-Dedication-
------------
Wow, it's been 9 years since my last update! I decided to come back here when
somehow the winds of time touched me and said I should check my GameFAQs
account again. Then I realized that you still read this guide even after those
9 years. I can't express how flattered I am that you guys still contact me
and appreciate the guide even after all those years. You guys are so precious.
So I thought that the best way to give back to such amazing readers is to
update this guide and make it cleaner and better. Once again, thanks a lot
guys. I hope this guide continues to help amidst the era of video and forum
dominated video game guides. This is for old and new players of such an
amazing classic game we all love!

---------
-Preface-
---------
I thought of making this guide when I was taking a walk inside the
message board of this game. One member said that there is no guide
here that tackles 100% surefire way of getting heroes in Kenji's Journey.
I decided to make one, so that I can at least help others :)
Okay, it's time to start the guide. I'll try to make things clear so
that people may understand. Are you ready? Let's start.

--------------
-Introduction-
--------------
Hello people! It's my second guide, again for Liquid Entertainment's
Battle Realms! Now, our topic is about Zen Masters that can be acquired in
Kenji's Journey.

Zen Masters are either acquired while progressing through the mission, like in
the case of Vetkin and Garrin, some are acquired immediately after starting a
mission while some are acquired through unobvious manner. These unobvious guys
are most likely the main attraction of this guide *cough *Tao *cough

So without further ado, here are your Zen Masters!

------------
-The Guide-
------------
Before anything else, let me put a list of all acquirable heroes in campaign.

!! semi-SPOILERS AHEAD !!

Dragon Path
> Otomo
> Shinja
> Garrin
> Arah
> Gaihla
> Soban
> Kazan
> Tao
> Monks
> Ninjas

Serpent Path
> Otomo
> Shinja
> Vetkin
> Budo
> Utara
> Koril
> Ninjas
> Monks
> Tao

Alright. Look at the list and see if there is one hero that surprised
you and made you go full "Wait what?!". If there is, then kindly read
this guide to learn how to get them.

One last warning. This guide is like your fridge without power. It will spoil
everything inside it. This guide contains massive spoilers. Because I need to
explain how to acquire the Zen Masters, it's imperative that I mention certain
elements in the plot that are necessary for their acquisition.

!! SPOILERS AHEAD !!

-------------
-Dragon Path-
-------------

> Otomo
How to get:
Finish the first mission. He will join automatically after doing what's
Dragonly right: save the helpless peasants.

> Shinja
How to get:
Make him submit by completing either of the provinces Otomo presents. In the
eastern province, you must kill all enemies which can be an easy path to
happiness or slow grind to boredom. Make sure you don't let any pesky peasant
run away or you'll sweep the whole map just to find that one dude who stops
you from progressing. In western province, destroy Shinja's keep. That's it.
In both cases, whichever you choose as the second province to conquer, you have
to defeat him in combat until he submits.
Notes:
In my experience, it seems that in Dragon Path, he actively seeks opponents
himself like a normal unit. In Serpent Path, he's a prima donna. If he can
choose so, he won't work and just stand there watching Kenji die to a master
warlock.

> Garrin
How to get:
When you are working to get to the Swan's Pool, pick the middle path then save
him from being imprisoned in his own keep. Help him destroy the wolf clan and
remember to keep him alive to keep him for the rest of the campaign.

> Arah
How to get:
On your road to Swan's Pool, pick the eastern path where you'll fight the
unprepared wolf miners instead. In the start of mission, move a little to north
and you'll see her being harassed by some buffed wolf perverts. Save her and
she's yours. Make sure to keep her alive okay?
Note: Getting Arah wil prevent you from getting Garrin.

> Gaihla
How to get:
After completing the Serpentholm mission, picking the middle path will let you
take Gaihla. She is in the somewhat middle-ish of map. Just move your men
around the center part of the map, maybe 60% north and 40% south, if that makes
sense. She is being harassed by some pitch slingers. Save her and
let her live for the rest of mission and she's yours. Wolf clan seems to have
quite an inclination to harassing helpless women don't they?

> Soban
How to get:
> Forget Gaihla and pick the eastern path to get Soban instead. The eastern
path is where you'll deal with the Lotus clan. Build a very powerful army and
charge straight to the southern part of map. It's unclear to me what triggers
the events for Soban but the safest way to go is to not attack any major base.
This means, you must not trigger any conversation from Issyl or Koril. Just go
down and make a peaceful trip to the south as much as possible. But who are we
kidding here, we're talking about the Lotus. They won't make it easy for us.
There will be some outposts on the way, kill those, just make sure you don't
attack the major bases and we're good.

After going to the south, you'll see a high ground with cliff on top. Climb up
to the top through the zigzag-ish path and reach the cliff. You'll see Soban
with his two acolytes arguing with Koril. After the argument, you'll see Koril
teleport away and Soban will walk. You can control him at this point but he
won't follow you properly. When you attempt to control him he will run around
like madman. He's still probably not used to being commanded by a strange new
clan that emerges out of nowhere. So he's like "NO!! Don't poke me with your
cursor AAAAH!!". If he's like that, you'll just be disappointed and probably
restart the mission and he just might die to Lotus reinforcements that will
come.

Did I just say reinforcements? Yeah that's right. Koril seems pissed Soban
defected from the Lotus so he sends in big amounts of Lotus warriors to destroy
Soban and his new unsuspecting clan... you. So defend him and trust me, he IS
hard to defend. He'll gladly charge ALONE and go full John Wick on incoming
Warlocks. Just like I said, don't startle him by giving him a single command.
If you think ordering him to stand ground will work, no. So just let him walk
by himself and guard him against opposing attacks. He wants to go to Issyl's
base and wants to destroy it, so help him and after destroying all opposing
forces, he's yours. Keep him alive until the end of mission to successfully get
him.

Now I want to take note that it's not clear what he really wants. I tried
destroying Issyl's base ahead of him but he seems unsatisfied and started
attacking outposts. So my advice is to just kill every Lotus you can if they
are present to wherever Soban is walking towards.

> Kazan
How to get:
He'll be under your control, although temporarily, in the Swan's Pool mission.
He'll return in the Dragon Spire mission and will be with you for the rest of
the campaign.

> Tao and the ninjas
How to get:
> He says he is the master of balance but the mission where he's in is totally
imbalanced for the enemies. Pick the ninjas when asked between Monks and Ninjas
to, obviously, get Ninjas. This mission is incredibly easy. Just go straight
to the right part of the map and destroy whatever is there to be destroyed with
Tao still standing on ground and he, together with the ninjas, is yours.

> Monks
How to get:
> Forget that ninja-monk who preaches about balance all the time and take pure
monks, who are straight up sure with their allegiance, by picking the western
path instead. I mean, who needs someone who has identity crisis right?
Ninja-monk.. pfft! Just kidding, I know you guys love Tao. Let's hear it for
Tao! But we're sacking him for now. Anyway, just complete this monk mission to
get them. Oh and a little tip: don't try to destroy the ninjas, they are
infinite in number.

--------------
-Serpent Path-
--------------

> Otomo
How to get:
Pick the western province to get Otomo. Don't worry about him dying, he's a
major character *wink.

> Shinja
Notes:
In my experience, it seems that in Serpent Path he'll just stand there whenever
he gets the opportunity to do so. He'll gladly watch Kenji get torn apart by
the Wolf Clan and even sometimes, if he doesn't feel like defending himself,
he won't.

> Vetkin
How to get:
Take the middle path to the Swan's Pool and complete the mission. This one's
kind of weird, sometimes you can control him sometimes you can't. Either way
just keep him alive when you destroy all enemies and you have his loyalty.

> Budo
How to get:
> Aah Budo, the infamous fatass slavemaster from Serpent Clan. This guy can
make a peasant run faster than Usain Bolt with enough "gifts". Take note that
getting Vetkin will never prevent you from getting Budo. You can ignore Vetkin
by picking the western path instead but I always get Budo after taking Vetkin.
After the Swan's Pool mission, you'll automatically move to Eastern Province
and he'll be available for acquisition. Notice that it's not possible for
Dragon Clan to do the same for Arah? Because after Swan's Pool you get to take
the western province instead.

To acquire him just run your characters to the west and make Kenji talk to him.
Don't engage in any sort of dangerous battle, just run to the west. You'll know
why when you get there. As always, keep him alive for the rest of the mission
as is the custom.

> Utara
How to get:
> After the Serpentholm mission, you'll be on your way to choose from three
provinces again. Choosing the western will let you get Utara. The cutscene
at the beginning will let you know where she is. She is at the middle of the
map. If you can't find her in the middle, just waltz around the middle part.
Maybe somewhere around 60% south and 40% north. Just go near the keep and she
will show herself. Let her live until the end of mission as usual to use her
throughout the campaign.

> Koril
How to get:
Instead of taking THE black geisha Utara (some bias from me, sorry), take the
eastern path instead. Just charge to Koril's base at northeast-ish part of the
map. Beat him to submission and he'll join you. I'll let you guess the next
sentence... yeah keep him alive.

> Ninjas
How to get:
Pick and complete the Ninja mission when asked between the Monks and Ninjas.
Plain and simple. That's it. I'm tempted to spoil some stategy.. but I won't.

> Monks
How to get:
If your conscience is already consumed by the Serpent's evil, you can ignore
the natural bad guys in ninjas and make the monks worse than ninjas ever will
be. Complete their mission to get them to your side.

> Tao
How to get:
> "Whoa whoa... wait what?!" If that's how you reacted when you saw this, don't
worry, that's my reaction too. When Darksmile08 threw me an email about this a
decade ago, I was really surprised by this.

So yeah, if you choose to demolish the faith and self righteousness of the
monks, cheer up! You can raise a new evil clan together with the master of
balance himself. Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome our new friend..... TAO!!
*a round of applause*

To get him, go to the right side of the map when the mission starts. This where
we'll normally build a base because of abundant rice and water. You'll never
miss it. What you won't miss too is Tao. No I'm kidding, 90% of us definitely
missed him. You will see him being ganged up by monks. They're probably pissed
off there's an poser monk wandering the world calling himself a Ninja-Monk.
Now that I think about it, in Dragon Path, the ninjas hate him too. Poor Tao.
Anyway let's do him a favor and rescue him, keep him alive too. He needs it.

That's it!
All listed heroes and how to acquire them 100%.
If I missed a hero, please do contact me. I'd be really interested
if there's still a Zen Master this guide has missed. So if there's couple of
them not here, please do tell me!
