I know this is a rather bare bones FAQ and unlike what I usually
write, however, when I first got this game I wanted to know all the different
ways to obtain duel points as well as how many you could get by doing what.
Eventually, some of my friends obtained this game and wanted to know the same
information, so I handed them what little I knew.  And soon I found more
people on the internet that also wanted to know the same thing, so I finally
just decided to take what I have, figure out the rest, and organize it into
something that people may get some use out of.  So hopefully, this guide
will help you get an idea of the best way to obtain duel points so that you
will be able to obtain all the cards and fully experience this game.

Duel points are the currency of this game.  They are used for
everything from buying cards (singles, sets, packs and decks) to entering
tournaments.  They are obtained by doing a variety of different things, but
mainly are gained by dueling other characters in the game and by winning
tournaments.  In order to fully play everything in this game, you will
need to eventually obtain a very sizeable amount of duel points.  So it
is important to get as many as you can, when you can.

At the start of the game, most of your duels won't be anything
special.  They will be against the people (and animals O_o) you find on the
street.  After the duel, you will be awarded points on various outcomes that
happened during the battle.  This section will tell what outcomes you can
obtain points by, and how to judge how many points you will receive
accordingly.

IN THE 4 MAIN DUELING AREAS:

Total damage inflicted on opponent
- 1 duel point awarded for every 100 points of damage inflicted on the
enemy (Including direct attacks, spell/trap cards and monster effect)

Total damage inflicted in battle
- 1 duel point awarded for every 100 points of damage inflicted on the
enemy (NOT including direct attacks, spell/traps or monster effect)

Number of monsters destroyed in battle
- 20 duel points awarded for every monster you defeat in battle.
Monsters destroyed due to magic, trap or monster effect do not
       yield duel points

Victory Conditions

- 50 points for depleting opponents life points to zero
- 50 points by winning with Last Turn.
- 100 points for decking out your opponent
- 1,000 points for winning by obtaining all 5 pieces of Exodia
- 1,000 points for spelling out FINAL with Destiny Board
- 1,000 points after 20 turns have passed after activating Final Countdown

Number of turns

- If the Duel lasts 40 turns or more, the points received are Halved.
- If the duel lasts 3 or 4 turns, the points received are doubled.
- If the duel lasts 2 turns, the points received are mutliplied by 5
- If the duel is over in 1 turn, the points received are muliplied by 10!!

After you have beaten the Nationals Tournament, a new area is
accessible for dueling.  It is labled as ??? on your stage select screen, and
judging by the characters dialogue in there, is probably what the show dubs
as "The Shadow Zone".  Regardless of what it is, dueling in this area is a
little bit different than it was in the initial four locations.  First off,
there are no restrictions on what cards can and can't be played. So you can
build a deck with any card and with as many of any card that you wish.
Secondly, as the opponents here use stronger (and cheesier) decks than your
probably used too, the points awarded for general duels has changed
accordingly.

IN THE ??? AREA:

Total damage inflicted on opponent

- 20 duel points for every 100 points of damage inflicted on the enemy
(including direct attacks, spell/trap cards and monster effect)

Total Damage infliced in battle

- 20 duel points for every 100 points of damage inflicted on opponent
NOT including direct attacks, spell/traps or monster effect)

Number of monsters destroyed in battle

- 20 points for each monster you defeat in battle.  Monsters destroyed due
to spell, trap or monster effects don't count toward this

Victory conditions

- 250 points for depleting opponents life points to zero
- 250 points for winning with Last Turn
- 500 points for decking out your opponent
- 5000 points for winning by drawing exodia
- 5000 points for winning by spelling out FINAL with destiny board.
- 5000 points after 20 turns have passed after activating Final Countdown

Number of turns

- If the Duel lasts 40 turns or more, the points received are Halved.
- If the duel lasts 3 or 4 turns, the points received are doubled.
- If the duel lasts 2 turns, the points received are mutliplied by 5
- If the duel is over in 1 turn, the points received are muliplied by 10!!

After certain conditions are met (usually after obtaining a certain
card or buidling a certain type of deck) characters on the street will
occaisionally challange you to a special duel with certain handicaps.  These
can range from a match with Solomen (Grandpa) where the only way to win is by
drawing Exodia, to a Luck duel with Joey where you have to win by using cards
dependant on "luck".  In these special duels, you are sometimes "given" a
special deck to play with, and other times you have to use a deck you
constructed yourself.

Depending on whom you have a special duel with, one of two things
will happen when you win.  You will either be given a large amount of a
certain type of cards. (165 water related cards for beating Makos O_O) or you
will be given 700 duel points.  This can sometimes be advantageous to you.
The Joey duel is relatively quick and easy, and you usually wouldn't earn
that many duel points against him anyways.  However, it can sometimes hinder
your progress as well. Normally when you win by Exodia, you'd get
one-thousand duel points, but in the special duel against Grandpa, its cut
down to the 700.

Even though these duels are fun, and sometimes challanging, due to
inconsistancy of them occuring and the limitation on what you can receive for
winning, I wouldn't reccomend these for serious point accumulation.

Tournaments are the fastest way to way to accumulate duel points in
this game.  Some tournaments also have added restrictions to the cards you're
allowed to use ON TOP of the weekly restrictions you already have.  Also, as
opposed to the one round duel that occurs in general street dueling,
tournaments are usualy best two out of three rounds.  Tournaments also
consist of you having to defeat multiple oppoents (obviously) over the course
of a couple days, at one opponent a day.  So expect to have to duel over the
course of days before you obtain the final pay off.  Thankfully, your usually
rewarded with duel points after each match, thus you can improve your deck,
if need be, before the next match takes place.   Here is a list of all the
Tournaments and what you win after each match.

TOURNAMENTS

Weekend Tournament

- 300 points winning saturday duel
- 700 points for winning sunday duel

KC Tournament

- 1000 points for first match.
- 2000 points for second match
- 3000 points for third match
- 4000 points for 4th match (quarter finals)
- 5000 points for 5th match (Semi Finals)
- 10,000 points for winning the finals

Limited Tournament

- 1000 points for winning the first duel
- 1000 points for winning the second duel
- 1000 points for winning the third duel
- 1000 points for winning the fourth duel
- 1000 points for winning the fifth duel
- 1000 points for winning the sixth duel
- 7000 points for winning the seventh and final duel

Regionals Tournament

- 2000 points. Only after winning all 3 matches

Championship Tournament

- 30,000 Points!!!

Survival Tournament

- 100 duel points for beating the first opponent
- 200 for the 2nd
- 400 for the 3rd
- 800 for the 4th
- 1,600 for the 5th
- 3,200 for the 6th
- For the 7th duel, you points are calculated as if it were a regular duel
in the ??? area plus your remaining Life points are converted to
       Duel points.

Dark Survival Tournament
- Duel Points received equal your remaining life points multiplied by the
       number of opponents you faced

*CAUTION* - If you lose, your current duel points are divided by the number
       of opponents you faced

Though I encourage you to play this game however you'd like too, here
are some of my ideas on how to obtain the most duel points on what ever stage
of the game your in.

JUST STARTED:

At the very start of the game, use the duel points your given to
build a standard deck, if possible, try to comprise your starting deck to
be of a "Beat Down" type. Since, at this point, you just started the game,
try to ensure that you have no monster with an attack score of less than
1600.  And if possible, have a way to power them up by use of field cards,
spells or traps.  (Reinforcements is a great starting trap card)

Go out and start dueling anybody, until you gain the feel for a
beat down.  Then take whatever duel points you have earned, and try to obtain
cards to strengthen your beat down theme.  At this point, try to obtain cards
with an attack score of 1700 or higher as well as more equip cards if need
be.

Once you have a basic beat down started, go out and duel Tea`.
Tea`'s deck consists mainly of cards centered around her regaining life and
weak monsters.  If your deck is built sturdy enough, you should easily be
able to toy with her.  Destroy any monster she lays down in battle.  Then
when her field is clear, attack her directly until her life points are very
low.  At this point, wait for her to build up her life points some more then
repeat the process.  Doing this, you should easily be able to obtain any
where from four to eight hundred duel points after each match with her.

AFTER ALL THE PACKS ARE UNLOCKED:

After you have unlocked all the buyable packs in Grandpas' shop (this
is accomplished by, roughly, beating each duelist in the street once and by
winning the weekend tournament a few times)  and have obtained a decent
amount of duel points I suggest one of two things. Or both if you so desire.
First suggestion is to build up your beat down deck, so that you may further
drag out your battles with Tea`, and thus earn more points when dueling
against her.  Alternatively, you can start to work on an Exodia deck. (some
cards that I recommend to put in for an early Exodia deck, other than Exodia,
are Sangan, Witch of the black forest, Skelangel, pot of greed, gracefull
charity, dark hole, Airknight Parshath, jar of greed, Giant Germ,
nimble momonga, card destruction and Des Lacooda)

Even though this can be very tricky, as a lot of those cards are
often limited or restricted, if you can build a decent exodia deck you will
now be earning at least one thousand duel points for every duel won. And if
you can get Exodia out within your first 4 turns (unlikely, but possible) you
can gain up to ten times that amount!

AFTER WEEKEND TOURNAMENT IS BEATEN 7 TIMES:

After you beat the Weekend tournament 7 times, you should be able
to register for the KC Tournament.  At this point, register for the KC
tournament.  The KC Tournament consists of 1 duel every saturday, with duel
points obtained increasing after every duel.  In between saturday duels, use
a combination of using your exodia deck and/or dueling Tea` with a beat down
deck should net you some significant duel points by the time you win the KC
Cup.

AFTER THE KC TOURNAMENT IS BEATEN:

After you have beaten the KC Tournament, you should have accumulated
a strong deck as well as a decent amount of duel points. So from this point
on its all about the tournaments.  Keep entering them, and duel Tea` and/or
use your exodia deck when needed to obtain more points.

AFTER THE ??? AREA IS UNLOCKED:

After you have unlocked the ??? area, its almost like a whole new
game.  All the card restrictions are out the window, so you can now build
some truely terrible decks. (In a good way! =D) I suggest the first thing you
do is locate Rare Hunter in this area and defeat him.  That way you will be
able to buy his deck from him. (for a very HEFTY price).  His deck is an
Exodia deck.  So take the cards you get from there and revise your Exodia
deck as needed. (or if you haven't made one yet, now is the time).  I
suggest having you deck comprise mostly of sangans, witches, dark holes,
graceful charities, upstart goblins, pot of greeds and jar of greeds.  Put
in anything you can to ensure that you can get all 5 pieces of Exodia in your
hand fast!  By winning with Exodia in the ??? you get at least five thousand
duel points for each victory!

AFTER THE DARK SURVIVAL TOURNAMENT IS UNLOCKED:

Once you have unlocked the Dark Survival Tournament and have
accumulated at least seventy thousand duel points, as well having built a
deck that can take on a horde of opponents, the best option you have is
taking on the Dark Survival Tournament.  You can participate in it as many
times as you want and, as long as you know when to quit when your ahead, can
pay off some truely insane duel points. Best part is even though your
required to have at least seventy thousand duel points to enter, it actually
costs nothing! So if your patient, you can really rack up some duel points
here.

WHAT I DON'T RECOMMEND:

Even though winning with Destiny Board, Final Countdown and Last Turn
yields the same points as winning with Exodia, I highly recommend against
using them to gain duel points. I'll explain why here.

DESTINY BOARD:

In my experience, it is not as easy or fast to spell out FINAL, as
there are no cards that allow you to get Destiny board in your hand faster
or that help you spell out FINAL any faster either.  Also, while trying to
Spell FINAL, you give up the privelage of using any other spell or trap
cards, which can really restrict your dueling capabilities.

FINAL COUNTDOWN:

Main reason I'm against this, is speed.  With a good Exodia deck you
have the possibility of winning in the first 4 turns, which can yield a nice
multiplier to your duel points. Final Countdown is unable to get that luxury.
Also, if you draw Final Countdown late in the duel, you run the risk of having
your duel points HALVED if it causes you to win during or after the 40th turn.

LAST TURN

At first, I wasn't against this card.  With the right deck build, this
could potentionly be used to win as fast, if not faster, than exodia under the
right conditions.  Unfortunately, winning with this card counts as dropping
your life points to Zero.  Not a victory condition in its self. So you can't
really rack up many duel points by winning with this deck.

*As a final note, I'm not saying don't use any of the deck types above, i'm
just saying that when it comes to gaining duel points, they aren't as fast
or as reliable as a good exodia deck. If your not trying to amass duel points
then I encourage you to give those decks a try, so that you can expand your
knowledge of decktypes.  Remember, this is a game. The main thing you should
be doing is having fun.

Don't know why I keep posting this, but apparently some of you are curious.
So here it is...

9/15/2005 - Got the game, and played the hell out of it
9/16/2005 - noticed points obtained varied on different outcomes
9/20/2005 - Started to take special note on what affects the points received
10/1/2005 - helped out some friends with my notes, decided to figure out the
       rest of the duel points
10/10/2005 - started formatting this into a decent guide, and started taking
       notes on ??? area
10/23/2005 - finally decided this guide was "complete", and submitted it to
       Gamefaqs.
11/2/2005 - Remembered that there was at least two more ways to win duels, so
added notes on points received for winning with those conditions. Also
added in that my FAQs and guides can now be found at 2 more sites,
       other than Gamefaqs.
