Introduction
------------
Waialae Country Club is one of the better golf simulators for the N64. Though
it has only one course, which is Waialae C.C., it has been accurately
reproduced from its real-life counterpart in Hawaii. The 18-hole course is
quite challenging and can take some time to get used to. Since the release
of this game, the course has changed from a par 72 to a par 70.

Modes
-----
Waialae Open - The main event. This is a four-round tournament like its
real-life counterpart, the Sony Open in Hawaii. There are no handicaps
and every player is at the professional level. Club distances are set
to default and the tournament tees must be played. Player stats are recorded
in this mode.

Tournament - An 18-hole tournament-style play otherwise identical to the Open.

Match Play - A 2-player match in which the score is determined by who wins each
hole, not the stroke total.

Skins - A 2 to 4-player match in which each hole has a money value. The player
who has the most money wins. If a hole is tied, the skin carries over to the
next hole.

Stroke Play - For 1 to 4 players. Otherwise identical to the Open, except player
stats aren't recorded.

Practice - Lets you practice any hole by yourself. One player.

Player Stats
------------
The game keeps player stats for up to ten players. It also keeps the stats for
every hole and the ten best tournament scores. Finally, you can record up to
five "Miracle Shots", such as holes in one, and five other memorable shots
of your choosing.

The Course
----------

OK, onto the good part. The course. For each hole, I show the hole's Par,
distance, and my history of results here, both numerically and graphically.
The relative difficulty of the hole is also given, alongside strategies for
the hole. Time to hit the links!

HOLE  1
=======
Par 5 -- 536 yds
Eagles  -- 7% ===
Birdies --43% =====================
Pars    --37% ===================
Bogeys  -- 9% ====
D.Bogeys-- 3% ==
Others  -- 1% =
Difficulty: Easy

This is a very easy Par 5. The fairway here is extremely generous, starting only
100 yards from the tee box, but O.B. is tight on both sides. If you can get a
decent tailwind here, you have a very good chance at making the green in two.
If your drive was 280 yards or more, take out your 3-wood and go for it. If you
drove a little short of that (say, 250 to 270 yards), then take out a long iron
and lay up to the right of the large bunker guarding front of the green. Even
if you wind up in the bunker if you go for the green, there is no real excuse
for not making a Birdie here. The green is very flat in front, but has a slight
upslope on the back that can make for a fast chip or putt if you go over the
green. If you're playing against human opponents, a Par here is like giving a
stroke back to the field.

HOLE  2
=======
Par 4 -- 380 yds
Eagles  -- 1% =
Birdies --34% =================
Pars    --56% ============================
Bogeys  -- 7% ===
D.Bogeys-- 1% =
Others  -- 1% =
Difficulty: Easy

This is a short Par 4, and a pretty easy one. If you hit your drive close to
300, you should have no more than a 9-iron, or even a wedge, to the green.
However, you can get into pretty big trouble if you pull-hook your drive;
there is a lake that runs down the left side of the fairway, and it can ruin
your chance at Par. On your approach shot, make sure you get over the front
bunker; if you catch the ball fat, it's going to end up there. The green isn't
too bad, and will make putts inside of 15 to 20 feet makeable.

HOLE  3
=======
Par 4 -- 432 yds
Eagles  -- 0%
Birdies --10% =====
Pars    --52% =====================
Bogeys  --30% ===============
D.Bogeys-- 8% ====
Others  -- 2% =
Difficulty: Very Hard

This is the hardest hole on the golf course, especially with a crosswind. You
go on the other side of the lake in the opposite direction from the last hole,
except the lake runs closer to the fairway and up to the left edge of the green.
If you hit your drive or second shot in the water, we're looking at hopefully
a Double Bogey. If you can hit your drive 300 yards, you have a mid to short
iron to this green. If you have a strong tailwind, be very careful about taking
too much club, as there is a ditch running 20 yards past the green, and it marks
O.B. I have hit in that ditch several times before and was lucky to salvage
Bogey out of it. The front and back left are guarded by bunkers, and the fringe
runs off into the lake on the left side, making the final round's pin position
impossible to shoot at. The best bet is to put your second shot in the center of
the green. This green is very undulated, which will cause downhill putts to be
extremely fast, and breaking putts to turn very quickly. You're going to need to
turn over 10 degrees in the other direction to make a 20-foot putt even come
close. Birdies are extremely rare on this hole. Par is a good score here.

HOLE  4
=======
Par 3 -- 216 yds
Eagles  -- 1% =
Birdies --16% ========
Pars    --66% =================================
Bogeys  --14% =======
D.Bogeys-- 2% =
Others  -- 1% =
Difficulty: Medium

After the preivous hole, you get somewhat of a break here. The green on this
hole is the longest on the course and one of the longest in the world. From
front to rear, it measures over 55 yards. This will make your club selection
vary widely from day to day. If the pin is in the back, you're going to need
a 3-wood or 5-wood. This green slopes upward from front to back. There are
three large bunkers on each side of this green that can turn a pulled or
pushed tee shot into a struggle to save Par.

HOLE  5
=======
Par 4 -- 426 yds

Birdies --17% ========
Pars    --54% ===========================
Bogeys  --24% ============
D.Bogeys-- 4% ==
Others  -- 1% =
Difficulty: Hard

There are two ditches on this hole that can give you fits, especially if you hit
the ball a long ways. The first one is about 170 yards out, and will catch your
ball if you top your drive. The second one is about 315 yards out, and
will catch your ball if you hit too far. If you are at the bottom of the hill
in-between the ditches, it can be tough to judge the distance of your second
shot. The green is pretty open, but there is one bunker to watch for on the
left. The green isn't too bad, but it slopes left-to-right. This hole does
not relinquish very many Birdies.

HOLE  6

Par 4 -- 474 yds

Birdies -- 9% ====
Pars    --78% =======================================
Bogeys  --12% ======
D.Bogeys-- 0%
Others  -- 1% =
Difficulty: Medium

This is a very easy hole to get Par on, but very tough to Birdie. You will often
have a crosswind to deal with here. If your drive isn't in the fairway, you just
lost your chance at making the green in regulation. Even after a good tee shot,
you're going to need a wood or long iron to make it to the green. It's not too
tough to putt on, but approach putting is not easy here. You do not want
to make Bogey here.

HOLE  7
=======
Par 3 -- 182 yds

Birdies --14% =======
Pars    --57% ============================
Bogeys  --22% ===========
D.Bogeys-- 5% ==
Others  -- 1% =
Difficulty: Medium

The elevated tee will add a little bit of distance to your tee shot and help
stick the landing where you want it, but that's not a good thing if you end up
short. This green is sloped pretty badly right-to-left, up the hill, and has
bunkers surrounding the front and sides of the green. If you miss long, you will
have a speedy chip; if you end up short or to the side, you have a difficult
bunker shot. This is a tough hole to Birdie unless you hit a superb tee shot.

HOLE  8

Par 4 -- 407 yds

Birdies --15% =======
Pars    --62% ===============================
Bogeys  --18% =========
D.Bogeys-- 3% =
Others  -- 2% =
Difficulty: Medium

On this hole, you will have a tough decision to make from the tee, especially
if there is a strong wind in your face. There is a ditch that runs through the
fairway at about 220 yards out. In most cases, you can make it with a driver,
if you go over the right side of the ditch, which is not as far up, but if
you go too far, there is some nasty rough on the right side. If you make it
over, you have a short iron to the green. If you lay up short, lay up on the
right so you have a decent angle to the green for your second shot. If you hit
into the water, you will lose a stroke and still be out of range of the green.

HOLE  9

Par 5 -- 510 yds

Birdies --50% =========================
Pars    --31% ===============
Bogeys  -- 9% ====
D.Bogeys-- 1% =

Difficulty: Easy

This is a very easy Par 5 very simlilar to the first hole, except for one big
detail--there is a creek running down the right side of the fairway. If you
slice your drive, you can end up in the water. If you hit your drive around
290 to 300 yards, you can go for the green, which is wide open and easy to
putt on. It's not uncommon to get an Eagle here, even if you don't have a
tailwind. During the Sony Open, the tees on this hole are moved up about
30 yards and the hole becomes a monstrous Par 4.

HOLE 10

Par 4 -- 374 yds

Birdies --43% =====================
Pars    --37% ==================
Bogeys  --16% ========
D.Bogeys-- 2% =

Difficulty: Easy

If you have a strong tailwind here, you can drive this green with a power shot.
It is an extremely risky move, though. Even if you make solid contact with the
ball, the hole becomes narrow near the green, with a tree and a bunker guarding
the left side of the green. If your ball hits this tree, it may come down and
land in the bunker, leaving you with a testy 30-yard explosion. On this hole,
I will take driver and a wedge or 9-iron to make it to the green. This is a
very good Birdie opportunity, and certainly a hole to recover momentum on if
you sliced your drive into the creek on the previous hole.

HOLE 11

Difficulty: Easy

At the actual course in Hawaii, there is an excellent view of the Pacific
Ocean from the tee box. Unfortunately, the game does not capture the view.
This is a pretty easy hole, straightforward and slightly downhill. A mid-iron
will land you on the putting surface. It is a fairly level green, making
approach putting easy. You'd have to do something seriously wrong to make a
Bogey here.

HOLE 12

Par 4 -- 446 yds

Birdies -- 8% ====
Pars    --80% ========================================
Bogeys  --11% =====
D.Bogeys-- 1% =

Difficulty: Medium

This is not a very easy hole to get a Birdie on. It is long. If you pull your
drive to the left side of the fairway, you're looking at 200 yards or more
for your second shot. The green isn't exactly flat either, but it's not too bad.
It's pretty tough to get into a lot of trouble here, as this fairway is very
wide.

HOLE 13

Birdies --46% =======================
Pars    --32% ================
Bogeys  -- 6% ===

Difficulty: Very Easy

This is the first of five doglegs on the back nine, and by far the easiest hole
on the course. If the wind is coming from the left, aim your drive for the edge
of the dogleg and let the wind draw it back to the right-center. From here, you
can get to the green with a fairway wood, or even an iron if you crushed your
tee shot far enough. This green is easy to putt on, and not very protected.
You can really get a jump on the field by making an Eagle here, and it's not
very hard to do, even with the wind in your face. But this is the last easy
hole you'll get. At the Sony Open, as with hole 9, the tees have been moved
up slightly and reduced to a Par 4, making this one of the toughest holes on
THAT version of the course.

The second of five doglegs and the start of a series of very difficult holes
on the back nine. Take driver here off the tee and aim for the left side of
the fairway, especially if the wind is blowing left-to-right. Finding the
correct angle for your second shot is the hardest and most important aspect
of this hole.

HOLE 15

Difficulty: Very Hard

This is the second toughest hole on the golf course and one of the hardest
Par 4s under 400 yards in the entire country. O.B. is extremely tight all
down the left side of this hole, and the trees and rough on the right side
is very thick. About 270 yards out, there is a gigantic tree on the right
side in addition to the heavy rough. This combination can turn a sliced
drive into real trouble. To avoid this, take a long iron or 3-wood off the
tee, so even if you end up in the rough on the right side, you have enough
room to hit an iron over it. The green is not easy to putt on, either.
Hopefully you won't have a very long putt after your second (or third) shot,
because this is likely the second most difficult green to putt on. If
you can go an entire tournament without getting a Bogey on this hole,
consider yourself lucky.

HOLE 16

Difficulty: Hard

This is very similar to the previous hole, except O.B. is very tight on
both sides, and there is no big tree on the right. This is easier than
the previous hole because the drive doesn't have to be picture-perfect
to salvage Par. Putting won't be any easier, though.

HOLE 17
=======
Par 3 -- 187 yds

Pars    --62% ================================
Bogeys  --25% ============

Difficulty: Hard

Step up to the tee and on the left looms the world's largest water hazard: the
Pacific Ocean. Overall, this is an easy Par but an extremely tough Birdie. The
green is very large and flat in a few places, but the pin is never in a flat
spot on the green. It may not look like it, but the tee here is quite elevated,
and will give your shots 20 to 40 yards of extra carry, depending on the wind.
Adjust your club selection accordingly. Going O.B. here with too much club is
common. The extra height off your tee shot will make it easier to stop the ball
where you want it to, but it will get an exceptionally high bounce off the green
first. The green is very large, which makes Par easy but Birdie very tough.
Holes 14 through 17 are extremely tough, and it is very difficult to get
through this series of holes without making a Bogey. I have played around
200 recorded rounds on this game, and I have yet to Birdie all of these holes
in one round. I have managed to Birdie three of them in one round before.

HOLE 18
=======
Par 5 -- 551 yds
Eagles  -- 4% ==
Birdies --32% ================
Pars    --47% =======================
Bogeys  --15% =======
D.Bogeys-- 2% =
Others  -- 0%
Difficulty: Hard

This is a very long hole, and a sharp right-to-left dogleg. The only way to
reliably make this green in two is with a power shot. Don't try to cut the
corner on the dogleg but play very close to it. Without a power shot, take
a 3-wood as your second. You might run onto the green if you have a strong
wind at your back. It is very rare, though. This is still a good hole to
finish with a Birdie, so make it count.
