001-General Information
-----------------------------------------------------------

This is a walkthrough for the game called Blackwell
Unbound. It is the prequel to The Blackwell Legacy, and it
takes place in 1973. Unlike other games in the Blackwell
series, it stars Lauren Blackwell as the main character.

To contact me about this guide, use my email address,
[email protected]. Currently, I check that
email address about once a month. Make sure the subject
is something like "Blackwell Legacy", so I don't
accidentally mistake it for spam.

002-Characters
-----------------------------------------------------------

Lauren Blackwell: The main character of the game. Lauren is
a spirit medium and a chain-smoker. She helps restless
spirits pass on to the next world.

Joey Malone: Lauren's spirit guide. He is a ghost of a man
from the 1930's, and he helps her save restless spirits.

Isaac Brown: Isaac is a saxophone player whose ghost is
haunting the Roosevelt Island Promenade.

Cecil Sharpe: Cecil is a piano player at Johnny Ivory's. He
used to be in a jazz band called the C Sharps.

Dwayne: Dwayne is a band manager. He used to manage the C
Sharps, and he confirms that both Isaac and Cecil were
members.

Joseph Mitchell: A writer at The New Yorker. He interviewed
Isaac Brown and Mavis Wilcox, shortly before their
respective deaths.

Sarah Brown: Isaac's sister. She and Isaac used to end
every performance with a duet together.

Mavis Wilcox: A woman whose ghost is haunting a
construction site that used to be her apartment.

Harriet Sherman: A woman who used to be neighbors with
Mavis Wilcox. She was paid to leave the apartment complex,
when new owners purchased it.

John Durkin: Mavis Wilcox's husband, who is deceased.

Sam Durkin: Mavis Wilcox's son, who is studying at Columbia
University.

Jack Blackwell: Lauren's brother. She has avoided
contacting him for quite some time.

The Countess: A strange old woman, who clearly has mental
issues. She is also a spirit medium, though she has long
since lost her spirit guide.

003-Walkthrough
-----------------------------------------------------------

The game begins with Lauren Blackwell returning to her home
and smoking a cigarette. Lauren is upset with her partner,
Joey Malone.

The game doesn't really explain what's going on, so here's
the backstory. Lauren is a spirit medium, and Joey is her
spirit guide. He is a ghost from the 1930's. Together,
Lauren and Joey find restless spirits, and they help the
spirits move on to the next world.

The controls for this game are simple. Simply move the
mouse around and click somewhere to have your character go
to that location.
Sometimes, when you move the mouse over an item, a text box
appears. You can left-click to pick up or interact with the
item, and you can right-click to examine it.

Lauren doesn't want to move right now. Press the tab button
to switch from Lauren to Joey. Move Joey to the left and
click on Lauren to start a conversation. Pick whatever
conversation topics you want, and eventually, Lauren will
be ready to continue.

Switch to Lauren with the tab button. Move your mouse to
the top of the screen to see her inventory. Right-click on
the case list to examine it. There are only two more cases
left to investigate.

You can solve the cases in either order, and in fact, you
can solve them simultaneously. To make it easier, I'll
discuss the two cases separately.

003a-Case One
-----------------------------------------------------------

In Lauren's home, take the polaroid camera on the coffee
table and the dictophone on the couch. Leave the house
through the front door, then go to the Roosevelt Island
Promenade.

A ghost playing the saxophone appears. Try talking to him,
and he ignores you. Switch to Joey and try talking to him.
Joey has no more luck than Lauren does. As Joey, click on
the man's saxophone. The two of them get in a minor fight.
The man will hit Joey and mention Johnny Ivory's.

If you talk about Johnny Ivory's to Lauren, she mentions
checking the phone book. Exit this screen through the far
left, and return to Lauren's home. Click on the phone book
on the coffee table and look up "Johnny Ivory" to get the
address.

Leave Lauren's home and go to Johnny Ivory's. It's empty,
except for a piano player. Talk to him, and he introduces
himself as "C". That's a curious name. Switch to Joey, and
have him examine the sheet music on the piano. It confirms
that C's real name is Cecil Sharpe.

Examine the photographs on the wall. One of them is of the
ghost saxophone player. The plaque beneath says that this
photo comes from Jambalaya Records. If you talk to C about
the photo, he denies knowing anything.

Take a photograph of the photograph on the wall, using
Lauren's polaroid camera. Then, leave Johnny Ivory's and go
to Lauren's home. Look up Jambalaya Records in the phone
book.

Go to Jambalaya Records, then go inside. The man working
there is Dwayne. Talk to him if you want. Afterwards, click
on the photograph in your inventory, then drag it over to
Dwayne. Dwayne will say that the band is called The C
Sharps.

Go to Lauren's notes, which is in her inventory. Click on
Cecil Sharpe, then click on The C Sharps. Lauren puts these
two things together and determines that Cecil was in the C
Sharps. Talk to Dwayne about Cecil and the C Sharps, and
Dwayne confirms this information.

Return to Johnny Ivory's. Talk to Cecil and open your
notebook. Talk about him being in the C Sharps, then talk
to him about the saxophone ghost player twice. Cecil
accuses you of being from The New Yorker, and he reveals
that the ghost is named Isaac Brown.

Ask Cecil about the New Yorker reporter. Cecil says it is a
man named Mitchell. If you solved the other case before
this one, you met Joseph Mitchell already. If not, return
to Lauren's home and look up The New Yorker in the
phonebook. Call them on the phone. Joseph Mitchell doesn't
pick up, so Lauren decides to visit him in person.

Leave Lauren's home and go to The New Yorker. She will talk
with Joseph Mitchell. Open up the notebook and ask him
about Isaac Brown. You need to talk to Joseph Mitchell
about Isaac four times, in order to learn about Isaac's
sister.

Go to Johnny Ivory's and talk to Cecil about Isaac's
sister. He gets upset. Switch to Joey, then click on Cecil.
Joey figures that Cecil was in love with Isaac's sister.

Switch to Lauren, then talk with Cecil. Ask him about love,
and he admits that he loved Sarah. Talk to him completely
about Isaac and Sarah. When you end the conversation, Cecil
mentions that Isaac and Sarah used to do a duet together,
at the end of every show.

Talk to Cecil again and ask about the duet. He plays
Sarah's part of the duet. Ask Cecil about the duet again,
then use the dictophone on Cecil to record the duet.

Return to Roosevelt Island Promenade. A crazy old woman is
here. She will talk for a while, then she leaves. If you
solved the second case first, the woman does not appear at
this point.

Use the dictophone on Isaac. He will play along with the
duet. He asks if you are Sarah. No matter which answer you
give, Isaac will come to grips with his death.

Joey and Lauren help Isaac move on to the next world, and
he mentions being killed by an old woman. When Lauren
returns to the normal world, the crazy old woman has
returned.

Unlike everyone else, the woman can see Joey. She says that
she is the Countess, and she claims that she can save
souls, just like Lauren. The old woman calls herself the
Countess.

Lauren and Joey chase the Countess, but she gets away. The
two of them return to Lauren's home. Switch to Joey and
talk to Lauren to continue the game.

003b-Case Two
-----------------------------------------------------------

Leave Lauren's house through the front door, then go to
53rd and Lex. The gate to the construction site is locked.
Switch to Joey, then go through the gate.

A ghost is here. Talk to her to learn that she wants
someone to knock on the door first. Click on the gate and
talk to Lauren. Ask her for help, then ask her to knock on
the gate door.

Luaren does so, and the ghost talks to Joey. The
conversation doesn't go anywhere, as this woman is
convinced she is inside Apartment D, on the third floor of
the building.

Click on the trailer door to go through it. Right-click on
the poster to see that Seagram Realty runs the construction
site, and right-click on the letter (on the desk) to read
it. A Harriet Sherman is unhappy with Seagram Realty. They
paid her to move out of the apartment complex, but they are
not paying as much as they promised they would.

Go out through the trailer door, then go out through the
gate. Return to Lauren's home and use the phonebook on her
coffee table. Look up Harriet Sherman, then use the phone
to call her. Mention Seagram Realty to her, and she agrees
to let you visit her house, provided you have her sixty
dollars.

Grab the rainy day jar, which is on a shelf by the door.
Leave Lauren's house and go to Harriet's. Lauren gives her
the money from the rainy day jar. If you don't have that
money, she kicks you out of the house until you get it.

Once you give Harriet the money, you can talk to her. Open
your notebook and talk about the construction site ghost.
You need to talk to her about the ghost multiple times in a
row, to learn that Seagram paid everyone to leave the
building. After you talk to her about the construction site
three times, Harriet mentions Mavis Wilcox.

Talk to Harriet about Mavis Wilcox six times, to learn
Mavis' story. Mavis refused to leave her apartment, and one
night, she was killed by an unknown person. Harriet has
Mavis' old things.

Close the notebook and ask Harriet for Mavis' things. They
are in an envelope, which Lauren picks up. Then say goodbye
and leave for 53rd and Lex.

A crazy old woman is here. She will talk for a while, then
she leaves. If you solved the first case first, the woman
does not appear at this point.

Mavis' envelope is in the inventory. Right-click on it to
see it. It contains a letter from a reporter, as well as a
picture of her and her son. Her son liked Columbia
University, or at least, he's wearing a Columbia University
sweatshirt. This lets you know that she has a son.

Have Joey go through the gate, then talk to Mavis. Question
her further, and say that you are her son. She welcomes
Joey as Sam. You can now ask her about several things. The
important thing to ask about is her husband. She says that
he was named John Durkin, and he is dead.

End the conversation and leave through the gate. It's time
to track down Mavis' son. Switch to Lauren and open her
notes (in the inventory box). Click on "Sam" and "John
Durkin" to deduce that Sam's name is Sam Durkin.

Return to Lauren's home. We know that Sam likes Columbia
University, based on his sweatshirt in the photo. Look up
Columbia University in the phone book on the coffee table,
then use the phone. Call Columbia University and ask for
Sam Durkin.

It turns out that Sam is a student there. He won't talk
about his mother, until you tell him what apartment she
lived in. Well, from talking to Mavis and Harriet, you know
that she lived on the third floor, in the D apartment.
Enter "3D".

Talk to Sam about everything, especially his mother's
living arrangements. He mentions that he got her a present
for Mother's Day, but he refuses to say what it was.

Now, Mavis' letter (which is in your inventory) is from a
reporter named J. Mitchell. If you solved the other case
before this one, you met Joseph Mitchell already. If not,
look up The New Yorker in the phonebook. Call them on the
phone. Joseph Mitchell doesn't pick up, so Lauren decides
to visit him in person.

Go to the New Yorker, and you can talk to Mitchell about
Mavis, five times. He confirms a lot of what you already
know. When you talk to him about Sam's present, he says
that it was a copy of "Alice in Wonderland_.

Go back to 53rd and Lex. Send Joey through the gate and
have him talk to Mavis again. Choose to ask more questions,
then ask about Sam's present. As the conversation goes on,
Joey convinces Mavis to leave the construction site. This
causes Mavis to come to grips with her death.

Joey and Lauren help Mavis move on to the next world, and
she mentions being killed by an old woman. When Lauren
returns to the normal world, the crazy old woman has

003c-Endgame Sequence
-----------------------------------------------------------

Joey and Lauren are at Lauren's home. As Joey, talk to
Lauren. They try to figure out what's going on with the
Countess. Clearly, she is a spirit medium, because she can
see Joey. It seems as if her method of saving people
involves killing them.

There is only one connection between the two cases: Joseph
Mitchell. He interviewed Isaac and Mavis, and shortly
afterwards, they were killed. The Countess is trying to use
Mitchell as a spirit guide, in that she kills whoever he
mentions in his columns.

Leave Lauren's home and go to The New Yorker. You can talk
to Joseph Mitchell about many things. In the end, Lauren
forces Joseph to write about her.

Lauren and Joey return to Lauren's home. Switch to Joey,
then talk to Lauren. When their conversation ends, the
Countess knocks on the door. Go to the door and open it.
The Countess has read about Lauren in The New Yorker, and
she wants to "save" Lauren by killing her.

Talk to the Countess, and a fight will break out. Get the
cigarette from Lauren's inventory and use it on the
Countess. The Countess will be injured, and Lauren
collapses momentarily.

Joey takes over. He talks to the Countess for a bit. Take a
step to the left, then talk to the Countess again. She
steps closer to Joey. Take another step left, then talk to
her again. She steps closer to Joey.

Repeat the process of moving left, then talking to the
Countess. Joey will lead her all the way left, to the
railing. Lauren will then wake up. Walk to the left and
click on the Countess. Lauren pushes her off the railing
and kills her.
