Released on March 26th 1998, this is the 5th game in the Powerful Pro Baseball
series which began on the Super Famicom in 1994. The game requires 74 pages to
Success Mode players and Arrange mode teams, but saves other data to the game
cart. It sold around 160,000 copies, much less than the later PS1 game (480,000
copies).
Along with 9 other modes, this game includes a story mode, called Successful
Mode, which was a feature that was first included in the previous game on the
N64. This time the player is a student at one of three high schools, rather than
already a pro player. Also the number of girls that you can date has been
increased from 4 to 6. This game also led to a spin off series called Power Pro
Kun Pocket on the Game Boy Color.
It features commentary tracks from Noriyuki Abe and Kotono Mitsuishi, hence the
“Live” in the title. Amusingly, at the time of release, several pro baseball
players were involved in a tax evasion case. This led to their characters being
hidden in the game. Konami later released a password to reveal these characters
in an official strategy guide.
The manual for this game includes the results of the 1998 pennant competition;
you can use this to choose the best team for the main modes, which is probably
Yakult. Yes, Yakult is a Japanese drink, and yes they own a baseball team.
This manual and game is pretty much the same as the other games in the series,
so if you have played them or read my other translations you can skip most of
the manual. But I have translated it all again for posterity.
The British publication, N64 magazine, reviewed the game, giving it 78% which
was a much better score than they gave the 4th game (54%). They said that the
game is “strictly for fans of Japanese weirdness”. But as a British magazine,
they were usually more interested in football games.
As a Brit I know nothing about Baseball, so please forgive any errors in terms I
may make. It's even possible that some cricket terminology might accidentally
slip in instead, sorry gov'ner.
I would like to thank Ozidual. Without his hard work, this guide would not have
been possible. He has been tirelessly scanning and uploading Japanese N64 game
manuals at extremely high quality. He is also assisting in many N64 translation
projects and fixed the trophy glitch in Space Station Silicon Valley. I am very
grateful for your efforts towards preserving video game history.

events will end badly for you. If your motivation is low, then your abilities in
games will suffer, and you will get less stat boosts from training. If your
toughness is also low, you are more likely to suffer an injury.

About saving and quitting
When you want to quit the game choose システム and then セーブしておわる. If you press the
reset button during the game it is likely that your progress will be deleted, so
be careful. (I think this a system to prevent you from save scumming as it
actually deletes your whole file! So don’t press the reset button unless you
actually want to start over from the beginning!)
About types of training
There are 11 types of training, each of which have a different effect on the
development of your stats. Your training level is dependent on how much you
study, and will also be affected by events.
Miscellaneous skills
Can be trained easily by anyone. Eve though they don’t raise your skills, your
team mates and captains opinion of you will rise. Also they will not cause an
injury.
Trained with 雑用 / 球磨き / 球拾い (odd jobs, ball cleaning, picking up balls)
Basic Strength
Build up your basic strength so that you do not get injured when you train other
skills. They make you tired and reduce your technique stat but, increase your
Toughness a lot. Keep an eye on your motivation level when you do these
activities.
Trained with ランニング / タイや引き / 鉄ゲタ (running, tire pull, iron shoes)
Power
Increases your physical power a lot, and also increases your Toughness a little.
But it reduces your technique and swiftness stats. Be careful of injurieis.

The basic practice of fielders. Raises your physical strength and technique, but
does not reduce your condition or causes injuries much. Recommended.
Trained with 素振り / トスバッティング / マシン打撃 (practice swinging, toss batting, machine
batting
Defending
Increases your swiftness and technique a lot. But you are very likely to be
injuried or be worn out, so be careful. It is hard training so it increases
people opinion of you. But if people don’t cooperate with you…
Trained with ノック / 近距離ノック / 実戦守備 (knock , short distance knock, in game
defending)
Base Running
Increases your swiftness a lot. Like knock it is hard training, but you can do
it on your own.
Trained with スプリント / ミニハードル / パラシュートラン (sprinting, mini-hurdles, parachute run)
Refresh training

they are listed from 1 to 12, so 1月 is January and 12月 is December. School
years, and most other things in Japan start in April, or 4月, when the cherry
blossom blooms! The All Japan High School Baseball Koshien Tournament in August
is a national event every year. Anyone who likes baseball watches this
tournament to see which players will be picked to become pros. It’s a pretty
emotional event for many high school students.)

forced to retire from the club the game will be over. When you get a game over,
that characters data will automatically be deleted.
Advice
At the start of Success Mode, try to raise your team mates opinion of you. If
your team mates do not cooperate with you, then you wont be able to practice.
Even if you become the Captain, it is necessary that your team mates have a good
opinion of you. The most effective way to raise their opinion is through the
Miscellaneous skills options in the training menu,
A good way to recover your motivation and physical condition, is by Stretching
or Studying. However, you can also recover a lot by talking to people with the
Talk command. However, it is not certain that you will recover motivation or
physical condition with the Talk command, and bad events may even occur.
Build up your basic physical abilities. Your Toughness stat may reduce from time
to time, so recover it by Running or doing the Tyre Pull! If your toughness stat
is low, it is easy to get injured. As a pitcher, doing Ball Speed practice will
raise your toughness stat.
Be careful of the injury probability of training methods. In order to overcome
ones of 10% use one of the Refresh training methods or the Study command.
Take good care of your girl friend. If you don’t give her any attention for a
long time she will break up with you!
If your captain’s opinion of you is low, you will not be picked for the team.
Train or talk to them.
If you coaches opinion of you is low, he will not recommend you to the scout.
Train hard or talk to him.
Before you play in a game, recover your physical condition and motivation,
because they have an effect in the game.
Before you play in a Koshien game, if you register your characters name with the
announcer, they will call your name in the game.

3.Success Mode Walkthrough
You have a choice of three high schools. This effects the storyline and the
difficulty.
Powerful High School
Easy to clear, but your character won’t have good stats.
Red Dragonfly High School
A poor old wooden high school in the mountains. The baseball team has not won a
game in 6 years so the Vice Principal is trying to have the club disbanded.
Because of this the quality of equipment is low and there are few players. On
the other hand, there are many events that motivate the character. Because there
are so few team mates, the player can join games in the summer of the first
year. If you can’t win a game by the fall of 2nd grade the club will be
disbanded, and you will get a game over.
Swan Academy
A prestigious school, the training equipment is very good quality, so it is easy
to level up your character when you train. Because the club members are all of
high ability, it is easy to win games, but on the other hand it is hard for your
character to rise through the ranks and be picked for games. There are also many
events which reduce the characters motivation stat. Because your character is
enrolled on a sports scholarship, if you are injured for more than 6 weeks you
will be kicked out of school, resulting in a game over.
The protagonist of this game is based on the protagonist of Powerful Pros 3,
Tetsuo Toi. So if you set your name to Toi (戸井), you increases the chances of
getting good senses stats.
There are 6 possible girls you can date in Success Mode.
