"You are the galaxy's most succesful Krypon-3 salesman. On the way to close
the biggest sale of your life, your brand new Nash Sombrero has blown a
capacitor in the reactor valve.
You exit the gravway and coast down into the wrong side of town. Now all you
need to do is find a phone and a repair sled will be on its way. The only
signs of life seem to be coming from a shoddy strucutre three doors down and
across the street.
Opening the door you make your way down a flight of debris-covered stairs.
Something loathsome scampers over your feet on its way to the activities
below. A shout of recognition is heard as whatever it was enters the
smoke-filled room.
You stumble into the room and suddenly it's as silent as the depths of space.
Several pairs of hostile eyes, and a few sets of three, challenge you to
enter.
The only thing that stands between you and the phone is eight galactic
misfits, an obsolete droid and a few "friendly" games of shufflepuck. Relax.
If you lose you'll earn their contempt. Win, and you'll their resentment."
If you have never played shuffleboard AKA air hockey, here is a short
description:
The aim of the game is, like in the arcade game, to hit the puck past the
opponent's paddle and smash the glass. The first player to get 15 points wins
the game.
The small squares on the board don't really mean anything, but note that you
can only move your puck inside the lower fourth area, whereas the opponent can
only move within the top fourth.
Controls:
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Move the cursor and paddle with the D-Pad. Hold down the B button to move
faster.
Each player takes turn at serving. You start out, however.
Press ENTER while playing to get to the options.
CONTINUE: Continue playing the current game.
NEW GAME: Restart against this opponent.
PADDLE CONTROL:
Paddle Size: Between 13 and 100. The size of your paddle.
Paddle Speed: Between 13 and 100. Speed of your paddle.
On Friction: Between 13 and 100.
On Reflection: Between 13 and 100.
Off Friction: Between 13 and 100.
Off Reflection: Between 13 and 80.
Paddle Set Up: Return to the default values.
BLOCKER CONTROL:
Blocker Size: Between 13 and 100. Size of the blocker.
Blocker Speed: Between 13 and 100. It only starts moving once it is
hit once.
The main screen features all the opponents waiting to be tackled as well as the
championship mode at the top right. Practice against opponents or go through
them one by one from easiest to hardest in Championship mode. If you lose at
any point of the tournament you get a passwords to restart from this opponent.
DC3 is a practice robot you can customized to be as easy or as difficult as the
you wish. Therefore it does not appear in the tournament. Check the options
in the previous section.
Skip Feeney:
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
It does not get any easier. He is perfect for getting used to the game's
controls and try out some of the different settings. Requires no strategy as
he never hits the puck back hard and often misses the easiest of returns. He
does, however, have a rather large paddle yet moves it around at random. Once
you get better you will hate him for wasting time on these low serves more
than his skills at playing.
Visine Orb:
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
This little guy is crazy and just erratically moves his paddle around. He does
have the most annoying sever behind Bejin though, as he hits from wall to wall
all the way into your area. You can easily score against him by going around
sides but be aware that if he does catch the puck by accident it will be
returns extremely fast. Expect to score at nearly all of your serves. This is
the last time you should be bouncing the puck off the side, as later opponents
will make life harder for you with those unpredictable returns off the wall as
well.
Vinnie the Dweeb:
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
This guy has an average paddle speed. His serve isn't a threat at all, but he
will return nearly every one of your hits at the same speed. A good step up
from the first two opponents and perhaps your first real game. Weak against
cross shots, that is if you did not fall asleep from before his serve arrived
at your side...
A green-coloured alien with huge eyes, who is only about 1.5 metres tall. He
is probably the most average player and even has a normal size paddle for that
reason. Try to return the puck via the wall as straight shots will get super
fast replies you may not be able to handle. He himself is not the greatest at
responding to the shots into the corners, so a good hard shot across his face
will smash his glass, don't bother with the walls.
The General:
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
He is an average player who will most likely give you long back and forth
hits. Fun to play with, good for practicing against without having becoming
frustrated. Overall he is not much better than Lexan, but supports a much better
serve which if you stay in the middle you should still reach easily. His
returns are mild, but once in a wile might surprise you with a smash down
the line. His average paddle speed still makes for a good outmaneuver on the
sides. The General is still surprisingly easy to beat.
Nerual Ttoille:
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Slow returns but positions his paddle very quickly. Gets frustrating but
endurance pays off as he simply relies on your mistakes. Make none and he
probably won't score, but it is much easier said than done. Nerual is probably
the hardest opponent in the game, but not impossible to beat. As long as you
keep your defense up he won't run away with points, but as you are required
to take risks this won't always be possible. By now, however, you should be
a good player and not bounce the puck off walls like a newbie. Aiming at those
tight corners is a must to beat him. Even though it looks like he will always
get there in time, he won't. Like I said, endurance is the key and this will
be a long bout for sure.
Princess Bejin:
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Well known for her serves throughout the galaxy. She will raise her hand and
teleport the puck to your side of the table, then smash it into one of the
corners. Your best bet here is to just choose one side and stay there, hoping
she will pick that one, too. Defeating her to-nil is extremely hard but other
than her server she is just a very good player with a small paddle, nothing
compared to Biff. One tactic that often works on your serve: serve straight
up and keep returning the puck in a straight line. It will pick up speed soon
and then it is your chance to angle that puck into a corner, it doesn't even
have to be a superb shot at this speed. Fail, however, and she'll return it
with hardly no chance for you to get there. By now you should have learned
that bouncing the puck on the sides just makes it harder for you in return,
so try to aim straight into corners.
Biff Raunch:
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Biff only has a tiny paddle, but he knows how to use it. His hits are the
fastest in the entire game but fortunately that also means you can reflect
them into his glass at ease if you manage to block them. Be vary of the
awesome force that is his serve, this game is over quick either way, hopefully
you have score 15 first.
There is a slightly cheap and repetitive tactic I have used one him a lot:
Serve right into the wall exactly half way at a moderate speed. The puck will
go to the top left side the screen. He will smash the puck down this side.
Position your paddle on the 3rd from the left which should return his smash
straight into his glass on the right side. It works nearly all the time. You
can also do this tactic in reverse of course, i.e. serve towards the left. If
you have learned this skill then that should guarantee you fifteen points
before he can reach it on his serve, not to mention some points you could have
scored on those with any luck. The previous tactics are pretty much thrown out
of the window.
Unfortunately the gameplay is made harsh by the slow moving puck. The fast
mode requires holding down the button at all times, which is extremely
annoying. Some enemies plain down cheat in their gaming style, obviously
a feature rather than give you a challenge. In single games the player has
many options to tweak the paddle and set up a blocker, making it easier to
defeat opponents or even make it more challenging if desired. These options
also enhance gameplay slightly as there are more ways to play the only eight
players. The problem lies with the tournament mode which does not offer
these options and the player is stuck with the default paddle and its slow
speed.
Graphics: 7/10
The story is a a little cheap but the game still feature nice characters. Each
player has an introduction of their own, but the shuffleboard screen is always
identical and the paddle could have had a few skins, as well as the opponents
only have very few expressions. And how about more opponents? Eight is not
nearly enough, they are not hard to draw and slapped together within minutes,
even back in 1990. Seeing that we can tweak the bot to "create" new enemies,
they could have done so as well, just with new graphics.
Sound: 6/10
The introduction sound is not too great and the bar sound gets boring. During
the games there is nothing but the puck sounds and it does get as boring as
playing pong. Every character has an introduction with different music, so you
cannot say they did not try to make the music fun. Smashing glass and
screeching scoring makes it less fun, however.
Overall: 6/10
It is a fun game and most players will want to try and beat the set of
opponents, or get frustrated trying at some stage. It is very difficult, too
difficult for many, and more game modes could have made this last longer as
well. If you like the game you may want to try and find the PC DOS version
with mouse support, much much better for controlling the paddle.
Domark and Pony Canyon Inc. for this game.
