I. Introduction

 I.A. Walkthrough/FAQ Introduction
      As I was replaying Swords and Serpents one day, I came to a point in the
    game that I had forgotten how to get past. So I did what many gamers do today
    and looked online for a walkthrough. Much to my annoyance I found only one,
    and that one was only 25% complete! So I did what any hardcore gamer would
    do and set about righting this wrong.
      This walkthrough in its current form will take you through the game step-
    by-step. This guide is not complete (although close), however, as there is
    much information which I would like to have added but lack the vigor. Such
    additions entail a more detailed beastiary, specific spell damage, hit
    percentage determination, etc. etc.
      If you have any information not found here and would like to add to this
    guide, I do accept contributions. All you have to do is go to section
    XI.A. to see how!

 I.B. The Quest
      Your objective is clear, your friends are gathered, and a dungeon lies
    before you. You must travel far underground to slay the dragon! Whether your
    party can survive and triumph or fail and perish will take luck, skill, and
    knowledge. Collect the Ruby treasures of the fallen Ruby warrior and complete
    your destiny!

II. Characters

 II.A. Magician

    Starting Equipment: Staff, Leather
    Primary Attribute: Intelligence
    Summary: Although physically weak, this class is one of the most useful as
             they possess the ability to cast spells. The game is argueably
             impossible to complete without at least one magician in the party.
    Level Up Bonuses: +1 to either Str, Int, or Agl; +1-2 HP; +1-3 MP

 II.B. Warrior

    Starting Equipment: Sword, Leather
    Primary Attribute: Strength
    Summary: This brute force class combines the ability to inflict a large
             amount of damage with having a high HP maximum.
    Level Up Bonuses: +1 to either Str, Int, or Agl; +2-4 HP

 II.C. Thief

    Starting Equipment: Dagger, Leather
    Primary Attribute: Agility
    Summary: A nimble class which has a medium HP range. The thief has an
             unusual propensity to inflict a death blow on an enemy.
    Level Up Bonuses: +1 to either Str, Int, or Agl; +1-3 HP

 II.D. Pre-made Party

      This is the party created if you select "Use Existing Party" when starting
    a new game. It is a well-rounded, medium-strength party. A custom party can
    have much better stats though.

 II.E. Attributes

    Strength (Str): The ability to inflict a greater amount of physical damage.
                    (Max Value: 20)

    Intelligence (Int): Determines magicians initial max MP. Allows the character
                        to act wisely in battle thus determines efficiency (how
                        many turns to act before enemies and how quickly when
                        combined with Agility). (Max Value: 20)

    Agility (Agl): Determines queue of attack when combined with Intelligence and
                   likelyhood of hitting enemy. (Max Value: 20)

    Hit Points (HP): The amount of damage that one can take before dying.
                     (Max Value: 31)

    Magic Points (MP): The amount of energy available to cast spells. (Max
                       Value: 31)

  II.F. Experience Requirements per Level

    Level 1 to 2: 100 exp
    Level 2 to 3: 200 exp
    Level 3 to 4: 400 exp
    Level 4 to 5: 800 exp
    Level 5 to 6: 1,600 exp
    Level 6 to 7: 3,200 exp
    Level 7 to 8 thru 15 to 16: 6,400 exp

    Note: When you gain a level your experience points return to 0. Using a
          password to restore a game also resets your experience to 0.
          Level 16 is the max.

   §1. Your party will mysteriously be plopped down in A11. Your first objective
       is very simple - reach the temple without dying. If the party dies,
       either your party stinks, you have bad luck, or you over-extended
       yourself.
   §2. Stick around the temple to heal after a few battles. When you are strong
       enough (confidence or level) visit the armory.
   §3. Save up and buy better weapons first so that battles are finished more
       quickly - remember that the best defense is a good offense.
   §4. Pick up Sting at O15.
   §5. Once you are equipped, head for the stairs.  You will have to defeat
       several guards before you can go down to level 2.  Be sure to save the
       game especially if you are below level 3.
   §6. The enemies on level 2 are harder but the experience is much better. If
       you only need gold, you can stay on level 1 as they give the same amount.

   §1. As always, stay close to the stairs to get a feel for the monster
       difficulty. There are no refilling places in the level so keep an eye
       on your magic points.
   §2. Head to L3 to get a Plus 1 Sword. While it may not be as good as the
       best sword
       you can buy at the armory, you won't have to save up 750 gold.
   §3. Get up to A1 to get Shield. If you can spare the MP, always cast it to
       avoid being damaged. It only costs 1 MP and most likely will save you MP
       in not having to cast as many Heals.
   §4. If you do need to get back to level 1 quickly, take either the zoom tube
       (C16) or teleporter (F8).
   §5. Head to the stairs. You will have to fight 5 Goblins, so again be prepared
       and save it. By this time you're party should probably be level 5.

   §1. As you travel beware the Mages.  There is a Magic Fountain but only after
       traveling through the entire level. Use the zoom tube to get back to the
       temple quickly. Don't worry, any switches activated will remain activated
       when you leave the level.
   §2. Follow the hall to the H8-H9 door. This is the only unlocked door in the
       room. The rest shall be opened by switches.
   §3. Head to the northwest room, pick up the spell, and unlock door I8-I9.
   §4. Now go to the southeast room. It is a long spiral hall so be prepared
       before trying to get to the switch.
   §5. When you come to the deadend, pass through the secret wall to the north
       for the switch. Now head back through the halls and go to the northeast
       room.
   §6. Travel north along the wall for a safe, short path to the stairs. Heal
       your party to max HP because you will have to walk past the fountain to
       reach the stairs.
   §7. Before going down, pass into the secret room just north of the fountain.
       When you later find yourself back in the area of level 2, use the Gold
       Key on the locked door (Lv2:N15-O15) to obtain the Ruby Glasses. You can
       then discard the Gold Key.

   §1. If you ever need to get back to the temple, head for the zoom tube at K16.
   §2. From the stairs head out westward and pick up the Strength spell before
       unlocking the door.
   §3. Go back around and activate the northwest trigger (A1).
   §4. Travel east and activate the northeast trigger (P1).
   §5. Go south by using the secret doors and then west to quickly get to the
       southwest trigger (A16).
   §6. Finally, get the last trigger (P16) by passing through M14-M15.
   §7. While in the southeast room, get the spell.
   §8. Head to H16 and go north to the now opened door.
   §9. In H12 if you do not go left, you will have to take the long way back
       around to try again.
   §10. At G11 they will again tell you to go left. Going left here only triggers
        the switches in the correct order (E11,E5,K5,K11). Now you can pass
        through door G11-G10.
   §11. Refill all HP, get the fountain, and head to level 5.

   §1. Make your way to I7 and take the one-way door into the northwest room.
   §2. Pick up Passwall. If you are low on MP, get the fountain otherwise save it.
   §3. Use Passwall to pick up the 400 gold, Glow Cloak, and Flight.
   §4. Go to the southwest room by using Passwall. Here is the armory and temple.
       Now you can use this area as a base.
   §5. You may want to backtrack to Lv3 now that you have Passwall. Now you can
       get the Mirror Shield at Lv3:H1 by Passwall G1-H1. Other accessible areas
       are teleporters that push you up several levels and only useful later.
   §6. Once properly outfitted and experienced, go down the stairs.

   §1. You can either get to this level from Lv5 stairs or a Lv1 teleporter
       (Lv1:A1) after you have Passwall.
   §2. Go get the Brass Key at E12. You will need it for Lv8.
   §3. Work your way north to F1 and go east through the secret door after you
       heal the party.
   §4. Visit the room immediately to the south. Cast Flight to avoid the traps and
       get Thunder.
   §5. To get the Ruby treasures, either go to the Lv1 teleporter or go through
       K10-K11 followed by M14-M15.
   §6. While in the Alpha/Beta levels, Passwall into the O13 P14 block to get
       Major Heal.
   §7. Head to the stairs.

   §1. In this level 90% of the walls are invisible. This makes it difficult to
       get around unless you count your steps. Once the level is mapped out, it
       is very simple to get through.
   §2. If you have the Horseshoe, go to H4 and use it to gain 5000 exp. This
       will usually give you a level up. Be sure to check your experience points
       to make sure you don't waste it. Remember that experience points don't
       roll over after a level up!
   §3. On the last level you got Major Heal so you won't have to hunt it down
       this time.
   §4. Use the Brass Key to unlock both doors. Afterwards, feel free to get rid
       of the key.
   §5. Fight a few monsters and head on down the stairs.

   §1. Depending upon which stair you take, you will end up on either the east
       or west side of the level.
   §2. If you're feeling adventurous, you can clear the rooms of monsters,
       however, there is no real prize for it.
   §3. Either way you come down, make your way to the center of the level casting
       Flight before going through the secret door to avoid the traps.
   §4. Head north into the small room and Passwall north.
   §5. Passwall into the room guarded by warnings. The man will give you 1000
       experience and then teleport you back out to Lv9:L12 when you visit him
       a second time. Each time you go back now, he will subtract a 1000
       experience.
   §6. You can get the 200 gold by Passwall I6-I7.
   §7. If you need a fountain, you must use one after you use the teleporter so
       you might as well save the two in the teleporter section. Simply Passwall
       to teleporter l (D7).
   §8. This is the zoom tube section of the level. There are four zoom tubes but
       one of them can be entered backward to go onward. You'll want to go down
       only one level as that is where another Temple and Armory are located.
   §9. Go backward into zoom tube v (O3) to reach level 10 starting in the south.
   §10. For the more difficult but shorter path to the level 10 Temple you can
        take zoom tube w (O5) to level 13 followed by taking any zoom tube in
        Lv13 to Lv10.

       This will teleport you to H8.

   §1. There are two objectives for this level - get the crystal and the spells.
   §2. There is no easy was about it. The spells are in the northwest and
       northeast corners of the level with no straight path (allbeit many a
       Passwall).
   §3. To get the crystal simply Passwall C15-C14.
   §4. With the crystal travel all the way down to Lv1:A14 where the old man
       wanted you to bring him the Black Crystal. He won't take it; just
       teleport you to Lv13:H8.
   §5. Don't drop the crystal until you have the Ruby Necklace in hand!

   §1. This is the most difficult level thus far. You must get the Ruby Necklace
       by fighting at least 6 groups of 7 enemies. Make sure you conserve MP.
   §2. First, go to N9 and Passwall east.
   §3. Fight the enemies and then Passwall south. Repeat this several times until
       you get to the amulet.
   §4. If you get winded, the only easy way out of this section is by Passwall
       G8-F8. It is a one-way Passwall, so only do this if you're spent.
   §5. Always keep an eye on your MP so you don't have to Last Resort.
   §6. Once you get the amulet, a few of the enemies will have come back to
       block your way out.
   §7. There are actually two ways out of this section but the second is very
       difficult to reach, but on your way you'll pick up a Mage Staff.
   §8. Passwall north from J16 to J10, east to N10, and then south for a total
       of 10 battles with 7 enemies each.
   §9. Now you have to make your way to Lv10 assuming you have all the Ruby
       treasures by taking a zoom tube.
   §10. Talk with the man at Lv10:L3 and he will transport you to Lv14:A1.

   §1. The enemies on levels 14-16 are all very powerful and should not be taken
       lightly. Try to avoid fights at this point in the game.
   §2. Level 14 and level 15 are somewhat combined as there are many stairs
       connecting the two. It is easiest to ignore most of the stairs and Passwall
       where you need to go.
   §3. Note there is only one relief on 14 and that is the Magic Foutain at H7.
   §4. To get the Phalanx spell, go to A4, don't take the stairs, and Passwall
       south. Now just Passwall B6-B7 to get into the spell room.
   §5. If you need to get back to Lv10, take stairs A4 down and Passwall Lv15:
       A5-B5 or get to Lv15:O15 for a zoom tube.
   §6. If you want to keep going, go down the stairs at M3.

   §1. If you have collected all the green Victory clues and place them in the
       order in which level they are, you should have a map to get to the dragon.
   §2. Otherwise, there is nothing to do in the level except get killed.
   §3. The following is the summary of these directions.
   §4. It is best at this point in the game to just run away from the wandering
       monsters to save magic for the dragon.
   §5. Go to B14 where you will be told that Victory lies here. To avoid two
       traps cast Flight before continuing.
   §6. Passwall north and turn west.
   §7. Take two steps west and backup one space to activate the teleporter at A13.
       You will end up at E12.
   §8. Going west, Passwall twice and turn north.
   §9. Go north and east to K5. Turn south.
   §10. Passwall, go south one step, and turn west.
   §11. Passwall again and take the corridor to the center of the level.
   §12. Defeat the dragon. This is actually quite easy as it is only one enemy.
        I have defeated the dragon as low as level 12 so a better equipped party
        should have no problem.
   §13. If you do need help, simply cast Deadeye, Strength, and Major Heal with
        magicians while whacking away with the rest of the crew.
   §14. The screen will shake and you get the credits upon the dragon's defeat.

IX. Secrets/Hints/Tactics

*From the instruction book:

*Your first goal should be to get better arms and armor, while
increasing your experience levels.

*It gets harder to go up an experience level as your characters get
stronger, so you will have to go deeper into the dungeon, as the
monsters on lower levels give you more experience points if you vanquish
them.

*If faced by too strong a foe, don't be afraid to run. Discretion is a
better part of valor.

*If you find yourself low on health or spell points, don't hesitate to
head for a temple, before its too late.

*Magician: Heal Thyself.

*Once you make it to level five, you can use the shop and temple there
as a base for deeper exploration.

*Try to explore a level completely. By looking at the map display, you
can get an idea of where secret doors and rooms may be.

*If you're totally stuck and 100% sure that there's absolutely no way
out, select LAST RESORT from the ATTRIBUTES/INVENTORIES menu.

*The most balanced team is a warrior, thief, and two magicians.

§Tapping the attack button will often let you attack between monster attacks. If
you simply wait for your turn, they get more attacks!

§Experiment with attacking different parts of enemies. For example, Zombies
are very weak to head attacks.

§Keep at least one space open in each character's inventory in case an enemy
would have an item. You won't get anything if you have no room!

X. FAQ

Q1.  How do I find ... or get to ...?
A1.  This is a walkthrough. Either read up until the point where you're stuck
    or do a word find.

Q2.  Why does my party keep dying?
A2.  You should try leveling up. Even though the bonuses are small, they do make
    a difference. Also, the more monsters you fight, the better the chance to
    get better weapons/armor. And simply know your limits in your distance from
    base.

Q3.  I have a high AC so why are the enemies still taking a ton off me?
A3.  Your AC is best described by your ability to avoid an attack. It really
    doesn't reflect how much damage is dealt. Damage is simply a "roll" after
    it is determined that you were hit. You might notice that even with an AC
    of 16, Lv1 monsters can still hit you for the same 4 HP as when you had
    an AC of 2. They just won't hit as often.

Q4.  Can I e-mail you with questions/help/ideas?
A4.  I will not lie and say that every e-mail will be replied to. This may be
    that you asked a stupid question that has been answered or I have deemed
    the current version the last and therefore history. Of course, any great
    and unique contribution will be added and credited whether be it an FAQ
    or game data.
