1. INTRODUCTION
Seicross is a surprisingly fun game that somehow slipped through the cracks
of the NES FAQ Completion Project. You're on a futuristic motorcycle, and you
can push others out of the way as you try to rescue Petra People and pile up
power-ups and shoot random cool looking enemies. The more Petra People you
have, the more energy you can lose. Once you get to the finish line of a
level, you get your bonus for each person recovered and get to start over
again. The breadth and weirdness of the enemies makes this a fun game to play
even if you aren't terribly good at it. Or maybe while you're still hoping to
be good at it.
Seicross is also a port from an arcade game called Sector Zone. It is
reminiscent of Battle Zone for its green vector line graphics. But it's
really its own game. And from the manual(THANKS AtariHQ, and not for the
first time) you have three sub-stages--the obstacle zone, a slippery zone
where green marsh sends you skidding, and the Dinosaur Tank boss at the
end(on some levels.)
Unfortunately a lot of the terrain is repeated, and the enemies aren't really
mixed up, beyond the motor scooter guys that can be knocked off easily. So it
really becomes more of an exercise in memorizing what comes next. This game
was really exciting when I had no clue what I was doing, but once I started
picking it apart and finding cheats, I notice how repetitive the scenery and
monsters were. There's only one way to avoid each monster, and the levels
really do last too long. But while the variety is fresh, it's quite fun.
If you want to know the precise names of the enemies, check out:
http://www.atarihq.com/tsr/manuals/seicross.txt
I won't be covering that here. Instead I'll try to describe which enemy you
should shoot, which give power-ups, etc. The main one to watch for is the
Radar Buoy, which bounces up and down. Get the Power Star.
2. CONTROLS
The guy on your motorcycle is Gilgit. He has a wide range of motion here. You
can move almost all the way to the right as the screen scrolls left, or you
can stay in the back. The disadvantage of the first is that you can be
ambushed by an object, the second that you can be trapped by an object or
enemy fire or a combination of both.
A/B: shoots
START: pauses
SELECT: nothing, except on the opening screen(to 2 player zoone)
Shooting makes you lose energy. The more powerful shots you have, the more
energy you lose.
Where your sled can move is quantized--it can only move on the green
horizontal bits except when it moves vertically. This helps you navigate
tight squeezes. If you can't see a green horizontal bit, it'll probably kill
you to go that way--unless that green horizontal bit is just above a
blockading shape. Many mazes rely on you understanding this.

You can have a maximum of 24 Petra People on board at any one time.
3. STRATEGIES
Crashing into enemy bikes is fun but they often get in the way, so try to get
well ahead of or behind them.
If you get a power-up you can shoot through the round stones, but otherwise,
forget about it. They'll kill you.
It's always worthwhile to pick up energy. Even if it seems you are at the
maximum, you can in fact go above that. You start out at 0xc0=192 and can go
up to 0xff=255. Energy doesn't get you any points, but it can save you the
pain of having to avoid shooting something nice.
Petra People are not necessarily worthwhile to pick up. They get 100 points
followed by 1000 at the end of the level. There's no bonus for perfection,
and in fact there's a limit on the number that register, so unless you can
pick them up in succession(8 in a row net 8000 points,) I wouldn't bother
picking off one every so often.
Enemy scooters aren't worth killing when there is bigger game.
Try to keep in the middle of the screen. If you remember what is next, you
can cheat in the direction you need to. But sometimes you will need to head
up and down, with left, to pick up two items almost vertical from each other.
Be on the lookout for the bouncing Radar Buoy enemies which give you power-
ups. Once you have those, you can shoot over stones and can pretty much
destroy anything. But don't get careless.
When in doubt, play it safe, because if an enemy kills you, you lose all your
Petras and will have to pass the enemy again.
4. THE LEVELS
The game gets into a loop after level 6. It works as follows.
{ Levels 1-6 are original
{ Odd levels after 6 copy level 5
{ Even levels after 6 copy level 6(sometimes it is level 4--I think this is
random)
Therefore I count getting through level 6 as the equivalent of finishing.
In these levels there is no official threshold for how well you have to do.
I'll just try and describe the best way through, to maximize the points,
assuming you don't get killed.
Level 1
You can get energy and a Petra Person right away. Then stay just a bit above
center and wait for a telescope to blast for increased power, then get the
star from it. I'd move down here to be in position to shoot down a telescope
and get a Petra Person. Otherwise above you just get a Petra Person.
Go along the top and get a Petra Person with energy just below. There'll be a
telescope just after. Then there will be an energy line at the top. Shoot the
bottom bit and then the dinosaur. Shoot it a bunch and move up as you do to
get the thing that emanates from it. Go along the top for another telescope.
Now go to the center and you can shoot a Dinosaur, and there's one below it.
Blasting the two together gets you 10000 potential points, vs the 1000
potential for the Petra Person above.
You'll have two energy hexagons at the bottom, a telescope in the center, and
then 4 petra people slowly descending to the bottom in a straight line.
There'll be a Petra Person in the center, then up a bit for energy and up to
the top for a person.
Then you have energy and a telescope just above center, then another
telescope in the center. There's one just below center, then a hexagon right
after and a hexagon above soon after. A dinosaur is in the center past some
barriers. You will have a Petra Person between two hexagons--try and get the
lower of the two--and there's a telescope at the very bottom. Then there are
3 energy hexagons coming up, but you can only get 2--stay at the top.
A Petra Person will be in the center, then a telescope just above. Then
another red force field with a dinosaur behind it on top. Go forward for
energy just below center and then a Petra Person at the top. If you can work
it to the telescope coming up at the bottom, great, but if not, just get the
energy and the Petra Person. Now you'll have to zigzag around obstacles to
get all the Petra People next, but it is not worth it. Stay just above or
below. There'll be 3 energy hexagons but you can only get two. You then get
to the swampy bits where your vehicle can slip.
Now you get two energy hexagons, but push ahead so you can get one petra
person and go DL for the other. Then go up and blast through for three more.
There's a telescope behind you, then the level ends.
Level 2
Shoot the bleeper thing with a sweeping move up, then go up and back down to
get the first Petra Person and some energy. Then up for another energy. You
should stay ahead here as you can. Gun down the telescopes--don't go to the
back to do so as the bleeper things will shoot at you. Past the second are
two Petra People.
Shoot the towers and go between the triangles for another Petra Person and
then go to the top so you can blast the wall of 5 enemies as you go down. Get
the energy. There'll be a bouncing enemy(radar buoy) that is not hard to pick
up. It gives some cool firepower. You can get a sword from the sponge at the
top beforehand. Blast through the next two triangles and be prepared to go up
and back down a bit but still above the center. Another two Petra People will
be just above center, and then you'll want to go down and get energy. Past
the triangles, a Petra Person you'll have to go forward for, then loop around
the obstacles for an energy hexagon. Head D-R for another.
Note you can blast a pyramid inside a triangle for big points. A plant at the
top hides sneakers(3000 points) and then you must blast through two more
triangles. A Petra Person is in the center. There's something behind the
green sponge above, but you may wish to get the energy below instead. Watch
out for the volcano above. You shouldn't need to shoot telescopes now, so get
the energy at the bottom.
Go up and UL then back DR and UR and now you have to go really far forward if
you want to circle back and get the Petra Person in the inlet. The next two
are easy. Shoot the enemies to get the energy--another 3000 pointer behind
that--then go along the bottom for another Petra Person, past some green
clumps. Be going forward here, because if you've got the firepower, you can
shoot the circle at the bottom, loop around, and get an extra life.
Advance so you can zigzag DL to be sure of the next Petra Person and you may
have to move backwards and forward along the bottom to escape the fire. Then
you'll be in a U past a dinosaur--you may be able to get the energy below
after shooting the dinosaur, or you may need the energy instead. Then go to
the top and get a Petra Person and energy. You should have super firepower
here, so if you want, get the dinosaur, but you need to focus on the phalanx
of 4 enemies, then dip down for another Petra Person and then back up, moving
forward. Blast the guardian between the triangles, and there's more mazy bits
with energy and Petra People. Stay forward to shoot the telescope so you can
loop back if need be. The tricky guardians are worth avoiding. Plus you want
to stay on top to blast the pyramid.
You can loop back past the obstacle for the two Petra People and then there
are a bunch of energy hexagons and a telescope(center, up, right, down, back
left) and past another triangle pair is the swampy bit. Blast away at the top
first. Two enemies here, with a hexagon at the bottom then a Petra Person.
Then a telescope at the top, energy in the middle, then down, then a Petra
Person then two at the top.
Level 3
This one is much faster. I stayed in the center til I saw a lump and a petra
person at the bottom, then I grabbed it and went back to the center. Plenty
of chances to bulk up on energy early on here with not a lot to shoot. After
a grey barrier in the middle and two energy hexagons, move up a bit to
destroy a red force field then a dinosaur.
A Petra Person is behind another barrier, then energy. Grab two energies on
the bottom and move up for a dinosaur. Keep the center and, if you have the
firepower, blast the grey bit in the center as 10000-point guys come out. A
Petra Person will be just below followed by energy, then energy at the
bottom. Then Petra People on a zigzag up. Then a dinosaur just below center.
Stay just above center for two more energy hexagons.
You can get two Petra People past a telescope on top, as you probably don't
need the energy. Past a guarded circle is another radar buoy, so you may want
to go forward here to have a better shot at killing it if you lost the
original power-up. A telescope's near the bottom, then a Petra Person then a
hexagon just above that.
Past two energy hexagons, a dinosaur in the center then a dinosaur just
above. Energy near the bottom, then a Petra Person. Stick to the bottom til
you see a Petra Person behind the blue craters. A dinosaur will be in the
center past a force field. Then one will be above center, with an energy
hexagon behind. Another will be behind that but it is risky to get and you
probably have enough.
There'll be an energy hexagon past a row of mountains in the center. Then go
below for a Petra Person and you probably won't be able to zigzag for them
unless you're far ahead. So just get an energy hexagon at the end of it.
Now blast through the guardians between the triangles to the swampy bits.
Start up and go down. Get the bottom hexagon and be firing away--try to go
forward here so you can swoop down and get the sword and the two petra
people. Then go UR back to the center for a hexagon, then blow away the
guards to get the three Petra People below. A telescope is at the top near
the end but it isn't terribly important.
Level 4
Back to slow. You get a petra person and an energy hexagon right away, then
you can move down for another petra person. I'd keep to the lower zigzags
here as the second of the sponges hides an extra life. Keep on the bottom
some more for a telescope and then two petra people. There'll be energy in
the above center, then the center. Then there is a radar buoy behind two
triangle guardians, then a bunch of sponges. Just make it through, getting
the buoy if you need it--the best way is to shoot the pyramid below the
plants and loop around.
Get the petra person at the bottom. There'll be one in the center and energy
above, but you may not need/want the energy with the annoying volcano. Go
forward for a center petra person and, if you can, DL for another--or UL. You
can't seem to get them both, so DL looks best, as yu get energy and can move
forward and go UL for another person. Fire at the tower in the center.
There'll be a dinosaur past it, above the orange/blue/green dunes. Then a
Petra Person above, and go forward and loop for another. Shoot the lower part
of the red field then the dinosaur, then climb up. Go to the top and shoot,
then dip down if you can for a Petra Person, then blast the dinosaur at the
top. It is worth more than one Petra Person. Now you will want to sneak along
the top to fire at the pyramid there as it releases 10000 point wisps. You'll
probably miss some Petra People but the point tradeoff is worth it. If you go
down and back up you can get energy.
Past a telescope/pyramid on top there is a dinosaur in the center. Then
another after a barrier. Then two triangles with a red force barrier. Shoot
it to get the two petra people behind it. Loop forward around an obstacle for
one petra person then go UL. You can get two energy hexagons just above and
then blast through the triangle-pair.
The top sponge of the three past the telescope gets you a timer. Then there
are two telescopes. Then come the dinosaurs. They are at the bottom, then the
top, then the center, after which you have a Petra Person. The pattern
repeats, then there are two Petra People at the top. You should go forward
here after getting them and fire away to make the boss fight a lot easier.
There'll be another big attack dog, then a petra person on the bottom then
the top. If you haven't gone at leat half forward it'll be tough to get both.
There'll be energy in the center then a final Petra Person up top.
Level 5
This is a pretty quick level that doesn't have a ton of power-ups. I just
stayed in the center here, with energy/petra then dipping down for a second
petra person then going a bit above for a telescope and energy hexagon.
Forward for another, then dip down and left. Staying low gets two more. You
can blast the red field for a dinosaur, then maybe blast another one for a
petra person.
Why maybe? You'll want to move forward for the second field if you don't have
super shots, as a radar buoy is behind that. It might be better to go along
the bottom for the radar buoy power-up anyway. More energy along the bottom,
then go up, kill the force field and dinosaur, and take out a telescope. KEep
a bit low for a Petra Person, then go along the bottom for more energy. Hit
the center when you see a telescope on top, then you can sweep down for a
chain of four Petra People. Go back up, shoot the dinosaur, and get the
energy just above center.
Then go forward staying in the center. There are two Petra People here. Get
them if you want and loop back up, or go up immediately and shoot the
guardian. You get a free life if you collect the carcass. More along the top,
then go down for the dinosaur after a twirling circle. A dinosaur is a bit
further down. Past a + on the bottom you have a Petra Person, then you can go
U/UL a bit for energy and another petra person. Keep above center for a
while, and shoot down the red force field then one of the dinosaurs. Another
dinosaur will be above, then fire at one in the center then a telescope. Two
Petra People will appear in the lower bits, and if you keep ahead you'll see
two energy hexagons--you can only get one but you can go UL for a Petra
Person. Then there are triangle guardians before the swamp.
Go down and fire away--the top guardian has a sword. Keep on the bottom to
shoot more enemies, get more people, and shoot a telescope. The end is just
ahead.
Level 6
A slow level with a bit of a maze. I won't bother with enemies you can't kill
or that give no rewards. Run past the triangles and get whatever there is
with energy and petra people. Go thorugh the center for another petra person
then get the energy hexagon below. You need to pull back/move forward to
avoid enemy fire a lot here, and then there'll be a Petra Person in an upper
right crack. Sneak through it, then move down and up and down to hit two
telescopes. You will need to go to the bottom and loop around up for a Petra
Person, then move forward into space to blast the triangle-pair guardians.
Past the first triangle-pair is a radar buoy that lets you blast past the
next one. Stay below center if possible to avoid the sentinels above. When
you see a blue tower, go above it or you will wind up in a potential dead
end. Shoot the next blue tower. Then take the lower path to hit a dinosaur.
Sneak through the center for a Petra Person, then get another and go up to
hit the Dinosaur behind the red field. You have another tricky move to get a
Petra Person, then go forward at the bottom for an energy hexagon and don't
get the Petra Person above here--go UR and hit the dinosaur. Shoot the lower
sponge out of the way and then go up the bottom path to hit the telescope and
dinosaur and sneak past the energy hexagon.
You'll want to go up through the center again after some narrow squeaks in
order to get another dinosaur and shoot the guardian below. Then move forward
to pull back for a petra person and a dinosaur. Keep along the top but move
left/right to juke the sentinel there. Shoot the top guardian at the
triangles then shoot the gap.
There'll be some more gaps to handle then a bunch of sponges. Fire away as
you go up. You may be able to dislodge a shoe from the 2nd-top sponge by the
telescope. There'll be two energy hexagons, one above another, then the
guardian triangles before the swamp.
Shooting the bottom of the triangles guarding the swamp gets you the big
bonus tries. The dinosaur enemies come in down, up, center, down, up, center.
You can stay in the center and pick off petra people and energy as needed.
Then you have two boss enemies.
Subsequent levels will have
****END OF WALKTHROUGH****
If you get 30 or more Petra People in a level, you are invisible and
invincible for the next bit. Be sure to have firepower if you want to rack up
any more points, though, as you cannot pick anything up. You can, however, go
off the screen each way. I'd count this as a win, though the denouement is
pretty boring.
5. CHEATS
Hex cheats:
0x64 = # of petra people
0x78 = energy(starts at c0=192, maximum fe)
0x503 = the level counter though it does not affect what is on the game
proper. In other words, if you freeze this at 0x00(level 1) you'll still wind
up on level 2 on restart. You just won't get the GET TO PET message after
level 6.
0x608-0x60c = high score
608=hundreds, 609=thousands, 60a=ten thousands, 60b=hundred thousands,
60c=millions
0x610-0x614 = high score
610=hundreds, 611=thousands, 612=ten thousands, 613=hundred thousands,
614=millions
0x615 = # of lives. Interestingly, if you cheat them way up, the game shows
them in hexadecimal. Lose one after 10, and you go to 0f.
There are some good controller cheats at honestgamers.com. So go look them
up. They tell how to start on various levels. Here they are in detail.
INVINCIBILITY
Hold Controller 2: Left, A, B
Controller 1: U U D D Start
This starts the game, and you'll be able to run through things. If that
doesn't work, just reset the cart and try again.
By the way you can plow into a sponge on invincibility mode to pile up points
and lives really quickly.
STAGE SELECT
Hold controller 2: Select, A, B
Controller 1: A (level 2)
Controller 2: B (level 3)
Controller 3: A, B (level 4)
Controller 4: B, B (level 5)
Controller 5: B, B, A (level 6)
