Version: 1.3
Status: Complete
Guide written for Barbie Pet Rescue for the GameBoy Color.

This guide is NOT compatible with the PC game of the same name as the PC
version is actually much larger than this one and many aspects of it are
completely different.

                       ~~ 1. STARTING THE GAME ~~
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

Start up the game as normal. The game will automatically show the beginning
sequence, to explain the story. The story concerns the location of the game -
"Green Arbor Park", and the fact that a storm has led to many of the local
pets and wild animals being disrupted. The residents of this community have
called upon Barbie to aid them in their plight and rescue the animals. It is
up to you, acting as Barbie, to save these poor defenseless creatures through
playing a series of minigames to make them well enough to return to their
homes.

When starting the game, you will see the main menu, consisting of "New Game",
"Options" and "Password".
- New Game is self-explanatory.
- Password is this game's equivalent of a save - enter a password that
you have been given at this screen to return to a game in progress.
- Options will bring up a sub-menu where you can turn the music and effects on
or off, see the game credits (the people who made the game), or select
"Practice" to try out any of the minigames which you have previously played.
Navigate the menu by using the D-pad and select an option by pressing "A".
Press "B" to exit a sub-menu and return to the main menu.

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
                     ~~ 2. CONTROLS AND IN-GAME MENU ~~
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

Use the D-pad to move in different directions and navigate icon menus in-game.

A button is to select an option, or jump.

The icons on the left of the main room in the game are the different options
which you can select to progress. Navigate these using the D-pad and select an
option using the A button. From the top, this is what they mean:

- Play room - play with and care for animals
- View rescue certificates
- Answer the phone
- Start a rescue mission (after answering phone)

When embarking on most rescue missions, you will have to go through a short
course using one of your vehicles as your journey. The vehicles available are
all controlled by using the following:

D-pad Up    -  Move vehicle towards top of screen
D-pad Down  -  Move vehicle towards bottom of screen
D-pad Left  -  Reduce speed
D-pad Right -  Accelerate vehicle
A button    -  Jump

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
                        ~~ 3. BASIC PRINCIPLES ~~
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

The basic idea of this game is to rescue animals from around the area, care
for them to see them back to full health and well-being, and then return them
to their owners.

Select "New Game" from the main menu. You will be taken to a screen where
Barbie is standing behind a desk. There will be, on the left of the screen, a
selection of icons. Navigate these using the D-pad. To select one, use the A
button. The top icon takes you to the Play Room, where you can take care of
an animal you rescued. There will be a cat there at the start of the game,
which I will explain momentarily. The icon below this allows you to view your
certificates - you collect these as you rescue the animals. The bottom green
icon is to answer the phone, which will assign you an animal to rescue. Below
that will appear a red icon, which is what you will use to rescue an animal
after taking a call. You will find that you cannot use this icon until you
have taken a call. After answering the phone and selecting this icon, you
will need to firstly reach the animal by using the vehicle provided, or just
play a mini-game. This varies according to the animal you are rescuing. The
icons that you can select will always be green, and the ones which you cannot
yet select will be red. You will be able to answer your first call right from
the start of the game, although there will be an animal waiting for you so you
might want to take care of that first. If at any stage you have more than one
animal waiting to be nursed back to health, you can navigate between them by
using the Left and Right directional buttons.

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
                        ~~ 4. RESCUE MISSIONS ~~
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

Answering the phone in the office gives you information about any animals you
may need to rescue. Specific missions are given to you randomly until all the
missions have been completed and are therefore listed here in no particular
order. In most cases, reaching the animals will be achieved through driving
one of Barbie's vehicles along a road or river, avoiding any obstacles that
cross your path. Obstacles can be avoided by jumping over them.

When driving, the screen will scroll only at a fixed pace. If you have
any difficulty in completing these driving levels, note that you can slow the
vehicle down in order to get a good run-up for a jump by pressing left on the
D-pad and then accelerating by pressing right until you have cleared the
object. Amazingly, Barbie's vehicles seem to fly through the air for as long
as the jump button is being pressed! You will have three chances to hit an
object. Three hits and you have to try again.

Once you reach an animal, you will generally need to play a mini-game of some
sort to retrieve it if you can't simply pick it up. If the animal doesn't
appear on the screen you arrive at when picking up an animal, move Barbie to
either side to enter a new screen. Picking up animals is always done by using
the D-pad to press the Down button. When rescuing the animals that require the
completion of a mini-game, you will not need to drive.

The animals that require completion of a mini-game are listed here:

o Owl - photo safari mini-game - use the D-pad to move the camera and press
the A button to take a photo. Ensure the camera is right in front of the
owl when you do this. This one is a little tricky without practice, but is
just a matter of fast reflexes. You can only take three photos without
seeing the owl in order to successfully complete this game. This took me
plenty of tries to get right the first time I played and is in my view
the most difficult part of the whole game! The camera flash must hit the
owl to get each photo as required.

o Penguin - ice cream craze mini-game - use the D-pad to move the paddle
to bounce the ball up. Repeat until the penguin is free. You will have
three balls only so be careful not to lose all three or else you will need
to try this level again. In case this makes sense to you, this is
a simple Arkanoid (Break Out) clone. If it doesn't, think of the paddle as
a long bouncy object that moves left to right only. Destroy enough bricks
to clear a path so the ball makes contact with her. Simple and fun!

o Puppy - apple turnover mini-game - move the basket to catch the apples
using the D-pad. You are only permitted to miss a maximum of three apples
in order to successfully complete this game and rescue the puppy. Note that
some apples bounce randomly in mid-air (how?!), but they do so as soon as
they start falling pretty much, so it's easy to see when this will happen.
One press of the D-pad moves the basket across beneath one set of apples,
so take care to just tap the left and right buttons.

All other animals will require you to drive to them and pick them up as
explained above.

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
                       ~~ 5. CARING FOR ANIMALS ~~
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

After you rescue an animal, you must care for it in some way to
make it better. In the Play Room choose "Pet Care Hints" and "Pet Records"
to see what you need to do for the pet you're caring for. After you have
filled the animal's health and happy points by playing with it and caring
for it you must return it to its home by selecting the "Jeep" icon in the
Play Room. This section will explain how to nurse an animal back to full
health in the Check-Up Room. Filling an animal's happy points meter involves
looking after it in the Play Room, explained in the next section.

To enter the Check-Up Room, select the top option from the Play Room. Once in
there, a selection of new icons will appear on the left hand menu. The symbols
represent the following options, from the top down:

- Bandage - to treat an injured animal.
- Vitamins - to nourish an animal.
- Food
- Brush
- Bathe
- Paw - return to the Play Room.

The most appropriate option(s) to select will vary according to the animals'
individual needs although health points will not be affected if an incorrect
option is selected. Note that if you choose an option that the animal does not
enjoy, the happy points may reduce so always check Pet Care Hints beforehand.
If you have chosen the correct option, you will notice that the health
meter has increased by one point. Once the animal has returned to full health,
you should go back to the Play Room and attend to the animal's emotional needs
which is explained in the section below.

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
                      ~~ 6. PLAYING WITH ANIMALS ~~
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

Returning the animal to full happiness in order to gain its trust enough to
return it home involves entering the Play Room and playing games with the
animal to provide it with entertainment. The following options appear on the
screen represented by icons from top to bottom:

- Go to Check-Up Room
- Play with animal
- View Pet Records
- View Pet Care Hints
- Return animal home

Pet Records and Pet Care Hints together provide you to clues as to what you
will need to do for that animal since all are individual and therefore have
different needs. I recommend viewing both of these before caring for animals
so that you will know what the best thing for each one is. Playing with pets
is the only way to restore happy points, so this is the main aim of this room
before selecting the option to return the animal. Selecting the "Play" option
will result in one of three different mini-games being introduced, which are
detailed below:

o Rascal Run-Around. Paw Prints will appear in the bottom-right corner of the
maze, and you must direct them to the bed in the top-left corner. Do this
by holding down the relevant directional button on the D-pad to guide the
paws through the maze within the time limit. This is tricky to control -
if you change your mind whilst moving in a direction, the paws will not
turn around until you reach a wall, but just hold down the button until
  they do.

o Snacktime Challenge. A grid of pictures will appear on the screen showing
different animals and their foods. These pictures are colour-coded as well
as relating to the types of foods animals typically eat. Memorise where
each picture is before they all flip over, and then match the pairs by
moving with the D-pad and selecting cards with the A button. You will have
three chances to do this correctly, which are represented by hearts
at the top of the screen.

o Critter Keep Away. This will involve playing with a cat (always a cat no
matter which animal you are caring for!) by hitting a ball of wool back
to it until it is satisfied. The paws on-screen work in a similar way to
pinball flippers - use the A and B buttons to hit with the different paws
(I recommend using both A and B buttons at the same time rather than one
at a time as the controls are shaky here). Move the paws left to right
with the D-pad. This one can be difficult to grasp purely because the
controls don't seem to work too well for it, but I haven't been able to
find any way to make it easier.

Once an animal has been returned to full happiness, it can be returned home by
selecting the jeep icon in this room.

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
                        ~~ 7. RETURNING ANIMALS ~~
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

Once an animal has been cared for and returned to full health and happiness,
then you will be able to select the jeep icon from the play room to return the
pet to its parent. Selection of this will lead to Barbie taking the animal and
going to whichever of her vehicles is relevant for you to go through another
driving level to take it home. Once you are there, you will need to play the
"Parent Match" mini-game in order to complete the return.

"Parent Match" involves a picture of the animal's parent (basically an older
version of the animal you just cared for) being split into three sections on
the screen. You will get some time to look at the complete picture, and then
the sections will jumble up - the picture for every animal is here and you
must reassemble the picture within the given time limit. This is achieved by
correctly identifying the correct animal according to the picture you saw to
start with. It's difficult to explain, but hopefully you should understand
what I'm talking about when you see it! Use the D-pad to move up and down to
the different sections of the picture and to rotate left and right to slide
the alternate pieces of picture across. It is easiest to find the correct
middle piece first (the body part) as for some of the animals, very little
of the head or paws appears on the complete thing.

If you do not successfully complete the driving level required to return the
animal to its parent, the animal will lose health and happy points. You must
then care for the animal again in order to get another chance to return it
home. This is simply a matter of getting more practice so don't lose heart.
As for failure to complete the Parent Match game, you will be able to try
again if you fail with no penalty so long as you do not return to the office.
If you return, then you will have to go through the driving level again.

Each animal successfully rescued, looked after and returned to its home will
provide you with a certificate which can be viewed by selecting the "View
Certificates" option in the office. The game is complete when all animals have
been retrieved and returned.

~~ 8. THINGS I LEARNT WHILE WRITING THIS GUIDE ~~
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

o From Barbie's current bright orange skintone, I can only hazard a guess that
she is unfamiliar with the hazards of UV rays, especially for blondes. For
this reason, I want to use this opportunity to do my part for medicine.

o Always check your skin regularly for any new moles that may appear or (and
this is extremely important) any changes that may occur with existing moles.
This is especially vital if you have fair skin. It doesn't take long and can
potentially save your life. I check my own moles in the bath weekly now, as
I actually had a skin cancer scare whilst writing this. Fortunately I'm OK,
but many people aren't. Skin cancer IS deadly and no-one is immune, so make
sure you look after yourselves. It only takes a couple of minutes of your
time. ANY change and please go to a doctor immediately. The sooner you go,
the easier and quicker it is for them to sort it out.

o And if anyone knows where I can buy a bright pink car that jumps, please let
  me know...

o YOU LOVE IT!!
