1.Introduction
Released on May 26th 2000 by Victor Interactive, this is the fishing RPG sequel
to Guardian Fishing 64. It is part of a series called River King in English.
There are 16 games in the series as of 2021, which began in 1990 with River
Guardian Fishing on the Famicom. Although the series is older than Harvest Moon
some games in the series were advertised as Harvest Fishing in PAL regions. The
two N64 games are technically part of a side series as they are not titled in
the same way as the main entries.
There are seven types of fishing in this game, and you can also catch insects,
and pick flowers which can then be used to make flower beds, which also play
music. There is also a checkers style mini-game to enjoy. According to the back
of the box there are 117 types of fish in the game. There are many varied
locations including a recreation of Hawaii.
This game is compatible with the Game Boy Color game Legend of the River King 2
which was released in all regions in 1999/2001. That game is actually numbered
as number 4 in Japan, and was itself compatible with Harvest Moon GBC 2 via the
link cable. The player was able to trade flowers and fish between the two game
boy games.
The ぬし Nushi of the title could be translated many ways. Note that hiragana was
used instead of Kanji which leaves its meaning open to interpretation. The
obvious translation would be master 主, as in master of a house. Pet owners are
also called 飼う主kau nushi in Japanese. However 主 Nushi is also used to refer to
“guardian spirits”, beasts that live in a certain place for a long time and have
mystical powers. I believe this what the English title, “The River King” was
attempting to convey. In Shinto mythology place such as mountains and rivers can
become boundaries where gods make contact with our world. This explains the
confusing ending to the film Spirit Away, wherein it is revealed that one
character is actually the incarnation of the Kohaku River.
ACSII Corporation released a tie in controller with the game, the Tsurikon
64(literally a combination for the words for fishing and controller). This
controller is compatible with all of the Japanese fishing games on the N64 as
far as I know. These days, these controllers are somewhat rare. Mine cost over
3,000 yen unboxed with no instructions. Boxed controllers cost a lot more. Many
of these controllers have been ruined because of battery acid leaks. Fishing
controllers are still released in Japan, by many different companies for many
different game systems.
I would like to thank Ozidual. Without his hard work, this guide would not have
been possible. He has been tirelessly scanning and uploading Japanese N64 game
manuals at extremely high quality. He is also assisting in many N64 translation
projects and fixed the trophy glitch in Space Station Silicon Valley. I am very
grateful for your efforts towards preserving video game history.

Fishing locations guide
Here I will list all the flowers, insects and fish that can be found in each
area. I recommend using the maps that I have also uploaded to gamefaqs to find
your way around each area. According to those maps the same fish can spawn at
multiple fixed places on the map. Perhaps the game does not have a behaviour
system for the fish, and relies more on a pokemon style random encounter system
at predetermined places? Sadly translating all the names of these obscure,
Japanese, fish, flowers and insects is a mammoth task. Instead I have left them
in Japanese as they will be displayed in the game. After translating the whole
manual, my motivation fell off quite sharply. Someday I will come back and
translate them all.
