet, Wild Wolf, Scorpion, Dragonfly, The
Enforcer, The Flash, Superfly
Details: 14 Checks, 5.5Mi Winding course, Clear night
Fuel: 2770x3
Reward: Celestial Tank Top Gear, Vista Points Doppler Truck
Comment: I recommend the Wild Wolf or Dragonfly for this one.
4. "Speeding in the Sunset"
Checkpoint Race / 9 Entrants / Mixed Offroad
Bike: Sludgeray, Riot, Shuriken, Dustgrinder, Tomahawk, Mechahead, Twin
Freaks
Details: 13 Checks, 4.2Mi L-shaped course, Overcast day
Fuel: 2380x3
Reward: Beast Shorts Gear, Burningdust Maverick SUV
Comment: Mostly straight with one huge turn. This should be an easy race,
especially with a good bike like the Shuriken. just watch out for houses
and water (deep water and creeks). NOTE: I actually got my "Blind Man's
Buff" achievement on this race by accident, and I didn't realize I had my
GPS off until I wont the race and got the achievement.
5. "A Bridge Too Far"
Circuit Race / 8 Entrants / Mixed Road
Muscle Car & SUV: Stormrider, Stratospheric, The Bullet, Wild Wolf,
Scorpion, Sabretooth, The Enforcer, The Flash, King Arthur, Devastator,
Burningdust
Details: 3 Laps, 3.9Mi Mostly straight course, Clear day
Fuel: 3070x3
Reward: Rainbow Army Helmet Gear, Challenges Doppler Truck
Comment: I tried out my new Burningdust SUV here, and it worked well
enough. Just be careful at the turnaround at the end of the bridge, and
the sharp right turn near the finish line. On the return portion of the
bridge, stay near the middle of the racing lane to avoid most of the
barricades.
6. "Tornado Warning"
Checkpoint Race / 7 Entrants / Mostly Offroad
Muscle Car: General Custer
Details: 15 Checks, 4.2Mi S-shaped course, Tornados!
Fuel: 2870x3
Reward: New Vehicles Unlocked, Paint Splatter Long Sleeve
T-Shirt Gear, Komodo Maverick Quad, Tomahawk Reward Bike
Comment: Your only option here is the General Custer Muscle Car, but
that's alright because it's perfect for this course. First tip, avoid the
TORNADOS. They WILL suck you up and respawn you. Thankfully, you can see
which ones are close by glancing at your mini-map in the corner. Also,
random vehicles and debris will crash down in front of you throught the
later half of the race, as well as radio towers toppling over and a barn
or two getting ripped right off the ground. This is one of my favorite
races! If you're trying Legend mode, there are 2 early shortcuts you
need to take. First, after the very first Checkpoint, take a careful
jump (or slide) over the side of the road toward the next Checkpoint. For
this to work, you must do a handbrake 180 AS you fall over the side, so
that when you land on the next bit of road, you're facing the right way.
If done properly, this can put you in first place by 50 to 100 meters.
Don't jump the second road, though, or you'll miss the Checkpoint.
Then, shortly after the 3rd Checkpoint, you can cut through the grassy
area to the left and skip the sharp turn toward Checkpoint #4. The best
time to make the turn is right after the second fallen tower (the map
actually shows this shortcut if you look very closely). If you do this
shortcut correctly after doing the first one correctly, you should be
300 or more meters ahead of the 2nd place guy. Don't be surprised if that
300 drops down to 100 or even 50, as that just means the AI took that
same grassy shortcut that you just took. The rest of the race is
mostly slippery, overgrown dirt roads. Don't crash into a tree, or hit
any debris, OR slip off the road, and the victory is yours! Cake, right?
NOTE: If you've completed every Career Race up to this point, you
should get the "Gear Lover" achievement for having 24 pieces of Gear.
CHALLENGES
1. Speed Run - Bike: City Hunter
Details: Time Trial A2B (4:15:00) / Mostly Road (5.119Mi)
Comments: While this one isn't too hard, it can be a bit of an annoyance
due to the course/vehicle combination. The City Hunter is, of course, a
road bike. That's great, when you're on a course with more than 75% road,
but at least half of this course is dirt road or rough trails mixed with
180 degree turns and steep cliffs. There's one point near the end where a
short, gradual incline on a dirt road becomes a sudden drop followed by a
180 turn; just slow down or handbrake BEFORE the drop.
2. Chopper Chase - Truck: Bone Crusher
Details: Follow Copter / All Road
3. Seek'N'Destroy - Muscle Car: The Bullet
Details: Catch Destruction / Mostly Road
Comment: Heavy storm with reduced visibility.
4. Raid - Bike: Shuriken

Comment: Far too easy to get lost as the GPS will likely be misleading you
once you're in the offroad areas.

CAREER RACES
1. "Your Way"
Checkpoint Race / 10 Entrants / Mixed Offroad
Buggy: Mudhog, Psychotic Fox, Spider Wraith, Salamander, Firefly, One-Eyed
Jack, Avenger, Zero G
Details: 15 Checks, 7.3Mi Winding course, Clear day
Fuel: 2760x3
Reward: Oilskin Cropped Jeans Gear, Vista Points Doppler Truck
Comment: You'll want something that can catch good speed on both grass and
dirt roads, like the Spider Wraith. Don't worry if you are in last place
for most of the race, since the later half of the race as alot of gently
curving roads and plenty of room to quickly catch up. NOTE: I got "New
Vehicles Unlocked" as a reward here, but it was also my 45 Star mark, so
more than likely you must have Drownington Cove's 6 races won, AND have
45 stars for the 3rd set of vehicles to fully unlock.
2. "Woodstock"
Checkpoint Race / 9 Entrants / Mixed Offroad
SUV: Knightmare, Burstrider, Dreadnaught
Details: 11 Checks, 2.4Mi Mostly Straight course, Overcast day
Fuel: 3050x3
Reward: Wild Fangs Cross Helmet Gear, Liveries Doppler Truck
Comments: A couple of significant turns in the first quarter of the race,
but nice and straight with a few gentle turns after that. Not even all
that long, shouldn't be any trouble.
3. "Ashes to Ashes"
Checkpoint Race / 8 Entrants / Mixed Offroad
Truck: The Bullfrog, Juggernaut, The Educator, Lucha Libre, Bone Crusher,
Ironbear, Tiger Shark
Details: 5 Checks, 5.1Mi Winding course, Overcast day
Fuel: 3350x3
Reward: Classic Moto Jacket Gear, Challenges Doppler Truck
Comment: Beware your GPS here, which may lead you astray, or point you in
the direction of a nearby road. You'll be alternating between faster dirt
and asphalt road sections and sections of drudging thorugh grassy areas
with lots of burnt trees.

1. "Under the Bridge"
Checkpoint Race / 8 Entrants / Mixed Offroad
Truck: The Bullfrog, Juggernaut, The Educator, Lucha Libre, Bone Crusher,
Ironbear, Tiger Shark
Details: 7 Checks, 4.9Mi Mostly straight course, Clear day
Fuel: 3260x3
Reward: Horsefire Aircraft Helmet Gear, Challenges Doppler Truck
Comment: Go with something that has All-Terrain, like the Tiger Shark.
Some of the AI racers will actually take shortcuts, but nothing you can't
easily out-do.
2. "No Brains Allowed"
Circuit Race / 9 Entrants / Mostly Offroad
Bike & Quad: Sludgeray, Riot, Shuriken, Dustgrinder, Mudblaster, Quadram,
Road Hog, Komodo
Details: 3 Laps, 4.9Mi Round course, Overcast day
Fuel: 2540x3
Reward: Flaming Gasmask Gear, Liveries Doppler Truck
Comment: A perfect course for a fast Quad like the Komodo, but you can
just as easily take a bike. There are pleny of corners to cut and LOTS of
ramps and jump points. Actually, while you practice for the Legend
difficulty, you might just get enough jumps for the "Wriggling About"
achievement (if you don't already have it by this point).
3. "Coming in from the Cold"
Circuit Race / 8 Entrants / Mixed Road
Quad: Mudblaster, Quadram, Road Hog, Deathwing, Doomsday, Komodo, Mosquito
Details: 3 Laps, 2.4Mi Round/sharp course, Snowy day
Fuel: 2500x3
Reward: Iron Ringed T-Shirt Gear, Vista Points Doppler Truck
Comment: A very short course with only 6 Checkpoints, but there are some
sharp turns that are a bit wild on snow. I really hate this race... And
I'm not looking forward to any future snowy courses. It's so hard to get
the timing right so that you slide around a corner without either A)
slamming sideways into something or B) losing all of your speed. It's
like your Quad turned into a Muscle Car, hehe.

Zero G
Details: 18 Checks, 9.1Mi Winding course, Overcast day
Fuel: 2810x3
Reward: Regency Football Helmet Gear, Liveries Doppler Truck
Comment: Lots of 180 turns, both uphills and downhills. There aren't many
convenient cuttable corners, though there are some. Most of the corners
are long and you'll lose speed and lead if you cut too much. I personally
recommend you use a Buggy instead of a Muscle Car, as you aren't so much
concerned with speed here. There is one shortcut, between Checkpoints #11
and #12, you can simply fly over the edge at the top of a series of
downhill sloping turns, and if you land safely, you're 200+ meters ahead.
2. "Sunset Pass"
Checkpoint Race / 9 Entrants / Mixed Offroad
Bike: Sludgeray, Riot, Shuriken, Dustgrinder, Tomahawk, Mechahead, Twin
Freaks
Details: 26 Checks, 4.6Mi Winding course, Clear day
Fuel: 2400x3
Reward: Futuristic Paintball Mask, Vista Points Doppler Truck
Comment: If you don't have the Dustgrinder, yet, the Mechahead or at least
the Tomahawk will be your best bet. The 26 Checkpoints are basically
there to force you to stay on the track since they're all very close
together. you can still cut corners, but always make sure you're not
going to skip a Checkpoint!
3. "Stargazing"
Circuit Race / 8 Entrants / Mostly Road
Bike & Quad: City Hunter, Afterburner, Banshee, Cheyenne, Fanatic, Speed
Demon, Steelfang, Easyrider, Schadenfreude
Details: 4 Laps, 3.9Mi Winding course, Hazy day
Fuel: 2520x3
Reward: Camo Combat Pants Gear, Challenges Doppler Truck
Comment: I can't stand using a Bike for this race, since one bump with an
obstacle respawns you, and most of the road bikes are terrible for slow,
sharp turns... and this race is nothing but slow, sharp turns. The Speed
Demon is more than capable here, as are most of the road quads.

Ironbear, Tiger Shark
Details: 6 Checks, 6.5Mi Single curve course, Overcast day
Fuel: 6960x3
Reward: Aztec Totem Tattoo Gear, Vista Points Doppler Truck
Comment: A fairly typical monster truck race, it's long and bumpy. At
least you get to enjoy the change of scenery... Finally, not so damn many
trees! Watch out for the little deserted town between Checkpoint #5 and
the Finish Line. The buildings there are rock-solid and you might hit
some steps.
2. "Madman's Bluff"
Circuit Race / 11 Entrants / Mixed Offroad
Bike: Sludgeray, Riot, Shuriken, Dustgrinder, Tomahawk, Mechahead, Twin
Freaks
Details: 3 Laps, 6.7Mi Winding course, Windy day (Sandstorm?)
Fuel: 5750x3
Reward: Road Shorts Gear, Challenges Doppler Truck
Comment: Throw in some Red Bull sponsored barricades and some big dirt
ramps and this would be a great "extreme" motocross race track, sort of.
Watch out for sharp turns and unexpected rocks in the road. For this one,
the Mechahead feels too fast (and unreliable) and the Dustgrinder doesn't
take sharp turns well enough, so the Tomahawk may be best.
3. "Another One Bites the Rust"
Checkpoint Race / 8 Entrants / Mostly Offroad
Quad: Mudblaster, Quadram, Road Hog, Komodo
Details: 26 Checks, 3.4Mi S-shaped course, Overcast day
Fuel: 5960x3
Reward: Tire Tracked Moto Helmet Gear, Steelfang Maverick Quad
Comment: The Checkpoints are all very close together, so this actually
turns out to be a fast, exciting race. There aren't any dangerous turns,
but you still have to watch out for all the rocks and other obstacles.
These cactii are so much easier to dodge than those unpredictable trees!
4. "Road Rage"
Raid / 8 Entrants / Mostly Road
Truck: Bonesaw, Thundertruck
Details: 4.9Mi S-shaped open course, Clear day
Fuel: 7270x3
Reward: Simple Tank Top Gear, Firefly Maverick Buggy
Comment: Another nice and straightforward Truck race. The Thundertruck is
more than capable here, but I'm not sure about the Bonesaw. Just try to
stay on the road to maintain speed.
5. "Walking the Sky"
Circuit Race / 7 Entrants / Mixed Offroad
Quad: Deathwing, Doomsday, Mosquito
Details: 3 Laps, 2.8Mi Round winding course, Clear day
Fuel: 6070x3
Reward: Fuel Oilskin Cropped Pants Gear, Liveries Doppler Truck
Comment: This is a strange little race. You loop around a little tee-pee
place, then head up onto a giant U-turn glass bridge -- I assume it was
going to be some sort of observatory looking down into the canyon. This
race can be very, very frustrating, but it's quite short. If you get the
hang of when and where the twisty bits show up, and when to watch out for
the invincible barricades versus the breakable barriers, you shouldn't
have too much trouble. I recommend the Deathwing.
6. "Twisted Minds"
Checkpoint Race / 9 Entrants / Mostly Road
Bike: City Hunter, Afterburner, Banshee, Cheyenne, Easyrider
Details: 21 Checks, 4.1 Mi Winding course, Tornados!
Fuel: 5930x3
Reward: Angel Wings Gasmask Gear, The Educator Maverick Truck, Ironbear
Reward Truck
Comment: More tornados! And this time you're on a weak city bike instead
of a Muscle Car! The slightest bump against flying debris or anything
dropped into your path can end your lead suddenly and unexpectedly. It
seems that a lot of the flying debris events are scripted so that you
will be hit directly if you are not a few seconds ahead or behind. The
racing part itself isn't that hard, thankfully, so if you keep the
crashes/respawns to a minimum, you just might stand a chance. Don't
worry, even on Legend mode, the AI races will still get sucked up/smashed
just like you! My main challenge here was learning NOT to "overbrake"
when turning (braking when going slow, or braking too much when going
fast, causing my bike to JERK to the side). I recommend the Afterburner
here, as the Banshee and Cheyenne don't turn as well, and the Easyrider
and City Hunter are slower.

Fuel: 5870x3
Reward: 99 Hockey Helmet Gear, Vista Points Doppler Truck
Comment: A couple of long stretches and gentle turns, plus one strange
section of zigzagging Checkpoints over a little creek valley. Unusually
long for a Circuit Race type. The Komodo is a great choice here.
2. "The Grey Snake"
Checkpoint Race / 9 Entrants / Mostly Road

Details: 29 Checks, 5.3Mi Mostly straight course, Clear day
Fuel: 6480x3
Reward: Tire Marks T-Shirt Gear, Liveries Doppler Truck
Comment: There are a lot of small turns, typical of a Muscle Car course
even though you can use a Buggy. I don't recommend using a Buggy here,
unless you pick a fast one. I bought The Flash specifically to try it out
on this race, and I wasn't displeased; beat Expert on the 2nd try. The
Flash is a Muscle Car, by the way, not a Buggy. It's like hot rod or
dragster.
3. "Suntower Speedway"

Comment: You'll be racing under, over, and around an array of solar
panels. This is another one of those races where the majority of the race
involves sliding around sharp turns, and this time several of them are
grassy spots. My favorite backup, the Deathwing, is perfect here.

Reward: Kabal Tank Top Gear, Liveries Doppler Truck
Comment: Fairly short and simple, with only a few unexpected obstacles to
watch out for (mostly foresty bits), and a couple of uphil 180 turns on
grassy road. You can take a shortcut down the side of the cliffs after
the first Checkpoint, essentially skipping the first set of downhill 180
turns, but only if you think you will survive the jump -- I did, several
times. Just don't attempt to jump from the very top, slide down a bit and
go over the side at a slower speed, making contact to slow your descent
just a bit. This gives you a solid 150-200 meter lead right off the bad.
The Tomahawk will serve you nicely here.
2. "The Lawnmowers"
Checkpoint Race / 10 Entrants / Mixed Offroad
Buggy: Mudhog, Psychotic Fox, Spider Wraith, Salamander, Firefly, One-Eyed
Jack, Avenger, Zero G
Details: 27 Checks, 4.2Mi S-shaped course, Overcast/rainy day
Fuel: 6290x3
Reward: Biohazard Dragon Jacket Gear, Vista Points Truck
Comment: I like to use the Firefly here. Just before Checkpoint #3, you
can slip between the tree and the truck on the lower road to your right,
saving you the hassle of sliding around the corner -- you might be able
to get a bit of a lead or get closer to 1st if you slip past some of the
sliding opponents. There is a convenient ramp before Checkpoint #5 that
gives you a boost up the 180-turn uphill slope. Before Checkpoint #20,
there's an improvised ramp that can launch you over a trailer and
straight into the Checkpoint. Another one before #21. Also, the
Checkpoints are all very close together after the first few, so there
isn't much room for shortcuts. If you're behind 2nd or 3rd place by more
than 250 meters after the 10th Checkpoint, you might wanna just restart.
3. "The Haunted Firm"
Circuit Race / 8 Entrants / Mixed Offroad
Quad: Mudblaster, Quadram, Road Hog, Deathwing, Doomsday, Komodo, Mosquito
Details: 3 Laps, 2.7Mi Mostly straight course, Clear day
Fuel: 6190x3
Reward: Starlet Pants Gear, Challenges Doppler Truck
Comment: Another great time to fall back on the Deathwing! Straight
segments linked with big, wide turns you'll have to slide through. Not a
very difficult race, but there are some places where you can slip up. Try
not to slam sideways into the invincible barricades. There's a ramp in
barn (I think it's a barn) that's safe to take if you know you can land
and still turn directly to the right, right afterwards.
NOTE: If you complete every Career Race up to this one, you'll get your
"Gear Buff" Achievement now (48 pieces of Gear).
NOTE: Er, I think this race's name is a typo. It's probably supposed to
be "The Haunted Farm" but it definitely says 'Firm' in the game. Hey,
Asobo is a team of Frenchies, and I think they did a smashing good job
with the rest of the English. But, maybe that's why they chose the word
'Livery' instead of 'Decoration' or 'Decal' or something else common.

1. "Direct Flight"
Checkpoint Race / 8 Entrants / Mixed Offroad
Muscle Car: General Custer, Stormrider, Stratospheric
Details: 16 Checks, 3.3Mi Winding course, Clear day
Fuel: 6380x3
Reward: Light Tentacles Long Sleeve T-Shirt Gear, Challenges Doppler Truck
Comment: Bought the Stratospheric just to try it out on this race. I'm
still on the fence. No, seriously, I went flying over a cliff and landed
on a fence! Actually, I don't like it. See the Vehicle section for more.
As for the race... Just use the General Custer. The opponents tend to
slip around a lot and may knock you off the road. Don't expect to be
going very fast through most of the race (45 to 80MPH). There are a few
bluish rubble ramps near the end of the race. Other than that, I don't
really have any advice. Good luck...?
2. "Hard Time"
Raid / 10 Entrants / Mixed Offroad
Buggy: Mudhog, Psychotic Fox, Spider Wraith, Salamander, Firefly, One-Eyed
Jack, Avenger, Zero G
Details: 2.6Mi Winding course, Rainy day
Fuel: 6320x3
Reward: Biohazard Bandana Gear, Liveries Doppler Truck
Comment: Don't follow the GPS trail around to the right in the very first
stretch; almost immediately after the start line, go over left side of
the road, through the trees, and onto the road on the other side. On the
higher difficulties, almost half of the AI opponents will do this. You
might not come out first, but if you don't do it, you'll automatically be
at least 300 meters behind the guy who IS in first. I tried out the Zero
G for the first time here, and while its Speed and Acceleration were
good, it just couldn't handle all that offroad terrain and half dirt,
half grass; it slips around like a Muscle Car. Try the Firefly, instead.
3. "The Roller Coaster"

Quad: Mudblaster, Quadram, Road Hog, Komodo
Details: 28 Checks, 2.6Mi One big curve course, Rainy day
Fuel: 6040x3
Reward: Tribal Inferno T-Shirt Gear, Vista Points Doppler Truck
Comment: This is a very short race, with all the Checkpoints VERY close
together. Unfortunately, this is a very slippery race (remember that
"grandma on a wet bathroom floor" metaphor?). I used the Komodo, and it's
alright here, but it's very tricky getting through some of the forested
areas since one tiny adjustment to your direction becomes a major over-
correction and you slam into a different tree.

Details: 2 Laps, 4.8Mi Figure-eight course, Clear day
Fuel: 8600x3
Reward: Kabal Heavy Pants Gear, Vista Points Doppler Truck
Comment: Nothing but dirt roads over sand dunes, and one little stretch
through a cluster of crumbling brick buildings. You have to be extra
careful any time you are going upill or turning, as you are likely to
accidentally use the sandy hills as ramps, and you will find yourself
flying in the wrong direction, helpless as you watch yourself soaring in
the air and unable to do anything until you land.
2. "Dazzling Dunes"
Circuit Race / 9 Entrants / Mostly Offroad
Quad: Mudblaster, Quadram, Road Hog, Komodo, Daredevil
Details: 2 Laps, 2.9Mi Round course, Sandstorm day
Fuel: 9390x3
Reward: Piercings and Chains Gear, Trailblazer Maverick Bike
Comment: For such a short and simple race, it feels very chaotic. I'd
definitely recommend the Road Hog here. It feels like it handles the sand
pretty well, possibly due to the extra weight and wheels. You'll be
slipping around quite a bit regardless of vehicle choice (jeez, when
AREN'T you slipping around in this game?!), but you have room to correct,
unless you're going over one of the ramps. Keep a close eye out for the
Checkpoints that are right before a sharp left or right turn. You need to
slide early so that you are already facing the right direction as you
pass through the Checkpoint.
3. "High'N'Dry"
Checkpoint Race / 8 Entrants / Mostly Offroad

Details: 7 Checks, 4.1Mi Mostly straight course, Clear day
Fuel: 14050x3
Reward: Skullstorm Cross Helmet Gear, Liveries Doppler Truck</pre><pre id="faqspan-3">
Comment: There are a few really sharp turns here, but all with Checkpoints
at corners so you can't cut them. This is a great race to use the
Ironbear, and it is safe to whip out The Educator if you want to. This
is a straightforward, almost insultingly simple race. But that's a nice,
welcome change of pace.
4. "Crossroads"
Raid / 10 Entrants / Mixed Road
SUV: Sabretooth, King Arthur, Devastator, Burningdust
Details: 4.1Mi Open course, Clear evening
Fuel: 12600x3
Reward: Iron Ringed Tankt Top Gear, Chaos Wrecker Maverick SUV
Comment: I was going to recommend the Burningdust, but it slides around
too much here, so go with the Sabretooth instead -- unless it's just to
slow for you. For some reason, they must have thought it was funny to put
All-Terrain vehicles on a primarily paved race. But hey, at least you're
safe to take all the shortcuts you want if you choose them! This race is
a Raid after all... Actually, I'd recommend using the Sabretooth. There
are a couple of "mandatory" shortcuts that the AI will take on higher
difficulties. If you check your map, you'll see that 2 of the final 3
sharp turns have a thin line cutting through them like the letter A. The
cross lines through those turns are what you want to take; it's fairly
straightforward. You can take these easy shortcuts regardless of what
type of vehicle you chose. There's also one HUGE optional shortcut early
in the race (if you mess it up, you can restart). It's the fang-shaped
west-pointed turn that goes around a deep valley... You can actually go
down the side of the valley and up the othe rside, skipping the entire
U-turn portion and giving you an extra 200+ meters. The AI never seems to
take this shortcut, but it IS kinda tricky since you might get stuck at
the bottom if you're too slow, and you might go flying past the road if
you're going to fast; plus, Asphalt vehicles might have a tough time
getting up the other side safely.
5. "Dustbowl Frenzy"
Circuit Race / 8 Entrants / Mostly Offroad
Buggy: Mudhog, Psychotic Fox, Spider Wraith, Salamander, Firefly
Details: 3 Laps, 3.8Mi course, Clear day
Fuel: 11200x3
Reward: Abstract Geom Shorts Gear, Challenges Doppler Truck
Comment: This is a really interesting race, as it takes place on the sandy
streets of a dried up, deserted city, skyscrapers and all. If you wanted
to check out Big Cauldron's Edge's sunken city, this is as good as you'll
get. There aren't many possible shortcuts here, but the turns aren't
difficult, and there are several safe - or even necessary - ramps.
6. "Dark Dust"
Checkpoint Race / 9 Entrants / Mixed Road
Muscle Car: Stormrider, Stratospheric, The Bullet, Wild Wolf, Scorpion,
The Enforcer, The Flash
Details: 22 Checks, 7.4Mi Winding course, Sandstorm!
Fuel: 12100x3
Reward: Grunge Jacket Gear, The Viper Maverick Buggy, Trackmaniac Reward
Buggy
Comment: Your visibility will be severely reduced. At some points you'll
be lucky to see 10 meters in front of your vehicle. If you tilt the
camera a bit so you're looking down at your vehicle, rather than up its
tailpipe(s), you may have an easier time seeing the path ahead of you as
well as any obstacles. This is a very stupid race. I hate it. I want it
to die a horrible painful death. You must depend on your mini-map and the
GPS arrows to get around through much of the race, and you drive through
SEVERAL different sand storms. This is also a rather long race. The
Stormrider is the only non-Asphalt you get to choose from, but it's
rather slow and may not keep up with the AI racers, especially since the
AI racers get to cheat and are not nearly as hindered by the sandstorm as
you will be. Plus, most of the race is on dirt road. Yeah, you're pretty
much screwed, buddy. As frustrating as this race is, it's definitely
impressive graphically.

Muscle Car: General Custer, The Bandit, Stormrider, Stratospheric
Details: 3.4Mi Mostly straight open course, Rainy day
Fuel: 11200x3
Reward: Stardom Aircraft Helmet Gear, Liveries Doppler Truck
Comment: The Bandit is likely your best bet here. About 0.7 Miles into the
race, there's a squarish right hand U-turn (north side of the race) that
you can shortcut by turning onto the little dirt road and following the
darkened shortcut marker (surely you've seen the "suggested shortcut"
color of path on the map by now? I've pointed out several). The red and
white arrow "go this way!" signs actually point out the little shortcut
to you in-game, so it's really obvious. It's just after the ramp over the
truck in the middle of the road. There's another less obvious shortcut
about 0.65 Miles from the finish line; it's not marked on the map with
a darkened line, but you'll see the "go this way!" sign again showing you
that you can go the predertimined Right, or shortcut to the left. If you
are 100 meters or more ahead, it doesn't matter, even on Legend mode.
Despite the weather and vehicle choice, this should be an easy race.
2. "Butcher Rodeo"
Circuit Race / 11 Entrants / Mixed Offroad
Bike: Sludgeray, Riot, Shuriken, Dustgrinder, Valkyrie, Tomahawk,
Mechahead, Trailblazer, Twin Freaks
Details: 2 Laps, 5.6Mi Rectilinear course, Overcast day
Fuel: 8900x3
Reward: Jail Long Sleeve T-Shirt Gear, Vista Points Doppler Truck
Comment: This one is really just a series of straight lines (from one
Checkpoint to the next), unlike many Circuit Races which just have you
sliding sideways for most of the race. I'll say this now: Bike race, with
a lot of trees. Are you cowering in fear, yet? Ah, its not THAT bad, most
of the trees are barren (unlike the vision-blocking trees in the greener
zones). I'd recommend the Trailblazer, and as long as you don't smash
into anything and you turn your corners really tightly, you should be
fine. Not much room for actual shortcuts, as there are a LOT of those
pesky Checkpoints. Stick to your GPS arrows. This is the sort of race
that gets really tedious when you repeatedly fail.
3. "Adrenaline Factory"
Circuit Race / 10 Entrants / Mostly Road

Details: 4 Laps, 4.2Mi Puzzle-piece shaped course, Overcast day
Fuel: 15170x3
Reward: Starshine Pin-Up Tattoo Gear, Challenges Doppler Truck
Comment: Four laps, if you didn't notice. There are only 2 or 3 actual
Checkpoints in the whole race, and you're restricted to Asphalt Trucks
and SUVs. The actual course is TINY and consists mainly of impervious
obstacles (the sort that even a monster truck smashes into and halts),
as well as successive 90 turns. I'm absolutely horrible with races like
this, so I'm afraid I really don't have any good advice. This isn't so
much a proper race as it is a bump-n-slide contest...

Comment: This has to be one of the shortest races in the game! Not
counting Challenges, of course. Not much to say here, except that the
Daredevil may actually be TOO fast and handle TOO well. I mean, it's
great for this race, but do you really want to risk introducing your face

Details: 28 Checks, 6.2Mi S-shaped course, T-storm night
Fuel: 8490x3
Reward: Tribal Sun Paintball Mask Gear, Liveries Doppler Truck
Comment: The Slipstream is awesome here, especially since there are almost
no unexpected road obstacles whatsoever. No fancy shortcuts. In fact,
keep your ass off the grass, or you'll go from 130 MPH to 20 MPH in no
time! If there's less than 10 feet of grass, you might be able to shave
a corner here and there.

Comment: This is one of those races with so few Checkpoints that it's
basically a short Raid. You know what that means! Hint: How many times
have I said "shortcut" in this guide? The Daredevil should serve you well
here as it did in "Blazing Woods Maze". Nothing specific to say here.

Details: 16 Checks, 4.4Mi course, Rainy day
Fuel: 8650x3
Reward: Beast 999 Jacket Gear, Vista Points Doppler Truck, Damocles
Maverick Muscle Car
Comment: Seems like this crazy course was created to force you to buy the
Valkyrie if you hadn't already. The race starts off with a huge amount of
unexpected rocks and other obstacles, and it's mostly on grass. From the
Start Line, go in a straight line toward the first Checkpoint; you'll
need to gather some speed, and hit the slope in front of you (instead of
the right turn the GPS indicates). You might not come out first, but 3rd
or 4th is better than 8th. Most of the "jumps" in this part of the race
are just flat, dark colored rocks, which tend to send you flying to the
side, or directly into an obstacle, so avoid the flat, sloped rocks. You
should also try to stay off the sides of the valley which are parallel to
your path -- meaning, if you're going down a slope, that's fine, but if
the slope is sideways, stay in the bottom. The rest of the race is just
that familar dirt-road-on-cliff-edge stuff, with some fields, too.
2. "Burnt Rubber"

Fuel: 10150x3
Reward: Tentacle Day Cropped Pants Gear, Challenges Doppler Truck
Comment: Go with the Daredevil here. You'll only have 2 things to worry
about on this one. One, don't hit a tree. Two, catch up to first place
fast, and stay there. The race isn't very long or eventful, and shouldn't
be very hard. Try using the Road Hog if you're crashing a lot.
3. "Last Call for Passengers"
Circuit Race / 8 Entrants / Mixed Offroad
Muscle Car & Buggy: Stormrider, Stratospheric, One-Eyed Jack, The Viper,
Avenger, Zero G
Details: 4 Laps, 4.9Mi Round course, Clear day
Fuel: 10700x3
Reward: Call of Ancients Tank Top Gear, Liveries Doppler Truck
Comment: First instinct here is to use The Viper; there doesn't seem to be
any reason to use one of the other options. This is a strange race
cource, as it's a rare 4 Lap, and there are huge airline planes all over
the place. You can sort of shortcut under or around some of them,
straying a bit from the GPS arrows' path. Just take your corners tight
and close, and find a short, straight path through the airplane lot, and
you shouldn't have a problem.

Comment: This is the only place in the game where the Damocles can be
used. It's even listed as "Bonus Car" rather than "Muscle Car" which is
more likely what it would have been if it were a normal playable vehicle.
This race is weird. Really weird. There are Checkpoints all over the
place, and the only way you can tell which one you're going to next is to
watch the GPS arrows. Okay, that's a little harsh, since it's a simple
course that has a right turn, a left hand circle, and a right turn again
that brings you back parallel to your starting direction. In simpler
terms, you go straight, loop around, then come back as if toward your
starting line, but a few dozen meters to the south... just check your map
or something! It's the same course each time, of course, but you are in a
200+ MPH dragster. You will not be taking any of those familiar handbrake
sliding turns. Every turn must be careful, gradual, and very deliberate.
There are 14 Checkpoints, but you only get 1 minute and 2 or 3 seconds to
cover the entire race. 200* MPH for 63 seconds comes out to about 3.5
miles... (60 MPH = 1 mile per minute). If you turn too fast, you will see
smoke and you will drop from 200+ to about 170, which will cause you to
lose the rase. You cannot slow down at ALL. It helps if you take your
turns a bit wide for once (the outer curve) so that you can start your
turn a tiny bit early and keep your turn as "flat" as possible. Don't be
surprised if you think you did the race perfectly and STILL missed the
Finish Line by 0.15 seconds or so. Really, if you drop below 203 MPH at
any time, you will probably fail. If you take your turn a little too wide
and cover too much "extra" ground, you will probably fail. If you crash
into a Checkpoint pole, just restart. I won this challenge after about 20
or 30 tries. Shame you only get a measley 4000 Fuel for winning... This
could've been a cool achievement. Really, there are harder races, you
just generally have a little bit of room for error, but no, not this one.
*NOTE: I'm not taking into account the 10 seconds it takes to get to max
speed at the very beginning of the race.
NOTE: Don't even bother trying to escape the flats during the race... You
won't get far in just 60 seconds, even going 200+ MPH. Oh, if only they'd
let you use this in Free Ride...

obstacles on the road, nothing but slipping around... You know the drill.
I think this race is unnecessarily long and annoying, but that's me.
2. "Endless Road"

Fuel: 11100x3
Reward: Grim Reaper Pants Gear, Challenges Doppler Truck
Comment: Pretty much an offroad version of the previous race, and with
Buggies instead of SUVs. You can take some shortcuts here, as long as you
know for sure where the next Checkpoing will be. While making the steep
uphill climb to Checkpoints 15 and 16, you can cut up the side of some of
the slopes; the distance will make up for the lack in speed. Other than
that, you may just have to keep trying until you know the course well
enough to anticipate each turn. This one has given me a bit of trouble,
but still not as much as "Road to Hell". Ugh!

Comment: Lots of jumps and turns, several "unsafe" areas where it's really
easy to get stuck on a pole or an obstacle or just crash. You should
avoid going into the air unless it's inevitable (such as one of the cliff
areas). It's also really easy for a small hump in the road to become a
ramp if you're going too fast over it. The Trailblazer is the obvious
choice here.

NOTE: I haven't unlocked the final zone yet. I don't know if I'll be able to.
The game is starting to pick up in difficulty (or rather, frustratingness) and
if I faily any more races I might end up breaking the disk in half, haha...

5. QUICK REFERENCE [S5QR]
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This section simply lists the vehicles in the order they are listed in the
game, plus a note for what type of vehicle it is. If you're having trouble
remembering the name of a vehicle or you just need a quick reference, this is
the place!
NOTE: I'm not quite sure why the cars are ordered as they are. This is the
order they are in my game, and they seem to be ordered in a way that is
completely irrelevant to cost, when I bought them, what type they are
(somewhat), or any other noticeable pattern. They are grouped by type at first,
but at some point the list starts over, and the next set of vehicles are listed
and grouped by type all over again. If your game's list goes in a different
order, do let me know, and I'll just leave this as a quick reference with just
the vehicles in alphabetical order, sorted also by type. These vehicles MIGHT
be sorted by some sort of invisble "tier" criteria, but heck if I know what
that might be.

*The Warrior is a "special" bonus car in that it may only be acquired by using
a code such as the one I've provided. This code is all over the Internet, and I
don't know where it originally came from, or if it is even the only code of its
kind. This car does NOT count toward any achievements, and is completely
optional. I haven't actually gotten this car yet... Saving it for last.
**All cars with missing information are cars that I have confirmed, but have
not personally unlocked yet. I assure you this information is correct, though.

6. FAQ [S6FQ]
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Disclaimer: A lot of these questions have been asked at various forums around
the Web. Unless someone emails me directly, or unless I personally respond to
someone in a forum somewhere, I won't be putting credit for every single
question. These are frequently asked questions, and there anywhere from dozens
to thousands of people asking some of these questions. We all benefit from the
answers!
NOTE: I'm putting these in a general order from "most common" to "most
specific". Just read straight through if you really are stuck.
NOTE NOTE: It should be obvious that a FAQ section is bound to have some
spoilers, so I shouldn't even have to say it... But I will.
SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS -- and not the kind on your Muscle Car. Don't
complain to me if you read something you didn't want to know yet!
Q: Can I get off my vehicle and walk around?
A: I'm honestly surprised at how often I've seen or heard this question. No,
you can't get off your vehicle. The distances you must travel from one place to
another (if you aren't taking the helicopter fast-travel option) are extremely
far, and there is nothing you could do on foot that you can't do in a vehicle.
If you are stuck somewhere, just press Y (on the Xbox360) and you should
respawn back on a road or other safe spot nearby. If that fails, you can almost
always bring up the map (Back button or press Start and hit one of the Bumpers
until it shows up) and pick a Helipad to fast-travel to -- keep in mind that
Helipads are not available during races/challenges.
Q: Which vehicle is better, the ____ or the ____?
A: I can't really answer questions like these. For Free Ride, just use whatever
feels the most fun or useful to you. For Career Races and Challenges, check the
Race Guide section for tips. Other than that, it's up to you to find out which
vehicle works best for you. NOTE: I will point out when I think one vehicle is
VASTLY superior to another, especially on races, which usually restrict your
choice of vehicle to a small number of "acceptible" vehicles for that race.
Q: Which type of vehicle is better, ____s or ____s?
A: Again, I can't really answer questions like these. Most races only let you
choose from one or two types of vehicles, so it will only come up when you
need to know which vehicle will get you around the most efficiently in Free
Ride. I can only offer my own personal experience and suggest a Quad or Buggy,
since they're the most likely to be suited for a larger variety of situations,
and get you there fast and in one piece. My favorite early vehicle is the
Deathwing (Quad), but it's somewhat slow compared to a lot of vehicles you
unlock at Tsunami Reef and afterward. Later in the game, the Ironbear is great
for almost any situation. For difficult terrain like mountains, try a Truck,
specifically the Sabretooth.
Q: How do I do tricks on a Bike or Quad?
A: The game does tricks for you, automatically. It's hard to tell when you will
do a trick or not, but it's best to try fast, high jumps where you will have at
least 2 seconds in the air. It also seems to be random what type of trick your
driver does. And before anyone asks, YES, the Road Hog is still a Quad and you
can still do tricks on it, even though it has 6 wheels. I have tested this.
Q: How can I get more cars? The ones I can buy all suck, and there are no other
options! The game told me I unlocked more cars, but where are they?!
A: Complete Career Races and earn more Stars. You may have to complete some of
the races on Expert or Legend difficulty if you have been playing Rookie only.
You can also get free cars (Rewards) and Mavericks (chase them down to get them
for free) unlocked by completing certain Career Races in Special Camps.
Q: I beat a Career Race in one of the 6-race zones and it told me I had
unlocked new vehicles, but I don't see anything new for me to buy from the
Garage! Where are those vehicles?
A: This actually confused me for a while, and I feel kinda stupid now that I
know the answer and it was so simple. The game hands out this default "New
Vehicles Unlocked!" notice ANY time you get new cars (not Mavericks, though).
Usually, the 6th Career Race of a Special Camp will give you a Reward car, and
that's the notice you're seeing. Just one car. HOWEVER, if you just so
happened to earn exactly the number of stars you need in order to unlock a new
Special Camp while winning the 6th race of a prior one, you will see ONE notice
alerting you of both the free Reward vehicle, AND the new set of purchasables.
If you were on ANY other race (NOT the 6th race of a Special Camp), and you see
the "New Vehicles Unlocked!" notice, that almost always will be accompanied by
a notification telling you you've unlocked new areas (zones) as well.
Q: My driver looks like an idiot. Where can I go to buy more gear?
A: You don't buy gear, you only get it as a reward for finishing some certain
Career Races. If you think he looks that stupid, just drive something with a
roof so you don't have to look at him until you get better gear! See the Race
Guide for which races give you gear as a reward.
Q: My car looks stupid. Where can I get more paint job options?
A: Paint jobs themselves are all unlocked by default (one of each color for
every vehicle). The special designs, called "Liveries" in the game (as in
de-liveries?), can be unlocked by finding vehicles out in the wild. If you
finish the right Career Race for that zone, you can unlock a Livery Doppler
Truck, which you can chase down and bump into to unlock the locations on your
map. You can get Liveries on your own by spotting them and touching them, but
the Doppler Truck tells you where ALL of them are for that zone. I may also try
to list the number and name of each Livery for each vehicle in the Vehicle
section, but that will be a lot of work, and it might not get done.
Q: How can I get more fuel, fast?
A: The fastest way is by completing Challenges. Usually, Challenges are on par
with Expert difficulty Career Races, but they give you about 4000 fuel per pop.
If you're having trouble winning the Challenges, and you can't make any
progress on the Career Races, your only choice is to drive around looking for
fuel barrels.
Q: Okay, how can I find fuel barrels?
A: They're scattered all over the place, but always offroad. They're also
randomly generated, so the only way to find them is to explore. They're a lot
more plentiful in fields and forests -- the further you are from a road, the
more likely you are to find barrels! They are much easier to spot at night and
light up like reflectors, but obstacles are much more difficult to spot at
night and may hinder your search. One more thing, if you're not in a race at
the time, and you see a pyramid of barrels (3 barrels together with 1 stacked
on top), you should always stop and grab it for an easy 400 fuel. That
Livery/Vista/Doppler/Maverick can wait a few seconds, they're not going
anywhere (or they're not going far, at least!). Don't spend a lot of time
intentionally hunting for barrels. They will accumulate quickly over time, and
later zones tend to have a higher number of barrels -- Redrock Bluffs is a
great place to find barrels as it has high visibility range and lots of
barrels; at this point in the game, though, barrels are piddly pocket change,
as even the Career Races will net you 6000 Fuel or more on Rookie mode! That's
18,000 Fuel or more per race if you beat them on Legend mode!
Q: Can a friend and I join up in Free Ride and just drive around in the same
game world?
A: Yes! It's just called "Online Free Ride" and seems like one of the cooler
multiplayer features. Most "open-world" games with multiplayer restrict you to
specific areas and force objectives on you (or take away all objectives). You
might be restricted to staying in the same zone, but I don't know yet. I'll
update this once I know one way or the other for sure.
Q: How do the online Career Races work? Are there still AI drivers in the race,
or is it just me and my friend(s)? Do you get Stars that count toward your
offline progress? Are you still restricted by vehicle choice per race?
A: Er, I actually haven't done any online/multiplayer stuff yet. But I'm going
to make educated guesses and say... I don't know, Probably AI racers, Probably
no offline progress, and Probably no vehicle restrictions. But maybe I'm
thinking of Custom Races? I'll update this once I know for sure, so don't take
my word for it.
Q: Why am I racing around wasting fuel, only to get more fuel? Isn't that a
little hypocritical, or crazy? And why do I have to crash into things in order
to collect them?
A: Hey, none of that logic nonsense! It make sense because the game designers
say so, and if you question the legitimacy or practicality, well, c'mon, it's a
video game. Nobody questions Mario when he's off munching hallucinogenic fungus
and making a mockery of the fine art of plumbing. Go play a puzzle game!
Wait... Tetris doesn't make much sense, either. Oh, well...
Q: Should I save my fuel and put off buying vehicles, or should I just rush out
and buy every vehicle as soon as possible?
A: I say save your fuel. Unless you REALLY want to see how one of the vehicles
handles, you can hold off until you need a better vehicle for one of the
races/challenges. Plus, the vehicles become progressively more and more
expensive as you unlock more zones and vehicles to buy. It's better to buy the
more expensive -- and generally better -- vehicles before blowing it all on 5
or 10 cheaper -- and generally worse -- vehicles. If you're doing a lot of Free
Ride and finding a lot of barrels, or if you're doing a lot of Career Races or
Challenges, you should have MORE than enough fuel most of the time. You can
always buy the cheaper vehicles later.
Q: How do I climb the steep inclines to get to some of the Vista Points and
Liveries? I always slide back down!
A: Pick a Truck or an SUV, and try to get a running start. It may also help to
approach at a slight angle. Sometimes, a Buggy may be a better choice, but
Bikes and Quads are generally to light to have enough traction, and Muscle Cars
will usually slip around the worst. You also might try looking around the
mountain for an easier climb -- some of them have roads that go right up to the
peak! NOTE: This advice also works well for driving through shallow water.
Trucks are the hardest to sink, because they're so tall, but there will always
be a path to follow through shallow water; you just need to pay close attention
to the water.
Q: I keep losing races because I'm too far behind, even though I'm going full
speed and I'm not crashing! What am I doing wrong?
A: Fuel is unique in that it puts a LOT of emphasis on offroad paths. At the
start of each race (a few seconds after everyone takes off), press the Back
button to bring up your map. Take a close look at the path of the race, and see
where all the check points (if any) are. Look for any spots where the suggested
path (the black line) has a sharp turn -- these are great spots to cut corners,
which can save you hundreds of meters and bring you from last place to first
place! Keep an eye out for terrain that your vehicle might not be able to
handle, avoid rivers/creeks (the blue lines) and remember that some vehicles
slow down by 20 MPH or more when offroad. As the game itself tells you, just
because you CAN take an extreme shortcut, doesn't mean you should!
Q: I keep flying over cliffs and slipping off the road, and there's no way I
can seem to finish a race in time/in first place like this! What am I doing
wrong?!
A: You might not be familiar with a common race trick: Powersliding. This is
the concept that if you turn the vehicle early, and apply the handbrake (X
button for Xbox360), you will be sliding sideways, ready to take off in the
correct direction. Example- You're in a slippery Muscle Car and you see a sharp
right turn coming up. About 20 to 50 feet before the turn (depending on your
speed and traction), you jerk the car to the right and immediately handbrake.
Your car will be facing to the right, but sliding in the same direction it was
already going. You can usually let go of the handbrake once the car is facing
the right way, but if you're having trouble staying on the road, you might need
to hold the brake until the car is slow enough to safely accelerate forward.
Each vehicle powerslides a bit differently, and some vehicles have enough
traction that they can make sharp turns without sliding, such as the
Afterburner, which does not need to powerslide on paved roads unless you're
making a full 90 degree turn or sharper. Then again, it's possible you're just
on slippery terrain, and you'll just have to learn to compensate.
Q: What are those skeletons I see all over the offroad terrain?
A: I'm no biologist, but I'm guessing they're horses and/or cows, given the
rural setting of most of the zones, plus the whole "world-wide weather
wackiness" plot. I don't see why all the cows and horses would die off if there
are still humans around, and grass to munch on, but it gives the game a nice
post-apocalyptic feel.
Q: How do I get that one "secret car"?
A: There is a sort of "cheat code" vehicle called "Warrior" obtained by
inputting the code 18041851 in the menu. I haven't done this myself, so I don't
know for sure, but I've heard you then have to chase it down like a Maverick,
but it doesn't have a convenient arrow marker on the map. This is the only
"secret" or true bonus car I've heard of that sounds plausible and real. There
are rumors of a snowmobile, a hovercraft, and other vehicles that don't quite
fit in with the existing vehicles, but if I find out anything, I'll add it.
Q: What is the name of the song that plays during the ____ race?
A: I really can't tell you. I only rented my copy of the game, so my only
advice is to seek out a copy of the manual (if you don't have your own) and
check there. Or beat the game and see if the song titles show up during the end
credits. All of the music seems to be part of a custom soundtrack made just for
the game, so I doubt you'll find the music anywhere outside of the game. You
could even check the homepage: www.fuel-game.com (the - is important!).
NOTE: www.fuel.com is the site for the rock band "Fuel".
NOTE: www.fuelgame.com is a domain placeholder with ads.
Q: [CFTG] Is there any easier way to get the "travel from X camp to Y camp
without resorting to the chopper" achievements? Do I really have to drive all
that way? How long will that take?
A: You technically do have to drive all that way, and for the two secret ones,
it could take up to 2 hours each. For the shorter one, it shouldn't take more
than an hour even with the slow early vehicles. BUT, there is a sort of glitch
you can do to skip much of the tedious driving. I feel bad pointing this out
since you may miss out on a lot of cool sights and a lot of easy Fuel barrels,
but not everyone cares about that stuff. NOTE: I found out this glitch while
reading through the achieve360points.com forums; it was pointed out by a user:
->
http://www.achieve360points.com/forums/showthread.php?&p=1061108#post1061108
So, credit goes to "canadabug" and not me.
HOW TO DO THE TRICK
-STEP 1: Find the nearest Livery or Vista Point to whichever camp you need to
"drive" to. This works for sure with both types of collectibles. If it's too
hard getting to one of these, any Livery or Vista Point will work but will
require you to drive a little farther.
For Tsunami Reef, collect the Eagle Lines Livery for the MudBlaster
For Redrock Bluffs, collect the Stylized Camo for the Banshee
For Pinwheels Ridge, collect the Nenryoh for Shuriken or White Bear Mountain VP
-STEP 2: Take the chopper to your starting camp: Offshore Shack, Tsunami Reef,
or The White Flats (depends on which achievement you're doing).
-STEP 3: Bring up your map and locate the dot for whichever Livery or Vista
point you unlocked near your destination camp. Note that some of them are sort
of out of the way and do require 5 to 15 minutes of driving, but compared to
1 or 2 hours, it's nothing. Press A while your cursor is over the dot to fast
travel there. This works just like a chopper/heliport but doesn't interfere
with the achievement. This ONLY works if you have already COLLECTED the thing.
-STEP 4: Drive from your Livery or Vista Point to the destination camp. You do
still have to drive through the Fuel flags to enter the Garage there. The
achievement will unlock when the loading screen goes away.
NOTE: You may have to crash your vehicle along the way in order for this to
work. Simply smash full speed into a rock, or fly off a cliff or something. It
may work if you press Y to respawn, but I haven't tested this.
NOTE: This trick works best if you are planning to get all or most of the
Vista Points and Liveries. You can theoretically do this trick from ANY of the
collectible spots but you won't save as much time. If you aren't willing to
collect the closest ones, just collect the "next" closest ones, which may be
easier to get to, but aren't nearly as close.
Q: Are there any sneaky glitches or bugs to take advantage of?
A: I'm glad you asked! I've actually already discovered one VERY useful glitch
that allows you to switch vehicles during a race.
ABOUT THE GLITCH:
First, bad news: I don't know WHAT triggers this glitch exactly. Second, good
news: it doesn't matter what type of race or challenge you're in, you can
change to ANY vehicle available to you and likely buy new ones as long as
they're available to buy. So, how am I getting this glitch? Well, it seems to
be related to timing, like a lot of glitches. I have to restart races often,
either due to impending failure, a bad start, or just to back out of the race
since I don't need to finish it. I get the glitch somewhat randomly by quickly
pressing the Back button (Xbox360) to bring up the map -- I'm not sure why I
hit the back button, since it requires an extra step to restart a race, but
that's what I was doing. I have NEVER encountered this glitch when pressing the
Start button, ONLY the Back button. I'm convinced the glitch has something to
do with the way the game renders the menu, and since the Map is one tab to the
right of the Garage option, sometimes bringing up the Map enables the Garage
tab when it shouldn't.
WHAT THE GLITCH DOES:
Sometimes, the Garage tab is white (available) instead of faded gray (blocked).
One tap on the Left Bumper and you can change your vehicle just as if you were
in Free Ride mode! Of course, you can't just press Back at any time. This is
where the timing issue comes into hand. So far, it seems like WHEN you press
the Back button is the only real factor. I have gotten the glitch to occur
immediately after starting a race (rare), while sliding off course, typically
over a hill or cliff (common), and immediately before or after a crash,
especially a respawn crash (also common).
HOW THE GLITCH WORKS:
The only real problem is that there's no way to tell exactly when you're
supposed to hit Back. I'm thinking that, maybe, when the game would normally
disallow vehicle changing (such as in mid air in Free Ride) is when the glitch
happens during race. I have confirmed that, if you have switched vehicles with
the glitch, the game does NOT know any different, and you can finish the race
or restart as many times as you want, as long as you don't QUIT THE RACE. Once
you quit the race, the glitch must be done again. Considering the (currently)
unpredictable nature of the glitch, you'll want to take advantage of it any
time you come across it -- if you're into that sort of thing, anyway. This
glitch does NOT seem to affect any achievements, vehicle unlocks, or any other
factor, really. Again, the only problem with this glitch is that it's just
plain unpredictable in when it will or will not happen.
THE INEVITABLE DISCLAIMER:
Use this glitch at your own risk! I take no responsibility in any potentially
corrupted game saves, Microsoft intervention, or if you waste hours of your
life trying to get the glitch to happen. I assure you this glitch is
legitimate -- after wasting several hours of my own life testing it out on an
offline profile. I do not know if this glitch can be used in online modes, and
I am NOT going to test that. Also, beware that Asobo may patch the glitch at
any time.

7. ACHIEVEMENTS [S7AC]
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Offline achievements are sorted into categories by what you must do to unlock
them. There are only 3 easy (i.e. boostable) multiplayer achievements. If you
want to peek at the "secret" achievements, they're listed last, after a small
Spoiler warning, JUST in case you might not have wanted to know what they are
yet. Comments provided in blocks when necessary. I'm going to assume that the
PS3 version's Trophies are the same as the Xbox360's Achievements, but if there
is any discrepancy, well, this guide is for the Xbox360 version, so that isn't
really my problem, now, is it? I don't even have access to a PS3 right now!
NOTE: If you really do find that the Trophies are different, you can let me
know and I will gladly make a note of it here so as not to confuse any PS3
players checking this guide!

vehicle if you want to. Or, you could do the Collectible Fast Travel glitch
to get there faster. (See [CFTG] in the FAQ)
>>>Earning Stars in Career Races---------
"Born Under a Lucky Star (15G)"
Win your first Star in career mode.
"Humble Beginnings (15G)"
Win all three Stars on 'Riders on the Storm'.
Comment: Final Career Race in Tsunami Reef.
"Path to Glory (15G)"
Win all three Stars on 'Twisted Minds'.
Comment: Final Career Race in Redrock Bluffs.
"Under the Limelight (15G)"
Win all three Stars on 'All's Well That Ends Well'.
"All Your Camps Are Belong To Us (30G)"
Unlock all 19 camps for great justice!
Comment: You unlock camps (zones) by earning Stars in Career Races. You need
at least 170 Stars for this, which means you'll need a lot of Expert Stars,
and more than just a few Legend Stars. Also, this is a parody/pun on the old
Sega Genesis (MegaDrive) game, Zero Wing. If you like old-school style
horizontal scrolling shooters, check that out! Somebody set up us the race!
"Hobbyist Stargazer (15G)"
Win 40 Stars in career mode.
"Regular Stargazer (15G)"
Win 120 Stars in career mode.
"Obsessional Stargazer (30G)"
Win all 216 Stars in career mode.
Comment: This means... Win every race on Legend difficulty! If you aren't a
natural at racing games, you've got a long road ahead of you (pun intended)
as the AI does indeed cheat on the Legend difficulties. Careful choice of
vehicle (when applicable) and agonizingly studying and memorizing the races
may very well be necessary if you're determined. If you have all zones
unlocked, you won't have more than 46 Stars to go... Yippee...
>>>Completing Challenges-----------------
"Here Comes a New Challenger! (15 G)"
Win a challenge.
"Hobbyist Challenger (15G)"
Win 30 challenges.
"Regular Challenger (30G)"
Win 100 challenges.
"Obsessional Challenger (90G)"
Win all 190 challenges.
>>>Collectibles--------------------------
"Oil Strike (15G)"
Collect your first oil drum.
"Oil Rig (15G)"
Collect 100 oil drums on the field.
"Black Gold Tycoon (15G)"
Collect 500 oil drums on the field.
Comment: This sounds like a lot, but you should find quite a few of the 4
barrel stacks if you drive offroad a lot while looking for your Liveries,
Vista Points, Mavericks, Doppler Trucks and while working on related
achievements like "Hello, World!" I actually got my 500th barrel before I
even unlocked the 4th zone!
"Open Your Eyes (15 G)"
Find and contemplate a Vista Point.
"Hobbyist Sightseer (15G)"
Find and contemplate 10 Vista Points.
"Regular Sightseer (15G)"
Find and contemplate 50 Vista Points.
"Obsessional Sightseer (30G)"
Find and contemplate all 95 Vista Points.
Comment: (for all four above) Your first Vista Point will probably be in
Offshore Shack. Just beat Career Races and track down the Vista Points
Doppler Trucks in each zone, and hunt down the points one-by-one. Yes, you
have to drive out and touch them. Do this at the same times as collecting
Liveries to save time!
"Hobbyist Painter (15G)"
Collect 50 vehicle liveries.
"Regular Painter (15G)"
Collect 100 vehicle liveries.
"Obsessional Painter (30G)"
Collect 148 vehicle liveries.
Comment: (for all three above) Just like the Vista Points, win Career Races to
get the Livery Doppler Trucks and have the spots marked on your map. Do it at
the same time as finding Vista Points to save time. Note that the one for
148 Liveries is not "all" of the liveries. There's no achievement for that.
"One of Each, Please! (15G)"
Own at least one vehicle of each type.
"Hobbyist Collector (15G)"
Own 10 vehicles.
"Regular Collector (15G)"
Own 40 vehicles.
"Obsessional Collector (30G)"
Own all 74 vehicles.
Comment: There is one vehicle I know of that is NOT required for the
achievement, see the FAQ section. Other than that, make sure you get all of
the Mavericks, and if you're short on fuel for some of the later vehicles,
try to complete some unfinished Challenges or Legend mode Career Races.
"Gear Lover (15G)"
Own 24 pieces of gear for the driver in career mode.
"Gear Buff (15G)"
Own 48 pieces of gear for the driver in career mode.
"Gear Freak (30G)"
Own all 72 pieces of gear for the driver in career mode.
Comment: (for all three above) Just blaze through the Career Races on Rookie
mode, and do some Experts and Legends when you need more Stars to unlock new
zones.
>>>Accomplishments-----------------------
"DIY (15G)"
Create a race using the race editor.
Comment: Just bring up your menu (Back or Start) and pick the 6th option,
which looks like a Z with a O and X on opposite ends. In the race editor
mode, place a few Checkpoints according to the on-screen instructions, and
save it. You don't even have to try out the race, but it might be fun!
"Rocket Science (15G)"
Travel 80 meters in a single jump.
Comment: This is best to attempt during races where you know there will be a
ramp after a long stretch of safe road. I got this on the double-wide ramp in
the Dry Rigs 3rd Career Race, "The Good, the Fast, & the Dirty" on an
Afterburner, but there are many other Bikes and vehicles that are faster.
"'Tis But a Scratch! (30G)"
Finish a career race ranked 1st without wrecking your ride.
Comment: Just practice the very first Career Race until you can win it on
Rookie mode without crashing -- you'll know you crashed if the screen goes
black and says "FUEL ...Generating" and you respawn. I'm not sure if pressing
Y (Xbox360) to respawn manually interferes, but you shouldn't, just in case.
"Blind Man's Buff (15G)"
Finish a career race 1st without GPS.
Comment: Press B (Xbox360) to turn off your GPS, then start the race. I
recommend the very first Career Race, because it's very straightforward, and
if you practiced it for the "'Tis But a Scratch" achievement, you should know
the course pretty well. Chopper Chase challenges don't count, because your
GPS is forced off by default.
"Wriggling About (15G)"
Perform 200 tricks (bikes and quads).
Comment: The game performs tricks for you automatically during some jumps.
Look for easy jumps (ramps) and hit them straight with decent speed. If your
driver hops off the Bike and kicks out, that's a trick. Do that 200 times.
You can use Quads just as well, but I find it easier to hit ramps on a Bike.
"Completion Obsession Syndrome (40G)"
Now, go breathe some fresh air!
Comment: Simply get every OTHER achievement in the game. Yeah, really
"simple", right? Heh... NOTE: This may or may not include online
achievements. If I can confirm if it does or not, I will be sure to add that
tidbit here!
-----------------------------------------
B. ONLINE/MULTIPLAYER ACHIEVEMENTS
-----------------------------------------
Not much here. All three of these are very easily boosted by finding a friend
(or random stranger on the Internet) to join and let you win 30 online Career
Races -- pick something short and easy like the very first race, "The Leap of
Faith". Then, have your friend make a very short custom race, and have him let
you win that race 30 times. THEN, make your own very short custom race, and
have him let you win 10 times. With luck, this won't take more than an hour,
but those 30 Career Races will be the bulk of it so get them done first.
Or you could, you know, just play legitimately and try to beat people the
normal, competitive way!
"Natural Selection (15G)"
Finish 30 online career races ranked 1st.
"Underground Brotherhood (15G)"
Play and win 30 online custom races you haven't created.
"A Prophet in His Own Country (15G)"
Finish ranked 1st on 10 online custom races you HAVE created.
-----------------------------------------
C. SECRET ACHIEVEMENTS
-----------------------------------------
...... .......
*v*v*v* POTENTIAL SPOILERS!!! *v*v*v*
''''''' '''''''
"Newton Was Right, After All (15G)"
Fall 150 meters.
Comment: The first easy place to do this is in Big Cauldron's Edge zone. Just
climb one of the big mountains around the lake, and then go speeding over the
edge of a cliff with a very steep drop. With a little luck and foresight,
your forward momentum will send you far enough forward so that you go far
enough before hitting the ground or slope below.
"Squadala, We're Off! (15G)"
Use heliports 100 times. Faster than a flying carpet, huh?
Comment: You can just sit in one spot, and continually call a chopper to the
same place, hit A (Xbox360) to skip the chopper drop-off scene, and repeat.
Shouldn't even take 5 minutes.
"Sand to Stone (15G)"
In free ride, go from Tsunami Reef Camp to Redrock Bluffs Camp without
resorting to the chopper.
Comment: The legit way to get this achievement is to select Tsunami Reef camp
from the map to fast travel there, and then drive all the way to Redrock
Bluffs, enter the Redrock Bluffs camp (marked by FUEL flags, a heliport, and
a flare), and voila. You MUST "enter" the camp by driving between the flags,
and the achievement will unlock when the loading screen goes away. This may
take an 1.5 hours or more, depending on which vehicle you choose, and how
many detours you have to take. I suggest the Ironbear if you're stubborn and
want to do this the hard (legit) way. There's another, easier way to do this
if you don't mind taking advantage of the developers' oversights. (See [CFTG]
in the FAQ)
"Salt over Snow (15G)"
In free ride, go from White Flats Camp to Pinwheels Ridge Camp without
resorting to the chopper.
Comment: Same as "Sand to Stone" except it's from the top-right zone to the
bottom-left zone. Easy method works here, too. (See [CFTG] in the FAQ)

8. LEGAL INFO [S8LI]
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I always hate this part. Basically, don't steal my words, don't take credit for
my work, and don't copy/modify/host this guide in any form except for personal
and private use (for yourself, or friends). If you really want to host a copy
of my guide on your site, you can always email me. I have agreed to this
before, but I find it very difficult to keep track of who has permission and
who doesn't, and it's often difficult to make sure every hosted copy of my
guide(s) are up to date. I will probably not grant permission, as I'm quite
fond of GameFAQs, but it won't hurt to ask. Any site granted permission to
host will be listed below, on the GameFAQs version of the guide at all times.
If you are reading this guide on any site OTHER than the ones below, please
email me immediately. If the list below does not match the list found on the
GameFAQs version, again, please email me immediately! I've got some kneecaps
to bust....

MOST RECENT ADDITION(S):
*Almost finished Quick Reference section (some missing info like prices)
*Almost finished Vehicle section. Some vehicles don't have any commentary on
them yet, but that's not a big deal. Vehicles listed as "incomplete" in the
Quick Reference section are not listed in the Vehicles section. I'd rather not
use borrowed data if I don't have to. I might come back later and add that
info in once it's technically common knowledge so I'm not copying someone
else's guide.
*Race Guide for everything except Rainier Peak.
*Added info on the trick to easily get "camp to camp" achievements
*Fixed some minor typos and errors
*Hiatus notice: Taking summer classes right now, and I decided to send the game
back into GameFly for the time being. I'm so sick of playing this game and the
100 or more hours I must have put into it.
