Super Sidekicks is a soccer simulation series for the Neo Geo system. You can
play a game against the computer or a second human player, or enter into a
World Cup-style tournament to win the aptly titled "SNK Cup". There are 12
teams to choose from, though none really hold an advantage over the others
aside from each individual team's formation. The most annoying quirk about
the game is how you can not manually switch players during the game; the
computer does it for you, and it often times leads to much confusion.
Nonetheless, if you are a soccer fan, it would be fun to see how this series
started off, so check it out!

Game Modes
==========
At the title screen, after you press Start, there will be a couple of quick
options you can set. You can choose the difficulty (Easy, Normal, Hard, or
MVS), and how long each period is (0:30 to 8:00). Once you do that, press the
A button and you will go to the list of game modes:
SNK Cup: This is the main tournament mode. You can select from the 12 teams,
divided into two groups. You then play against each team in your
group in order to reach the semi-finals. Win that match and you
will face the other top-ranked team for a chance to win the SNK Cup
in the finals. Win the final match and you win the SNK Cup!
VS Mode: Play a single game against another human player. You will have the
option of picking the Super Star team here.
Exhibition Mode: Play a single game against the computer. You will have the
option of picking the Super Star team here.
Once you select a game mode, you will be able to pick from 12 teams to play
as. The only notable difference between the teams is their formation.

General Gameplay
================
The main mode of play is the SNK Cup mode, of course. It is set up in a
tournament setting. There are 12 teams total in this installment of Super
Sidekicks, and they are split into two groups of six. You play against a
random team in your same group until you play all of them, then you go on to
the semi-finals and then the finals.
The games are split into two periods with 3 minutes (3:00) apiece (you can
change these settings when you start the game). You do not have the option to
switch your players manually during the game; you generally have control of
the person closest to the ball.
During the actual game, your team's available actions will depend on if you
are on the offense (possessing the ball currently) or defense (other team has
the ball). Those controls are as follows:
Offense: A - Long kick/shoot (good for longer passes in the air; shoot
when prompt appears above player's head)
B - Short kick/pass (good for short, quick passes)
Defense: A - Slide (this is how you steal the ball from an opponent)
B - Tackle (knock over an opposing player to steal the ball)
Generally, the game will give you control of the player closest to the ball.
This can become particularly annoying because the other players are computer
controlled, and you can become confused over who you are controlling rather
quickly. Each team also has a player designated as an Ace, who is the best
player on that team.
In some games, the turf/weather can determine how well the teams perform. In
rainy weather, everyone generally runs more slowly and sliding is not nearly
as effective. On fields with artificial turf (it has more of a blue-green
color as opposed to regular grass), you tend to run faster.
If the ball goes out of bounds during play, by bouncing off the goal posts or
being kicked out accidentally, possession of the ball goes to the opposing
team. Basically, if your team was the last to touch the ball as it went out
of bounds, the other team will get the ball. To return the ball to play, it
will be kicked/thrown in, either from the sides or by the goal keeper,
depending on where and how the ball went out of bounds.
If you are on the defense and the opposition is approaching your goal, you
unfortunately do NOT have much manual control of the goal keeper. He will
move automatically to try and block the ball, but tends to take a while
getting up after a diving block, which means you really need other players in
the vicinity to help out. When a goal is made, play resumes at the center
line with the opposing team starting with the ball again.
A HUGE aspect of gameplay is sliding and tackling. It is essential to making
any sort of progress in soccer, since this is how you attempt to steal the
ball from the opposing players. If you tackle, you move a bit more quickly
than with sliding, plus it is more effective so keep that in mind. If the
ball is not under possession by any player, you can simply run up and take it
by touching it. If you slide or tackle, you do not get automatic possession;
you still need to get the ball yourself.
Be careful when sliding/tackling however, since you can actually receive a
foul (there are no yellow/red cards in this game). The team that was fouled
against will get a "free kick" from the area where the foul occurred. This
can be play in your favor if a foul occurs against you near the opposing
goal.
After a game (in SNK Cup mode), the defeated teams in your group will be a
shaded color and you will go on to face the next team in the group. After all
five other teams in your group are defeated, you go on to the semi-finals.
The four best teams go on to play an elimination match, where the winning two
teams go on to the finals. The winner of the final match wins the SNK Cup and
then the game is complete.

Post Game
=========
If in the event a game is tied after the second period ends, you will be
asked to continue. When you say yes (press Start), you will have the option
of how to break the tie. You can either play another full game (Normal Game)
or go right into Penalty Kicks (PK). If you end up losing the game (regular
game or by penalty kicks), you will have the option of continuing. This
allows you to start against the same team without having to replay previous
winning matches.
In Penalty Kick mode, each side takes turns attempting to make a goal. The
view is of the net with the goal keeper in front of it. If it is your turn to
kick, you will be able to hold the joystick in one of three directions and
press A to kick in that direction. If the goal keeper anticipates your aim
and blocks it, you get nothing; if you make it in, you get a goal.
If you are the goal keeper, you need to take a guess at where the opposing
player will kick the ball and move/not move accordingly. This mode is pretty
much completely random, since you can not truly know exactly where the ball
will be kicked and whether or not the opposition will block correctly. After
five tries each, the team with the most goals wins. If there is still a tie,
there will be more single-round penalty kicks where both sides get one turn
and if the tie is broken, you have a winner. Otherwise, this will continue.
