1) Intro
-----------------
Welcome to this NFl Blitz 2000 FAQ for Nintendo 64. I wrote it because
it is by far the best football game for any console I've ever played (I've
never played NFL2K for Dreamcast, though). It's fun, unique and original
yet very much like the pro's. So on we go.
Be sure to mail me and let me know what you think of this FAQ or tell me
anything I missed.

2) Updates
-----------------
Version 1.7 (1/7/00)
No actual update or changes to the FAQ... I just changed my alias and
e-mail address and replaced it everywhere in this FAQ. Please note that
[email protected] is no longer my e-mail address!
Outkast
[email protected]
P.S. - If you want the reason for the name change, mail me and let me know
and I'll tell you (this isn't the place to explain).
Version 1.2 (12/18/99)
What an update... I've completely re-done the offense and defense
sections by adding play guides that should help you out quite a bit.
I also updated the teams section by adding their ratings according to
the game.
Version 1.1 (11/23/99)
I updated the secrets section, the credits and the copyright info. I
accidentally put in the copyright info that the game was copyright
Nintendo and Acclaim where it actually is Nintendo and Midway. Special
thanks to Bypogizer for letting me know.
Version 1.0 (10/22/99)
This is the first version of the FAQ and obviously, everything has been
added. Please send feedback and let me know what you think, or tell me
anything I missed. Thanks.

5) Offense
-----------------
You are allowed 27 plays on offense; press Z if you want to see a new
page of nine plays. Passing plays are more common but risk interceptions,
while fumbling happens every once in awhile on a running play or QB
sneak. Here is the offensive play guide I have written up.
- The Play name is the name of the play (duh)
- Pass/Run tells if it's a pass play, a run play, or both
- Turnover Rate tells if the play is risky or not to run in case of
turnovers
- Description is my description of how the play is executed
- Use it tells how often you should use it
/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\
Play Name: Switch Up
Pass/Run: Pass
Turnover Rate: Fairly Risky
Description: It's a short pass to either the left or right wide receiver,
depending on which way you make your quarterback roll. A catch will
guarantee 5 yards, give or take 3, and then add on however far you can run
with it depending on how the defense was set up.
Use It: Yes, when you need 10-20 yards
/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\
Play Name: Hurricane
Pass/Run: Both
Turnover Rate: Not Very Risky
Description: A nice little play that is great for a QB sneak if the defense
doesn't send a lot of men to the left. If there are a lot of men to the
left, roll right when you have it and throw it to hit a receiver about 20
yards up for, hopefully, a completion. In addition to this, if you roll
left and throw quick the halfback will get it and have the option to throw
it to a receiver; quite a trick but it's not very successful.
Use It: Yes, QB sneak it for short distance, pass when you need 15-20 yards
/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\
Play Name: Zig Zag
Pass/Run: Pass
Turnover Rate: Very Risky
Description: A simple play where the tight end goes straight out about 10
yards for a pass, or the right wide receiver goes toward the sidelines for
5 yards, not including a run. Interceptions often occur with this play.
Use It: Only if you're desperate to throw the ball for short yardage.
/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\
Play Name: Spider Legs
Pass/Run: Both
Turnover Rate: Fairly Risky
Description: This can be used as a running play to the halfback which
usually results in a loss of a few yards, or a short pass to the halfback
if you make the QB roll to the right. Crossing the line of scrimmage as
the halfback with the ball (the yellow line) will force a run; otherwise
the halfback can toss it to a receiver though barely successful.
Use It: Yes, when you need about 10-20 yards.
/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\
Play Name: Monkey
Pass/Run: Pass
Turnover Rate: Extremely Low
Description: A great play for short yardage, whether you're five yards
away from a first down, or on the opposing team's 5-yard line. Have your
QB roll right and throw it quickly to hit the wide receiver for a short,
yet well-earned 5-30 yards (depending on how the defense is, a big run
can occur after a catch). If you're receiver is well covered or falls down,
hold the ball and hope that you have good pass protection, then wait and
throw it when you find an open man.
Use It: Yes, on first downs and for short yardage.
/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\
Play Name: Slip Slide
Pass/Run: Pass
Turnover Rate: Very Risky
Description: A nice play that sends a pass to either receiver depending
on which way your QB rolls, or a pass over the middle if you stay still.
It works for anywhere from 10-50 yards depending on how long your QB
waits to throw it. However, interceptions are frequent with this play so
don't over-use it.
Use It: Yes, when you need big yardage, but only use it a few times per
game.
/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\
Play Name: QB Post
Pass/Run: Both
Turnover Rate: Fairly Risky
Description: A crappy little play; sometimes a hole opens up the middle for
the QB to sneak for 10 yards, but it doesn't happen that often. Otherwise
you can roll either way and hope for a wide out to be open.
Use It: Never
/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\
Play Name: Da Bomb
Pass/Run: Pass
Turnover Rate: Very Low
Description: The best pass play in the game, right here! Snap the ball and
have your quarterback continuously back-peddle until you're about to be
sacked, and then throw. There should be a man cutting across the field about
50 yards up, or a man on the right running straight about 40 yards up.
It works a lot, and barely ever results in an interception.
Use It: Yes, definetely
/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\
Play Name: Hail Mary
Pass/Run: Pass
Turnover Rate: Very Risky
Description: Basically it's where 4 wide receivers go out and your QB tosses
it up for any of them. In real life, it's used when desperate, but in this
game, it should never be used. "Da Bomb," is a much more reliable pass
play.
Use It: Never
/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\
Play Name: Turmoil
Pass/Run: Pass
Turnover Rate: Very Low
Description: A nice short yardage play; your halfback will roll to the
right and then continue up the right sideline. Throw it to him whenever
you desire.
Use It: Yes, for 5-15 yards.
/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\
Play Name: Dawg Hook
Pass/Run: Both
Turnover Rate: Very Risky
Description: This would be a great play if it weren't for the turnovers;
your running back goes behind you for a pitch off. Then he'll throw
it to whoever is open or he can run it if there's a hole.
Use It: Yes, but use it sparingly
/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\
Play Name: UTB Deep
Pass/Run: Pass
Turnover Rate: Somewhat Risky
Description: This is a great passing play; very reliable. The tight end
and the wide receiver from the right cross each other and then the QB
hits which ever one is open with a pass.
Use It: Yes
/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\
Play Name: X Slant
Pass/Run: Pass
Turnover Rate: Very Risky
Description: This will make the halfback run behind the QB for a pass. After
that, it is the halfback's option to run it or pass it for a trick play.
This play seldom works and often results in a turnover.
Use It: Never
/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\
Play Name: Blizzard
Pass/Run: Pass
Turnover Rate: Not Risky
Description: The wide receiver go out pretty shallow; anywhere between
5 and 25 yards, and sometimes get open for a short pass and a short gain
because the defense is tight.
Use It: Sometimes
/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\
Play Name: Criss X
Pass/Run: Both
Turnover Rate: Fairly Risky
Description: This is yet another trick play; nothing real special. The
running back will be available for a pass and then he can run it or throw
it to an open receiver. Interceptions aren't that great of a threat but
incomplete passes usually occur.
Use It: Once or twice a game
/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\
Play Name: Super Fly
Pass/Run: Pass
Turnover Rate: Risky
Description: This is a nice little play for short yardage when you're
desperate for that 1-5 yards on fourth down... The wide out goes to the
right and is open for a pass 95% of the time, but he'll be nailed by the
cornerback or safety before he makes it 10 yards. The longer your Qb holds
the ball, the deeper your men will go for passes, but the chances of
catching one on this play for a good gain are slim.
Use It: Only for short yardage
/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\
Play Name: Reverse Zip
Pass/Run: Pass
Turnover Rate: Very Risky
Description: This is a good play despite the turnover chances. Your wide
receiver lined up at the right totally comes across to the other side of
the field for a pass. After that, it's the QB's option to hit that man or
the tight end who is in the middle of the field which is where the
interceptions usually come from.
Use It: Yes, but use it sparingly
/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\
Play Name: Leg Break
Pass/Run: Pass
Turnover Rate: Not Very Risky
Description: This is a great play where the right wide receiver and tight
end both go to the same spot for a pass - and there's only one man covering
that area! A catch and a first down (gain from anywhere from 15-50 yards)
is often the result, and a good one at that.
Use It: Definetely
/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\
Play Name: Dog Day
Pass/Run: Pass
Turnover Rate: Risky
Description: The QB is in the shtogun position which buys some time for
the wide outs to get open, and a short pass to either side is usually the
result. One of the receivers is always double-teamed on this play, so
try to hit the other one that's being played man-to-man. The result is
usually 5-10 yards and sometimes an interception (if you throw it into
double coverage).
Use It: No
/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\
Play Name: Split Ends
Pass/Run: Pass
Turnover Rate: Not Risky At All
Description: The tight end will be lined up at the right and he'll come
across to the other side when the ball is snapped. The QB will be in the
shotgun position giving the tight end plenty of time. When you see him open
and heading up the sideline, go ahead and fire that ball to him... This is
a very effective play if the tight end doesn't fumble.
Use It: Definetely
/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\
Play Name: Juke Box
Pass/Run: Pass
Turnover Rate: Not Risky
Description: In other terms, this is a screen play to the tight end. He'll
stand on the left side and wait for the pass to come. If you get it off
quickly enough, he'll be able to run with it for some good yardage, but
if you wait, he'll be creamed by opponents for a loss of yardage.
Use It: Yes
/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\
Play Name: Zone Bane
Pass/Run: Pass
Turnover Rate: Very Risky
Description: The wide outs go; if you're going to be sacked, go ahead and
get rid of it to them for either 10-20 yards or an interception. But if
you have time, roll to the right and throw it to the cutting tight end.
Hit that turbo button as soon as he gets it for some great yardage.
Use It: Yes, if you're winning the game (otherwise it's too risky)
/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\
Play Name: What The...
Pass/Run: Pass
Turnover Rate: Risky
Description: A play in which the two receivers, who are lined up at the
same place, go out to the same spot and cross. It's ok to run when you
are leading, but too risky to run when you are losing. It usually gets
you anywhere from 5-35 yards depending on how long your Qb waits to throw
it.
Use It: Yes, if you're winning the game (otherwise it's too risky)
/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\
Play Name: Clubbin
Pass/Run: Pass
Turnover Rate: Not Very Risky
Description: The running back will run in front of you, then to the right,
and up the right sideline for a pass. Depending on how well your coverage
is, you'll either be sacked or you'll end up with a 5-50 yard gain. Good
to run if you're not near your own endzone in fear of a safety.
Use It: Yes, but use it sparingly.
/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\
Play Name: Shot Taker
Pass/Run: Pass
Turnover Rate: Risky
Description: A great tight end play to run that often results on in a
great amount of yardage. Your two receivers (one on the right side and
one on the left side) both go fairly deep and draw the safeties and
cornerbacks to them, while the tight end goes to the side line with nobody
near him to make a good run.
Use It: Yes, if you're losing
/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\
Play Name: Can Opener
Pass/Run: Both
Turnover Rate: Risky
Description: A good trick play which consists of the right end cutting
right for a pass, then the option to run with it or throw it to the
wide out if the line of scrimmage hasn't already been passed. Running it
is usually the best bet.
Use It: Yes
/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\
Play Name: Pin Wheel
Pass/Run: Pass
Turnover Rate: Risky
Description: One of the games great passing plays - all three wide
receivers and the tight end cross each other about ten yards out and one
of them is bound to be open. But be careful with this play; over-using it
results in turnovers.
Use It: Yes, but use it sparingly
-----------------
6) Defense
-----------------
You are allowed nine plays on defense, not including special teams. Here
are the names of them, how good they are (rated out of five *'s) and how
you should use them.
Play Name: Safe Cover
Rating: ****
Description: This is goos to use when defending a pass play if you
anticipate a deep one. Use the safety for this play because you'll get
the most action.
Play Name: Med. Zone
Rating: ****
Description: This is a good play to use if you anticipate a medium
range pass such as 15-30 yards. Use the safety or cornerback to make the
stops.
Play Name: Suicide
Rating: ***
Description: This is only a good play if you anticipate a pass and need
a sack. Be one of the lineman or a linebacker so that you can dive and
get a sack.
Play Name: 1 Man Blitz
Rating: *****
Description: This is the best defensive play in the game because your
coverage going deep or medium is protected by the cornerbacks and safeties,
and the blitz often results in a sack. Be the left linebacker and line
up between the two linemen on the left to get in quick.
Play Name: Zone Blitz
Rating: **
Description: Not a very good play because your safeties and cornerbacks
don't commit to the receivers in case of a pass play.
Play Name: G Stance
Rating: ***
Description: A good play to choose if you anticipate a running play;
be one of the linemen or linebackers and line up in the slot to either
the left or right (whichever way the run is coming). If it is a trick
play, however, you will get burned.
Play Name: Cover 3
Rating: ****
Description: Another good play if you anticipate a deep pass because the
safety and two linebackers commit to going deep and taking out an open
man if he's going to catch it.
Play Name: Dog Cover
Rating: *
Description: I'm not sure what to say here besides this play never works
for me... Most of the time you get burned no matter what type of play it
is.
Play Name: Cover Deep
Rating: ****
Description: This is the third great play that does it against the deep
pass; pretty much all of your defense besides the linemen cover somebody
who is going out deep for a pass.
Play Name: Goal Line
Rating: ***
Description: Only use this if you anticipate a QB sneak or a short run;
all of your linemen and both linebackers will bunch together to prevent
a short yardage carry.
Play Name: 2 Man Blitz
Rating: ****
Description: The same thing as the 1 Man Blitz only both linebackers
blitz at once. I don't like it as much because it opens up another
receiver and the QB usually hits him before you get to him and take him
down for a sack.
Here are three defensive tips I've come up of on my own:
- If you're going for a sack, be one of the linebackers and set him up
anywhere between two linemen. He will usually break through and go in
for a sack.
- Press the B button to dive and tackle... This is especially helpful
when you're going in for a sack or trying to catch a guy headed toward
the endzone for a touchdown.
- Pass Interference doesn't exist in this game, so if there's an opponent
about to catch a ball, press the B Button to dive and take him out causing
an incomplete pass.
-----------------
7) Special Teams
-----------------
Offensively
-----------
Punting
Pick the punt, then wait until the meter reaches the top to snap the ball.
Try to aim the punt long but out of bounds.
Fake Punting (Pass)
Only try this if you're 20 yards or less from a first, and you're past
your own 40 yard line. Hopefully a receiver on the right will open up
and you'll hit him for a first.
Fake Punting (Run)
Only do this if you need 5 or more yards and you're past your own 40
yard line. The punter should get it and have the option to run it to the
right, left, or right up the gut; whatever looks open.
Field Goals
Pick it as your play, then wait until the ball is right in the middle of
the accuracy meter to snap it. Your timing must be good; takes a while
to get used to but easy after that.
Fake Field Goals (Pass)
Same thing as the fake punt; look for an open man running a route down
the right sideline.
Fake Field Goals (Run)
Same thing as fake punt run, only the place kicker will get the ball
and be forced to run it. This is very risky and barely ever works.
Defense
-------
Returning Kicks
Very basic, get the ball (you'll catch it automatically) hit the turbo,
and run!
Blocking Punts
Pick the block punt, make your guys rush in while holding nothing back,
and dive if you get close to the punter.
