I dedicate this to the NES fans out there, as this one is part of the NES
FAQ completion Project of 2004-2007, courtesy of the FAQ Contributor Board.
We honour the most truly awesome and great system... the Nintendo
Entertainment System! Never mind about Atari, Commodore 64, Colecovision,
Sega Master System, Super Nintendo Entertainment System, Sega Genesis, or
any of the newer systems, we all know that the good old NES is where true
gaming is at!
Also, for Cougar, Howler, and Koonce. I miss you, and I hope you are living
it up in the afterlife as you did in this world. You will always be in my
memories, and you will never be forgotten.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
1) King Suren has seen his country ravaged by war. The terrible King Ogreth
has taken out the majority of Suren's forces, killing most while
imprisoning the few survivors in P.O.W. camps and magically transforming
them into trees and rocks. King Suren must rescue his remaining troops
(up to 50 in total) while he performs a last resort attack. Only one
King will stand at the end... will it be the evil magician Ogreth? Or
will it be the valiant King Suren? Only you can help guide Suren and his
forces, enabling their assault to succeed!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------Controls------------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
2) This section will list all of the controls you will need to overthrow the
evil King Ogreth, restoring the rightful ruler of Suren to the throne!
D-Pad : Moves King Suren and the Allied Units around the screen.
SELECT : No apparent use.
START : Starts the game at the title screen.

3) This section will examine the Battlefield display, what each piece of
information means, and how battles are decided.

a = Remaining number of enemy forces on the battlefield.
b = Remaining number of allied forces that are hidden in rocks, trees, and
held in P.O.W. camps in the battlefield.
c = The allied units that are currently being controlled. Only the sprites
that are shown in this box can be controlled at that point in time.
d = This counter shows how many times that game has been completed with blue
blocks as the counting mechanism.
e = The battlefield area, where the enemy and allied units wage war to
decide whether King Ogreth or King Suren will reign supreme.
f = The remaining distance to the location of King Ogreth, safe inside the
castle.
g = The attack strength of King Suren. It begins at 220, capable of rising
as high as 320.
h = When a battle occurs, the power of the two units is displayed here. The
number on the left is the allied unit's power, the number on the right
is the enemy unit's power.
o------------------o
| How Battles Work |
o------------------o
When two units occupy the same space (this has to be initiated by King Suren
or one of the Allied Units), a battle will occur. The power levels of the
two combatants will be stacked up against one another, creating a base value
for each unit:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~ EXAMPLE ~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Allied Unit at 120 power vs. Enemy Unit at 10 power
Allied unit gets a base score of 12 vs. Enemy unit gets a base score of 1
With a 11 point lead, you would figure the Allied unit will be fine, but
their is a random number generator that rears it ugly head, giving each
score a boost. At this point the unit with the highest scoring combined
number will survive the encounter. This means that it is possible for a 10
power level unit to beat a much more powerful unit, so never take any battle
for granted.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------Allied Units---------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
4) This section will examine King Suren, Soldiers, and Knights. Their
special skills will be examined in addition to their power levels.
o------------o
| King Suren |
o------------o
The main character, he is the one who must survive all of the battles. If
he falls to the enemy, then the game will end, requiring you to start all
over in your charge to retake the country and castle.
King Suren has the special ability to touch rocks and trees in the field,
and if an Allied Unit has been transformed into the object, he will regain
his human form, joining the King in his efforts! King Suren also happens to
be the only unit capable of knocking down the enemy walls at the 100 m
intervals, so have him lead the charge into new areas of the battlefield.
Remember, defeat of King Suren will result in...
| Soldier |
o---------o
These knife wielding weaklings are the more numerous of the Allied Units.
They are quite prolific at dying, but if they survive three battles, they
will be promoted to gold coloured Soldiers (see the Power Chart below to
see why they are weak and to see how much they improve).
Soldiers have one special ability, which is a unique ability to reduce the
Guard enemy attack power from 100 down to 10. Although it is not useful
until the last 100 meters of the game, it can make navigating the narrow
passages of the castle far easier to perform. Soldiers also happen to be
the only unit that can remove the Trap squares from the field, while all
other units will be instantly killed for touching them (make sure to clear
these dangers at the earliest opportunity).
o--------o
| Knight |
o--------o
The heavily armored, broad sword wielding are rather rare to locate, as they
can only be found by having Suren look amongst the rocks and trees. They
start out decently strong, and they gain even greater abilities upon
becoming gold coloured Knights (see the Power Chart below for specifics).
Knights are the only unit capable of breaking through the barriers
surrounding the P.O.W. camps, meaning only they can release the five
Soldiers that are always contained within such locations. This makes them
invaluable, as they can really bolster the forces for Suren through out the
battlefield.
o-------------o
| Power Chart |
o-------------o
i) King Suren will always gain 10 power for each victory he has on the
battlefield, maxing out at 320.
ii) Soldiers will gain 10 power for their first two victories. Their third
victory will result in a 90 power gain, which is signified by their
gold colour. They will proceed to gain 10 power from each battle after
that, topping out at a 310 power level.
iii) Knights will gain 10 power for their first two victories. Their third
victory will result in a 90 power gain, which is signified by their
gold colour. They will proceed to gain 10 power from each battle after
that, topping out at a 310 power level.
___________ _______ _____________ _____________ _____________ _________
| Unit Name | Power | 1st Victory | 2nd Victory | 3rd Victory | Maximum |
|___________|_______|_____________|_____________|_____________|_________|
|King Suren | 220 | 230 | 240 | 250 | 320 |
|___________|_______|_____________|_____________|_____________|_________|
| Knight | 150 | 160 | 170 | 260 | 310 |
|___________|_______|_____________|_____________|_____________|_________|
This means that trying to train the various found units is a very important
and worthy effort, as the longer they fight for King Suren, the longer King
Suren goes without having to risk direct battle himself.
5) This section will examine each enemy in the game, listing power levels,
--------------------------------Obstacles-----------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
6) This section will examine the various obstacles that dot the landscape of
the Suren battlefield.
o-------------o
| Brick Walls |
o-------------o
These purple obstacles can impede the progress of Suren's forces, they also
are the material that Summoner's use to call up Shades to attack your units
with.
o--------o
| Bushes |
o--------o
These obstructions are found right outside the castle, and they are the only
small plant obstacle that do not contain hidden forces.
o-------------o
| Giant Trees |
o-------------o
These 2x2 square trees will hold back Knights and Soldiers, but King Suren
is capable of plowing right through them, clearing the path for allies and
enemies alike.
o--------------o
| Prison Gates |
o--------------o
The blue bars will separate the captive Soldiers (and their Mage guards)
from King Suren, so use Knights to knock them aside and release the
contained brethren soldiers.
o-------o
| Rocks |
o-------o
Somewhat uncommon, these objects can hold soldiers, so bump them with King
Suren to reveal the allies held within.
o-------o
| Trees |
o-------o
Smaller trees can hold allied troops, so bump them with King Suren. The
bunched trees will narrow the pathway for a while, so pass through them with
trepidation as the enemy will be able to blockade these areas effectively.
battle area conditions, enemy forces, and battle advice for the Allied
Units.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~ Battle Advice ~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
i) Bump into every tree that appears along the way, as King Suren begins
battle by himself. The longer has to fight the enemy on his own, the
more likely he will be defeated.
ii) King Suren should fight against the Pages/Pink Warriors at the start
though, using their weak attacks to help Suren gain power by defeating
them in battles.
iii) Also be sure to let the Soldier and Knights (especially the Knights)
try to defeat the Pages, as getting them promoted will boost their
power levels significantly, making them more likely to survive for
longer periods of time.
iv) Draw the Mages towards Suren to let the Knights work them over. This
assures Suren remains safe and the Soldiers do not accidentally engage
the stronger foe in battle too often.
v) Keep a Knight in reserve, as five soldiers await rescue from the first
P.O.W. Camp at 510m mark. Draw out the foe after busting down the
initial wall, letting King Suren or other allies take some shots at the
Mages.
vi) Have the newly liberated Soldiers try their luck at becoming stronger
by attacking the massive amount of Pages that block the barrier ahead.
vii) Bust down the wall ahead with King Suren when ready to move into the
next area of the battlefield.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~ Battle Advice ~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
i) Continue to add to the army's girth by bumping into the trees. The
Allied Units will constantly be defeated, so keeping a healthy reserve
is highly recommended.
ii) The giant trees are excellent areas for Suren to cut through to avoid
battle, particularly if he has few or no reserves. By avoiding battle,
he avoids a potentially untimely end (particularly if he has already
reached his maximum power level of 320).
iii) Get any promoted units powered up based off of the weaker enemy units
(the Mages and Pages specifically), as getting some powerful veterans
will be very handy later on in the battle.
iv) Keep a Knight in reserve, as five soldiers await rescue from the third
P.O.W. Camp at 410m mark. Draw out the foe after busting down the
initial wall, letting King Suren or other allies take some shots at the
Mages.
v) Have the newly liberated Soldiers try their luck at becoming stronger
by attacking the fair amount of Pages that block the barrier ahead.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Mages (power level 30)
Shades (power level 50)
Summoner (power level 30)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~ Battle Advice ~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
i) Keep on bumping away, though the target is now rocks instead of trees.
Constant reinforcements will yield the necessary cushion to keep Suren
safe for long stretches of the battle.
ii) The Summoner with his Shades will rear his ugly face here, so trigger
the Shades by walking by with Suren, followed by freezing him in place.
Move in close to kill the Summoner, which will make the Shades
disappear without any direct battle, which is the preferred method as
they are quite powerful.
iii) Make sure to only release one Summoner at a time, or the massive amount
of Shades will become too difficult to dodge.
iv) Keep a Knight in reserve, as five soldiers await rescue from the next
P.O.W. Camp at 310m mark. Draw out the foe after busting down the
initial wall, letting King Suren or other allies take some shots at the
Mages.
and even more brick wall maze conditions to navigate.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~ Enemies ~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Gold Knights (power level 100)
Mages (power level 30)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~ Battle Advice ~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
i) Navigate the purple brick section with great care, making sure all
units get through without getting hung up. Leaving troops behind is
never a good idea, so it is best to move one unit type at a time to
make Suren does not scroll anybody off the screen by accident.
ii) The Gold Knights will attack early in this wave, and they are
among the most powerful units in the game. Let promoted Soldiers and
Knights tackle them, keeping the veteran Knights in reserve in case
those units fail. Suren is in some danger with these guys around, so
it is best he avoid skirmishes if at all possible.
iii) Although it may be tempting, running through with Suren would be
unadvisable, as he will be left fighting solo, and both Knights and
Soldiers have roles to play in the future. Instead, try to use a few
units to block the passages that the Gold Knights are coming from, as
that can allow Suren to advance past the area, trapping the Gold
Knights.
iv) Keep a Knight in reserve, as five soldiers await rescue from the fourth
P.O.W. Camp at 210m mark. Draw out the foe after busting down the
initial wall, letting King Suren or other allies take some shots at the
Mages.
v) Bust down the wall ahead with King Suren when ready to move into the
next area of the battlefield.
Mages (power level 30)
Pages (power level 10)
Warriors (power level 50)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~ Battle Advice ~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
i) Try to find every last Allied Unit at this point, as the time for
recruiting randomly transformed Soldiers and Knights (especially these
powerhouses) is quickly coming to an end. The more fighters on King
Suren's side, the more likely he is to make it into the castle.
ii) By the same measure, make sure all units are able to navigate through
the nasty tangle of prickly vegetation, as losing large portions of the
army is not acceptable, and it weakens your chances of success by quite
a margin.
iii) Keep a Knight in reserve, as five soldiers await rescue from the final
P.O.W. Camp at 510m mark. Draw out the foe after busting down the
initial wall, letting King Suren or other allies take some shots at the
Mages.
iv) Have the newly liberated Soldiers try their luck at becoming stronger
by attacking the massive amount of Pages that block the barrier ahead.
v) Bust down the wall ahead with King Suren when ready to move into the

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~ Battle Advice ~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
i) Although it may seem like more troops can be obtained from the bushes
outside of the castle, sadly it is not the case. I guess King Ogreth
is unable to conjure bush forms for those he has defeated on the
battlefield.
ii) After carefully moving through the bush garden outside of the castle,
let the Knights lead the way, as the first foes to attack are Gold
Knights. King Suren should follow them in, with the Soldiers bringing
up the rear.
iii) Keep making the Knights blast the Gold Knights out of the way,
eventually reaching small groups of Guards. To take out these equally
dangerous foes, move the Soldiers to the front to tackle them, as they
are able to reduce the power rating of the Guards down to 10 (from the
original level of 100), making them far less dangerous to tackle in
combat.
iv) Once the throne room is located, eliminate all of the Guards with
Soldiers before bringing in King Suren, as his presence will unleash
the Shades from the Summoner.
v) Defeat the Summoner to get rid of the Shades, leaving King Ogreth by
himself. Begin by attacking with the Soldiers, then the Knights, and
finally use King Suren if he is all that remains. The reason to do
this is that the lower soldiers may get lucky in their attacks, and by
trying this tactic will not put King Suren into mortal danger unless
forced to. Defeat of King Ogreth will result in...
| Second Loop Onwards |
o---------------------o
The advice given above remains the same (as does the general level layout),
but there is one major change. The Trap squares will now be in play, and if
any Knight or King Suren steps on one of these spots, they will be defeated
immediately. This means that Soldiers should be used to clear these
potential hazards out as soon as the square appears, keeping the road safer
for the heavier hitters in the armed forces!
See how many times you can loop the game! The counter stops after five
trips through the game however, so you will have to keep count yourself
after that.
