I've decided to call this section #0 because it has absolutely nothing
to do with the game, but it has to be said. So here goes:
DragonBall Z is copyright by Funimation (tm). I have absolutely no
affiliation with Funimation and will be using terms and mentioning
characters from the TV show DragonBall Z for non-profit purposes only.
I am also no in any way affiliated with the team behind ESF (Earth's
Special Forces). This FAQ is purely the creation of a fan of this great
mod and is, as previously mentioned, created for non-profit purposes
only.
Which brings us to this FAQ. This FAQ is copyright (C) 2003 by T.U.I.

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::introduction
Just about everybody knows what Half-Life is, but just in case you've
been living under a rock for the past few years, I'll go ahead and
enlighten you. Half-Life is a first-person shooter for the PC developed
by VALVe Studios (no, that's not a mistype) and Sierra. It completely
revolutionized the first-person genre and carved itself a place in
gaming history.
Put simply, it's the best first-person shooter ever made.
It's also fairly easy to make a mod for this game. I say fairly easy
because VALVe Studios realized that fans would want to make their own
games using the Half-Life Engine, so they decided to go ahead and
accomodate them as best as they could. The result? Literally hundreds,
perhaps even thousands of Half-Life mods exist. From offical mods, such
as "Opposing Force" and "Blue Shift," to the incredibly popular "Team
Fortress Classic" and "Counter-Strike," and fan mods such as "Rocket
Crowbar" and "Science and Industry," there are tons of choices for the
Half-Life fan to choose from.
All this finally brings us to "Earth's Special Forces," a DragonBall Z
mod for Half-Life. Again, just about everybody knows something about
DragonBall Z. For those of you who downloaded ESF just because you
thought it looked cool, I urge you to do at least do some research on
DragonBall Z so that you can understand some of the places and
characters in the game. I am going to write this FAQ as if you already
know something of the storyline and characters of DragonBall Z, so if I
mention something, and you have no clue what I'm referring to, don't
come crying to me about it.

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::ESF Quick FAQ
This quick FAQ will cover some of the basic questions about ESF
without going into any major detail. If you're looking for a detailed
explanation about something, skip down a couple sections.
Q0) What is ESF?
A0) ESF is a great multiplayer-only mod for Half-Life. It is based on
the Japanese anime "DragonBall Z."
Q1) I've heard a lot about another DragonBall Z mod for Half-Life
called "DragonMod Z." Is ESF better than DMZ? How do the two compare?
A1) I've devoted an entire section of this FAQ to comparing ESF and
DMZ. Hopefully reading that section will help you decide which one you
want to invest your time downloading.
Q2) Where can I download ESF?
A2) You can get ESF at
http://www.esforces.com
Q3) Are there bots for ESF?
A3) Yes there are. You can download them at
http://www.esforces.com
Q4) Why should I read this FAQ? Doesn't ESF come with a manual?
A4) Yes, ESF does come with a manual, but as far as I know it hasn't
been updated since Beta 1. Thus, some things about it aren't completely
accurate and others flat out wrong. Case in point: despite what the
manual would lead you to believe, Gohan does NOT get the Kamehameha
attack until after becoming a Super Saiyan.
Q5) How many characters/classes are there in ESF?
A5) There are nine characters you can choose from in ESF. They are
Goku, Gohan (teen), Krillin, Trunks (adult), Piccolo, Vegeta, Frieza,
Imperfect Cell, and Majin Buu.
Q6) What weapons do you get in ESF?
A6) Only two major classes of weapons: melee and Genki attacks. The
melee attacking is different from most mods, and will be explained in
detail later. The Genki attacks drain your Genki (or simply Ki) pool,
and you must "power up" to refill that pool. This will all be explained
in detail later.
Q7) Dude! It's in third person mode! What's up with that?
A7) Third person is the default mode of play for ESF, and trust me, it
works out just fine. However, you can switch it to first person if it's
bothering you that much; just bind a key to "First-Person Toggle" and
press it while in game.
Q8) Ummm - how do I know what attack I have selected?
A8) Skip down to the section on the HUD for the answer to this
question.
Q9) I've selected my melee attack, and I'm pressing my primary attack
button, but nothing's happening!
A9) Remember what I said earlier? Melee in ESF is different than in
other mods. It has a whole section devoted to it, so go ahead and skip
down there if you're looking for more information about melee attacks.
Q10) I was just standing there, minding my own business, when all of a
sudden I went flying across the screen, totally out of control! What
happened to me?
A10) You were hit by a melee attack. It's very difficult to see a melee
attack coming unless you're looking straight at the opponent and/or
you're watching your scouter closely. For information on recovering
from melee attacks, jump down to the "Struggles" section.
Q11) Is there a radar in this game?
A11) Yes. Each character is equipped with a scouter than can perform
various functions; one of which is a radar. Jump down to the section
on the HUD for more information.
Q12) My power level is high enough to ascend/transform, but I can't do
it! Why not?
A12) Are you turbocharged? Your ability to ascend is based on your
power level when you are not turbocharged, so it's possible for your
power level to read beyond what you need to ascend, yet still be unable
to do so.
Q13) I'm getting pwned by some punk*** fool! What should I do?
A13) Practice, practice, practice! It takes practice to get the hang of
this mod, especially the melee attacks.
Q14) Do you play ESF online often? What's your screen name?
A14) I play whenever I get a chance. However, I don't have broadband
internet, so I usually only end up playing whenever I'm at a friend's
house. My screen name is -[JFx]-AlwaysAFK, so if you see me online,
say hello! ^_^

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::ESF vs DMZ
I'm about to commit a major faux pax (spelling?). Many DBZ fanboys will
complain and whine and say something like "ESF and DMZ are totally
different games...you can't compare them!"
To which I say, "Yes, they are different games. All the more reason for
me to compare them!"
So that's what I'm about to do: compare Earth's Special Forces and
Dragon Mod Z (another DBZ mod for Half-Life) and hopefully give you an
idea which one you want to spend your time downloading.
:::GRAPHICS
-----------
The models in both ESF and DMZ are well done and look beautiful when
standing still; however, the animation in ESF is head and shoulders
above that of DMZ. The running, swimming, and flying animations are
very smooth and look beautiful while maintaining a good frame rate,
while in DMZ the same animations are only mediocre.
:::SOUND
--------
Both games fare rather well in sound. Nothing extremely special in
either one, so I can't say that either one is "better" in this area.
:::MUSIC
--------
When you download ESF, you're also downloading a custom MP3 soundtrack
to go along with it. The music is perfect; it matches the mood of the
game and the style of gameplay and puts you in the mood to kick some
serious butt. Conversely, the music in DragonMod Z is, well, boring,
and doesn't inspire any such butt-kicking mood.
:::CONTROLS
-----------
Here's where it's a matter of preference. To perform special moves in
DMZ, you have to hit a series of buttons followed by the "KI" button,
much like performing special moves in a traditional fighting game. In
ESF, performing special moves is simply a matter of choosing the attack
using the traditional weapon select keys and pressing the fire button.
It's your choice.
:::MAPS
-------
Both games have well designed maps, but nothing special. Both games
have maps from various locations, such as Planet Namek, Goku's House,
Kami's Lookout, etc. I personally prefer the maps from ESF; however,
this is also a matter of personal preference.
:::BUGS
-------
Both of these games are fan mods; conversely, you would expect each one
to have its fair amount of bugs. Surprisingly, I found ESF to be bug-
free so far (when I come across any bugs, I'll let you know). I also
only found one bug in DMZ; however, it came up quite frequently and
constantly wreaked havoc in any multiplayer games I played. The
Kamehameha special attack has a tendency to get stuck in DMZ, forcing
you to kill yourself to continue.
UPDATE: I have discovered a few bugs in ESF. They are mainly server-
crashing issues, and should be fixed soon. The disc-based moves and the
Shield that Gohan gets have a tendency to cause servers to get laggy,
so you're banned from using those moves on most servers.
:::GAMEPLAY
-----------
Both games feature similar gameplay; you run, walk, or fly through the
levels, killing your opponents to raise your power level. Raising your
power level high enough allows you to transform, becoming even more
powerful. However, DMZ also features a pseudo-RPG element, in that as
your power level rises you are given the option to choose to increase
your attack, defense, or speed stats.

:::GAME MODES
-------------
There are only three modes of play: Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch and
Capture the Dragonballs. Team Deathmatch is just that; a team
deathmatch. Deathmatch is just team deathmatch, minus the "team" part.
Capture the Dragonballs is a very unique mode of play that is still in
beta testing right now (so experiment at your own risk). In this mode
of play, seven Dragonballs are hidden across the map and each team
tries to find them and bring them all to the same place. Once they're
all brought to the same place, the team can make a wish (and gets
points for it!). Different wishes give your team different advantages
(ex: wish for immortality to gain a temporary invincibility).
Like I said, Capture the Dragonballs is still in beta testing, so
experiment at your own risk. It's very buggy, and will commonly crash
the server (so you'll very rarely see an internet game that's playing
Capture the Dragonballs).
But it will be fixed in later versions; it's currently their biggest
project.

:::MULTIPLAYER OPTIONS
----------------------
These are the options available under the "Advanced" menu when creating
a multiplayer LAN or Internet game.
Frag Limit: When someone reaches this many kills, the game ends. Leave
this at zero for no limit.
Time Limit: The time (in minutes) that the battle will last. Leave this
at zero for no limit.
Wish Limit: In Capture the Dragonballs mode, the team that makes this
many wishes first wins, and the game ends. Leave this at zero for no
limit.
Fall Damage: Normal causes characters to take no damage even when
falling from incredible heights. Realistic will cause high falls to
cause damage.
Game Mode: Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, or Capture the Dragonballs.
Real Good/Evil Teams: Select this box to force certain characters to
appear on certain teams. Goku, Gohan, Krillin, Trunks, and Piccolo are
forced to play on the "Good" team, while Vegeta, Frieza, Cell, and Buu
are forced to play on the "Evil" team.
Friendly Fire: If selected, you can harm your teammates with your
attacks.
Get Powerlevel Closer to Server's Average on Dead: Select this box to
cause players to get a powerlevel that is closer to the average level
on the server when they die. This serves as a balancing factor.
Multiple PS'ing in Free Deathmatch Mode: Allows characters to engage in
power struggles with more than one person.
Force Respawn: Automatically respawns characters after they die.
Footsteps: Allows you to hear other players footsteps.
Lock Models: Not quite sure what this one does; play around with it and
see.
Low Ping Server Physics: Causes the server to attempt more realistics
physics calculations when the average ping is low.

^ Charge Meter
:::THE RETICLE
--------------
Much like any other reticle in Half-Life, except that it does not
change when different weapons are selected. When you are pointing
directly at another player, the reticle will change color. It will turn
green if you are pointing at a friend; red if you are pointing at an
enemy.
:::THE CHARGE METER
-------------------
The Charge Meter appears on the bottom of the screen whenever you are
charging up an attack. These attacks have to be charged AT LEAST to the
yellow line; however, you can charge them much further to make them
more powerful.
:::THE HEALTH BAR
-----------------
On the lower-left corner of the game screen are three bars. The lowest
bar displays how much health you have left, both numerically and
visually in the form of a red meter.
:::THE KI METER
---------------
Directly above the health bar is the Ki meter. This tells you two
things. First, the number displayed in the Ki meter tells you what your
current Power Level is. The higher this number, the more powerful your
attacks will be, and the closer you are to being able to transform. The
second thing the bar tells you is the amount of Ki you currently have
available for use. The more Ki you have, the more Ki you can put into
your attacks to make them stronger, faster, etc...
:::THE MULTI DISPLAY
--------------------
The top bar is split into three main areas. On the far left is the Form
Change Meter, abbreviated CF (change form). This bar shows you how
close you are to being able to transform or ascend to your next most
powerful state (more on that later). When this bar is full, you can
press the "Ascend" key (default "Z") to move to your next form.
Next to the Form Change Meter is a meter which shows how many Sensu
Beans your are currently carrying (Sensu Beans can be found hidden in
certain levels and will completely refill your health). It is denoted
by a picture of a Sensu Bean.
Next to the Sensu Bean Counter is a small box which displays an
animation telling you what attack you currently have selected. (When
you spawn or ascend, you will have your melee attack selected by
default.) You can consult the ESF manual (found the ESF folder of your
Half-Life directory) for a glossary on which animations represent each
attack.
:::THE SCOUTER
--------------
Early on in DragonBall Z, scouters played a key role in the storyline.
Scouters detect energy signals in a manner very similar to Bulma's
Dragon Radar; however, the scouter can also be used to measure an
opponent's power level and to detect high energy sources from long
distances.
Raditz, Goku's brother, was the first person to use the scouter in the
show when he used it to locate Goku on Planet Earth. Vegeta and Nappa,
Raditz' commanding officers, also used the scouters, although Vegeta
soon learned how to sense Ki with his mind and thus had no use for the
scouter. Frieza, the second major villain in the series, had his plan
to steal the Dragonballs of Namek completely spoiled when a Namek Elder
destroyed all of the scouters that he had access to. By the time
Captain Ginyu arrived with replacements, the countdown to his
destruction had already begun.
On the side of the screen, about three-quarters of the way up, is your
own personal scouter. You can toggle this on or off using the Scouter
key (default "F9"). The Scouter has two functions. First, it serves as
a sort of radar, showing you the locations of your friends and nearby
enemies. Second, when you point directly at another player, it will
tell you their name, class (character), and current power level.
You can toggle the functions that the Scouter performs by pressing the
Scouter key. Pressing it once puts the Scouter in Mixed Mode; it will
function both as a radar and an information device. Pressing it again
will put it in Radar Mode, and pressing it again will put it in Info
Mode. Press it once more to remove the Scouter.

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::basic controls
This section will cover all of the basics of ESF. By the time you're
through reading this section, you'll know everything there is to know
about the controls of the game.
:::MOVEMENT
-----------
Movement in ESF is the same as any other Half-Life mod. Use the
keyboard to move forward and backward and to strafe left and right. Use
the mouse to turn left and right and to aim up and down. The mouse is
also used to fire your currently selected weapon.
You also use the keyboard to jump. The longer you hold down the jump
key, the higher your jump will be. But I warn you: jumping takes Ki,
and the higher you jump, the more Ki you will drain (although it is a
relatively small amount).
There's also another movement technique called "Beam Jumping." This
allows you to use a beam attack to propel yourself in a direction. To
do this, hold down the "Jump" button as you fire any beam and you will
be propelled in the opposite direction as the beam. Useful for moving
across the map quickly.
Note: you cannot duck in ESF.
:::FLYING/TELEPORTING
---------------------
To fly, tap the "Fly" button to toggle flying mode. While flying mode
is activated, moving forward and backward will move you straight
forward and straight backward in the direction you're currently
pointing. To move straight up, press and hold the Jump key.
Flying costs Ki, and as long as you're flying, you will slowly drain
your Ki meter. If your Ki drains completely, you will stop flying and
will fall to the ground.
Teleporting is more straightforward. While moving, tap the "Teleport"
key to teleport a short distance in the direction you're moving. This
is a handy way to avoid attacks; however, there is no guarantee that
the teleport will keep you away from the blast radius of a powerful
Ki wave. Each time you teleport, it will cost you a small amount of Ki.
:::TURBOCHARGING
----------------
By focusing one's Ki, one can temporarily raise their power level.
Raditz was the first victim of the Turbocharge in DragonBall Z. His
scouter was not capable of showing the true power level of his
opponents, Piccolo and Goku. Using a combination of speed and strategy,
they were able to defeat Raditz, although the victory cost Goku his
life.
Turbocharging is a method that allows you to boost your Power Level at
the expense of Ki. As long as you are turbocharged, your Ki will drain
at a steady rate. However, while turbocharged, all of your attacks are
more powerful, and you run and fly much faster.
To toggle turbo mode, press the "Turbo" button. While turbocharged, an
aura will surround your character, so you can tell by looking at
anybody whether or not they are turbocharged.
:::POWERING UP
--------------
All of your attacks will cost you a certain amount of Ki, and when that
meter drops to zero, you cannot attack. However, you can refill your Ki
meter by powering up. It only takes a few seconds to power up your
meter to full, but you are completely vulerable during that time! To
power up, holding down the "Power Up" key. While you hold it down,
a distinctive aura will surround your character and he will recharge
his Ki.
Note: there is no way to refill your health meter outside of using a
Senzu Bean. The only exception to this is Majin Buu, who has a move
which transfers Ki to health at a slow rate.
:::USING SPECIAL MOVES
----------------------
Special moves aren't particularly difficult, but I figured I might as
well discuss it at some point. This sounds like a good enough point
for me, so here we go!
Firing special moves is as easy as pressing the left mouse button...
almost. Some special moves; I take that back - MOST special moves HAVE
to be charged before they can be fired. Simply charge up the attack
until the charge meter reaches the little white line, and you can fire.
However, if you wish, can charge PAST that point, thus making the
attack more powerful. Of course, it will use more Ki and will take
longer, so use your judgement.
:::MELEE
--------
Although DragonBall Z is most known for elaborate, drawn-out, Ki waves
and long-range attacks, the characters do their fair share of hand-to-
hand combat. But this combat is more than simply the hack-and-slash
action of other anime. It's much more stylish than that.
Melee in ESF is the most unique of any Half-Life mod in existence.
Rather than walking up to an opposing character and slashing/smacking
them with your weapon, you will initiate your melee attack from a
distance. Once initiated, you will then swoop down on your unsuspecting
victim and knock them across the map.
Follow these steps to successfully perform a melee attack.
1) Make sure that Melee is your currently selected weapon. Melee is
always set to be your first weapon, so the default key to select Melee
is "1".
2) Next, aim at your opponent. When the reticle turns red, click the
left mouse button to target him. Your opponent will remain targeted as
long as he is in your visual range. If he leaves that range for more
than 3-4 seconds, the target will be lost.
3) Now here's the kicker. To begin melee, you must press the left mouse
button, and then immediately press and hold the right mouse button. You
will now begin to swoop down at your enemy AT THE COST OF KI! Remember
that you cannot melee without enough KI, so don't EVER get caught
without Ki.
4) You will have to follow your opponent by keeping your reticle within
the targeting box. If you are sucessful, he will take massive damage
and go flying across the screen.
So what should you do if you are attacked by melee? Well, the first
thing you should do is press the left mouse button. When hit with a
melee attack, your character begins to plummet out of control across
the map. If he hits a wall, he will take more damage and fall to the
ground. However, if you have some Ki, you can click the left mouse
button to stop your character.
The same thing applies when you hit the ground. You can press the left
mouse button to get up when you hit the ground; again, at the cost of
Ki (everything costs Ki in this game!!). If you don't have Ki, your
character will lie on the ground for a while before getting up.
:::ASCENDING/TRANSFORMING
-------------------------
The concept of transforming was first introduced in the precursor to
DragonBall Z: the original DragonBall. The main character, Goku, would
transform into a giant ape at the sight of a full moon; a
transformation that he could not control. Other characters who could
transform in DragonBall Z included Gohan, Goten, Trunks, Vegeta,
Frieza, Cell, Zarbon, Majin Buu, and a host of others.
Even though characters such as Piccolo and Krillin never could
"transform," ESF gives these characters the ability to "ascend" beyond
their current state once their power level is high enough. Heck, it's
only fair!
Transforming is as simple as forgetting to shower, although it's a lot
less smelly. Just press the "Transform/Ascend" key, which defaults to
"Z". Then sit back, and watch the show as your character transforms.
Sometimes, especially in the case of Goku, it's quite a sight to see.
When transformed, your power level is multiplied by either 2 or 1.5,
depending upon the character. This will [obviously] increase the power
of your attacks, increase your speed, and decrease your charge time.
Certain characters will automatically descend to their original state
if their Ki is completely depleted. You will have to press the ascend
key to return to their more powerful state, but fortunately it will
take slightly less time to complete the transformation.
As your power level continues to rise, the time it takes for your
character to transform decreases. This time will continue to descrease
until the transformation is instantaneous. This is referred to as the
"Perfect Transformation," and is extremely handy in the middle of
battle.
Currently, each character has only one transformation, but later
versions of ESF have promised to add second and third transformations,
which I personally can't wait for! Super Saiyan 3 Goku will OWN YOU!
:::STRUGGLING
-------------
Characters in DragonBall Z never allow themselves to simply be blown
away by a massive Ki wave. Rather, they prefer to push them aside,
shove them back, block them, disperse them, or at least attempt to do
one of the above before being destroyed.
There are two ways to block/return a Ki wave or Ki bomb. First, you can
hold down the "block" key. While in block mode, small Ki blasts will be
automatically swatted aside and larget Ki waves will initiate a
struggle (more on that in a minute). The other way is to fire a Ki
wave of your own into your opponents wave. This will also initiate a
struggle.
During a power struggle, a bar will appear on the right side of the
screen, like so:
---------------------------
| |
| _____|
| / |
| \____/|
| |
| (*) _ |
| | ||
| | ||
|[|][][**] |-|| <-- Struggle Bar
|[-------] | ||
|[-------] |_||
---------------------------
The bar is divided into two sections: a red and a blue section.
Somewhere on this bar will be a small yellow line. This line will
indicate whether or not you are winning the struggle. If the line is in
the blue section, you are winning. If it is in the red section, you are
losing.
To successfully perform a power struggle, simply hold down the primary
fire key; i.e., the left mouse button. While in a power struggle you
will slowly drain your Ki (did you expect otherwise). This Ki will be
put into the wave in an effort to either shove it aside (if you used
the block button to initiate) or to push it back (if you fired your
own wave to initiate). But be warned. The more you struggle, the
stronger the wave becomes. Sometimes it can become so powerful that
when it finally does explode, the blast radius is large enough and the
wave strong enough that EVERYBODY on the map dies (with the exception
of teammates).

Although he was raised to believe he was human, Goku was actually born
on Planet Vegeta, home to a viscious alien race known as the Saiyans.
He was sent to Planet Earth as a baby with the instructions to destroy
every person on the planet, thus making it available to sell to the
highest bidder. This is what Saiyans do: conquer planets and sell them.
But something happened. As a young child, Goku fell from a large height
and developed a serious case of amnesia. The incident caused him to
forget the instructions imprinted on his brain, including his real
name: Kakarrot. He was adopted by an elderly gentleman, Gohan, who
raised him as his grandchild.
As an adult, Goku is married to Chi-Chi and has two children: Gohan
and Goten. He is the main character of DragonBall Z and is directly
responsible for the defeat of the four main villains of the series:
Vegeta, Frieza, Cell, and Majin Buu.
Goku's transformation is that of Super Saiyan. He first reached this
powerful state during the battle with Frieza. After his best friend,
Krillin, was killed by Frieza, Goku's rage caused a hidden power within
him to be released, causing him to transform into a Super Saiyan. He is
the first of his race to perform this transformation in many millenia.
While a Syper Saiyan, Goku is extremely powerful and fast, and has the
ability to teleport while charging his attacks. He cannot, however, use
the Spirit Bomb.

1) MELEE
See "Basic Controls" for information about Melee.
2) KI BLAST
A basic Ki Blast. Does a small amount of damage, but can be fired at a
fast rate and the blasts travel at a fast speed. Secondary fire causes
you to fire Ki Blasts at a faster rate. If enough Ki Blasts are
detonated close to each other, a Ki Blob will be formed, and anyone inside the
blob will take damage while they are inside. Ki Blasts can
be thrown into the Blob to increase its size up to a point.
3) KI BEAM
A basic Ki Beam that must be charged and can be controlled. It takes
very little time to charge; however, it is not very powerful. Useful
when you need a quick attack that is more powerful than the Ki Blast.
4) KAMEHAMEHA
A powerful beam attack with a large blast radius and good speed. This
is Goku's staple attack; use it often. If charged all the way, it will
drain most of your Ki, so be careful. It's a good idea to try to power
back up after firing this attack.
5) SPIRIT BOMB (Available only in non-transformed state)
The most powerful non-beam attack in the game. The Spirit Bomb borrows
a small amount of Ki from every living thing in the vicinity and
gathers it into a giant ball of energy. It has no Ki drain on Goku, but
it has a MASSIVE charge time. Use it only when you've got your team
protecting you, or everybody else is on the other side of the map. But
if you can charge this thing up to its maximum power (takes close to
thirty seconds) and can fire it where the action is, you're guaranteed
two or three kills.
If you want a slightly less powerful, but more versatile version of the
spirit bomb, hold down secondary fire. Goku charges up a much smaller
bomb, much like the one he uses against Vegeta and Turless. You can use
this in normal battles; however, you still can't move while charging or
holding it, so it still has limited uses (but the fact that it doesn't
cost any Ki at all can be useful).
6) SOLAR FLARE
A trick taught to the Z-Fighters by Tien. While the manual claims that
it can only be used once per life, I haven't noticed this to be true.
When used, Goku yells "SOLAR FLARE!" and uses a MASSIVE amount of Ki to
generate a blinding flash. Anybody within the radius of the attack is
completely blinded for a period of time. It has strategic value; use it
to escape from an enemy who is chasing you.
7) STATIONARY KI BALL
This attack isn't mentioned in the manual, so I don't know what to call
it. Use primary fire to generate small Ki balls which hover in place.
You can then use secondary fire to fire those balls into your opponent.
I find it to be practically useless and have yet to launch a successful
attack with it.
UPDATE: I have found one use for this attack: a flare. You can use this
to light up dark areas (I found it particularly useful in the Caves).

9) SENSU BEANS
If you have a Sensu Bean, use primary fire to regain health. You can

Named for Goku's grandfather, Gohan is the oldest son of Goku. He was
first trained for fighting by Piccolo in preparation for the arrival of
the Saiyan leaders on Planet Earth. After they were defeated, Gohan,
Krillin, and Bulma traveled to Planet Namek, where they found Frieza.
Gohan aided in the fight against Frieza, although it was Super Saiyan
Goku who delivered the final blow.
In ESF you play as Gohan later on in his life: while he is a teenager.
He has grown stronger, and has learned to become a Super Saiyan. This
is his transformation. Although this is not the most powerful Gohan
becomes in the series, we're just going to have to live with it.
While Gohan is not as strong as some of the other characters, he can
make his transformation to Super Saiyan much faster than Goku or
Vegeta, thus giving him a head-start on the competition. Makes sense,
considering Gohan was a child wonder when it came to fighting!

ban you from using it.

Krillin is Goku's best friend. Despite his short stature, he is the
same age as Goku and trained with Goku under Master Roche during the
original TV series "Dragon Ball." Krillin has always played a
significant backround role in the show; for example, it was Krillin's
death at the hands of the evil Frieza that enraged Goku to the point of
transforming into a Super Saiyan.
Although a formidable force at the beginning of the show, Krillin's
power never increased as much as other character, so he began to play
less and less of a role as the show went on. After the defeat of Cell,
Krillin married Android 18 and they now have a daughter, although how
a human and an android have children is completely beyond me.
Krillin's transformation is completely made up in ESF, as are his
excellent stats once transformed. While it is true that Krillin does
have hair towards the end of the series, he never has the massively
high stats that he has in this game (and the hair doesn't come from
some crazy transformation). Of course, it takes friggin' forever to
reach a high enough power level to transform, so it's hard to tell if
his power comes from the transformation, or from that fact that he had
a huge power level to begin with!

5) DESTRUCTO DISK
What Krillin lacks in power he makes up for in technique: the Destructo
Disk is an INSTANT KILL! He almost killed Nappa with this, as well as
almost slicing Frieza right in half. It's a shame that this attack
crashes most servers; so you really can't use it unless you're playing

Heck, if you didn't know this guy was an alien just from looking at him
then I think you need help. Piccolo hails from Planet Namek and had a
life-long feud with Goku. He was evil at one point, but the love that
Gohan showed during their training changed Piccolo into a dedicated
friend of the entire family and one of the strongest of the Z-Fighters.
Piccolo is uniquely tied to the Guardian of the Earth, Kami. They are
connected in a strange way, in that if one of them dies, so does the
other. This almost proved to be the downfall of the entire world while
Piccolo was fighting Garlic Jr., for at the same time Kami was
spreading the Holy Water within the bowels of the lookout and being
attacked by the former guardians of the earth. Piccolo and Kami
eventually fused together into a single being during the Cell Saga, but
this turn of events caused the Dragon Balls which Kami had made to
disappear forever!
Piccolo doesn't really transform; rather, he raises his power level
through a rigorous meditation. Techically it still falls the
"transformation" category, but we know what it really is, don't we? -_^

Trunks first appeared in Dragon Ball Z as an adult. He had come back in
time to warn Goku and the others about events that were about to occur
in the future, in hopes that certain things could be prevented. His
first order of business was to destroy the reanimated Frieza, after
which he confided many secrets of what was to come to the only person
he knew he could trust: Goku.
Trunks is the son of an unlikely pair: Vegeta and Bulma. He's also an
illegitimate son; Vegeta and Bulma are not married until long after he
is born. Being part Saiyan, Trunks possesses the ability to become a
Super Saiyan, which is his transformation in this game.
Trunks is all about melee attacks, seeing as how he is armed with a
sword. If you like melee, then you will love Trunks. Trunks also has
the same advantage that Gohan does: he doesn't have to raise his power
level far to be able to transform.
So what's his weakness? First off, in addition to the generic attacks,
Trunks only has a single attack: the Burning Attack, which generally
sucks. Once transformed, he has access to a slightly better attack, but
even then it's not that great. Trunks is all about the melee, and I
mean ALL about the melee.

don't see much reason to use this over the Ki Beam. Sorry.
5) FINISHING BUSTER (Super Saiyan Only)

Vegeta. Prince of Saiyans, and overall jerk. Vegeta has always had a
superiority complex and unique ideas about battles and fighting in
general. He believes himself to be the strongest ever, and refuses to
accept the fact that Goku is superior. It is not until he observes the
showdown between Goku and Majin Buu that he finally realizes that
Goku truly is superior and the most he could ever hope to do is to
catch up.
Vegeta was the first major villain of the series. Along with his
henchman Nappa, he traveled to Earth to kill Goku and capture the
Dragon Balls, planning to wish for immortality. After being defeated,
he traveled to Planet Namek in hopes of finding the Dragon Balls
rumoured to be hidden there.
Vegeta was named for his home planet, which was ironically destroyed by
the very person that Vegeta had served his whole life: Frieza. Vegeta
finally turned against Frieza and assisted Krillin, Gohan, and Goku in
defeating Frieza on the surface of Planet Namek.
Obviously, Vegeta is a Saiyan, so he has the ability to become a Super
Saiyan. However, he is going to have the hardest time of any of the
other Saiyans in becoming one; he has to raise his power level 300,000
points higher than anyone else has to. But don't let this discourage
you from playing as Vegeta; he can easily be the biggest threat on any

Vegeta doesn't get the standard Ki Blast; rather, he gets a variation
called the Ki Assault. When charged, Vegeta releases a torrent of Ki
Blasts upon his opponent. These are just as easily blocked as regular
Ki Blasts; however, if one of them hits, all the rest are GUARANTEED to
hit! Also, if enough of them hit, they automatically form a Ki Blob
around the opponent. How cool is that?
Secondary fire launches standard Ki Blasts.

very little time to charge; however, it is not very powerful. Useful
when you need a quick attack that is more powerful than the Ki Blast.
4) GALLIT GUN
Vegeta's answer to the Kamehameha. It's slightly less powerful than
Goku's counterpart, but it charges quicker and moves slightly faster.
When charging, Vegeta's entire body glows a bright color, so it's
really easy to spot somebody who's about to fire this. Don't let that
stop you from using it though; it's Vegeta's only really good attack
before becoming a Super Saiyan.
5) BIG BANG (Super Saiyan only)
Sweet move. This is a non-beam attack that has a VERY large blast
radius and does INSANE damage. It's sort of his answer to the Spirit
Bomb, although it's not nearly so powerful. However, its fast speed and
low charge time basically completely make up for it. Just be careful
not to kill yourself with it - your power level will drop like a rock.
6) FINAL FLASH (Super Saiyan only)
OK. You wanted something more powerful than the Kamehameha? Here it is.
This is an INSANELY powerful beam attack; however, it has an equally
INSANE Ki cost. It's also very slow. However, it's easily one of the
most powerful Ki waves in the game; heck, I'd say it is THE most
powerful Ki wave in the game. Use this, and use it often.

I swear, this guy is just nasty. Frieza is a sort of intergalactic
bully who goes around doing just about whatever he wants. He's also
insanely powerful; easily killing Vegeta and Krillin without even
trying. However, he did receive a serious butt-whipping when Goku
finally made the transformation to Super Saiyan.
Frieza has had a longstanding relationship with the Saiyans; he often
buys planets from them for his own uses. However, he started to worry
about their power and destroyed their planet and the entire race just
to be safe. The only Saiyans who survived were Vegeta, who Frieza took
for his assistant, Nappa and Raditz, who also served Frieza, and
Kakarrot, who Frieza did not even know existed.
I'm not exactly sure what kind of creature Frieza is, but he's some
sort of nasty. He begins in the state you see him in the game: a sort
of shrimpy little white and pink dude with a tail and small horns. But
it gets worse...this guy has three transformations!
We only get access to Frieza's first transformation in this game, but
later versions of the game will let you play as Frieza's second and

Cell. Enigma. Creation. Unique. Creepy.
Yep, that's Cell. The creation of the evil Dr. Gero, Cell is formed
from the cells of some of the strongest fighters in history, including
Frieza, Vegeta, and even Goku! No surprise then that Cell actually is
from the future, using the same technology that Trunks used to get back
in time. No surprise either that Cell wants to stop Trunks and make
sure that the future doesn't change.
Cell doesn't transform directly (in the TV show, at least). Rather, he
transforms by absorbing others; the Androids, specifically. After
absorbing all the Androids (including 18, the one that Krillin was in
love with), he became Perfect Cell (a form which we unfortunately don't
get to see in this game - not yet anyway).
So what's with Cell? He's always been a sort of mystery to me, and I've
never really quite understood what his deal is. But as far as ESF goes,
I can tell you exactly who he is. Cell is the jack-of-all-trades
character. He doesn't have particularly high stamina (although he is
fairly fast) and he has the signature moves of all of the other
characters. So if you're not sure which character to use, pick Cell.
You won't be disappointed.

:::SPECIAL MOVES
----------------
Note: Cell has three attacks on the same weapon slot; weapon slot 4.
Press "4" to cycle through these weapons.
4) GALLIT GUN
Vegeta's answer to the Kamehameha. It's slightly less powerful than
Goku's counterpart, but it charges quicker and moves slightly faster.
When charging, Cell's entire body glows a bright color, so it's
really easy to spot somebody who's about to fire this. So it's up to
you whether to use this attack or the Kamehameha.
4) KAMEHAMEHA (Press "4" twice)
A powerful beam attack with a large blast radius and good speed. If
charged all the way, it will drain most of your Ki, so be careful. It's
a good idea to try to power back up after firing this attack.
4) SPECIAL BEAM CANNON (Press "4" three times)
This was Piccolo's staple attack. Despite the way it looks, it's
classified as a "non-beam attack," doing massive damage and traveling
at a decent speed. It also has a large blast radius. As soon as it has
fired, you can start charging up another one, and fortunately it has a
very low charge time.
5) FRIEZA DISK
Something like Krillin's Destructo Disk, only faster and can be
controlled. You can also use the secondary fire button to recall the
disk to your hand, allowing you to throw it again. Unfortunately, It
also suffers the same fate as Krillin's disk; it crashes the server
(sucks, don't it?). Consequently, most servers will ban you if you use
this weapon, so just try to forget that it even exists.
6) SOLAR FLARE
A trick taught to the Z-Fighters by Tien. While the manual claims that
it can only be used once per life, I haven't noticed this to be true.
When used, Cell yells "SOLAR FLARE!" and uses a MASSIVE amount of Ki to
generate a blinding flash. Anybody within the radius of the attack is
completely blinded for a period of time. It has strategic value; use it
to escape from an enemy who is chasing you.
7) This weapon slot is empty.
8) This weapon slot is empty.
9) SENSU BEANS
If you have a Sensu Bean, use primary fire to regain health. You can
also use secondary fire to toss the bean to a teammate.

A demon of old, Majin Buu was originally called forth by the wizard
Bibidi. He was defeated in the ancient days and sealed within a cage,
never to be awakened. But guess what? A descendent of Bibidi, the
wizard Babidi, released Majin Buu and brought him back into the world
as a weapon through which he would enslave mankind.
Bibidi. Babidi. Buu. Don't ask.
Majin Buu is a fat little creature that has the power of an army of
Friezas and the mind of a small child. He has no qualms about "making
things go boom" or "making you dead" simply because he finds it fun
(reminds me of that little kid I met in Wal*Mart the other day). He is
completely evil; yet at the same time has a streak of goodness that he
obtained when he absorbed one of the Kais long ago.
Majin Buu's transformations were completely unplanned and spontaneous.
His first transformation was that of Evil Buu; as a matter of fact, it
wasn't even a true transformation. After a sniper killed Buu's only
friend, a puppy he named Bee, Majin Buu finally realized the pain of
death and expelled all of the evil from his body in the form of the
Evil Buu. The two went into a battle to the death, but in the end it
was the Evil Buu who won. Evil Buu absorbed the Good Buu into his body,
and the result was a newly incarnated and far stronger Majin Buu.
Majin Buu has the highest starting level of any other character in the
game, accurately reflecting the fact that he was the strongest villain
that the Z-Fighters encountered in the series. His transformation is
that of the Evil Buu (not the combination of Evil Buu and Good Buu),
which is rather odd considering that Evil Buu only appears in a single
episode of Dragon Ball Z. Oh well. I'm not complaining.

4) CANDY ATTACK
In the series, getting hit with this attack would instantly transform
you into a yummy treat of Buu's choosing. Using this attack will slowly
drain your opponent's health as long as it is in contact with them.
Once they reach 2 HP, using this attack allows you to transform them
into a piece of candy, which will restore your HP when you take it.
5) MOUTH BLAST
Buu's staple attack. This is a fast-moving, powerful beam attack that
has a small blast radius. Keep in mind that Buu cannot move while
charging this attack, so it requires a good opening to be able to use.
6) REGENERATION
Select this weapon and then hold down primary fire to SLOWLY transfer
your Ki into your health. It takes a LONG time to completely heal
yourself, but it can be done if necessary (just make sure you've got a
pretty dang good hiding place).
7) This weapon slot is empty.
8) This weapon slot is empty.
9) Majin Buu cannot use Sensu Beans! Sucks, don't it? Oh well. He does
have the regeneration special attack, so use that instead.

Unfortunately, I have absolutely no idea what place this map is
supposed to represent. If I did, I'd tell you right here, but since I
don't know, I guess you'll just have to remain in the dark.
AFM is your basic map. It consists of a U-shaped canyon with an
elevated brick road running through the canyon. The Good team spawns on
one end of the "U" and the Evil team spawns on the other end of the
"U." There are also a number of large towers situated throughout the
map that can be used for "sniping" or for hiding behind.
AFM is a good, all-around map, although it's not all that interesting.
It has a lot of good places to hide while transforming, but then again,
lots of places to hide can make for some slower-paced fighting.
There are no Sensu Beans in AFM, making it an even more basic map.

Contrary to what the name might imply, this map is NOT a replication of
the typical battle arena found throughout Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball
Z. The Battle Arena map is built on a small asteroid in outer space and
contains two dome-like buildings, each with an emblem of a dragon
etched on the floor. The Evil team spawns in the building with the dark
dragon and the Good team spawns in the building with the white dragon.
Each building is circular and has three windows around the edge. Two of
these windows have tunnels below them which lead to a basement (each
tunnel leads to a separate basement). The third window is just that; a
window.
There is a small open area between the two buildings, but it doesn't
offer much fighting space. This is basically an indoor map; some
skirmishes will occur inside the buildings, but there's enough places
to hide indoors that fighting outside would just get boring.
There are no Sensu Beans on this map either.

Both of these maps depict the Cell Games Arena. One is at daytime and

say "primarily?" These are TOTALLY outdoor arenas. The only places to

Yep; totally Plane Jane battle arena. Don't be looking for anything
special. Good for one-on-one battles if you want to adhere to the
traditional battle rule: stay on the platform and don't touch the
ground outside. Fun stuff.

Just your generic city with loads of skyscrapers. This is a good map
for a large group of players because it's such a huge map. OK; so maybe
it's not all that huge, but the sheer amount of skyscrapers makes it
easy to lose someone. It's a good terrain map that offers a fun
challenge against a large number of foes.
Just wish you could blow up those skyscrapers. Bring on Half Life 2!

A generic cave map. This map is shaped like a donut, with a giant
column of rock in the center. The border of the map is a solid rock
wall that has a hollowed-out passageway about half-way up. This
passageway looks out into the center of the map and is shrouded in
darkness, making it the perfect place to "snipe" or ascend.
And yes, there are Sensu Beans on this map. FINALLY! Gosh, why'd they
even put these in there if only a few maps have them??
One of the Sensu Beanbags is on the bottom of the map, against the
outside wall. The second beanbag is in the inner passageway, concealed
in the darkness. The final beanbag is close to the second, but is
closer to the inside of the map.

non-descript map, and there really isn't any good way to describe where

strategy.
I know there are Sensu Beans on this map by looking at the BSP file,

This time, I can't find any of them. I really need to motivate myself

:::ABOUT ESF_ROSAT.BSP

I'm not exactly sure what's up with this map. It looks like this is a
map that somebody started but never finished. I would suggest staying
away from this map whenever playing ESF.

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::|_|::::::::server eqtiquette
This section is also known as "How to trick people into thinking that
you're not a n00b."
These are a few rules to follow when playing ESF. Break them, and you
will just end up pissing people off. You'll get kicked off of the
servers and possibly banned if you break the rules too often.
RULE #1: Choose a screen name
-----------------------------
Okay, so you won't get kicked off of servers for never choosing a
screen name other than "esfnoob." But getting onto a server with the
name "esfnoob" is kinda like saying "Hey Look! I'm a complete n00b!
Please come pwn me so that I will never come back!!"
RULE #2: Never use banned specials
----------------------------------
The following moves are currently banned: Gohan's Shield Attack,
Krillin's Destructo Disk, Frieza's Disk, and Cell's Disk. Why? Well,
ESF is still in beta, remember? These particular moves have a horrible
tendency to lag up servers, causing massive problems all over. Trust
me, EVERYBODY on the server will be yelling and cursing at you if you
break this rule.
RULE #3: Never attack somebody during a power struggle
------------------------------------------------------
Yes, I know it's tempting to hit somebody with a Spirit Bomb while they
are in the middle of a power struggle, but it's HORRIBLE etiquette.
Doing this will make people even madder than if you use banned special
attacks. Generally attacking people while they're defenseless is
considered bad karma, which leads us directly to...
RULE #4: Never attack somebody while they are transforming
----------------------------------------------------------
If you get killed due to a nearby explosion while transforming, that's
considered to be your own stupid fault. However, directly attacking
somebody while they're transforming is considered EXTREMELY bad
etiquette and will SEVERELY anger others on the server. Got the
picture?
RULE #5: Never complain about cheap tactics
-------------------------------------------
If you're getting owned, whatever you do, do NOT complain that others
on the server are using "cheap tactics." Case in point - one guy (whose
screen name shall remain annonymous) was constantly complaining that he
was getting killed from long range by a Piccolo using the Special Beam
Cannon. He accused Piccolo of cheap tactics, taunted him, and dared him
to fight him face to face "like a man." Whatever you do - do NOT do
something like this. It makes you look like a bad sport and gives you a
bad reputation.
RULE #6: Be wary about creating Ki Blobs around downed opponents
----------------------------------------------------------------
While there's nothing specific about using this tactic, I would caution
you that doing this might result in making a few people angry. I don't
think too many people would care all that much, but you should be
careful and stop doing this if people tell you to.
RULE #7: Obey the majority
--------------------------
This rule goes for ANY mod, ANY server, ANY game period, so I figured
it would be worth mentioning here. If you get on a server and start
doing something perfectly legal, and everybody tells you to stop, DO
IT OR GET ON ANOTHER SERVER! Case in point. You might join a server
that has decided to do a melee-free battle. While there's nothing wrong
with using melee attacks under normal conditions, these people may have
grown sick of it and decided to play without it for a while. Either
have fun and do what they say, or get off and join another server.
RULE #8: Never, EVER, kill AlwaysAFK
------------------------------------
If you see a guy online with a screen name "AlwaysAFK," do NOT kill
him! This is your way of saying "thank you" to the totally awesome guy
who wrote this FAQ. Come on; it's the least you could do! ^_^

:::SOFTWARE MODE
----------------
If you're running in software mode the game will crash. The swoop,
Spirit bomb, and the transformation effects will probably destroy you
in the first minute of the game. One suggestion that has been made is
to set "cl_fxquality" to 0, thus disabling all of the new particle
graphics save for the power up (which hasn't been known to crash the
game). This is not guaranteed to fix anything, but it might help. I
would suggest getting yourself a better video card...

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::conclusion
Wow. I finally finished. For some FAQ writers, writing a ~100 KB FAQ is
nothing, but this is a full 50+ KB higher than any other FAQ I've
written; and this is just the first version of the FAQ! I might add
more!
But it's been fun. I've enjoyed making this FAQ, and I certainly hope
that you've enjoyed reading it. Or at least that you've found out
whatever you needed. If what you wanted wasn't on here, I'm sorry. I
hope that later editions of this FAQ will have that info for you.
If you think I'm just a TOTALLY awesome FAQ writer, then let me show
you some of my other FAQs here on GameFAQs. Perhaps you'll become a TUI
fan like I am! -_^

I want to go ahead and give some thanks here. First, to my good friend

I also want to thank VALVe and Sierra for making Half-Life. If you've
never played single-player Half-Life, then you absolutely MUST do so.
Go to www.planethalflife.com for more info on this.
Thanks also to ESPACEMOD:

To FIGLET! Thanks for making all the butt-kicking ASCII art for me!
Check them out at

Oh yeah; can't forget the guys who made this MOD: y'all rock, and I'm
looking forward to the next version!
Finally, thanks to
http://www.gamefaqs.com. And especially to CJayC for
deciding to post this FAQ even though there's absolutely nothing else
about ESF on GameFAQs! But obviously somebody cares enough, 'cuz guess
what? YOU'RE READING THIS! HA! It was worth it. ^_^
At this point I'm just rambling. I'll finish by saying THANK YOU to my
Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. I can't say anything else about that for
fear of breaking the TOS, but if you're curious about what I just said,
or if you want to say anything else about this FAQ or about ESF, send
an e-mail my way:

Just remove the spaces and replace the appropriate words with the
appropriate symbols. I did it that way to fend off the evil Spam Bots.
