This walkthrough came to being when I brought this game out of retirement in
June of 2002.  I had not played in a couple of years, and decided to see how
much money I could win by the end of the summer.  Hear I was in early July,
and I had reached a couple million dollars, and I grew bored.  While posting
on GameFAQs, I realized that this game had no FAQ for it, so hear I am.

I dedicate this walktrhough to my girlfriend Jen Dixon.  Without her faked
interest in my games, I would not have nearly as much fun.  Jen I love you,
and I look forward to continuing on with you (much like my love affair with
gaming).

Also, for Cougar.  I miss you, and I hope you are living it up in the
afterlife as you did in this world.  You will always be in my memories, and
you will never be forgotten.

------------------------------Introduction----------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

This game was released in the summer of 1991, and was a truly great gaming
experience.  The main character is Mario, and his goal is to increase his
skills to move up in the rankings of the world's best golfers, and to reach
$1 million in winnings.  It is a tough game to learn, and even tougher to
master.  This is easily the best golf game ever released on the NES, and
this guide will help the new player through some of the tough spots that can
be encountered.

-------------------------------Club Selection-------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

3) One of the most important things to decide before you seriously get
involved in NES Open Golf play modes is to choose 14 clubs for your bag.
Sounds easy enough, but you choose from sixteen clubs total.  The
general idea is to leave behind one of the woods, and one of the irons.
Before you decide on which club to leave behind, view the following topic
to get a better understanding of club distance and trajectory.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------Club Stats----------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

4) There are three important things to consider when selecting a club: swing
speed, distance to target, and trajectory line.

- The following are the numerical run down of all the clubs swing speeds:

            __________ ____________ ____________ ____________
           |   Club   |    Slow    |     Med    |    Fast    |
           |__________|____________|____________|____________|
           |1 Wood    |     234    |     260    |     286    |
           |2 Wood    |     216    |     240    |     264    |
           |3 Wood    |     207    |     230    |     253    |
           |4 Wood    |     198    |     220    |     242    |
           |1 Iron    |     189    |     210    |     231    |
           |2 Iron    |     180    |     200    |     220    |
           |3 Iron    |     171    |     190    |     209    |
           |4 Iron    |     162    |     180    |     198    |
           |5 Iron    |     153    |     170    |     187    |
           |6 Iron    |     144    |     160    |     176    |
           |7 Iron    |     135    |     150    |     165    |
           |8 Iron    |     126    |     140    |     154    |
           |9 Iron    |     117    |     130    |     143    |
           |P. Wedge  |     108    |     120    |     132    |
           |S. Wedge  |      99    |     110    |     121    |
           |__________|____________|____________|____________|

-trajectory of clubs differs as you move down through the clubs.  Woods and
the 1 through 3 iron have lower trajectories, 4 thorugh 6 irons have
middle trajectories, and 7 through Sand Wedge have high trajectories.
This usually will not affect a persons club selection, but if an obstacle
(like a tree) impedes the way, a different club may be required.

-Swing speed also affects trajectory.  Fast swings result in a higher flying
ball, Med Swings a little less high, and Slow swings result in lower
trajectory balls.

-Swing speed will affect how the ball moves as well.  Fast swings will have
a ball moving rapidly.  Med swings will have a slightly slower ball
movement, and of course Slow swings will have a very slow ball movement.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------Swing Basics--------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

5) This section will look at taking a swing itself, breaking down what the
  meter actually means.

                               o-----------o
                               | The Meter |
                               o-----------o

This device is now to control how far a ball will travel as well as how
hooked, sliced, or straight the ball will fly.  The following below is a
reasonable representation of it:

                ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

                                         ^

The arrow points to the perfect sweet spot on the meter for hitting the ball
perfectly straight.  When you are attempting to hit an Iron, the main sweet
spot is enlarged, but the straighter than straight spot is still this one
tick of the meter.

                              o-----------o
                              | Mechanics |
                              o-----------o

 i) When you are ready to swing, the arrow begins at the sweet spot.

ii) When you press the A Button, the arrow will move towards the left end
of the meter.  Press the A Button a second time at the point on the
meter you wish to gain the desired distance on the swing (closer to the
left side, the more power it will have set).

iii) Now the arrow will begin to slide back to the right, heading towards
the original starting point.  Most times, you will be trying to hit the
ball straight (see Advanced techniques for mroe details on this), so
press the A Button for a third time around the white tick (the sweet
spot that sends it straight), to hit the ball.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
----------------------------Advanced Techniques-----------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

6) This section will review a few techniques that can be used to get a
player out of trouble, but these are usually quite difficult to pull off.
These should only be attempted once a player has played enough to
understand what technique should be used where, and how to go about it.

 i) The use of spin on the ball can be quite useful to make shots more
accurate than normal.  The use of back spin ensures a ball will stay
fairly near to the impact spot of the ball.  Top spin can give the ball
a little more jump for when it first lands (useful for rolling the ball
on a green for example).  These spins are useful, but they change how a
    shot should be approached.

ii) The use of high/low trajectory will also cause effects similiar to
top/back spin.  If used in conjunction with each other, it can make for
a very fast, low moving ball, or a slow moving high ball that will go
    backwards from the impact zone.

iii) Using a hook/slice purposely is an excellent technique for off-setting
a strong wind, using a strong wind to hit the ball even further, and
to hit around a tree that is impeding your line to the green.

iv) If the wind is coming from the left, then the player should use a hook
to counter the wind.  If the wind comes from the right, then the player
should use a slice to counter the wind.  The ratio of tics on the swing
bar is about 1.25 tic to 2 MPH wind.  Remember to take into account any
aim corrections you may have made before swinging.

 v) A player can also take advantage of a wind that will push their ball
farther than the norm by using a hook/slice.  The best example is if a
wind direction is blowing North-East, a player should aim straight
above and hit a large slice (this will require some experimentation),
and if it is done correctly the player will end up much closer to the
hole than if they used a normal, straight shot.  This is the most
difficult of the advanced techniques to master, and it will frustrate
    most people at first.

vi) When a player makes a poor shot into a tree, they often no longer have
a clean, straight shot to the green.  This means the player will have
to hit their next shot away from the green, and then have to chip on,
right?  Actually, a player can still make the green despite the
obstruction.  To do this, a player must aim around a tree, and if the
aim is to the left of the green, then a major slice must be used. If
the aim is to the right of the green, then a major hook must be used.
Also, when using this technique, a player will generally have to
increase the distance (so go up at least one club).  Also, the lie of
your ball has to be taken into account as well.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------Rank Promotion---------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

7) You begin the game as a... well, a Beginner.  This can be changed by
playing 2 good rounds of golf.  If you have played well enough, your
character will be offered the chance to move to the next level.  The
  order of player rank is:

  Beginner => Amateur => Semi-Professional => Professional.

The easiest way to ascertain your rank is to look at the small sign on
  the title screen.

  B = Beginner, A = Amateur, SP = Semi-Professional, P = Professional.

Why is rank so important you say?  It is the determining factor in how
much money you receive in tournaments, match play, and contests.  The
higher the rank you are, the higher the amounts of money up for grabs.
Consequently, the higher your rank, the tougher the competition will be
  as well.

Please remember you must play Stroke Play (not in a tournament) to be
eligible to be promoted in rank (usually requiring two 18 Hole Rounds to
become eligible to play in the next highest class).

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
----------------------------------Match Play--------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

8) Match Play is when a player faces an opponent in a direct head-to-head
match.  However, it does not go by the total number of strokes in the
golf game played.  It is dependent on who wins more holes.  To win a hole
a player must score lower than their opposition.  The player who wins
  more holes wins.

You work your way through the players from Luigi to Steve, to Mark to
Tony to Billy.  Also, your rank determines who you play in Bet On 1 Hole
  mode:

  Beginner==========> Tony
  Amateur===========> Mark
  Semi-Professional=> Tony
  Professional======> Billy

Match play can call for a change in your strategy for a hole.  Your
opponent may have already made the green, and you need to get there in
one, so you may risk a hazard when you normally would not, you may be
lower in score for the hole, so you can play a safe shot to set-up an
easier shot for the win, or you may have made a bad shot so you need to
get back on track fast.  It takes experience to know when to be
aggressive, and when to be conservative.  It is best to play conservative
until an opportunity presents itself for you to jump into the lead on a
hole, taking home the big prize/hole.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------Course Descriptions----------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

9) This section will list the par, yards, and a general course description.
Also, each course will be ranked in terms of difficulty.

The handicap stat indicates how hard a hole is.  The lower the number,
  the harder the hole.

-The U.S. Course can be considered the beginner course.  It contains a
little bit of everything that this game has to offer.  It generally has
shorter holes, but it contains the longest hole in the game.  It contains
very little water, but it has a very nasty par 3 water hazard.  It contains
fairly uniform green slopes, but it does have a few nasty slopes to contend
with.  This is definately the easiest of the three courses in this game.

-The Japan Course is the middle of the road course in terms of difficulty.
This course has water on nearly every hole, and in many it is a direct
hazard to your ball as you move towards the green.  Also, this course has
the largest sand trap in the game on hole 14.  This course requires a
player to have accurate aim to score well.

-This course ranks just ahead of the Japan Course in difficulty, and the
main reason for this is the more effective placement of sand/water hazards,
narrower fairways, and small target zones.  This course is the greatest
challenge in the game, and even a pro at the game will still be challenged,
playing it again and again.

10)This section will have a strategy that will help get lower scores on
every hole.  The suggested club is for tee-off only, and the rest of the
club choice is  dependent upon where a ball is (and I can not predict
every single situation that can arise).  Also, a map of every green to
  help visualize the strategies.

                               o--------o

  Suggested Club => 1 Wood

Hole 1 is a very straightforward hole.  The fairway starts directly above
the player, and although there is both a sand trap and a water hazard,
there is very little threat from either.  If there is a wind at your
back, it is possible to make the green in one shot.  The green itself is
  generally sloped left to right.

This green is relatively to put on since it has only one general
direction of arrows to putt on.  This hole is a very easy hole, and is
one of the easiest par 4's to eagle.

Hole 2 is a short Par 5, that is protected from easy access by a large
water hazard.  The general idea is to aim for the large patch of fairway
on the right.  From there, a player should then try to fly there ball
onto the green.  This will mean the player has an eagle putt on a green
that once again slopes one direction: this time top-right to lower-left.

A fairly difficult green to putt on, simply because of the very strong

Hole 3 has a lot of trees between the tee and the green.  Luckily, the
fairway is to the right, and is fairly large so it is easy to hit.  An
alternate strategy that I utilize is to hit right up the middle over all
of the trees.  This means it is a very short distance to the green
(easier approach shot), but for this to be so easy, one must clear all of
the trees.  If a player has gone to the fairway, it is still a relatively
easy iron shot onto the green.  This id the first green to feature
  different directions for slope.

If your approach shot is not very good, then this will be a tough green

slope is not very strong meaning an easier putt.  Still, it is a
   relatively easy hole.

As a general rule for par 3's, i try to get the most accurate club I can.
This means on shorter par 3's using a slow swing (like this one), med
swing for slightly longer holes, and fast swing far longest par 3 holes.
So, to decide which slow swing club to use, one must first look at the
distance to the hole, as well as the wind.  After making proper
adjustments, you should land on the green.  This green is a bowl green,
which means it slopes inward, with the exception of the bottom right,
  which slants pff the green.

Hole 5 is another hole that requires a player to aim over a large patch
of rough to get to the large area of fairway.  After the tee shot, a
player usually only require a rather short iron shot to the green, but
the sand trap can pose some problems.  To get around it, the best bet is
to move up one club form the suggested, hold down as you swing (to make a
high shot), and the ball will land on the green and not bounce off.  The
green itself sloped from the back to the front.

Hole 6 biggest challenge is the river that runs through the middle of the
hole.  It is close enough that it can be cleared with a strong tee shot,
but the real danger it presents is when it is coupled with a headwind.
There are two main strategies to this hole: A friendly wind means the
player can try to go straight at the green, or the safer method of aiming
towards (or to the left) of the two trees on the fairway.  The straight
on shot works best with a tailwind or no headwind whatsoever.  Otherwise,
it is best to play it safe and hit to the right.  Then it is a matter of
using your irons to knock the ball onto the green to set-up the birdie
  putt.

The slope running towards the back of the green is very strong, and

The club selection will mainly depend if the pin is hidden behind the

roll is required.  If the line to the pin is unimpeded, a player may

Hole 8 has it's share of hazards, and this is why it is ranked as the
hardest U.S. Course hole.  When teeing off, as is the usual, check the
wind, and aim your shot accordingly.  Keep in mind you MUST make the
fairway if you want to have a shot at making the green in two so you will
get the eagle putt.  Be very wary of the OB that is all around the rough
because if you hit in there you get penalized a stroke AND have to tee
off again.  If you have made the fairway, you have two choices: go for
the green or lay-up onto the land between the two creeks.  If you landed
in the rough, you should stil be able to make the small land between the
two creeks.  Then it is a simple matter of an approach iron onto the
green.  This green also flows from front to back, but it is a much
  steeper grade of slope.

A strong putt will be required if your ball is far from the hole, and
more than likely you will need to make serius adjustments to your aim to
have a chance of making the putt.  When this evil slope is combined with

Hole 9 is a par 4 that has no paticularly bad situations near the
fairway, but if you go off into the rough, this hole becomes a very nasty
hole very quickly.  The tee off will more than likely end up between
pieces of fairway, but that is not a problem.  The approach shot is up to
the player, so I suggest whatever makes them the most comfortable.  This
is a fairly easy green to get to in two shots meaning many birdie
  opportunities.

Hole 11 is a par 4 that has the challenge of where are you going to aim
for.  There is a lot of fairway, but if a player is bold, and goes to put
the ball as close as they can to the green, they risk going out of
bounds.  The wind should be the deciding fator on where you hit, but if
you doubt your ability to hit the fairway, then aim to a safer position.
From there it is the usual iron approach shot to the green.  This green
sloped towards the middle from both the front and the back.

This hole is listed at 642 yards, but when you first enter it will say
430 to 450 yeards to the green.   The original measurement is taken if
you went down the midle of the fairway.  The actual number for this
strategy falls somewhere in between these numbers (around 500-550 yards).
Hit towards the left, and try to cut as much of the OB, but still make
the fairway.  This will mean that with a well hit 1 Wood, you can make
green in two.  This is very hard to do, and usually requires some help
from the wind to happen.  In most cases, it will take at least 3 shots to
reach the green.  This green slopes to the front and back from the
  middle.

  green is another bowl green.

The usual bowl green scenario here.  Hopefully you are close enough to

Aim for the end of the fairway, and let 'er rip.  If you hit it well
enough, you will be in good shape for the approach to the green.  Even if
you are in the rough, it will still be a pretty easy matter to get on in
two for the birdie putt.  This is the first truly confusing green on this
course in terms of wild slope variations.

This is a hole where controlling your approach shot is extremely imortant

You can try to fly the trees to make the fairway on the right to set-up a
better second shot, or you can play a safe first shot by hitting
straight up the left fairway.  The second shot can be put on the green by
any method the player likes because of the lack of green protection by
hazards.  The green itself slopes from the back to the front and the
  sides.

You may need to increase/decrease the club distance because of wind, but
otherwise these are the clubs to use for teeing off.  This is without a
doubt, the hardest par 3 on the U.S. Course.  The large water hazard
requires a player to fly the ball a long way, and stil keep the ball on
the green (this is very difficult).  When a player actually gets the ball
on the green they will be happy to see a relatively flat green (slight
  bowl).

The slope is very gentle, and this makes putting a breeze when compared
to the nasty greens that have been plaguing this course in the last few
holes.  If your tee shot goes well, you should do no worse than a par,

evil hole, possible the toughest par 3 of all 3 courses in the game.

Hole 18 is a good finishing hole for this well rounded Course because it

tee shot, aim for the tree in the middle of the fairway.  Then, if you
are close enough to the green, you can risk the water hazard, and go for
the green in two.  Otherwise, you will lay-up short on the fairway, and
then use an iron approach to get on in three.  This green has three
  different slopes to contend with.

Hole 1 is a relatively easy welcome to Japan.  Aim over the bunker in the
left rough, and if you hit it full, you wil clear it.  This will set-up
the wide open look at the hole, so the easy approach will happen.  If a
player goes more left, they have to contend with a stand of trees in the
right rough.  The green has a plateau in the middle, and slopes to the
  back-left, and the front-right.

Hole 2 is a difficult hole before the wind is taken into consideration.
It is a fairly long way to cross the river, and the fairway is very
narrow as the fairway moves toward the hole.  An advanced strategy for
lowering the distance to the green for your second shot without the trees
being in the way is to use a slight slice when you aim at those same
trees.  This of course will put you on the right of the fairway, with a
much better view of the green.  The green has a rapidly changing slope,
  that is quite challneging.

If the ball is on the same slope, the putt will be relatively easy.
Also, if the ball is on the same line of arrows (even if it crosses a

The best way to make the fairway is to aim at the two trees on the
fairway.  If a player hit a good ball, they will be able to try for the
green in two.  However, to do this, the player must be close enough to
fly the ball to the ball alomst 80% of the way there, and avoid the two
sand traps.  Otherwise, the player must lay-up short of the water, and
then hit on in three.  This green is nearly one big slant from the
  front-right to the back-left.

Hole 5 is a shorter par 4, and it is fairly easy to make the green in two
if a player can avoid getting stuck in the trees (fairway and rough).
The trick is to aim just left of the bunker in the right rough, and hit
it between the fairway trees #2 and #3 (numbered from left to right).
Then a player must fly a ball to the green since their is a large sand
trap protecting against roll ons to much of the green.  Being too long
on an approach can lead to trouble with another bunker.  The green slopes
toward the middle, and the slope is stronger on the right side.

This is the second par 3 in three holes, so it will be the last one till

fairway goes right to the green, there are no hazards to block the way,

This is the second par 5 in three holes, so it will be the last one till

that is on the fairway.  When done properly, a player is about 230 to 260

  confusing tangle of multi-slopes.

The slope of this green is not too strong, and the patches of slopes are
large enough to figure out they will effect your ball a little easier
than the last hole.  A birdie is quite possible, but a par much more
  likely.

This is possible the hardest par 4 in the game because of the hazards
that directly block the best routes to the green, the narrow fairway, and
the strongly sloped green.  For tee-off, aim to the right of the fairway
tree, and hopefully you can stay on the fairway, and out of the rough, or
even worse, the OB.  Then, it is a simple matter of a good approach shot
to get close to the pin.  The green has two main slopes that flow to the
  middle of the green.

If a player has had the luck (yes luck, not skill) to get near the pin,
then a birdie can be had.  The farther away, and the chances lessen.
This is also dependent on how well the original tee shot went because a
poor tee shot means at least three strokes gone when getting to the
green.  This adds up to one tough hole, that a player should be happy to
  get par on.

                               | Hole 10 |
                               o---------o

  Suggested Club => 1 Wood

Hole 10 is a big slide towards easy after the brutal last hole.  Aim over
the trees in the left rough, and the ball should easily make the fairway.
This will make for an easy approach to the green, with no hazards to
block the way.  The green Has a continual flow from front to back, with
  only left/right directional changes.

Provided the approach shot is closer to the middle of the green, and not
on the fringes, then a birdie/par result is almost assured.  Even if the
ball is on the steeper slope on the edge of the greens, it is still quite
possible to get a par or better result.

Hole 11 is a decent challenge to make and remain on the fairway, but the
rough is not thick, so it is not a priority to make the fairway.  A
rather easy approach shot because of the lack of hazards, and the clearly
  segregated slopes of the green.

Hole 12 breaks the long line of par 4's with the first par 5 of the back
nine.  A shorter par 5, it allows for many "on in 2" opportunities, but
only those who weild an accurate approach shot.  Aim for the right part
of the fairway that slowly narrows towards a fairway tree.  Then a player
needs to make a very accurate shot between two bunkers, or try to fly to
and stay on the green.  If not on, then chip on.  The green slopes left
to right, and is a viciously strong slope.

The strong slopes make it very difficult to one putt, and even two putts
can be hard to do.  This is a hole that is short, but the tough
conditions around the green (three bunkers), and on it (strong slopes),
can wreak havoc on your stroke count.

Hole 13 is a short par 3 that has easy access to the green.  The

simple chip.  The green has two different slopes, and it is a large
  green.

Hole 17 is a par 4 with two fairways divided by a large body of water.
Unless the wind is really strong, a player should try to go over the
water to the right fairway to set-up an easier approach shot.  Aim

After hitting on, the green slopes right to left, and a little bit front
  to back.

Hole 18 is a very long par 5 that is incredibly hard to get to the green
in two unless wind conditions are favourible.  Aim for the left fairway,
and the best place for the ball to go is a little left of the trees in
the rough.  Then it is a long distance to the green, and depending on
the situation go for the green or aim for patch of fairway near the
green.  It will usually take three shots (at least) to get on the green.
The green itself is rather small, and it contains some quick changing
  slope directions.

Hole 3 is a par 5, and aim your tee shot over the OB so the ball will end

long iron/short wood to the green.  The only problem is if you make the

is the large water hazard in the way.  The green slopes left and right

green is sloped from front to back, and it converges in the middle back.

A short par 4 with a large water hazrad between the tee and the green.
The usual tee off willbe aiming a little left so the ball will make the
fairway, but if there is a large wind at your back (say 6-9 mph), then
hit the ball full at the green because you can make the green in ONE shot
to get an eagle putt.  The green itself has four different slopes, and
the rapid change of direction can make putting incredibly difficult.

area.  You have 2 options: one is to try to drive between the bunkers, or
to hit up between the left rough, and the left most pot bunker.  If you
have made and stayed on the fairway, then go fot he green in two.
Otherwise, you must lay-up short of the creek, and then hit on.  The
green slopes in three different directions.

------------------------------Sources Of Money------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

13)As you know, the goal is to reach $1 million.  This guide will now list
all the primary ways to recieve money, followed by the secondary (in
  tournaments) ways of making money.

                           o-----------------o
                           | Primary Methods |
                           o-----------------o

======================
Stroke Play Tournament
======================

The better you place, the more money you receive.  The increments of money
decrease quite rapidly as you move away from the top three places.  Remember
that the higher your standing (from Beginner to Professional) will influence
the prize money for every place.

========================
Match Play (competitive)
========================

As you work your way through your opponents, you are eligible for more and
more money.  Remember that the higher your standing (from Beginner to
Professional) will influence the prize money for every place.

=============
Bet On 1 Hole
=============

Tthe increments start small, but will reach fairly high levels, provided
you never loses a hole.  Remember that the higher your standing (from
Beginner to Professional) will influence the prize money for every hole
that you bet on.

                          o-------------------o

======================
Longest Drive Contests
======================

These give small amounts of extra money.  Remember that the higher your
standing (from Beginner to Professional) will influence the prize money for
the three flags you can choose to putt at.

===========================
Closest To The Pin Contests
===========================

These give moderate amounts of money.  Remember that the higher your
standing (from Beginner to Professional) will influence the prize money for
the three flags you can choose to putt at.

===========
Hole-In-One
==========

Whenever a player achieves one of these, the player is eligible for a fairly
large cash gift as a reward.  Remember that the higher your standing (from
Beginner to Professional) will influence the prize money for the three flags
you can choose to putt at.

-------------------------Closest To Pin Strategies--------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

14)A fairly dificult contest to win regularly, but this is the reason it
has higher increments of prize money than Longest Drive.  This section
will look at a few methods of ball control to get more accurate shots.

As is the usual, proper club selection is a must to win.  Normally, a
suggested club will be sufficient.  However, pin location, slope of
green, and wind direction/speed all can change the needed club.

  i) If the pin is located near the front of the green, the ball has two
methods of getting close to the pin: the first is to hit just short of
the green and roll the ball on very slowly, and the other is to move
up one club (or to a different speed and club), and to try to use a
high shot/back spin combo to get the ball to land near the pin, and
     then stay there.

ii) If a pin location is in the middle to farther back, there is one more
option available as well as the ones listed above.  Hitting the
front of the green will allow a player to roll the ball to the cup,
but this means the player has to take into account the slopes of the
     green (the arrows).

iii) The last factor to consider before making any shot in this contest is
the direction and speed of wind.  A great player can use any wind
circumstances to get the ball close.  Some general rules to follow
are: Wind going in your face means increasing your distance, wind
at your back means less power on your swing/moving to a lower club.
Also, a player must take into account winds pushing the ball from the
left or right, and aim their shot to accomodate for it.

------------------------Longest Drive Contest Strategies--------------------
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

15)This is definately the easiest game to win based on skill alone.
Provided that a player has reasonable timing when they swing, they will
hit a 1 wood on fast speed, and knock it onto the fairway.  To win
usually requires at least 274 yards, and on the fairway.  There are a
few points to keep in mind however:

  i) Wind can knock a ball off course enough to make it not travel far
enough or even into the rough.  Compensating for the wind is a must so
the ball will still get the maximum distance available, and still make
the fairway.  Also, using the wind to your advantage, when coupled with
a purposely done slice or hook, will allow for more distance (this is
a very advanced technique, and should only be attempted by those with
lots of practice at the game).

ii) Aim for a part of the fairway where there is a large patch of ground
for the ball to land on.  This means if a small mistake was made in
the swing mechanics, the ball may still stay on the fairway.  This
allows the player to still be eligible for the contest.

iii) It becomes increasingly difficult to win this contest as your rank
increases, but your skill increase should be about equal to the
     increased challenge.

Truly a great game, easy to learn, hard to play, and even tougher to
master.  I wish great success to any who attempt the greatest golf game
until Mario Golf was released.  This one is still more challenging,
however, so bring your gaming skills if you dare play.
