INTRODUCTION
First and foremost, I want to state that this guide owes an immense debt of
gratitude to Gamefaqs member "DragonAtma" for all of the information he has
made available over the years regarding the inner workings of this fine game.
The amalgamation of information presented below would not have been possible
without his work.
To wit, yes, lists are out there for just about any statistic you can think
of regarding the Generals present in this game. However, one must dig deep
and know where to look and understand the game well enough to be able to put
it all together. As such, the aim of this guide is to provide a simple
master list that RoTK2 gamers at any level can reference while playing to
quickly and easily determine the whereabouts (or lack thereof) of any and
all searchable Free Generals in their controlled territories.
INSTRUCTIONS
Here's how it works: the list below contains every searchable Free General in
each of the six scenarios, ordered numerically by province. The number before
the General's name corresponds to the province said General will initially
appear in. The number after the General's name is the year that he will show
up in that province. This means that in the month of January of the year
listed, that General will be searchable within that province. Note that I
have listed the year in which each Scenario begins at the top of each
Scenario's listing. This is very important because it signifies the relevancy
of a particular General's listing. For example, in Scenario 1 Gongsun Yuan
is scheduled to appear in Province 1 in the year 220. Well that's all fine
and dandy, but if you happen to notice that Scenario 1 begins in 189, you'll
realize that your game would have to last over THIRTY YEARS before this guy
would show up! And anyone who has beaten this game before will know that
things will have been decided, one way or another, long before that year
would ever come to pass in the first Scenario.
Also note that many of the years listed for the Generals are EARLIER than the
starting year of the Scenario they are listed in. In such cases, this means
that the General is available immediately. For example, let's say you start
a game in Scenario 2 and find yourself in control of Province 7 at the outset.
You'll notice that in the list below, two Generals, Zhang Nan and Jiang Yiqu,
are listed in your province, both with the year 189. Since it's already
194, this means that both Generals are searchable right off the bat. It is
very simple to quickly look down the list of the Scenario you are playing and
know immediately if it is worth your while to do a search (or to attack a
province that will have a really good recruitable General showing up in a
year or two like Zhuge Liang in Province 16 in the year 196 of Scenario 1,
but I digress). There are, however, many factors to keep in mind...
CAVEATS
Movement: Generals move. This game is very fluid and not much is static from
one month to the next, especially in the early going. Generals are constantly
moving around. If you think you're going to take over an occupied province
two years after someone was scheduled to show up there and expect him to still
be hanging around just waiting for you to search him out, you've got another
thing coming. You can assume with absolute certainty that the General in
question has already been found, recruited, and is now living quite happily
with the rest of his Ruler's men. Computer-controlled Rulers in this game are
very adept at finding and recruiting Free Generals that show up in their
territories quickly and efficiently, so the usefulness of this list in that
regard is in knowing who is going to show up where so that you can try to
recruit the new General away from whatever Ruler initially hires him. In sum,
a hidden General will only sit still and remain available in his original
location if his province has been entirely unoccupied from the time he became
searchable until the moment you arrived.
Charm: Generals with low charm ratings have a much tougher time finding hidden
Free Generals. If the list says someone is supposed to be showing up in your
province but you're just not having any luck finding him, try searching with
your most charming Generals to give yourself better odds. Alignment between
the Three Kingdoms can also be an issue, but if the General you're searching
with has a high enough charm rating, the alignment of the Generals in question
shouldn't much matter.
Hard Cap: RoTK2 allows a finite number of active Generals to be present in a
running game at any one time. Once that cap has been hit, no new Generals
will appear until some of the current ones die off (one in, one out, so to
speak). And releasing a General from your service isn't enough to change
this number, as all that does is turn the released General back into a Free
General who will then randomly wander around the map until another Ruler picks
him up. So if it seems like no new Free Generals are appearing at all, try
killing off some of your more useless Generals in battle, and make sure to
behead any of the lesser Generals you've captured in battles won, and see if
that helps. Just be aware that there is a hidden queue, so Free Generals will
pop up in the order they would have appeared, so there may be a backlog to
slog through before the fellow you're keen to acquire shows up.
Familial Relations: Quite a few Generals on this list will automatically join
a Ruler who is his father or another family member, if the required parent or
relative is alive when he would be set to show up, thus skipping the Free
General designation entirely. For example, Ma Chao, a great War General, is
set to show up as a hidden General in 191 of Scenario 1 in Province 14 if his
father, Ma Teng, should happen to predecease his arrival. Unfortunately,
though, this is only two years into the game, so the odds of his father being
wiped out this early are extremely low, rendering Ma Chao a very unlikely Free
General to find through the course of normal play. As such, I've included a
complete list of auto-joining Generals below the main list. If you're having
no luck at all finding a particular General in one of your provinces, be sure
to cross reference that bottom list to see if he hasn't already been added to
another Ruler's roster automatically.
Alright, that was a lot of preamble; on to the meat of the guide - the list.
Be aware that Scenario 5 is listed in column 3 below Scenario 3 and Scenario 6
is listed in column 4 beneath Scenario 4. Also be aware that this guide does
not list every General in the game; it only lists Generals who appear as Free
Generals, along with when and where they appear. Cao Cao, for example, is
nowhere to be found on the list below because in each of the six Scenarios
he's either a Ruler or already deceased. Got it? Good.

Two final notes on the above list; first, a small handful of Generals have a
number in brackets after their name. Well it turns out that a couple of
Generals in the game have duplicate names, so the number in brackets is used
to differentiate between them. And second, you may have noticed that the list
only goes up to Province 36 in all six Scenarios, in spite of the fact that
there are 41 available provinces on the map. This is not a mistake; it just
so happens that there are no naturally occuring Free Generals in Province's
37 to 41 in any of the six Scenarios. That is not to say that they cannot
appear there, as they can still end up wandering in there from bordering
states, be released by Rulers into the wild, be sent in as spies, etc., but
none will occur there naturally without some sort of in-game randomness or
the intervention of a Ruler.
And Lastly, here is the list of Generals who will automatically join with a
parent or relative if one is available. The number after each auto-joining
General is the year in which he will join, assuming his parent or relative is
still alive. The Generals in the list below will ONLY show up as hidden Free
Generals as per the list above if their parent or relative is predeceased at
the time of their scheduled appearance.
