+ The Old Guy's Gaming Guide To: +
+ DISHONORED: DUNWALL CITY TRIALS +
+ COMPLETE WALKTHROUGH +
+ +
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
So you want to play Dunwall City Trials, huh? These 10 challenges are actually
quite fun, and will give you a chance to use quite a few skills and powers that
you didn't in the original storyline. If you are a casual gamer, and just want
to mess around with these, you probably won't need this guide at all. If you
are the type of person, however, that must get all of the trophies when you put
in a game, then you are like me and you will probably regret starting this DLC
by the time you finish it. There are a total of 10 trophies to be earned for
Dunwall City Trials. 7 of them are pretty easy to get once you get the hang of
each level. The remaining 3 are damn near impossible, and may cause you to
throw your controller at your TV. I will attempt to guide you through this
without making you want to scream, but you have been warned that it won't be
easy. I will also try to include as many workarounds, exploits, and glitches
as I can, so if you decide to use them they will be in the following guide.
Good luck, and happy gaming!
A NOTE ABOUT LANGUAGE- When I write guides, I generally do my best to keep
coarse language to a minimum, out of respect to my readers. I do acknowledge,
however, that swearing is sometimes the best way to express intense emotions,
and I'm feeling particularly intense about this DLC. You'll see what I mean
when you fail the same challenge 1,000 times yourself, I promise you. I
figure that since the material in Dishonored is meant for a more mature
audience anyway, you all can deal with a little foul language. So, I'm keeping
it in. You have been warned.
THE BASICS- The basic premise of this challenge is to figure out who your
target is and kill them without being detected. There will be four clues
scattered around the area in random locations. Each will narrow down the
search, at which point you will have a picture of your target. Sneak up on
them and kill them. Sounds easy, right? Well, it is.
I wrote quite a bit of information about this challenge, detailing all of the
spawn locations and possible targets. After seeing a trophy guide from curb,
however, I have found that there is a much easier way to do this. Thanks,
curb, for giving us a good starting point on how to nail this one quickly.
In Mystery Foe, you will have 4 goals: 3 stars on Normal and Expert Modes,
getting the Natural Talent trophy, and getting Emily's Doll. Let's get
Emily's Doll out of the way first. When you first start the level, just blink
up to the chandelier in the hall on your right, and follow the chandeliers all
the way to the far side of the area. In the middle room against the back wall,
you'll see a few party guests and a great big canopy bed. Blink to the bed,
then blink to the big rock by the wall on the other side of the room. Emily's
doll is on that rock.
Now for the rest. Restart the challenge, get into stealth mode immediately,
and head for the corner that marks the inside rooms of the area. It should be
right in front of you when you open the first door, and there should be a guard
with his back to you. Bear a little left at the corner, and look for the door
on your right. Open that door, tap R1 to get your knife out, and get ready.
The first thing you're looking for is a clue. If it's there, get it. The next
thing you're looking for is your target. If there are two people looking at
the fireplace, turn around and hide behind the door you just opened. In about
20 seconds, a guard in blue will walk by. Sneak up behind him and kill him.
If you get to your room, and there is only one guy looking at the fireplace, he
is probably your target. Sneak up and kill him. That's all there is to it!
Now, I wish I could say that you'll knock this out in 2 or 3 tries.
Unfortunately, this DLC has a habit of making things unnecessarily time
consuming by relying on luck. Let's do a little math: there are about 12
spawn locations for the clues, and 4 clues will spawn. This means that about
1 out of every 3 times you do this level, the clue will be in that first room.
There are about 25 people in the level, but I think there are only 16 possible
targets. Since your success relies on either the red guy or the guard being
the target, that means about 1 out of every 8 runs will give you the right
target. If you do some quick math, then, expect about 1 out of every 24 tries
to give you both the right clue and the right target. Fortunately, one run
takes about 40 seconds at most, so you should be done with Normal Mode in 20
minutes or so. I have found that it takes a little bit longer, but that might
just be bad math on my part.
Getting the Natural Talent trophy just requires that you complete the
challenge without using any powers. No problem: you'll probably get this
before you get the 3 stars. Congratulations on your first trophy!
Expert mode is slightly different, but your path will be exactly the same. The
only difference between the two modes is that the clues are placed on people,
and you'll have to pickpocket them. There are about 25 people in the level,
and you'll be interacting with 3, so you actually have about a 50% chance of
finding a clue. Also, it IS possible for your target to be carrying a clue.
When I got my 3 stars, the guard was my target, and he also had my clue. If
you get a clue and kill the right target in 45 seconds or so, your score will
be around 45,000 points. Good luck, and I'll see you in Burglar!
THE BASICS- The premise, again, is simple: get into the house, get the 6
eggs, get out undetected. If you're detected 3 times, you fail the challenge.
The 3 star run, however, is much more complicated. On the bright side, I don't
think there are any points to be awarded for time. Also, you'll have to get
Emily's doll at some point, beat another trophy challenge, then get 3 stars
again on Expert Mode. Let's begin.
NORMAL MODE- Before we get started, I'm going to tell you a little story. I
spent all night last night going through each section of this challenge,
meticulously writing every treasure down, then wrote up five full pages of text
showing how to get each item without getting caught. Then, I went to the
expert challenge. I came across a video on YouTube made by prenatual, and the
first 30 seconds of this video basically rendered everything I wrote worthless.
See, in the little corner of his video, he included the points calculation for
this challenge. Once you know how the points are figured out, this challenge
becomes immensely easier. It's still not a slam dunk, but with this knowledge
and a little patience, you'll be on to the next challenge in no time. A
reluctant thanks to prenatual for making this video: I wasted all of last
night, but this information is a huge help!
Here's how it works. First of all, when you pick up any treasure (even a 1
coin piece), you get points. Once you get them, you can't lose them, unless
you fail the challenge by being spotted or by dying. At the beginning, you
get double the coin value of whatever you pick up, plus 200 points. This
means that a 1 coin piece is worth 202 points, an ingot is worth 400 points,
etc. Once you get all 6 eggs, however, this bonus number grows to 360! This
bonus number is the only number that changes: it goes up when you get all the
eggs, and it goes down based on how many times you were spotted, busted, etc.
I think it drops like 5 points for each lightning bolt you cause, and maybe 30
or so for each guard you kill. This changes absolutely everything about how
you play this challenge: first, getting the 6 eggs becomes your number one
priority, and you want to get as little loot as possible until you have the
eggs. Second, those worthless little coins become the most valuable items in
the level when they're in groups of, say, 5. To illustrate, once you get the
eggs, a Sokolov painting is worth 300*2 + 360, or 960 points. 5 coins,
however, are worth (1*2 + 360)*5, or 1810 points! With that said, let's get
into the details.
First, you need to get inside the back door of the building. Go right down the
steps and jump the gap, then turn right just before you enter the gate. You
can walk/blink/jump along the rim without being detected, all the way to the
door. Once you're inside, ignore all the treasure. This is a safe room, and
you'll see three doors leading to the main area. Go right up to the middle
door and use your dark vision or the keyhole to watch the two guards. One
makes a counterclockwise circle of the area, and one goes back and forth. Wait
until the circling guy goes past you to your right, then wait for the linear
guy to pass you to the right as well. You can open the door, cross the area
and get the egg. Then, turn around immediately and go back to the other egg.
Now go back through the door you came in through, and close it behind you.
Backtrack to the first door (the one closest to the entrance to the house).
Use your dark vision or the keyhole and wait for circular guard to pass you
again, then get behind him and pick his pocket (hey, why not?). He will
immediately go through a second door, which you want to go up to as soon as it
closes. Use your dark vision or the keyhole again, and look to your right.
Linear guard will walk up right next to the door and stare at some art for a
while, then start his beat again. When he's past you, open the door and go
halfway up the stairs, to the part where it turns around. Congratulations,
you've completed level 1 (for now)!
There are 3 guards on level 2, but one of them just stands on the patio with
his back to you, so we won't talk about him any more. One guard is patrolling
the area right at the top of the stairs, which sucks. The other one makes a
counterclockwise route all through this floor, which also sucks, but not as
much. Since your only goal right now is to get the 2 eggs, this won't be too
difficult. Use your dark vision to watch the circling guard and make sure he's
in the big room to your right. Now watch the stairs guard. He will come right
up to the top of the stairs, turn around and stand for a minute, then walk away
to your right. As soon as he does this, go straight up the stairs, open the
display case and grab the egg, and quickly go to the room on your left. You'll
go through a door and be looking right at a juicy little safe. Leave it alone
for a second and go through the door on your right, unless your dark vision
tells you that the circular dude is coming. If he is, just walk into the
corner between the fireplace and the safe and chill for a minute until he moves
on. If you have time, go through this door on your right, close it behind you,
and hide under the table at the end of the room. Wait for the guard to pass
you, then open the door right there to get your egg in the main room. Go back
through the door, and get back to the stairs. Follow circular guard, use dark
vision to wait for stair guard to turn his back, and go right on up to level
3. Ignore level 3 for right now, and go halfway up the stairs to level 4.
Your next challenge awaits.
Level 4 has 3 guards. The first one (Guard A) just stands right by the top of
the stairs and either looks at the stairs or looks at the painting on the wall.
The second one (Guard B) makes a counterclockwise circuit of the stairway area,
the main room, and the little side room that you're trying to get to. The
third one (Guard C) paces back and forth between the patio and the main room.
From the little turnaround on the stairs, blink up to the railing, then
immediately up to the fireplace. You can see much better from here, and you
won't be detected. Now, wait for Guard B to make his circle and go into the
main room. Wait for guard A to look at the wall, then blink by him to the
area on your left. This will be another room that curves around to the right,
but you have very little time, as this guy makes much quicker passes than the
dude on level 2. So, right when you turn right, you'll see some pipes to the
left of the next door. Jump up to those and wait for your guard to pass you.
Or, this would be a great time to sleep dart him. I have actually killed this
guy and the pacing guard and still gotten out of here with 37,000 or so. So,
if you want to save some wear on your brain, just get behind him and hit him
with the sleep dart. Then, go out to the main room and get that guy as well.
Even killing them still got me about a 265 bonus at the end, which is plenty
to get your 3 star rating. Whatever you do, from the bathroom just go into the
main room and through the door to your immediate left. There's a little room
there in the corner with the fifth egg in it. Egg number 6 is across the main
room by the purple bed to your right. Once you have all 6 eggs, you can start
looting the crap out of this place!
The first time you do this, I suggest you incapacitate the two guards that are
roaming this level. It makes things much quicker, and you'll learn where
everything is. Now, just go nuts and find everything you can. When you're
done, sneak by the final guard and back down to level 3.
Level 3 isn't really even a level, so much as a bonus area. There are no
guards, and only 2 rooms. Start by getting the Sokolov Painting off the wall,
then clean up any coins laying around here. Now, find the fake lamp and touch
it. It will take you to the Blue Man Group altar. Get the coin, turn around,
get the ingot, turn around, get the other coin, and Emily's Doll if this is
your first time, then exit and go down to level 2! You should be over 20,000
points by this time, but if you're a little short that's OK too.
Start on this level by sneaking past mister stair guard and getting into that
little room in the back corner. There's all kinds of stuff in here, including
some good stuff if you move the fake book in the bookshelf. Then, dodge the
guards on your way back to the main room and get all the goodies scattered
around. You can even pickpocket the guy on the patio! You may just hit
30,000 while on this level, so that's great. If not, pop on down to level 1
again and clean it out until you're over 30,000.
Once you hit 30,000 points, your only goal should be getting the hell out of
here. If you have been spotted twice already, you'll have to go back the way
you came. If you feel like an adventure, walk on out the front door and take
on the two dudes patrolling outside. Either way, you won't lose any of your
points, so just don't get spotted 3 times or die. That was fun, wasn't it?
That was pretty much all there was to do for the Normal mode of the Burglary
challenge, but before we go for our 3 stars rating in Expert, I suggest you
take a little break and go for the Rare Collector trophy. You need to collect
16 collectable figurines that are now scattered all over here, but more
importantly you need to adjust to the changes that Expert mode brings. This
shit sucks, I'll just warn you! First, your abilities are all... gone! All
you get are some crossbow bolts and some sleep darts, so I hope you like hiding
behind doors and peeking through keyholes. Second, some of the cases and doors
are now locked, and you'll have to find the keys. Third, the safe on the
second floor is now protected with a combination. It changes randomly every
time you play, and I never did figure out how to unlock it reliably. I mostly
just started at 000 and worked my way up, while dodging the guards. I think
the numbers are written on the walls of the 3rd floor, but by the time I got
there, I didn't need it anyway. Fourth, some of the more valuable items have
been moved around to more difficult locations, and some of the coins are up on
top of bookshelves and such. This is why getting the figurines on this run is
a good idea: just go through immediately and sleep dart all 8 guards. Then,
pick through each level, learn where the keys and items are, and get all 16
figurines for your trophy. A brief list of where to find them is below.
I'm assuming you knocked out all the guards on your way up, so I'm going to
start this list at level 4: There are 6 up here: on the ground by the purple
bed, on top of the bookcase by the fireplace, on the mantle of the same
fireplace, on one of the sinks in the bathroom, on the fireplace mantle by the
stairs (way up), and on the bookcase next to the stair railing. There's only
one on level 3: floating in the sky between two windows. Level 2 has 4: on
the nightstand next to the green bed, to the left of the safe, on a shelf in
the little side room, and behind the divider in the main room. Level 1, has,
you guessed it, 5 figurines: on one of the bunk beds in the bunk room, in the
locker in the same room, on a bottom shelf in the kitchen, in the locker by the
building entrance behind the processed whale oil, and by the wine barrels right
by the building entrance. Once you get them all, you'll pretty much have to
get home using the front door. There are two guards to mess you up, but if you
sneak up on them you can kill them or choke them. Them seeing you shouldn't be
a problem either, since you haven't been detected yet. That's it, now let's
try to 3 star this bad boy!
Getting 3 stars on Expert Mode is very similar to Normal Mode, except you can't
use any powers. The strategy is exactly the same, but use keyholes instead of
dark vision, and find good hiding places instead of blinking everywhere.
You'll have to spend quite a bit of time watching the guards, but if you have
made it this far, getting the 3 stars shouldn't be all that difficult. Next,
it's time for the Back Alley Brawl!
Before we begin any discussion of mechanics, I want to make two points: first,
I am not very good at combat in this game. I'm pretty awkward with the
controls, I forget to use half the weapons and techniques that I have, I can't
drop assassinate to save my life, and I usually run right by the guy I ran up
to kill. If you are better at combat, this challenge will go better for you.
If you're not, I'll be providing some tips to help compensate. I have only
reached level 13 three times after 13 straight days of playing this challenge
(about 40 hours), and I only beat Daud once, by luck. Fortunately, you don't
have to kill Daud to get everything you need for the trophies.
The second point I want to make is that this guide is primarily focused on
achieving the trophies in the game. If you want to actually get good at this
challenge, there are a few videos out there of some truly crazy runs where the
scores are well into the hundred thousands. I am not this good, so we'll be
focusing on four goals: 1) Get Emily's doll, 2) Get 30,000 points on Normal
Mode, 3) Get 30,000 points on Expert Mode, and 4) Get the By My Hand Alone
trophy by killing all enemies personally. It won't be pretty, but it will get
you through.
First, let's get the doll out of the way. You can kind of see it from where
you start, if you look up and a little to your left. To get to it, go left
from the starting point around the metal roof until you see two floating panels
on your left. Blink to the first one of these, then blink up to the chain
right above you. Walk left along it to the rooftop. There's another chain at
the corner of this rooftop. Walk across it to the end and look up a little
bit. You should see the doll just one blink away. I wish the rest of the
challenge was this easy.
Now, it's time to start racking up points. You get points when you kill
somebody, but the actual calculations are too complex for me to figure out. I
have ended round 1 with 1100 points, and I have ended round 1 with 3600 points,
for essentially doing the same thing. The bonuses flash so fast that I don't
have time to look. The actual enemies that spawn are semi-random, and so are
their locations. In addition, they usually end up attacking each other,
sometimes killing each other within seconds of beginning the level. When you
get to level 10, you will have to kill tallboys (yikes!). If you want to play
this challenge correctly, I have a more detailed walkthrough in the "Getting
the By My Hand Alone trophy" section. I suggest, however, that you use an
exploit first to get your 3 star rating in both the normal and expert modes.
By this time you'll be familiar with the challenge, so the guide will make more
sense when you get there. For now, we just need to know some basic things and
the trick to an easy 30,000.
GETTING 3 STARS- This will be the same strategy for both modes. First, we
need a home base. From the starting point, go to the metal roof to your left
and run to the end. Blink across the alley to the roof with "You Shall Die"
on it, and a little air conditioning unit. This is your home base, and I will
be referring to it many times in the next few pages. From here, you can watch
almost everyone without them seeing you, blink to almost anywhere to kill
people unaware, and even hide from the tallboys. Now that you know where this
is, let's talk about ways to clear a level.
There are two ways to clear any level in this challenge: the aggressive way
and the stealthy way. The aggressive way is to just run around like crazy,
use your guns and crossbow, and just slaughter everyone. The stealthy way is
to go up to your home base, blink down to an enemy, kill them, then blink back
to home base. The aggressive way will earn you many more points, but will also
cost you ammo, health and mana. Each round has its preferred method.
In between some rounds, runes and merchants pop up. Get the rune, and you'll
get a new power. Kill the merchant, and you'll get new skills. I'll detail
these in the next section, but for now get used to when and where they show up.
You probably won't need any runes for the 3 star ratings, but at least try to
get the first two so you get used to picking up Bend Time. The merchant is a
must. Stagger him with a crossbow dart, then wail away until he dies. That's
all I'm going to cover for now: we'll come back to this a little later.
I suggest you try the challenge on your own a few times, just to see what
you're up against. The exploit that I used to get my 30,000 points on each
level was after playing for 20 hours or so, with a top score of 29,640. I was
so frustrated that I just gave up and did it the easy way, so if you can get 3
stars on your own, go for it. If you want to do it my way, here's how:
The exploit lies in this fact: you get a whopping 80 points for "vanishing."
Every time you alert an enemy, then hide from him, you have vanished. Boom,
80 points. Once you find a dumb enemy and a good hiding place, you can run
this cycle in about 10 seconds, which is good for 480 points a minute, or about
24,000 points an hour. So theoretically, you could kill the first two guys on
the first level, then spend the next hour or so running away from the one guy
that's left to get 30,000 points. We can cut this down quite a bit by actually
playing the first 8 levels. This will also get you some valuable practice when
it comes time for the By My Hand Alone trophy.
Start by killing everyone in the first two waves as quickly and aggressively as
you can with just your sword. A stray bullet isn't bad in a bind, but try to
conserve ammo. If you do this well, you should be around 5,000 or more points
after level 2. Get your rune, then stay aggressive in round 3. The enemies
are a little harder, so use some ammo if you want. Now, go dart the merchant
and slaughter him, then take another aggressive line in rounds 4 and 5. Throw
grenades, throw whale oil, whatever you want is fine, just try to kill as many
people as quickly as possible. Now, your second rune will show up, so go get
that. Also, the levels will get harder and harder from here on out. So, if
you are already over 12,000 after round 5, maybe it's time to head to home
base and start blink-killing everyone. Just wait for them to kill each other,
then kill whoever is left. If you need more points, take the aggressive line
and try not to die. When round 8 starts, it's time to back off. There will
always be a musical overseer and 3 guards in this round, and you don't want to
be caught by the overseer. Make sure you're sitting on the roof at home base
when round 8 starts, then find the overseer, blink behind him, and kill him.
Kill the other 3 guys, and get to home base for level 9.
Level 9 is where the magic happens. There will be 5 enemies, and one of them
will be the torturer. You'll figure out who he is quickly enough. When level
9 starts, don't do anything until they kill each other. Your goal is to kill
everyone in the level EXCEPT the torturer. He's usually the last one standing
anyway, and this is perfect. Now, blink back to home base and get ready for
the boringness. Get out of stealth mode and walk to the edge of the roof.
Stand there, jump up and down, whack the roof, do whatever you can to get his
attention. As soon as he sees you (his lightning bolts turn red), go into
stealth mode and back away from the edge, about halfway or further up the roof.
Now sit. Eventually, the torturer will forget you're there, and you'll get
your 80 points. Go back to the edge and get his attention again, then back up
again. Do this a bunch of times at 80 points a crack, and you'll have your
30,000 in less than an hour. Why do we use this guy, you ask? Well, for a
number of reasons:
1) He appears in round 9, which is late enough to get you a bunch of points
the easy way. It's also early enough so you won't have to deal with any
tallboys (the first one is in level 10).
2) He likes to hang out right around your home base.
3) He's not mobile: he can't jump and he can't throw anything at you.
4) He sounds like he's taking a dump, which makes me laugh the whole time I'm
messing with him.
That's all there is to it! If you find that hiding from the torturer takes too
long, try one of the other guys in level 8 or 9. If you find a good place to
blink, you can cut your cycle time considerably. Once you get your 30,000, do
the same thing in Expert Mode. The only thing that changes is that the enemies
know where you are as soon as they spawn. You can still vanish from them once
the level starts, though, so it's pretty similar to Normal Mode. You should
now have 3 stars in both modes, and Emily's doll, so you're probably feeling
like this is going to be an easy challenge. Boy, are you wrong. The real
walkthrough is next.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Achieving this trophy is a lot like pitching a perfect game: it's very rare,
really hard to do, and all the skill in the world won't help you if you don't
have a little luck. Conversely, all the luck in the world won't help you if
you don't have the skill to take advantage of your chances. Basically, you
have to make 53 kills in 12 rounds, which is every single enemy. Aside from
the tallboys, killing the guys is a relatively simple process. The big problem
is that they also kill each other, sometimes less than 5 seconds into the
level.
I will warn you right now: this trophy is a bitch. It was my last one of the
81 trophies for the Dishonored set, and it is certainly the one I'm the most
proud of. As a completionist, I have a few trophies in my collection that are
shared by less than 1% of gamers, and I'm not exaggerating much when I say that
this is the hardest thing I've ever done. The awkward gameplay, coupled with
the tragic randomness makes this thing an absolute nightmare, especially for a
5 dollar DLC. Did I scare you enough? Good, let's begin.
I suggest you spend your first few hours just playing. You'll pick up many
nuances with practice, such as spawn points, typical enemies, and the best way
to kill each type. You may not get all the kills, but you will get great
practice. Also, you want to be very familiar with the two spawn locations of
the tallboys when round 10 comes around. If you have already played a bunch
trying to get your 3 star rating, skip this step.
Finally, take a moment and focus on what's important: you are trying to kill
53 enemies, and that is all. Your score doesn't matter, your style points
don't matter, and neither do your ammo, health, and mana, unless you know
you'll need them for later rounds. If you finish with absolutely nothing in
your arsenal, barely alive, and with not enough mana to even blink, you will
still get this damn trophy.
Now it's time to take a shot at this beast. I'll be dividing the guide into
two parts: levels 1-9, and levels 10-12, or pre-tallboy and post-tallboy.
--------------------------
PART ONE: LEVELS 1-9- There are three things to think about when beginning
any level in this challenge: what to equip when it begins, where to stand, and
where to run once the level starts. I'll include this information for all 9
rounds.
Level 1 starts on the steps at the front of the level, and you'll have your
revolver equipped. As soon as you can, run down the steps toward the back of
the level and start killing. The game will spawn 3 enemies, in some
combination of weepers and lower watch guards. If any two of them get in a
fight, kill the guard first. Don't use your revolver at all. When you kill
the 3rd enemy, equip your crossbow and start running back towards where you
started. In the corner below the steps, there's an overturned dumpster, which
is my favorite place to start the next level. From here, you can see 7 spawn
points, and knowing where your enemies are coming from is a huge advantage.
Level 2 will give you 3 enemies as well, so as soon as they spawn pick a route
that gets you to 1 or 2 of them quickly. Use the crossbow if you need it, but
only to a maximum of 2 bolts. As soon as you kill your final enemy, look for
the rune that pops up. If it's on the ground, go get it. If it's in the air,
ignore it and get back to the fallen dumpster.
Level 3 only has 3 guys as well, but they are harder to kill. Again, use your
crossbow if you need it. At this point it's a good idea to start thinking
about leaving the last guy alive for a minute: if you didn't get the rune yet,
you'll need to do this anyway. Once you get to level 5 or so, getting this
trophy absolutely demands that you take your time and set up for the next round
before killing the last guy, so you might as well start doing it now. Hack
away until the first two enemies are dead, then run away from the third. Blink
up to home base and hide until you disappear. Now, get the rune if you need
it, sneak around and loot the area for ammo, and plan your next round. When
you're ready, hop down and kill the last guy, or shoot him with your crossbow.
When you kill the last guy, a merchant will spawn. Hit him until he's dead,
but do it quickly: you need to be back at the dumpster when round 4 starts.
One quick note about the merchant: there are many ways to kill him, but only
one way to kill him quickly: if you hit him with a crossbow in the legs, he
will fall down. Then, you can run right up and slaughter him with your knife
until he dies. The better you get at killing these guys, the greater your
chances of getting this trophy.
Level 4 will now give you 4 enemies: the next two rounds are all about the
revolver, so equip it. Now, start running wherever the enemies spawned, and
kill 3 of them as quickly as possible. Then, run away, loot the area, and kill
the final guy when you're ready. Run over to the dumpster again and get ready
for round 5.
Level 5 will be basically the same as level 4, so use the same strategy. This
is actually the hardest round of the 12 in my opinion, because they can kill
each other easily before you can kill them. You will also begin to notice a
pecking order as you fail a bunch: once you know who the stronger enemy is,
make sure to kill them first if they're fighting each other. Again, leave 1
enemy, loot the area, and kill him. At the end of round 5, a rune will spawn,
and it is the single most important thing in the game: Bend Time. Thank God!
Get it if you can, even if it's on a ledge, then get back to the dumpster for
level 6.
Level 6 is where this thing starts to get fun, if you want to call Back Alley
Brawl fun. You'll still have 4 enemies, but you now have Bend Time. Equip it
when the level starts, and watch where the enemies spawn. You'll actually
have a second or two while they run at each other, so you can plan on how to
kill any 3 of them before they attack each other. As soon as you know, hit
that bend time and run at them. You should be able to get 3 of them before
time starts: if not, save your mana and just melee it until you have 1 enemy
left. Try to save your ammo, but you're about to get a bunch in the next 3
rounds, so don't fret too much if you blow a round or two. Run away, loot the
place, then kill the last guy. Before you run for your dumpster, you will
have to kill a merchant, so get him as quickly as you can.
Level 7: 4 guys again, start at the dumpster again, bend time again as soon as
you have a plan. Kill 3, run away, loot the place, kill the last guy. This
time, though, get up to your home base on the rooftop before level 8 begins.
Level 8 is a bit different than the first 7, and thankfully it's an easy
difference: the enemies in this level will NEVER attack each other. On rare
occasions, the rats may get one of them, but you are almost always free to take
your time. It's a good thing, too: you will encounter your first musical
overseer. This is why you want to be on the roof when the level starts, and in
stealth mode: if he gets his music going, you're basically screwed. Look
around for him first, then blink down when you can and assassinate him. Get
back up to home base and do the same thing with the other 3 guys, but remember
to loot the place before you kill the last one. No bend time is necessary in
this round, so save your mana. Get back up on the roof for the beginning of
round 9.
Level 9 will now feature 5 enemies, one of which is the torturer. You may want
to wait a few seconds, as there are almost always assassins who will blink to
the ground if you give them time. Regardless, find 4 of the 5 enemies, then
stop time. Ideally, you want to blink down and stealth kill the torturer, as
you can spend all of your slow time whacking away without much success. If you
can't get him first, just kill a few other guys first, then use your adrenaline
to chop off his head. Either way, don't stop running and swiping until you've
killed 4 enemies, then run away and hide. This is VERY important in this
round, as you have a lot to do before round 10 begins. If you're patient, you
will find that the last enemy will stop walking around after a minute or so,
and this is exactly what you want.
It's time to get ready for the tallboys. I have to give credit to
lifeexpectancy on xboxachievements.com for this ingenious strategy that makes
drop assassinations and grenades a thing of the past. Thank you
lifeexpectancy, you have almost made this challenge bearable. Here's the
trick: if you put 5 tanks of whale oil right where the tallboys spawn, stop
time as soon as they show up, and shoot one of the tanks, the tallboy will die
before he ever sees you! Awesome! In order to do this, though, you'll have to
spend about 20 minutes playing the last 3 rounds: after 2 weeks of failing,
though, I was willing to try anything! This works like a charm, so here's what
you want to do.
With 1 enemy left in level 9, grab the whale oil tank. Place it a little bit
away from the corner with the dumpster, where you have started most of the
levels. It may take a few tries to get it close enough to the tallboy spawn,
but you'll know after 3 or 4 attempts exactly where to put it. Now, wait for
another tank to come down the chute, and put it next to the first one. Do this
3 more times until there are 5 tanks right in a cluster over by the dumpster.
Now, repeat this process in the other corner, where the second tallboy spawns.
I actually like to make my cluster a little further from the corner here, as
I'm turning around when the level begins, so this gives him time to walk into
my tanks. Once you have all 10 tanks set up, loot the area, kill the last
guy, and get ready for the merchant.
The merchant after level 9 can be an overly stressful experience, especially
if you're perfect so far. You have to kill him before he reaches either corner
that has your tanks, and you have to kill him and get up to your home base
before level 10 begins. If you have 3 or more mana vials, you may cheat and
use bend time for him: I won't judge you. With luck, you'll get your mana
back while you kill him. The important part is to finish him off and get your
ass up to home base for round 10.
-------------------------
PART TWO- LEVELS 10-12: Surprisingly, if you can conquer your nerves, these
three levels aren't that bad. You should have plenty of mana, plenty of ammo,
and you have two homemade whale oil explosives ready for the tallboys, right?
By the way, if you are really good at drop assassinations, you can probably
skip the whale oil setup. I'm not, so I'd rather take the extra time. Anyway,
let's get this done.
Level 10: 1 tallboy, 4 other guys, who CAN attack each other. Be on the
rooftop at home base, looking over the roof at your first whale oil stash by
the stairs, when level 10 begins. As soon as the enemies spawn, slow time and
switch to your crossbow or revolver. If you got lucky, you'll see a tallboy
standing right on your tanks by the stairs. If you do, shoot the tanks. If
not, turn around, run to the other side of the roof, and shoot the other
tanks. This should end the tallboy. If you miss, you can try to drop kill
him, grenade him, or shoot him, but you're probably screwed. If you hit, haul
ass down to the other enemies and try to kill 3 before time starts again.
With your revolver equipped, you should be able to get them even if time starts
again. Then, leave the last guy, hide until you disappear, and replace the
tanks you just blew up. Loot the area if there's anything to get, and finish
kill number 42. Again, get back up to the roof at home base and face the first
pile of tanks by the stairs.
Level 11 is exactly the same as level 10. Once you have it down to the last
guy, however, there is one additional thing you need to do: set some
springrazors. By now, you know where the spawn points are, so pick your two
favorite and stick a springrazor on the ground at its feet. If you're lucky,
you'll kill some dudes with them before you have to fight them. If you're
really lucky, you'll kill the damn musical overseer before he starts time for
you right while you're trying to kill a tallboy. Either way, get ready for
the final round!
Level 12, theoretically, is the hardest level in the game. However, you have
some huge advantages that make this easier than some of the other ones.
First, you know which location will spawn the tallboy... both of them!
Second, you have two giant piles of whale oil tanks just waiting to take them
out, leaving you with only 3 other enemies. Third, you can use anything in
your arsenal, down to your last bullet, grenade, or crossbow dart. Start the
same way you did in levels 10 and 11, looking at your first pile of tanks.
Stop time right away, shoot the tanks, run to the other side, and shoot the
other tanks. If you have the mana, keep time slowed the entire time you're
playing this. Once the tallboys are gone, just find the other three and kill
them from the roof you're on. Take a deep breath, then kill the merchant that
spawns for your 53rd kill. Congratulations, you are now in possession of the
By My Hand Alone Trophy! If you have done this, only Bonfires will give you
trouble, and we'll get to that later. For now, sip some champagne out of that
trophy: you've earned it!
Well, this game certainly doesn't get much easier, does it? Once again, you'll
be immersed in a frustratingly random challenge that seems like it should be
easy but isn't. It will probably take an hour to get to where you can
consistently finish the challenge, but getting your 3 star rating will take
considerably longer. The idea is that you have only a crossbow, and you'll
have to run through 7 areas, kill all 20 enemies, and save the 5 civilians.
Headshots, surprise attacks, and kill chains are what give you your score
throughout the mission. There are also bonus points in there, and I think they
are for "creative kills." Unfortunately, I don't know what constitutes a
creative kill, since you only have a crossbow. At the end, you'll get a bonus
based on time, health remaining, civilians saved, and accuracy, plus a mystery
factor that I also can't figure out. The bonus can be around 4,000 to 12,000
points, but I don't know what makes up the difference! I'll give you the best
walkthrough I can based on what I do know, but don't be frustrated if you keep
doing what I do and end up with 15,000 for a while. I couldn't figure it out
either, but as I got more comfortable with my run, my scores DID go up
steadily.
Let's start with the first area. There are 4 people in here, and 4 spawn
points. One of them will be a civilian, and her location is random. You'll
learn their locations quickly enough. Start by quickly popping a head shot
into the guy walking away from you, then swivel left and pop the guy looking at
the art. Stay on the move: your kill chain is the most important score maker
in the first 3 rooms, and if you go 5 seconds or so without killing someone,
you will lose the chain. We'll talk about scoring in a little bit, after
you've seen the first 3 rooms. Once the second guy is down, walk forward,
switch to stealth mode, and face right at the first alley. If you were quick
enough, you should see an assassin walking towards your right. If you were
too slow, he will have already crossed and is now looking at more art. You
want to be fast enough to pick him off as he crosses the hall, so keep
practicing until you can do this effectively. The 4th guy will be almost in
your face, rummaging through the desk. You can't hit him in the head while
he's searching, so double tap him and quickly kill him. Notice I gave a
strategy for 4 guys, even though there are only 3. Wherever the civilian is,
obviously, is the one you don't get. To sum up: Guy right in front of you,
guy to the left, guy crossing the hall to your right, guy rummaging through
the desk. As soon as you kill all 3 guys, head for the next room quickly.
The first room should take you only 12 or 13 seconds.
There is an alternate, and I think ingenious strategy that I saw on a video by
DaTscheka. It involves sneaking up on each assassin, choking him out, and
lining him up by the door to room 2. Then, pop all 3 in the head and you'll be
standing right by the next room, ready to get your kill chain all the way up to
x6! This takes about a minute, but if you are having difficulty in the first
room, check out his video to see how he does it. I prefer the 12 second
approach, but I've played enough to be able to keep my kill chain going without
the unconscious guy at the door. A hybrid version involves choking out one of
the guards and setting him by the door. Then, get ready, kill the other two,
pop the unconscious guy and start room 2. This keeps the chain alive without
having to choke out all 3 assassins. Whatever you do, get good at it and do it
every time.
Room 2 also has 4 spawn points, with a civilian taking up one of these
randomly. They are just to the left of the door, towards the back facing away
from you, right next to point 2 but facing left, and all the way in the back
pacing around. Start shooting as soon as your auto-aim kicks in, and aim for
the middle guy that's facing left. You'll have to move quickly to get the
other ones, because you will alert them, but getting 3 more head shots is
actually pretty easy after a few tries. If you can do all 6 of these kills
and keep your kill chain alive, you can have somewhere around 6500 points by
the time you go into the third room. I've even seen higher scores, but I still
don't know what makes them that high, and the game moves too fast to update the
scores with each bonus.
Now it's time for room 3, which is the weeper room. 5 weepers and 1 civilian
will come running at you as soon as you clear the first bookcase. What you
want to do is wait a split second, then jump up or blink up to that very
bookcase. If you wait too long, the weepers will run right to the bottom of
the bookcase you are on and make shooting them very difficult. If you go too
early, they'll stop right around the far doorway, also making it hard to kill
them. I have also heard that you want to stay OUT of stealth mode while you
do this, as stealth mode is what keeps them running at you instead of stopping.
Once you get on the bookcase, and this is really the key to your 3 star run, is
pop them all, in rapid succession, with headshots. This will be damn hard,
because zooming will negate the auto-aim, and they like to stand there, heads
bobbing up and down, while they puke all over the floor. What I suggest is
that you use dark vision, take a deep breath, and pick one that's vomiting. As
soon as he stops, begin your killing spree with a head shot. Go to the next
one whose head is still and pop them, then just do that for all 5 people. If
you miss their head, they'll fly back and not die, but your round isn't
immediately over. Just make sure you hit them one more time while they're
lying down to keep your chain alive. Also, your points are drastically higher
for headshots, so make sure that your last 2 kills are with headshots at least.
If you do this quickly and accurately, your score should be between 12,000 and
19,000. One more note: on one of your first runs that you mangle this, make
sure you jump over to the top of the bookcase in the far corner and get Emily's
doll before going to the next room. Once you get decent at killing the weepers,
get in the habit of running immediately into the next room. If you can kill
the first guy within 5 seconds of the last weeper, your chain will go all the
way up to x7, giving you an extra 4,000 points!
Let's take a break for a second and talk about scoring, and why I hate it. I

know this much: you get 100 points for a kill, 200 points for a headshot, and
150 points for a surprise kill (no lightning bolts). You can get all of these
for the same enemy, making a total of 450 per enemy. If you get your kill
chain up to 6, then, the first two rooms are potentially worth 450*21, or
9450. I have never seen this score, but let's leave it there for a moment.
In the third room with the weepers, you have to alert them for them to come
out of the starting room, making a max of 300 points per enemy. With a kill
chain of 5, this makes your max score in this room of 300*15, or 4500. So,
you're looking at a maximum of 13,950 at the end of the third area, right? So
how the hell can you have 19 or 20,000 by the time you leave this room? I
really don't know. There are some kinds of bonuses for the way you kill
people, and it would be really great to know what they are. Especially since
the numbers are so significant: I mean, we're talking at least 20% of your
score here! It might have to do with accuracy, flair (whatever that is), or
something so obscure that there's no way to control it anyway. It might be
the average time between shots, or the number of actual shots fired, or the
phase of the moon in Portugal: I just don't know. By the time I got my 3
stars, and my Headhunter Trophy, though, I was so sick of this challenge that
I didn't want to play 500 more times to find out. If that changes, I'll
update the guide, but don't hold your breath. Suffice it to say, that as you
get smoother and more confident with this challenge, your bonuses will go up.
If you're consistently getting over 12,000 by the first 3 rooms, you're right
on the doorstep.
Let's move on: this is where it gets a little interesting. There are 4 more
areas, and each one requires a different skill set. The first is a straight
brawl: 3 doors will open, and one of them will have a civilian behind it. Be
quick and get a headshot on the first assassin, as there's no way to avoid
detection. The other will blink toward you, so back up a little and pop him as
quickly as you can. When they're dead, face left, look up, and blink to the
open window to start the next area.
This one is basically a sniper challenge, and will be the easiest section with
a little practice. Switch back to crossbows, run to the window, zoom with R3,
then zoom more with the square button. See the guy holding the civilian
hostage? Hit him in his nice round head, then pan down and right to the
floating steps. There's a guy that walks up the steps then blinks back down to
the bottom. Kill him fast enough to keep your chain alive if you can, then
immediately sprint through the now open door to your right. Go into stealth
mode at the doorway, then slink right and look for the guy walking away from
you. Pop him in the head quickly, then start walking down the hall. The
second guy is looking at some crap on the ground, so double tap him if your
chain is still going. If you want to wait for him to stand up, that's fine as
well, since you can get 450 for a surprise headshot instead of 400 for a
straight kill with a chain bonus. You probably will lose your chain after
this guy anyway. At this point, I just double tap him, because we're nearing
the end and my score is either good enough or not at this point.
Welcome to the last area. You will fight 3 assassins, I think there are only
4 spawning points, but it's tough to tell because they will see you immediately
and start moving around. It's a little hectic in here, and is probably the
hardest room from a getting your ass killed standpoint. Just keep your vision
straight ahead and listen for the spawn. If a dude pops up by your crosshairs,
you got lucky. Take off his head before he moves. If you don't see one, spin
left a little and he should be there. Fire at him until he's dead. By this
time, the two that spawned on the far balcony should be well on their way to
murdering you, so back up a little, find them, and rapid fire them until you
have no skulls remaining. Then, tear ass into the open doorway and finish the
challenge!
If you are fast in this room, you can headshot the first guy, pan up to the
rail, get the second guy, then pan right and get the third guy before he gets
down the steps. This rarely happens, though, as you'll have to kill all 3 guys
in about 5 seconds. Just keep practicing and getting killed here, and
eventually you will get the hang of it. Your bonus will be anywhere from 4,000
to 12,000, depending on the factors listed in the opening paragraph. However,
from my experience I have found that saving the civilians is worth about 2500
points, and the other 3 factors (time, health, accuracy), only vary by about
1500. So, where does the other freaking 8,000 points come from? I have no
clue. All I know is that the smoother my run, the more often I got the higher
bonus. If you are getting your whole run done in less than 2 minutes, you are
in the realm of the higher bonus. That's all I know. My guess is it that it's
like the other challenges: the more lightning bolts you cause, the lower your
multiplier. Which sucks, because at least 10 of the 20 enemies are required to
be aware of you by the game mechanics. Suck it, Dishonored!
THE GLITCH: There is a glitch that allows you to skip the last room. Just
blink up to the cabinet with the lamps on it, just to the left of the exit
door. Then, walk into the wall until it turns white and blink into the void to
end the challenge. I don't know if this affects your score, as I didn't use it
to get 30,000. By the time you get to the last room, you should be skilled
enough to take these 3 guys out without dying, and you should have enough
points that it won't matter anyway. HOWEVER, when it comes to getting your
Headhunter trophy, this glitch is immensely valuable, as you'll only have to
headshot 17 assassins. More on this later.
I am aware of no other exploits, cheats or harvesting opportunities in this
challenge. Yes, that means you actually have to get good at it. Once
assassins are aware of you, you can't disappear, unless you count dying as
disappearing. You can't hammer away at dead bodies or inanimate objects for
extra points, or execute spin moves or slides until you get your 30,000. If
I am wrong on this, please post a comment to that effect: I would love an
easy, reliable way to do this. As of now, though, there is very little
information out there about this challenge.
Well, if you got your 3 star rating, you only have 1 task remaining: the
Headhunter trophy! In order to get this, you have to kill all enemies with
headshots and 100% accuracy. One note here: you must hit ALL enemies with
only headshots. No staggering in the belly and then killing by a headshot.
You have 20 enemies, and you have to use 20 darts, unless you use the glitch
and only need 17. It sucks, but not as bad as you might think. First off,
you should be able to get the first 11 by now with no help, especially since
you can take all the time you want. That takes care of the first 3 rooms.
Here's where it gets interesting: the room with the doors gives you no
opportunity to avoid a direct attack. Fortunately, coopifaction has posted an
excellent video for the next 4 rooms, and I really have nothing to add.
Everything you need is there, it's what I used to get this trophy, and I
basically did everything the way he showed in the video. It still took about
an hour, but I was very happy to get this trophy out of the way. A big thanks
to coopifaction, who took the time to post like 50 other Dishonored videos. If
you want to glitch the last room and not fight the last 3 guys, look about 3
paragraphs up in the guide. Again, I won't judge you.
Incidentally, once you have completed this challenge, you have honed your
headshot skills significantly. If you rage quit the By My Hand Alone trophy
like I did, you may want to spend a few hours seeing if your new skills help
on this one. For me, it didn't. I had to learn more from some of the other
challenges, but we'll get to those in a bit. Next, it's time for the Oil Drop!
I have to say that I'm a little disappointed at how easy this one turned out to
be, what with all the screaming and yelling in the last two challenges. Only a
little, though: I've already spent 2 solid weeks on a $5.00 DLC. Anyway, the
oil drop is really easy, then gets really hard when you try to 3 star it, then
gets really easy again once you know what to do. You're basically standing on
a platform, this train is going to shoot some whale oil out of it, and you have
to hit it before it hits you. If you miss, there's a good chance it will
explode, taking some of your health. Also, some of the tanks do special things
depending on what color they are, but you'll pick it up pretty quickly. There
is no expert mode, and no special trophy for this: just get your 30,000 and
move on.
First, pick up Emily's doll. It's in the bushes at the front of the level.
Just get smashed by a few tanks of oil while you're rooting around, and then
you won't have to worry about it again. There will be 5 trains. I've found
the best place to stand is in the back left (as you're facing the train)
corner. When the first train shows up, head over to that corner and get ready
for some target practice. Put your crosshairs a little above the 3rd door (the
back one) of the train. In this position, you can hit almost anything that
comes out without moving much. Just get your timing down, and you should be
all right. The second train will come in. Same thing, just position your
crosshairs at the 3rd door and use that as your base point. Just keep doing
this all the way until level 5.
You'll notice as you go that each round spits salvos of increasing amounts of
oil tanks. This is actually a benefit in round 5, because you'll almost always
get one coming straight out of that 3rd door. Also, when it gets up to 5, they
almost always chain together and explode. So, if you can just survive until
the 5th level, get the timing right and you'll be over 30,000 in no time. The
5th level is infinite, so it doesn't even matter how low your score is going
in. You only have 4 shots before you have to reload, but you can press square
to do it at any point when you have a moment. So, wait for the salvo, crack
off 4 shots, wait for the next salvo. One in the chain will probably give you
more health, so even if you miss a few you'll end up with full health. No
joke: just get the hang of the mechanics and you'll be just fine on this one.
Moving on...
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
+ +
+ 6) BEND TIME MASSACRE +
+ +
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
I was just about to write a statement about how refreshingly non-random this
challenge was. I was wrong. This game is definitely the master of semi-random
gaming as far as I'm concerned, and it makes this challenge harder than you
would think, much like all the ones before it. You have to make it through 6
rounds, with a bonus round after each one. Kill whatever the minimum amount is
to move on, all while time stops. If you fail, fortunately, you can restart
that round until you pass. After each one there will be a bonus round that you
can only try once. Each bonus round has, you guessed it, two possible
scenarios, and which one you get is random.
First of all, let's get our goals in line. There is no Expert mode, so you'll
only need your 30,000 score one time. That's one goal. Getting Emily's doll
is your second: I think it's there the whole time during this challenge, but
I didn't get it until round 6. If you wait until round 6, just run down by
the red room at the other end of the level, then blink up and keep going down
the metal pieces floating above the void. It's on the end of that little
"plank," under the greenhouse type roof. The third goal is the Time Management
trophy: you can earn this in either this challenge or in Kill Chain, for doing
basically the same thing. Since I haven't done that one yet, I'm going to walk
you through getting the trophy in this challenge: it's not exceptionally hard,
but will take some practice. You need to get through all 6 rounds, and all 6
bonuses without failing a challenge. That means you have to pass all the
levels on your first try, which isn't all that hard.
The funny part about this challenge is that once you have a plan of attack for
each level and can execute it, you'll probably get both goals within a run or
two of each other. Not all 30,000 point runs will include passing all the
bonus levels, and not all 12 for 12 runs will be over 30,000 points. However,
when you get good at them all, it's only a matter of time before you nail this
both ways.
A few quick notes before you start: once again, the bonus system is really
messed up. On the first level alone I've had between 1200 and 4100 points for
doing essentially the same thing. Second, you get more points for creative
kills, which are ones from whale oil tanks, falling speakers, grenades and
spring razors. Third, once you pass a level, you'll have a bonus level that's
selected randomly from two options: I'll call them EASY and HARD, based on my
own opinion, but your playing style may be different than mine. Regardless,
I'll walk you through each one.
LEVEL ONE: Before you break the glass, walk around to the right until you're
right behind the guard that's facing away from you. Now wait for about 20
seconds, and you'll see the guard that was on the left walk over toward the
other two by the front. As soon as all 3 of them are close together, break the
glass and grab the whale oil. Throw it right at the middle guy, then back up
and line your gun up with the head of the closest guard. When the timer gets
below 1 second, pull the trigger. If you did this correctly, the whale oil
will take out the 3 guards, and your bullet will pop the other one's head right
at the same time. You should end this level over 3,000 points for your
troubles. If you don't, restarting is pretty easy at this point.
LEVEL ONE EASY BONUS: The easy version of this bonus level is the one with the
duel right in front of you. It seems hard since you have no weapons, but once
you know what to do you can get this every time. Switch to your Possession
power and break the glass. Now possess the dude that's about to be shot and
walk him over to the back corner. Release him and possess the dude that's
shooting. What you do with him now is up to you: you can either put him in
front of his own bullet, or walk his ass out the front window and off the
ledge. That's it! One dead guy, one saved guy!
LEVEL ONE HARD BONUS: The hard version of this is the one where you have to
kill 3 guys with stuff you picked up. This one isn't that hard either: just
grab the brick that's right by you, walk around like you did in the main level,
and break the glass with the brick. Pick it out of the air and chuck it at the
back of the close guy's head, then throw the whale oil at the other two.
LEVEL TWO: There are 6 people to kill here: three of them are standing under
the giant speaker, and 3 walk around. If you wait until one of the guards is
next to the nobles, you can kill 4 with one bullet. So do that: wait for the
guard to get close, then shoot straight through the glass at the speaker. Now,
switch to your grenade and throw one right at another guard, then jump over and
kill the 6th guy with your knife. You should be close to 7,000 after the first
two rounds, even if you don't get the bonuses.
LEVEL TWO EASY BONUS: You get a whopping 2 seconds to kill the 3 nobles
without messing up the guards. Just wait for the guards to walk away. Break
the glass and put a spring razor right in the middle of the 3. Done.
LEVEL TWO HARD BONUS: In order to get the bonus for this, you have to drop the
speaker on all 6 people in the room. There is a pretty good method to this
that I've found to work every single time. Run around to the upper window.
See the guy circling clockwise around the far island? Wait for him to come
around again (about 15 seconds), until he's right by the two nobles. Now shoot
the speaker. Pan left and a little down and select your possession. Get the
guard and walk him into the middle, then let him go. You should be looking
right at the other guard, so move a little right so you're sure to get him and
possess him. Walk him in. You should be looking at the lady by the door.
Hit R1 twice to possess her (you'll need a potion, which is what the first R1
is all about) and get her closer to the group if you can. Done.
LEVEL THREE: This is a pretty straightforward battle. There are 8 people in
here, and you need to kill 7 to move on. There's a guard all the way on your
right. Break the glass with your knife, shoot at the guard, then pick up the
whale oil tank right there at your feet. Chuck it towards the table, and you
should kill everyone else with 5 or 6 seconds to spare. There is also a guard
to the far left that likes to survive the blast, so you may want to pop him
one if you can see him with all the whale oil exploding.
LEVEL THREE EASY BONUS: The Patience bonus: kill 9 enemies, but none of them
can die before time starts again. This is aptly named: before you break the
glass, wait about 20 seconds until the far left guard moves to the opposite
side of the table. You should now have 3 groups of 3 people. Aim a regular
grenade at the middle one closest to you, then turn right and drop a spring
razor right in the middle of the three by the stairs. Run all the way back
around the table (you have plenty of time) and drop a sticky grenade on the
floor at the feet of the other 3. This should get you all 9 every time.
LEVEL THREE HARD BONUS: This bonus is a real pain in the ass, and is half of
the reason why this level is the hardest. You have to hit this art dealer guy
4 times using 4 crossbow bolts, and each one has to go through a pane of glass!
Since you only have 4 bolts, and there are only 4 panes of glass, you will have
to be perfect. In addition, you have a whopping 30 seconds to get this. First
off, wait until the guy stops walking around. It will be right by where you
are, so line up and take your first shot. Walk forward through the glass after
your shot for a split second, then back up and go to the window on your left.
Hit him again through this window and walk a little ways in as well. The
reason you're doing this is that you need to make sure the shots hit him before
moving on to the next glass. Otherwise, he'll move by the time your next dart
finds its mark. Also, aim for the body shot with your bolts: you just have to
hit him 4 times. Now, run as fast as you can around the outside of the area,
until you come to the next 2 panes of glass. Repeat with shots 3 and 4, but
watch out for the guys that will walk in your path. Good luck, and hopefully
you are on to level 4!
LEVEL FOUR: If you do this level well, you can get almost 12,000 points in
this room alone. There are 13 people in the area, and you'll need at least 10
to move on. The trick to destroying this room is to ignore all the guards on
the right, as well as the whale oil at your feet. Equip your sticky grenade,
break the glass with your knife, and run forward and to the left a little. Put
the grenade somewhere in the center of the people on the left. Now, toss a
regular grenade at one of the people across the table. At this point, it's
time to make a little loop through the upper area, killing as many people as
you can before time runs out. I think there are 4 up there: one in the first
room, one at the top of each set of stairs, and one by the back window. If you
can get them all, your grenades should take care of the other 9 in spectacular
fashion.
LEVEL FOUR EASY BONUS: The easy one, at least in my opinion, is the one with
the three Pendleton brothers that have to be eliminated. There's a trick to
this that makes it easy. Run immediately up to the other area before you break
the glass. You should see one of them walking by the back window. When he
stops, break the glass then fire a revolver shot at him. Run up to him now and
carry him out to the void. Throw him over the rail. Run back to the first
area and possess either one of the remaining brothers. Walk him out to the
ledge then let him go. If his feet are off the ledge, leave him. If not, kill
him and throw him over. Then possess the other one and do the same thing.
There is a decent amount of time to do this once you know where the guys are,
but I suggest you break both panes of glass in the lower room when you first go
in. You don't want the dumbass Pendletons banging into panes of glass, do you?
LEVEL FOUR HARD BONUS: This is the one with the whale oil. You have 6 seconds
to kill 10 people using only exploding whale oil tanks. Hmm, 6 seconds, huh?
There are 2 ways to do this: the lucky way and the good way. The lucky way is
to wait for the guard to go up the steps to your left, break the glass, grab
the whale oil right next to you, run about 3 steps and chuck it up the stairs.
If you hit the steps right, it will explode and cause the other cans to explode
as well. This may or may not kill 10 people, though, so don't be mad if you
don't get it all the time. The other way is to run to the top room and break
the glass with a crossbow dart aimed right at the tank. Run down to where you
started immediately and grab the other tank. Chuck it anywhere you can before
your 6 seconds runs out, and you should get your kills more frequently. Good
luck with this one: I hate it.
LEVEL FIVE: I honestly think this is one of the easiest levels of the bunch,
bonuses included. There are 12 people, and you need to kill 7. However, the
area is divided into 2 rooms with only 6 people each. No problem: start at
the lower room by going to the window that overlooks the room (it's to your
left when you start). This area should look familiar from level 2, and the
patterns are the same as well. So, wait for one of the guards to get close to
the nobles and shoot the speaker. Now, take 1 or 2 more shots at the other
guards, depending on how much time you have, but stay out of the room. When
you're ready, sprint back to the first room, equip your sticky grenade, and
run on in. These dopes love to stand in a nice little pack for you, so drop
your grenade and enjoy your 6 easy kills. If I'm short on score, I actually
like to make sure I have all 6 guys in the first room, even if I run out of
time before dropping my final grenade. This way, I restart the level if I'm
not fast enough, but I get all 12 people if I am. Just sayin'...
LEVEL FIVE EASY BONUS: The goal is to kill High Overseer Campbell with the
whale oil tank. The only problem is that you have no weapons! Just kidding,
it's no problem. Before you break the glass in front of you, run to your right
to where your target is. Pick up the Bull Rat Fetus (eww, I actually had to
type that?) and chuck it at the window. Now, go back to where you were and
throw the other fetus at the other window. Now you can just pick up the whale
oil, run up to the room, throw the thing in there and finish this every time.
Again, thanks to our guests for standing all together: you can earn about
2,000 bonus points if you kill all 6, in addition to the 1,000 for completing
this.
LEVEL FIVE HARD BONUS: In this one, you have to kill all 6 overseers, but
there is no penalty for killing the other people. This makes it almost (not
quite) just like the main level. The only difference is this: when you go
over to the lower room, let that far guard pass 3 times before shooting the
speaker. This way, the other 2 overseers will be on the left side of the room
where you can shoot them. Shoot them both (it will be hard through the glass
shards, but your auto-aim will help, and they'll be in the same place every
time) then haul ass up to the top room. I actually leave my revolver equipped
at first, in case I see an Overseer a little away from the crowd. Then I can
pop him, drop my sticky grenade, and move right along. If you are going for
the Time Management trophy, this can be a very stressful challenge, since
you're so close to the end. Just practice the level, trust your skills, and
you'll be just fine.
LEVEL SIX: Okay, you have finally made it to the last level, and it is a
toughie. There are 20 people in here and you need to kill 15. If you do this
well, expect a score over 7,000 just for this area though, so it's definitely
worth developing a good method. I actually run all the way to the other side
of the level before I break the glass. It will come in handy in a minute as
well. Since you have already done this area in level 2, I'm sure you know how
to make it work. The only difference this time is to let one of the guards
live for the sake of time. Wait till 2 of them are just to the right of the
nobles. Fire at the speaker, then knife the two guards. Keep running right
up to the next level. You want a sticky grenade to the left, and a regular
one to the right. If you have a moment, shoot the whale oil tank that's been
there since round 3. Slice the guard at the base of the stairs and run up
either one, killing anyone you see. Using this strategy will get you at least
15 kills almost every time.
LEVEL SIX EASY BONUS: Haha, just kill 10 people with your sword. After all
this, do you really need a walkthrough for this one?
LEVEL SIX HARD BONUS: Not so fast, though, the day isn't done just yet. If
you are unlucky enough to get the Hero Bonus after 11 successful rounds, I feel
bad for you. I have to be honest with you: I never did complete this bonus
round. I got my Time Management trophy with the other bonus round. I saw a
video where this was actually accomplished, so I'll at least describe what I
saw here. He came in at the top room and grabbed the first tank, then turned
around and chucked it out of the window he just came through. Then, he ran
back in where he started, ran down the stairs, grabbed the second one, and ran
back up and threw it out the same window. Finally, he blinked down to the
lower room, broke one of the panes of glass first, picked up the third tank,
and chucked it out the window he just broke. My problem was that some asshole
was always on the stairs when I tried to get down to the second tank,
effectively blowing my chances of getting there before time ran out. Anyway,
if you can do this in 20 seconds without killing anyone, and you're a better
gamer than I! Next up, Kill Chain!
THE BASICS- Wow, I really expected another marathon session here, but got
52,000 on my first run, BY LEVEL 3. This is going to be a very short
walkthrough, just because the focus of the guide is on getting your trophies,
not playing each level to the max. If you get 52,000 on your first 3 levels,
you can end the challenge, take your 3 stars and move on. That's what I did,
mostly because I've already spent 3 weeks on this DLC and I'm ready to start
something else. If you want to keep playing, go ahead: it's the fun that's
important.
You'll be in this little rail yard, and you'll have to keep your kill chain
alive. Meaning you have to kill each guy within 4 seconds of each other.
Creative kills count, and so does the speed between kills. There are two
things that make this ridiculously easy: first, the guys are completely
unaware of you, and they don't move even after possessing them. Second, you
can restart the level if you fail until you pass. Any number of times.
There will be 6 rounds, with a bonus between each, just like Bend Time
Massacre. You CAN earn the Time Management trophy in this challenge, but I'm
assuming you already got it during the previous challenge. As such, there
will be no guide for how to do this in Kill Chain.
THE WALKTHROUGH- When you start round 1, lean over the rail and look at the
ground to your right. See the big skull there? That indicates where the
speaker will fall if you shoot it down. One guy is already there, so possess
the other two and stick them under the speaker. Then shoot the speaker. All
3 guys will die in 1 second, giving you a reliable score around 4500. Now do
the same thing for your bonus round. Round 2 will give you 6 enemies. Two of
them are standing together, 3 are around the bottom somewhere, and 1 is up
with you looking out at the void. Go down and possess the 3 guys that are
scattered, and walk them all into a cluster by the two that are together. Now,
take the whale oil tank and set it down gently, right by the cluster. Run back
up to where you started and chuck a grenade in their general direction. As
soon as its thrown, run over to the last guy and kill him. If you did this
right, you will have 10,000-20,000 points depending on how it counted your
kills for the 5 guys. The bonus for round 2 isn't all that bad either, but
its irrelevant at this point.
Level 3 has 10 guys, and they're always in the same place. Your goal here is
to make 3 little clusters of enemies. Take the dude way out on the tip of the
level and walk him over to the speaker. Take the other two and put them either
under the speaker or in the group to the left. Now, take 2 of the whale oil
tanks and set them down in the group on the ground, over by the arc pylon.
Your third tank comes upstairs with you, and goes right in the middle of this
group of guys. Ready for some fun? Chuck a grenade at the two tanks you left
downstairs, then immediately pan up and shoot the speaker. Now pan right and
shoot your 3rd tank. If you do this quickly enough, you can get 30,000 points
in about 3.5 seconds!
If you have reached 30,000 by this point, congratulations. You can actually
end the challenge, take your 3 stars, and move on without ever seeing the last
three levels. If you'd like to play more, go for it: there are some more
guys, but the principles are the same. Have fun, and I'll see you in the next
challenge.
Oh shit, I forgot Emily's doll! It's there the whole time, under the railroad
tracks. If you go to the far right corner by the speaker you've been
dropping, you can drop down on some rocks and get to a tunnel with the doll in
it.
Of all the rotten... This stupid freakin... Grumble, grumble. Let's just put
it this way: this challenge is definitely on my list of most frustrating video
game moments. It might be easier for you, but it certainly wasn't for me. Let
me explain why. The challenge is simple: just jump and blink from beam to
beam, and collect as many as you can before time expires. Unfortunately, it's
not that easy at all, and it's for stupid reasons. First, if you want to
sprint, you'll have to press L3 after EVERY blink. Second, when you jump to
scale a wall or a vent, sometimes it doesn't work. I like to call this the
stubby jump. Third, you'll have to haul ass, and I mean really haul ass. You
almost never have time to line up your jump, so you'll spend a lot of time
aiming in the air. Fourth, the beams come up in random locations, so you have
to react, identify which one is next, and get going almost instantly. Fifth,
your area is a chopped up series of islands with nothing but void if you get
your jumps a little bit off. Plan on playing this a few times. Like a
thousand. We won't even talk about expert mode yet.
Feel good about your chances? Good. Let's start by getting our goals in
line: you have to get 30,000 points in both Normal and Expert modes, get
Emily's Doll, and get the Daredevil trophy for "tricky jumps." Let's begin
with the Normal Mode.
As with everything in these trials, the beam spawn locations are not quite
random. The first two will spawn in the same place every time, so at least you
can get good at that. For the rest of the level, your next beam will spawn in
one of 7 locations. I'm going to be referring to these quite a bit, so let's
identify them now. Let's call the place you start "South," and the place
you're looking when you start "North."
Location 1 is right in the middle of the level, where your first beam spawns.
Location 2 is where the second beam always spawns. It's in the far north of
the area, in the second floor of a building. Location 3 is just west of point
2, on the roof of a building. Location 4 is further west, on the very tip of
the floating building that's leaning to one side. Location 5 is just south of
location 4, on a little island at the lowest level of the area. Location 6 is
on the steps at your starting point, in the far south of the area. Location 7
is at the far east end of the level, also in a busted up building.
Now, with 7 locations, your next spawn will be in one of 6 possible directions.
This makes 42 paths that you will have to get really good at before you make a
run at this. I will not list all 42 paths individually, but I'll try to give
you at least a little advice on getting somewhere from each location.
Location 1- From here, you can take 5 possible routes to your next beam. If
you're going to location 2, jump straight ahead to the white wall, then climb
to the street. Blink right in front of the vent, then climb that. Run to your
right until you're in front of the closed window, then double jump up to the
beam. If you're headed to 3 or 4, blink a little to your left to the main
street, then run forward and double jump to the vent at the dead end. From
here, climb and blink to either beam. If 5 is your goal, you can actually jump
right there with a double-jump/blink combo (referred to from here on as the Air
Blink). Same with 6, just in a different direction. Getting to 7 will require
an Air Blink to the cement floating on the corner of the building, then a jump
to the ledge, followed by a jump into the window.
If you're at 2, getting to 3 and 4 involves blinking out of the side window.
1, 5 6, and 7 will be done by jumping out the front window, turning in mid-air,
and blinking towards your target.
If you're at 3, you can see almost any of the targets, so just go there.
If you're at 4, blink right back down to location 3 every time. You can get
anywhere from there.
If you're stuck down at 5, things are a little tricky. There are some really
hard jumps that take you to 1 and 7, but the safest way is to jump north to the
ledge and follow the street to anywhere. The exception is location 6 (the one
where you started). You can actually Air Blink to the big pile of rocks and
run right at it, but it will take some practice before you nail this jump.
From 6, you can go up the little rock on your right, then blink to the floating
wood. This will take you to 7. For 1 and 5, run forward and blink straight
there from the initial platform. There are a few ways you can get to location
2, but I trust you will find your favorite pretty quickly. For 3 and 4, curse
your luck and run dead ahead. Jump completely over the little island and head
for the vent straight ahead. A little practice and you can Air Blink right up
here.
From location 7, there are 3 ways to leave the building: out the window, out
the hole on the south side against the flow of floating platforms, or out the
road to the north. For every single location, I suggest you get used to
running out on the road. The other two routes are really, really hard to nail
consistently, unless you take a bunch of time to line up your jumps. In my
opinion, this time is better spent running and not falling, but feel free to
try them if you'd like. They are faster if you can hit them.
Now that we have locations and routes, let's talk about the actual challenge.
The worst part about this whole thing is the time: at first, you start with
30 seconds, and the first 5 beams you get will give you a 10 second bonus.
After that, you'll only get 5 seconds of extra time when you get each beam.
Within a few runs, you'll find that it's pretty easy to get 8 or 10 thousand,
and you'll say to yourself, "Shoot, this isn't so bad." True, but that's
because you used all that extra time in the first 8 beams, and you'll need to
spread it out over something like 22. Of the 42 paths, only about a dozen can
be reliably run in 5 seconds or less, so you will lose that extra time on at
least two thirds of your segments. Some of the paths, like from 6 to 4, take
at least 12 seconds to run on a good day, so a few of these will burn through
that time quicker than you can -heh heh- blink.
Scoring is actually the easiest part of this challenge to figure out. You get
1,000 points for each beam. If you get one "fast," you get 500 additional
points. If you get one "very fast," you get 1,000 extra points. If you make
a "tricky jump," you also get 1,000 extra points. The score, however, is
mostly out of your control: if you get lucky and the beam spawns close to
you, you'll get a bonus. If you don't, you won't. With that said, you'll
probably need somewhere between 21 and 25 beams to get your 30,000 points. If
you want to play the "tricky jump" game, see the next section, but I've found
that they are called tricky jumps for a reason. The extra time it takes to
get them makes the extra points not worth it.
Though the randomness of the challenge makes it impossible to walk you through
beam by beam, I will give you a few quick tips. First, blink as much as you
can. Second, if you're doing an Air Blink, jump first, then aim while you're
in the air. Third, go like hell, and get all your paths down to where it's
almost automatic. I've found this game to be one of plateaus: once you get
all your paths down, you'll find that you made a perfect run, with pretty good
spawns, and still fell short by 15,000. Do this consistently and it means your
routes need to be faster. Figure out a few new ones, get them nailed down, and
see if your scores go up. The interesting thing is that when you start
plateauing around 20,000, you're only one lucky spawn away from a 3 star
rating. It will be hard to tell, because you're fighting your own mistakes and
the spawn locations, but once you get all 42 paths figured out, you'll have
this 3 star rating. Good luck!
EMILY'S DOLL- Now that you have your 3 stars, you're probably wondering how
you got all around this level 1,000 times and never saw the doll. Well, it's
because it's way up high, higher than you've had a need to go just yet. Never
fear, we'll get it right now. Get to spawn point 4, the one on the tilted
building. Preferably, do this when there's a checkpoint there, so you can fall
a bunch and start right on the building. If you look just to the left from the
top of the building, you'll see an island with a tree floating way up high.
The doll is at the base of the tree. I've found the easiest way to do this is
to back down the building just a little bit and jump from there. Once you get
the doll, make a note of where it was: you'll need this island in the next
section when we start talking about tricky jumps.
Umm, this is really only a bronze trophy? Well, I hope you're as dedicated to
completion as I am, because this might be the hardest trophy I ever got. Never
mind, that honor still goes to By My Hand Alone. Hopefully, I can help save
you 3 or 4 days on this, but so much of it is about luck that I can't even
guarantee that. I wasn't originally going to put math in here, but I think the
number of attempts you'll be taking for this justifies a few extra paragraphs.
First of all, let's get the basics down: there are 6 "tricky jumps" in the
level, and you need to complete all 6 in a single round to get the trophy. In
order for the jump to count, there has to be a beam of light waiting for you at
the end of it, so you have to wait for the right beam to spawn, then execute
the jump. That's all.
Unfortunately, it's not that simple, because you will be seriously battling the
clock, the stubby jumps, and the general randomness of it all. Before I get
into statistics on this, I am going to make 3 assumptions. First, I assume
that each spawn is totally random, which I'm not sure is true. The game sure
likes to send you the wrong way more often than the right way, but that might
just be frustration on my part. Second, I will assume that you can execute
each jump every single time you try it: this is a shaky assumption, but just
take any number you see and multiply it by your execution percent to know what
you can expect. The better you are, the closer you'll get to these numbers.
Third, I will assume that you won't attempt this trophy on any run unless you
get the first 2 jumps with 26 seconds or more remaining on the clock. It's the
only way to get this trophy anyway, and they're not random. Now that we have
the basic setup, the six jumps are as follows:
Jump 1: This one is not random. When you first start the level, turn left and
jump down to where point 5 is (the one on the west side). Stand right outside
the middle arch and face the beam of light. You have to get from where you are
to the beam of light in "one jump." This is extremely misleading, as you can
actually do it with two quick jumps. There are 3 ways to accomplish this: you
can take a running start and air blink right over there, but it's really hard
to do consistently. You can blink up to the arch above you, then immediately
to the beam. This is the one in the two videos I saw, but I never got this to
work for me either. The third way was the most consistent for me. Look just
to the left of the beam from where you're standing, and you'll see a little
plant about halfway up the island with a little rock jutting out from it.
Blink right to that, then jump out to the right a little and blink up to the
beam. If you do this quickly, it will count every time. You should get your
first jump and still have at least 29 seconds on your clock. When you can do
this, it's time to move on. Just keep restarting the challenge until you're
ready.
Jump 2: This one is not random either, and these first two form the key to
doing this whole thing in an hour or so. From the first beam, blink right
back to where you started, then run to the little rock that juts out toward
point 7. If your timer was 29 seconds after the first beam, you should see a
brown platform drifting away from you. Blink onto that, then run to the front
of it, angle up, and air blink to the next platform. Run to the front and
blink to the third, then the fourth. Don't jump for these two, as you'll
overshoot. Or, jump from halfway if you're good at air blinking. When you
get to the 4th platform, look left. There should be two diagonal windows that
you can get through to get to the second beam. Go through either one, though
I prefer the bigger one, and claim your second tricky jump. If you are off on
time a little, your experience may vary. The first few times I did this, I
actually just took my whole 30 seconds from the beginning and rode the first
platform up to see what I was shooting for. Once I did that, the rest came
fairly easily. If you can get these first two jumps and still have 26 or more
seconds on the clock, you are ready for the other four.
Jump 3: Now that the first two are fairly doable, it's time for the random
jumps. This one requires that point 5 be the current target, and you can get
here decently from most of the level. It's way better if you're up by point
2 or 3, of course, but use your judgment if you think you can get there. In
a direct line between points 2 and 5, there is a ruined building. On the
second story there is a little, square, wooden platform. Get up here and go to
the corner closest to the beam. Now air blink from here directly onto the
beam. Try to come at it from the right side as you jump, so you don't hit the
second story of this room. This will take quite a bit of practice, and I've
found it's the hardest one to get consistently. This is why I try to get it
done as quickly as possible: if my round is ruined, I'd rather know right up
front.
Jump 4: This one requires point 7 to be your active target. It helps if
you're already at point 6, where you started the level, but you can get there
pretty quickly from most of the area anyway. From point 6, run to the rock
outcropping just like in jump 2, and blink to whatever floating platform is
there. From here, as you ride it up, you'll see a little window to the left of
the hole in the building. It should be red, since the beam of light is right
behind it. Air blink through that window and onto the beam, and tricky jump 4
will be yours. This one is just hard to execute, but once you get good at it,
you should get it every time.
Jump 5: Back to point 5 again, but this time for the easiest one of the bunch.
When you run directly north from the start of the challenge, you know how you
skip the little island in between the long stretches of street? This time,
don't skip it. In fact, don't even blink, just double jump from the piece that
looks like a welcome mat when you're going really fast. From the island, turn
left and run right up to the tip of the rock. You can double jump right onto
beam 5 from here and get your tricky jump, or you can blink right through it,
fall into the void, and still get your tricky jump. I like to blink, just to
make sure. Just make sure you hit the beam before you hit the ground. This is
by far the easiest, but will require you to stay alive long enough for beam 5
to spawn twice... not always an easy task.
Jump 6: This jump scared the crap out of me at first, but once I learned to do
it, it became the most fun of the bunch. In fact, I used it quite a bit in my
normal runs from then on, since it's the quickest way to get from point 4 to
points 1, 6, or 7. In order to get this jump, point 1 has to be active. It
helps tremendously if you're close to point 4 when this happens, even more so
if it was the last checkpoint. The reason for this is that it's easy to fall
in the void, but you'll start right back at the top of the tilted building.
Anyway, from the tilted building, jump over to where you found Emily's doll,
then walk all the way to the end and turn left. There will be a little rock
that juts out, and in the distance, you'll see a huge statue. Line the beam
up with the statue, then take a flying leap off this island. Line your blink
up so it's horizontal, and don't let go until you're at least halfway done
falling. If you do this right, you'll land right on the beam and take home
your trophy! This is one jump you can actually practice without the beam being
there. If you land on the island, you'll get the jump, and if you don't, you
can start over right up at the tilted building. Just make sure there's a beam
there when you do it for real, though.
Now that you know where all 6 jumps are, take about 100 tries and master them
all, or at least 3 and 6. The first two will come with time, and the reset
cost is pretty low in terms of time. Jumps 4 and 5 are fairly easy, but 3 and

6 are the easiest to miss and will frustrate the hell out of you when you do.
Also, if I know I'm losing anyway, I like to run up the tilted building and
practice jump 6 a few times, just so I stay fresh on how to make it. Once you
are confident that you can execute each jump without stopping more than a
second to line them up, it's time to try this for real.
Once you're good at getting around the area, and really good at making all 6
jumps, you are now at the mercy of the randomness of the game. Here's where
the numbers come into play: since there are 7 spawn locations, and the next
one won't spawn either where you are or where your last one was, that leaves 5
possible "next beam" locations from any point on the map. So, if you're hoping
for, say, beam 5 to spawn, you have a 20% chance that it will. If you are
looking for a specific 2-beam pattern, your chances are 1/25, or 4%, and if
it's 3 specific beams you're looking for, the odds drop to 1/125, or a little
less than 1%.
This is why I hate this challenge: the quickest way to do this, not counting
the first two jumps, is in 5 beams: 5, 4, 1, 7, and 5 again. Beam 4 is
actually an extra, but you'll need at least one to spawn on your way around, or
you'll run out of time. You could actually go 5, 1, 6, 7 and 5 again, as well
as a few other routes, but that's about it for the easy way. Now, the
probability of getting one specific combination is 1/3,125. That means you
would have to do more than 3,000 runs to get the one you're looking for! I
hope that if you attempt this method, you are good enough to nail the jumps
when it happens, because if you miss you'll be waiting another 3,000 tries to
get another shot!
Don't freak out just yet, the odds are a little better than that of getting
this trophy: not by much, though. Let's narrow it down a little bit. First,
I am convinced that the only way to get all 6 jumps in time is to start with
jump 3, and quickly. If you get done with your second jump, and the next spawn
is at point 6 or 7, reset immediately. You just don't have time to get all the
way over there and get the other 3 jumps while waiting for beam 5 to spawn
twice. So, from point 2, your successful route would be 5, 3-5, 4-5, 3-4-5, or
4-3-5. That's all. You just might, maybe, be able to work 2 in again there,
or go straight to 4-1 and still complete this, but the probability is too
remote to include. This means that you're shooting for jump 3 as your third
jump of the challenge, and you have a 30% chance of getting it. That means
that 70% of the time you'll start, get your first 2 jumps, then reset before
you get another one. Ugh.
But we're only halfway done. If you nailed jump 3, you are actually in the
best position to get your next jump flexibly. If you get a chance to get jump
6 out of the way right now, go for it. You can go 1, 3-1, 4-1, 3-4-1, or
4-3-1 to get this one, but any other spawn in between and you're screwed.
That's another 30%. You can go for jump 5, but only by going 7-1-5, which is
only 1%. Finally, you could head for jump 4, which can be 7 or 6-7, at 24%.
Of course, you don't get to pick which beam you go for- the game chooses for
you. Also, you could have 7-4 or some shit pop up, which ruins your chances.
The point is, once you have the third jump under your belt, you actually have
a 55% chance of getting your 4th jump with enough time left to make this work.
In case you're keeping track at home, your total odds of getting to your 4th
jump is now down to 16.5%. Ugh.
So you made it to 4 jumps. Now we go for our 5th. Your route will depend on
where you're standing when your 4th jump is complete. From point 7 you can get
to jump 5 with 5, 7-5, 2-5, 3-5, or 2-3-5. You won't have time for any other
combination, because your last jump is the one that takes at least 15 seconds
from where you are. If you get to jump 6, it's either 1, 2-1, 3-1 or 4-1.
Shit. That's a whopping 55%. If you're at point 5, you have almost no chance,
but there's only a 4% chance that you'll be here anyway. If you're at point 1
after your 4th jump, you can go 5, 7, 6-7 or 6-5, and that's all. That's 48%.
Now, I'm going to round here and say you have a 50% chance of getting to your
5th jump in time, which makes about an 8% chance overall.
The possibilities are really interesting for the 6th jump from a statistical
standpoint, and really annoying from a gaming standpoint. It actually doesn't
matter where your 5th jump lands: you will have so little time by this point,
that you almost HAVE to make your last jump on the next beam: that's why it's
pretty common to get 5 jumps, but will take all freaking day to get the sixth
one. Since the chances of that beam you need spawning are 20%, and you only
had an 8% chance of getting here in the first place, the actual probability of
getting this challenge, even if you hit every single jump every single time,
is a little less than 2%. There you have it-- only about 1 run in 75 will
actually spawn in an order that makes this trophy possible. Realistically,
you can accomplish about 50 runs in an hour, so you're looking at 90 minutes
of straight failure before you even SEE a spawn pattern that you can get this
trophy with. This actually was about my rate, and that's why it's so important
to keep your skills up so you don't screw up the one run that gives you a
chance. Trust me: I screwed up at least 10 of these runs before I finally
nailed it, which comes to about 900 minutes, or 15 hours of this same damn
challenge. Good luck.
Ooh boy. As if the rest of this wasn't bad enough, now it's time for expert
mode. The best players in the game have complained that it took them 3 hours
or so to get 3 stars on this: for me, it was more like 12. The spawn
locations, scoring, and timing are mostly the same, but there are a few key
differences. I'll outline them below, then offer a strategy for getting this.
Before you attempt this, though, I strongly suggest you get a cup of coffee,
and plan on keeping your PS3 on for a very long time. I'll explain in a
minute.
Health- You will receive a health bonus based on the amount of health you
have when you finish the challenge. You get 10 points for every percent
remaining, but the max is only 1,000. Since the lowest score increment
otherwise is 500, this really becomes irrelevant. If you start dying, you'll
probably fail quickly anyway.
Mana- Your mana gauge will now fill slowly, like in normal game play.
Fortunately, there are mana vials available in the level, which will respawn
every 20 seconds, I think. There are at least 7 locations for mana vials, but
only 5 are really useful. You'll have to change your routes a little to make
sure to get these when you can. Also, if you're on a long run with low mana,
wait for the bar to replenish for a few seconds before you blink again. It
might just make your run successful.
Assassins- The other differences are really minor compared to this one. There
will be 6 (I think) assassins skulking about, waiting to screw you up badly.
Don't try to kill them: they'll just respawn. Avoiding them is really more
a matter of luck than skill, but here are a few tips: first, don't stop
moving, even for a second. Next, they will follow you around, but you are
faster than them. What tends to happen, then, is that they will eventually
end up all in the same place. If you have a good run going and can identify
where they are, then avoid routes that take you past them.
The Glitch- Okay, here's a trick that will make your 3 star rating immensely
easier. There is a glitch that occurs that will make the Assassins disappear
from the level. It involves restarting a bunch of times, without turning the
game off. Some have said they got it after about 20 restarts. Some have
said it was after about 3 hours. Some have said that it's linked to
restarting right when you fall in the void. I did this for a long, long time
and finally got the glitch to happen, but I didn't do anything differently
from my first 1,000 runs. So, unfortunately, I can't give you any tips that
are reliable. But, if you leave the game on (don't even exit back to the
challenge selection), you may just get this to happen. The nice part about
this glitch, though, is that every time it's been reported, the assassins
stay away for as long as you keep playing! This means that if you leave the
game on, you can play indefinitely without assassins until you get your 3
star rating. Again, you may get a lucky run and beat this before glitching
the game. You may get the glitch and be home free. What I can tell you is
that if you play a few times and then try something else, you won't get the
glitch to work.
The Strategy- Now that you know what you're up against, I suggest you
approach it like this: first, focus on just getting the 3 stars before you
do anything else with your PS3. Now, start the game and practice your new
routes with the mana vials included, as well as blinking less to keep your
mana up. Ignore the assassins if you can. Every time your level is almost
over, fall into the void and restart just as the screen turns grey. Once
you are comfortable with the new routes, start trying to get 30,000 points
with a nice, smooth run. When you get sick of doing this, just walk away or
watch TV or something, but DON'T TURN OFF THE GAME. When you want to be
beaten up some more, come back and do it again. Eventually, one of two
things will happen: either you'll get 30,000 in a run, or you'll glitch the
game and have infinite chances without the assassins. Either way, you'll be
one step closer to Void Star!
One other note: now that you are sickeningly familiar with tricky jumps,
you may be tempted to get them at every opportunity when going for 3 stars
on expert mode: I mean, you get an extra 1,000 points, right? Yes, that is
true, but remember that you get the 1,000 points without getting any extra
time. At an average of about 7 seconds between beams on a good run, this
means that you lose only about 2 seconds of time for each one. So if you can
execute a tricky jump in less than 2 seconds, it pays to do so. If not, skip
it and head straight for the beam. I've noticed that I tend to use jumps 3 and
4 quite a bit, just because there are mana vials on the way, and the jump takes
very little extra time.
Congratulations, if you have followed this guide through all 40 pages, you are
done with all the really hard challenges of the game. There are still 2
trials, but they are walks in the park compared to the ones you've already
done. Let's finish this!
TRAIN RUNNER: Haha, after Bonfires, you'll do Normal Mode in about 3 minutes.
Expert mode might take an hour or so. You have to get to the end as quickly as
possible. My time was 32.90 seconds after 4 runs, which was good enough for
31,369. If you get this time, you'll get the Assassin vs. Machine trophy, and
your 3 stars. Double jump onto the first platform, then run forward and a
little right under the next one. One of the tricky parts is ahead. You need
to double jump and blink right over the purplish obstacle in front of you. If
you do this without slowing down, your next blink will be onto the wooden
ramp, then run up the stairs and jump up the wall at the end. From here, you
can actually get on the train. Crouch down as soon as you can, because
there's an overhang coming up. As soon as you're past it, blink to the front
of the train, wait till it's almost at the end, then blink ahead, crouch under
the wall, and blink to the finish. That's it for Normal Mode.
Expert Mode, of course, is a little more difficult. As you would expect by
now, the little differences make a big difference in score. The first thing
you'll notice is that you only have enough mana for one blink. It will refill
after a while, but one blink at a time just isn't going to cut it for this one.
As far as I know, there are no mana vials in this level. There is, however, a
glitch. When you first start, turn right, jump up, and blink into the void.
As soon as the screen turns grey, hit start and restart your game. Don't just
let the game restart: you have to do it manually. If you do this correctly,
your next game will start with double the mana. Yay, glitches! Now that you
know how to do this, let's try to get through the challenge. Sprint, double
jump, and blink across the platform to the two pipes in front of you. Keep
running around them to the right, then line up with the spinning wheel above
the purplish light. Be patient on jumping: the longer you wait, the longer
your mana recharges. I try to go at the last little cross piece in the floor
before the obstacle, but I always get excited and go a little early. That's
ok, just make sure you jump and blink through the hole in the wheel. 50 or
so tries should get you through this part without slowing down at all.
Now just run and jump through the conveniently placed hole in the second wheel
and keep going. Get your blink ready, keep sprinting forward, and blink to the
steps as soon as the assassin blinks. If you do this before he blinks, he will
follow you and hit you with a dart at the most critical moment in the run. We
certainly don't want that. Now bear to the right on the steps so you don't get
hung up on the big valve, and jump up the wall. Now stop and get ready for the
reason it will take you at least an hour: jumping on the train.
If you're really fast and use your extra blink, you are now ahead of the train,
but not by much. If you want 30,000 points, it is absolutely necessary that
you jump up to the lead car in the train. The only way to move up the train
while it's moving is to blink, and you can't afford to use it for this move.
So, pan left about 45 degrees and up about 30, and you'll see... nothing!
Don't worry, the train will be there when you are if you execute this
correctly. Jump and blink to a spot in the air, and if you're lucky, you'll
land right on the first car. If you're unlucky, a number of things may
happen, and they're all bad. I'm sure you'll know what I mean after you play
a few times. This jump is what will take at least an hour to get consistently
right, at least if you're bad at this game like I am.
All is not over, however, when you get to the lead car. You now will notice
that there is a wall of light in your path. The oil tank is to the left of the
train, so you'll have to switch to your revolver and shoot it. As soon as you
do, duck! The overhang will knock you back if you don't. Now, sprint forward
to the very front of the car, use your last blink to jump up to the platform
where the assassin's are. Hopefully, they won't mess you up too bad, and your
mana will recharge just before the finish, so use one more blink if you can.
You're probably mashing the R1 button by now, anyway.
Sadly, even this wasn't good enough, for I got 7 scores that were over 29,500
before I finally cracked 30,000. My winning time, finally, ended up being
about 33.87 seconds, and I couldn't figure out how my time was so high the
first seven runs. It finally occurred to me that I was losing time while
switching powers! You see, the game slows way down while you're picking a
weapon, but the challenge timer keeps right on ticking. Hit L2 sometime and
look up in the top right corner. There's the clock, just going right along!
Moral of the story: when you switch from blink to revolver, do it quickly.
There's still one more thing to do before Train Runner is gone forever: get
Emily's doll. As you're approaching the steps to jump to the wall from which
you catch the train, you'll notice a bright purple room on your right. Get in
there, and you'll see a floating table in the corner. The doll is on top of
the table. Okay, that's it for Train Runner: one more, and we're on to the
next DLC!
Welcome to our 10th and final challenge of the Dunwall City Trials DLC! If
you've played this long enough to get everything up until now, I'm sure you're
anxious for this to be over. It's actually kind of disappointing, as this
challenge turns out to be everything the other 9 are not: everybody is in the
same place every time! There's no random, so you can actually learn from your
mistakes on each run! Woohoo! The basic idea is that you have to jump down
and drop assassinate as many people as fast as you can, ending with a lady at
a party. It's all irrelevant, which we'll get to in a minute.
First off, get Emily's Doll. If you have the other 9, you'll finally get the
Mrs. Pilsen's Remorse trophy! If you follow the path of people, the doll is
right before your final kill. As you're standing up there, you'll see some
broken railroad tracks. Off to your left is a train car on an island with
some lanterns in it. The doll is in there, but be careful getting into it
lest you fall. Now that that's out of the way, three things remain: 3 stars
in Normal, 3 stars in Expert, and the Long Way Down Trophy. All three of
these can be accomplished the same way, so let's get to it.
You would think that a 3 star run would involve a bunch of kills. It doesn't.
You will be killing exactly 3 people for this challenge. I was looking for
videos to help with this one, and all of the routes are exactly the same in
every video I saw. So, before we get into it, let me credit Jason W, Marcus
Fitzsimons, and John from IGN for making these videos. I don't know who
originally figured out the route, but it has turned out to be a tremendous
help.
Start by walking to the edge and looking a little left for the yellow beam.
That's your first target. If you double jump and blink straight ahead, you
should get him pretty easily. The nice part about this level is that it's
great for practice: if you miss, just jump into the void and you'll start
wherever your last kill was. So, get this guy first, and you'll have a score
around 800. Now, blink across the hole right in front of you. There should
be an upside down wooden boat floating ahead. That's your next target. This
will take some practice, mostly because the rocks keep going and you need to
run farther out than you think. Trust me, though, it can be done consistently
once you practice. Now turn right towards the back of the boat, and you should
see a red beam off in the distance. Jump out and blink, and then look down.
This will be your next assassination, though you probably will have to back up
a bit on your way down. For killing him, you'll bring your score up to 8,000
or so. Now for the final target. Start by sprinting over to the right,
jumping, aiming for the bright green patch below you, and blinking over there.
When you land, you'll see some rocks sticking out to your left. Run to the
end of those and there will be a busted up building, so blink over to the top
of that. On the other side of the near wall is a little wooden platform that
you can stand on, and a red beam will be out there off the end of it. This is
your final target. If you jump and blink, you'll have to move forward while
you're falling, but by this time I think you have it. Just remember to hit R1
at the right time so you assassinate her and don't just fall on her. In one
of my practice runs, I fell in the void a bunch, got 2:10.80 for time, and my
score was around 27,000. With this method, there are plenty of extra points,
so don't get too worried about it. I actually missed the first guy, ran
50.75 seconds, and ended up with 30,090.
Expert mode is barely harder than normal mode. You get additional obstacles,
which actually makes jumping to the boat easier, and you will take damage
from falls (but not drop assassinations). That means that if you miss, you
die. I actually suck at the first kill, so I chose to kill guys 1, 2 and 3
for this run. They were easier to get, and I only lost 200 points or so.
Anyway, the lines are the same. My 3 star run was in 57.25 seconds, had
100% health, 96% mana, and got me a whopping 30,057 points. Good enough,
time to move on to the next game.
Well, thanks for reading the whole guide. It's certainly not my favorite DLC
ever, as you could probably tell by the commentary, but there are some bright
spots that make the game worth playing. The biggest is the sense of pride from
mastering a truly obnoxious set of challenges: the whole game itself was fun
overall, so I guess it's worth it. I did have quite a bit of help with these
challenges, mostly from various YouTube videos and trophy guides. A huge thank
you to everyone who has taken the time to post these for the benefit of other
gamers. Specifically, Coopafication has posted videos for just about every
Dishonored segment, including both DLCs. Stay beautiful, Coopa!
One other thank you goes to my wife, Miriam for putting up with my anger and
not hating me, even when we had to delay our trip to Florida a few hours so I
could finish Bonfires :P. I love you very much, and thanks for being there
through all the rage.
Let's talk about contacting me for a minute: this is somewhere around the
10th guide I've written for gamefaqs, and I have never before posted my email
address. This one, however, is going to be the exception. There are two
reasons that I'm going to break my silence. First, the guide is good, but I
don't think it's really good enough to get an average gamer through these
trials easily. I still posted it because there isn't a guide at all for this,
and I figure something is better than nothing. The second reason is that I'll
be attempting a 100% speed run in the future, trying to get the record time for
all 81 trophies. I have tried this before, and managed to get 79 of the 81 in
a little over 2 days. Unfortunately, I got stuck on BY My Hand Alone, and had
to give up in frustration. If anyone has an actual method for getting this
trophy or the Daredevil one, I want to hear from you. I'll credit you and put
any tips you have in the guide. My email address is jduecker0609 (at) gmail
(dot) com. I care a great deal about my privacy, however, so if you want to
contact me there will be rules.
First off, I'm not going to help anyone with anything that's not already
written above. If you're having trouble with one of the challenges, you're on
your own, and I will not reply to emails along these lines. Second, I
appreciate any tips that come my way, but I will not be editing the guide and
posting them unless they are a major improvement over what I already wrote.
Don't be offended if you email me and don't hear anything: I've sent exactly
17 emails in 2014 (it's June 17th right now), so I probably won't reply to you
unless what you have is really, really good. I'm not a mean guy, but I work a
lot in a busy restaurant where I have to be nice to strangers all day, and I'm
not usually big on communication when I'm not at work. Third, I WILL probably
reply to emails that do the following: offer a reliable method for getting By
My Hand Alone, offer a reliable method for getting Daredevil, point out an
error in the guide that would cause someone to hate me, or offer a way to
calculate and expoit the score for any of the random challenges. Also, I'm
about to start AC Brotherhood, and I've heard that the multiplayer is a bitch
to finish, so if anyone still wants to boost this game I'll probably reply to
that one as well.
Thanks again for reading the guide, and I hope some of this has helped you get
through the game. So long!
