==================================

In case you have any questions, I can be contacted personally at one of the e-
mail addresses that I provided in the copyright information section above. One
thing to note is that there are restrictions on contacting me, listed here:

- If I am contacted for personal issues, even if it is just a message saying a
greeting, the e-mail will be ignored and/or deleted. Not to be a jerk, but I'm
only responding to e-mails pertaining to my guide.
- If you contact me with questions that are easily answered within this guide,
I will likely not respond to them. If there is anything that isn't spelled out
clearly in my guide, feel free to notify me and I will find and edit the area,
but if I find that the so-called unclear section is actually easily explained,
I will not reply.
- Hate mail will, of course, not be addressed. It will be deleted immediately,
with no exceptions whatsoever. Don't waste my time and your own telling me any
unsavory things about my mother.
- If you see any mistakes in my guide, please notify me as soon as possible so
I can rectify them. This guide is here to help people, not to further bewilder
them. If you do find a mistake and inform me, your name will be added below to
the special thanks list, and the error will be fixed as soon as I find it.

Thank you for your patience. I've been rather lazy with updating this guide in
the past year or so, but I have finally gone through it again and fixed up the
things that needed fixing up. Without further ado, I present my guide!

This can be a tough battle, depending on who you chose as your starter. If you
chose Chikorita, you're in for a long battle, especially against Pidgeotto and
its Gust attack. If you chose one of the others, you should be OK, but try not
to get too excited just yet, because Gust will still hurt you badly unless you
have levels far above his. If you caught a Geodude, bring one here when it can
use Rock Throw. If not, and if you still can't beat Falkner, go to Route 31 to
catch Bellsprout and trade it for Onix in Violet City, and use that here. Mud-
Slap will still hurt Rock-types, but only a bit. If your Rock-type is level 10
or higher, you've got an easy battle.

o----------------------------------------------------------------------------o

For the life of me, I can't figure out why Bugsy didn't evolve his Metapod and
Kakuna. He would have been a lot more challenging if he had. Even a trainer in
the gym had a Beedrill ... Anyway, use just about anything that can attack for
actual damage to take out his first two Pokemon. Neither of them can stop you.

Scyther is a different story altogether. It's just about faster than most that
you can use at this point in the game, has a Bug-type move that gets progress-
ively more powerful as it's used (though its accuracy is pretty bad), and will
fight against types strong against it surprisingly well. If you have a Pokemon
like Geodude or Pidgeotto with you, then you're all set to fight it. Pidgeotto
specifically can resist Fury Cutter, but Geodude nails Scyther for super-super
effective damage. Your Fire starter works well here, too. Scyther has a number
of weaknesses; all you have to do is expose them.

|-- CLEFAIRY ----|-- DOUBLESLAP, METRONOME, ENCORE, MIMIC -------------------|
|-- MILTANK -----|-- STOMP, ROLLOUT, ATTRACT, MILK DRINK --------------------|
o----------------------------------------------------------------------------o

This battle is incredibly annoying. She will lead with Clefairy, who in itself
is not all that strong, but can potentially be a threat with Metronome. You're
not likely going to see a strong attack pulled, but I've seen it use Blizzard,
Hyper Beam, Aeroblast, etc. so don't push your luck. At any rate, Clefairy's a
weakling compared to Scyther and even Pidgeotto, so don't worry too much.

Miltank is the reason this battle is annoying. It will destroy anything you're
using that isn't resistant to it with Stomp and Rollout. Onix is awesome here,
as it can resist both, and even Geodude can do the same, but Miltank can still
use Attract on them if they're the opposite gender, an attack that renders the
opposite gender incapable of attacking 50% of the time. If you caught an Abra,
trade it in the department store for a Machop, as that's the only way to get a
Fighting-type Pokemon this early in the game, which is Normal-type's only real
weakness. This is also the first gym in Johto where it doesn't matter who your
starter is, as all three fare equally well here, though that's not necessarily
a good thing. Leave your starter for Clefairy and take out Miltank using some-
one else, such as the Pokemon I suggested above. Also note that Milk Drink, an
irritatingly unique move for Miltank, will recover half of its maximum HP when
used, so if it's not stuck using Rollout, you're going to have a tough time in
keeping its HP down if you're under Attract. It really doesn't matter what you
strategize, as long as it works, so think outside the box and you'll win.

---
NOTE: I`m not completely certain on the movesets for Gastly and Haunter 1. I'm
positive they both have Hypnosis and Night Shade, but the other two are a hazy
area based off of memory.
---

Normally I would recommend a Ghost-type for a battle like this, but this time,
I doubt it would work too well. It may cover Gastly and the first Haunter, but
Gengar would thrash it with Shadow Ball. If you have Kadabra/Alakazam at level
25 or higher - preferably Alakazam - it should be able to win, but Shadow Ball
will destroy it if it doesn't. Ground-types also work here, but they are slow,
and Gengar can still hit them with a Hypnosis/Dream Eater combination which is
very painful, and heals Gengar's HP by half the damage delivered to boot. Your
options are high, and if you have a Normal-type and can keep it awake, you can
rather easily beat Gengar, but it has to be a high level. I find Pidgeotto's a
great choice here, as it resists Shadow Ball completely and has Sand-Attack to
make Hypnosis very inaccurate. The choice is yours. Just make sure you have an
Awakening or ten with you.

o----------------------------------------------------------------------------o

This is the gym where your Grass starter finally shines. If you have Alakazam/
Kadabra or Pidgeotto, both of which I've recommended before, bring them too. I
have never found Primeape that strong, and I don't think you will, either. You
won't feel the same way about Poliwrath. Surf isn't all that strong since it's
lacking in the Special Attack department, but it can use Mind Reader, which is
perfect with Dynamicpunch, which is normally inaccurate. It will make Hypnosis
or Dynamicpunch perfectly accurate on the following turn, both of which is bad
for you. Dynamicpunch always confuses the Pokemon it hits, so it's like Super-
sonic that does damage. If you have your Grass starter, which should be fully-
evolved by now, it will do wonders against Poliwrath. Overall, this gym's easy
compared to the last two, but you need some good levels to make that so.

Just like Bugsy before her, Jasmine apparently has issues with evolution ... I
know it makes things easier for you, but she could have had Magnetons for this
battle. If you have Graveler from way back against Whitney and Bugsy, bring it
back as a Golem and it will personally destroy both Magnemites for you with an
almost incredible ease. If it falls to Steelix, bring out a Fire- or Fighting-
type to kill it off. I don't suggest a Water-type because of Sunny Day, a move
that juices up Fire-type moves and weakenes Water-type moves for five turns. I
think you'll find this battle a lot easier than the last three or four all the
same, especially since its weakness to Fire is being enhanced. It can use Rock
Throw to cover this, but unless you're really slow, you'll likely hit it first
and even possibly KO it. It's high-leveled, but it's not difficult to beat.

For some reason, Pryce is actually a lower level gym leader than Jasmine, even
though he's the gym after her in the standings. He's actually on Chuck's level
here. Anyway, use an Electric-type on Seel and Dewgong and they'll fall rather
easily. Fighting- and Rock-types also work here, but the only Rock-type I know
of that isn't also part-Ground is Sudowoodo, so keep that in mind. His staple,
Piloswine, resists Electricty completely but is weak to all three of gen two's
starters, though I wouldn't suggest Meganium here. Either of the others work -
and quite well - and resist Icy Wind and Blizzard, so use them. By the way, if
you're wondering, Icy Wind is a weak Ice-type move that reduces Speed, but you
likely won't be outsped by anything Pryce uses.

This lady is a huge step up from the other gym leaders you have faced up until
now. Her three Dragonairs are almost all the same, aside from having different
elemental attacks each (excluding Fire, since Flamethrower wasn't a TM at this
point in the series). If you caught a Jynx or Swinub and have them evolved and
at decent levels, use them here. They won't do much against Kingdra, which has
no weaknesses you can exploit unless you have a Dragon-type on your lineup. If
you somehow do, it still won't do much, since Kingdra is better. Meganium will
hold its own decently well, as will Feraligatr, but watch out for the powerful
Hyper Beam. It has a BP of 150, the strongest attack force you've faced so far
outside of selfdestruction attacks. Fortunately, you get a free turn after its
Hyper Beam is used, so use it well. This is actually one of the harder battles
of the game, so pat yourself on the back when you win. You've earned it.

All five of Will's Pokemon are part-Psychic, and all of them know Psychic. You
may have a tough fight on your hands. The Elite Four tend to be more varied in
movesets than the gym leaders were.

His Xatu have the same movesets, so if you beat one, you can beat the other. I
think you know Confuse Ray all too well by now. Future Sight attacks you three
turns after it's used for what I think is varying damage, so be on guard if it
is used. Exeggutor and Jynx are both weak against Fire-types, and the rest are
weak to Electric-types. Egg Bomb is a powerful Normal-type attack, but is very
low in accuracy. Lovely Kiss is pretty much the same as Sing and Hypnosis. You
shouldn't see too many surprises with Slowbro. All five have a weakness to the
Ghost-type, and if you have something that can learn Shadow Ball, it will be a
huge asset here. I would recommend Dark-types, but unless you have Umbreon, it
isn't likely that you have one unless you traded - they're almost all in Kanto
for some reason. At any rate, you should have a strong point for all five.

With the exception of Forettress, all of his Pokemon are weak against Psychic-
types, so whip out the Alakazam I've been nagging you about and watch them all
go down one by one. Use a Fire-type on Forettress. The main threats are Crobat
and Muk. Crobat is the evolved form of Golbat and is both deadly fast and very
strong, but it doesn't have attacks to back this up. Muk is also annoying, but
you can resist pretty much anything it does. Be sure to have Full Heals if you
get poisoned with Toxic, which increases in damage each turn if left untreated
in battle. All in all, Koga's not too bad here. You've faced harder.

Alakazam. Seriously. It'll sweep everyone here. If you must, have a Water-type

down all four of his Fighting-types. Watch out for Machamp's Rock Slide, which
is hacked, and Vital Throw, which goes second but never misses. This is easily
the easiest battle in the Elite Four.

Still have that Ice-type from your battle with Clair? It will do well here, as
will your Fighting-type if you used one. Umbreon is a new face to you. It's an
Eevee evolution, and it has solid defense stats. Use anything that can hit for
serious damage to bring it down, but watch out for a possible Confuse Ray/Mean
Look combination. You've seen Gengar, Murkrow and Vileplume before. This ghost
is actually weaker than Morty's Gengar. Its moveset sucks a lot. Murkrow is an
awesome Pokemon, but not particularly tough to bring down. You've also battled
Houndoom before, but this one is way better. Flamethrower and Crunch both deal
disgustingly high damage, and if it doesn't like your choice, Roar will change
your choice to something it does like. To top things off, Karen isn't even the
toughest battle of the five. I hope you still have Potions and Revives.

o----------------------------------------------------------------------------o

Surprise, it's Lance, the Dragon Master you worked with back in Mahogany Town!
Well, he's also the champion, having risen above the Elite Four somewhere over
the last three in-game years. If you remember back in Red/Blue/Yellow, Lance's
team had five Pokemon, and two of his Dragonites were Dragonairs. They are now
fully-evolved and stronger than ever, and he has a Charizard as well. Ice-type
Pokemon are almost a necessity here. Here we go.

All six of his Pokemon know Hyper Beam, which you saw Clair's Kingdra use. You
should also note the high Attack stat of almost all of his Pokemon, so it will
hit hard when used. Pull all of the stops for this battle. You have to if your
dream of being Pokemon Champion is to be realized. Now, all kidding aside, let
us begin.

Gyarados isn't hard. It has a monstrous weakness to Electric-types, so use one
against it. Rock-types also work if you can hit it first and KO it before Surf
KO's you. He'll usually follow with his first Dragonite, which will likely use
Blizzard or Thunder, and the second one will use the other. Ice-types hit this
Pokemon for quadruple damage, and even without STAB, that's a lot. Hyper Beam,
as I mentioned, is awesome on Dragonite.

Aerodactyl will follow the pair of level 47 Dragonites, I think. It will use a
moveset of four Attack-stat moves, including Rock Slide, that rotton cheat. It
also has Ancientpower, which has a small chance of raising all five stats by a
level each. Wing Attack and the two Rock-type attacks all get STAB, and I have
mentioned Hyper Beam enough times now. If you have Golem, use it here to cover
all four attacks. It will also work well against Charizard, which is a starter
from Kanto as you recall. Flamethrower can still do some impressive damage, so
finish it off quickly.

Finally, his original Dragonite. It has Outrage, a powerful Dragon-type attack
that works like Thrash in that it lasts for two or three turns, and then it'll
confuse the user. Safeguard will prevent status conditions for a few turns; it
is a personal favorite of mine. Fire Blast is powerful and meant for your Ice-
types. Finally, at an impressive level 50, Hyper Beam is insane. The good news
is that Dragonite's Special Attack isn't too high, so you'll likely survive an
attack from Outrage or Fire Blast if you're lucky. I wish you luck.

When you win, congratulations, you're the champion!

=====================================

I will be covering the gym leaders of Kanto in the order I myself defeated all
of them in. There's no real order, except that the Viridian leader is last. An
issue with the power plant prevents you from reaching western Kanto initially,
and three gym leaders are over there, but you'll know how to get past all that
in the main FAQs/walkthroughs. Here we go.

Seriously, if you don't have a Ground-type with you, go catch one and level it
up to about level 35-40. It will absolutely destroy this guy. All five Pokemon
are weak to Ground-types, and you have access to Earthquake at this point. You
know how to deal with all of them. Watch out for Zap Cannon, which has no real
accuracy to speak of, but always paralyzes when it hits. Again, if you use the
Ground-type here, that isn't an issue here.

As I said against Will, you probably don't have a Dark-type Pokemon to use. If
you do, it probably isn't a high level, since they're all caught at low levels
in Kanto. If you DO have one in the level 40s-50s area, it'll sweep the entire
gym.

All five of her Pokemon have Psychic, and for the first time since you went up
against Whitney, you're not facing any dual-types. Mr. Mime is there solely to
set up high defenses with Reflect and Barrier, and then use Baton Pass to give
them all to either Espeon or Alakazam. Either one would be dangerous with that
much Defense on them. Espeon isn't too tough, but Psychic hits hard. Alakazam,
her staple, hits even harder with Psychic, and has Reflect as well. You should
know Recover by now. If you have a Steel-type, you should use that here, but I
recommend something that can use Shadow Ball or Faint Attack/Crunch.

To put it bluntly, you can't really lose here. She's far below the Elite Four,
and even Clair, in difficulty. Your levels should be approaching the low 50s -
if they aren't there already - so there are no excuses. Watch out for the pair
of Weezings and their Explosion attacks. There, synopsis over.

By the way, you get a TM for winning. TM06 - Toxic. Don't bother with it. Uses

All Grass-type moves means that any Fire- or Flying-type can walk in and wreck
s*** with ease. No, I'm not counting Acid and Bind, because they suck. If your
starter was Cyndaquil, you've basically already won this battle. If not, well,
I recommended Ice-types, so they'll wreck s*** as well. The only possible con-

You get a TM here, too - Giga Drain. It'll be useful against the next two gyms

All four of her Pokemon can use Surf, an all-around awesome Water-type attack.
You should know - you've had to use it for most of the game.

This is actually a pretty cool battle. All four of her Pokemon have attacks in
case Surf can't be used that hit hard. Her Quagsire is immune to Electric-type
attacks due to its dual-Ground attribute, which leaves Grass-types as its only
weakness. You just got Giga Drain from Erika, so use that here. Golduck's Surf
is powerful, and it has Psychic as well. Lapras is awesome, but Blizzard, as I
think you recall, is not all that accurate. Starmie makes up for that mistake,
choosing Ice Beam instead. All three fall to Electric-types, but Grass is uni-
versally good here.

Don't even worry about the fact that Magmar has Thunderpunch. Just bring Water

damage from both, so Feraligatr and Golem are awesome here. They're also great
against Rapidash, who has crappy moves and even crappier Defense. Easy victory
here. We can at least give him kudos for being better than Brock.

We're almost done, folks.

Welcome to the highest leveled gym leader battle you'll face up to this point.
All of Blue's Pokemon are in the mid-to-high 50s in level, and all of them are
tough. The irony is that with the exception of Arcanine, you have faced all of
his Pokemon before. You faced Pidgeotto against Falkner, and now you fight its
evolved form, Pidgeot. It's more than six times the level of Pidgeotto and far
superior in every way. Use Golem or an Electric-type here. You fought Alakazam
not too long ago against Sabrina. This one is pretty much the same, just a bit
higher leveled. Take it down the same way. Remember that Blue has Full Restore
on hand, though. You faced Brock's Rhyhorn two battles ago, and now you tackle
Rhydon, which is much stronger. Still, it falls almost as easily as Rhyhorn.

His final three are all his staple Pokemon. The Electric-type you beat Pidgeot
with will work even better against Gyarados, but have a high level: I once had
a Magneton that was KO'd by Gyarados, and it was in the mid 40s. Exeggutor has
not changed much since you fought Will, but fights more to the Grass-type side
of itself than the Psychic-type side. A Fire-type Pokemon will still crush it,
or a Flying-type if you are using one. Last is Arcanine, Growlithe's evolution
form. Your Water-type shines here. However, Arcanine has Roar to send it away,
and Blue will restore its HP while you're switching back. Surf, Earthquake and
Rock Slide are awesome moves here. When you finally defeat him, Blue will take
defeat like a man - for the most part - and grudgingly concede to you. You are
now champion of Kanto.

Or, at least, you should be...

See, what people didn't tell you during your journey is that there is one last
Pokemon Trainer for you to fight before you can really be called the champion.
He waits for you at the top of Mt. Silver. Ladies and gentlemen, I welcome you
to the true champion, and someone you will likely recognize.

I recommend nothing for this battle. Red and Blue have diverse teams, but this
one towers over the rest. You have to match his well-balanced team with one of
your own, and they have to be somewhere close to level 60-65 if you want to be
able to win this battle without too much difficulty.

He starts off with a bred Pikachu. I say this because it has Charm, which only
Pichu can learn in the Pikachu family. That, or he's cheating. If Pikachu uses
Charm, it might actually be able to survive a hit from Earthquake. That's like
an insult, so pulverize it as fast as you can. We didn't come this far to lose
to a Pikachu of all things.

Next is Espeon, which you'll remember from your battle with Sabrina. This one,
like the last, uses Psychic. It's much higher in level, so Psychic will attack
for monstrous damage if you're very underleveled. Swift and Mud-Slap aren't in
a noteworthy category - you'll remember Mud-Slap from your battle with Falkner
I think - and Reflect will cut down Ghost-type damage if you're using one. You
should have a strategy to contend with powerful Psychic-type Pokemon by now.

Red's Snorlax follows, and it is quite literally a tank. Its moves aren't very
impressive, though Body Slam is pretty strong, but its massive Attack stat has
enough force to make his attacks hit hard. You're going to hate Rest a lot. It
can also use Snore to attack while it's sleeping, but Snore isn't a tough move
to face. Still, brace yourself for pain. Remember that Amnesia can beef up its
already somewhat impressive Special Defense.

Up afterward is Venusaur, the fully-evolved Bulbasaur. You've faced it several
times over the course of the game, but never at this level. Your Typhlosion is
great here if you have one. If not, a Flying-type is also great here. He takes
a page out of Erika's book and only uses Grass-type moves, so as long as it is
not weak to Grass attacks, your Pokemon should be fine. Sunny Day will let its
Solarbeam work every turn, and Synthesis will bring it more HP while the sun's
out. You saw Erika use Giga Drain.

Charizard, which you've also seen before ala Lance, follows and is much better
than Lance's, if only because it's 31 levels higher. It knows Flamethrower and
Wing Attack for STAB'd damage, and Fire Spin is there to keep you there. Slash
is powerful as well. Rock-types shine here, but Water-types are also great.

Finally is Blastoise, which you've faced once before somewhere near a route up
in front of Victory Road. It's a LOT stronger than that one. Whirlpool is like
Fire Spin, and Surf is powerful. Blizzard you've seen before, and it will call
Rain Dance to beef up its Surf. On the plus side, Rain Dance gives Thunder 100
percent accuracy, so use that to your advantage if you want. It has a s*** ton
of Defense, but you shouldn't be aiming for that anyway.

After finally beating his six Pokemon, Red will mutely concede defeat, and you
will finally be crowned the true champion of the game.

==================================

I'd like to give a special thanks to the following:

- Me, Murk, for making this guide.
- You, the reader, for bearing with me long enough to reach the special thanks
section in the first place. I realize my puns are awful and duly apologize.
- CJayC, for making the website and hosting this guide.
- Psypoke and Bulbapedia, because I would never have been able to fill out all
the movesets and such for every Pokemon without them.
- Nintendo, for making these two excellent games.

Well, that's it. Smell ya later.
