II. About [ABOUT]
=================
Frets on Fire (abbreviated as "FoF") is a free, open-source music video game
created by Unreal Voodoo in Finland. Players use the keyboard (or a Guitar
Hero/Rock Band Controller to play along with markers which appear on screen,
with the aim to score points, achieve a high point multiplier, and complete
a song. Frets on Fire was the winner of the Assembly 2006 game development
competition.
The game is written in the Python programming language, and is licensed
under the GNU General Public License, although the game incorporates other
free and open-source code under other licenses. The game's included song
files and some internal fonts are proprietary, and their redistribution is
not permitted outside of the Frets On Fire executable.

| B. Chart Editors [CHART] |
| C. Adding Songs [ADDNG] |
| D. Song.ini Values [VALUE] |
+----------------------------+
------------------
A. Setlist [SLIST]
------------------
In Frets on Fire, there are only four playable songs included. There are
three songs in the setlist by Tommi Inkila, and a tutorial.
"Bang Bang, Mystery Man" - Mary Jo (feat. Tommi Inkila)
"Defy the Machine" - Tommi Inkila
"This Week I've Been Mostly Playing Guitar" - Tommi Inkila
"FoF Tutorial" - Jurgen (Tommi Inkila)
NOTE: When downloading Frets on Fire X (FoFiX), no songs are included.
-----------------------
B. Song Editors [SHART]
-----------------------
There are different song/chart editors you can you to create custom songs
for Frets on Fire.
NOTE: You will need Audacity if you want to convert MP3 files to OGG files.
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/download/
Built-in Song Editor
--------------------
The original Frets on Fire includes a built-in song editor to create custom
songs. However, there aren't many features in this editor. In this editor,
you can:
- Add notes or chords, as well as long notes/chords.
- Estimate a song's tempo.
- Changing difficulty.
PROS
- Basic editting for beginners.
CONS
- All notes are long notes.
- The shortest note duration is 1/16th.
- Only creates a note chart for Guitar.
- Tempo is constant; you can't change the tempo between sections.
- Can't create Sections for parts of a song.
- Can't create Events when playing on a game with animated background.
- Time Signature is always at 4|4.
Using the built-in song editor of Frets on Fire is NOT recommended to create
custom songs.
Editor on Fire
--------------
http://code.google.com/p/editor-on-fire/
Editor on Fire (EOF) is an advance chart editor specially used for Frets on
Fire and FoFiX. Its current version is v1.8b4 which is useful for making
songs for the Phase Shift game but the official Google Code's version is
v1.71 for Windows and Linux users and v1.6 for Mac OS X users.
PROS
- Includes a tutorial on how to use it.
- It has pretty much everything you will need.
- Create events when making it for a Guitar Hero game to make the stage to
do what you want.
- Change the tempo anywhere and can make the tempo precisely more accurate.
- Edit Guitar, Bass/Rhythm, and Drum notes in any of the four difficulties.
- You can change the Time Signature, even the value of beat.
- Advanced chart editing but yet, easy to handle when you get use to it.
- Add vocals
- Edit
- A lot more things to do in this editor rather than FeedBack Chart Editor.
CONS
- Can't use the extended sustain glitch like you can do in the FeedBack
Chart Editor and in the built-in GHMix 2.0 song editor for Guitar Hero 5,
Band Hero, and Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock.
- It may be a little bit more difficult to use than the FeedBack Chart
Editor but that depends on what you are use to making charts with.
v1.6 and v1.71:
http://code.google.com/p/editor-on-fire/downloads/list
v1.8b4 (r726):
http://www.sendspace.com/file/jk01lv
FeedBack Chart Editor
---------------------
http://www.dotblip.com/feedback/index.php?page=about
FeedBack (dB) is a popular, advance chart editor for making Frets on Fire,
FoFiX, and Guitar Hero charts. The latest version is v0.97b but it may be
discontinued. This editor is not supported with Windows 2000.
PROS
- It has pretty much everything you will need, well almost.
- You can add section names to parts of songs.
- Create events when making it for a Guitar Hero game to make the stage to
do what you want.
- Change the tempo anywhere and can make the tempo precisely more accurate.
- Edit Guitar, Bass/Rhythm, and Drum notes in any of the four difficulties.
- You can change the Time Signature (but only in #|4).
- Advanced chart editing but yet, easy to handle.
- There is a glitch where you can create extended sustain notes (long notes
that pass through other notes) by copy a long note with SHIFT + Arrow Up
to select the long note and CTRL + C to copy it or CTRL + X to cut it and
move it and paste it anywhere before another note. This glitch also works
with GHMix 2.0 in the Music Studio of Guitar Hero 5, Band Hero, and
Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock.
NOTE: The length of the range selection using SHIFT + Arrow Up or Arrow
Down MUST be shorter than the distance between the spot you are pasting
the long note to and the note(s) you want the long note to surpass
without deleting the notes in front. Don't worry, when you select a
single long note (even at a small range), it will copy the entire long
note without cutting off the long note.
CONS
- Hammer-ons and Pull-offs are automatically set and placed to notes less
than 1/8th of the duration of notes since it uses Guitar Hero II's engine.
- The Time Signature's valud of beat is always set to 4 but you may leave it
at that for a measure.
- Some of the tracks that you can chart are useless. Just stick with Guitar
Coop-Lead, Coop-Bass/Rhythm, and Drums.
- You will need to use Chart2Mid to convert a CHART file to a MIDI file. You
can download Chart2Mid here:
http://www.mediafire.com/?yy2bt95jiee
The FeedBack Chart Editor is one of the best chart editors to use. However,
since the official website's download links are "dead", you can download the
latest version here:
http://www.mediafire.com/?xemyzojmlmy
NOTE: If that MediaFire link is dead, PLEASE email me and I will replace the
link.
Freetar Editor
--------------
Freetar Hero is a quick PC Guitar Hero like-game but in Java. It has its own
editor which can be for Frets on Fire. It is better than Frets on Fire's
built-in song editor but it is not a recommendable software.
PROS
- Basic editting.
- Can edit Hammer-ons and Pull-offs but will not effect the song in Frets on
Fire.
CONS
- Make charts for Guitar only.
- Even though adding notes is more precise, the notes go off beat.
- Tempo goes by beats per second (BPS) instead of beats per minute (bpm)
- Tempo is constant throughout a song.
- Charts are in SNG format. So you need to convert it to MIDI if you want to
play songs in Frets on Fire or FoFiX. You can do so at:
http://www.nukular.ch/foftools
Out of all of these editors, I recommend you to download EOF or FeedBack.
-----------------------
C. Adding Songs [ADDNG]
-----------------------
If you are manually making a folder for a specific song, the requirements
that a song MUST include (in order to play your song correctly) are:
- song.ini - For the song's name/artist and other information and editing
the settings for the song.
- notes.midi - For the note chart of the song
- guitar.ogg - The Guitar track of the song
OPTIONAL:
- album.png - FOFIX/ALARIAN ONLY: Using the Album picture (if label is set
to Album).
- label.png - For album, CD, or Cassette picture.
- notes-unedited.midi - FOFIX/ALARIAN ONLY: For changing the note chart if
enabled.
- song.ogg - The Song (background) track of the song. Can also be Vocals.
- rhythm.ogg - FOFIX/ALARIAN ONLY: The Bass/Rhythm track of the song.
- drums.ogg - FOFIX/ALARIAN ONLY: The Drums track of the song.
Importing Guitar Hero tracks
----------------------------
If you have Guitar Hero or Guitar Hero II (PlayStation 2 only), you can rip
the tracks into the original Frets on Fire in-game but you will need to
download oggenc.exe first:
http://www.rarewares.org/ogg-oggenc.php
NOTE: I have never imported a Guitar Hero game into Frets on Fire so I don't
know how it works so GOOD LUCK!
Downloading Songs

WARNING: The note chart of a song you are downloading may be unpredictable
so don't think the notes what you want will be there.
--------------------------
D. Song.ini Values [VALUE]
--------------------------
When adding information to a song in the song.ini file of the song, here is
a link giving you a list of features that you can put into a song.ini file

V. Modifying Frets on Fire [MODS]
=================================
You change add extra content to Frets on Fire or modify the game by adding
mods into data/mods in Frets on Fire.
If you installed the full game, there are two mods included in the game
including Chilly and LightGraphics.
Finding Mods to Download:
http://www.fretsonfire.net/forums/viewforum.php?f=11
NOTE: You must create an account to view threads in the Frets on Fire
forums.
There is also a tutorial in the stickies on how to add modifications to the
original game.
=============================================================================
========================
VI. Cheats Codes [CHEAT]
========================
In the original Frets on Fire, there are a few cheat codes. To input a cheat
code, quickly type in the code after selecting a song while the song is
still loading:
fastfoward - End the song as a win.
uptomytempo - Jurgen (as a Bot) plays the song for you. (NOTE: Even though
its a bot, it will make some mistakes playing faster notes.)
=============================================================================
============================
VII. Frets on Fire X [FOFIX]
============================
http://code.google.com/p/fofix/
Frets on Fire X (FoFiX for short) is a modified and an improved version of
Frets on Fire to make it look more like Guitar Hero and/or Rock Band. This
was previously the MFH/Alarian Mod (MFH = Myfingershurt) for the original
Frets on Fire. The latest stable version is v3.121 but its latest version
(unstabled) is 4.0.0a1.

-----------------------------------
A. Downloading & Installing [XDOWN]
-----------------------------------
You can download versions 3.120, 3.121 (recommended), and 4.0.0 alpha
(unstabled) at:
http://code.google.com/p/fofix/downloads/list
If you downloaded one in a ZIP, RAR or 7z folder, you will need WinRAR to
extract the contents. If you downloaded the ZIP or 7z folder of the game for
the OS you using, you don't need to directly install the game as it already
contains the content.
If you downloaded an EXE, then run it, then select the components you want
to install. I recommend checking everything. Then select where you want to
install the game and by default, it will install in your Documenets instead
of your Program Files.
-------------------
B. Features [FEATR]
-------------------
- Includes Guitar, Bass, Drums (Rock Band format; no Expert+), and Vocals
(only if vocals are included in a note.midi).
- Career Mode/Solo Tour
- Multiplayer modes:
- Face-Off: Play against another person (local) with separate parts.
- Pro Face-Off: Play against people (local) with the same chart.
- Co-op: Play co-op/band with people (local) together. (NOTE: May not be
available for all themes)
- Battle Mode: Play a GH3 battle mode with another player (NOTE: May only
be available for certain themes like a Guitar Hero III

- Party Play: You and a person plays a song on a single instrument. Every
30 seconds, players switch with another controller but on
the same instrument.
- Star Power/Overdrive
- Whammy/Killswitch

- Highway hitting range is very restricted (like Guitar Hero 1).
- Short amount of options.

Here is a list of themes that are included in FoFiX by default:
MegaLight - This is the main FoFiX theme which is in Rock Band format.

VIII. Frequently Asked Questions [FAQs]
=======================================
Here, you can ask me anything but I wrote some FAQs of my own.
Q: Why did you include so many links.
A: To provide sources and references. Also, I am a bit too lazy and I am in
a rush since I don't feel like explaining everything.
Q: When I choose a song in Frets on Fire, the game crashes. Why?
A: It happens sometimes. If it keeps happening, check the song.ini of a song
you are trying to play to see if there are any errors or mistakes.
Q: Why does Frets on Fire keep crashing? What are your suggestions?
A: I've been trying to figure out why the crashing happens randomly.
Download and play FoFiX instead of Frets on Fire. FoFiX is more stabled.
Q: I downloaded FoFiX 4.0.0 but why does it seem worser than 3.121?
A: FoFiX version 4.0.0 alpha is unstabled. Just stick with 3.121. It's the
best version available.
Q: Where can I download *song/theme/game*
A: I provided the links in their respected sections. Go browse through the
guide to find them.
Q: In FoFiX, why can't I co-op mode in Multiplayer?
A: It is only available to certain themes like a custom GH3 theme.
Q: Why didn't you include everything in the guide?
A: I'm lazing and I am quite in a rush.
Q: Why were there two FAQs posted by you instead of updated?
A: The version 1.0 was created by my old account, Zapping Ninja and I change
its Display name to NejiHyuga900. Version 2.0 and version 3.0 are created
by my main account, this one.
Q: Why is this guide horrible?
A: Because I am too lazy to cover everything by myself. :P But this is my
final and I am sorry for not giving you information that you needed.
EDIT: Hey, I actually gave out more information in version 3.5!
Q: Are there any other Guitar Hero/Rock Band related games for PC?
A: Yes. There is Freetar Hero (which SUCKS!!!) and Phase Shift (which
includes ONLINE MULTIPLAYER!!!)
Q: What is Phase Shift like and where can I download it?
A: It's pretty similar to FoFiX but it is made differently. But the song.ini
and other INI files for settings are the very similar. Unlike FoFiX or
FoF, Phase Shift has multiplayer, HOPO's can be customized when creating
charts using EoF and supports Open Notes for Bass, Rock Band 3's keyboard
track, Expert+ difficulty for drums (I'm pretty sure), Pro Guitar (RB3),
and Pro Drums (RB3). You can download that game at:
http://www.dwsk.co.uk/index_phase_shift.html
Q: What is the latest version of that Phase Shift game.
A: Look at the website. While they are still making a lot of updates
recently, I can't keep updating this guide to keep it up-to-date.
Q: Phase Shift crashed on me! What do I do?
A: Hey, I didn't make this guide especially for Phase Shift. This guide
is mainly to Frets on Fire and FoFiX. Go to the official Phase Shift
website if you have problems; don't bring it here.

FAQ Guide
---------
This guide was created by me. I may share this to other affiliations of
GameFAQs. You peeps are not allowed to upload this to any website without my
permission because this guide is copyrighted to me. The reason why this
guide was originally Zapping Ninja's guide but heavily modified was because
I was him but I created a new account since I didn't want the name Zapping
Ninja.
Special Thanks To:
- You, for reading my guide.
