Despite the fact that you're playing the part of Barbie's disembodied partner,
you are in control of her movements. Movement in Detective Barbie is a bit more
complicated than it needs to be for a game like this, but don't worry too much.
To move Barbie around, move the cursor to the edge of the screen in the
direction you want her to walk. For example, if you want her to walk left, move
the cursor to the left side of the screen and hold it there for as long as you
want her to keep going.
To find clues, just click on them. Many clues are hidden inside or behind
things; just revealing them will count as finding the clue. A sound cue will
indicate when you've found it.
To use the magnifying glass, click its icon in the bottom-left. Your cursor
will then be replaced with the magnifying glass. To put the magnifying glass
away, click the hand icon in the bottom-left.
To use the Crime Computer, click its icon in the bottom-right. You can use the
arrows to scroll through all the clues you've found, all the conversations
you've had with suspects, and all the tools you've collected. Click a clue to
hear Barbie and Becky's thoughts on it. Click a conversation to hear its
recording play back. Click the check mark next to a tool, and you will return
to the main game so you can use that tool.

Before I get to talking about the game, I think I need to say a word about the
list of names they have built into the game. I've heard multiple accounts of
female players with pretty regular names, who couldn't find them anywhere on
this list. And yet, absurd (and hopefully made-up) names are littered all over
the place. Unless this game's intended audience is made up of girls named
things like "Fabreeziah", "Lawanzah", "Quiteariah", "Puryficacionn", and
"Fruktuosah", I think they got a bit carried away with these. My all-time
favorite has to be "Qecpfcnh", which Barbie insists is pronounced "Candolyn".
Regardless, you could sit here for hours just sifting though all this horrible
junk and laughing your ass off.
So uh, pick your name and go print out your junior detective badge or whatever,
and we can get to business already.

Barbie and her good friend Becky have just completed a training course at the
Detective Academy. The fall carnival has come to town, and Barbie's boyfriend
Ken in charge of the finances which will be donated to charity. The night
before the carnival opens, Ken volunteers to participate in the magician's
disappearing act. Unfortunately, he disappears for good - along with the
charity money. It's up to Barbie, Becky, and her mysterious partner (you) to
search the carnival for clues that might lead to Ken, the missing money, and
the person responsible for their inopportune departure.
To help with your search, you're equipped with a powerful magnifying glass.
Through its lens you'll be able to see glowing green footprints and handprints
left by a suspect. The magnifying glass is also able to see glowing green auras
around clues you haven't yet clicked on.
Barbie has also brought along a piece of equipmennt called the Crime Computer.
Any clues you find will be kept track of in the Crime Computer, and you can
review them to make sure you're still on the right track. You can also call in
a video chat with Becky, who'll do her best (which isn't always much) to help
identify what the clue is and where it might have come from. The tools you pick
up will also be listed in the Crime Computer, and you can access them here to
use in the main game.
Before I forget to mention (and THIS IS IMPORTANT), the game changes every time
you play! Beyond the first two locations, the clues change every time. Even the
culprit is a mystery. It's very unlikely the trail of clues will lead you to
every location in a single playthrough. With that said, there are a good few
constants between every playthrough, and that's what this walkthrough is going
to focus on. If you need more specific help, see the other sections.

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
The game will start you out in Area 1 of the carnival, in front of the place
where Ken disappeared, the Magic Show. As Barbie does her best to explain what
your goals are, you'll probably notice your first clue, which is sitting in the
garbage can next to Barbie. Give it a click, and use your magnifying glass to
find a trail of footprints leading into the Magic Show theater. Gee, I wonder
where we need to go first?
Inside the theater, you should notice another clue sitting in the seats near
where you walked in. Spooky-looking, huh? For now, get up on stage and walk
past the curtains to get backstage. Here you should be able to find more clues
using your magnifying glass, and they all imply you should go visit somewhere
eerie. Madame Wanda might even be in, and if she is you'll get a chance to
talk with your first suspect. Go back out to the stage and search around with
your magnifying glass until you find a handprint on the wall. Give it a click
and a secret passage opens up behind the painting! Head on in.
Luckily, it brings you to the place the clues have been hinting at; as you can
probably guess, it's the Haunted House. Once again, search around in here to
find clues. In this room all the clues will be hidden inside or under things,
so you'll have to put your magnifying glass to work to find handprints.
At this point in the game, things start getting randomized. The clues found in
the Haunted House could lead pretty much anywhere, so I recommend you leave and
take a little tour of the carnival to get acquainted with where everything is.
You might even meet more of your potential suspects along the way: the carnival
owner Bert Franklin, the mechanic Artie, and Bert's son Jake. That, and with
luck, you'll find where the clues point to, and the trail will go on!
That is, until soon enough...
[BD2-3]-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
T H E C H A R I T Y M O N E Y
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Your trail will eventually lead you to one of three locations. This can be the
Tunnel of Love, the Bumper Cars, or the Crazy Slide. When you approach, you'll
see a shadowy figure cloaked in a black trenchcoat and hat, and now's your time
to give chase!
Once you get on the ride, a minigame will start in which you'll be chasing down
your mysterious suspect. See section [BD6-2] for more information on the rides
and how to catch your crook on each one. If he manages to get away, you'll have
to follow his footprint trail to a different ride and try again until you win.
Unfortunately, he's too fast for you! Even once you catch up to him, he outruns
poor Barbie as he gets off the ride. However, in his rush he'll drop something
important as he escapes: a golden box containing all the missing money!
Barbie will bring it back to Becky for safekeeping, and she'll congratulate you
on how far you've gotten already. Though she wonders who the suspect might be,
you don't have any leads yet. Barbie is intent on getting back to searching,
and soon you get right back to it.
When you return to the game, there will be a trail of footprints leading you to
your next location, which I've found is usually the Ferris Wheel. After that,
the trail of clues and suspect sightings will continue on for another while.
[BD2-4]-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Once again, eventually you'll track the shady figure back to another of the
three rides I mentioned earlier. Just do as you did earlier and try not to
screw up, and you'll be right behind him yet again.
However, just as you're caught up, Barbie shows another display of her slow
running speed and the suspect gets away again. As he zooms off, he'll drop one
more important clue: a security tape it looks like he stole. Now we're talking.
Head on over to the Security Booth in Area 2 of the carnival, and select the
videotape for use from the Crime Computer. Play it in the VHS, and you'll see a
recording of the culprit locking Ken away somewhere. Pay close attention to the
location you see in the video, because that's where you'll be going.
Ever since you retrieved the charity money, you should have been finding tools
around the carnival in addition to clues. If all went well, you should already
have the tool you need to free Ken from his prison, but if you don't, I suggest
you search around the carnival and look around carefully until you find what
you need. If you're really stumped, I suggest heading over to section [BD-8].
Once you have the tool you need, open it up and free Ken. Barbie will bring him
back to Becky to ask him questions, and he'll tell them everything he knows.
Although the culprit had him blindfolded, he could tell he was being brought
all over the carnival. By some unexplained miracle Ken managed to figure out
where the crook was heading each time, and left clues around so Barbie could
follow them. However, he'd been stashed away for some time now, and couldn't
have been leaving some of the last clues Barbie found. Becky figures that
someone on the inside must have left those last few clues to help the team out
in Ken's stead, but has no ideas on who it could be.

Though both Ken and the charity money are safe and sound, Team Barbie Detective
is not done with their job until the suspect has been brought to justice. With
that in mind, you and Barbie set out one more time to put an end to all this.
There will be no clues from here on, as you can pick up the suspect's trail of
footprints as soon as you return. Follow then back to a ride one last time, and
catch up with the crook to nab him once and for all. Barbie grabs him by the
back of the collar and gives him a nice scolding. You're busted!
Before you know it, the culprit will be unmasked and sitting in the back of a
security car as Barbie and her team members discuss their shock of who it is.
As it turns out, our suspect had the whole thing planned out for their own
selfish purposes. And they would've gotten away with it too, if it wasn't for
you meddling kids.
Your secret insider finally comes out and reveals themself. Barbie thanks them
for being a real friend. But who is it, you wonder? That's for me to know, and
you to find out yourself!
Team Barbie Detective's first big case wraps up with some smiles and a good
laugh, but will you be around for their second mystery? Someone's made off with
the priceless jewels from the Inn at Lighthouse Cove...
But that's for another time, huh?

Predictably, every clue only has one place in the carnival it could be pointing
you to. For example, in real life colored scarves could be part of a magician's
act OR a clown's act, but in this game colored scarves only lead to the first
location, the Magic Show.
This is a list of locations and all the clues that lead there. If you have a
clue and don't know where it's leading you, look for it on the list and go to
the location it's sectioned under.
As a fun fact, the total amount of clues is 50.

The employees of the carnival can be spoken to at certain times, if they're
available. However, trying to talk to them twice in a row only prompts Barbie
to urge the player to go do something else instead. If a clue leads you to the
location where they are, they won't be around, so that you can go inside and
search for clues. All conversations are recorded in the Crime Computer and can
be listened to at any point afterward. Becky will also give commentary on the
person after you play a conversation back.
It's possible to tell whether the person is there or not before you touch the
door. Just look at the door (or inside, in the Clown Tent's case) and see if
the lights are on or off. On means someone's there, and off means it's empty.

The magician for the Magic Show. It was during her trick that Ken
disappeared, but she explains how the trick works and that she has no idea
what happened to him. She acts a bit carefree and defensive, and cares
more about the attention she's getting than Ken's fate. Though she's only
sometimes in her dressing room, she declines helping Barbie because she's
so busy preparing for the big show tomorrow.
She can be found in her dressing room backstage at the Magic Show, but
isn't always around.
Conversation 1
Wanda: Hi there, can I help you?
Barbie: My name's Barbie. We're Team Barbie Detective, and we're looking
for Ken.
Wanda: Nice to meet you, but I can only chat for a sec. I'm REALLY busy.
It's fantastic!
Barbie: What is?
Wanda: All of the excitement. All of the people!
Barbie: What do you mean?
Wanda: All of the people interested in me, and my act.
Barbie: So, you're glad Ken's gone?
Wanda: Well, not glad that he's gone. I didn't mean to make him vanish
permanently, you know.
Barbie: I would really appreciate your help now.
Wanda: Maybe later? I have to get ready for the show tomorrow.
Becky: That magician sure is interested in her act, and how many people
see it. She really doesn't seem to care much about Ken.
Conversation 2
Wanda: Hi there BARBIE, have you found anything out?
Barbie: Well, we would like to ask you a couple of questions.
Wanda: Oh, alright. But I can only chat for a sec.
Barbie: Are you in a rush?
Wanda: Like I told you before, I'm very busy. I've had to change my act
around!
Barbie: So Ken's disappearance is...good for business?
Wanda: Well...yes! But do you think I meant to like, make him disappear
forEVER? If you want, you can check below the stage. After
someone climbs into the "mystical chamber", the platform is like
an elevator that takes you to a waiting room. When I give the
signal, the platform comes back up. I didn't see your friend
again once he stepped into the chamber and I closed the door.
Barbie: So, you mean-
Wanda: Look, Barbie. I have about a thousand things to do for the show.
Can you maybe come back later?
Becky: Do you think she seems concerned about Ken? Seems to me that
she's more interested in getting people to come watch her show.

The owner of the carnival, and apparently also a clown. He seems confident
that Barbie and her team will find Ken, and talks a lot about his dream of
finally having enough money to build a circus. His son Jake also works at
the carnival, in the office. However, being both the owner and an act, he
has more preparations to make than anyone at the carnival, so the most he
can do to help is give a little time to chat.
He can be found in the Clown Tent, but isn't always around.
Conversation 1
Bert: Hi there, young lady. I'm Bert Franklin, I own this carnival. Can
I help you?
Barbie: I'm Barbie from Team Barbie Detective. We're here to ask you
some questions about the magic show.
Bert: That was a real shame, what happened to that boy! He seemed like
a nice guy.
Barbie: He IS a nice guy, Mr. Franklin - and that's why we need to find
him.
Bert: Well I'm sure someone will get that boy back.
Barbie: That's why we've been spreading the word around.
Bert: You sure have. So many people are concerned! With everyone
pitching in, we'll find him in no time.
Barbie: I hope so. Thanks for your time, Mr. Franklin. We've gotta be
on our way now.
Bert: Good luck.
Barbie: We'll be in touch.
Becky: What a greedy guy! He seems so glad of the attention. It's like
he's glad Ken's missing!
Conversation 2
Bert: Hi there, young lady. How's your uh, search going?
Barbie: We're still working on it. Do you have a couple of minutes?
Bert: Sure do. Say, you haven't come across that charity money yet,
have you?
Barbie: No, no one knows where the money is. I'm sure that, when we
find Ken, we'll find the cash.
Bert: Well, I'm sure SOMEONE will get to that money eventually.
Really sure. And we'll get that boy back, too!
Barbie: Your carnival's been getting lots of attention.
Bert: The carnival will be really busy when it opens, which'll be
GREAT for business. Mm...if this keeps up, I'll have enough
money to finally make my circus.
Barbie: Your circus, Mr. Franklin?
Bert: Yeah. Ever since I was a little kid, I've wanted to be a real
clown. Too bad my daddy owned this carnival and not a circus.
...but with the right money, I'll be wearing the floppy shoes!
Barbie: Well actually, we've gotta keep on looking. Thanks for your
time, Mr. Franklin.
Bert: That's right! Get back out there and find that boy. The money
isn't as important as your good friend Ken.
Barbie: We'll be in touch.
Becky: Well, he sure is relaxed about the whole thing. Poor Ken's gone,
and all he can think about is the money he'll make from this.

The mechanic for the carnival, who "fixes what needs to be fixed", in his
own words. He has a strange demeanor and acts a bit secretive, but admits
that he's very familiar with the carnival and its strange happenings. He
also mentions that he knows about multiple shortcuts and secrets around
the carnival, but that he can't tell Barbie because they won't be secrets
anymore. If he can, he replies with a blunt "yup" until Barbie leaves him
alone. He also seems to have a fondness for rabbits.
He can be found in his house in the Junkyard, but isn't always around.

Artie: What're you looking for?
Barbie: My partner and I are trying to figure out what happened to Ken.
I'm Barbie. Have you seen anything strange?
Artie: Sure! See strange things all the time.
Barbie: Do you have any idea where Ken might be, or who he might be
with?
Artie: Nope. I'm just the handyman. I fix what needs to be fixed.
Barbie: So you must know everything about this carnival, right?
Artie: Yup.
Barbie: Really?
Artie: Yup.
Barbie: Uh...okay. We'll let you know if we need to speak with you
again.
Artie: Yup!
Becky: Now that is one unusual person. Doesn't have too much to say,
huh? Kind of like...he's hiding something?
Conversation 2
Artie: You again?
Barbie: You said that you know everything about this carnival, right?
So you must know about hiding places and stuff.
Artie: Yup. I got all kinds o' ways to get around. You know...
Shorcuts? Secret paths? That kind o' thing.
Barbie: Really?
Artie: Yup.
Barbie: Can you tell me where they are?
Artie: If I tell you...won't be a secret anymore, will it? Heheheh,
nobody can make a move without ol' Artie knowin' about it!

nobody notices him, in contrast to the flashy shows.

Jake: Hey! What're you looking for? This is carnival property, you
know.
Barbie: We're from Team Barbie Detective, and we're looking for Ken.
Do you know anything about the case?
Jake: Just that he disappeared during a trick in the magic show.
...it's pretty cool.
Barbie: Cool?
Jake: Yeah, y'know. All the attention my dad's getting.
Barbie: Your dad? You mean you're Bert Franklin's son?
Jake: Sure am. Jake Franklin. My dad runs the show here.
Barbie: So, you wouldn't know anything about Ken, would you?
Jake: Nope, I sure don't. So you don't need to be checking out MY
stuff.
Barbie: You'll tell me or the police if you learn anything. Right?
Jake: Sure...but I'm not involved.
Barbie: Alright. Thanks for your time, Jake.
Jake: No problem. I guess. See you around.
Becky: I get the feeling that Jake doesn't get to spend a lot of time
in the spotlight. "Finding" Ken would sure make him a hero, huh?
Conversation 2
Jake: Hey, what's up? I didn't think I'd be seeing you around here
again.
Barbie: We're still looking for Ken! Have you seen anything?
Jake: No, we're just getting everything ready for tomorrow. Because
of the disappearance, the carnival's been getting TONS of
attention. So's Madame Wanda...but no one seems to notice me.
Barbie: That's a strange way of thinking.
Jake: I mean, I hope the guy's okay and all, but hey. Publicity is
everything. Y'know, you might wanna talk to Artie.
Barbie: Why should I talk to Artie?
Jake: Y'know. He's the handyman. He's always working on something
around here. He knows this place inside and out.
Barbie: Alright. Thanks for your time, Jake.
Jake: Whatever, seeya.

Tools are clicked in a similar way to clues, but instead of taking pictures of
them and leaving them behind, Barbie keeps them for later use. By finding an
acquired tool in the Crime Computer and clicking the check mark, your cursor
will change into that tool, allowing you to use it if you need.
Magic Key (Just called "Key" in-game)
A golden key with a magic wand on the handle. Its purpose is to unlock the
brown box under the stage at the Magic Show, if that's where Ken is.
Clown Key (Just called "Key" in-game)
A silly key with a clown's face on the handle. Its purpose is to unlock
the clown-face cabinet in the Clown Tent, if that's where Ken is.
Crowbar
One of the tools that isn't a key. Its main purpose is to pry open the
large crate in the Junkyard, if that's where Ken is.
However, it does have alternate uses. The large crate in the Haunted House
can also be opened with the Crowbar, but there's only a small chance that
a clue will ever be in there.
The crate in Artie's house can also be opened with this tool, but there's
never a clue inside. The only thing that happens is the revelation of live
rabbits in the crate, which Barbie mentions must be the rabbits for the
magic show that Artie probably keeps as pets.
Padlock Key (Just called "Key" in-game)
A normal key with a padlock symbol on it. Its purpose is to unlock the
ride car sitting in the Junkyard, if that's where Ken is.
Combination
A looseleaf paper scrap numbered "24-42-63". Its purpose is the unlock the
cabinet in the Ticket Office, if that's where Ken is.
Video Tape
A security tape that the suspect had stolen to cover his tracks. It can be
played in the VHS at the Security Booth, and contains a recording of Ken
being locked away somewhere.

There are two types of rides in Detective Barbie: passive rides and active
rides. Passive rides play out like a cutscene and don't require any input from
the player. Carnival music will play on passive rides if the player doesn't
need to be there, but if a clue led there, spy movie-esque vocal music will
play and Barbie will spot the suspect and know where he's heading.
Active rides are like minigames, and are how the player catches the suspect.
It's possible to win or lose them, and losing them will force the player to
follow the crook's footprints to a different active ride to try again. Getting
on a ride when the suspect's not there will still let you play the minigame but
with no target to chase, so the game will continue endlessly until you click
the mouse button.

Rocket Ride
A spinning rocket ride that flies in a loop, turning upside-down. It's
located in Area 2 of the carnival. If a clue points here, it's possible
that you won't have to get on the ride, and instead there will be another
clue somewhere near the ride for you to find.
Parachute Ride
A seat attached to a parachute that flies high up before descending. It's
located in Area 3 of the carnival. If a clue points here, it's possible
that you won't have to get on the ride, and instead there will be another
clue somewhere near the ride for you to find.
Ferris Wheel
I don't really have to describe one of these to you, do I? It's located in
Area 4 of the carnival. If a clue points here, you'll always have to get
on the ride, as there are no possible locations for clues to appear if the
trail leads here.
Carousel
Otherwise known as a roundabout or a merry-go-round. It's located in
Area 4 of the carnival. If a clue points here, it's possible that you
won't have to get on the ride, and instead there will be another clue
somewhere near the ride for you to find.

Tunnel of Love
Hands-down the easiest of the three active rides. Oddly, this carnival's
Tunnel of Love ride consists of a speedboat race on a looping tunnel, with
swan-shaped ramps littered about. Jumping off of these ramps is the main
goal of the game, as it makes you move forward a bit so you can catch up
to the suspect. Landing on another swan ramp as you fall from a jump will
cause you to jump even higher the second time, giving you an extra boost.
Sometimes, the crook will play it smart by trying to ride over every ramp,
but as long as you don't miss any, you'll catch up to him eventually.
Bumper Cars
Since the carnival isn't open, it'll just be you and your black-clad
suspect on the ride. However, this also means the area will be a minefield
of empty bumper cars, which you'll have to be careful not to bump into.
Your top speed is better than the crook's, so if you're careful not to
knock into anything, you'll catch up with him quickly. The suspect might
also hit bumper cars, slowing him down and letting you catch up with ease.
However, if you hit just a few, your target will zoom off the screen and
you might as well call it quits.
Crazy Slide
Truly, someone would have to be a bit insane to build a slide like this.
You manage to get right behind the suspect as he slides down, but every so
often the slide will fork into two paths: left or right. Barbie will pick
which one by where your cursor is, so if the cursor is on the left side of
the screen she'll turn left, and the same for right. You only have a brief
moment to see which direction the suspect's turning, so be prepared to
follow suit or you'll lose him. Sometimes he gets crafty and makes it look
like he'll head one way before jolting the other way, keeping you alert.

Note that it is impossible to find Ken before watching the video tape that the
suspect drops. Even if you have every key and try every location, Ken will be
in none of them until you watch the footage of where he's been hidden away.
Magician's Box
Located under the stage at the Magic Show.
You'll need the Magic Key to open it.
"Check it out! That's our suspect - and he's stashed Ken in a trunk
somewhere! Let's move, we gotta save Ken!"
Clown Cabinet
Located in the Clown Tent.
You'll need the Clown Key to open it.
"Look at that...it's our suspect! *gasp*, and there's Ken! Can you make
out where he is? Does that look like a dressing room to you?"
Junkyard Crate
Located in the Junkyard, to the right.
You'll need the Crowbar to open it.
"It's the suspect! And he's put Ken in a crate! And look at all the junk
lying around. We've gotta find him, and get him out of there! Come on,
let's go."
Ride Car
Located in the Junkyard, to the left.
You'll need the Padlock Key to open it.
"Our suspect! And look, it's Ken! He's been stashed in...well, it looks
like part of a ride?"
Office Cabinet
Located in the Ticket Office.
You'll need the Combination to open it.
"I don't believe it! Our suspect, and he's put Ken in a big cabinet
somewhere! It's up to us to find the cabinet, and set Ken free!"

Thanks for reading this guide. I packed it with any and all information that I
thought would help someone who's stuck on this game...so hopefully after all
that, you found what you were looking for! Good luck on your playthrough, and
remember: the game changes every time you play. Why not try it a second time to
see what changes? You'll probably see new clues and locations that you didn't
the first time!
If you liked Detective Barbie in the Case of the Carnival Caper, you should try
the sequel as well. Detective Barbie 2: The Vacation Mystery features much of
the same gameplay, and while I do consider it to be not quite as fun as the
first, I'd say it's still worth a go.
Regardless of what you choose to do, thank you and good luck!
