Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons is a fantastic video game! It is unique,
and it may take a little time to get accustomed to the way the game works.
"Brothers" is not your typical run-and-gun action game, and I would say that
it most closely resembles the PlayStation 2 classic "Ico" in terms of
gameplay and story.
In "Brothers," the biggest novelty is that you have control of both brothers
at the same time. The left stick controls the bigger brother while the right
stick controls the younger brother. If you are on a PC, WASD controls the
older brother and the arrow keys control the younger brother. I recommend
that you change the younger brother from the arrow keys to the numpad (8456)
if you are on PC. Or, just use a PS3 or Xbox 360 controller. While the game
can still be completed with the original keyboard setup, it can be quite
tedious and make your hands hurt.
The major novelty is that you must have the coordination to control both
brothers. At first, this can be quite confusing, as you can accidentally be
moving a brother that you aren't focused on. You should try to keep both
brothers as close to each other as possible at all times; this will make it
easier to focus on both of them. You should also position the brothers so
that the older brother is on the left and the younger brother is on the
right. That way, the two brothers correspond with your controller setup.
You will almost always need to complete tasks together. The older brother is
our resident strongest-man and thus takes on the heavy stuff like big levers.
The younger brother is smaller and so can do things like slide between bars.
Perhaps the best example of their differences: the older brother hoists the
younger brother up a wall. See, that's teamwork!
If you get stuck, it is best to look around the area for objects that you can
interact with. You almost never need to backtrack in this game, so do not
think that the solution is going back to a previous area. Both brothers also
point in the direction of where you need to go. Finally, if you sit on the
benches scattered throughout the game, the camera will pan to the next
destination.
Death is not as much of an issue as in other video games. Most of the time
you will be exploring areas with no enemies. The few enemies that you
encounter will make their presence known beforehand. These enemies just need
to get within melee range of one of the brothers to end the game. You will
restart to the previous checkpoint if this happens, and checkpoints are
plentiful in the game.
Falling off cliffs is a much more common way to die. At first, it is
difficult to remember that you must hold the action button when you are
hanging in the air. This is made even more difficult by the fact that you
must control both brothers' action buttons. For practice, glue your hands to
the action buttons at all times. ^_^
And that's about it. "Brothers" is very unique in its two-player approach.
The characters also do not speak any discernable language, so you need to
figure out what they're saying by tone of voice and expressions. This is
actually easy to do, as the gibberish voices are well-done (ha!) and the
story is spellbinding.

3. Walkthrough
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
=============================================================================
This section contains a complete beginning-to-end walkthrough for
"Brothers." The achievements are also included in the walkthrough because
they are (refreshingly) not obvious to obtain. Even the achievement titles
and descriptions are almost riddles that you need to solve in and of
themselves. Even so, all of the achievements are just a little off the beaten
path, and they make good landmark points to make sure you're at the right
place.
Neither main character is given a name, so I will refer to them as "Big
Brother" and "Little Brother" throughout the walkthrough. These are the same
labels given in the "How to play" controls menu of the game. I have
capitalized the names so you can read the text more easily.
This walkthrough is broken up by chapter. You can figure out which chapter
that you're on at the title screen. You can also choose a chapter at the
title screen. Each of these subsections opens up with a little background
information to help you figure out where you're at in the story compared to
the walkthrough.
=============================================================================
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
3.1 - Prologue
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
=============================================================================
The game begins with sad cutscene of Little Brother mourning the loss of his
mother at her grave. After the flashback sequence of the boat, the game turns
back to present time. It seems that now father is very sick, and so Big
Brother waves for Little Brother to help him cart their father to a doctor.
This is your first experience with the unique system of "Brothers." You must
cart your father while controlling both Big Brother and Little Brother.
First, press and hold the interact button to pick up the cart. The left/right
triggers (PS3/Xbox/Gamepad) or Spacebar/Ctrl (Keyboard) are the interact
buttons. The left trigger (spacebar) is the interact button for Big Brother,
while the right trigger (ctrl key) is the interact button for Little Brother.
You must *hold down* the interact buttons to cart the father. While you are
holding down both buttons, you must use both joysticks (WASD/arrow keys) to
move the cart. If you try to use just one brother to move, you won't go
anywhere. You must use both Big Brother and Little Brother controls to move
around the cart. Now cart the father down the hill and stop at the wooden
bridge with the platform and the lever.
Before you continue, you should get the first achievement of the game. Stop
interacting with the cart so both brothers are free to move, then descend the
stone steps near the bridge to reach a small beach. Follow the beach to the
far side to find a pile of small stones. Interact with the stones as Little
Brother to skip the stones and receive your first achievement, "Take a
Break."
Head back to the bridge with both brothers. As Big Brother, pull the large
lever on the side of the platform. (If you try to interact with the lever as
Little Brother, he won't be able to pull it down.) Pulling the lever will
move the wooden platform to the other side of the chasm.
Cart the father off the platform onto the small dirt path that leads to
another wooden platform. Drop him off on the platform and head down the stone
steps to the right. You will see a small, broken rope ladder on the cliff, as
well as a real rope on top to the right.
Walk under the broken rope ladder as Big Brother and hold down the interact
button. This will position Big Brother in a way so he can hoist up Little
Brother. While you are in this position, move Little Brother over to Big
Brother and press Little Brother's interact button so he gets pushed up.
Now that you're up the small cliff, head over to the rope as Little Brother
and drop the rope down. Walk over to the rope as Big Brother and climb up to
reach the top with Little Brother. With both brothers now up the hill, walk
over to the dual-lever barrel next to the platform.
Position yourself so both brothers have a lever, then hold onto the interact
button so they both grab ahold of the levers. From here, you need to rotate
your joystick with *both brothers* (or move around WASD/arrow keys) to move
the levers. When you move the levers, you slowly raise the platform with your
father on it. You can raise the platform faster if you get in a good rotation
rhythm.
When the platform reaches the top, walk over to the cart and move it with
both brothers to the doctor's house. You will then have a cutscene with the
doctor, the father, and the brothers. This sets off the entire adventure: you
must get the cure for your father.
Leave the doctor's house to go back outside. Walk down the slope to the side
of the house and you will reach a small bridge. Here, there is a man who
blocks you from crossing the bridge. I will refer to him as the "Bully,"
since that's what he is basically doing.
You must find a way to get to the other side of the land without crossing the
bridge. You will find a small, stone slope just south of the bridge. Slide
down the slope to reach a small beach. You will then have a cutscene in which
Little Brother expresses his fears for water. (His mother died in the water
while he was in a boat at the beginning of the game.)
Big Brother assures him that everything will be fine, and then the twosome
enter the water. You must hold down Little Brother's interact button so
Little Brother latches onto Big Brother. While Little Brother is on Big
Brother, you can swim through the water with Big Brother's controls. Remember
that you *must* hold onto Little Brother's interact button so he stays on Big
Brother. If you let go of the interact button, Little Brother lets go of Big
Brother and starts to struggle in the water.
Swim through the water while going under the bridge. You will find a small
beach on the right side; head back on the land there and you will see some
dark vines on a cliff. Climb up the vines to reach the top as both brothers.
To climb, you must hold onto the interact button while pressing up.
When both brothers are up, the Bully runs to the town door and locks it on
you. What a terribly mean Bully; you can interact with the door to bang on
it, but no one comes to your aide. All in all, you now must find a new way
into the town.
To the right of the doors you will find a small cliff with even smaller green
levels of rock. You can hold onto the rock with the interact button and jump
up to the next rock by releasing the interact button. When you reach the
level with the next green rock, you must hold onto the interact button again.
This is because you will just fall down to the ground if you are not holding
it.
There are two sets of green rock levels, which means that you can scale the
cliff with both brothers at the same time. You can use this as good practice,
but note that you can just go up with one brother and then move up with the
other brother afterward. This makes it much easier as you only need to
control one brother at a time.
At the top, walk north and jump across the small chasm to the other side.
Climb up the two levels of terrain to reach the wall. If you look closely,
you will see that a plank of wood is nailed across the top of the wall. You
can grab onto this wood; while you are holding onto it, you can sidle left to
reach the rooftop of a house. You need to do this with both brothers, and as
before, you don't need to do it at the same time.
You will slide down the small roof and into the town proper. Walk over to the
man sleeping on the bench and the game prompts you to use your camera
buttons. Afterward, you will see two men arguing below near a well. They are
of no concern to you, however.
To the right of your current position, you will find large, circular tan
barrels with flat tops. Climb on top of these with both brothers and drop
down into the yard with the rope-ladder. Head over to the rope-ladder and
hold the interact button to latch onto it. Press up while holding the
interact button to climb up to the wooden platform. Repeat this process for
the other brother so that they are both up on the platform.
Follow this small wooden platform to reach a catwalk on top of a rooftop. You
will need to high-wire across this catwalk as both brothers. While you are
slowly walking across, you will see the Bully run around below, probably
positioning himself to the next point of annoyance.
After crossing the catwalk, slide down the rooftop to reach a small yard with
a gate. There is then a cutscene in which the Bully holds the gate close so
you cannot go through. Thankfully, you can finally teach this Bully a lesson.
See the black bars near the caged animals in the adjacent lot? You can go
between them as Little Brother. In the side with the cages animals, walk to
the northern end and have Little Brother turn the lever.
This will release a small dog, who runs after a terrified Bully. Now that the
Bully has been neutralized by a small household pet, you finally don't have
to deal with his annoyances. Walk into the town circle to reach a well. North
of the well, you will find the scared Bully across a fence. He is up on some
barrels and positively terrified of the small dog. If you want, you can laugh
at him with both brothers by pressing the interact button. I know I did. ^_^
To the left of the Bully and the dog, you will find a stone path. Follow this
linear path as you cross a small bridge. Continue following the linear path
to reach another bridge (closed) with a man sleeping on a chair next to it.
As Little Brother, interact with the sleeping man. Little Brother grabs the
water bucket under the man's chair and throws the water on him, effectively
waking him up.
With Big Brother, interact with the man so Big Brother shows him the map. The
now-awake man is happy to pull the lever and drop the bridge for you. Cross
the bridge to reach a small cutscene and the end of the long prologue.
=============================================================================
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
3.2 - Chapter 1
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
=============================================================================
You will be on a dirt path at the beginning of Chapter 1. To the right, you
should see a small yard with a stone water well in the middle. In front of
you, you will see an old lady on a chair and a small girl playing with her
ball past her. To receive the "Wishing Well" achievement, you must grab the
ball from the little girl and toss it in the well.
The little girl gives you a small window to grab the ball when she bounces it
against the wall. As Big Brother, just run up and hold the interact button to
pick up the boy. Walk back over to the well, which is a bit south of your
current position, and release the interact button near the well to throw it
in. Note that the little girl puts up her hands for the ball back and even
sadly starts to cry when you put it in the well. This is one of the sadder,
more sadistic achievements, but an achievement nonetheless.
After getting the achievement, make your way down the road. You can go on the
stone steps for a small shortcut across the dirt path, but it is not that
much of a time difference. Soon you will reach a closed gate next to a small
house where a man is gardening.
You can easily push this gate open. See the pair of horizontal white handles
on the gate? Position both brothers next to them and hold their interact
buttons to grab ahold of the gate. From here, move both brothers forward to
open the gate.
Past the gate, follow the dirt path across the small to a guy drinking away
on a cart. There is a small path to the right of him; go down it and past the
small pond. You will reach farmland, complete with a barking dog who tries to
get you off the property.
You are safe in the elevated levels, but if you drop down to the ground with
the dog, he might bite you and end the game. Basically, you need to dodge the
dog as you go across the farm. If you end up getting bit, you'll just restart
at the beginning of the farm, so don't feel like you'll lose a ton of time if
you accidentally mess up.
Getting through the area with the dog is actually really easy because we
control two characters. Right now, the dog should be down in the center
between the brothers, and the two brothers should be positioned on the end of
the land.
Jump down with Little Brother and run to the three haystacks in front of you.
You can climb onto the surface of them, and the dog won't be able to get you
from there. When you get on them, the dog runs after you and starts to bark
at you from the ground near the hay.
This is your chance to move Big Brother: drop down with him and run over to
the land with the rocks in the left part of the area. When you jump back up
onto high ground, the dog may or may not refocus on Big Brother. Depending on
which Brother he is currently focused on, control the *other* Brother and run
over to the next higher ground. For Big Brother, it's another elevated piece
of land, while for Little Brother, it's another trio of haystacks.
Note that the dog can get hung up beyond a haystack, which makes it even
easier to advance. You basically need to move each brother to the next
position one at a time. As you move them, the dog will refocus his attention
and allow you to move the other brother.
It is fairly straightforward, and when the haystacks become tan barrels, you
are almost there. For the last part, run over to the land as one brother and
move over to the far side. This way, the dog moves all the way over to one
side, which allows you to easily move the other brother onto the land without
worrying about the dog attacking you.
Now that you've finished juking the dog, follow the path north and slide down
the stone slope. Go across the river with the little waterfall (Little
Brother doesn't get scared) and you will reach some black vines. Grab ahold
of the vines and climb up to reach the top. There is room for both brothers
to climb at the same time if you're feeling particularly adept at controlling
them both.
At the top, jump on the three land platforms to get across the river. Both
Brothers automatically jump if you are near the ledge, so this is actually
very easy and you should even have little trouble with them jumping at the
same time.
On the other side of the river, you will see another broken ladder with a
rope next to it. This is the exact same thing you encountered at the
beginning of the game when you were carting your father to the doctor. The
same solution also applies here. As Big Brother, hold the interact button
under the broken ladder and then position Little Brother so he gets hoisted
up. When he's up top, drop down the rope so that Big Brother can climb up.
Once both brothers are at the top, you will encounter another familiar sight:
a small wall with green rock levels jutting out. Just as before, you must
hold onto the lower rocks and jump up to the higher rocks until you reach the
top. Also just as before, the game has supplied two sets of rocks, so you can
do this with both brothers at the same time if you wish.
At the top of the wall, follow the linear path northward and you will see a
group of bunnies in the level below you. You need to get to that area for the
next achievement, so drop down to the right and run down to the bunny area.
In the bunny area, you will see all black bunnies and just one white bunny.
You will also see a coal pit in the center of the area.
I know what you're thinking, and yes, you are correct. As Little Brother,
grab the white bunny and drop him into the coal. You will receive the
achievement "Bunny Buddies" for your effort. The next achievement also
requires this coal pit, so don't forget where it is located.
Head back up the slope and go over to the small drawbridge that is currently
up in the air. There is also a wheel next to the drawbridge; you need to use
this to put down the bridge. *First, though, open the bird cage north of the
bridge, next to the bench. This is the first part of the "Love Birds"
achievement and according to Steam the most missed achievement in the game.*
Back at the bridge with the wheel we have another steam achievement to
obtain. This one, "Black Sheep," is made clear by the sheep across the closed
bridge. As you might have guessed, you need to grab one of the sheep and put
them in the coal-pit back at the bunny area.
First, you need to get the bridge down. As Little Brother, jump on to the
hamster wheel next to the bridge and walk on it to move it. As you move the
wheel, the bridge also lowers. You need to *keep walking* because it will go
back up if you stop. Therefore, you need to hold down on Little Brother's
movement stick for the whole time as Big Brother crosses the bridge.
While running on the wheel with Little Brother, use Big Brother to cross the
bridge and grab a sheep. These sheep are heavy, so it will take a little bit
to carry it back over the bridge. Just remember to keep the Little Brother
moving so he does not close the bridge. When Big Brother reaches the other
side, you can get off the wheel as Little Brother.
Now it's simply a matter of carrying the sheep all the way over to the coal
pit with the bunnies. Although it is close to your current location, Big
Brother walks rather slowly because of the weight of the sheep. When you get
to the coal pit, drop the sheep in it to obtain the achievement "Black
Sheep."
After you get the achievement, head back to the bridge and the wheel.
Unfortunately, you need to basically repeat half of what you just did to
obtain the achievement. As Little Brother, keep the wheel moving to lower the
bridge. Run over to the sheep pen as Big Brother, grab a sheep, and walk back
across the bridge. Get Little Brother off the wheel, then throw the sheep
onto the wheel. The sheep will act as a hamster and keep moving the wheel,
thereby allowing the bridge to stay down without Little Brother being a lab
rat.
Cross the bridge with both brothers and climb up the small level at the far
side of the sheep pen. Follow the linear path to a stone slope. After sliding
down, walk north another hill. You will see a small level in front of you
that you can jump up onto. From here, jump up to the next level to the right.
You will then encounter what appears to be a dead end. There is actually a
small ledge that goes around the mountain. It even has green grass on it.
Sidle across the green ledge to the other side. You will see the farmland
with the dog below, but he can't pester you from up here.
After sidling across, you will encounter another melancholic event: a big
troll crying his eyes out on a chair. In this cutscene, the troll agrees to
help the brothers get to their destination. What a nice guy! I wish we could
repay him right now...
Follow the troll to the ledge. He will stick out his arm, indicating that he
wants you to get near him. Run over to him as Big Brother and the troll will
throw Big Brother up to higher ground. Repeat this process as Little Brother.
You can sit on the stone bench here if you want.
The troll climbs up to your level and again puts out his hand. This time, he
will put you up in the air near a wood ledge. You need to grab onto the wood
ledge with the interact button and *keep it held down*. Sidle over to the
left a little to allow the other brother to get on the ledge.
With both brothers hanging from the ledge, make your way left to the
cliffside. When you reach the open area, climb up and back onto land.
Remember to *hold down the interact button at all times*. If you let go, a
brother will fall and you will need to restart.
Head down the hillside and over to the troll. The troll jumps down in the
chasm and extends his arms to effectively make a bridge that you can cross.
Walk over his arms and his back to reach the next area. Here, the troll
points up the mountain at the dark vines and starts to climb up himself.
He's telling you to climb the dark vines, so climb up the two small plateaus
to reach the dark vines and then grab ahold of them with both brothers. Climb
up the mountain and then the dark vines stop abruptly. At the very top of the
vines, you can jump up to the small stone ledge. Remember to *hold onto the
ledge* or you will fall and need to restart.
After both brothers are hanging from the ledge, make your way to the left.
You will effectively use the troll's arms and back as a ledge, so just go
across while holding both interact buttons. When you reach the opening in the
hilltop, climb up to reach real land again.
Walk over to the far ide of this hilltop and wait for the troll to make his
way over to you. He will stop at the ledge and stick out his arm again. Walk
over to his arm as Big Brother and the troll will throw him to the far
plateau with the dark vines. Repeat this process with Little Brother so they
are both together again.
Climb up to the top of the dark vines and jump up to the ledge. Make your way
to the left while hanging on the ledge and you will reach a small rectangle
of land. Get up on it and repeat the process with the other brother if you
did not do both at the same time.
Go to the opposite end of this small piece of land and you will see another
ledge above. Grab onto it and make your way left yet again. When you reach an
opening above you, climb up to get back on real land again. Head down the
linear path to the troll at the end. He sticks out both of his hands this
time; position both brothers next to him and he will grab both of them before
he jumps down into the cave.
Down here, you will see water in front of you. We know that's Little
Brother's kryptonite, so get into the water as Big Brother before you latch
onto him with Little Brother. Swim across the water and return to land via
the small beach shore to the north. Back on land, head west to reach the
troll, who is next to a small hole. Head over to the hole to reach another
cutscene and the end of Chapter 1.
=============================================================================
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
3.3 - Chapter 2
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
=============================================================================
The setting of this chapter is a big cave with old machinery and a bunch of
trolls. To begin, hop down to the ground and follow the linear path to a
gate. Big Brother cannot get through the bars, so go between them as Little
Brother and turn the lever to open the gate for Big Brother.
Just like the other levers in the game, you need to make a rotating/circular
motion with Little Brother's controls to lift up the gate. Keep Little
Brother's interact button held down, and keep turning the lever until you get
past the gate as Big Brother. The gate will simply fall back to the ground if
you stop turning it.
With both brothers inside, walk down the stairs to the left and go across the
long, narrow bridge. At the end, you will find a turning waterwheel with
gate-like bars on the side. You must grab on the bars and drop to the stone
level below you to the right.
You should do this with one brother at a time if you are still getting
accustomed to the controls. Remember to keep holding the interact button
throughout the small ride down; the game will automatically drop them off at
the stone level, so you do not need to worry about letting go. Repeat this
process with the other brother so you're both on the stone level below.
From here, head east and jump across the small chasm. Climb up the small
stone levels and jump from one stone platform to the next. Head north to
reach a big bronze gear and a river to your left with a small wheel. Your
goal is to cross this river, but you cannot do so unless you stop the small
wheel fins. To do this, you must stop the big gear to the left.
Ascend the steps that are north of the big gear, and run east through the
small maze-like area with the red tanks. At the other side of this area, you
will find a long pillar just lying on the ground. You need to bring the
pillar to the big gear and cram it in the gear to stop it. This in turn stops
the small wheel in the water and allows you to walk over the river.
The controls are similar to carting the father at the beginning of the game.
You must hold both interact buttons at the same time, and one of the movement
sticks will be inverse because one brother is moving backwards. The pillar is
long, so you will have to reorient yourself multiple times as you make your
way through the small maze.
Think of it like putting furniture into a small house; you need to switch
who's walking backward because the rooms are too small. This is the exact
same premise here. You will need to first haul the pillar north, then south,
then east, and finally down the stairs to the big gear. Walk perpendicular to
the gear and wedge it in the shaft to stop the small wheel in the river.
After crossing the river, follow the path as it goes down two sets of stairs
and leads to a strange track contraption on the ground. You should see a "Y"
shaped track on the ground, with a big lever on the end and two small
stoppers on the ends.
Grab the big lever at the end of the "Y" -- you will need both brothers to
interact with it -- and push it forward. You will stop at the middle of the
"Y" track. Rotate the lever so that it faces the left "Y" branch, and push it
until it hits the stopper at the end.
You will see one part of the path extend as you hit the stopper. To extend
the other side of the bridge, you need to push the lever into the other
branch of the "Y" track. When you do this, you will see the bridge is now
fully extended and you are able to cross it.
Go around and cross the bridge, then hop across the stone platforms to the
north. Follow the linear ground pathway to reach another huge water wheel.
This time, the wheel is going in the opposite direction, and so you can't
just grab onto it and get to the next level.
Instead, you must stop the wheel entirely. To do this, hoist Little Brother
up to the top level -- use the little half-ladder to the right to finish
climbing up. Ascend the steps and hop up on the inclined level with a small
gold platform at the end.
See the chain with the gold hook on it? If you hold on it, the water wheel
stops and you can climb the wheel as Big Brother. Unfortunately, you cannot
just grab it down. Instead, you need to leap from the small gold end of the
platform and grab ahold of the chain. You must hold down the interact button
so the wheel stops. If you let go and fall, the wheel will start to move
again.
Before you jump and grab ahold of the chain, you should get Big Brother in
position. When you are ready, jump and grab the chain. While Little Brother
is holding it down while hanging on it, use the grate of the wheel to climb
up as Big Brother.
With both brothers up top, head east and cross the small bridge. Ignore the
big water fountain with the fish, and instead take the left stairs, which go
upward. At the top, go left and through the small path with rock formations
on each side.
You will reach another one of those lever tracks. As you can see, this lever
track operates the chains to the left, which will move when you push the
lever to the stopper. You do not need to keep pushing the lever into the
stopper after you've started up the chain ropes -- when you start them up,
walk down to them and grab onto them. You can only grab on one with each
brother, so the twosome will be a little spaced out as they ride the chain-
track over to the next platform. Just remember to keep *holding* the interact
button all the way through, or they will fall to their death.
On the next platform, you will see that the chains can go further, but there
is a big black structure in the way that impedes your own progress. You will
also see a half ladder near here; just as before, hoist up Little Brother to
the upper level. Here, you will see a small, white lever on a gold platform.
As Little Brother, rotate the lever. You will see the black structure that
was blocking the chain-track as opened up. This allows Big Brother to take
the chains to the next platform. Remember that you must keep rotating the
lever until Big Brother is all the way through, because the black structure
shuts close when Little Brother stops rotating the lever.
With Big Brother on the next platform, you will see that we have another
black structure that stops him from continuing his chain ride. On the upper
area with Little Brother, you will see another lever on the other side of the
level. Rotate this lever with Little Brother and grab on a chain as Big
Brother to continue.
When Big Brother clears the black structure, you can stop rotating the lever
and instead follow him from the side. You will have to hop a small chasm as
Little Brother, but it's nothing you can't handle. When Big Brother reaches
the next platform, drop down and walk over to the big lever. This operates
the crain-like structure that extends up top to Little Brother.
First, grab on the chain part of the crain as Little Brother. While you are
constantly holding onto the chain, rotate the lever on the ground below as
Big Brother and you will move Little Brother (and the crain chain) over to
the far bridge.
As Little Brother, walk to the opposite end of the broken bridge to find
another level. In front of the lever, you will see another black structure
that impedes the chain-track. You must rotate this lever to open up the black
structure. While you continue to rotate it, grab on a chain with Big Brother
(he's waay back there) and ride it past the black structure.
As Big Brother, jump down on the first available platform. It should be a big
level with another crane in the middle. Note that you can use the shadow of
Big Brother to gauge where he will land. When he's on the level with the
crane, get off and grab ahold of the lever on the base of the crane.
You must *pull* the lever so that it will rotate to Little Brother's
platform. When the chain of the crane is above Little Brother, grab ahold of
it and rotate him to the same level as Big Brother. With both brothers
reunited again, climb up the flat slabs of stone and jump across the chasm.
Continue climbing the levels of stone and you will reach the dark vines.
You know the deal here: climb up the dark vines with both brothers. Up the
vines, you will be facing a wall with little gold handles on it. There will
be two sets of handles, and they will lead to a bronze, rusted beam above
them. These are the "trim" of the area: I guess the trolls really like the
decor.
At any rate, you need to grab onto the gold handles and jump up to the bronze
beam. Afterward, you need to sidle left and jump across the same gap in the
beam. From there, you simply need to sidle left until you reach the ground
again. You need to do this with both brothers, so make sure you are holding
down the interact button at all times and using the interact button of the
appropriate brother. It helps to have Big Brother on the left and Little
Brother on the right for this task, as it better correlates them with your
controller.
On this level, you will see a stone bench with some steps behind them. These
steps lead to another set of gold handles, with a chain-link gold gate above
them. You must grab onto the handles, then jump up to the gold gate, and
finally jump up to the beam above the gate. You must do this with both
brothers, so be sure to have them on the proper sides. (Little Brother on the
right, Big Brother on the left.)
With both brothers hanging from the beam, make your way to the right. At the
end of the beam, you will see a strange structure hanging from the ceiling.
It has kinda backwards "Y" beams on it. You must jump to each of these "Y"
beams and hold onto them. Do this with one brother at a time. The side of the
beam will fall, but it won't kill you unless it spooks you and you let go of
the interact button.
With one brother at the other side and safely on the ground, repeat this
process with the other brother. Again, jump from beam to beam while grabbing
on the top part. With both brothers on the ground again, make your way to the
other side of this small platform.
You will see another rail above and a set of handlebars attached to it. This
time, you just need to hold on the handlebars with both brothers, and you
will automatically speed down the rails. Soon you will fall and end up on a
crumbling bridge. Just keep moving to the right and you should be fine; you
do not need to jump or interact with anything, just move to the right.
After the crumbling bridge, walk down the steps to find a troll in a cage.
This is the wife of the troll that helped you out so much before, and so it
would only be decent of you to let her out of her cage. Considering how much
her husband helped you, I'm sure you were waiting for a chance to repay him.
First, though, you need to unlock the cage. Unfortunately, the key is hanging
from the back of the guard troll, who is beyond the two gates to the north of
the cage. As you know already, Big Brother cannot go between gate bars, and
so Little Brother's gonna have to do it.
After you cram through the first set of bars, walk around the bones and head
to the key. Do not step on the bones! If you do step on them, the guard troll
will be alerted, and he automatically kills Little Brother and ends the game.
Just go slowly and make your way around the bones in the middle.
Hold Little Brother's interact button near the key and he will carefully
pilfer the key from the guard troll. You must HOLD LITTLE BROTHER'S INTERACT
BUTTON to keep the key in your grasp. If you let go, the key will just drop
to the ground.
Walk around the bones and go through the bars to reach Big Brother again.
With the key in hand, head over to the cage and simply walk near the gold
lock to unlock it. Now that the cage is unlocked, head back up to the lever
and pull it with Big Brother. This will open the cage and allow Lady Troll to
exit.
Lady Troll simply walks off; as a result, Little Brother gets a little mad
and starts to shout. This alerts the Troll Guard, who comes stomping through
the gates. When you first have control, run over to the side and go up to the
platform with the lever. In this area, you are safe because the Troll cannot
get up here. In fact, the Troll can't even see you here, and so he merely
wanders around below while hopelessly searching.
As you might have guessed, you need to 'cage this Troll. You can open the
cage with the big lever up here, but Big Brother is the only one that can
pull it. This means that Little Brother will have to act as bait and lure the
Troll into the cage while Big Brother is holding it open with the lever.
First, pull the lever with Big Brother and hold down on that interact button.
You won't be letting for a little while. Hop down to the cage area as Little
Brother. Try to hop down on the side that the Troll is not currently
searching on, as you can die if you get too close to him.
What you need to do is move Little Brother into the cage. Little Brother can
actually go between the bars of the cage, so you might want to practice that
first. Now that Little Brother is in the cage, get the attention of the Troll
and lure it inside. As it charges in, get Little Brother back out of the cage
by sliding through the bars. With the troll in the cage, let go of the lever
(with Big Brother) to close the cage. This effectively traps the Troll; lock
and key be damned.
Right after you trap the guard troll, Lady Troll comes back with a chain rope
to help you out. See, Little Brother, she was just getting some rope! She
sets up the chain rope and waves for you to climb up it. Up to her level,
follow Lady Troll down the walkway.
She will stop on a gold platform and point down at the track controls below.
Her platform moves when you move the lever-track below, so get to work. Push
forward; rotate right; push forward; rotate left; and push forward. This will
move the platform to the broken bridge on the far side.
This part actually confused me for a little bit: how in the heck do *we* get
over the bridge. The answer is actually quite simple: move the lever so that
the platform is between the gap in the bridge. To do this, move the track-
lever all the way to the start position and then move it forward two-clicks.
The platform is now hanging right in the middle of the broken bridge, and you
can easily jump on and past it to reach the other side.
Cross the bridge and go under the gate that Lady Troll opens up. You will
then have a small cutscene in which Lady Troll gets reunited with her husband
(YAY!), but then a big fat ugly boss troll comes to ruin the party (NO!). The
boss troll jumps down, and the two brothers retreat up the side of the area.
As you might notice, there is a small circular trapdoor gate in the center of
the arena. Your goal is to open this trapdoor and make sure the troll goes in
it. Unfortunately, you cannot just lure him right away; there are four chains
that keep the trapdoor gate held up, even under the weight of a troll!
With this in mind, you must break the chains that are holding up the trapdoor
gate. As you can see, they are on four sides of the arena. Basically, you
must get the troll to run into these four chain pillars. The troll has
already broken one of them, so you need to have him break three more.
You must do this with Little Brother because Big Brother is the only one that
can pull the big lever up here. Just completely ignore controlling Big
Brother for now, and drop down to the circular arena as Little Brother. Head
over to one of the chain-pillars and wait for the troll to charge you. The
troll cannot change direction when he charges, so you can easily evade him
and have him hit the chain pillar.
Repeat this process for the last two pillars. Now that all the chains are
gone, the support for the trapdoor is gone. Open the trapdoor gate by pulling
the large lever as Big Brother. This will open up the center. Don't worry,
the troll's so dumb that he will just charge in, even with the thing open and
everything. Merely position Little Brother so that he is on the other side of
the hole, and then watch the troll stupidly charge to him and into your trap.
The troll clutches onto the sides of the hole for dear life. He's still alive
in this position, but he can't do anything to you. Put one brother on each of
the hands, and interact with both of the hands to throw him down the hole. If
you only interact with one side, the troll merely uses the other side to keep
from falling.
With the boss troll out of the way, head over to the Husband and Wife Trolls
and let them pick you up to their level with the exit. The Husband and Wife
hold each other's hands as you exit the cave. Don't you just feel wonderful
for reuniting them? Now, if only we could get that cure for dad. Big Brother
shows them the map, and the two Trolls point in a direction off in the
distance. Run down the path and you will end Chapter 2.

3.4 - Chapter 3
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
=============================================================================
This chapter begins with a cutscene of the father vomitting, then a cool
segue that pans to the stars and back to the brothers. They are sleeping at a
camp; this would be perfectly fine, but there are wolves that are stalking
them from the shadows. Luckily, Big Brother picks up a makeshift torch and
wakes up Little Brother.
You must traverse your way through the woods while fending off the wolves.
They will not jump out at you and attack you, but instead stay in the shadows
and slowly close in on you. Big Brother's torch is the key here: you can
swing it with Big Brother's interact button. If you swing the torch near a
wolf, it will whimper and run off. You need to be fairly close to do this,
though; if you swing the torch while they're still in the shadows, it will
have no effect. Just get fairly close to them - so they are in that circle of
light around you - and swing away at them.
You need to keep Little Brother behind Big Brother at all times. Do not
separate them, and walk very slowly down the dirt path. A few wolves just
stand in the middle of the road; simply creep over to them and swing the
torch to make them run away.
That's about it for this part: keep the brothers close and swing the torch
when the wolves get close. Don't get too close to them, and swing early so
you don't get bit. If you do get bit by them, you will simply restart at the
camp, which is not that far away.
Soon, you will reach a graveyard. Big Brother throws the torch to the ground,
signalling that there must be no threat of wolves anymore. At any rate, there
is an achievement we can acquire in this very graveyard. From the entrance of
the graveyard, take an immediate right turn and walk over to the statue of
the angel.
It is a little off on its own, and it has candles under it. To get the
achievement, you need to interact with the angel statue as Little Brother.
Hold down on the interact button until you see a shooting star fly over the
head of the angel. When that happens, you will get the achievement. It takes
around ten seconds, so just wait patiently while interacting with the statue.
After you have obtained the achievement, make your way through the graveyard
by following the stone path. You will soon reach a locked gate on the other
side of the graveyard. There is a house to the left of the gate; knock on the
door to wake up the man inside.
He will walk out and just stand about. As Big Brother, interact with the man
so he can see the map and you can get directions. The man points off in the
distance, and then he goes over to unlock the gate. Head out and you will
reach a cutscene in which a wolf makes the brothers jump into a river.
As you might have guessed, the first thing you should do is have Little
Brother hold onto Big Brother. Since Little Brother can't swim, this will
keep him from getting traumatized. Furthermore, this makes it easier to steer
in the river, as you only need to steer Big Brother.
The ride down the river is not all that adventurous. I do not think you can </pre><pre id="faqspan-2">
die here, but you should try to move with the river flow. It's not very
difficult, though, and the river almost pushes you in the right direction by
itself.
Soon you will reach a large flat rock with two lights on it. This is where
you need to get off; if you keep going, you'll reach a nasty waterfall. After
getting on the rock, tightrope on the thin tree to the left and follow the
path to a bench.
You can sit down and enjoy the view if you like; you won't get any
achievements or anything, but it does show you that your destination is
downward. At any rate, continue down the linear path as you cut back over to
the waterfall.
There is a light next a tree that extends across the waterfall. As you may
have guessed, the tree branch is your ticket to the other side. Grab onto the
tree branch and make your way to the other side. You should do this one at a
time, and as Big Brother first.
At the end of the tree branch, jump over to the square rock that juts out and
grab on it. Jump to the next rock, and finally to the ground on the left. Now
that Big Brother's gotten across, switch to Little Brother and try to do the
same. When you jump from the tree branch to the first rock, the rock gives
way and Little Brother falls into the water. Big brother -- being totally
awesome -- jumps in after him.
Unfortunately, the river has a rock barrier between it, and so Little Brother
cannot get back to Big Brother. They will both flow down the river, and
Little Brother luckily catches a flat rock while he falls down the next
waterfall.
Grab ahold of the branch that Big Brother points to -- it's also the only
darn thing you can interact with as Little Brother on this platform. Right
after you grab the branch, it immediately starts to break, and soon almost
all of the branch is gone.
Thankfully, Big Brother is here to rescue us again; he grabs onto the top
part of the tree to keep Little Brother from fallings. For this part of the
game, you must hold down the interact buttons for both brothers at all times.
Big Brother's interact button allows him to hold the tree, and Little
Brother's interact button makes him continue grabbing the tree.
On the cliffside, there are several tree stumps with hands poking out. These
will kill Little Brother if he gets too close to them, so you need to
traverse your way around them. The GOAL IS TO GO RIGHT and *NOT* to simply
climb all the way up as Little Brother. If you climb too far up, a tree stump
will inevitably kill you.
You can move the tree left to right with Big Brother. He's up above and using
all his strength to hold onto the tree. While you are moving the tree left,
you should also be moving up and down with Little Brother to avoid the evil
tree stumps. You basically need to stay in the middle almost the whole way
through. Some new tree stumps pop out, so don't let them frighten you into
letting go of the interact buttons.
You will need to go quite a little ways to the left. Soon, you will reach a
cutscene in which a tree stump invariably throws down Little Brother's tree
branch. Big Brother jumps down into the water after him.
For the underwater sequence, you merely need to swim to Little Brother. Swim
downward as Big Brother and make a cut toward him. Hold Big Brother's
interact button to grab Little Brother, and then swim back to the surface. It
should be noted that the game will restart if Little Brother gets all the way
to the water floor, but you should have no problem swimming to him in time.
After the cutscene, walk north as you go up the side of the river. Soon you
will reach a Giant's hand. After the cutscene with the Giant, Big Brother
gets dizzy, and you only have real control over Little Brother. Interact with
the female Giant's face, which will lift her hands from the person under her.
This is none other than the father; interact with the father and you'll reach
another cutscene. This beat'em up and wake'em up cutscene closes out the
third chapter.
=============================================================================
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
3.5 - Chapter 4
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
=============================================================================
After Little Brother coughs up all that water, the twosome show some
brotherly love with a hug and then you have control again. Walk north and
climb the two small rock levels. Continue north and you will see a man off to
the right with a noose around him. Holy...
Yes, he's about to commit suicide by hanging himself. Run down the slope and
get him down! You can use the rope to climb up the tree; when you're up, head
down the branch and untie him. You can use Big Brother to keep him up in the
air while you have Little Brother climb up and untie the rope.
It doesn't seem to help much, though; the man is still crying and extremely
sad. If you look to the left, you can see that his house has burned down.
Even worse, what looks like his family is gone, too; they have burned to
death and are now under a red blanket. Overall, this makes for a very bleak
moment that also has some underlying power.
If you try to interact with the man, he won't really respond to you. This is
all really depressing, but you can get an achievement for helping him out!
Drop down to the right of the tree to reach a small ledge. Sidle across and
grab the bottom portion of the broken house - there is a plank of wood that
you can hold onto.
Make your way to the right, and jump over to the brown piece of wood in the
middle and grab onto it. From here, jump to the right again and grab onto the
floor. Pick yourself up, and repeat the process with the other brother. On
the wood floor, you will find a strange box at the end. Pick it up and go up
the stairs in the house - the blockade is now gone - and run over to the man.
You will then have a powerful cutscene in which the man opens the box and
starts to play music. It's a music box, and it's just what the man needs to
get back his will to live. The three of you bury his family, and then you
receive the achievement.
Now that you've helped the man and gotten the achievement, head back up the
hill and go north until you reach a windmill. There are controls next to the
base of the windmill which control the bridge. Unfortunately, you need to put
up the other side of the bridge first, and so those controls are useful for
now.
As Little Brother, go through the bars and make your way around to the base
of the windmill itself. As you might have guessed, you need to grab on the
blade of the windmill and ride it over to the other side. Use Little
Brother's interact button to cling on the blade, and lean right as it goes
up.
When the blade is parallel with the second windmill's blade, jump over and
hold onto the second windmill. You can also wait until you are a little
higher than the other windmill blade before you jump. Hold on the blade as it
goes down and drops you off.
From here, loop around the windmill base and go through the bars. You will
see a rotate lever on this side. Before you use that, interact with the big
lever on Big Brother's side to pull up half the bridge. Just keep it in this
ascended position (hold the button) and start on Little Brother's side.
Rotate the lever until the bridge juts out the entire way, and then let go of
Big Brother's lever so that the two bridge halves effectively latch together.
After crossing the bridge, follow the linear green path to continue your
journey. Tightrope over the fallen tree to get over the chasm, then jump at
the end of this platform to reach a small area with a ledge. Sidle across the
ledge and you will reach a cutscene in which Big Brother points at the big
tower off in the distance. Yes, that's where we need to go. :)
After the cutscene, head down the slope and over to the goat pen. You need to
open the pen's gate with both brother, but it will stay open after you do
that. (Unlike multiple other times when the thing will just slide back shut
when you interact with them.)
Inside the pen, you are probably thinking that we have to carry a goat some
far distance like we did the sheep earlier in the game. This is actually the
opposite of what we need to do! Interact with a goat and the brother will hop
on it, ready to ride away. Make sure both brothers are riding a horse before
you set out.
Ride back up the slope and cross the chasm to the north. These goats can jump
a long distance! Continue riding on this very linear path. Don't worry about
the jumping and the stones falling; they can't hurt you if you just press
forward. As always, keep those interact buttons held down!
When you reach the end of the ride, there will be a cutscene in which the
brothers say goodbye to the goats and resolve to go further. Head north and
you will reach that strange structure on the side of the mountain. It seems
that the inventor is stuck on a lowered platform with no way back up! He
throws down a gear and points at the lever that controls the platform.
Pick up the gear and head south down the pathway that loops. It doesn't
matter which brother picks up the gear, as they will both be throwing it back
to each other in a minute. Jump the first chasm with the brother who does not
have the gear. Afterward, walk up to the ledge with the gear brother and let
go of the interact button to "throw it" to the other brother.
The first time I did this, I did not know that you could catch the gear. It's
definitely more fun to catch, but please note that the gear won't fall off a
cliff or anything if you don't catch it. Anyway, make your way up to the thin
plank of wood that you need to tightrope across. Do the same thing as before;
send over the gearless brother and throw it to him.
With both brothers now at the controls, stick the gear in the shaft in front
of the lever. It will just pop right in without any fuss. With the gear in
place, have each grab one of the levers that are sticking horizontally out of
a barrel. Rotate the lever to ascend the inventor's platform.
The inventor simply runs off back to his workplace. Follow him and have Big
Brother interact with the inventor so you get permission to use the hang
glider. Sounds like fun, no? But before we tackle that, we have two
achievements to obtain around here. One of them is completely new, and the
other is the second part of the bird cage achievement from Chapter 1.
First, let's do the "Windpipe" achievement. Behind the inventor's deck, you
will find stairs that lead up to -- you guessed it -- a windpipe. It is a
two-control operation, which makes me wonder why the inventor even has it
unless he gets the goats to help him. At any rate, Little Brother is in
charge of the lever on the side, while Big Brother should grab the bar right
below the windpipe inside the circle. Interact with the levers and move them
to make beautiful sound and obtain this achievement.
The other achievement in this area is the second part of the "Love Birds"
achievement. As you make your way down to the hang glider, you will see a
rusty telescope on the railing. Look inside the telescope and move your view
southeast until you see two birds on a branch. Now that you know that you
have reunited these star-crossed lover, you obtain the achievement.
Now, the fun begins: HANG GLIDING! Interact with the hang glider with both
brothers and they will grab onto the bar below it. You need to hold onto both
brothers' interact buttons at all times here! If you let go of one of their
interact buttons, they will fall and you will have to restart. Keep your
hands glued to their interact buttons!
To turn the hang glider, you need to reposition your weight on the 'glider.
You can freely move both brothers to either side of the hang glider during
flight. If you have more weight to the right side, the hang glider will start
to veer right; if you have more weight on the left side, the hang glider
starts to go left.
The difficult part is that you have two bodies to shift around, but if you
put one brother at the very end, the hang glider will invariably veer in that
directions. You don't need to turn very much during this activity, anyway,
and you have ample opportunity to change your direction before you, say, hit
a wall.
Past the cave, a flock of birds flies into your hang glider and puts a bunch
of holes in it! I'm sure the inventor's not happy now! The controls of the
hang glider become a little worse here, but you must simply fly straight to
reach a cutscene. DO NOT try to land yourself by flying into the pillar on
the left. You will simply crash and have to restart this whole thing over
again. Instead, fly straight ahead and wait for the cutscene to trigger.
Thankfully, neither brother is injured when the glider crashes on top of the
small platform. Big Brother points to the vines and metal handles on the
wall, then the two brothers tie themselves together with a rope. You need to
get all of the way up to the top of the tower, and it is primarily through
climbing.
First, climb the vines and have one brother jump up to the metal handles. For
this portion of the game, you must "swing" each brother to the next handle.
To do this, let one brother dangle while the other brother is holding onto
the metal handle. Keep the trigger down for the brother who is holding the
metal handle, or both of you will fall! It should also be noted that Little
Brother can hold Big Brother's weight, so don't worry about their size and
strength difference for this part of the game.
At any rate, while one brother is holding onto the metal handle, rotate the
other brother's joystick to have him "swing" side-by-side. You want him to
swing up really high and grab onto the next metal handle. Once this happens,
let the previous brother let go of his metal handle, and continue this
process as you traverse across the side of the wall.
Soon, you will reach a wooden plank. Do the same as before - have one brother
swing up to it, and then both of them swing across. At the end of the wooden
plank, you will encounter the ends of wood that are jutting out of the wall.
For this part, you need to swing one of the brothers to a higher wood end and
*not* the horizontal one. Your goal is to go up three wood ends, and then
swing left to another wood plank.
At the next wood plank, sidle across until you make your way to the other
side of the wall -- you'll know you have because the camera will pan again
and you won't be able to sidle any further. At this point, you need to swing
Little Brother to the metal handle to the left. You will need to swing
through a crevice in the wall, so you must be as close to the metal handle as
you can be before you swing.
From here, swing over to the vines, and then climb up to level ground. And
yes, you can finally let go of the trigger buttons for a little bit. When
you're ready, walk over to the bronze gate that Big Brother points out. You
can climb up the gate because it's gilded. When you reach the highest point
of the gilded part, jump up to the grabbable ledge of the gate.
From here, sidle to the right while still grabbing onto this bronze ledge.
Soon, you will reach some funny-looking statues. If you look closely, you
will see metal handles on each of the arms of the statues. For this part, you
must swing across each statue, grabbing onto each metal arm handle and
swinging the other brother across. Do not worry when something crumbles; as
long as the further brother is grabbing onto something, you won't fall.
When you reach the end of the statues, drop down to the ground again. From
here, walk over to the huge door of the tower. Of course, Big Brother and
Little Brother can't possibly open it, and so you will need to get past it
somehow.
See the little bronze knobs on the door? Yes, it's the same as before; grab
onto the bronze knobs with both brothers and jump upward. When you reach only
one horizontal knob, have one brother "swing" to a higher knob. Repeat this
process until you are on the two highest knobs -- the ones closest to the
ledge -- and then simply jump up and grab onto this ledge to reach solid
ground again.
Go to the right, cross the wood plank, and you will find yet more bronze
knobs, this time on the wall. By this point in your adventure, you'll know
exactly what to do -- climb up and "swing" each brother higher. At one point,
you will need *both* brothers holding on the knobs, while the one of the
right simply jumps up to a higher knob. This is because one of the brother's
can't possible jump up while supporting the weight of the other brother!
At the top, walk across the wood beams. Don't worry about the stuff crumbling
behind you, because the crumbling won't "catch up" to you. Just walk across
the beams, all the while enjoying the fact that both brothers are tied
together.
Soon, you'll reach wood steps. Jump up each one; as you know, this tower is
intended for a giant, and not two little brothers! At the top of the stairs,
head out of the window ledge to reach the outside. Yes, there are more bronze
knobs. Get to work!
For this part, simply jump up each bronze knob, side-by-side, with both
brothers. At the highest knobs, jump up to the wood ledge, and then sidle to
the left. You will reach yet more bronze knobs -- swing so both brothers are
holding onto a knob, and then jump up to the bridge.
Head inside the tower in front of you. The door is barely cracked open, but
you will be able to get inside. From here, climb up the books next to the bed
to reach the nightstand. Walk across the bed and jump onto the wood beam that
runs parallel with the wall. Soon, you will reach the caged bird.
It's Little Brother's time to shine! Have him climb the books and squeeze
through the cage next to the bird pictures. Grab onto the bronze knob on the
wall, and jump up to the wood beam. Sidle across the wood beam as you make
your way left. Grab onto the bronze knob in the center post, and "drop down"
a knob. Finally, jump over to the hanging handle for the cage.
Little Brother's weight can't open the cage on its own, so have Big Brother
grab onto Little Brother's legs to pull up the bird cage. The bird is finally
free, although it still looks pretty wounded. As Big Brother, interact with
the bird and you will hitch a ride!
At the end of the flight, watch the sad scene, then head across the wood
bridge to reach the land of the dead giants, which is the setting for the
fifth chapter of the game.
=============================================================================
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
3.6 - Chapter 5
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
=============================================================================
Follow the dirt pathway until you reach a cutscene. Now you know why I call
it "land of the dead giants," right? At any rate, head down the linear path
as it wraps around through the small canyon. Soon, you will find that a
giant's dead arm is blocking your path. Thankfully, you can grab onto that
arrow that's in his elbow. Have both bothers interact with the white parts of
the arrow, and push the arm out of the pathway.
Continue down the path, past the lone sword, and tread into the river that is
full of blood. Slide down the waterfall part of the river and you will reach
a small pool of water. Just as before, you need to have Little Brother grab
ahold of Big Brother, because Little Brother can't swim.
With the twosome together, swim north to the shore. You will see another one
of those broken rope ladders on the elevated area next to you. Like before,
you need to have Big Brother hoist Little Brother up to the upper area. With
Little Brother up, walk over to the dead tree with the long branch sticking
out.
Before you start, position Big Brother so that he is directly under the tree
branch. Now, grab on the tree as Little Brother and slide over toward Big
Brother. As you will see, the tree branch gets lowered because of Little
Brother's weight. When you reach the very end of the branch, you will then be
able to grab ahold of it with Big Brother. Don't worry about the collective
weight, as there is no way to make the branch snap. Slide back over to the
stump of the branch with both brothers. In the end, you will now both be on
the elevated hilltop.
Ahead of you is yet another dead giant. This time, his whole body is blocking
the path! He has a mace in his hand, with an arrow pivoting it upward. Your
goal here is grab onto the arrow as both brothers. This will move the mace,
which in turn moves the giant.
To do this, get up on the rocks to the left of the arrow and leap over to the
arrow. When both brothers grab onto it, the mace will fall, and then the
giant will go plop! into the canyon. Follow the now-open dirt path, and slide
down the small stream to reach yet another blood river, this time a river
with a big sword in it.
Follow the river until you reach some more dead giants blocking your pathway.
Since you can't move these giants, get up on the flat rock plateau to the
right. Now go up the various rock plateaus, and then jump across the small
gap. Here, you will see a wood axe that you can use as a bridge to get to the
opposite side.
On this side, push the arrow with both brothers and you will have a slightly
disturbing cutscene. With the path now cut open, follow the river as you go
under the giants. Jump back up to the land on your right, and follow the dirt
path to the dead giant with the vultures feasting on him. To the right, you
should see a small branch that you can use to go over the river and to the
other side.
Now you will see a crossbow. Before you mess with it, hop over the gap to the
right and you will find a big horn. Blow the horn with Big Brother and you
will receive the achievement "Call of the Giants." Yes, this is the easiest
of the achievements, and also the achievement that the highest percentage of
players have, but it's still worth noting its location. In addition, another
tricky part is that Big Brother needs to do the honors, as Little Brother
cannot muster enough breath to blow the horn.
With the achievement out of the way, head back to the crossbow. You will need
to sidle up the side to get to the level with the crossbow itself. This
crossbow is actually a two-step process. First, you need to pull the white
handles with both brothers to essentially reader the arrow. Then, go around
to the back of the crossbow and interact with the lever as Big Brother. This
will fire the arrow at the dead giant, who will fall flat to the ground and
open up your path.
Head down the small slide of flat rocks and go back across the river by
walking on the same white tree branch. Back on this side of the river, follow
the now open path and hop down the series of rocks. Jump over the gap with
the red river under it, and continue hopping down the rock levels. Sidle
under the waterfall, and watch the small cutscene. It seems now they're both
"blood" brothers, literally!
Follow the dirt path into the cave and traverse across it, past the cauldron,
and into the river. Get out on the left, and walk over to the overlook of the
shrine to reach a small scene. After the scene, you will both be on the
rafter-structure that circles the shrine area. Tip-toe across this rafter,
and wrap around to the bottom steps of the shrine.
Here, you will see two small blood streams and in the middle an interesting
picture of two people on top of each other. Have both brothers go under a
blood stream, then position Big Brother so he's right in front of the
picture. When you interact now, Big Brother will make the same gesture as the
picture. Now, interact with Little Brother, and he will jump on top,
effectively making the two brothers look like the picture.
As this now seemingly mythical figure, head up the steps and over to the
tribe of cultists. As you near them, they will take notice and start
obsessively bowing at you. When you try to walk through them, they will
politely separate while still repeatedly bowing. Walk over to the women (who
is seemingly being killed as an offering) to reach a cutscene. Afterward, run
down the steps and you will reach the end of Chapter 5.
=============================================================================
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
3.7 - Chapter 6
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
=============================================================================
Head down the wooden dock and hop into the canoe. The controls of the canoe
are very simple -- Big Brother controls the left paddle, and Little Brother
controls the right paddle. If you paddle with just one of them, you will turn
the canoe. For now, simply paddle straight by holding up on both brother's
movement sticks.
Afterward, turn right, and you will see a blood waterfall. Go between the two
pillars next to the blood waterfall and you will reach a little cutscene with
the cultists. This triggers the achievement "Behind the Curtain." With that
achievement completed, head back out through the blood waterfall and paddle
through the snow-capped river.
About halfway through, you will notice a few killer whales on the loose.
Well, they aren't quite *killer*, but they can be a bit annoying; that is,
they will jump up into the air, back into the water, and create an annoying
wave that can push you around.
**NOTE: CommodoreTN writes that "the killer whales CAN absolutely kill you.
My first two trips through the river they belly flopped on me and it was game
over!" Thanks for the correction CommodoreTN! :)
Simply paddle your way through this whale-infested river. At the end of it,
you will see a skeleton (presumably of a whale) and you'll need to dock
between these bones. Out of the boat, follow the women who seemingly knows
exactly where to go.
She'll bring you to the floating ice, which is interesting to walk on because
you'll "slide" a little. It's not too different, though, and you can easily
gain traction back in the direction that you need to be heading. You will
need to jump on a few of the floating ice levels, and then you will reach
good ol' snow land again.
Continue following the women and you'll reach a huge turtle. This is
presumably the mother, who is in panic because she cannot find her young.
Completely disregard your guide for now, and hop down on the lower area to
the right of the Mother Turtle. In this area, you will see a turtle on its
back rolling on the ground.
To get the achievement "Turtle Soup," you need to bring all the baby turtles
back to their mother. There are three turtles: (a) the turtle on the ground
when you jump down, (b) the turtle up the path next to the dropoff point, and
(c) the turtle up on a higher hilltop.
First, grab the turtle near you and lug him over to the dropoff point, which
is that little slide-canyon near the second turtle. It should be noted that,
while one brother *can* pick up the turtle and carry him over, you can pick
up these turtles with both brothers, which obviously makes for a much more
quick affair.
Drop the first turtle on the slide; it will go down into the water next to
its Mother and then hop up on the mother's platform. That's one down! The
second baby turtle is right next to the slide, so just move it a few feet and
let it roll.
For the third turtle, you need to go back over to the hilltop with the broken
rope ladder. Just as with all of the other broken ladders, you need to have
Big Brother hoist up Little Brother. With Little Brother up near the turtle,
simply push it to get it to slide down to Big Brother. With the last turtle
on the ground, carry it over to the slide and watch the happy ninja turtles.
You've probably long forgotten about your guide, but she's up the cliff after
you sidle across the ledge. Continue following her and she'll stop at a tree.
Before you continue with what she's planning, you need to get the game's
final achievement. Head up the slope to the left, go past the saw, and jump
up to the bench. Have both brothers sit down on the bench, and the whales
will give you something to sing about. Afterward, you will receive the
achievement "Whale Song."
Yay! All the achievements! Now go back to the saw in the tree and interact
with it as both brothers. You'll need to saw this tree down to get the saw
itself, so slide the saw back and forth by using both movement sticks. Soon,
it will fall, and you'll be free to bring the saw over to the tree next to
the women. After sawing it down, go across the chasm by using the tree as a
bridge.
On the other side, follow the women as she guides you across a bridge and
over to the drawbridge of a city. You'll notice all the frozen people
outside, but for now go past them to find a catapult. Push the capapult
forward, and it will slide down into the frozen people and over to the
drawbridge entrance. As Big Brother, mann the catapult lever and fling both
the women and Little Brother into the city.
From here, you need to rotate the lever as Little Brother to lower the
drawbridge. As Big Brother, walk inside and head over to the women;
similarly, as Little Brother, squeeze through the gate and follow the upper
level. Soon, you'll reach a cutscene which reveals that an invisible monster
is terrorizing this area. You'll need to make note of this, as you'll have to
evade it later.
For now, head north through the city. It's a little confusing because Big
Brother is on the lower level, and Little Brother is on a higher level, but
make your way northward nonetheless. You will soon reach a gate on Little
Brother's side, and a wall on Big Brother's level. Thankfully, there is a
wood rafter on this wall, and you can use this rafter to jump to chasm to the
opposite rafter, and then down to the gate with Little Brother. The women, as
it were, just jumps across the old-fashioned way.
Wait for the women to open the gate, then run like hell to those frozen
statues Interact with them to effectively "hide" behind them so that the
invisible monster does not see you. Afterward, follow the women as she goes
up to the road. Wait for her to jump over to the crane and turn it for you.
Then, grab onto the crane and she'll rotate you over to her.
After dropping down, head over to the next set of frozen statues and hide
behind them to evade the invisible monster again. Wait a little after the
women leaves before eventually following her. She'll go up some stairs, past
a well, and into a little house. The invisible monster's not that stupid, and
ris the house to shreds.
This part of the game can be difficult, as you can actually "die" here, or at
least have to restart, if you aren't fast enough. As you will soon see, you
must outrun the invisible monster here by darting across the bridge. The
problem is that the lanes are slightly different for Little Brother and Big
Brother, and so you need to be aware of the little turns so you don't
accidentally get one brother hung up in the terrain.
It might take a few tries if you don't have a proper controller for this
game, or you just aren't yet used to controlling the two brothers at the same
time. But when you do succeed, you'll reach the end of Chapter 6.
=============================================================================
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
3.8 - Chapter 7
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
=============================================================================
This chapter starts out quite rough, and just gets more heartbreaking as you
get further. To begin, follow the women into this cave-like structure. Little
Brother's having nothing of it, but Big Brother seems to have the hots for
little miss guide.
Big Brother wins the argument, and the threesome must then crouch through a
small tunnel in a cave. At the end, all hell breaks loose, and I mean
literally.
It all ends with the brothers in a ball of webs, with the huge lady spider
spinning away. To begin, you need to swing this web ball back and forth until
it falls to the ground. This doesn't make the spider very happy, and she
tries to grab both of you out of the web. Thankfully, she just gets Big
Brother, but he's now pinned to the ground, helpless as ever, while Little
Brother's simply stuck rolling around in the web ball.
This "boss" fight has a simple procedure:
(1) As Little Brother, roll into the spider to knock her over. You'll need
to get a little speed to successfully do this, so roll over to one side
of the cave and then ram her!
(2) The spider is now helplessly on her back and you have control of Big
Brother again. This part's kinda graphic, but you need to pull one of
the spider's legs. As Big Brother, simply run over to the spider and one
of her legs right off.
(3) The spider will jump up to the ceiling, stalk around a little, and jump
down on Big Brother again. You will now have to repeat this process for
all of the legs.
It takes a while to do, but eventually you'll have that spider completely de-
legged. After the series of cutscenes, walk forward while on the snowy
pathway. An avalanche then triggers, which throws the two brothers down the
hill. After quite a big of sliding, you'll be at your destination! Only, now
Big Brother can't even walk, and so he sits down to rest while Little Brother
goes and gets the cure.
As Little Brother, walk on the tree branch and make your way up to the top of
the tree. Despite looking complex, it's a rather linear path, with no
optional turns or deadends. Simply run and run and soon you'll reach the
water of life.
After you've gotten the stuff, hop down the hole next to the water, and
you'll have a heartbreaking scene, perhaps the most heartbreaking scene in
the game, in which the hugest spoiler of them all happens. After that scene,
you'll need to do the self-explanatory, which is also spoilerilicious, but
basically put the thing in the hole, and cover the thing in the hole with the
dirt. There! Take that, spoilers! (That is perhaps the best spin I can put on
this... as this is perhaps the saddest, melancholic, and most powerful moment
in the history of 'gaming.)
With the deed done, you'll then have a long scene in which Little Brother
flies back to town on the wings of a familiar bird.
=============================================================================
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
3.9 - Epilogue
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
=============================================================================
After you get dropped off, head north to the rocks and hop over to the large
rock in the water. Go across the water by using the fallen tree as a bridge,
and then run over to the small cliffside. Grab on the rock and then jump up
to the ledge, as per usual. Make your way around to the water, which triggers
a cutscene.
After the cutscene, swim through the water and follow the linear path all the
way to the bridge controls at the beginning of the game. Whereas before Big
Brother needed to pull the lever, Little Brother's determination allows him
to pull it down. Superjump (ha) up the small hilltop and run over to the
doctor's house.
After the series of scenes, exit the beach area and run up the path to your
house. Head across the bridge to your father and enjoy the final scenes of
the game. Congratulations on completing Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons! (Yes,
that is about as much exuberance as I can put into it as possible, given the
overwhelming sadness of the ending.) I hope you enjoyed this guide, and if
you found it help, please rate it! ^_^
Thanks for playing! :)

4. Achievements
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
=============================================================================
There are twelve achievements in "Brothers." They are both listed here and
also in the walkthrough text. The "% of Players" is the percentage of players
that have acquired the achievement on Steam. These numbers better go way up
now that you've got a guide to use. :P
=============================================================================
Achievement: Take a Break
-------------------------
Time: Prologue, very beginning
Location: Out of family's house, on the beach
Description: "You took a break from adventuring."
% of Players: 7.1% (According to Steam, 1/10/2014)
Walkthrough: Before you continue with the platform and the lever, you
should get the first achievement of the game. Stop interacting
with the cart so both brothers are free to move, then descend
the stone steps near the bridge to reach a small beach. Follow
the beach to the far side to find a pile of small stones.
Interact with the stones as Little Brother to skip the stones
and receive your first achievement, "Take a Break."
=============================================================================
=============================================================================
Achievement: Wishing Well
-------------------------
Time: Chapter 1, very beginning
Location: Girl playing with ball, old lady on chair
Description: "You threw someone's ball down a well... Shame on you."
% of Players: 11.2% (According to Steam, 1/10/2014)
Walkthrough: You will be on a dirt path at the beginning of Chapter 1. To
the right, you should see a small yard with a stone water well
in the middle. In front of you, you will see an old lady on a
chair and a small girl playing with her ball past her. To
receive the "Wishing Well" achievement, you must grab the ball
from the little girl and toss it in the well.
The little girl gives you a small window to grab the ball
when she bounces it against the wall. As Big Brother, just run
up and hold the interact button to pick up the boy. Walk back
over to the well, which is a bit south of your current
position, and release the interact button near the well to
throw it in. Note that the little girl puts up her hands for
the ball back and even sadly starts to cry when you put it in
the well. This is one of the sadder, more sadistic achieve-
ments, but an achievement nonetheless.
=============================================================================
=============================================================================
Achievement: Bunny Buddies
--------------------------
Time: Chapter 1, middle
Location: Area with the bunnies!
Description: "You made the bunnies play nice."
% of Players: 25.4% (According to Steam, 1/10/2014)
Walkthrough: At the top of the wall, follow the linear path northward and
you will see a group of bunnies in the level below you. You
need to get to that area for the next achievement, so drop
down to the right and run down to the bunny area. In the bunny
area, you will see all black bunnies and just one white bunny.
You will also see a coal pit in the center of the area.
I know what you're thinking, and yes, you are correct. As
Little Brother, grab the white bunny and drop him into the
coal. You will receive the achievement "Bunny Buddies" for
your effort. The next achievement also requires this coal pit,
so don't forget where it is located.
=============================================================================
=============================================================================
Achievement: Black Sheep
------------------------
Time: Chapter 1, middle
Location: From the area with the sheep to the area with the bunnies!
Description: "Every family's got one."
% of Players: 8.8% (According to Steam, 1/10/2014)
Walkthrough: At the bridge with the wheel, we have another steam
achievement to obtain. This one, "Black Sheep," is made clear
by the sheep across the closed bridge. As you might have
guessed, you need to grab one of the sheep and put them in the
coal-pit back at the bunny area.
First, you need to get the bridge down. As Little Brother,
jump on to the hamster wheel next to the bridge and walk on it
to move it. As you move the wheel, the bridge also lowers. You
need to *keep walking* because it will go back up if you stop.
Therefore, you need to hold down on Little Brother's movement
stick for the whole time as Big Brother crosses the bridge.
While running on the wheel with Little Brother, use Big
Brother to cross the bridge and grab a sheep. These sheep are
heavy, so it will take a little bit to carry it back over the
bridge. Just remember to keep the Little Brother moving so he
does not close the bridge. When Big Brother reaches the other
side, you can get off the wheel as Little Brother.
Now it's simply a matter of carrying the sheep all the way
over to the coal pit with the bunnies. Although it is close to
your current location, Big Brother walks rather slowly because
of the weight of the sheep. When you get to the coal pit, drop
the sheep in it to obtain the achievement "Black Sheep."
=============================================================================
=============================================================================
Achievement: Love Birds
-----------------------
Time: Chapter 1, middle; and Chapter 4, middle
Location: Bird cage near area with sheep; inventor's place
Description: "You re-united the two love birds."
% of Players: 6.8% (According to Steam, 1/10/2014)
Walkthrough: First, open the bird cage north of the bridge with the
wheel. The cage is next to the bench. This is the first part
of the "Love Birds" achievement and according to Steam the
most missed achievement.
For the second part of the achievement, you need to see your
good deed through. At the inventor's platform, make your way
down to the hang glider and you will see a rusty telescope on
the railing. Look inside the telescope and move your view
southeast until you see two birds on a branch. Now that you
know that you have reunited these star-crossed lover, you
obtain the achievement.
=============================================================================
=============================================================================
Achievement: Falling Star
-------------------------
Time: Chapter 3, beginning
Location: Right after wolves in the forest
Description: "Make a wish."
% of Players: 12.0% (According to Steam, 1/10/2014)
Walkthrough: At the beginning of chapter three, walk in the forest full
of wolves and you will soon reach a graveyard. Big Brother
throws the torch to the ground, signalling that there must be
no threat of wolves anymore. At any rate, there is an
achievement we can acquire in this very graveyard. From the
entrance of the graveyard, take an immediate right turn and
walk over to the statue of the angel.
It is a little off on its own, and it has candles under it.
To get the achievement, you need to interact with the angel
statue as Little Brother. Hold down on the interact button
until you see a shooting star fly over the head of the angel.
When that happens, you will get the achievement. It takes
around ten seconds, so just wait patiently while interacting
with the statue.
=============================================================================
=============================================================================
Achievement: A Sad Tune
------------------------
Time: Chapter 4, beginning
Location: The man who tries to commit suicide next to his burned
down house
Description: "You made someone feel better."
% of Players: 20.6% (According to Steam, 1/10/2014)
Walkthrough: At the start of Chapter 4, go north and you will see a man
off to the right with a noose around him. Holy...
Yes, he's about to commit suicide by hanging himself. Run
down the slope and get him down! You can use the rope to climb
up the tree; when you're up, head down the branch and untie
him. You can use Big Brother to keep him up in the air while
you have Little Brother climb up and untie the rope.
It doesn't seem to help much, though; the man is still
crying and extremely sad. If you look to the left, you can see
that his house has burned down. Even worse, what looks like
his family is gone, too; they have burned to death and are now
under a red blanket. Overall, this makes for a very bleak
moment that also has some underlying power.
If you try to interact with the man, he won't really respond
to you. This is all really depressing, but you can get an
achievement for helping him out! Drop down to the right of the
tree to reach a small ledge. Sidle across and grab the bottom
portion of the broken house - there is a plank of wood that
you can hold onto.
Make your way to the right, and jump over to the brown piece
of wood in the middle and grab onto it. From here, jump to the
right again and grab onto the floor. Pick yourself up, and
repeat the process with the other brother. On the wood floor,
you will find a strange box at the end. Pick it up and go up
the stairs in the house - the blockade is now gone - and run
over to the man.
You will then have a powerful cutscene in which the man
opens the box and starts to play music. It's a music box, and
it's just what the man needs to get back his will to live. The
three of you bury his family, and then you receive the
achievement.
=============================================================================
=============================================================================
Achievement: Windpipe
---------------------
Time: Chapter 4, middle
Location: Inventor's area, behind inventor's deck
Description: "You made the inventor dance."
% of Players: 22.5% (According to Steam, 1/10/2014)
Walkthrough: Behind the inventor's deck, you will find stairs that lead
up to -- you guessed it -- a windpipe. It is a two-control
operation, which makes me wonder why the inventor even has it
unless he gets the goats to help him. At any rate, Little
Brother is in charge of the lever on the side, while Big
Brother should grab the bar right below the windpipe inside
the circle. Interact with the levers and move them to make
beautiful sound and obtain this achievement.
=============================================================================
=============================================================================
Achievement: Call of the Giants
-------------------------------
Time: Chapter 5, middle
Location: To the right of the crossbow
Description: "You sounded a giant horn."
% of Players: 36.9% (According to Steam, 1/10/2014)
Walkthrough: Now you will see a crossbow. Before you mess with it, hop
over the gap to the right and you will find a big horn. Blow
the horn with Big Brother and you will receive the achievement
"Call of the Giants." Yes, this is the easiest of the
achievements, and also the achievement that the highest
percentage of players have, but it's still worth noting its </pre><pre id="faqspan-3">
location. In addition, another tricky part is that Big Brother
needs to do the honors, as Little Brother cannot muster enough
breath to blow the horn.
=============================================================================
=============================================================================
Achievement: Behind the Curtain
-------------------------------
Time: Chapter 6, beginning
Location: Next to the blood waterfall, immediately after the first turn
in the canoe
Description: "You found a secret."
% of Players: 11.2% (According to Steam, 1/10/2014)
Walkthrough: Head down the wooden dock and hop into the canoe. The
controls of the canoe are very simple -- Big Brother controls
the left paddle, and Little Brother controls the right paddle.
If you paddle with just one of them, you will turn the canoe.
For now, simply paddle straight by holding up on both
brother's movement sticks.
Afterward, turn right, and you will see a blood waterfall.
Go between the two pillars next to the blood waterfall and you
will reach a little cutscene with the cultists. This triggers
the achievement "Behind the Curtain."
=============================================================================
=============================================================================
Achievement: Turtle Soup
------------------------
Time: Chapter 6, middle
Location: Area with the huge Mother Turtle. You can't miss it!
Description: "You helped the turtles to the sea."
% of Players: 24.8% (According to Steam, 1/10/2014)
Walkthrough: Continue following the women and you'll reach a huge turtle.
This is presumably the mother, who is in panic because she
cannot find her young. Completely disregard your guide for
now, and hop down on the lower area to the right of the Mother
Turtle. In this area, you will see a turtle on its back
rolling on the ground.
To get the achievement "Turtle Soup," you need to bring all
the baby turtles back to their mother. There are three
turtles: (a) the turtle on the ground when you jump down, (b)
the turtle up the path next to the dropoff point, and (c) the
turtle up on a higher hilltop.
First, grab the turtle near you and lug him over to the
dropoff point, which is that little slide-canyon near the
second turtle. It should be noted that, while one brother
*can* pick up the turtle and carry him over, you can pick up
these turtles with both brothers, which obviously makes for a
much more quick affair.
Drop the first turtle on the slide; it will go down into the
water next to its Mother and then hop up on the mother's
platform. That's one down! The second baby turtle is right
next to the slide, so just move it a few feet and let it roll.
For the third turtle, you need to go back over to the
hilltop with the broken rope ladder. Just as with all of the
other broken ladders, you need to have Big Brother hoist up
Little Brother. With Little Brother up near the turtle, simply
push it to get it to slide down to Big Brother. With the last
turtle on the ground, carry it over to the slide and watch the
happy ninja turtles.
