|     Introduction / FAQs on this FAQ     |
+------------------------------------------+

There are some novel codes in this FAQ. I especially encourage looking at
the codes marked "!!!awesome code!!!"

Q. What is the "GS button", and what is the "GS switch"?
A. The GS button is the button on the top of your GameShark that resets
the system so you can go back and enter more codes. The GS switch is
the switch that turns on and off the code effects while you play.

Q. Can a GameShark delete your saved game?
A. Yes, it is possible for the use of a GameShark to indirectly cause you to
lose your saved data. This happens mainly not because of the cheat codes,
but because of the fact that when you send electrical currents through the
game cart in unusual ways, the chances of corrupting your saved data are
increased. Likewise, you can lose your saved data due to dirty connectors,
improperly inserting the cart, or simply turning the GameBoy off and on
  too rapidly.

Q. But if I make sure the GS switch is in "off" mode when I save my game, I
should never lose my saved data right?
A. Not quite. If you've done some experimenting, you might have found that
your saved game stays intact regardless of whether you had the switch on
during saving. Conversely, many players who swear that they have never
saved with the switch on have cried that their saved game has been lost
anyways. Interact warns that for some games, it might be dangerous to save
with the switch on. For Pokémon games, however, using virtually any of the
codes in this FAQ, the switch's position has very little to do with saved
  game protection.

Q. If I shark a game pak, is it forever contaminated and my saved game will
  one day be erased?
A. No, this is a rumor started by anti-sharkers. Your saved game may one day
due to a number of reasons regardless of whether you use a GameShark. If
you shark "fairly", that is, shark to give your pokemon and your game some
settings that could be obtained naturally, then the sharking on your game
will not be detectable once the GameSharkis removed. It is possible to
shark your game in such a way that you can save it in a mode that is buggy
and glitchy, but most people have enough common sense not to save games
like this. If you do something like, say, shark a Squirtle with 999
strength, your sharking is arguably "detectable", but there is no harm
  beyond that.

Q. So, if my saved game can be deleted by chance, how do I protect it?
A. Now we're talking. External storage hardware is the way to handle the risk.
You may use external storage hardware to back up copies of your saved
game, so that if one day your game pak does erase, you can simply restore
the backup of your saved game. This way, you effectively have multiple
copies of your saved game. External storage hardware has many benefits
besides taking sweat of GameShark users. If you have several family
members who all play the same pokémon game pak, you can have a different
save file for each member. Also, suppose you are playing the game fairly
and decide to do something risky like use a one-time TM when you might
change your mind later. With external storage hardware. Furthermore, you
can transfer saved games from one game pak to another. You can even
transfer all the pokemon and the pokémon world from a gold cart to a silver
cart. Even more, external storage hardware is one of the methods through
which pokemon cloning is done. You can make 1000 copies of that Mew that
you love so much and give them out to your friends.

Q. What kinds of external storage hardware exist out there?
A. 1) Mega Memory Card, by Interact - By far the most commmonly used form of
external storage hardware. It can hold up to 100 saved games.
  2) Monster Brain, by Pelican Accessories - This device acts as a GameShark
and Mega Memory Card in one. It can hold up to 150 saved games.
  3) GameShark 3.1, by Interact - This product, as well as later versions of
the GameBoy GameShark, actually allows you to take snapshots of games
and send them to friends over the Internet. Your saved game is then as
safe as your own computer files. This way, if you're short on cash, you
don't need to buy anything in addition to the GameShark but your saved
game can be safe. One shortcoming worth mentioning is that when using
the GameShark 3.1 to restore games, almost the entire saved game will
restore except for the 11 PC boxes that are not active. These PC boxes
are still backed up in a snapshot file, but a difficult procedure is
required to truly restore them to another cartridge.
  4) Pokémon Stadium/Pokémon Stadium 2, by Nintendo - This doesn't back up
entire saved games, but merely just individual pokemon themselves, but
for many users that's good enough. If your saved game gets erased, you
can start a new game on your Game Boy and transfer the pokémon back.
  5) There are probably more many other viable methods for external storage.

Q. I don't have the money to afford a Mega Memory Card or any other external
storage hardware. What can I do?
A. Well, apparently you did have the money to get that GameBoy Color, your
Pokémon Gold/Silver game, and your GameShark, so I don't see why you can't
go the extra mile and get a Mega Memory Card, but oh well. If you're in
this situation, then simply ask a friend of yours who does have one of
these things to back up your saved game on their hardware. If your game
ever does get erased, you can request your friend to restore the saved
  game.

Q. I can't seem to save my game properly with the GameShark 3.1. What's going
  on?
A. The GameShark 3.1 hardware and software are pretty buggy, but they can get
the job done. The snapshot files should end up being 90,131 bytes. If they
come out as a different size such as the common 57,363 bytes, then
something has gone wrong and you should try again. The GameShark software
can only be run on Windows 95/98/Me, but not Windows NT/2000/XP. It is
also recommended that you use a fast computer and a parallel port that has
been confirmed to work for printers or scanners.

Q. How do I create my own GameShark codes?
A. This is done by hacking the game. There are many ways to hack. You can use
emulators, hex editors, and other tools. You can also even use your own
GameShark to generate codes. The "code generator" feature is described in
the instruction manual. If you cannot understand then instruction manual's
guidelines, then I will not answer questions about the code generator. But
I can suggest taking computer science classes at an institution in your
area if you'd like to get more into hacking.

Q. Do the effects of these codes remain when the GameShark is removed?
A. For many of these codes, if you use the code then save the game, then yes
the effect will be saved into your game permanently. Some effects do
  not last however.

Q. How do I use the max stat codes?
A. Sorry, I will not answer questions about stat experience or DVs, because
for some reason people just generate way too many questions about them.

Q. What goes in the "??" ?
A. For some codes that change quantities, quantifier digits go into the "??".
For other codes, specific digits such as pokémon digits or move digits go
into the "??". Just try reading this FAQ a little more carefully.

Q. What are quantity codes?
A. Quantity codes change the amount of some item in the game. For example,
a code to change the number of TM06 that your character carries would
be a quantity code. The code to change the amount of money you are
carrying is also a quantity code.

Q. How do I convert from plain numbers to hexadecimal?
A. Some details of the procedure are given in section 1.

Now, read on.

The above chart converts decimal numbers into their hexadecimal equivalents.
You may also use the Microsoft Windows calculator to perform these
conversions. It is found at Start Menu -> Run..., and then type in "calc.exe"
without the quotes. Then to enable scientific mode, go to the View menu and
select Scientific. By alternating between decimal and hexadecimal mode, you
can do these conversions quickly using a scientific calculator.

This also simplifies the process of obtaining hex values for two-line or
three-line codes. For example, suppose you wished to use the money modifier to
set your money on hand to $300,000. After typing "300000" into the calculator
then converting this hexadecimal, you would obtain "493E0". This means that
the code's three quantifier digits are 04, 93, and E0.

To directly modify the species of any pokémon on your team, remember that you
must put in two lines to make the change complete.

From here on, codes that can be applied to any of the six pokemon on your team
will have all six codes listed. However, you probably only ever need to use
the code in the first column, because it is easier to move a pokémon into the
top of your team than to enter in a different code.

To catch any new pokemon, leave the code on and run around in a grassy area.
If you would like to catch any pokémon at any level, see the section on
in-battle codes.

note) If you would like to add an additional item to your pack, rather than
simply replace an existing item, you must make sure to put in the
appropriate total pack quantity code. Also, the item after the last
item in any pack must be the nothing item 255 (FF).

note) Do not place TMs/HMs in the item pack, ball pack, or key item pack.
Any other items may be placed in the three packs though.

note) If you put an item that can run out in the key item pack, it will
never run out. That is, if you put 1 master ball in the key item pack,
       you can use it indefinitely.

note) The "steal trainer's pokémon" code normally results in catching pokémon
that have no moves. This is unfortunately because the moves are stored

The codes in this section change parts of the pokémon world. They may reset
a part that has already been finished, so that you can go back and complete
it again. The codes may also do the reverse, and finish a part of the world
if you're too lazy to do it on your own.

fly to any    01FFEFD9
 city         01FFF0D9
              01FFF1D9

rename any :  010005D0
 pokémon

note) This code works the same way as the one for red/blue/yellow. If you
need to rename a pokémon whose id # or OT do not match yours, then
put that pokémon at the top of your team and ask the name rater to
rename a pokémon whose id # and OT do match yours. Then while you're
at the name entering screen, pulse the GS switch. When you are finished
the new name will go to the pokémon at the top of your team.

pokémon cloning
 old man   :  018140DC
 old lady  :  018177DC

note) Again, the daycare center is the most efficient known way to clone
pokémon with a GameShark. Go to the daycare center south of Goldenrod
City. Deposit a pokémon with either the old man or the old lady. Then
turn the GS switch on and proceed to withdraw clones from the daycare.
In gold/silver, there isn't any annoying restriction on pokémon that
     know HM moves.

 bike

  walk     :  010AA3CE
through       010AA4CE
 walls        010AA5CE
              010AA6CE

note) Unfortunately, the best walk-through-walls found to date still isn't
that good. When using this code you will sometimes hit a wall oddly
and you'll need to take a step back before you can walk through it.
Also, you can't enter doors until you turn off the code.

   no
 random    :  01000BD2
 battles

note) The no-random-battles code isn't very good either. It doesn't work
in caves, and it stops you from jumping over ledges.

  slide    :  01230BD2
everywhere

note) Even works in caves. It also functions as an effective no-random-battles
     code in caves.

smashing entrances when you go through doors

!!!!awesome code!!!
jump over  :  01A50BD2
anything      01000000
              01A60BD2

note) That code is quite special because it has two lines that both affect
the same memory address. The 2nd line is just a dummy code to cause a
sort of delay. Thus, this code is not guaranteed to work in any other
cheat device (such as a Codebreaker, and including an emulator) other
     than a GameShark.

instant max :  01FFEBD9
  repel

note) The other no-random-battles codes have undesirable effects and don't
always work, so I recommend carrying some level 100 pokémon and using
the max repel code as a no-random-battles code instead.

note) An asterisk (*) indicates that this room can be used with the
     teleport-to modifier code.

note) This list should contain every room in the entire game. However, I did
not have the time to catalog all of these. If someone else would like
to send me the digits for some more rooms, that would be great. The way
to find digits for rooms is to look at the memory addresses 01??00DA and
01??01DA, which contain the digits of the room your character is
currently in. You can use the code generator to find these digits.

teleport-to :  01??FBD9
 modifier     01??FCD9

  dig-to   :  01??F3D9
 modifier     01??F4D9

note) The teleport-to code and dig-to code both use the same kinds of room
digits. The teleport-to code may only reach the same places as those
that can be reached by the fly-to code. In the list of digits, these
places are marked by an asterisk (*). The dig-to code is much more
powerful in that it can reach any room in the entire game.

dig from   :  010300DA
anywhere

note) When using the dig-from-anywhere code, do not leave the code in effect
throughout normal game play. When you wish to dig into the grass, pulse
the GS switch, and then dig.

note) These codes allow you to put items in places that you couldn't put them
in before. For example, you can put a Nintendo64 and a Super NES both
on the desk. You can even put two plants in the room. If you experiment
and put some items in spots where these instructions don't indicate you
can put them, strange results will happen, but some of them are cool
     and not very harmful.
