Released on the 19th of March 1999, this is a video game version of board game
“The game of Life” by Takara. The game of life is a very popular game
in Japan, even to this day. It differs from the western version in the respect
that players must first pass through elementary, junior high and high school
before starting the game. These are extremely important stages of life for the
Japanese as can be seen by the amount of times they feature as settings in manga
and anime. This version of the game has an angels and demons theme, and includes
several mini games.

The Game of Life 64 is a board game in which, you spin a roulette and move your
character, when you land on a space you will enjoy various events. There are
many events such as mini-games, falling in love, and shopping. Whilst experience
good and bad events, the game ends when all players finally reach the goal.
After the game ends, player with the most assets is the winner.
Its more fun if every player has a controller and rumble pak!

How to start the game

When you start a new game you will be given the following 3 options
わいわいモード Exciting mode (1-4 players)
This is the normal mode of The Game of Life. Enjoy battling with your rivals
over assets. You can play with up to 4 friends or computer controlled players.
ぺあモード Pair mode (4 players)
In this mode you aim to get married as a pair. This is a game for 4 players. You
will fight together as 2 pairs. You can also include computer controlled
players. Decide the pairs before you play. Then, in order to get married, you
must raise your Affection Level to 100%. In order to do that, land on Heart
Spaces, and do special mini-games. In this mode, the normal mode Love events
will not occur. Pairs share their cards and assets. If you do not get married
your results will not be uploaded to the rankings. It has the same basic rules
as the normal mode.
(The manual suggests the teams should be boy/girl and boy/girl, but this is 2020
so be yourself!)
たっぐモード Tag mode (4 players)
This is a 2 vs 2 mode for 4 players. You can also include computer controlled
players. From the start you can share your cards and assets. At the goal, the
team with the most assets is the winner. It has the same basic rules as the
normal mode.
Next choose a map from the following 4

If you wish to change the turn order choose はい to shuffle the order.
The settings will then be confirmed. If you choose はい the game will start. If
you choose いいえ you can change the settings.
You can also decide your own procedures if you select じぶんでつくる.

Enter your name. You can enter up to 6 characters, in hiragana, katakana and
other characters. Select 決定 when you are finished

Enter your birthday, gender and blood type.
Birth dates are entered in the year/month/day format. Genders are 男性 male and 女性
female. Once they have been entered you star sign will automatically be decided.
Select 決定 when you are finished.

Make your characters face.
The options on offer are as follows, going clockwise from the 12 o’clock

If you choose おまかせ it will automatically make a face for you. Select 決定 when you

Save your created character by choosing はい.
The game screen
The command window is to the left hand side. The currently playing character is
in the bottom right. The Stats display is in the bottom left. The characters
information is shown in a big box at the bottom of the screen.
The Stats display shows the following information
知 Intelligence

The Character information displays the following on the left side of the box
Your name
Your profession
Your club activity (very important in Japan)
How much money you have
The right side of the box displays the following
Your current position in the game based on your assets and money.
Your star sign
Your blood type
When you move your character is displayed in their car, other characters are
displayed as stick figures. The number of spaces you will move is written in a
dialogue box at the top of the screen. The map will sometimes diverge, at these
points the screen will change and display arrows and will display the
information of the spaces you will stop at to the left.
Game commands
There are the following commands in the command window.
ルーレット Roulette
Spin the roulette to decide how far you will move. Press the A Button to display
the roulette and spin the 3D Sick to turn it. It will automatically stop. The
number of spaces you will move is displayed to the right. If you press the B
Button before spinning the roulette you can go back to the command window.
ステータス Status
This shows all 7 of your stats.
マップ Map
You can see how far from your current position you are from the goal and from
the player in first place.
カード Cards
You can use any cards you have and check their effects with this command. If you
use a card you will still be able to continue your turn and spin the roulette.
On the other hand, if you spin the roulette first you will not be able to use
any cards.
セーブ Save
You will be asked if you want to save your game, choose はい to do so.

You can change the following things on and off with this command

The last option アドバイスを見る will show you the Angels advice at any time.
About the 3 rule settings
おたすけ移動 Movement helper
If you are the only player is really far behind, this option will move to the
closest player. It is useful if you don’t have much play time. Depending on the
situation, you might not move much.
職業バトル Job battles
If two players who have both graduated university land on the same square an
event will occur. Both players will spin the roulette and the level of their job
will be added to the result, the player with the biggest number wins. If you win
your stats will increase, and they will decrease if you lose. It is useful to
choose a job which will level up your character easily. If you both land on a
salary space, battles will not occur.
モラルザエッグ A Moral Egg (They mistakenly wrote Moral The Egg in Japanese)
If you land on a Joy space, this event may occur. An angel may come and gift you
a Moral Egg. If you keep that egg, when you land on a Betting space, it can be
exchanged for a large amount of money. It is a very beneficial item. However
there are some events which can occur where your Moral Stats will be reduced,
they will also damage the Moral Egg. After a fixed amount of damage the Moral
Egg will break, and this will then lower your Moral Stats again. So it is very
important to be careful that your Moral stats are not lowered. There is only
one Moral Egg per game. If you stop at the same place as another player you will
be obliged to hand over the Moral Egg to them. However on the 老人マップ Elders Map,
this does not apply.
Map characteristics
In The Game of Life 64, all the maps have different components and layouts of
spaces. That is to say, it is a good idea to remember the composition of the
spaces. For this reason, beginners, and veterans to the game can enjoy these
fresh new maps.
全体マップ The Complete Map
The Basic Map 基本マップcontains the student, work and elderly maps.
The Complete Map contains the Basic Map AND the 6 特殊マップ6 Special Maps. The
Special Maps appear in the Main Map section during the Working life section. The
other maps are broken down as follows

じっくりマップ Careful Map (Literally “go through it without rushing map”

The more maps there are, the longer the game will be. The special maps will be
added in randomly with the except of the魔界マップ Hell Map.

Spaces on the board
There are 14 types of spaces, depending on the space different events will occur
when you land on them. Depending on the map, there are different amounts of each
space. There are also some spaces not included here.
Joy space – A yellow smiling star
The chances of a good event happening are high. You make get a stat boost or
money.
Sadness space – A blue sad tear drop
The chances of a bad event happening are high. You make get a stat reduction or
loose money.
Heart space – A pink heart
A romantic event will occur. After you are married an event with your partner or
pet will occur. In the Pair Mode you can play 4 types of Love Game on this
square.
Shop space – Has SHOP written on it
You can choose to buy something from either the card shop カードショップ the lottery
shop 宝くじショップ or the pet shop ペットショップ.
Revenge space – Has 仕返し written on it with a lightning bolt
You can take other players money or stats. If you choose to return them 戻す ,
depending on the situation they might not be fully returned.
Time Tunnel space – A yellow crisp? (potato chip?)
All players will be forced to come along with you to a different time period.
Chance space – A yellow thumps up
You will be given a new job or a card. Before you have graduated school you will
only get a card.
Century space – A grey screaming face
The dreadful “end of the century slot” will be spun. A bad event will befall all
players.
Salary space – Money with a yellow ￥ on it
If you only pass over this square you will just get your salary. The amount is
decided by the roulette. If you stop exactly on this square, you will be given
double the amount. Your job level may also level up.
Property space – A green house
An estate agent will appear, so you can sell or buy property. If you buy a
property it will become one of your assets.
Casino space – A yellow slot machine with カジノ written on it
A single player casino, where you can win money. There is only one casino map.
Game space – Has GAME written on it
A mini-game for all players will begin. Depending on the result of the game,
players stats may increase or decrease.
Capture space – A grey person falling into a hole
What..! You will be imprisoned by the police for 3 turns and sent to the jail
map.
Bet space – Has a blue 賭 written on it
These spaces are directly in front of the goal, and you will be forced to stop
there. The value of your cards and items will be calculated, after which you can
bet that money.

listed the stat levels that you will gain each time you gain a job level. They
are listed, from left to right, Intelligence, Stamina, Sense, Morals, and the
amount of money you may get when you spin the roulette for your salary.)

Mini-games
If you stop on the Game space a mini-game will start. All players will join in,
and their stats will change depending on if they win or lose. As the main game
continues the size of the stat changes will get bigger and bigger. The 8 games
some are require reflexes and techniques and some do not. The games are choosen
randomly, but you can choose between a 技型 technique game or a 運型 luck game. In
the Extras mode on the main menu you can play any mini game you like. If
everyone is playing on the same controller it will be necessary to take turns
playing the mini games, so there may be less choice of games.
技型 Technique games
ぞきんでGO! Go by Dust Cloth!
(A parody of the arcade train game series, Go by Train!)
The characters are cleaning the floorboards in the corridor by running along and
pushing a cloth. The moment you pass the white line press the A Button with good
timing to start braking. Avoid running into the wall or stopping too early to
win. If you hit the hall, depending on how you hit it, your stats will be
reduced.
ぼくらほりエモン We are the diggers
Choose a place you like inside the fenced area and repeatedly tap the A Button
to dig a hole. The person who collects the most items from the holes will get to
keep the items. Until you have finished digging one hole you cannot start
digging another. You can continue digging at the same place but, it is likely
that a bomb will appear. If you get blown up you will lose all the items you
have collected so far. Tsuukee aliens may come from the sky and get in your way.
(They look like flying arses.)
ホラーナイトフィーバー Horror Night Fever
Whilst pushing the A Button rotate the 3D stick, and the characters will spin
like spinning tops. Once you are spinning, let go of the A Button and use the 3D
stick to move freely. Hit the other players to try and send them flying. The
winner is the last player left on the stage. Your spin gauge is shown on screen,
if you spin too fast you will stop. If you do not have enough controllers for
each player, Tsuukee aliens will compete for you, the alien who falls off last
is the winner.
About shops
If you stop on the shop space you can buy only one item from one of the three
shops, but you sell as many times as you like.
カードショップThe Card Shop
You can buy a sell cards here. The cards on sale are chosen randomly, and there
are some cards you cannot buy at the shop. Such cards may be given to you on the
Chance space.
宝くじショップThe lottery shop
You can play the lottery here by choosing three lucky numbers. Each time you
land on the shop you can buy 1 ticket. You can hold up to 3 tickets at a time.
The lottery will be held whenever necessary. You will win if you met various
conditions.
ペットショップ The pet shop
You can buy dogs 犬 cats 猫 crocodiles ワニ or hamsters ハムスター here. The type of pet
on sale are random. If you buy a pet, get married, and then land on a Heart
space, a pet event will occur. You can keep up to 2 pets, and give them names.
When you reach the goal your pet will be included in your winning calculations.
Cards
You can buy cards at the card shop, and get them from the Chance space. You can
demonstrate your power by using cards effectively, but just keeping them is
effective too, there are various types of cards. Here are the main points of
some of the cards in the game.

About falling love and marriage
During the game the player can get married to a character of the opposite sex.
When you land on the Love space it is necessary to raise your affection level.
If you do not meet a partner during the game, you cannot get married. You can
arrive at the goal on your own but if you get married, you may receive a dowry
be able to use their salary, so we recommend that you get married. Search for a
person you are interested in and tie the knot!
Heart Space Events
Before the Wedding
出会いを求める Request a meeting
Go to various places, and meet people of the opposite sex. Before meeting them,
on the Affection Information screen (愛情一覧) their Affection Level will be shown
as a question mark. When you meet them for the first time you will learn their
name, face and level of affection. The success of a meeting depends on you Sense
stat.
デート Date
You can choose various places to go on a date at. If the date goes well the
affection level will rise. Each person has a preferred place to go on dates.
プロポーズ Proposal
When the affection level is high enough you can propose. If they accept, the
marriage event will occur. You can raise their affection for you up to 99% but
your proposal is likely to be accepted at a lower level of affection too.
自分を磨く Clean yourself up
If you can’t meet the type of person you like, do not keep requesting dates,
instead choose this option to level up your Sense stat.
結婚
When the marriage event occurs, you will get celebration money (a Japanese
custom) and a dowry. Also on the salary days, your partners salary will be added
to yours. Depending on the character you marry their salary and dowry will be
different. Characters with a large dowry usually have a high job level or moral
stat.
Lovers Profiles
Below are the profiles of six characters. ther characters faces and names are
decided randomly each time. On the Affection Information screen (愛情一覧) you can
see their faces, names and how much affection they have for you.
Love Games in Pair Mode
When you land on a Heart space in pair mode, you can enjoy cooperating with your
partner in a Love Game. There are 4 types of game which are randomly choosen. If
you are successful, your affection for each other will increase a lot. If you
fail your affection will also increase but only a little. If you get your
affection level to 99% the next time you land on a Heart space the marriage
event will occur.
About properties
If you stop on the property space, you can buy property from the estate agent.
The properties are chosen randomly, please buy one that you like. The property
is one of your assets and will be added into the calculations when you land on a
Bet space. Even if you have no money you can see purchase a property. There are
two types of properties, residences and properties to get income from.
Residences include高級住宅 High class residences and リッチなおやしき Rich Mansions. Income
properties include ジョニマート Johnny Mart and ホテルあきもと Hotel Akimoto. One player can
own up to 4 properties including only 1 residence type property.
About gaining income from your properties
If you buy a property that earns you income, when you land on your salary space,
the income will be decided. If you own a Real Estate Business 不動産, you can
decide what day to get your income.
About Events
When you land on the Joy or Sadness spaces, various events will occur. If you
are on the Student Map, a relevant event will occur. Events usually change your
stats. There are also times when you can make choices during an event, or the
event will send you to a special separate event map. There are also obligatory
events.
