INTRODUCTION
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Jewel Master is an old platformer for the Genesis. The Kingdom of
Mythgard has been attacked by the evil Jardine, and it's up to you to
stop him (original, huh?). What makes this game unique is the elemental
rings that you collect, which can be equipped for different spells.
This game really doesn't need a FAQ, but hey, I'm bored :)
LEVEL ONE-- THE GENERIC FOREST AND THE TEMPLE(S) OF DOOM
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

For the record, this Walkthrough is written for the Normal difficulty,
though it should apply to Easy and Hard as well.

You start with the Lv.1 Fire and Water rings. From the start, just
walk forward and kill anything that gets in your way: watch out for the
fish, they can catch you by surprise. After the water, you will be
attacked by a large golem. Just get close enough for him to punch you,
back away before he does, and use the pause to get a couple hits in.
Repeat until he explodes, and continue on. You'll soon enter a temple.
Climb the steps and walk to the right a little. An armored knight will
appear and attack you in the same fashion as the golem. As soon as you
see him, turn back and drop down the stairs about halfway. He'll be
standing right above you, so just flame him until he explodes. For this
easy kill, you'll get the Lv.1 Wind ring. I recommend using it with the
Water ring to get the Wave spell. Continue on, down the steps and out
of the temple. You will be attacked by several Goblins, Golems, and
Plants, but all can be destroyed easily with your new Wave spell. If a
Golem gets too close for comfort, jump over a rock and destroy him from
where he can't reach you. Keep this in mind when two come from both
directions: just kill the one in front and retreat to the rock that's
ahead. Keep moving forward, and you'll reach another temple, and your
first encounter with the Dragon Blasters. These cannons shoot balls of
energy, and they can aim in three directions: Diagonally up, straight
forward, and diagonally down. Keep in mind that you cannot duck a
straight shot, but you can jump over it. Their shots do heavy damage,
so be careful. Destroy this one before it fires and move forward.
You'll find another Dragon Blaster, and destroy it. Up the stairs
you'll find a new enemy: Rock Men. They're a slower version of the
goblins, so kill them and move on. At the top of the stairs is a Dragon
Blaster: just aim up and destroy it. Continue forward, killing Rock Men
and Dragon Blasters, until you reach more stairs. Once again, there is
a Dragon Blaster at the top. Destroy it, move on up, and meet the
Mudmen: they're slow, so blast away. You'll also find a red potion to
heal yourself with. Continue on this path, and a new obstacle with
appear: bomb-spitting faces. Only the actual bomb can hurt you: you can
walk through the explosion without any problem. Continue on, and down
the stairs, where you will find another Dragon Blaster. Just duck on
the 3rd step and fire with your Wave shot to destroy it. However, if it
fires a straight shot, JUMP, because it WILL hit you where you're
standing. Keep moving left, and another Mudman will appear, except this
one's pretty fast. Retreat to the steps and blast him when he moves
away. Continue on, past the Bomb Faces.... ooh, scary music. This
signifies a Boss is coming up. Blow up the thing (for lack of a better
term), to release a gnome, who will heal you AND give you another life
bar! This is a freebie: there is one of these creatures in every stage,
but you have to find the rest. Anyway, down the steps, past another
Dragon Blaster, and to the right, you'll find a tiger "statue", which
comes alive.

~~~~~
TIGER
~~~~~

EASY. Position yourself at the right end of the Tiger's pedestal, and
walk forward a little, to the middle of the pedestal, when it bounds
toward you. It'll jump right over you. Walk back to the right spot, and
it'll jump over you again. Keep repeating this procedure, plugging away
the entire time, and you'll never get hit. For your troubles, you get
the Lv.1 Earth ring.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
LEVEL 2-- IS IT HOT OUT HERE, OR IS IT JUST ME?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The first area of this level is fairly linear, so I'll just cover how
to deal with the enemies.

Flying Rat-- Annoying. Just hit it with a Flame attack when it flies
toward you.

Scorpion-- use any magic to take it out, preferably before while it's
in the ground and not jumping all over.

Cactus-- REAL challenging. They explode when you hit them, but if you
keep firing throughout the level, you might not even see one of these.

Sandworm-- these things do moderate damage if they touch you, so be
careful. When it appears, just stand under it and fire upwards with
your spell of choice. Defeating the first sand worm yields the Lv.2
Wind Ring.

Shortly after getting the Wind ring, you'll find a life potion. After
walking and killing for a while, you'll reach a door and the next area.

To the right, over the wall and under the flying birds, you'll find a
Bone Blaster. This is exactly the same as the Dragon Blasters from
Level 1, it just looks different, so treat it as such. Blow it up, and
work your way down to a room with another Bone Blaster. After
destroying it, you'll have to equip the High Jump magic to continue on.
I recommend having this magic equipped for the rest of the area, unless
you need the ring for an attack spell. Continue down, destroying the
two Bone Blasters along the way, and fall down the pit into a room with
a blue background (I think that's supposed to be water). Ignore the
room to the right, it's a dead end. Climb up the stair before said
room, and continue. Keep climbing and destroying (there's a Bone
Blaster directly above you at one point, blow it up with the Wave to
save yourself a little trouble) until you jump out of the hole in the
floor. Continue to the right, and through another hole. Farther to the
right, before another drop, you'll notice a hole in the ceiling with a
couple of Bone Blasters nearby. Keep this in mind, and try to destroy
the blasters if you want. At the lower ledge, just walk off and STOP.
You'll see a well on the left side of another pit. Touch it to release
a fairy that will heal you and give you another life bar. Now fall into
the pit to fight the Skeleton Boss.
This is laughable. Just fire like crazy as soon as you land, and you'll
destroy half it's body before it does anything. Once it starts moving,
equip the Speed Up magic so you can outrun it. You should be able to
defeat it without getting hurt.
If you did, however, no problem: continue on the path, up and to the
right (don't go up the stairs yet) and you'll reach a seemingly dead-
end. Jump towards the wall, and you'll find a secret passage. Continue
up and to the left in this passage, and walk into the darkness to find
a hidden life potion. Return to the normal path and continue up, and
jump out of the hole (you might want to destroy the Blasters from below
first). To the left, you'll find the hole you saw earlier: if you
missed the fairy, you can use this to backtrack. To the right is the
exit....

They're playing that boss music a little early this time. The rest of
the way is completely straightforward, so again, here are the enemies:

Flying Dragon (?): it swoops once, above you, then again, low enough to
hit you. Destroy it in the first swoop.

Fireball: these bounce along the ground at several heights. If it's a
high bounce, just walk under it. Low bounce, jump over it. Or just
destroy it if you can.

After a while of these two enemies, you'll reach a nest, and the
boss....

~~~~~~~
PHOENIX
~~~~~~~

A little harder than the tiger, but not by much. The Wave magic is
recommended. When it first appears, get a few shots in before it moves.
Then, when it starts flying, move all the way to the left, and aim up
to hit it while it's flying. After a couple runs, it will swoop down
(if you're all the way to the left, it usually won't hit you, but duck
if necessary), and will move to the right corner of the screen. Jump up
and shoot at it, the fireballs it throws can't reach you in the left
corner. Repeat this pattern, and you should defeat it without any
problems. You gain the Lv.3 fire ring for defeating this boss.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
LEVEL 3-- HELLO! ICE TO MEET YOU!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

You start off in a forest. After a few steps, it petrifies. Again, this
area is completely linear, so here's the enemy list:

Blue Statue: it'll hover for a minute, then swoop down and fire a shot
at you. Just jump over it and blast the statue. Simple.

Ice Man: if you notice it quickly enough, you can destroy it before it
rams you.

Mutant Hedgehogs: annoying. If you have a turbo controller (or mash the
button if you don't), use your Lv.3 Flame as a shield.

Eventually you'll see a wrecked ship in the background. At this point,
I recommend equipping the Speed Up spell.

Yeti: this thing does heavy damage, so DO NOT let it touch you! You'll
be able to outrun it with the Speed Up magic, so run from it, taking
pot shots with the Fire Ball every few steps. Eventually you'll defeat
it, and get the Lv.2 Earth ring for your trouble. Continue on, into the
cave....

When you first enter, there are 3 paths: the lowest, middle, and
highest. In the middle path, there is a strange looking jellyfish.
Destroy it to gain the Lv.2 Water ring. After that you can take any
path you choose, though the highest has a life potion for you to grab.
Once you are at the top (you'll need the High Jump magic for some of
this area), head to the right. In the upper right corner is a shining
pillar. Destroy it to release a flame, which will heal/increase life
bar. Drop down a level, and head right. Destroy the jellyfish and the
annoying insects along the way. When you reach the ice bridge, climb it
and jump up to reach the boss....

~~~~~~~~~~~~
GIANT TURTLE
~~~~~~~~~~~~

finally, a semi-hard boss! I recommend using the Fire Ball magic. It's
easier to hit with, and this is an ICE CAVERN.... it has three main
attacks you need to avoid. When it stomps it's foot, icicles will drop
from the ceiling. You can just dodge them, or duck under the small
platform to avoid them. It can shoot ice from it's mouth, but if you're
using the 3-way fire ball, you'll never be high enough to get hit by
it. It can also form icicles on it's back: when it is large enough, the
giant icicle will fly and land near where you're standing. This is it's
most dangerous attack, so be careful and keep moving. It gets less
accurate the farther away you get from the turtle, so duck into the
notch in the floor where you came from to avoid it. You CANNOT duck
under the platform to avoid this. After a while of blasting it's head,
it'll explode, giving you the Lv.3 Water ring in the process. On to the
next level!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
LEVEL 4-- OH GIVE ME A HOME, WHERE THE BUFFALO ROAM....
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The walkthrough is done until next update. Here's some tips though:
From the start, head right. This level is full of armored knights, but
you can take care of them easily now. There are two paths: the lower
one has you fighting a couple armored knights and a few Stone Faces.
These throw boulders at you, and they're usually out of your reach.
However, the Wave spell can reach them if you want to destroy them. The
upper path has you dealing with these AND the annoying Dragons from
level two. After that, you'll find a small body of water. Just walk
straight through the water, not the ground paths, and keep firing to
take out the fish and other enemies easily. After this, you'll find a
life potion, a waterfall, and another boss....
The Flying Demon has a simple pattern. It will fly left and right, then
land around the center of the screen. Then it will attack in one of two
ways: it will either charge up and release a VERY fast shot, or it will
shoot off three small shots at you. Both are easy to avoid, and this
boss does very little damage, so don't worry about getting hit. Keep
blasting him, and it'll be over soon enough. It will drop the Lv.3 Wind
Ring when it's gone.
In the next area, destroy the two rock-throwing goblins you see to
reveal two life potions. After that, take the lower path. All the
enemies are on the lower path, but they are easily destroyed with the
3-way Fire-Ball or the Large Wave. Continue on, and you'll find a lava
pit. Equip the Double-Jump magic, and jump over it. You'll need this
magic for the rest of the area.
Here, you will find several lava pits and platforms. Take whatever
route you choose, but there is a life potion on a platform near the end
of the area. Shortly after that, you'll reach the Giant Dragon....

~~~~~~~~~~~~
GIANT DRAGON
~~~~~~~~~~~~

Another challenging boss.... it has a couple attack patterns. As soon
as you see it open it's mouth, JUMP. The fireball it shoots will miss
you. If it raises it's head and looks upwards, it's about to release 4
fireballs. Do a double-jump, and you might be able to avoid getting
hit. It also moves to where you're standing, but that's easily avoided.
After a while, it will explode and give you the Lv.3 Green ring. But
don't get cocky yet, it isn't over! Oh, wait, nevermind, go ahead and
get cocky. Use your new Blade magic, and fire away! You'll destroy the
bone dragon before it can do anything!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
LEVEL 5-- WE'RE ON A ROAD TO NOWHERE...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Here it is, the final level. Move right, and the crows above you will
attack. Just hit them with your Blade magic and move on. Shortly after,
a flame-throwing box will appear. Just duck under it, and move on.
Next, you'll find a Mace Knight. You'll see a few more of these, but
they fall with one blow of the Blade, so destroy it and move on.
Continue up the stairs, and the Dragon Blasters make a reappearance.
However, they fall as easily as the Mace Knights. Continue to the left,
duck under another Flame Box, move up a little, and ANOTHER Flame Box
will appear. Even though it doesn't look like it, you CAN duck under
it, as long as the flame doesn't hit you. Continue moving upward,
destroying enemies along the way, until the path splits. The upper left
path has a life potion: the upper right is a dead-end. Equip your
double jump and high jump magic, and use it to jump across the pit in
the lower-right path. Continue to the right, destroying crows along the
way, until you reach the end. A green... thing... will appear, and will
attempt to punch you. Just destroy it before it gets the chance. Head
along the path, and fall down into the pit, where you'll a bunch of
annoying insects. Destroy them before they can do any real damage, and
move on to the left. Three Flame Boxes will appear along the way,
you'll have to backtrack to avoid the first two, but the third can be
double jumped. When you see a hole in the ceiling, use your jump magic
to climb it. The left path is a dead-end. Now this is tricky. You must
jump across the platforms, and spears will pop out when you land on
them. If you delay your jump for more than a second, you'll get hit.
Re-equip the Blade near the last jump, and destroy the Dragon Shooter
so you can land safely. Head to the right, and destroy the yellow
machine to create a bridge. Cross the bridge, and into the next
area.... right, drop down to the bottom. Watch out for all the fish
that pop up, and walk to the left to find a life potion. Moving to the
right, you'll notice two yellow pads on the floor. Those are the same
spear platforms from earlier, so jump over them, and you won't get hit.
Continue up and to the left, until you see a strange-looking wall. Use
your Blade to destroy it, then get on the stone elevator. Once at the
top, go to the left, and you'll see a life potion against the wall.
Double Jump over to it, as the floor in front of it is an invisible
pit. Now work your way to the right, past another Dragon Shooter, until
you reach an area with Dragon Shooters and pits. If you fall to the
left, you'll face the Giant Dragon again, and have to backtrack.
Keeping moving down and to the right, until the path splits again. The
lower path is full of water and is a dead-end. The upper path has
another fake wall, destroy it and continue on. You'll see a pit of
water below a large platform, this pit leads to that watery dead-end.
Use your Jump magic to work your way to the upper-left, where you'll
find ANOTHER fake wall/ceiling. Climb up to face the Phoenix again.
After destroying it, continue on into the final area.... in this area,
walk forward until you find a statue. This is a Fire Elemental boss.
Just keep firing with the blade, your shots will stop it's fire-balls.
After about 5 hits, it'll explode. Walk on to face a Water Elemental.
This will shoot 3-way Ice Daggers, which is a little harder to dodge,
but if you fire quick enough, you won't take too much damage. Continue
on, up the platforms and to the left, to find the next mini-boss, the
Earth Elemental. This is a little harder, as it swings a mace and
causes earthquakes to stun you, but it will fall like the others. Next
is the Wind Elemental. It fires large wave shots, so just keep making
small jumps to avoid getting hit. After you destroy the last of the
elementals, climb up the steps and move to the right to face the final
boss....

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
JARDINE THE MAD
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This is HARD. I haven't actually beaten him myself yet, but here's a
strategy anyway. Start firing right to get a few hits in, before he
flashes grey and changes into a skull. You can't hurt him when he's
transformed, so equip the Speed Up and Double Jump magics. He'll fly
around quickly, trying to hit you, then he'll roll a black ball across
the floor, and repeat the flying pattern. Try not to get hit by either,
they do heavy damage. Then he'll change back to human, flash, and shoot
an image of across the screen. Double-jump to avoid this. then the
skull pattern is repeated. Good luck....

~~~~~~~~~~
SPELL LIST
~~~~~~~~~~

Flame
Combination: single Fire Ring on either hand
This is a useful spell. It generates a flame from your character's
hand. Early on, it's all you have, but it's great for defeating flying
or small enemies, and larger ones if you get close enough. You can mash
the button or use turbo to put out a nonstop flame.

Lv.1 ring-- short-range flame
Lv.2 ring-- Medium-range flame
Lv.3 ring-- Fire Wave

Fire Wall
Combination: Lv.1 or 2 Fire Ring + Lv.1-3 Earth Ring
This one isn't so good. It creates a column of fire from the ground in
front of your character. The range on this is short enough, but it can
only be used on the ground. The range gets better with stronger Earth
rings, but still, use the Flame instead.

Lv.1 ring-- two-column burst
Lv.2 ring-- three-column burst
Lv.3 ring-- four-column burst

Fire Viper
Combination: Lv.3 Fire Ring + Lv.1-3 Earth Ring
Here's an interesting spell. It creates a fire snake that moves along
the ground, and flies diagonally down if used in the air. it goes right
through enemies, and does some nice damage. A fun spell to play around
with.

Lv.1 ring-- slow viper
Lv.2 ring-- medium speed viper
Lv.3 ring-- fast Viper

Fire Ball
Combination: Lv.1-3 Fire Ring + Lv.1-3 Earth Ring
Now HERE'S a good spell. This shoots a number of fire balls (depends on
the ring) from your character's hand. It doesn't really become useful
until Level 3, but after you get the 3-way Fire Ball, it becomes very
reliable. Overall, a good spell to use. Speed and power vary depending
on the rings used.

Lv.1 Fire Ring-- single fire ball    Lv.1 Wind Ring-- slow speed (one
on-screen at a time)
Lv.2 Fire Ring-- double fire ball    Lv.2 Wind Ring-- medium speed
(faster shot)
Lv.3 Fire Ring-- 3 Way Fire Ball     Lv.3 Wind Ring-- fast speed
(multiple shots on screen)

Barrier
Combination: Single Water Ring on either hand
The only defensive spell. This spell creates a wall of water that
protects you. I think it reduces damage, but I never noticed. You're
better off using something else.

Lv.1 ring-- 2-second barrier
Lv.2 ring-- 5-second barrier
Lv.3 ring-- 8-second barrier
I don't have a stopwatch, so those are only guesses.

Wave
Combination: Lv.1-3 Water Ring + Lv.1-3 Wind Ring
THIS is the best spell you have until you get the blade. It shoots a
wave from your character's hand that moves up and down as it goes. Not
only can this hit a target above or below you, it can also go through
walls! Speed and power vary depending on the rings used.

Lv.1 Water Ring-- Single Wave      Lv.1 Wind Ring-- slow speed (one on-
screen at a time)
Lv.2 Water Ring-- Helix Shot       Lv.2 Wind Ring-- medium speed
(faster shot)
Lv.3 Water Ring-- Large Wave       Lv.3 Wind Ring-- fast speed
(multiple shots)

Ice Dagger
Combination: Lv.1-3 Water Ring + Lv.1-3 Earth Ring
Another interesting spell. it creates an ice wave from you character's
hand that ricochets off walls. Great in enclosed areas. Another fun-to-
use spell.

Lv.1 Water Ring-- Single Dagger       Lv.1 Earth Ring-- slow speed (one
on-screen at a time)       Lv.2 Water Ring-- Diagonal Daggers    Lv.2
Earth Ring-- medium speed (faster shot)
Lv.3 Water Ring-- 3-way Dagger        Lv.3 Earth Ring-- fast speed
(multiple shots)

Earthquake
Combination: single Earth Ring on either hand
This spell is useless. It creates an earthquake that shakes the screen.
I've never seen this affect enemies or other things. Pass this one
up....

Lv.1 Small Quake
Lv.2 Medium Quake
Lv.3 Large Quake

Speed Up
Combination: single Lv.1 Wind Ring on either hand
A useful non-attack spell. it speeds up your character and makes them
move faster. This is useful for certain jumps and outrunning enemies.

High-Jump
Combination: single Lv.2 Wind Ring on either hand
Another useful spell. this spell makes your character jump higher. This
is required in some areas, but it's still useful in areas like the
cave.

Double Jump
Combination: single Lv.3 Wind Ring on either hand
This is a great spell! It allows you to perform another jump in the
middle of your first jump. VERY useful.

Blade
Combination: Lv.3 Fire + Lv.3 Water on the left hand, Lv.3 Wind + Lv.3
Earth on the right hand.
This is the ultimate spell. when you swing the blade, four elemental
orbs appear, which quickly form a white fire-ball that flies across the
screen. Once you get this, anything but the final boss will be killed
instantly.

Null
Fire and Water cancel each other out, as do Wind and Earth. When a
lower-level ring is placed on the same hand as a higher-level ring, if
they are the same type or would normally cancel each other out, you
will get the spell of the higher-level ring.

Hints and Tips:
DON'T STOP FIRING. You never know when an enemy will pop up, and this
