Legend of the River King GBC FAQ/WALKTHROUGH
By: JunoGem (Aaron Knepper)
Welcome to my 2nd FAQ/WALKTHROUGH. This one is one Legend of the River
King GBC. It too is a great game created by Natsume. I'm not the type of
person to play fishing games, but when it comes to Natsume, I just can't
resist playing their games. This FAQ/WALKTHROUGH is just like my Harvest
Moon GBC FAQ/WALKTHROUGH, but it's on a different game.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Version History-
New version-
Version 1.5 (11/29/00)
Sorry about the long delay. Big update, but I still don't have those
three fish yet. Legend of the River King GBC 2 comes out soon. In GBC 2
you can trade with other LORK GBC 2 games as well as Harvest Moon GBC 2
games.
Past versions-
Version 1.0 (7-1-00)
First version. I didn't think I'd make another FAQ/WALKTHROUGH, but I
guess I was wrong. I know I said I would be done with this by June 30th
but I've been extremely busy.
Version 1.1 (7-12-00)
A normal update. Just changing some stuff. Not tot many people E-mail
me, tell your friends about this FAQ/WALKTHROUGH.
Version 1.2 (7/23/00)
Normal update. I'm just changing some mistakes and other stuff.
Version 1.3 (8/3/00)
Not much of an update, still trying to get those fish names.
Version 1.4 (8/15/00)
Not much of a update but I have some bad news, I'll be moving this week
and I won't reply to any mail for a week, but other than that it's all A
OK. JunoGem

3. Story-
Here's the story, your sister (Teruyo) has just fallen terribly ill.
You're are sleeping when you here your mother yells "(place name here),
come here." She tells you that your sister has a rare sickness that can
only be cured but the Guardian Fish, a fish of magical powers. So, you
go out it to the wilderness with a stick with some line on it. So, go
save your sister.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
4. Goal-
Your goal is to save your sister. You will have to go through four
different levels, each with a mission in each. After you accomplish each
mission you have to catch a Guardian Fish to save your sister. Like it
or not, you have to do it (Geez, I sound like my parents).
----------------------------------------------------------------------
5. Character List-
There are tons of characters in this game. If someone calls you brother
or something like that, you're not related to him or her. I don't know
why, but everybody is too friendly in this game.
You: This is the main character. He's you. You get to name him and then
you have to save your sister.
Teruyo: She's on the verge of dying. She is sick in her bed. Without
her, you could just stay home and watch T.V.
Mother: She's the only one who can make the cure, but she needs the
Guardian Fish.
Dam Master: He operates the dam in the Stream. Help his daughter to go
to Lake 2.
Raft Master: His name says it all. He'll make a raft for you if you
bring his lunch to him.
Pupil: A student of the old Raft Master who will fix your raft after it
breaks.
Artist: Trade your Lucky Charm for his Tea Cup.
Lumberjack: Catch a Willow Gudgeon and a Slender Gudgeon for him and
he'll give you his Axe to reach the secret pond in the Stream.
Map Maker: He makes map. He'll tell you where the secret cave is if you
catch him some Smelt
Miner: Catch him some Three-Spined Stickleback and he'll give you his
Pick.
Other characters: As you move on you will meet new and different people.
Most are friendly, so talk to them. Some people buy fish off of you,
some just talk, and some you need to help. Most of these other
characters have names such as Uncle, Aunt, and so on.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
6. Fish List-
Here's a list of all 48 fish, yes 48. There are 8 more fish in the GBC
version. I will also add what bait, lures, flies, and size hook to use
to catch them with. All sizes are in centimeters. Hooks are abbreviated
for S=Small, M=Medium, and L=Large. Also, B=Baits, L=Lures, and F=Flies.
For flies, W=Wet and D=Dry. I hope this isn't too confusing for you.
Sorry this appears messy, some monitors make this appear different than
a chart. It will look normal if you have a huge screen, use your
television for Internet, or if you print this out.

NOTE: The reason I don't have the other three fish listed is I beat the
game, but my sisters idiot friend decided to see what happens when you
turn on a Game Boy, then put in the game, then take it out. Who would
think that would erase my file. Well, I never have to baby-sit J.R. ever
again, I hope.

14. How to Fish-
Many of you may be reading this and thinking, "This game sounds fun, but
how do you fish?" Well here's how.
Bait/Fly fishing:
This is the easiest type of fishing. Press "B" and hold it to cast. The
longer you hold "B" the farther you cast. Then the current will start to
carry the bobber. If you are fly fishing (or using a sinker, not a
bobber) you can reel in your line slowly. If a fish goes after your bait
it will circle the bobber/sinker/fly and you will hear three beeps. Then
you will hear one long beep. During the long beep, press "A" or "B". You
will then go into an under water view. The fish will swim through the
water. When it stops hold "A" or "B". If it resists and you hear a loud
screech, stop holding "A" or "B". Repeat until you catch the fish.
Lure Fishing:
This is the harder type of fishing. You cast your lure out and pull it
in so it acts like a living creature. It a fish comes after it, stop
moving the lure. It will circle it and you'll hear three beeps. Then
you'll hear more beeps, not a long beep. Click "A" or "B" to go to the
under water view. Hold "A" or "B" to pull the line. When the fish comes
near the lure you may need to stop the lure. If/when the fish bights on
reel it in like your bait/fly fishing.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
15. Wild Animals (Fighting)-
In Legend of the River King GBC there is fighting. Every once in a while
you will run into a wild animal. Don't run because you usually just get
hurt trying. In the screen you can choose RUN (to try to leave the
battle), MEAL (to eat something to recover HP), or FIGHT (to fight the
animal). If you choose FIGHT your fist will appear at random spots on
the screen. Press "A" when your fist goes to the spot you want to hit. I
will list the animals HP, their WP (Weak Point), and how much EXP
(experience) you earn. NOTE: The more EXP you have the higher you
maximum HP becomes.

16. Walkthrough-
Here it is, the Walkthrough part of my FAQ/WALKTHROUGH. I hope it is
help to beginners and experts alike.
(1) Torrent
A. The Raft Master
You will wake up to your mother's screaming. She will tell you what has
happened and what you need to do. She will then give you a Charm. Then
go outside and check out the surroundings. Then catch some fish on your
own and sell them, so you have some extra money. Then go talk to
everyone, just to see what he or she says. Don't give any Char to the
Uncle who will trade tips for Char, the tips are all within this
FAQ/WALKTHROUGH. Then go to the Raft Master and talk to him. He'll ask
for some Rainbow Trout. Rainbow Trout will best respond to larva. Use a
medium hook, large ones work too. Catch as many as you can. Then go back
to the Raft Master and give him one of the Rainbow Trout. Then sell the
other fish you caught.
B. Cutthroat Trout for lunch
When you go to get the Raft Master's lunch his niece will ask you to
catch some Cutthroat Trout. Go as west as you can to catch them. Use a
small or medium hook with a larva attached. Catch as many as you
possibly can. Then go bake to the niece. Then take the lunch to the Raft
Master. Then sell the fish.
C. Torrent wrap-up
Now you can fish deeper into the waters. Don't forget, rafting uses up
HP really fast. Catch all the fish you can. Catch all the fish that are
here so you don't have to come back later. I know this sounds really
harsh, but you will have to do a lot of work before you leave. Catch at
least one of each of the fish in the Torrent. Now fish like crazy. Store
cash and buy a Pail (medium). Now save up and buy all of the rods. Now
save up even more and buy all of the flies and the spinner lure. Now by
all the oranges you can, then sleep at the end. Have at least 1,000 Gold
before you leave. I'm sorry I'm so harsh, but it will really help you
out in the future.
(2) Lake One
A. Broken Raft
As you enter Lake 1 you will have no control over your Raft. It will
then crash into a rock. The Raft will break, and then Pupil (the student
of then Raft Master) will offer to fix it for you, for free. Now take
time to explore the map.
B. Got a spot of tea?
Talk to the Artist to trade your Charm for his Teacup. You can't use the
Teacup, but it will help you later on.
C. Terrorized Town
It turns out that a monster, a bear, is terrorizing the town. Well, you
have to be Mr. Nice and save the day. Stock up on Rice Balls and walk to
the south on the bridge. You will eventually run into the bear. By now
your EXP should be high enough to defeat the Bear in four to five hits
on its WP (head).
D. New Raft
After you beat the Bear go back to the Pupil and he will tell you the
Raft has been destroyed. He did make you a new one though. Now fish
until you catch one of every single fish in Lake 1. This will take a
while, but make sure to catch at least one of every fish.
E. Three-Spined Stickleback
Go to the Restaurant in the southeast corner of the map and talk to the
man there. He will give you his pick if you catch him a Three-Spined
Stickleback. They are located in the reeds next to the village. I think
Stonefly wet and Mayfly wet and dry are the best. Now take them to him
and he'll give you the pick.
F. Smelt
If you don't know where the cave is talk to the Map Maker and he'll ask
for some Smelt. Once you catch them for him he'll tell you where to go.
Smelt like Stonefly wet the best.
G. Lake One wrap-up
Catch one of the each type of fish here. You should have all the Flies,
Baits, Lures, Hooks, and Rods you can get so far. I also recommend
having at least 900 Gold. Now stock up on Rice Balls and go to the
Stream.
(3) Stream
A. Helllllpppppppp!!!
As you exit the cave you will be in another town. The Stream is a fairly
small place. You will soon notice that a man is drowning in the water.
Once you save him he will give you the Casting Rod, Small for saving
him.
B. Get the Charcoal
Go farther done the Stream until you get to the Restaurant and talk to
the man there. He'll trade the Teacup for his Charcoal.
C. Quick cash
If your low on cash or you just want more of the green stuff catch some
Ayu and take it to the man by the Restaurant and he'll give you 60 Gold
an Ayu. Not bad is it?
D. Open the dam...
Even further down you'll meet a girl who wants a big Pale Chub. You'll
know it's good enough for her if it breaks a record. Take it to her and
she'll help you out. It turns out that she is the daughter of the Dam
Master. When she takes you there she'll tell her father to open the dam
for you.
E. Stream wrap-up
Stock up on food, chumming, bait, and catch all the fish but the Golden
Carp and the Bitterling (you can't reach them yet). I recommend you have
at least 900 Gold before you leave. Now go to Lake 2.
(4) Lake Two
A. New equipment
As you enter Lake 2 You'll be in the best area for big fish (Eels). When
you get to the town you can now (drum roll please) get the Pail (Large).
You can also buy Lunches, so stock up on them. I also recommend buying
more hooks if you need them.
B. Getting to know the Guardian Fish
In town there are two people who can give you helpful tips on the
Guardian Fish. You don't have to do this, but if you know nothing about
the Guardian Fish you should help the couple.
C. I'll trade your fish for my Axe
On the western side of the map you'll meet an old Lumberjack who will
trade you his Axe for a Willow Gudgeon and a Slender Gudgeon. Willow
Gudgeon and Slender Gudgeon best respond to Small hooks and grubs/worms
or the Stonefly wet.
D. Mr. Generous
You now need to trade your Charcoal for the Wind Chime but the lady in
the Restaurant won't yet. Why, you ask. The reason is you haven't helped
out the lady's family. Go north to a man who wants Killifish, once you
help him out, he'll give you the Lure Rod, Large for free. Then go to
the Stream and help the guy by the Restaurant. Then, back in Lake 2,
help the man near the cliff. Go back to the lady and she'll trade the
Charcoal for her Wind Chime.
E. Lake Two wrap-up
By now you should have all the rods, lures, baits, flies, hooks, a Pail
(Large), chumming, Axe, Wind Chime, all the fish except the Guardian
Fish, a Bitterling, and a Common Carp. It doesn't really matter how much
money you have, but I do hope you have at least 1,000 Gold.
(5) Finishing the game
A. Secret Pond
Go back to the Stream. You should have noticed a pond that you could not
reach before, but now you can get there. Find the lone tree and use the
Axe on it, now follow the path to the pond. Catch a Bitterling (use a
small hook an a worm) and catch a Common Carp (Stonefly wet). Now attach
a large hook and a Dough Ball and use the Wind Chime. No cast directly
into the middle of the pond. The Guardian Fish isn't that hard to catch.
B. Saving Teruyo
After you catch the Guardian Fish you'll end up at your house and your
mother is saving your sister. Your sister will thank you and your mother
will tell you to enjoy your fishing. Now the credits will roll.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
17. FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)-
Q. Are there more then 40 fish in the game?
A. Yes, there are 48.
Q. Why?
A. Just to spice things up in the game. As most of you know there are
only 40 fish in the Game Boy version.
Q. What's the point of Chumming if you can just enter a building and all
the fish return?
A. Chumming is best for areas where you can't get to a building.
Q. Is it true Legend of the River King is coming out on Nintendo 64?
A. Yes, I believe so. I'll keep any information on that on this
FAQ/WALKTHROUGH.
Q. Why can't I catch the Guardian Fish?
A. You must use a large hook and a Dough Ball.
Q. How do you get to Fun Lake?
A. Catch all 48 fish then go to sleep at the Inn in the Torrent.
Q. Can I be attacked at Fun Lake?
A. Nope.
Q: What's the point of the game?
A: To catch the Guardian Fish and save your sister, and most of all,
have fun.
Q: Is it true there is a sequel coming out?
A: Yes, but this time you have to save the planet. It comes out in
November
----------------------------------------------------------------------
18. Hints and Tips-
* Stonefly wet is the best thing to use in the game.
* Only a few fish can resist the Stonefly wet.
* Take the long way if it saves you HP.
* Never run from a fight, it usually ends up that it fails and you get
knocked out.
* If you enter a building all the fish will return to there original
places, don't waste your Chumming.
* Spinner Lure is the best lure.
* Worms are the best bait in the game, and the cheapest.
* If you need money catch Ayu in the Stream and sell them to the guy by
the Restaurant.
* If you use the Net and find bait, use the Net one space away, then
back where the bait was you'll find more bait. This is an easy way to
get tons of free bait.
That's all for now.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
19. In Game Codes-
There aren't that many, but here they are.
Music Cheat
To play music while fishing, press "A" and go to the Fishing Memo. Then
when you continue to fish there will be music, not the fishing sounds.
Get Rich Quick
If you want a lot of money go to the Stream and catch Ayu and sell them
to the Uncle who buys Ayu.
Fun Lake
To get to Fun Lake catch all 48 fish and then the Guardian Fish. At the
end of the credits it will say the Fun Lake has been unlocked. Now go to
the Inn at the Torrent and sleep. You'll wake up in Fun Lake. To leave,
sleep at the Inn there.

get Fun Lake catch all 48 fish and then the Guardian Fish. It will tell
you that you unlocked Fun Lake at the end of the credits. Go to sleep at
the Inn at the Torrent to get there. To leave, go to the Inn. There is
no fighting, and only one building (the Inn).
