Presenting what will become a complete FAQ for Capcom's classic Nintendo
Entertainment System (NES) game Destiny of an Emperor. The guide includes
a full walkthrough, tables listing all relevant game data (e.g. items,
tactics, officers), game secrets, and frequently asked questions.
I began taking notes on Destiny of an Emperor back in 1994, and later,
when starting a Web site for Destiny of an Emperor (which would later
become Kongming's Archives/kongming.net) I expanded on them. Now, years
later, all those notes are being compiled into the guide you see before you
(so it at least serves one good purpose other than taking up space on my
hard drive). Keep that in mind if the writing style seems to shift a
little from paragraph to paragraph in sections.

In addition to this guide you may also reference our ad-free (ads blow)

Section III - FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
----------------------------------------
Answers to frequently asked Destiny of an Emperor questions.

Q: I just started the game, and it takes me forever to win battles!
A: Though you start the game with equipment, it isn't automatically
equipped to your characters. Select a general's items through
the menu, select a weapon (Flail or Dagger) or armor (Robe),
and choose the equip option. You should be fine now.

Q: I just started the game, and when I walk I lose soldiers!
Q: Do you really start the game with no money to spend on equipment?
A: In the first village you will find a merchant walking around
near a horse. Speak with him, and he will give you some money
and enough rations begin your journey.

Q: Help! Zhang Jao beats the living tar out of me at Qing Zhou!
A: Start searching for a random battle containing the general Han
Zhong, and defeat him. After you win, at this point in the game,
you should be offered a chance to try and hire him. Do so, even
if it takes you a few tries. After he joins, enter the cave
behind Qing Zhou, and place Han Zhong in the lead of your party
(select Formation from the main menu). Talk to the Brigand
by the water, and he will create a bridge for you. Cross the
bridge, explore to find the Ax, then locate and battle Zhang
Jao. He will now only have Zhang Bao and Zhang Liang with him.

Q: When trying to hire officers, they complain that I have no steed!
A: In Xu Zhou (the first castle), go to the Merchant. In his inventory,
you will see an item called 'Steed' for 200 Gold. If you purchase
it, and have one in your inventory when an officer asks to join,
you will be able to offer it to them in exchange for their
services. You can buy Steeds in other cities as well.

Q: Where to get Chi Tu Ma? Does Chi Tu Ma actually do something?
A: Find Chi To Ma here: http://kongming.net/doae/i/ss/chituma.html
Early in the game, Chi Tu Ma isn't very useful, but later on,
especially if given to an officer with decent agility (Pang Tong,
Guan Xing, and Jiang Wei all being good choices), it will help
them to go first nearly 90% of the time. This can be a life-
saver, especially in tough battles like Zhou Yu, Chen Pu,
and the various encounters with Cao Pi or Sima Yi.
It has also been reported by a few people that sometimes
Chi Tu Ma can be recovered a second time later in the game.
It is worth visiting again later to see if this bug happens
to grace your own game. Lord Yuan Shu took a screenshot:
    http://kongming.net/doae/i/ss/chituma2.png

Q: Help: Where is Wang Gui? Help: Where is Zhou Chao?
A: Zhou Chao, normally a recruitable officer in Chang An, is missing
more frequently than he is found. Yang Jin, who would normally
be found in Luo Yang (where you fought Lu Bu and Dong Zhuo),
also vanishes from time to time. There's not much purpose in
worrying about either of them unless you are playing a challenge.

Q: Where is the Trident (a unique powerful mid-game weapon)?
A: You find it in Nan Yang (the city formerly occuped by Yuan Shu).
Check the guide itself for more information.

Q: Help! I am finding open treasure chests, or a listed item is missing!
A: A glitch exists in Destiny of an Emperor which can sometimes cause
certain items or treasure chests to be empty (or, in some cases,
can even repopulate them). This can lead to missing out on Swords
in Jingzhou, several of the Magical Swords, and even the Halberd.
If you encounter this glitch, drop what you are doing, go outside,
and fight at least 45 random battles. Check to see if the missing
item(s) have reappeared. If not, fight a small batch of additional
items (this can reverse the glitch). If it still does not reappear,
you are better off starting your game over from the beginning.
The cause of this glitch is presently unknown.

Q: Zhuge Liang wakes up and gets mad at me! What do I do?
A: Leave the house, come back, and when the game prompts you to wake
him do nothing. After several moments he will wake on his own, hold
a civil conversation with you, and offer to join your party.

Q: Help! I just got to Shu (after Jingzhou), and officers hit too hard!
A: If you arrive in Shu at a relatively low level, your strategist, be
it Pang Tong or Zhuge Liang, will know a tactic called Ji Rou.
Cast this tactic at the beginning of a battle (use Chi Tu Ma
to make this faster) and damage taken from physical attacks for
the full duration of a battle will be reduced by 50%.

Q: How do you break Liu Zheng out of his cell?
A: Stand in front of the cell door and tap up on the direction pad
about once ever half second. Do not press firmly or hold it down.
After about five or six taps, done correctly, the cell will open up.

Q: I've defeated Liu Zheng and found out about the magical swords, and
I'm supposed to attack Sun Quan, but I don't know where to go?
A: South of Gui Yang (south from Chang Sha) you will now find a
bridge into Wu territory. Use the inn and save your game before
you continue. The generals here are much more powerful than the
officers you've been facing in Liu Zheng's territory.

Q: Where is the Halberd (the best weapon in the game)?
A: You find it early in the second cave of Wei, toward the end of
the game. See the guide itself for more information.

Q: Help! I cannot 'defeat' Sima Yi's Thunder!
A: When you first face Sima Yi at Ru Nan you will not be able to
counter his 'Thunder' tactic. You will wake up in Liu Bei's city.
Liu Bei will tell you to speak with Guan Suo, who is waiting with
Guan Yu in Chang Sha. Go to Chang Sha (north from Gui Yang in
Jingzhou) and you will meet Guan Suo next to Guan Yu. You _must_
speak with Guan Suo or you will not be able to counter Sima Yi.
Guan Suo gives you the tactic, Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right,
Up, Down. Face Sima Yi again and, after he says you cannot defeat
his 'Thunder' tactic you will find that you are not transported
back to Jian Ye when you first hit the confirmation button. The
button-press will also be accompanied by an odd chime. You have
a few moments, here, to ender the 'spell' Guan Suo gave you on
the direction pad. If you do it properly, Sima Yi will shrug it
off, comment that brute force will suffice, and attack you. If
you fail you will again be blasted back to Jian Ye.

Section IV - FULL GAME WALKTHROUGH
----------------------------------------
Below you will find a full walkthrough which takes you from the beginning of
Destiny of an Emperor straight through to the final battle. It is divided
into chapters, one for each major part of the game (nine in total), and each
chapter is divided into destinations. Each destination lists numerically
the steps you can take to complete them in full. Important locations in
cities and fortresses are listed under the name at the top of the dest-
ination, and battles are listed in the included to-do lists. Each battle
is rated according to the following system:

  - Very Easy: minimal damage even on all-out.
  - Easy: easily won with all-out, though strategy helps.
  - Moderate: with use of strategy damage should be moderate.
  - Hard: if not careful you may lose officers.
  - Very Hard: without strategy you will lose.

Experienced players will not be challenged even by Very Hard battles unless
they do something unusual like attacking the final boss with Zhou Yu as
their strategist or go through the game fighting only mandatory battles.

- CHAPTER I:  ZHANG JAO, YELLOW TURBAN REBELLION -
--------------------------------------------------

Luo Song Village
 1) Speak to the residents.
 2) Talk to Shui Zhou Ping for gold and provisions, he is near the house
you exited standing next to a horse. Don't leave until you get the
food otherwise you will lose soldiers.
 3) Hire Song Ren and Song Yong if you like, though they will quickly be
replaced with other officers. I advise simply ignoring them.
 4) Equip your officers then set out.

Xu Zhou Castle (Invite, Gullwing)
 Palace, Headquarters, Historian
 Inn (1 Gold Each), Provisions
Blacksmith (Dagger, Flail, Bandana, Robe, Leather)

you can do so in one attack. 21 Exp, 56 Gold, 175 Rations.
 2) Before talking to anyone, rest.
 3) Speak with the people, talking to the man at the entrance last.
 4) Hire Chen Deng in a house to the east of the city. Give him the
dagger and have Mi Zhe [Zhu] serve as strategist.
 5) Talk to and battle Ma Yuan Yi. (Easy)

so in one attack. 27 Exp, 84 Gold, 300 Rations.
 2) Check in the central tent in the northeast pot to find an Ax.
This is a powerful weapon for this point of the game. Give it to
Zhang Fei. Keep his soldiers above 100 for extra damage in battle.
 3) Return to Xu Zhou, save, then head southwest to Tie Man Xia.

Tie Man Xia Fortress
 1) Battle Zhang Jao, Zheng Mao, and Han Zhong at the fortress. (Moderate)

way to do so in one attack. 39 Exp, 124 Gold, 400 Rations.
 2) Open a chest in the western tent to find an Ax. Give it to Liu Bei
if you are using Guan Yu for your fire tactics.
 3) Return to Xu Zhou, save, then fight outside until you find Han Zhong.
Beat him and you will be able to recruit him. Hiring Han is the only
way to enter Qing Zhou from the rear (advised), but you can skip him
and make a direct attack. If you do, buy some Resurrects.
 4) Return to Xu Zhou, save, then head north to Qing Zhou again. Enter
through the back if you have Han, attack gate if you do not.

Qing Zhou (2nd Visit)
 Inn (1 Gold Each)
Merchant (Elixir A, Resurrect, Steed, Gullwing)

then when he is under 100, cast on Zheng, then Cheng.
1b 1) If you do have Zhong, or are willing to go out and find then
recruit him, enter the cave behind the castle once he is in your
party and use the Formation command to put him ahead of Liu Bei.
Speak to the guard who will put up a bridge for you to use.
1b 2) Follow the path below you until you reach the next branch, then
head north. Retrieve an Ax (which can go to Guan Yu), return to
the branch, then head west. You will reach a fork in the road at
which you should follow the southern path. This will lead you to
    another battle with Zhang Jao.
1b 3) Defeat Zhang Jao, Zhang Bao, and Zhang Ling. (Moderate)
    - Zhang Jao
    - Zhang Bao
    - Zhang Ling
Make all physical attacks against Zhang Jao. Cast Wuo Jian with
Chen Deng. Have Guan Yu and Mi Zhe [Zhu] cast Lian Huo against
Zhang Ling, then when he is under 100, cast on Zhang Bao. Zhang Jao,
Zhang Bao, and Zhang Ling die. 48 Exp, 116 Gold, 375 Rations.
 2) If badly wounded rest and recover in Qing Zhou (otherwise rest in
Xu Zhou), but either way set out for Xu Zhou.

Xu Zhou Castle (2nd Visit) (Invite, Gullwing)
 Palace, Headquarters, Historian
 Inn (1 Gold Each), Provisions
Blacksmith (Dagger, Flail, Bandana, Robe, Leather)
Merchant (Elixir A, Resurrect, Steed, Gullwing)
 1) Speak with Tao Qian. He will plead for Liu Bei to take his place as
governor of Xu Zhou. You are presented with the option to refuse,
but even if you attempt to he will just keep asking. Liu Bei leaves
your party after you accept. A messenger arrives moments later
informing you of the tyranny Dong Zhuo is responsible for in the
capital and urging you to assist them in removing the traitor.
    * Note: Don't worry about Liu Bei's gear. You will get it back when
you hire Liu Feng, his son, on the way out (see below).
 2) On way out hire and equip Bei's son, Liu Feng.
 3) Save, then head southwest past Tie Man Xia to Fan Shui Guan fortress.

---------------------------------------------------
- CHAPTER II:  DONG ZHUO, A TYRANT IN THE CAPITAL -
---------------------------------------------------

Fan Shui Guan Fortress
 Inn (1 Gold Each), Provisions
 1) Meet Sun Ce outside the fortress. He tells you he attacked
Fan Shui Guan but that another general, Yuan Shu, didn't send
him his needed supplies resulting in his defeat.
 2) Battle Hua Xiong and Li Su at the fortress. (Moderate)
    - Hua Xiong
    - Li Su
    - Rebel Force x3
Make all physical attacks against Hua Xiong. Have Guan Yu and
Mi Zhe [Zhu] or Chen Deng cast Lian Huo against Li Su, then when he
is under 100 focus all attacks on Hua Xiong. Drop Rebels below 100
if you can do so in one attack. Hua Xiong, a good officer, becomes
recruitable after this battle. 51 Exp, 120 Gold, 325 Rations.
 3) There is an inn in the central tent. Rest to restore soldiers.
 4) In the northeastern tent you will find a chest. It contains an Ax.
 5) You can hire the former pirate, Yang Jin, who is walking around in the
northern area of the fortress if you wish. He is not good enough to
trouble you if you aren't interested in a trip back home though.
 6) One of the residents will talk about an amazing horse named
Chi Tu Ma (Red Hare). It is possible to find Chi Tu Ma early:
    Link: http://kongming.net/doae/i/ss/chituma.html
 7) People will say that Cao Cao is attacking Hu Lao Guan, but is being
opposed by a powerful general named Lu Bu. Hu Lao Guan is not very
far to the east of the fortress.
 8) If you like, head back to Xu Zhou to save your game, then travel
on along the road to Hu Lao Guan.

Northern Cave (Optional)
 1) On the trip to Hu Lao Guan, you will see a cave to the north.
You may choose to investigate it if you like.
 2) Upon entry, head east. The path will lead you around the east side
of the cave, then, at the north part of the cave, you will find
some stairs (down). Go down the stairs to retrieve some gold
(usually between 1000 an 1200 coins). Go back up the stairs and
    backtrack to the cave entrance.
 3) From the start of the cave, go north, then at the fork in the road
go east. Follow the east path, which will fork again, at which
point you should go south. This passage will turn and go north,
leading you to some stairs (down). Follow the passage south, which,
after a few turns, will head west. Go south at the first opportunity,
and will soon see some stairs (down). Just ahead you will see a
passage that leads to the west. Follow that passage, which will
turn north, to a staircase (down). In the nest room you will
find a chest. This chest contains the Gold Key, and valuable item
indeed. You may now backtrack your steps to exit the cave.
 4) Hire Guan Ping on your way out, an excellent warrior, who arrived
at the cave entrance while you were searching for the Gold Key.
 5) Return to Fan Shui Guan fortress to rest, and return to Xu Zhou
if you need to save. Now continue on the road to Hu Lao Guan.

Hu Lao Guan Fortress
 1) Battle Lu Bu and Li Ru at fortress (Hard)
    - Lu Bu
    - Li Ru
    - Rebel Force x2
Make all physical attacks against Lu Bu with Guan Yu and Liu Feng
casting Lian Huo against Lu Bu as well. Use another weak character
(Han Zhong) to cast Wuo Jian. When Lu Bu is defeated, focus physical
attacks against Li Ru. 102 Exp, 344 Gold, 625 Rations.
 2) Search the eastern tent, in the leftmost pot of the northeast corner
to find another Ax. This pretty much completes your collection.
 3) Hire Huo Hu, the strategist, who is walking around the southeastern
area of the fortress. He is quite talented and will serve well.
 4) One of the residents suggests using and item called the Gemsword
to entice Lu Bu into betrayal. A man names Wang Yun suggests
searching his home to find it.
 5) In the central tent Cao Cao thanks you. He says he is going to
attack Luo Yang, the capital, in an attempt to defeat Dong Zhuo.
 6) Return to Xu Zhou or Fan Shui Guan to rest and save if you like.
For best power cut your party down to 5 members after making
Huo Hu your strategist. He is not too weak, has good soldiers,
and will cast your spells with very surprising skill.
 7) Head further west to the capital, Luo Yang, to support Cao Cao.
At this point I return to Xu Zhou to clear out old items and remove
Chen Deng and Mi Zhe [Zhu] who I am not using.

Luo Yang Castle
 Inn (1 Gold Each), Provisions
 1) Battle Li Jue at the first gate (Very Easy)
    - Li Jue
    - Rebel Force x3
Make all physical attacks against Li Jue with Huo Hu or Guan Yu
casting Lian Huo until he falls below 100 soldiers. The go all-out
to finish the battle. 63 Exp, 168 Gold, 675 Rations.
 2) Battle Xu Rong at the second gate (Easy)
    - Xu Rong
    - Guo Ji
    - Rebel Force x2
Make all physical attacks against Xu Rong with Huo Hu or Guan Yu
casting Lian Huo until he falls below 100 soldiers. Cast
Wuo Jian with a weaker character (Liu Feng) at the beginning.
Go all-out to finish the battle. 84 Exp, 212 Gold, 900 Rations.
 3) Return to Fan Shui Guan to rest, then come back and attack the castle.
 4) Battle Dong Zhuo at the castle (Hard)
    - Dong Zhuo
    - Lu Bu
    - Rebel Force x2
Make all physical attacks against Dong Zhuo while you attack Lu Bu
with Lian Huo using your two smartest characters (Guan Yu, Huo Hu).
Continue this pattern, healing as needed, until they are defeated).
    102 Exp, 320 Gold, 825 Rations.
 5) Wang Gui, who can be found in the southeastern area of the burnt
city, can be hired. I suggest passing up on the chance though, he
isn't really worth your time, especially if you have the golden key.
Due to a game bug, sometimes Wang Gui does not appear.
 6) In the southeastern area of the city you will meet Yuan Shao, who
will point out that he is the commander-in-chief of the alliance.
He has lost the motivation to continue and is now going to leave,
giving up the attack on the tyrant Dong Zhuo.
 7) In a building located in the northwest part of the city you will find
a red panel on the floor. This is Wang Yun's home. If you search it
you will see that it needs a key. If you completed the cave earlier
you have a Gold Key. Use this key here to obtain the Gemsword.
 8) If you have the Gemsword give it to a lesser battle character.
 9) Rest in the city. If you wish to save, return to Xu Zhou.
Continue west to chase the tyrant Dong Zhuo.

Yang Zhou Castle (Gullwing)
 Historian
 Inn (2 Gold Each)

 1) Battle Lu Bu, Cai Yong, and Hu Zhen at the castle.
    (Hard, Moderate with Gemsword)
    - Lu Bu
    - Cai Yong
    - Hu Zhen
    - Rebel Force x2
Without Gemsword: Focus all physical attacks on Lu Bu and also cast
Lian Huo on him with two intelligent generals (Guan Yu, Huo Hu).
Cast Wuo Jian on the first round with one of your weaker generals.
After Lu Bu is defeated, focus all physical attacks on Cai Yong
while casting Lian Huo on Hu Zhen with two intelligent generals
    (Guan Yu, Huo Hu).
With Gemsword: Have the character with the Gemsword use the item
on Lu Bu. Within a few tries Lu Bu will see it and offer to join
you. You may now hire him! Focus all physical attacks against
Cai Yong while casting Lian Huo against Hu Zhen with two
intelligent generals (Guan Yu, Huo Hu).
 2) If you hired Lu Bu, he will mention his horse, Chi Tu Ma, being
located '8 yards west and 1 yard south."  While correct, the
instructions are a little vague. The horse is in those directions,
but you must follow them starting at Fan Shui Guan fortress. Get
the horse, it will be a vital part of your battle tactics later
    in the game. Link: http://kongming.net/doae/i/ss/chituma.html
 3) Search the southern central building, above the pot, to find a Club.
If you recruited Lu Bu he is the best person to wield it.
 4) In the dungeon of the castle you will meet Cao Cao and the Emperor.
Cao Cao points out that he was almost killed in an ambush and that
he will take care of the emperor. He encourages you to go on to
Chang An to face Dong Zhuo.
 5) Rest in the city, return to Xu Zhou to save if you like, then
continue to Chang An through the cave just outside the city.

Western Cave
 1) Upon entry head directly west (following the southern branch in
the fork ahead) and that will take you to some stairs (down). You
will see a chest directly above you, which contains a Club (which
should be given to Zhang Fei). From there continue west along the
path and go up the stairs (up) directly ahead. The stairs will
lead to a short passage that exits the cave.

 2) Battle Dong Zhuo, Jia Xu, and Zhang Ji at the castle (Hard)
    - Dong Zhuo
    - Jia Xu
    - Zhang Ji
    - [Lu Bu]
Focus all physical attacks on Dong Zhuo while having and intelligent
officer (Guan Yu) cast Ye Huo on him as well. When you are finished
casting Ye Huo, have a weaker officer (e.g. Liu Feng) cast Wuo Jian.
After Dong Zhuo is defeated focus all physical attacks on Jia Xu, and
when he is defeated, deal with Zhang Ji as you please.
If you did not recruit Lu Bu at Yang Zhou castle, you will face
him again here. If you happen to have the Gemsword at this point,
this is your second opportunity to recruit him! If not, or if you
do not wish to recruit him, Lu Bu should be wiped out first by
having intelligent officers target him with Ye Huo.
 3) Invite Liu Bei by using the 'Invite' option presented in the same
building you use to save your game.
 4) See Liu Bei. He will thank you and give you a free rest!
 5) You will wake up to Liu Bei's summons. Upon arrival to the castle
you will meet one of Cao Cao's messengers who points out that
Yuan Shu has come into possession of the Hereditary Seal and now
calls himself emperor. You are encouraged to move into Yuan Shu's
territory to deal with the rebel.
 6) Zhou Chao, who is walking around in the northeastern part of the
city can be hired, though again you should not have a need for him.
It is common for Zhou Chao not to appear in games.
 7) Save your game.
 8) Purchase some Power Pills before moving on, then head west into
Yuan Shu's territory when you are ready.

- CHAPTER III:  YUAN SHU, THE FALSE EMPEROR -

Tavern
 1) If you leave Chang An into Yuan Shu's territory and head south
you will come across a small bar. Inside you will meat a powerful-
looking general. His name is Zhao Yun, and he offers to join you.
Unfortunately, however, he is currently serving Gong Sun Qian
[Gongsun Zan] and cannot leave with you.
 2) Now head east and follow the mountains until you see a small
opening. From there you can head south to Yuan castle.

along the river and that an officer named Ji Ling defends the city.
 5) You will hear that Yuan Shu is stealing all the beautiful ladies
    in the city. The Fiend!
 6) Save at Chang An if you like, then follow the river to fight the
powerful Ji Ling at Huai Nan castle.

Huai Nan Castle
 Historian

 1) Battle Ji Ling at the castle (Hard)
    - Ji Ling
    - Zhang Xun
    - Rebel Force
Focus all physical attacks on Ji Ling while having and intelligent
officer (Guan Yu) cast Ye Huo on Zhang Xun. Make sure you heal
when needed. When only one of them remains go all-out unless an
officer is near death. 168 Exp, 408 Gold, 675 Provisions.
 2) Rest at the inn to recover from your wounds and save your game.
 3) You find out that Zhao Yun, back at the bar, is one of the tigers
(a group of five generals that served Liu Bei. These five generals
were among the best in his kingdom).
 4) A man asks if you are (leaders name). If you reply yes, he says
that his wife has something to say to you. She lets you know
that the west gate of Nan Yang is under construction and
    recommends attacking it.
 5) Now move on to attack Chen Cang fortress directly to the north.
There will be a passage to the east, but there is no point in
    going that direction yet.

Chen Cang Fortress
 1) Battle Han Xian and Li Feng at the fortress (Easy)
    - Han Xian
    - Li Feng
    - Rebel Force
Focus all physical attacks on Li Feng while having and intelligent
officer (Guan Yu) cast Ye Huo on Han Xian. Go all-out when one of
them has been defeated. 174 Exp, 292 Gold, 1025 Rations.
 2) The person at the entrance says nobody is there. Check anyway.
 3) In a building to the northeast inside the fortress you may search
a treasure chest for a spear.
 4) In the center tent you will meet a person named Xu Yuan Zhi who
offers you a letter of introduction that will allow you to meet
    a man named Shui Jing.
 5) Head south from the fortress and go east along the path you
previously passed to meet Shui Jing.

Shui Jing's Home
 1) Offering the introduction from Xu Yuan Zhi you may pass the woman
at the entrance to meet Shui Jing.
 2) Shui Jing says that if you employ Fu Long or Fen Chu as your strategist
nobody can stand before you. He also says you will meet them soon.
Fu Long and Fen Chu are Zhuge Liang and Pang Tong.
 3) Return to Huai Nan to heal, save at Chang An if necessary, then from
Chen Cang fortress head north. You will find a castle with two gates,
and to its east a cave. If you wish to get some good items, go to
the cave. Otherwise head to the castle.

Eastern Cave
 1) From the entrance head north. Follow the path until it splits south
and west. Go west. Up against the wall a chest will contain a Spear.
The closer one will contain a Cap. Backtrack to the beginning.
 2) From the entrance go west past the first intersection in the road
to another that goes north or continues west along the southern wall.
Take the north route, which will wind around to the south and to some
stairs (down). Follow the path north from the stairs to get between
1500 and 1700 gold, follow south to get a Robe. Return to the
    cave entrance.
 3) From the entrance follow the south most wall. It will lead you
west, past a river, then north to some stairs (down). Search the
chest by the stairs to get a Cap. Follow the eastern path around
until you see some stairs (down). In a room in the southwest
corner of the floor you will find a Spear. Continue east from
that chest to another which also contains a Spear. From that
chest go north until you see a small room off to your east. Enter
and open the chest to find a Robe. Leave the room and go west
until you see the stairs you passed earlier, then go down them.
 4) You will see four chests. The southern one contains approximately
1000 coins, the eastern a Power Pill, the northern a Robe, and the
western chest contains a Cap. You have everything in the cave now,
so return to Huai Nan castle and rest then go north to attack the
    gates next to the cave.

Nan Yang Castle (Invite, Gullwing)
 Palace, Headquarters, Historian
 Inn (12 Gold Each), Provisions
Blacksmith (Club, Padded AC45, Hood AC40)
Merchant (Elixir B, Steed, Resurrect, Gullwing)
 1) Battle Liang Ji at the First Gate (Very Easy)
    - Liang Ji
    - Rebel Force x2
Focus all physical attacks on Liang Ji while having an intelligent
officer (Guan Yu) cast Ye Huo on him as well. When he is defeated
    or below 100 go all-out. 123 Exp, 184 Gold, 950 Rations.
 2) Battle Chen Lan and Ling Gang at the Second Gate (Very Easy)
    - Chen Lan
    - Ling Gang
    - Rebel Force x2
Focus all physical attacks on Chen Lan while having an intelligent
officer (Guan Yu) cast Ye Huo on Ling Gang. When they are defeated
    or below 100 go all-out. 150 Exp, 264 Gold, 975 Rations.
 3) Battle Yuan Shu at the Castle (Hard)
    - Yuan Shu
    - Yuan Yin
    - Lu Fan
    - [Lu Bu]
    - Rebel Force
Focus all physical attacks on Yuan Shu while having and intelligent
officer (Guan Yu) cast Ye Huo on Yuan Yin, which will hit only
occasionally, but often enough. Make sure you cast Shui Jian at
the beginning of the battle, it will help a lot. When Yuan Shu is
defeated, make your physical attacks against Lu Fan. Heal when
needed, and make sure you don't use your last TPs when casting
Ye Huo. Power Pills may be used here to replace attacks if the
battle is too hard. After the battle Yuan Shu will try to flee.
If Zhang Fei is dead he will not be able to corner Yuan Shu.
Will you chase him? 300 Exp, 484 Gold, 2325 Rations.
Lu Bu will join this battle against you if you did not recruit
him in Dong Zhuo's territory, and he will be more powerful than
he was when you last met. As always, he is a primary target due
to his ability to dole out heavy damage, and teaming up on him
with intelligent officers and Ye Huo should see him defeated.
 4) Rest, remove unwanted generals, save, and invite Liu Bei.
 5) Speak to Liu Bei, then speak to the residents.
 6) Purchase a Silver Key from a merchant walking around in the
northeast area of the castle for 4000 gold. It is a great bargain!
 7) Search the end of the path, leading toward the palace, in the north-
east area of the city. There, you will find the Trident, a one-of-
a kind weapon with an attack power of 100! This weapon will serve
you amazingly well through the next two and a half areas!
 8) Villagers tell you that Yuan Shu's brother is seeking revenge and
has left Bo Hai castle to come and defeat you. Everyone thinks
Yuan Shu is dead, including Liu Bei, even if he fled. If Yuan Shu
did get away, however, one curious man asks, "Didn't I just see
    Yuan Shu outside the castle?"
 9) It is vital that you purchase some equipment upgrades in this
area. You will need them very much for the upcoming area. The
Hood provides you with AC 40 while the Padded provides you with
AC 45. Purchase Hoods for your officers before you purchase
Paddeds. Make sure you save enough to buy Power Pills in future
cities and rest at the inn when you need to.
 10) Spoiler: at this point, you should give all of Lu Bu's equipment
to another character in your party, and prepare a fifth officer,
even if only temporary, to take his palce. You will see why soon.
 11) Save your game, then venture into Yuan Shao's territory when
    you are prepared.

---------------------------------------------
- STORYLINE BRANCH: YUAN SHAO, or JINGZHOU? -
---------------------------------------------

At this point in the game you will be given a degree of freedom in
choosing your future path. Yuan Shao's territory can be very dangerous
with the likes of Yan Liang and Wen Hun, and the final battle against
Yuan Shao can be very difficult.
If you travel across the Nan Yang bridge, west, then down another
bridge which should appear quickly, you will instead enter Jingzhou.
Aside from a very difficult battle with Han Xuan, Huang Zhong, and
Wei Yan, this path is much easier than Yuan Shao's. You will be able
to receive very powerful weapons--swords--along this path, though,
and armed with them Yuan Shao's territory would be extremely easy
to complete. You can also recruit Huang Zhong, a tiger general,
Wei Yan, a very powerful officer with many soldiers, and Pang Tong,
if you go far enough, one of the finest strategists in the game who
just happens to be backed by an exceptional force of soldiers.
You may also mix-and-match your approach. You could start in Yuan
Shao's territory, for example. Recruit Xu Zhe, a very talented
strategist, and buy some Wood Hs from Bo Hai.
Perhaps the easiest path woul be to do just that, travel south
to complete Jingzhou, then return to Nan Yang to finish conquering
Yuan Shao's lands. The game points you in the direction of Yuan
Shao's territory. If you savor the challenge, start there.

-------------------------------------------
- CHAPTER IV:  YUAN SHAO, AVENGING FAMILY -
-------------------------------------------

Northern Bridge
After you exit the city to go north into Yuan Shao's territory you
will be attacks  after your second step on the bridge. Yuan Shao
himself has ambushed you. As if matters weren't bad enough, Lu Bu
betrays you and changes sides over to Yuan Shao!
 1) Battle Yuan Shao outside Nan Yang castle. (n/a)
    - Yuan Shao
    - Guo Tu
    - Wen Hun
    - Yan Liang
    - Lu Bu
There is no particular strategy to this battle. Yuan Shao will
catch you by surprise and he will attack you with all his men
including the reinforced Lu Bu. If you have equipped all your men
and given Lu Bu's equipment to your 6th general you may be able to
survive the round without any deaths. If not, or if he caught you
unprepared, you may loose up to four generals. The odds of him
wiping you out though are almost nonexistent. Even if all your
generals are weak, one still usually uses a non-damage tactic.
 2) Return to Nan Yang, talk to Liu Bei, rest, save, then once again
venture into Yuan Shao's territory. Remember the names of the
generals you met and avoid them in battle for the next little while.
Don't worry, there will be some hard battles, but when you face
Yuan Shao you will be more prepared than you were in this battle.
If you feel the need for some extra strength return to Yuan Shu's
territory and recruit Ji Ling and Zhang Xun to help out.
 3) Go north, then when you are approaching the mountain head west.
Avoid the dangerous generals at this time. Off to the west you
will find a cave. Enter the cave.

Dan Fu's Cave
 1) The entrance of the cave will twist south immediately after the
entrance, then split into two paths: one south, and one west.
Follow the west path along the water until you see a general.
    Talk to him.
 2) He will try to ambush you for your possessions, but before he does
he will stop to ask who you are. When he finds out you are with
Liu Bei, he apologizes, expresses his interest in joining you,
then you have the choice to hire him. Do so. He will replace
Lu Bu. He is a little smarter, has more soldiers, and while he
does not have as much strength, he is by no means weak.
 3) When prepared, leave the cave and return to Nan Yang to save
    and rest if needed.
 4) From Nan Yang go north again, but instead of heading west,
go east until you see a castle. Attacks the castle.

Bo Hai Castle
 1) Battle Lu Guang, Shen Pei, and Gao Lan at the castle. (Moderate)
    - Lu Guang
    - Shen Pei
    - Gao Lan
Focus all physical attacks on Shen Pei while having or two
intelligent officer (Guan Yu, Liu Feng) cast Ye Huo on Lu Guang.
You may wish to cast Shui Jian to protect against Shen Pei's
Shui Xing, but it is not necessary for survival. When both are
defeated focus both physical attacks and fire attacks on Gao Lan
until he is weak. At this point it is safe go to all-out. Heal
    as needed throughout the battle.
 2) Rest in the inn to recover your wounds.
 3) You cannot yet cross the bridge, the woman blocking the bridge
is crying for a person name Xu Zhe. An old man says that that
he is no longer going by that name, but instead uses the name
Dan Fu. Another man says that Dan Fu is located in the cave
    to the west.
 4) You will meet Shui Jing again in this castle, and he asks you if
you have gone to the western cave. He asks about some debris and
then he gives you some Gun Powder to clear them away.
 5) Return and save in Nan Yang, then return to Dan Fu's Cave.

Dan Fu's Cave (Second Visit)
 1) Again, go immediately west, but now continue past the stream.
The road will eventually split. One path will continue west to a
dead end, but there will also be a south road, which you should
take. The south road will immediately split. It will continue
south or go west into a twisty passage. Go west and through the
passage. The passage will end going west again, but will split.
You may continue west or go north. Follow the path north. It
will continue north then turn west to some boulders blocking
your path. You can now see a man behind them in northwest portion
of the level. Use the Gun Powder from the items menu while facing
the rocks and they will be destroyed. You may now talk to and
recruit Dan Fu, or Xu Zhe [Shu] as he is really named.
 2) Exit the cave and return to rest and save if you need to. Continue
on to Bo Hai castle. If you haven't yet recruited any good people
from Yuan Shao's territory (Lu Guang, Shen Pei) it may be a good
idea to drop to five generals so Xu Zhe [Shu] can also participate
in battle. His skill with tactics is hardly short of vital.

Bo Hai Castle (2nd Visit)
 Inn (12 Gold Each), Provisions
 Blacksmith (Spear, Padded AC45, Hood AC40, Wood H AC60)
 1) Continue to the bridge and talk to the woman. Because Xu Zhe [Shu]
is with you, she will apologize and allow you to pass. You may
now access the other half of the city.
 2) The next battle will be very difficult so the purchase of Wood Hs,
Padded Armors and Power Pills is advised if you are not up for the
challenge or if the last battle was dangerous. If you are playing
a challenge that limits your random encounters you should at least
consider the purchase of some Power Pills. It should also be noted
that the Wood H is an extremely great defensive item for the price
you pay, and its purchase is strongly advised.
 3) You will find out that Yuan Shao is at Ji Zhou castle to the east.
 4) Having purchased some particularly study Wood Hs with a difficult
battle ahead, this is a good opportunity to consider venturing into
Jingzhou before proceeding further into Yuan Shao's territory.
See the Jingzhou vs. Yuan Shao discussion right before this
    chapter for more information.
 5) When you are prepared to fight the bad boys of the area, leave the
castle and head east going north over the mountains then south down
over the other side. You will see a small fortress. Attacks the gate.

Xu Shou's Fortress
 1) Battle Xu Shou at the fortress (Very Hard)
    - Xu Shou
    - Yan Ling
    - Wen Hun [Chou]
    - Rebel Force
You must start the battle by reducing both Yan Liang and Wen Hun
[Chou] below 1000. The best strategy to do this is have three
powerful characters use Power Pills on Yan Liang and the other two
smart officers use Ye Huo on Wen Hun [Chou]. Repeat this two rounds
and they should be below. From this point continue beating on
Yan Liang with all you have until he goes under then you will start
on Wen Hun [Chou]. When they are defeated you can start on Xu Shou.
Remember, he has Yan Re, a new fire tactic. It can do terrifying
damage to all in your party. Did you bring Xu Zhe [Shu]? I hope so.
You must take him down with all you have as well. Heal as needed
only, and you do not want him to get a window in which to use
Tong Xian. This and a lack of critical hits and Yan Res on their
part can lead you to victory.
 2) After you defeat them you can enter. This is a very small fortress
and up in the northeastern area you will see a woman inside a small
prison. If you talk to her she explains that you need a Silver Key
to let her out. If you have the key let her out. If you do not,
you must go back and get it before going to the next castle. After
you release her she will thank you and give you the Zhao [Zhao] Letr
to give to Zhao Yun so he knows she is ok. Return to Bo Hai to rest,
or to Nan Yang to save if you like, then continue (or, if you defeated
Xu Shou in good health, continue without returning, but be careful).
 3) It is appropriate to note that Xu Shou, Yan Liang, and Wen Hun [Chou]
can now be recruited in random encounters. You wouldn't regret
picking one of the two warriors up. They are among the best
officers you'll come across for a while.

Guang Zong Castle
 1) Upon arrival you will not battle at the gate, but rather you will
enter the premises. Inside you will see Zhao Yun guarding the one
entrance to the castle. He warns you that he does not wish to
fight and suggests that you leave at once. Rather than leave give
him the Zhao [Zhao] Letr so he knows his sister is okay. He will
then no longer be inclined to fight for Yuan Shao and will ask to
join your side. Do not hesitate to use him; he is arguably the best
general in the game. It is now a good idea to return to Nan Yang
to reduce your party to 5 generals again so Xu Zhe [Shu] can still
    participate. When ready, return.
2) Battle Yuan Tan, Yuan Xi, and Tian Feng at the castle (Hard)
    - Yuan Tan
    - Yuan Xi
    - Tian Feng
    - Rebel Force
Focus all physical attacks on Yuan Tan while having one or two
intelligent officers (Guan Yu, Zhao Yun, or Xu Zhe [Shu]) cast
Ye Huo on Yuan Xi. Yuan Xi will not be hit every time but it will
be enough to count. When one of the two is defeated you should
alter your strategy (If you don't mind the cost, Power Pills can
be used instead). It is important that you get them below 1000
quickly. If Yuan Xi is still up while Yuan Tan is down, make a
few more attacks on Yuan Xi. Make one or two on Tian Feng as well.
Continue when all are below 1000. If Yuan Tan was defeated,
start making your attacks against Tian Feng. If Yuan Xi was
defeated have everyone make physical attacks against Yuan Tan
then finally Tian Feng. You may want to use Power Pills if
attacking a general above 1000 soldiers.
 3) Enter the city and rest at the inn.
 4) In the middle of the town there is a well. If you search below
you will find a Sabre; a great item for this point in the game.
 5) The villagers are all afraid of Yuan Shao. You will find out from
them that Ji Zhou is supposed to be to the east, and that they are
suspicious of spies in the city. In fact, there is a scary-
looking warrior in the central area of the southern portion of the
city. If you talk to him, he will fight you. Save first.
 6) Battle Yuan Shang in the city (Normal)
    - Yuan Shang
    - Rebel Force x5
Yuan Shang is one of the most powerful generals you have met yet.
He is strong, smart, has many soldiers, and some of the best
tactics of the area. He is also alone, and that is why he will
not be too hard. Simply focus on him with normal attacks with
all characters. If anyone gets below 200 simply heal them with
Tong Xian. The battle may take a little longer, but you should
defeat him without losing a general.
 7) You should make sure your generals are well equipped and have
Power Pills available. When you are ready, head east from the
city, north over the mountain, then east again until you see
    some gates. Attacks them.

Ji Zhou Castle
 Palace, Headquarters, Historian
 Inn (25 Gold Each), Provisions
 Blacksmith (Sabre AP70, Padded AC45, Wood H AC60)
Merchant (Resurrect, Elixir B, Smoke Pot, Gullwing, Power Pill)
 1) Battle Ma Yan and Lu Xiang at the first gate. (Easy)
    - Ma Yan
    - Lu Xiang
    - Rebel Force x3
Focus all physical attacks on Ma Yan while having two intelligent
officers (Guan Yu, Zhao Yun, or Xu Zhe [Shu]) cast Ye Huo on
Lu Xiang. When one of the two is defeated you can go all-out to
    finish the battle.
 2) Battle Zhang Yi and Guo Tu at the second gate. (Moderate)
    - Zhang Yi
    - Guo Tu
    - Rebel Force x2
Focus all physical attacks on Guo Tu while having two intelligent
officers (Guan Yu, Zhao Yun, or Xu Zhe [Shu]) cast Yan Re on the
enemy party. When one of the two is defeated you can go all-out
    to finish the battle.
 3) Go back to Guan Zong to rest. Make sure that you are prepared for
the next battle. When ready, return to attack the castle.
 4) Battle Yuan Shao, Yuan Shu*, Zhang He, Ju Shou, and Lu Bu
    at the castle (Very Hard)
    - Yuan Shao
    - Yuan Shu*
    - Zhang He
    - Ju Shou
    - Lu Bu
This battle is only very terrible if you leave Lu Bu alone. You
_must_ defeat him as soon as you can. Focus all physical attacks
on Lu Bu, using Power Pills at least while he is above 1000.
Have two or three intelligent officers cast Yan Re (Guan Yu,
Zhao Yun, Xu Zhe) on the enemy party. The spell will rarely hit
most of the generals, but it will do more than its share of
damage. Make sure you conserve some TP for Tong Xian. When
Lu Bu is below 1000, and you see another general close, go
ahead and attack them once to make sure they fall below. Within
a few rounds most enemy generals should be below 1000. Remove
the enemies with physical attacks in this order:  Lu Bu,
Zhang He, Yuan Shao, Ju Shou, and then Yuan Shu*.
    * Note: If you didn't kill Yuan Shu when he tried to get away, you
will have to face him here ranked below Yuan Shao.
 5) In the city all will be thankful. The Sabre is now available in
the weapon shop. If you have some extra money, purchase a few.
Make sure you stock up on Power Pills again, and get a Gullwing.
 6) Outside on the north portion of the castle there is a small home.
In it you will meet a man that will increase your level by one.
Perhaps you should save it for a level up that is more difficult
to get... like level 51. Invite Liu Bei. He thanks you for your
hard work, and suggests that we must now unite Jing Zhou. When
you are ready, return to Nan Yang, cross the bridge, go west, and
cross the next bridge you see south. You are now in Jing Zhou.

----------------------------------------------------
- CHAPTER V:  JING ZHOU - DIVIDED AMONG FOUR LORDS -
----------------------------------------------------

Generals Homes
 1) Upon entry to Jing Zhou you will come across a house at the end
of the bridge. This house belongs to Yi Ji. Yi greets you and
informs you that his friends Ma Liang and Ma Su have some
information for you. He tells you that their house is just south
of here. He asks if you are willing to unify Jing Zhou. Of
course you are, that is why you came here.
 2) Further south down the road you will come to Ma Su's home.
Inside he greets you and lets you know that his brother, Ma Liang,
is in a house southeast of his own. He encourages you to meet
him and listen to his story.
 3) You will pass a home on the way to Ma Liang's house. A fellow
inside lets you know that this home belongs to Zhu Ge [Zhuge]
Liang, but he is not currently home. Continue with your journey.
 4) After continuing down the trail you come to Ma Liang's home.
He gladly receives you and informs you that four governors are
fighting for control of Jing Zhou, but the common man is
suffering. He begs you to unify the land. Continue south
along the shore to fight at the first castle.

Wu Ling Castle
 Inn (30 Gold Each), Provisions
Merchant (Elixir B, Elixir C, Resurrect)
 1) Battle Jin Xuan and Gong Zhi at the castle. (Easy)
    - Jin Xuan
    - Gong Zhi
    - Rebel Force x2
Focus all physical attacks on Gong Zhi while having two or three
intelligent officers (Guan Yu, Xu Zhe [Shu], or Zhao Yun) cast
Ye Huo. Remember to get the generals below 1000 as soon as
possible. When one of the two is defeated you may go all-out
    to finish the battle.
 2) Rest at the inn to recover from your wounds.
 3) Search under the well in the upper part of the town to find a bow.
This powerful weapon gets two attacks, with the second being at
    half strength.
 4) If you cannot yet heal your whole party, pick up some Elixir Cs
for the next battle. They will be very helpful.
 5) Meet the vicious tiger Wang. "Grrrrrr..."
 6) You hear that Chang Sha castle is inhabited by an 'old tiger'.
The person you are speaking to wonders if he could be one of the five.
 7) Another person asks if you could settle Chang Sha castle as well.
Looks like you are going to meet this 'old tiger'.
 8) You hear that a great wise man lives in a castle called Ling Ling.
You are told that this is the man Shui Jing called Feng Chu and he
goes by the name of Pang Tong.
 9) When prepared, move on to Chang Sha. It is going to be a hard battle,
so make sure you are more than ready. Return to Nan Yang to save if
you are not confident. Follow the road east from Wu Ling until it
turns south along the river. Across a bridge you will come across
    Chang Sha castle.

Chang Sha Castle (Gullwing)
 Headquarters
 Inn (40 Gold Each), Provisions
Blacksmith (Bow, Ring M, Wood H)
Merchant (Resurrect, Elixir C, Gullwing, Power Pill)
 1) Battle Han Xuan, Huang Zhong, Wei Yan, and Yang Ling at the castle.
    (Very Hard)
    - Han Xuan
    - Huang Zhong
    - Wei Yan
    - Yang Ling
    - Rebel Force
This will be a hard battle, like Han Xuan said, and many generals
could die if you don't get Wei Yan and Huang Zhong under 1000
quickly. In the first round have your two strongest fighters use
Power Pills on Huang Zhong and, if you have three intelligent
officers (Guan Yu, Xu Zhe [Shu], Zhao Yun) have them all use Ye Huo.
If you only have two, have the strongest of three remaining (best
if with the Bow) use a Power Pill on Wei Yan. This could take both
Wei Yan and Huang Zhong under a 1000, but if it does not, try to
have the person with Chi Tu Ma get a hit in to do so before they
get a turn. You must now focus all physical attacks on Huang
Zhong with three warriors, and then when he is defeated, on Wei
Yan with two or three. The other smart generals should be using
Yan Re while doing this. When they are both defeated the other
two should be under 1000 or nearly dead. If you are not too
beaten up, go all-out to finish the battle. If you are wounded,
kill the one with less soldiers, then the stronger one. Heal as
needed throughout the battle and remember to leave a few TP for
    healing in an emergency.
 2) Upon entry you will meet Wei Yan and Huang Zhong. Both want to join
you! This is a very good chance and you should not pass it up.
Wei Yan is the best general that you can possibly have on your side
at this time. Make him your leader, and give him the sword (which
should always go to a general with over 1000 soldiers if possible)
that is found within the city. Huang Zhong is a Tiger General.
 3) Immediately after you enter you will see a well. Search below
to find a Sword, a surprisingly powerful weapon for this area.
For now, Zhang Fei is the best owner for this weapon.
 4) Chang your equipment around and remove any generals you no longer
need. Xu Zhe [Shu] should probably be removed from combat in favor
    of a better fighter.
 5) Restock on Power Pills, Elixir Cs if you use them, and make sure
you have at least four Gullwings for the upcoming areas.
 6) The Bow (4000) and the Ring M (2000) are now available at the
equipment dealer's shop. The Bow is a powerful addition if you
want the extra strength, but the Ring M is only AC5 better than
the Padded armor. You really do not need to buy any of them unless
you have extra money, but you may want to buy a Ring M or two at
this point for your two weakest characters (soldier wise, that is).
 7) The people are very upset about all the war.
 8) It is suggested that you take Gui Yang castle next.
 9) Somebody suggests that you should not trust governor Zhao Fan of
Gui Yang castle. Why is that?
 10) Meet the savage Wang for the second time and almost be attacked!
That would be a very terrible thing to happen indeed.
 11) When you are prepared head south from Chang Sha to Gui Yang
castle. If you are not confident use a Gullwing to return to
Nan Yang so you can save your game. You should probably save
at least every two major battles.

Gui Yang Castle (Invite)
 Palace, Historian
 Inn (30 Gold Each), Provisions
Merchant (Power Pill, Elixir C, Smoke Pot)
 1) Surprisingly you are not attacked at the gate. Instead you are
granted entry and everyone seems to welcome you with open arms.
A friendly lord indeed! Do all his men and generals feel you are
    so welcome as well?
 2) Before entering the palace, locate the well along the central
eastern side of the city, and search below it. You will find
another Sword! The lord of this castle must really trust you
to be leaving things like this around... right?
 3) Talk to the somewhat zombie-like residents, then arrive in the
palace to talk with Zhao Fan, the lord, who is quite interested
in offering you the chance to rest at no charge. He is quite
happy to accept either answer you provide.
 4) If you refuse, he will become angry, and will attack you on
the spot with his officers. If you accept, you will rest, but
in the middle of the night he will ambush you with his officers,
causing all of your officers to automatically lose 75% of their
soldiers! We present strategies for either situation below.
5a) Battle Zhao Fan, Bao Long, and Chen Ying in the palace. (Easy)
    - Zhao Fan
    - Bao Long
    - Chen Ying
    - Rebel Force x2
The strategy is simple. Have Wei Yan, using a sword (or the most
powerful alternative), attack Zhao Fan. Have the other character
with a sword attack Bao Long. Have another person with a Bow
attack Chen Ying. The other two generals can attack Zhao Fan or
use Ye Huo, either works. The next round, go all-out.
5b) Ambushed by Zhao Fan, Bao Long, and Chen Ying in the palace. (Hard)
    - Zhao Fan
    - Bao Long
    - Chen Ying
    - Rebel Force x2
This is a tougher situation. If you have a spell to heal your
whole party, have the person with Chi Tu Ma cast it along with
somebody else, then follow the strategy listed above for the
normal battle. If you do not (yes, I still have Tong Xian) you
must hope for the best. On your first round each character
should cast Tong Xian, with the general that is using Chi Tu Ma
casting it on your most valuable or weakest character (Probably
Zhao Yun). If you know your usual turn order you can make good
use of that here. When you have recovered (you may have lost
one to three generals) you can begin following the strategy
outlined under the normal attack above. If you lost too many
people to do that, even after using any Resurrects, start by
taking the opponents below 1000. When they are below 1000, beat
them in this order:  Zhao Fan, Chen Ying, and then Bao Long.
    Heal as needed while fighting.
 6) After his defeat he will step down from the throne and beg mercy.
 7) Get that sword mentioned in step two if you missed it!
 8) Rest at the inn to recover your wounds, save your game, and invite
    Liu Bei to the palace.
 9) Restock your Power Pills (if you used any), Elixir Cs (if you use
them) and get some Smoke Pots if you have some money to burn and
don't want to deal with any random battle.
 10) You hear of a powerful man named Xing Dao Rong at the next castle
named Ling Ling, the home of Pang Tong.
 11) Liu Bei and the rest of the residents only additional reminders
that you should be conquering Jing Zhou and not talking to them.
 12) When you are prepared head south and follow the water northwest
until you see Ling Ling inside the mountains. Attack the gate.

Ling Ling Castle
 Palace, Headquarters, Historian
 Inn (30 Gold Each), Provisions
Merchant (Power Pill, Smoke Pot, Resurrect)
 1) Battle Xing Dao Rong and Liu Yang at the gate. (Easy)
    - Xing Dao Rong [Xingdao Rong]
    - Liu Yang
    - Rebel Force x3
Have your best warrior (soldiers over 1000 and strength) attack
Xing Dao Rong and have your other general with the Sword attack
Liu Yang. Two other generals should attack Liu Yang and the last
attack Xing Dao Rong. This will drop them below 1000, and you
can go all-out with no concern.
 2) Battle Liu Du at the castle (Easy)
    - Liu Du
    - Xing Dao Rong [Xingdao Rong]
    - Rebel Force x2
Have your best warrior (soldiers over 1000 and strength) attack
Liu Du and have your other general with the sword attack Xing Dao
Rong. Two other generals should attack Xing Dao Rong and the last
attack Liu Du (best with a Bow). This will drop them below 1000,
    and you can go all-out.
 3) When you defeat Liu Du you will receive a message that you have
unified Jing Zhou. Go speak to Liu Bei when you are done here
to get an update on what is going on in the country.
 4) Rest at the inn to recover your wounds and save your game.
 5) If you walk just outside the entrance you will see that there are
two blocks of walking space around the wall to the west. Follow
this path and it will lead you to a house outside the west side
of the city. Inside you will see a man that looks _exactly_
like Pang Tong, and he will suggest that you search the area
around him. If you search below him you will find a Sword.*
    * Note: If no sword is found here you are suffering from a rare
glitch that has come up in Destiny of an Emperor. If you continue
with your game you will _not_ be able to get two of the five
special blades later in the game, and you will _not_ get the
Halberd, the best weapon in the game. Many people have been able
to reverse the glitch by fighting 45 or more random battles outside,
and this is certainly worth trying, but if you cannot resolve the
problem in the end, you are better off starting your game over
again. The cause of this glitch is unknown.
 6) Replenish your Power Pills and buy Smoke Pots if wanted.
 7) The people are happy to finally be free, but when you search for
Pang Tong the fellow standing in the northwest area of the city
simply suggests that Pang Tong has gone out with his soldiers.
This is followed by a chime. This chime indicates that Pang Tong,
a very powerful general, is now roaming free in Jingzhou. You may
stumble across him while traveling in Jingzhou. If you defeat him
he will join your party. For now, you may wish to consider waiting
until Zhuge Liang joins your party. Also keep away from water
when it can be helped--you do not want Pang Tong to have access
to the water tactic, Hong Shui.
 8) When you are prepared and rested you should go to Gui Yang,
which is where you will find Liu Bei, invited or not.

Gui Yang Castle (2nd Visit) (Invite)
 1) Rest if wounded and save the game.
 2) If you have not defeated Yuan Shao Liu Bei will suggest that you
take your battle to his territory. You must defeat Yuan Shao
before the game will progress. If you have also defeated
    Yuan Shao, read on!
 3) Spoiler: you should give Xu Zhe's items to another officer.
 4) Liu Bei has a letter for Xu Zhe. Xu Zhe reads the letter and
informs you that his mother, housed at the capital, is ill.
He requests to leave immediately and Liu Bei allows him to.
If Xu Zhe, for some odd reason, is in your billeting,
Liu Bei will ask you to come back with him in your party.
 5) Leaving the palace, you will meet Xu Zhe again. He will tell
you where Zhuge Liang's home is (it was a hut you passed when
you first entered Jingzhou, and inside there was only a fellow
wondering who lived there). He will suggest that you locate him
now, and make him your strategist. He also tells you that
Zhuge Liang is the person Shui Jing referred to as Fu Long.
    * Note: In this game, Zhuge Liang's name appears as Zhu Ge Liang.
 6) If you were told that Pang Tong went out with his soldiers in
Ling Ling castle, and you wish to avoid him until you have
a good strategist, you will want to buy a character's inventory
worth of Smoke Pots here, and five Gullwings in Chang Sha. If
you don't mind walking in the fields with Pang Tong, or Pang
Tong hasn't yet left with his troops, there is no need for
Smoke Pots, and you only need to buy three Gullwings.
 7) Use a Gullwing and retrace your steps to Zhuge Liang's home.
Make sure you are prepared for battle, as you have just lost
your tactician. You will be getting several to replace him
soon enough, two of which being better.

Ma Liang's House
 1) If you stop by Ma Liang's house you will meet him and Ma Su.
They are very grateful and ask to join you in your cause after
pointing out that they are skilled martial artists. The are

excellent strategists and Ma Su is also a decent warrior with
many soldiers. One of them, Ma Ling in particular, could serve
as a temporary replacement for the very skilled Xu Zhe.
    * Note: Don't forget about Ma Liang! Later in the game your
best strategists will learn the Wan Fu healing tactic, which
heals one officer fully. This can be good or bad. If you need
a tactic that heals everyone, in the hands of a skilled
strategist, you will want to turn to Ma Liang.
 2) Continue west until you reach the next hut, Zhuge Liang's home.

Zhuge Liang's House
 1) Jin, Zhuge Liang's brother is home, but Liang himself is away.
Jin points out that he left to visit Cui Zhou Ping in Lou Sang
village. Remember that village in which you started the game, and
the man standing outside a hut who complained that, "Cui Zhou Ping
is never home?" Use a Gullwing and return to Xu Zhou, then follow
the path outside the castle to the east. Cui Zhou Ping is home.

Lou Sang Village (2nd Visit)
 1) Go to Chi Zhou Ping's home and talk to him. He will tell you that
    you just missed Zhuge Liang.
 2) Use a Gullwing to Nan Yang, return to Zhuge Liang's home.
 3) You may want to save your game at Nan Yang.

Zhuge Liang's House (2nd Visit)
 1) When you arrive, talk to Jin. He will tell you that Zhuge Liang
has come, but already left again. He suggests that you return to
Nan Yang castle, and offers to send you a message there when
    Zhuge Liang returns.
 2) Return to Nan Yang castle.

Nan Yang Castle (2nd Visit) (Invite, Gullwing)
 1) Rest if needed and save your game.
 2) Enter and talk to Liu Bei (who has arrived) in the palace. He
will tell you that he received a message from Jin, which states
that his brother, Zhuge Liang, has returned home.
 3) Return again to Zhuge Liang's home.

Zhuge Liang's House (3rd Visit)
 1) Jin will greet you pointing out that his brother is home, but he
is in the back sleeping. Go back and talk to him. You will have
a choice. Do you want to wake him or not? If you choose yes, he
will wake up, quite angry, and ignore you. You will not be
able to recruit him on this visit. If you choose no, and
patiently wait (don't press any buttons), he will wake up on his
own accord and greet you. He explains that, under normal circum-
stances he would never leave his broth, Jin, unattended, but
that, because you have come so many times, and shown your
dedication, he will join you. He explains that he has a few
obligations to fulfill, and that aferward he will meet you
    at Gui Yang castle.
 2) Return to Gui Yang.

Gui Yang Castle (3rd Visit) (Invite)
 1) Rest if needed and save your game.
 2) Enter the palace and speak with Liu Bei. He greets you and informs
you that Zhuge Liang has some interesting information.
 3) Zhuge Liang tells you that on the way he met his old friend
Zhang Song, and that Zhang reports many problems in his area with
border raids from the Han Zhong army. he goes on to say that the
governor, your relative, Liu Zheng begs you to assist him.
Zhuge Liang says that if you go, he will accompany you,
    and joins your party.
 4) Prepare your party and head out in search for Pang Tong, if you
have been lucky enough to avoid him thus far. Avoid fighting close
enough to the water for your opponents to use water tactics.
Failure to do so at this point could lead to your death.

Pang Tong Fields
1a) Battle Pang Tong in a random battle away from the water. (Hard)
    - Pang Tong
    - Rebel Force x3
You must attack him with each general's physical attack, using a
Power Pill. Do not back off, and only heal if you have a general
that does not do enough damage to matter. Pang has many tactics
that you have never seen before. Da Re will kill most generals
in one hit. Hong Shui, fortunately, you do not need to be
concerned about. Ji Mian will cancel all your attacks, which
can spell death. Wan Fu will heal all his soldiers. Bei Ji
doubles all his damage. Just keep attacking him. If he uses
Ji Mian, try some tactics on him and heal. They will probably
fail, but if they get the damage in even once it is worth it.
You should win unless Ji Mian stays in effect for too long.
Having Zhuge Liang or Ma Su in your party gives you a small
advantage. Zhu Ge is hard for him to hit and can actually hit
him with some tactics. Ma Su is fairly hard for him to hit, and
he has enough soldiers to live through all his tactics.
1b) Battle Pang Tong in a random battle near the water. (Very Hard)
    - Pang Tong
    - Rebel Force x3
You must fight him exactly as mentioned above. The one
difference here is that instead of using Da Re, which will kill
only one general, he uses Hong Shui, which does 1100 to 1300
damage to each general and twice that if he casts Bei Ji.
Again, having Zhuge Liang in your party gives you a good chance,
but Ma Su is a great advantage here. On average he will live
through as much as three Hong Shui attacks provided he dodges one
of them. If he uses Ji Mian, you will probably loose, especially
if he keeps healing or using Hong Shui.
 2) When you defeat him, he will join you. Make him your leader and
move on to attack Shu when you are ready.

------------------------------------
- CHAPTER VI - SHU, THE RIVERLANDS -
------------------------------------

Lu Bu's Revenge
 1) In random battles there is a chance that you will meet Lu Bu
again. He will want revenge for his defeats. He is more powerful
then ever before, and you may find it very hard to beat him.
Battle Lu Bu in a random field battle. (Hard)
    - Lu Bu
    - Rebel Force x4
Begin the battle by casting Ji Rou with the general that is using
Chi Tu Ma. If you have Bei Ji, cast it on the generals that use
Swords. It is best to do this with the weakest generals available.
Have everyone use Power Pills. Assign a dedicated healer
(preferably the general using Chi Tu Ma) and have everyone else
continue using Power Pills until the battle is over. When Lu Bu
is defeated, go all-out. If you loose, return and try again.
This battle may take a few attempts to succeed. Once defeated,
Lu Bu regrets his life of betrayal, then is executed.
 2) Return to save and restock, then continue into Shu whenever you
like. Also, the area just across the bridge in Shu is a great
area to gain some experience if you are worried about the much
more powerful generals in the area. Just keep in mind that down
the road you will loose Ji Rou and Yin Xian. This means you will
have a more restricted and costly healing method with no damage
softening tactics. You will not find castles that much easier,
but random battles will be much more manageable.

A Home Along the Road
 1) As you pass through the forests and mountains of Shu you will
find a small home at the end of a road. You must pass the home
in order to proceed. Inside you will meet an officer who will
mirror Zhang Song's words, urging you along. If you have not
yet recruited Zhuge Liang you must do so now as he will not
let you pass until you have.

Super Rebels and Brigands
 1) This is a special treat, only found in the asian versions of
Destiny of an Emperor (you can download the Japanese ROM file
if you are dedicated enough to give this a shot). Southeast of
Liu Kui's fortress (see below, the next fortress along the way),
if you explore along the bottom region of the mountain side
(anywhere within the bottom two rows) you will encounter
super-powered Brigand or Rebel forces. These "Super Rebels"
will have soldiers ranging anywhere from 24,000 to 54,000
(that's more soldiers than even the final boss of this game),
and will not be taken down lightly. If you do defeat them,
however, you will be rewarded with a multitude of level-ups.
In fact, it is possible to reach the game's highest regular
level here in the span of around fifteen minutes.
 2) For more information, review our article on this subject:
    http://kongming.net/doae/secrets/super_rebels/

Liu Kui's Fortress
 1) Battle Liu Kui and Zhang Ren at the fortress. (Hard)
    - Liu Kui
    - Zhang Ren
    - Rebel Force x2
Have the general using Chi Tu Ma cast Ji Rou to prevent any
serious damage. Have your two most powerful generals use Power
Pills on Zhang Ren. Use the remaining two generals to cast
Bei Ji on the generals using Power Pills. On the next round
make physical attacks against Zhang Ren with everyone until
he is defeated, then move on to Liu Kui. If you are hard
pressed, don't hesitate to use Power Pills. After Liu Kui
falls below 1000 soldiers, you may go all-out as long as you
    are not almost dead.
 2) Inside the main tent a soldier will inform you that Liu Zheng
has been captured and taken to Fu Shui castle.
 3) There is nothing else in the fortress. Return to Gui Yang castle
to rest and save if you like. When prepared, trace your steps back
to this fortress and continue along the path to save Liu Zheng.
If you are having trouble in the area, stop and try to recruit
Zhang Ren. He is available and there is not a better general
to have in your active party at this time.

Swordmaker's Home
 1) Just east of Fu Shui castle there is a home in which a swords master
lives. He tells you that he has been making swords for years, but
has not made one he truly appreciates. He tells you that the best
Iron can be found at Mt. Gang. Tai, but that it is very rare. He
says that if you bring some back he can finally make his masterpiece.

Fu Shui Castle
 Headquarters, Historian
 Inn (25 Gold Each), Provisions
Blacksmith (Bow, Sword, Ring M, Copper H)
Merchant (Elixir C, Resurrect, Power Pill)
 1) Battle Meng Da and Tao Qian at the gate. (Moderate)
    - Meng Da
    - Tao Qian
    - Rebel Force x2
Cast Ji Rou using the general that rides Chi Tu Ma. Have your
two strongest generals attack Meng Da. Using the other two
generals that remain, cast Bei Ji on the two attacking generals.
Make physical attacks against Meng Da until he is defeated. You
may go all-out at this point if your party is in good health,
otherwise focus your attacks on Tao Qian before giving up control
    to the computer.
 2) Battle Yan Yan, Fa Zheng, and Yang Huai at the castle. (Hard)
    - Yan Yan
    - Fa Zheng
    - Yang Huai
    - Rebel Force
Cast Ji Rou with the general that rides Chi Tu Ma and have your
two strongest generals attack Yan Yan. Have the remaining two cast
Bei Ji on your attacking officers. On the next round have your best
general attack Yan Yan with a Power Pill, have your next strongest

attack Yang Huai with Power Pills, and have everyone else attack
Yan Yan. This should finish him. Next have everyone attack Yang Huai,
which should defeat him as well. If you are healthy at this point
you can go all-out, otherwise focus on Fa Zheng, using Power Pills
if necessary, while attempting to keep your health up.
 3) Enter the city and rest at the inn.
 4) Buy Power Pills to replace any that you may have used in the
previous two battles and some Elixir Cs if you use them.
 5) The equipment shop has the Copper H. While this helmet is not a
huge improvement over the Wood Hs that have likely been serving you
well for some time now (only a 10 AC gain), it is the best helmet
you're going to be able to find for a while. You should pick up
one for each member of your team if you have the money.
 6) Someone reminds you that Liu Zheng is held somewhere in this city.
 7) You hear of a mountain in Shu where good iron can be found.
 8) You are told of the famed general, Wu Yi, who stays in Luo castle.
 9) One of the residents tells you that the last of the Five Tigers
is currently in Han Zhong's army (you currently have Guan Yu,
Zhang Fei, Zhao Yun, and Huang Zhong.
 10) Enter the palace and head to the northeast part where you will
find a path through the wall. Inside you will see Liu Zheng
behind some bars. If you speak to him he tells you that they
are old and you could probably break them away by ramming them.
To open the gate, stand in front of it, and tap the up button
(do not hold down or press it too firmly) about every half second.
After about five or six taps, the door should break away. If it
does not, adjust the speed of your tap, and you should quickly
have the door open. Both holding the button down, and ramming
the door, have no worthwhile affect.
 11) Save your game then continue north until you see a castle. Here
you will battle the last of the Five Tigers. Be prepared.

Luo castle
 Headquarters
 Inn (25 Gold Each)
Merchant (Elixir C, Resurrect, Smoke pot, Gullwing)
 1) Battle Huang Quan and Leng Bao at the gate. (Easy)
    - Huang Quan
    - Leng Bao
    - Rebel Force x3
Cast Ji Rou with the general using Chi Tu Ma, have your two
strongest attack Leng Bao, and have the remaining two cast
Bei Ji on them. On the next round you may go all-out. When
they are defeated return to Fu Shui to rest and save your
game, as you will want to be completely refreshed for the
    next battle.)
 2) Battle Ma Chao, Ma Dai, and Pang De at the castle. (Very Hard)
    - Ma Chao
    - Ma Dai
    - Pang De
    - Rebel Force
At Luo castle you must battle Ma Chao, along with his generals
Ma Dai, Pang De, and a Rebel. This is a hard battle, so make sure
you are prepared before entering it. Have your health and TP
completely up and have all generals carrying a full stock of
Power Pills. Pang De knows the spell Ji Mian, which Pang Tong
(no relation) used when you fought him earlier. He should be
defeated first but if he casts it make sure you focus on defense
and healing until it wears off. All you can do it hope for that
to happen soon. Begin the battle by casting Ji Rou with the
general who rides Chi Tu Ma (Pang Tong is best for this). Have
your two strongest generals use Power Pills on Pang De. Have the
other two cast Bei Ji on those attacking generals. On the second
round have the general with Chi Tu Ma cast Bei Ji on one of the
last two generals, have the three best generals use Power Pills
on Pang De (or Ma Chao if Pang is defeated), and have the last cast
Bei Ji on himself. From this point on finish Ma Chao with Power
Pills then move on to Ma Dai. You may need to repeat this battle
if Pang De casts Ji Mian and it lasts too long.
 3) Ma Chao will be shocked at his defeat and will request to join
you as a result. If you hire him he will join you along with Ma Dai.
 4) Enter the city and rest at the inn.
 5) Search under the northernmost well to find a Battleax.
 6) At the HQ you can replace generals to let Ma Chao and Ma Dai into
your party. Remove Pang Tong and put Ma Dai in his place. Give
Ma Dai the Battleax. If you are still using Wei Yan, replace him
with Ma Chao. If you recruited Zhang Ren, replace Huang Zhong with
Ma Chao, even if it means that Ma Chao does nothing for the time
being. It won't be long until you add him to your active party.
 7) You discover that Mt. Gang Tai, the location the swords master
was speaking of, is due south of this city.
 8) You are told that Liu Zheng has betrayed you and joined the Han
    Zhong army. Quite a turnaround.
 9) You hear that Mian Zhu Guan fortress is just beyond My. Gang Tai.
 10) Return to Fu Shui and save, then follow the path to Mt. Gang Tai.

Mt. Gang Tai
 1) Follow the path at the entrance until you see two small passages
to the west and one to the north. Take the northernmost of the
two west paths. It will wind around to some stairs going down.
Go down them, and down the stairs you will see below. This will
take you into a winding passage that leads to around 1400 coins.
Take the money and return to the two passages by the entrance.
 2) Taking the southern path you will head west through a passage and
come through by a lake. Walk around the lake to find some stairs
going down. When you are below you will see a passage to the south-
eastern area by a pond. Follow that corridor east then north and
you will find some stairs up. This will take you to a square room,
which, if you walk around, you will find some more stairs leading up.
You will come out in a triangle room, which, like the others, has
some stairs up on the opposite corner. Take the stairs and you will
come out by a chest. In the chest is the Iron Ore that the weapon
smith mentioned earlier. Return to the passages by the entrance.

Mian Zhu Guan Fortress
 1) Battle Li Yan, Liu Ba, and Liu Xun at the fortress. (Easy)
    - Li Yan
    - Liu Ba
    - Liu Xun
    - Rebel Force
Begin the battle by casting Ji Rou with the general that rides
Chi Tu Ma. Have the other four generals all attack Liu Ba. On
the next round, if Liu Ba is still alive, have all five
generals attack him. When he is defeated you may go all-out.
 2) In the westernmost tent a chest contains a Battleax, pick it up.
 3) You find out that Liu Zheng has settled down at Cheng Du and it
waiting to fight you. The people don't understand why Liu Zheng
    has turned on Liu Bei.
 4) One of the woman's husbands has gone to Mt. Gang Tai to see Iron
Ore, but has not returned. That was three years ago.
 5) Another fellow is sad that he was unable to find any Iron Ore,
and he feels that he cannot go home empty handed.
 6) When you are prepared head north to Cheng Du to attack the gate.
You should be strong enough, but if not return to save and rest.
There is no sense in taking a risk here.

Swordmaker's home (2nd visit)
 1) Give the Ore that you found to the sword master. He will be happy
to see it and will promise you some incredible weapons in exchange.

Cheng Du Castle (Invite, Gullwing)
 Palace, Headquarters, Historian
 Inn (30 Gold Each), Provisions
 Blacksmith (Sword, Battleax, Chain M)
Merchant (Gullwing, Elixir C, Resurrect, Smoke Pot)
 1) Battle Lei Tong and Wu Lan at the gate. (Easy)
    - Lei Tong
    - Wu Lan
    - Rebel Force x3
Cast Ji Rou with the general that is using Chi Tu Ma and have
all other generals attack Lei Tong. One the second round
have all generals attack Lei Tong. If Lei Tong is still
alive in the third round, repeat the process. If not, you
    may go all-out.
 2) Return to rest and save after this battle unless you are healthy.
 3) Battle Liu Zheng, Gao Pei, Wu Yi, and Wang Lei at Cheng Du castle.
    - Liu Zheng
    - Gao Pei
    - Wu Yi
    - Wang Lei
    - Rebel Force
Cast Ji Rou with the general that is using Chi Tu Ma and have
all other generals cast Bei Ji on themselves. On the next
round have all generals make attacks against Wu Yi. If you
like, use two Power Pills. If the general that uses Chi Tu Ma
is a strategist, have them cast Yan Re and heal as needed.
When Wu Yi is dispatched move on to Gao Pei. After you have
defeated Gao Pei you may go all-out.
 4) Rest at the inn and invite Liu Bei.
 5) Search by tree one space east of palace entrance for a Scimitar.
 6) If you are in need of them, restock on Smoke Pots, Gullwings,
and Elixir Cs at the merchant's.
 7) Try to get each of your generals equipped with a Battleax and a
Chain M. If you are short on gold, go outside and fight some
random battles. While you are out pick up Zhang Ren, Yan Yan,
and any other good generals that you really like. Add any of
them to your party if you feel they can help.
 8) The residents tell you that Cheng Du is the capital of Shu and
they are eager for Liu Bei to arrive.
 9) One of the residents says that he still sees chaos threatening
the present calm in the stars. He suggests being prepared.
 10) An old man notices that Liu Bei (Shu) has become nearly as
powerful as Cao Cao (Wei) and Sun Ce (Wu). He is happy to
witness Liu Bei's rise in power.
 11) Liu Bei thanks you for restoring honor to his family and
liberating Shu. He says that an old man came by earlier saying
something about some swords. Return to the swords master and find
    out what he wanted.

Swordmaker's Home (3rd visit)
 1) When you talk to him he apologizes and says he built the swords
Bao Ye, Nu Long, Qing Long, Qing Guang, and Wan Sheng, but they
were all stolen by the Yellow Scarves. He is sad because there
    was nothing he could do.

- CHAPTER VII - WU, THE SOUTHLANDS -
------------------------------------

Cheng Du (2nd Visit) (Invite, Gullwing)
 Palace, Headquarters, Historian
 Inn (30 Gold Each), Provisions
 Blacksmith (Sword, Battleax, Chain M)
Merchant (Gullwing, Elixir C, Resurrect, Smoke Pot)
 1) When you return to Chang Du Liu Bei will celebrate and point out
that with Cao Cao in Wei and Sun Ce in Wu peace will arrive at
last. To maintain peace Liu Bei sends Guan Yu to Chang Sha and
Zhang Fei to Gui Yang. Soon after they leave a messenger arrives
to tell you that Cao Cao of Wei has taken ill and died and Sun Ce
of Wu was assassinated. To make things worse Wu attacks and Guan
Yu and Zhang Fei are both in danger. You are charged to defend
them and fight off the attackers.
 2) Use a Gullwing to travel to Chang Sha.

Ling Ling (2nd Visit)
 1) Enter the palace and speak with Guan Yu. Guan Yu explains that
Zhang Fei has gathered information on Wu, and encourages you to
travel south to Gui Yang to meet with him.
 2) Standing next to Guan Yu is Guan Xing, his son. Speak with Guan
Xing and he will offer to join you. Not only is Guan Xing quite
strong, he is fairly smart as well, and like his father, he
gains soldiers with level ups. He is one of the finest officers
in the game, so don't miss this chance to add him to your party.

Gui Yang (2nd Visit)
 1) Enter the palace and speak with Zhang Fei. Zhang Fei informs you
that Sun Quan now has the imperial seal, and has claimed the title
of Emperor. Not only that, but Cao Pi has usurped the throne and
claimed the title of Emperor himself. He also informs you that
Liu Bei would like to speak with you. Before you return to
Liu Bei, be sure to defeat the Wu attackers at Ling Ling and
    Wu Ling castles.
 2) Standing next to Zhang Fei is his son, Zhang Bao. If you speak
with him, he will offer to join your party. Zhang Bao, like his
father, has a very high attack power, but it is a dozen or so
points less. Unlike his father, his intelligence stands at a
passable 150, and intelligence is going to become more and more
critical as you progress into the game.
It is worth noting that some people do not like to hire Zhang
Bao, preferring instead to have both Jiang Wei and Zhuge Liang
in their party at the end of the game (something you cannot do
if you hire Zhang Bao into your party). If you are interested
in this, you have two options. Hire him with a full party, and
he will go to your reserve, or don't hire him at all. You can
always return later in the game. Zhang Bao is a great officer,
however, and unless you are very familiar with the game, you
will find passing him up to be a mistake.

Ling Ling (2nd Visit)
 Palace, Headquarters, Historian
 Inn (30 Gold Each), Provisions
Merchant (Power Pill, Smoke Pot, Resurrect)
 1) Battle Ling Tong and Wu Lan at the gate. (Moderate)
    - Ling Tong
    - Wu Fan
    - Rebel Force x2
Have your two best warriors attack Wu Fan with Power Pills while
two other general cast Bei Ji on them. If you still have Ji Rou
cast it with the general using Chi Tu Ma. Continue attacking
Wu Fan with your stronger generals while using Power Pills if
necessary. If you are using any strategists they should cast
Da Re on Ling Tong. When either Ling Tong or Wu Fan fall you
    should go all-out.

Wu Ling (2nd Visit)
 Inn (30 Gold Each), Provisions
Merchant (Elixir B, Elixir C, Resurrect)
 1) Battle Fan Zhang and Chen Wu at the gate.
    - Fan Zhang
    - Chen Wu
    - Rebel Force x3
Begin by casting Ji Rou, if you still have it, using whoever
has Chi Tu Ma. All other generals should cast Bei Ji on them-
selves. On the following round all generals should make physical
attacks or cast Da Re on Fan Zhang. When Ling Tong i defeated go
all-out. If you are not healthy you should continue with the
previously mentioned procedure rather than going all-out.
 2) After the battle Fan Zhang says Wei has an alliance with Wu.

Cheng Du (3rd Visit) (Invite, Gullwing)
 Palace, Headquarters, Historian
 Inn (30 Gold Each), Provisions
 Blacksmith (Sword, Battleax, Chain M)
Merchant (Gullwing, Elixir C, Resurrect, Smoke Pot)
 1) Liu Bei already knows about the alliance between Wei and Wu, and
that Wei expelled the emperor meaning the collapse of the Han
Dynasty. Zhang Bao urges Liu Bei to take the throne, saying he
has more right to it than anyone, but Liu Bei becomes angry and
says he doesn't want to hear it. Zhang Bao continues with his
case, pointing out Liu Bei is of the Han house, causing him to
become even more angry. Zhang Bao, however, presses his case,
pointing out that if he does nothing their cause will have been
in vain. Liu Bei finally concedes to his advice, and declares
himself Emperor, ordering you to begin a campaign against Wu and
    Wei at once.

Jian An Castle
 Inn (30 Gold Each), Provisions
Merchant (Gullwing, Elixir D, Resurrect, Smoke Pot)
 1) Battle Gan Ning and Lu Su at Jian An castle. (Hard)
    - Gan Ning
    - Lu Su
    - Rebel Force x3
Gan Ning is capable of some serious damage but Lu Su can cause
much more by casting Ji Mian. For this reason it is best to remove
Lu Su first. Have the general that rides Chi Tu Ma cast Bei Ji on
your strongest warrior while that warrior targets Lu Su with a
Power Pill. You may want to have one or two of the other generals
use a Power Pill if your average soldier level is below 3000.
When Lu Su is defeated attack Gan Ning. Use Power Pills if you
are weak. If Lu Su casts Ji Mian you should cast Ji Mian and use
Da Re on Gan Ning while all other generals defend. If you have
Ce Mian you should cast it at the beginning of the battle and
maintain it while you defeat Gan Ning with physical attacks or
    Power Pills.
 2) Rest at the inn.
 3) Speak with the residents.
 4) One of the residents tells you that in order to proceed you must
go south, but he also tells you that Zhou Yu has blocked the canal.
You also hear that Zhou Yu is the general guarding that pass.
 5) The man in the northwestern home tells you that the tree in his
backyard is 1000 6) An old man by the inn says that he can block
the canal if you get him a 1000 year old branch and some sulfur.
 6) In the cave to the north you will find some sulfur. Below the
isolated tree in the northwestern area of the town you will find
the Dead Wood from a 1000-year-old tree. Give them to the old man
waiting by the inn and he will clog the canal for you.
 7) Directly above that tree you will also find a Scimitar. Give
this powerful weapon to your strongest warrior.
 8) If you are using Smoke Pots, which may be a good idea, you should
restock while you are here. You can use Gullwings to reach Jian Ye.
For this reason you should buy enough Gullwings to transport
yourself until you are strong enough to handle the very powerful
generals in this area. If you use healing items buy the Elixir Ds.
    They are excellent healing items.
 10) Before you move on to the next castle you should make sure that
you are fully stocked on Power Pills. You will need them. If you
come across Gan Ning in a battle that you can handle you should try
to recruit him. He will be a great help until you reach a level
high enough to cast Ce Mian.
 11) Follow the road south until you reach Zhou Yu's fortress where
you will battle the great strategist himself. You will also be
introduced to one of the most dangerous tactics in the game, An Sha.

Hui Ji fortress
 1) Battle Zhou Yu, Gu Yong, and Kan Ze at the fortress. (Very Hard)
    - Zhou Yu
    - Gu Yong
    - Kan Ze
    - Rebel Force
Zhou Yu is the greatest threat you have encountered at any
location so far in the game. He has a new tactic called An Sha.
This tactic will kill a general in one hit if it is successful.
When cast by Zhou Yu this is often the case. If you have Ce Mian
you should cast it at the beginning of the battle and maintain it
until you emerge victorious. Use physical attacks or Power Pills
to kill Zhou Yu, Kan Ze, then Gu Yong. If you do not, which is
usually the cast, you should have the general riding Chi Tu Ma
cast Bei Ji on the general that is using the Scimitar. Have your
weakest remaining officer cast Bei Ji on the next strongest general
on your side. The three generals that are left should use Power
Pills on Zhou Yu. On the next round you should use Power Pills on
Zhou Yu with everyone. After Zhou Yu falls move on to defeat
Kan Ze while still using Power Pills. If you are healthy you can
go all out with Gu Yong.
Should Zhou Yu cast Ji Mian you will need to take additional
steps to stay alive. Have your fastest officer cast Ji Mian, make
sure all generals are under the effects of Bei Ji, and heal if
needed. If a very skilled strategist is in combat you may want to
consider using your best water tactic while conserving enough TP
to heal if needed. If you loose the battle because Ji Mian would
not wear off or because Zhou Yu cast it again too fast you may
wish to try again. If you are seriously defeated, but not under
these circumstances, it would probably be best to get some
levelups before attempting the battle again. It is best to enter
this battle if Zhuge Liang knows Jin Xian and is your acting
    strategist.
 2) Retrieve the Scimitar in the southwestern tent. It is to the
    left of the rightmost pot.

Wu Castle
 Historian
 Inn (35 Gold Each)
Merchant (Gullwing, Elixir D, Resurrect, Power Pill)
 1) Battle Zhu Ge Jin, Jang Qin, and Han Dang at the fortress. (Moderate)
    - Zhu Ge Jin
    - Jang Qin
    - Han Dang
    - Rebel Force x2
Have the general riding Chi Tu Ma cast Bei Ji on your smartest
officer. Have that officer cast Hong Shui or, if you have it,
Huo Shen on the enemy party. Have all other officers attack
Zhu Ge Jin. If your party is weak you may want to use Power
Pills to defeat Zhu Ge Jin quickly. You may also wish to have
another officer cast Hong Shui or Huo Shen if you have enough
TPs to throw around. When Zhu Ge Jin is defeated along with
one of his officers you can go all out.
Trivia: Zhuge Jin is Zhuge Liang's brother, who served Wu loyally.
 2) Rest at the inn.
 3) Speak with the people.
 4) You hear that the next fortress is named Po Yang and you must
pass under the mountains through a tunnel to get there.
 5) A number of the villagers are scared or surprised by a glowing
light that they have seen in the tunnel. One is concerned that
    it may be a demon.
 6) Lu Meng, a resident that looks like an officer, takes a hostile
attitude toward you and demands that you leave Wu.
 7) If you search to the right of the well you will find a crossbow.
Have your best officer equip this weapon and give the scimitar
    to the next best general.
 8) Search the eastern end of the trail outside the inn to find a
Splint M armor. Excellent protection for this point of the game.
 9) Stop by the merchant's and restock on Power Pills and Gullwings.
You have a long trip ahead of you so unless you are not concerned
by the generals you have been facing it is probably best to buy
some Smoke Pots or Elixir Ds as well.
 10) Save your game and when you are prepared continue on to Po Yang.

Mountain Tunnel
 1) Follow the path from the entrance to the stairs leading down.
 2) You will find yourself in another passage that winds around
    and again goes down.
 3) The passage you are in should now have green walls and there
should be paths to the west and the north. Go west and continue
along this road. You will see a treasure by some hot rocks that
you will get soon. After traveling this path for a while it will
fork. You may either continue south or you may turn west. You
should go west and follow that path to the treasure to noticed
earlier. The hot rocks will do good damage to all generals that
step on them each time you move a square, so if you are weak make
sure you stay healed. In the chest you will find a Steel H,
which you should give to the officer that is most vital to your
strategy. Cross the hot rocks again, go back to the fork in the
road, and go south to the next set of stairs which lead up.
 4) You should now be in a part of the cave with yellow walls. Directly
above you there should be a set of stairs leading up. If you are
interested in retrieving an Elixir D follow the instructions in
this step. If not, continue up those stairs. If you are going to
proceed with this floor you should follow the passage along the
bottom wall until it forks somewhere near the north part of the
cave. The north passage is a dead end and the eastern passage
continues to the Elixir D, which will be found back at the southern
area of the cave. Return to the set of stairs and follow the stairs
    up to the floor above.
 5) You will now find yourself in the area of the cave with orange walls.
In this cave orange means you are on the ground level. Follow the
path to the north and back around to the south again and a set of
    stairs that lead back down.
 6) Now you will be back in the yellow area again. To the east there
are some stairs leading back up and to the north there is a passage.
The northern passage just loops back around to where it started so
you should just go up the stairs to the east.
 7) You are now once again on the orange floor. Follow the path to the
north until it branches. You can continue north or you may follow
another passage to the west. The northern passage is a dead end,
so turn west and continue up along that path. Along the northern
wall of the cave you will have the choice of going south or
continuing east. The southern path is a dead end so continue east
and around the bend on another screen. When traveling along the
eastern wall of the cave you will see a passage on the east wall.
This passage exits the cave. Unless you are wounded so badly that
you cannot go any farther you should first continue south. In the
southeastern corner of the cave you will see some stairs leading
    down. Follow them below.
 8) You will now be back on the yellow floor with some stairs continuing
down immediately above you. Continue even deeper into the cave.
 9) You will now be in a large cavern with some hot rocks immediately
to your west. Cross those rocks and open the chest on the other
side. "Ahead something is glowing. There is a sudden chill as if
from an evil presence. Upon examination, you find it to be a
sword, glowing eerily like a forsaken spirit. <leader> got a
sword."  This sword is Nu Long and it is one of the five swords
the swords master in Shu made. It has an amazing attack power
of 240 and should be given to your best general. If you have an
officer with a high strength and over 10000 soldiers they should
be the one to receive the blade. Now go back up the stairs to
the floor above and up again so you are on the orange floor.
Go north and follow the passage to the right and to some stairs
that lead up and out of the cave.
 10) If you are very wounded and you do not think you can handle a
very hard fortress battle you should use a Gullwing to return and
heal. If you are healthy, for example if you used Smoke Pots,
    continue on to the fortress.

Po Yang fortress
 Inn (35 Gold Each)
 1) Battle Ding Feng at the gate. (Moderate)
    - Ding Feng
    - Rebel Force x3
If you are short on TPs you may just want to cast Bei Ji on the
generals using Nu Long and the Crossbow using the officer that
rides Chi Tu Ma along with another weaker general. Attack Ding
Feng until he himself is defeated then go all-out. Use a Gullwing,
or if you do not have any, the spell Gui Huan to return home. It
is best to use this spell when facing rebels to insure a high
success rate. If you are doing well and have many TPs you should
just follow the instructions above, but do not cast Bei Ji. When
the battle is over fight some Rebels and use Jin Xian to heal
your party. If you are not using Zhuge Liang as your strategist
change this just to heal then reassign your old tactician.
 2) Battle Chen Pu, Zhang Zhao and Bu Xi at the fortress. (Hard)
    - Chen Pu
    - Zhang Zhao
    - Bu Xi
    - Rebel Force x2
If you do not yet have Ce Mian you should probably avoid this battle
until you do. If you do not and you wish to continue you should cast
Bei Ji on your three best generals and have them attack Zhang Zhao,
Cheng Pu, then Bu Xi with Power Pills. If you do have Ce Mian you
should have the general riding Chi Tu Ma cast Ce Mian. Have your
two strongest generals attack Zhang Zhao with Power Pills while the
remaining two cast Bei Ji on your two attackers. Makes sure you
keep Ce Mian in power until Zhang Zhao is defeated at the very least.
On the second round have one of your powerful generals attack Zhang
Zhao with a Power Pill while the others attack Chen Pu normally.
After Chen Pu is defeated you may go all-out.
If your strategist casts An Sha it is best to rethink your
strategy for this battle. Chen Pu, Zhang Zhao, and Bu Xi are all
very smart officers and you will probably only get one head at
most. Have Zhuge Liang or Pang Tong serve as your strategist
for this battle so you have access to Ce Mian.
 3) Rest at the inn.
 4) Speak with the people.
 5) You are told that Sun Quan was here, but that he has left to
Jian Ye castle with Lu Sun.
 6) Someone tells you that Jin Du castle is to the southeast.
 7) Again you meet Lu Meng. He is becoming angry and again he warns
    you to leave Wu.
 8) If you are confident move on to attack Jin Du castle. If the
previous battle gave you trouble, on the other hand, it may be
best to return and save before proceeding.

Jin Du Castle
 Inn (35 Gold Each)
Blacksmith (Scimitar, Crossbow, Chain M, Broze H)
 Merchant (Elixir D, Resurrect)
 1) Battle Huang Gai at the gate. (Easy)
    - Huang Gai
    - Rebel Force x2
Huang Gai is a good warrior but this battle is rather easy.
Have all of your generals attack him until he is defeated then
go all-out. If you are not very powerful you may want to have
the general riding Chi Tu Ma cast Bei Ji on Nu Long's user,
then attack him with everyone. If you are using a strategist
with An Sha just take his head then go all-out. If you are
wounded after the battle cast Jin Xian while fighting some
rebels or return to the inn.
 2) Battle Sun Yu, Zhang Hong, and Zhu Zhi at the castle. (Moderate)
    - Sun Yu
    - Zhang Hong
    - Zhu Zhi
    - Rebel Force
For this battle it is best to use Zhuge Liang or Pang Tong
as your strategist. Have your fastest general cast Ce Mian
while two others cast Bei Ji on your two best attackers. Have
your two attackers use Power Pills on Zhang Hong. Maintain
Ce Mian until Zhang Hong is defeated. On the next round have
one or two of your best officers use Power Pills on Zhang Hong
again, have your weakest officer attack Zhu Zhi to drop him
below 10000 soldiers, and have everyone else attack Sun Yu.
You may want to use some Power Pills on Sun Yu if you are not
very powerful. When you have defeated Sun Yu you can go all-out.
If you are using one of the An Sha using strategists you
should have the general that rides Chi Tu Ma cast and maintain
Ji Mian. Zhuge Liang should cast An Sha on Zhu Zhi, then after
him Sun Yu. If you have another skilled strategist in the
battle you may want to have them casting An Sha as well, but
if you do this have them target Zhu Zhi while Zhuge Liang
focuses Sun Yu instead. Continue attacking Zhang Hong with
Power Pills until he is defeated then move on to Sun Yu if he
is still alive. When both Sun Yu and Zhang Hong are defeated
    go all-out.
 3) Rest at the inn.
 4) Speak with the people, but not Lu Meng.
 5) You are told that Sun Quan's castle, Jian Ye, is to the northeast.
 6) One of the residents speaks of the large burden placed upon the
residents by some brigands that live to the south in an inn. He
asks if you would be willing to help liberate them from the pain
caused by these bandits by defeating them. In exchange for this
they will give you the town treasure.
 7) If you use Elixir Ds go to the merchant's place and restock.
 8) Several nice items are available in the weapon shop. If you are
powerful you should not concern yourself with the purchase of the
Crossbow or Scimitar. You should buy Bronze Hs for all generals
that are equipped with a lesser helmet. If you are very weak you
should buy some Crossbows to replace your weaker items.
 9) Lu Meng has also followed you to this city. If you speak with him
he will point out that he has warned you enough and now he plans
to remove you from Wu on his own accord.
 10) Battle Lu Meng in the city. (Moderate)
     - Lu Meng
     - Rebel Force x3
You should have Ce Mian available for this battle in order for
it to run smoothly. An Sha and Ji Mian will be of little use so
it is best not to use those strategists. Begin by casting Ce Mian
with the general that uses Chi Tu Ma and make sure to maintain it
until Lu Meng is defeated. Have all the other generals cast Bei Ji
on themselves. On the next round have everyone available attack Lu
Meng and continue with this procedure until Lu Meng is defeated.
When he falls go all-out then rest at the inn to recover your lost
TPs. When you have defeated Lu Meng he will run off confident that
Tai Si Ci [Taishi Ci] will succeed where you have failed.
 11) When you are prepared go south to fight the bandits if you have
decided to help the villagers, or east to Sun Quan's castle.

Brigand's Inn
 1) Battle five Pirates at the Brigand's Inn. (Moderate)
    - Pirate
    - Pirate
    - Pirate
    - Pirate
    - Pirate
If your strategist knows Ce Mian you should begin the battle by
having all generals cast Bei Ji on themselves. On the next round
have all officers with over 100 intelligence cast Huo Shen while
the others attack the first pirate. When three of them have
    fallen you should go all-out.
If your strategist knows An Sha begin the battle by casting
Ji Mian with the officer riding Chi Tu Ma. Maintain Ji Mian until
the battle is completed. Have all other generals with intelligence
over 100 cast An Sha on the opposing Pirates starting with the
first. Have all remaining officers attack the last Pirate. When
four of the Pirates have been defeated you should go all-out.
 2) When you have defeated them they will beg forgiveness and promise
    to change their ways.
 3) Return to Jin Du castle to rest at the inn and gather your reward.

Jin Du Castle (2nd Visit)
 Inn (35 Gold Each)
Blacksmith (Scimitar, Crossbow, Chain M, Broze H)
 Merchant (Elixir D, Resurrect)
 1) Rest at the inn
 2) Seek out the resident that promised you the town treasure in
exchange for eradicating the brigands and speak with him. He
will give you the sword Qing Long in exchange for the favor.
This is the second of the swords that the swords master in Shu
made and it is just as powerful as Nu Long. Give it to your
    next best warrior.
 3) Return to Cheng Du to save your game if you are having trouble
with the battles in the area. If you want some extra tactical
strength for the upcoming battles you should cut your party to
five members so Zhuge Liang can participate in battles. This
assumes he is your active strategist.
 4) Follow the path to the east and then the north when you are on
the far side of the mountains to Jian Ye castle. Here you will
battle Sun Quan and his men.

Jian Ye Castle (Invite, Gullwing)
 Palace, Headquarters, Historian
 Inn (40 Gold Each), Provisions
Blacksmith (Crossbow, Lance, Splint M, Iron H)
Merchant (Resurrect, Elixir D, Gullwing, Smoke Pot)
 1) Battle Sun Yi at the first gate. (Easy)
    - Sun Yi
    - Rebel Force x4
If your strategist casts Ce Mian begin the battle by casting
Bei Ji on the two generals with 240 AP. Have the remaining general
attack Sun Yi. On the following round have all generals attack
Sun Yi and continue until he is defeated. When this happens go
    all-out.
If your strategist knows An Sha have all generals attack
Sun Yi while your smartest general uses An Sha. If it fails
repeat in the next round then go all-out.
 2) Battle Zhou Tai an Xue Zong at the second gate. (Moderate)
    - Zhou Tai
    - Xue Zong
    - Rebel Force x2
If you use one of the strategists with Ce Mian begin the battle
by casting Bei Ji on the two generals using magical swords. Have
all remaining generals attack Zhou Tai. On the next round have
all generals attack Zhou Tai then go all-out. If you are wounded
after the battle find a band of rebels and use Jin Xian to heal.
If your strategist knows An Sha have all generals make normal
attacks against Xue Zong while one or two of your smartest
officers casts An Sha on Zhou Tai. Repeat if Zhou Tai does not
    die, then go all-out.
 3) Battle Sun Huan, Xu Sheng, and Lu Ji at the third gate. (Moderate)
    - Sun Huan
    - Xu Sheng
    - Lu Ji
    - Rebel Force x2
If you are using a Ce Mian strategist begin the battle by casting
Bei Ji on all officers. On the next round have your two strongest
generals attack Xu Sheng and Lu Ji to drop them below 10,000
soldiers. Have one or two of your smartest officers cast
Huo Shen. Have all remaining officers attack Sun Huan. On the
next round all officers should attack Sun Huan but the officer or
officers that you have casting Huo Shen. Continue with this
pattern until two of your opponents are defeated then go all-out.
Remember to keep enough TPs to heal.
If your strategist uses An Sha begin the battle by having your
two smartest officers cast An Sha on Sun Huan and Xu Sheng. Have
the general riding Chi Tu Ma cast Ji Mian and maintain it until
Sun Huan is defeated. Have all remaining officers attack Lu Ji.
If Sun Huan or Xu Sheng live through the first round, have the
general cast An Sha on them again. When two of your three
opponents are defeated go all-out. Return to Jin Du to rest and
if you are not confident return to Cheng Du to save.
 4) At the castle you will meet Sun Quan who reveals his plans to
conquer Shu and then betray and attack Wei. He tells you he is
ready to die for his ambitions and orders his men to attack.
 5) Battle Tai Si [Taishi] Ci and Lu Sun [Xun] at the castle. (Very Hard)
    - Tai Si Ci
    - Lu Sun
    - Rebel Force x3
If your strategist knows Ce Mian you should have the general that
is riding Chi Tu Ma cast and maintain it until Lu Sun is defeated.
Cast Bei Ji on your two fastest warriors and have them use Power
Pills on Lu Sun. On the next round attack Lu Sun with enough
generals using Power Pills to defeat him. If this takes another
round then do so in the next. When Lu Sun is near defeat or is
defeated have all available generals attack Tai Si Ci. When Tai
Si Ci falls below 10,000 soldiers and Lu Sun is defeated you may
    go all-out.)
If your strategist uses An Sha you should have all warriors
attacking Lu Sun with Power Pills while one or two of your smartest
warriors cast An Sha on Tai Si Ci. It will probably work on the
first try and the second will probably be wasted on Lu Sun, but
on a very rare occasion it will kill both of them. Use Power
Pills with all available generals on Lu Sun until he is defeated.
When both Lu Sun and Tai Si Ci are defeated you can go all-out.
Lu Sun may cast Ji Mian. If he does you should cast Ji Mian as
well assuming Tai Si Ci is alive. Attack Tai Si Ci with An Sha
while Zhuge Liang uses An Sha on Lu Sun. When Ji Mian wears
off go back to the strategy above. It is best to do this battle
with a strategist that knows Ce Mian.
 6) Battle Sun Quan at the castle. (Very Hard *)
    - Sun Quan
    - Rebel Force x4
If your strategist knows Ce Mian begin the battle by casting it
and maintaining it as long as you have TPs to spare. Make sure
you have enough TPs to heal if needed. Have your two strongest
generals attack Sun Quan while the two remaining officers cast
Bei Ji on them. In the following rounds have all available
officers attack Sun Quan. If you run out of enough spare TPs
to cast Ce Mian start using Power Pills to end the battle
quickly. When Sun Quan is defeated go all out.
If you are using a strategist that knows An Sha you should
have the general that uses Chi Tu Ma cast Ji Mian and maintain
it as long as Sun Quan is above 10000 soldiers. Have all other
officers attack Sun Quan with Power Pills. Do not bother casting
An Sha on Sun Quan, he is immune to its effects. In the following
rounds continue using Power Pills on Sun Quan until he is
    defeated, then go all-out.
       * If you too wounded for this battle, but strong enough to
survive a few rounds, there is a trick you can use to make this
battle easier. If you can retreat from this battle or successfully
cast Gui Huan, you can return and rest. If you do this and return
you will also find that you no longer have to face Tai Si Ci and
Lu Sun. You start the battle against Sun Quan. This also allows
you to hire Tai Si Ci or Lu Sun before facing Sun Quan.
 7) Rest at the inn.
 8) Speak with the people.
 9) A resident tells you that Cao Pi spreads his family between his
castles allowing him to hear of all that happens.
 10) They remind you that you are entering the land of Wei and they
suggest that you watch your back.
 11) The residents hope you defeat Cao Pi before it is too late.
 12) Residents are thankful that Wu will finally see peace.
 13) Go to the merchant's shop and restock on Gullwings along with
Elixir Ds and Smoke Pots if you use them. Sell your old armor
and helmets, but remember to hold on to your Steel H. Do this
only if you will have around 310,000 money after selling these
items. This will insure that you have enough to replace your
sold equipment. If you do not have enough you may want to fight
    in Wu until you do.
 14) Invite Liu Bei and save your game.
 15) Liu Bei thanks you for all you have done and realizes that you
are tired from so many battles, but he urges you to move on into
    Wei to finally unite China.

- CHAPTER IX - WEI, THE GREAT PLAINS -
--------------------------------------

Guang Ling Castle
 Inn (40 Gold Each)
 Blacksmith (Lance, Plate M)
Merchant (Resurrect, Elixir D, Gullwing, Power Pill)
 1) Battle Xia Hou Yuan at the gate. (Very Easy)
    - Xia Hou Yuan
    - Rebel Force x4
Xia Hou Yuan can be defeated with normal physical attacks. Once
you drop him below 10,000 soldiers he is no longer a serious threat.
If you are weak you may want to use a Power Pill or two to speed
up this process. Continue attacking Xia Hou Yuan until he is
defeated or go all-out if you don't mind losing a few more
    soldiers. 6260 Exp, 10690 Gold, 49500 Rations.
 2) Battle Zhang Liao and Cao Zhen at the gate. (Hard)
    - Zhang Liao
    - Cao Zhen
    - Rebel Force x3
You should begin by defeating Zhang Liao as fast as possible.
You should be using a Ce Mian type strategist for this battle.
On the first round cast and maintain Ce Mian while you have two
officers cast Bei Ji on your strongest warriors. Have those
warriors use Power Pills on Zhang Liao. On the round after that,
maintaining Ce Mian if Zhang Liao is still alive, you should have
all available generals attack Zhang Liao again. When Zhang falls
go all-out after healing if needed. If you do not have Ce Mian
you should use Power Pills with all available generals to defeat
Zhang Liao. 10180 Exp, 12530 Gold, 65500 Rations.
 3) Rest at the inn.
 4) Speak with the people.
 5) There is a man named Jiang Wei and he asks if Zhuge Liang is
present. If you say yes he will admit to you how much he admires
the great strategist and asks if he may accompany you so that he
might learn from him. If you accept, he will join you.
 6) A lady complains that he has cut her foot on something under a tree.
 7) One of the residents is upset because he has lost the sword that
    he stole from some bandits.
 8) Search under the eastern tree in the middle area of the town to
find the sword Bo Ye. You should give the blade to your third
best warrior, but not to the general you use to cast tactics.
 9) Restock on Power Pills, Elixir Ds, and Gullwings while you revive
any generals that Zhang Liao may have defeated.
 10) If you have the money you should sell all your outdated armor to
the merchant in favor of the Plate Ms that are now available.
You may want to get this armor before moving on in the game.
 11) Return to Jian Ye if you wish to save or need to place Jiang Wei
in your active party. He is a very good general and probably the
best person to give Chi Tu Ma to. He is good at avoiding tactics
and will rarely go second when he carries this item. Jiang Wei
is also the best An Sha type strategist in the game.

He Fei fortress
 1) Battle Cao Zhi at the gate. (Moderate)
    - Cao Zhi
    - Rebel Force x4
You should treat Cao Zhi as Zhang Liao's equal when it comes to
their ability to cause damage. Winning will not be difficult, so
the objective becomes victory with no deaths. It is best to begin
the battle using a strategist that knows Ce Mian. Cast Ce Mian
when the battle begins and maintain it until Cao Zhi is defeated.
This will also prevent him from healing. If you want to move on
to the fortress immediately after the battle you may want to use
some Power Pills to reduce the TP loss. When you have defeated
Cao Zhi go all-out. If you are using one of the An Sha strategists
you should simply use Power Pills with all available generals to
defeat Cao Zhi. 7255 Exp, 11105 Gold, 47400 Rations.
 2) Battle Cao Pi, Cao Ren, and Xia Hou Dun at the gate. (Hard)
    - Cao Pi
    - Cao Ren
    - Xia Hou Dun
    - Rebel Force x2
Cao Pi will catch you off guard every time you fight him, so all
you can do is hope for the best. He uses Ji Mian or An Sha on the
first round with surprising consistency, so you must plan around
whatever may happen on the first round. If you are using a Ce Mian
type strategist you should cast and maintain the tactic as long as
Cao Pi and Xia Hou Dun remain in the battle. Have your other
warriors cast Bei Ji on themselves. On the next round have all
available officers use Power Pills on Cao Pi. When you defeat
Cao Pi make normal attacks on Dun until he falls then go all-out.
Make sure you save some TPs for healing any damage done to you and
your allies. You should not use an An Sha type strategist for this
battle, but if you do cast and maintain Ji Mian while you defeat
Cao Pi with Power Pills. Use An Sha to defeat Cao Ren.
    18125 Exp, 13150 Gold, 72700 Exp.
 3) Cao Pi admits that he is impressed with your power, but he swears
that he will be back with reinforcements.
 4) Speak with the people.
 5) If you are weak return to Jian Ye castle to rest and save your game.
If strong, continue down the path to battle Cao Pi at Ru Nan castle.

Ru Nan castle
 Palace, Headquarters, Historian
 Inn (30 Gold Each), Provisions
Blacksmith (Lance, Plate M, Steel H)
 Merchant (Resurrect, Gullwing, Elixir D)
  1) Battle Cao Xiu and Cao Chun at the first gate. (Very Easy)
    - Cao Xiu
    - Cao Chun
    - Rebel Force x3
This battle is nothing serious. If you are not very powerful you
should focus attacks on Cao Chun until he is defeated an then go
all-out. If your party is on a high level you should simply go
all-out then use Jin Xian once in a random battle to heal your wounds.
If An Sha is available you should take Cao Chun's head and then go
    all-out. 11770 Exp, 10865 Gold, 39600 Rations.
 2) Battle Xia Hou Shang and Xia Hou De at the second gate.
    - Xia Hou Shang
    - Xia Hou De
    - Rebel Force x3
This battle is not much more difficult than the one you just faced
at the first gate. If you are powerful simply go all-out and use
Jin Xian to heal your wounds in a random battle. If you are weak
concentrate your attacks on Xia Hou De until he falls then go all-out.
If the strategist you have selected uses An Sha you should have your
two smartest officers cast it on Xia Hou Shang, you may even defeat
him. Go all-out after the first round. Use Ji Mian once before
going all-out if you are weak so you can reduce the damage caused
to your side. 13593 Exp, 10672 Gold, 51600 Rations.
 3) Battle Cao Pi, Cao Zhang, Cao Ang and Xia Hou Mao at the gate. (Very Hard)
    - Cao Pi
    - Cao Zhang
    - Cao Ang
    - Xia Hou Mao
    - Rebel Force
Cao Pi kept his promise and now you are faced with a real battle.
As before he will catch you off guard so you may need to modify
your usual strategies if one of your officers dies on the first
round. Do no use an An Sha type strategist for this battle.
Ce Mian should be cast and maintained until Cao Pi is defeated.
On the first round have all available officers cast Bei Ji on
themselves. On the following rounds use Power Pills to defeat
Cao Pi then Cao Zhang. When Cao Ang and Xia Hou Mao are the only
remaining officers go all-out. If you are weak you should remove
Xia Hou Mao as well before taking any additional steps. If you
have a skilled strategist available in battle you may want to
cast Huo Shen for a good chance at hitting most opposing generals.
Make sure you save enough TPs to heal in an emergency.
If you did decide to use an An Sha user you should use Power
Pills to defeat the opponents starting with Cao Pi and following
up with Cao Zhang, Xia Hou Mao, and Cao Ang. You should target
Cao Ang and Xia Hou Mao with An Sha and it is usually best to
maintain Ji Mian as long as any opposing officers are alive.
 4) After you defeat Cao Pi Si Ma Yi will arrive with his army and
attack Cao Pi. Cao Pi, who was not expecting Si Ma Yi's betrayal,
will try to flee but fail. Si Ma Yi will claim Wei for himself
and give you Cao Pi's head to take back to Jian Ye. He casts a
thunder spell that you cannot counter and next thing you know you
are inside Jian Ye's inn. The inn owner will wake you and tell
you that Liu Bei is searching for you.
 5) Liu Bei explains that Guan Suo found you passed out in the field
and returned you to the castle. He suggests that you go to Chang
    Sha castle to thank him.
 6) At Chang Sha castle you will meet Guan Suo. He will tell you how
to counter Si Ma Yi's magic. Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Up Down.
Guan Suo:  "Si Ma Yi's thunder tactic is one of the tactics in Sun
Zi's book. I know the counter-spell. Up, up, down, down, left,
right, up, down. Do this when he's calling the thunder and it will
be negated."  During the battle Si Ma Yi will tell you that you
can't defend against his thunder, then when you confirm it will
make the confirmation noise, but no text will appear. Hit the key
sequence at this time and you will counter his spell.
 7) Make Zhuge Liang your strategist and return to Ru Nan castle to
battle Si Ma Yi. He will again cast his thunder, but there will
be a pause after he does so. You must enter the counter spell in
this time. If you succeed Si Ma Yi will realize that his spell
has failed and he will attack you. If you fail you will once
again be in Jian Ye's inn.
 8) Battle Si Ma Yi, Xu Zhu and Dian Wei at the castle. (Very Hard)
    - Si Ma Yi
    - Xu Zhu
    - Dian Wei
    - Rebel Force x2
Si Ma Yi is twice as dangerous as any other officer in Wei. It
is recommended that you use Zhuge Liang as your strategist
whenever you face Si Ma Yi. You will be ambushed and as a result
Si Ma Yi may cause serious damage with his first unrestricted attack.
Cast Ce Mian at the beginning of the battle and maintain it until
you defeat Si Ma Yi. Have all other generals use Bei Ji on them-
selves. On the following rounds use Power Pills on Si Ma Yi until
he is defeated. After he is defeated make normal attacks against
Xu Zhu until he falls then go all-out with Dian Wei.
If your strategist knows An Sha you should begin by casting
Ji Mian. Maintain it as long as Xu Zhu and Dian Wei remain alive.
Have your two smartest officers cast An Sha on Xu Zhu and Dian Wei.
Repeat on the next round if they survive. Attack Si Ma Yi whenever
you can spare an officer. You should conserve your Power Pills for
when Si Ma Yi is nearly defeated. When his soldiers are somewhere
between 7,000 and 10,000 you should attack him with everything
you've got. Make sure you do not kill the Rebels. If he heals
continue attacking him until you get your chance. When Si Ma Yi
casts Wan Fu there is a chance he may target the rebels instead of
himself. If you loose consider making Zhi Ge Liang your strategist.
Note: Dian Wei, although scheduled to appear again in a later
battle, can actually be recruited after your victory here.
    29690 Exp, 14750 Gold, 41200 Rations.
 9) Rest at the inn.
 10) Speak with the people.
 11) Everyone speaks of a place called Chin castle. There are rumors
of two caves that lead under the mountain to this area.
 12) Restock on Gullwings and Elixir Ds at the merchant's shop.
 13) If your money total is above 110,000 you should go to the
merchant's shop and sell all of your Iron Hs. Take the new funds
to the equipment shop and buy everyone some Steel Hs to replace
them. You now have all the best armor in the game.
 14) Use a Gullwing to return to Jian Ye castle and save your game.
If you have not purchased the best armor and helmets available
you should do so at this point. Save up in Wei's fields until
you have enough money if you are short. Smoke Pots may also be
    useful for the next area.
 15) When you are prepared return to Ru Nan with a Gullwing and look
for a passage into the mountain along the southwestern wall.
    Enter the passage.

Secret Mountain Passage (First Cave)
 1) Follow the path until you reach a fork in the road, and take the
northern trail. Take the first southern path afterward down to a
treasure chest which contains a Power Pill.
 2) Return to the path you were on and continue around the west wall
until it turns east, then follow the northern trail when it splits
off in that direction. Search again to find a Bronze H, then return
to the main path. Continue until you find stairs to Basement 1.
 3) Follow the western path until it curls around to a chest
containing a Smoke Pot, then down the path again and take the
first available north path approaching the stairs (the one
directly north and south of the stairs are both dead ends).
 4) Follow it around the room find stairs leading down to Basement 2.
From here, follow the path back up to Basement 1, then back down
to Basement 2 and around until you reach a fork in the road, the
eastern path being covered with lava. Cross this lava to find
three chests containing, from bottom to top, Wan Sheng (one of
the five swords, AP 190), Plate M, and Bronze H. Give Wan Sheng
to Guan Xing (or another realistic fighter). Zhuge Liang's
Jin Xian is good for healing lava damage. Return to the fork in
the road, then continue north until you find a path leading to
    Basement 3.
 5) Follow the path on Basement 3 until you reach some stairs in the
middle of the room. Continue south beyond these stairs to find
three southern paths. Take the west of the three trails to find
stairs leading back to Basement 2 then continue through the next
two sets of stairs to reach the main floor again. This long trail
takes you out of the cave.
 6) Continue west until you find the second cave.

Secret Mountain Passage (Second Cave)
 1) The first southern path is a dead end, continue west and follow
the path around the room to Basement 1. In Basement one take the
first north in a fork, then follow the stairs to Basement 2.
Take the quick path there back up to Basement 1 and open this
chest to obtain the Halberd (AP 250). The Halberd is the best
weapon in the game, and even though it is only 10 AP higher than
the AP 140 swords, it seems to do considerably more damage. I
give this weapon to Zhao Yun, then forward his sword to Ma Chao.
Ma Chao's goes to Jiang Wei. Return to the fork on Basement 1.
 2) Continue west until you reach another split in the road, then
turn south into a larger room. east of this room you will find
six treasures chests which contain, listed from left to right,
top to bottom: Plate M, Gullwing, Elixir D, Splint M, Iron H,
Steel H. Return to the split in the road, then go west to the
    stairs leading to Basement 2.
 3) Continue down the path until you reach an area with a northeast
path above you, and an option to continue south. Take the north-
east path above you directly to a chest containing Qing Guang
(AP 240). Give Guan Xing's sword to a reserve or backup fighter,
then let him take this stronger weapon. If you have gotten all
items along the way, you should now be equipped with the best
swords and armor available in the game.
 4) Return to the place where the path splits, then go to the south-
east area of the map where you pick up a Gullwing. Continue north
until you find another chest below some stairs containing a Power
Pill. Pass the stairs to pick up an Elixir D. Return to the
stairs and ascend to Basement 1, follow to more stairs leading
to the Main Floor, and then exit the cave.
 5) Follow the bridge to the north, then turn west to Chen Liu Fortress.

Chen Liu Fortress
 1) Battle Niu Jin at the gate. (Very Easy)
    - Niu Jin
    - Rebel Force x3
Go all-out to kill him. If you are using An Sha you may want to
conserve your TP and destroy him with normal attacks unless you
don't mind using Zhuge Liang specifically to heal between battles.
 2) Battle Si Ma Yi, Yang Xiu, and Jang Gan at the fortress. (Very Hard)
    - Si Ma Yi
    - Yang Xiu
    - Jiang Gan
    - Rebel Force x2
Both An Sha and Ji Mian are weak in this battle, so you will want
to make your strategist Zhuge Liang or Pang Tong for Ce Mian.
Your Chi Tu Ma rider should activate Ce Mian right away to keep
Si Ma Yi from healing or using Ji Mian. Use Bei Ji on Zhang Bao,
Zhao Yun, and if you like, Ma Chao using free officers who go
faster. Use Power Pills with only the generals using Bei Ji -
or with everyone if this battle will make you too weak to continue -
and destroy Si Ma Yi before dropping maintenance of Ce Mian.
Defeat Yang Xiu next followed by Jiang Gan. If you have a good
amount of TP left you may want to preserve it to continue to the
next castle, otherwise feel free to prevent Yang Xiu from healing
as well and end the battle. Go all-out once Jiang Gan is the only
remaining officer. ??? Exp, 14080 Gold, 60700 Rations.
 3) Enter and speak with the people.
 4) The next battle is not easy. If you are in poor shape, you will
have to return and rest, then navigate through the caves again
(you can use Smoke Pots to save time). If you feel up to the
challenge though, continue to the next battle without saving
    or returning.
 5) Continue north to Chin Castle.

Chin castle
 Inn (20 Gold Each), Provisions
Merchant (Resurrect, Elixir D, Gullwing, Smoke Pot)

 1) Battle Xun Huo, Li Dian, and Wang Shuang at the castle. (Very Hard)
    - Xun Huo
    - Li Dian
    - Wang Suang
    - Rebel Force x2
If using Ce Mian, cast and maintain the tactic with your
Chi Tu Ma rider starting at the beginning of the battle, Xun Huo
knows An Sha. Cast Bei Ji on Zhang Bao and Zhao Yun, and have
them both use Power Pills on Xun Huo. Following round, still
maintaining Ce Mian, use Bei Ji on Guan Xing and Ma Chao, then
continue to use Power Pills to destroy Xun Huo. Once he is dead
either go all-out, or use tactics and attacks to destroy
    Wang Shuang then Li Dian.
Though this battle is much easier with Ce Mian, it can be
managed with An Sha. If following this tactic, don't bother with
Ji Mian. Use your smartest officers to take Wang Shuang's head,
casting Bei Ji on your two strongest attackers, and have them use
power pills on Xun Huo. In the next round have your smartest
officers target and kill Li Dian (delaying on Wang Shuang if
necessary), have your two strongest attackers use Power Pills
(if possible), and have the remaining two use Bei Ji on them-
selves. Ideally at this point only Xun Huo and two Rebel Force
remain. Continue to use Power Pills to destroy Xun Huo as quickly
as possible, hoping for a little luck between his Ji Mians and
Wan Fus, and you should be able to defeat him. Use Zhuge Liang
if too difficult. 25626 Exp, 13152 Gold, 38800 Rations.
 2) Enter and speak with the people.
 3) When prepared at the Inn, move on north to Luo Yang.

Luo Yang castle (Rebuilt) (Invite)
 Palace, Historian
 1) Battle Dian Wei, Hou Cheng, and Liu Ye at the first gate. (Easy)
    - Dian Wei
    - Hou Cheng
    - Liu Ye
    - Rebel Force x2
Note: Dian Wei can be recruited before this battle! If you have
already enlisted him, you only face Hou Cheng and Liu Ye.
You can clear this battle easily by going all-out and with an
inn a short distance to the south, there's not much reason to do
anything else. If you have reason to be cautious, though, begin the
battle by focusing your attacks on Dian Wei followed by Liu Ye.
If you are using An Sha, have your smartest officers target Liu Ye
while the less intelligent clear Dian Wei and Hou Cheng.
    5418 Exp, 436 Gold, 1100 Rations.
 2) Rest at Chin Castle if you like.
 3) Battle Liu Dai, Chen Qun, and Lu Wen at the second gate.
    - Liu Dai
    - Chen Qun
    - Lu Wen
    - Rebel Force x2
Go all out, or if you have reason to preserve soldiers, using
Ce Mian, keep it active with your Chi Tu Ma rider and use Bei Ji
with all other officers. In following rounds, kill Chen Qun, then
go all-out. If using An Sha, kill Liu Dai and Lu Wen with your
smartest officers while preparing your strongest with Bei Ji.
Once only Chen Qun remains and you have Bei Ji active, go all-out.
    6861 Exp, 412 Gold, 1425 Rations.
 4) Rest at Chin Castle if you like.
 5) Battle Le Xin, Wang Can, and Mao Jie at the third gate. (Easy)
    - Le Xin
    - Wang Can
    - Mao Jie
    - Rebel Force x2
Go all out, or if you have reason to preserve soldiers, using
Ce Mian, keep it active with your Chi Tu Ma rider and use Bei Ji
with all other officers. In following rounds, kill Wang Can,
then go all-out. If using An Sha, kill Le Xin and Mao Jie with
your smartest officers while preparing your strongest with Bei Ji.
Once only Wang Can remains and you have Bei Ji active, go all-out.)
 6) Rest, save your game, and make sure all combat officers are well
supplied with Power Pills. Make Zhuge Liang or Pang Tong your
strategist, then continue to the final castle when you are prepared.
If you are interested in a real challenge, and are familiar with
using An Sha strategists, prepare your standard party under Jiang
Wei, using Zhuge Liang and him both in your active lineup, then
try to defeat the following battles in a row to complete the game.
This is quite possible, but to leave you with one final challenge
(even at level 51) I won't be providing a strategy for it.
 7) Battle Si Ma Shi and Si Ma Zhao at the castle. (Very Hard)
    - Si Ma Shi
    - Si Ma Zhao
    - Rebel Force x3
During the fight the Si Ma brothers will taunt you.
"If you serve us, we can pay you well."
"If you stand by us, we will treat you very well."
"You are strong. But you can't stand against my attack."
"How much does Liu Bei pay you to throw your lives away?"
Make Zhuge Liang your strategist for this battle, An Sha is not
effective against the Si Ma brothers. Have your Chi Tu Ma rider
cast and maintain Ce Mian from the first round (they both have
An Sha, Ji Mian, and Wan Fu) and cast Bei Ji on one of your two
best, and either of your third or fourth best (leaving two uncast).
In the following rounds use Power Pills with the officers that
have Bei Ji active, normal attacks with the other two, and defeat
Si Ma Zhao. Once Si Ma Zhao is defeated, still maintaining
Ce Mian, defeat Si Ma Shi. If you have a chance to preserve any
TP do so, you will need them for the next battle. Don't go all-out
    against the Si Ma brothers.
 8) Battle Si Ma Yi, Yu Jin, Wei Xu, Cheng Yu, and Xu Zhu at the castle
immediately after the defeat of Si Ma Zhao and Si Ma Shi. (Very Hard)
    - Si Ma Yi
    - Yu Jin
    - Wei Xu
    - Cheng Yu
    - Xu Zhu
If using a Ce Mian strategist, cast and maintain Ce Mian at the
beginning of battle using the officer that rides Chi Tu Ma. Have
the two officers with Power Pills remaining (if you followed the
strategy listed for the two-part battle) use the Power Pills on
Si Ma Yi after being boosted with Bei Ji by other officers. Have
everyone else use normal attacks. Keep Ce Mian active while you
kill Si Ma Yi using your remaining Power Pills, then continue on
to Cheng Yu (making sure you don't let good attacks spill over
on Yu Jin). Once Cheng Yu is defeated, you can go all out or kill
them in this order: Xu Zhu, Yu Jin, Wei Xu. If you followed the
strategy below, entering the battle with only Si Ma Yi to fight,
act as listed above only instead have your four combatants cast
Bei Ji on themselves, the Ce Mian user casting it on himself when
he has a chance, using Power Pills to proceed normally from there.
If you are entering the battle with an An Sha strategist use
Zhuge Liang and Jiang Wei to take Cheng Yu's head if you can.
Have other intelligent officers use An Sha on Xu Zhu, Yu Jin,
and Wei Xu in that order. Officers who aren't intelligent enough
to use An Sha can start casting Bei Ji on your best warriors with
Power Pills. Don't bother with Ji Mian in this battle. Continue
working to get Si Ma Yi alone, even if you run out of TPs, killing
Cheng Yu with attacks if necessary, then start using normal attacks
to drop Si Ma Yi. When he gets close to death, start using your
Power Pills to kill him before he can use Wan Fu. It is possible
to defeat Si Ma Zhao and Si Ma Shi followed by Si Ma Yi using an
An Sha strategist, but takes a decent amount of skill and a little
luck. I'll leave that strategy up to you.
Gameplay Tip: You can retreat from the battle against Si Ma Yi
after defeating Si Ma Zhao and Si Ma Shi. Though Si Ma Yi and his
troops heal to full health if you do this, upon return you do not
have to face Si Ma Zhao and Si Ma Shi again. This is an excellent
way to make the ending easier if you are having trouble with the
    dual-battle.
 9) Enter the rebuilt city of Luo Yang, take a look around, and talk
    to the people.
 10) You can save your game, but if you do you will not be able to
fight Si Ma Yi again. You can still explore China. The music you
should now be hearing will also play everywhere else.
 11) Invite Liu Bei.
 12) Speak to him and view the ending. You can see the ending in
    screenshot form here: http://kongming.net/doae/ending/

MTP (Maximum Tactic Points): How It Works

Your MTP is a gauge of your potential maximum tactic points. The higher
your MTP, the more tactics you will be able to use in battle before
losing or having to return to an inn. Each time you gain a level AND
learn a tactic at the same time, your MTP value will increase from 3-5
randomly (yes, restarting works). Make sure you have a tactician in your
party that meets the minimum intelligence requirements for a level-up
tactic to receive its MTP bonus (see the first table of this section).
Fu Bing cannot provide an MTP bonus unless you still have Liu Bei.

Section VI - CONSUMABLE ITEMS
----------------------------------------
Consumable items play a key role in Destiny of an Emperor. Some are
more useful than others. You can easily complete the game, for example,
without using a single healing item. Power Pills, on the other hand,
are so helpful and powerful that you would be foolish not to stock a
full inventory for your warriors. Gullwings are vital for transporting
around China. Smoke Pots and Steeds are also bound to aid you greatly.

 Elixir A      20     Heal 100 Soldiers
Xu Zhou, Qing Zhou, Yang Zhou, Chang An,

 Elixir B      50     Heal 500 Soldiers
Yuan, Nan Yang, Ji Zhou, Wu Ling

 Elixir C     200     Heal 1000 Soldiers
Wu Ling, Chang Sha, Gui Yang, Fu Shui, Luo, Cheng Du

 Elixir D     500     Heal 4500 Soldiers
Jian An, Wu, Jin Du, Jian Ye, Guang Ling, Ru Nan, Chin

Gullwing     100     Teleport between key locations.

Section VII - KEY ITEMS
----------------------------------------
Key items cannot be used except for storyline purposes, but you
will generally need (or want) to get them before moving on.

Gold Key      Opens a floor-panel in Wang Yun's home.
With the Gold Key, return to Wang Yun's home in the northeastern
region of burnt-out Luo Yang. Use it on the bronze-colored
floor tile to obtain the Gemsword.

Gemsword      An ornate sword, good for bribery.
Give to Lu Bu in battle at Yang Zhou castle. After a few
possible attempts he will betray Dong Zhuo and join you.

Intro Letter  Penned by Xu Yuan Zhi for Shui Jing
Grants you permission to meet with Shui Jing,
who resides in Yuan Shu's territory.

Dead Wood     Needed to access Hui Ji Fortress.
Found under tree behind northwest building inside Jian An.
Give to old man in Jian An city with Saltpeter.

Saltpeter     Needed to access Hui Ji Fortress.
Found inside Saltpeter cave, northwest from Jian An.
Give to old man in Jian An city with Dead Wood.

Iron Ore      Needed to craft the finest of swords.
Found inside Mt. Gang Tai. Required by the Swordmaker in
Liu Zheng's territory to craft five magical swords.

Silver Key    Unlocks a Yuan Shao prison.
Purchased from a merchant in northeastern Nan Yang for
4000 gold. Use to free Zhao Yun's family from prison.

Zhou Letter   A letter to Zhao Yun from his sister.
After you free Zhao Yun's sister with the Silver Key,
she gives this to you. Zhao Yun joins after reading it.

Section IX - UNDERSTANDING DAMAGE
----------------------------------------
A basic understanding of damage mechanics in this game serves you well.

You will probably notice quite early on that your damage can vary wildly,
and that after suffering a few blows, your officers become significantly
weaker. You may also notice that some enemy officers are MUCH more
powerful than their stats might lead you to believe when they have a
larger compliment of troops. This occurs because there are what we will
call 'damage checkpoints' in Destiny of an Emperor.

   1) 100
   2) 1000
   3) 10000

Easy enough to remember. At 100 soldiers, an officer is likely to do
twice the damage he could manage at 99. Same case for 1000 and 10000.
This is easy to see in action at the beginning of the game. In battle,
pick out a Rebel Force. He is probably hitting you for 5-6 damage.
Smack him once to knock him down below 100 soldiers. His damage will
fall to the 2-3 range. Early on, this is an excellent use for light
hitters such as Chen Deng and Han Zhong. In later battles (e.g. Lu Guang
or Wen Hun and Yan Liang) beginning battle by bringing all enemies
below 1000 soldiers will make combat easier for you.

Section X - SEARCHABLE TREASURES
----------------------------------------
Throughout the game there are some cleverly hidden items. You quickly
learn to search under wells, but you might not guess to search east of
them. And who would guess that some great items might be found at the
end of paths in town? All known town treasures are listed below.

Mt. Da Xing   Ax          Center tent, northeast pot.
Tie Man Xia   Ax          Western tent, inside chest.
D.Zhuo Area   Chi Tu Ma   From Fan Shui Guan, 1 space south, 8 west.*
Hu Lao Guan   Ax          Eastern tent, leftmost pot in northeast corner.
Yang Zhou     Club        Southern central home, above pot.
Chen Cang     Spear       Northeast building, inside a chest.
Nan Yang      Trident     Northeast of palace at the path's end.
Guang Zong    Sabre       Below well in middle of town.
Wu Ling       Bow         Below well in upper area of town.
Chang Sha     Sword       Below well near the town's entrance.
Gui Yang      Sword       Below well in eastern area of town.
Ling Ling     Sword       In house outside town under occupant's feet.
Luo           Battleax    Below well in northernmost area of town.
Cheng Du      Scimitar    One step east of palace entrance, by tree.
Jian An       Dead Wood   Behind northwestern house, below the lone tree.
Jian An       Scimitar    Behind northwestern house, above the lone tree.
Hui Ji        Scimitar    Southwestern tent, one pot left of rightmost pot.
Wu            Crossbow    Right-hand side of town well.
Wu            Splint M    Eastern end of road outside the inn.
Guang Ling    Bo Ye       Under the outcropped eastern tree of town.

*1 After fighting this officer, you will never face them again.
*2 After defeating Pang De, he travels to Wei. In Wei, ironically,
you can finally hire him, he has no tactics, and Shu soldiers.
*3 Guan Ping appears at the entrance of the first cave in Dong
Zhuo's territory, but only after you have found the Gold Key.
*4 Members of the Wei Cao family join only after Cao Pi's death.
*5 You face Lu Meng in a few cities, but you never get a chance
to hire him, and you cannot encounter him randomly.
*6 Dian Wei appears in two battles as an enemy officer, Ru Nan
Castle under Sima Yi, and later in command of Luo Yang's
second gate. You can recruit him after Ru Nan, and if you do,
he won't participate at Luo Yang's gate! (Thanks, Chzn8r!)

Section XII - LEVEL UPS

Experience required for each level-up.

 8  602          25 51944         42 380417
 9  897          26 60045         43 421365
 10 1267         27 68956         44 466408
 11 1811         28 78759         45 515956
 12 2518 *1      29 89542         46 549978
 13 3438         30 101403        47 627686
 14 4634         31 114451 *2     48 687775
 15 6189         32 128730        49 750868
 16 8210         33 144591        50 817116
 17 10636        34 161957        51 999999 *3
 51-55 ...? *4

*1 On level 12 you would learn the tactic, Fu Bing. Xu Zhe (Shu)
would learn this tactic, but because it is impossible to have
him at this level, you probably won't see a message saying the
tactic has been learned, or gain any MTP bonus for the level.
It can, however, be obtained if you reach this level with Liu
Bei in your party (it would have to be a deliberate painful
process), thus getting MTP credit for this level. more info:
    http://kongming.net/doae/secrets/mtp/
*2 On level 31 Pang Tong and Zhuge Liang learn the Ce Mian
tactic -- the highest-level tactic in the game. You will not
learn new tactics from this point, and the MTP value you
have after this level will be your permanent MTP value for
    the rest of the game.
*3 Only availalbe by speaking to sage behind Ji Zhou castle
when at level 50, then accepting his bonus level up. Doing
so sets your experience to 999,999, but actually reaching
999,999 normally does not increase your level to 51.
*4 A Taiwan remake of Destiny of an Emperor for Windows allows
your level to reach 55 through regular gameplay, but this
cannot be done in the English, Chinese, or Japanese versions.
It is unclear if you can reach level 56 through the sage.

Presenting a mostly-complete listing of the average Experience, Gold

really useful at all for casual play, but if you are trying to time a
