=========================
Advance Wars is one of those games with a huge number of secrets.
There are hundreds of maps, special missions, COs and so on to unlock,
but no-one has written a secrets FAQ yet, so here you go. I hope
it helps, and it should clear up some misconceptions and rumours
(like having to get all S-ranks to unlock Nell).
NOTE: I've been experimenting with ASCII headings, so if some look a
little weird then forgive my poor taste.
This guide is Copyright (c)2003 Duncan Hardy (Super Nova).

OK, this really is the final version. I've added some Gameshark
codes, essential for all secrets guides, but overlooked by me.
Version Final

Two versions ought to just about do it for this FAQ - I really can't
see what remains to add to it. I included the My Progress section,
and don't see what else can be added. Only minor corrections will be
made in future. (I have other FAQs in the pipeline anyway, so I don't
want to add any more to this one).

There is more or less everything needed here. I have covered every
secret and unlockable I know of, but if you have any additions/
corrections to make feel free to email me, I'd be grateful of any help.

/3.1 Commanding Officers\
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Here is the complete list of COs, how to unlock them and how to use
them. I've added some strategies for each which should make unlocking
other secrets easier.
..........
--[Andy]--
''''''''''
Game Description: Mechanical wizard with good all-around skills.
Description: Andy is the worst CO. Definitely. You can say "he's good
all round, and has no real weaknesses", but no strategy can be planned
with Andy that is guaranteed to work. With Sami, you know that if you
storm the opponents HQ with five mechs you will capture it, unless
you have undergone lobotomy. It's a shame that you must use him so
much in campaign mode. All right, to be fair to him he is a beginner's
best friend, as he will work adequately whatever strategy you use. It's
just a pity that he won't excel at anything either.
Attributes: All units have no strengths or weaknesses.
CO Power: Hyper Repair. Recovers 2HP (maximum of 10) to every troop
and gives them a 10% attack bonus. Useful after Tsunami (Drake's CO
power).
How to Unlock: Unlocked by default.
.........
--[Max]--
'''''''''
Game Description: Gung-ho strongman. Tops at direct combat, weak over
distances.
Description: Max is one of the more useful COs. Some maps are made for
him, but he will need some resources in order to build the necessary
troops to win. He has a 50% attack bonus with all his direct attack
units (tanks, Mid tanks, A-Airs, recons, bombers, fighters, copters
subs and cruisers) and will tear apart anyone without exceptional
defense. With Max Force, his power, only Kanbei and Vs. Sturm will not
lose their non-tank units in one hit. Unfortunately, Max has a 10%
decrease in long-range power, and has one square less range. This makes
his artillery useless and his rockets poor.
As a result, the best strategy to use with Max is all-out combat in
the open. If there is a field, at least 6x6 squares, he should move in
for the kill on any units there. This makes him a great choice for such
missions as Kanbei Arrives!, where he can charge in and destroy all
opposition. Where Max will fail is in narrow "bottlenecks", where enemy
snipers will make quick work of him as only one unit can attack at a
time.
Attributes: Direct units have a 50% attack bonus. Long-range units
have a 10% decrease in power and one square less range.
CO Power: Max Power. Gives direct units a 25% attack bonus and other
units 10%. Direct units also move one square further.
How to Unlock: Unlocked by default.
..........
--[Sami]--
''''''''''
Game Description: Infantry unit specialist. Has trouble with other
ground troops.
Description: One of the best COs. She has two techniques which can
complete every single War Room map with at least a B-rank. Because her
infantry and mech units have a 20% attack bonus, they can attack larger
units effectively while saving money. It takes four of Sami's mechs
to kill one medium tank on full HP. The cost of four mechs is 1200G.
The cost of one Mid tank is 1600G. Do you see how quickly you save
money? The other main advantage Sami has is her superior capturing
skills. She captures 50% faster than normal, so you have to wound an
infantry unit to 6HP to stop it from capturing in two turns. This makes
capturing HQs easier, as you can take one attack from a weak unit and
still finish capturing the next day. Her CO power helps her move her
units further so they can reach their destination with as little
resistance as possible.
The strategies to use in the War Room maps are both cheap and both
work. One is to load a transport (APC, lander or T-copter) with an
infantry unit and move straight towards the HQ. Drop the infantry off
and next turn start capturing. Any units in the area will go for your
transport, and any extra units built will be too late to stop you from
finishing the mission. However, it is advisable to send several
transports in for the kill, so that you increase your chances of having
a unit healthy enough to capture in two moves. Any extra wounded units
can surround the infantry in question and protect it.
The other strategy to use is "mech flood". This involves building as
many mech units as possible and sending them forward towards the enemy
HQ. Mechs can capture cities and attack large enemies at the same time,
and opponents trying to build more expensive units will be overwhelmed.
This workd every time as long as you secure all factories quickly and
there are no sea/air units.
Attributes: Infantry and mech units have 20% attack bonus and 10%
defense bonus. Direct units have 10% less power. Can capture 50% faster
than any other CO.
CO Power: Double Time. All infantry and mech units have 1 movement cost
over all terrain and can move an extra square. They also gain 30%
extra attack power, while other units gain 10%.
How to Unlock: Unlocked by default.
..........
--[Olaf]--
''''''''''
Game Description: Easily affected by the climate. Strong in snow, weak
in rain.
Description: What do you get if Santa Claus dyes his beard and changes
his clothes? OK, enough jokes, as Olaf is another pretty bad CO. He is
quite good all round and has no weaknesses, but again this makes
strategy planning difficult. Luckily there is his immensely useful
CO power. As long as he is playing alone, this will practically
immobilise an enemy force, particularly Max's or Grit's as they run
on treads and tires, which find moving very difficult in snow. Sturm,
who has a 1 movement cost over all terrain, will suddenly find himself
stuck. The snow also dramatically slows air units, so Eagle is easy
to beat with Olaf. Unfortunately rain makes Olaf's units have 1
movement cost more than everyone else, making him immobile. Because
Drake causes a lot of rain and is not affected by it I don't recommend
facing him with Olaf.
A strategy I found works well in Vs. with Olaf revolves around
preventing the enemy from getting to you. It works best in large maps
with many factories and airports. Early on, as soon as the enemy has
some A-Air/tank units, send T-copters and APCs towards him/her as
fodder. When six APCs/T-copters have been destroyed Olaf can use his
power. Use this move during which the enemy can't move far to get your
units into a strong position, or capture as many properties as you can.
Don't try this in War Room though.
Attributes: All units have no strengths or weaknesses.
CO Power: Blizzard. Causes snow, which slows other COs, and gives
a 10% bonus attack power to all units.
How to Unlock: Unlocked by default.
..........
--[Grit]--
''''''''''
Game Description: A master of distance attacks. Dislikes direct combat.
Description: Grit is a powerhouse if used correctly, but requires a lot
of resources. Artillery units are cheap and easy, but need to be
protected by Mid tanks (tanks are too weak and get destroyed by all).
Rockets and Battleships cost a lot if you have few cities. You see,
Grit relies on his long range units, the most powerful in the game, to
defeat enemies at the front line, engaged in combat with his weaker
direct units. Buying many cheap artillery is better than buying rockets
for him, but the best if you can afford it is a battleship, which
destroy one of Kanbei's Mid tanks on a city with one hit when he uses
his power. Like Max, Grit's CO power increases his long range power
dramatically, and gives them two square extra shooting distance. In
a small map nothing can escape his wrath. It's a pity that his other
units are the weakest of their kind in the game; that goes for infantry
as well as tanks.
Grit is a defender, not an attacker, which makes him useless in the
final battle. He very rarely wins by destruction (killing all enemy
units) as he finds it hard to follow up retreating enemies. I find it
best to capture the enemy HQ using a sneakily deployed infantry unit
and transport, covered by an artillery/rocket/battleship if possible.
Grit excels in Fog of War maps, as he simply has to hide his long range
units in a forest or reef and use transports as decoys to draw the
enemy into his attack range.
Attributes: Long range units have normal firepower compared to Andy but
have a longer range (1 square). His other units all suffer from a 20%
attack descrease.
CO Power: Snipe Attack. All long range units get a 65% attack bonus
and two extra squares of attack range. Other units get 10% extra
attack power.
How to Unlock: Use Max in Mission 4: Max Strikes! in campaign mode.
When you complete the current campaign he will be available to buy
from Hachi for 50 Coins. See sections 3.3 and 3.4 for details on what
paths to take to unlock Grit.
............
--[Kanbei]--
''''''''''''
Game Description: Superior overall unit strength, but expensive to
deploy.
Description: Oh boy! I think that Kanbei is the cheapest and easiest
CO to use in the game, as he requires no strategic thinking. All of
his troops have an extra 20% attack and defense, which makes for a
tough enemy to destroy in one hit, even for Max. His only drawback is
the sheer expense of his units. They all cost 20% more than usual
(so one infantry costs 1200G). As a result, you need vast resources or
a lot of money per property to succeed. Or of course you can simply
play in a pre-deployed map and crush the opponent >:).
Almost any strategy will work with Kanbei, as his troops excel in
every field. Try to capture many cities, and remember that although
it may be tempting just to build waves of tanks ALL of his units are
powerful; you could go long range too. In fact, his long range units
are more powerful than Grit's (but not with Snipe Attack).
Attributes: All units have 20% extra attack and defense. No stats
disadvantages but troops cost 20% more to deploy.
CO Power: Morale Boost. Increases attack and defense of all units
by a further 20%.
How to Unlock: Finish campaign mode, taking any path. Kanbei will then
be available to buy from Hachi for 50 Coins.
...........
--[Sonja]--
'''''''''''
Game Description: Tactician who values intel over everything. Tops in
fog of war, but is often unlucky.
Description: I pretty much never use Sonja, except in Fog of War, as
this is her speciality. She has an extra sqaure of vision, and her CO
power allows her to see a further two squares as well as in forests
and reefs. This means that she can see all concealed enemies for miles
around, and that even in Royal Channel, the largest map in the game,
she would only need 26 recons to see the whole map. She also has
the advantage of her enemies not seeing her HP (this does not work
against a computer opponent). On the down side, she is "unlucky",
meaning that she often does up to 20% less than the game says.
Planning a strategy in Fog of War is as simple as building a few
recons, placing them in strategic forest locations and sending an APC
guarded by a tank/A-Air or two. She should build many artillery and
hide them in forests, then when an enemy appears in her recons' vision
range she should take aim and fire. This requires a lot of luck. Out
of Fog of War using Sonja is a bad idea. If you must, make sure it is
against a human, so you can exploit the confusion created by the
opponents blindness concerning your HP. Create many of the same unit
and turn off battle animations so that the opponent has no which
troop has what life. Note that a computer controlled Sonja does not
suffer from her bad luck.
Attributes: All units have normal attack and defense but are "unlucky"
and will do less damage than stated. Sonja has one extra vision range.
CO Power: Enhanced Vision. Sonja can see a further two squares in Fog
of War, and can see into forests and reefs without her units having
to be right next to them. Gives all units a 10% attack bonus.
How to Unlock: Complete the three Kanbei missions in certain time
limits (more details in sections 3.3 and 3.4). When you finish that
Campaign she will be available to buy from Hachi for 60 Coins.
...........
--[Eagle]--
'''''''''''
Game Description: King of the skies. Air units are matchless, but has
weak naval units.
Description: One of the best COs in the game, and he requires very
little strategic thinking to work well. Eagle has large attack bonuses
for all his air units, and they use less fuel than others. He can
easily build an army of fighters and bombers to eradicate any
opposition in a map with many airports and cities. However, he
struggles in small maps with no air units. His sea units also have
huge attack decrease. It's alomost worthless building ports with him.
What makes Eagle so useful is his ability to smash into the enemy and
take them down quickly before they an retaliate. His air units help
with this, but what really gets the job done is his CO Power. It
allows all non-infantry/mech units to move again, allowing you to
finish off damaged units or retreat after attacking a portected unit.
The only disadvantage with this is that it makes Eagle much more
vulnerable for the next turn.
The way to win with Eagle is simply to go all-out against the enemy,
building mainly bombers and Battle copters, with Mid tanks to take out
A-Airs and missile launchers, Eagle's worst enemies. Capture all nearby
territory swiftly while killing enemy infantry with copters to prevent
them from capturing. When the enemy has little territory left charge
in and use you power to hopefully end the match in one final move.
Attributes: Compared to normal aircraft, Eagle is 15% more powerful,
and his air units consume less fuel. Fighters and bombers not ordered
to move only use up two fuel and copters use none. All air units have
10% extra defense. His navy is 20% less powerful than usual.
CO Power: Lightning Strike. All units except mech and infantry who
have already moved can move again, including newly built one. However,
they have a 20% attack decrease. They also take 30% extra damage for
the next day.
How to Unlock: Use Sami for the four Green Earth missions (see section
3.3-3.4) and when you finish campaign mode he will be available for
purchase at a price of 80 Coins.
...........
--[Drake]--
'''''''''''
Game Description: Naval units rule the seas, but has trouble with air
units. Rain seems to follow him.
Description: Drake is more or less the opposite of Eagle in that he
has strong ships and weak air units. However, he does not have Eagle's
sheer power because ships don't pack a punch like planes and his CO
Power is more annoying than effective. His ships have no offensive
bonus but have 20% extra defense and can move one square further than
other COs'. Another advantage Drake has is his ability to randomly
conjure up rain. It comes often when you play as him (although the
weather needs to be set to "random") and it doesn't affect him at all.
Drake needs to make use of his souped-up battleships to win any
major battles, as they take down units very easily. His CO Power is
in some ways useful as it damages every enemy unit by 1HP. This costs
the enemy a lot of money in healing and prevents infantry units from
capturing in two turns (unless you're fighting Sami). If the HQ is
accessible by sea send your battleships to destroy nearby units and
drop some infantry off with your far-moving lander. Capturing the HQ
will be a piece of cake with your battleships providing cover.
Attributes: His Sea units have 20% extra defense and can move 1 square
further than normal. His air units have 20% less attack power.
CO Power: Tsunami. A huge wave does one damage to all enemy units, but
will no destroy. All of Drake's units get a 10% attack bonus.
How to Unlock: Use Andy for the four Green Earth missions (see section
3.3-3.4) and when you finish campaign mode he will be available for
purchase at a price of 60 Coins.
..........
--[Nell]--
''''''''''
Game Description: Well-balanced with no weak points. Born under a lucky
star.
Description: Another "all-rounder"; bad news. No strategy works with
Nell as you can't rely on her speciality, annoyingly random good luck.
It sometimes works, doing more damage than stated, but because you
can't be sure whether it will work or not your plans can sometimes go
awry. Just build a well-balanced team, and remember to assume the worst
at all times; if it says you'll do 50% damage then assume that this
will be the case. If it does more, great, and if it doesn't, never
mind. The annoying thing about her power, which gives her enough luck
to do huge amounts of damage when only meant to do a little, is that
it can trigger the enemy CO attack when you don't want it to. The
only strategy I can give you for Nell is more of a tip; save regularly,
so that if you wanted to do more damage, or didn't want to trigger
the enemy's CO Power, you can go back a bit and try again.
Attributes: All units have normal strength, but often do more damage
than stated.
CO Power: Lucky Star. Units do much more damage than the game tells
you - sometimes up to 50% more.
How to Unlock: Unlock every other CO (including Sturm) then finish
Advance Campaign with any rank. Ignore the popular rumours about having
to complete Campaign, Advance Campaign and the War Room Maps with
S-ranks as they are false - I have Nell to prove it.
...........
--[Sturm]--
'''''''''''
Game Description: None (cannot use in War Room).
Description: El Grand Cheapo! Or at least he would be, if he was the
Campaign mode Sturm. The Sturm you buy is quite weak compared to the
one you fight, and he is not always easy to use. He has a 20% defense
bonus and all terrain only as 1 movement cost for all his units. This
means that forests that normally slow players are like roads for him.
His defense also means that a Mid tank on his own city will take four
attacks from two enemy Mid tanks to bring down, even if he doesn't
attack back. His power is nowhere near as strong as Campaign Sturm's,
as it only does 4HP worth of damage and hurts his own troops. Sturm
can also only be used in Link and Vs. Modes - not War Room. In this
sense he is unique.
Planning a strategy with Sturm is simple. He does not attack well
(-20% attack) so just avoid enemies and block up entry routes at
choke points with Mid tanks, covered by artillery. Then use your
superior speed to run across any forest shortcuts to the enemy HQ.
Your CO Power automatically targets the highest concentration of
enemies, so make sure that they are far away when you use it to avoid
damaging your own units.
Attributes: (Vs. Sturm) All units have +20% defense and -20% attack.
They have 1 movement cost over all terrain they're allowed to cross
except in snow.
(Campaign Sturm) All units have +20% attack and -20% defense. Same
thing as Vs. Sturm for movement.
CO Power: Meteor Strike. (Vs. Sturm) A meteor hits a 5x5 area and does
4HP worth of damage to all units in its range. Will not kill. Gives 10%
attack bonus.
(Campaign Sturm) A meteor hits a 5x5 area and does 8HP worth of
damage to all units in its range. Will not kill. Unkown whether an
attack bonus is given or not.
How to Unlock: Unlock every other CO except Nell, then purchase from
Hachi for 100 Coins.
_______________
/3.2 Battle Maps\
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Here is the complete list of everything you can purchase from Hachi
at Battle Maps. I have included all the intel you are given about each
map when you start a Vs. battle in one (the number of cities, airports
and factories). I have also included map cases and COs, with prices,
as you may want to know how much money to save up. As a side note,
special maps Shark Strait and Royal Channel cost 100 Coins as they are
huge.

--[Map Cases]--
'''''''''''''''
There are two Map Cases in the game: Special and Vs. Existing map
types when you start off are Pre-deployed, 3P, 4P and War Room. The
extra map cases are definitely worth buying, as the special maps in
particular are better designed than the others. They retail at a price
of 100 Coins (Special) and 50 Coins (Vs.). Since you start off with
plenty of maps to play in, I wouldn't worry too much about purchasing
these. I only did this after playing Advance Campaign a few times,
since you get double the coins when playing there. I think I also ought
to include here that you can purchase Advance Campaign for 1 Coin from
Hachi after finishing Campaign mode with any rank.

/3.3 Secret Missions\
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
There are several paths you can choose to take in the Campaign mode,
which will affect both your team in The Final Battle and who you
unlock. Path 1 is obligatory; you have to take 1a or 1b, which result
in different missions but take you to the same place. Paths 2 and 3
however do not have to be taken; it all depends on what you do in
previous missions. Path 3 is just one mission, Rivals! It would not
normally occur, but is a hidden mission. This is the list of hidden
missions, which you do not have to do (not including missions where
there is an alternative mission):
Olaf's Sea Strike
Divide and Conquer
Sami Marches On!
Sonja's Goal
Rivals!
Please note that the object of this section is not to provide a
walkthrough for these missions (other FAQs do that); it is merely to
describe the secret missions to you, so you can decide whether to take
them on or not.
............
--[Path 1]--
''''''''''''
Path 1 is split into two possibilities, which I have labelled 1a and
1b. In order to take path 1a use Andy on mission 4: Max Strikes! You
will get Grit in The Final Battle! and he will be unlocked after the
campaign is over.
1a: Max Strikes!
================
With Andy Olaf has a large force to the East, headed your way via
a bridge to the north. He also has a small navy. You have a smaller
force but some bases. The easiest way to do the map is to use APCs
to bait his navy, create a diversion with your troops up north and
send your lander across to his HQ, loaded with an infantry and a tank.
1a: Max's Folly?
================
Grit has ambushed you, and in this mission your objective is to
survive five days with limited troops and your HQ the other side of
the map. I just baited Grit's long range units and sent a couple of
tanks down the road to kill the infantry who tries to capture your
base for a perfect S-rank.
1a: Olaf's Navy
===============
Another easy mission as long as you are simply trying to get past it.
You have to send your land forces up north to capture Olaf's HQ
while letting you navy get wasted.
HOWEVER, if you wish to unlock the TRUE secret mission of Advance Wars
you will have to use all of your tactical skill to defeat all of Olaf's
units, including his navy. Make use of forests and reefs, and use your
long-range land units to help defeat the navy, as your ships cannot
survive alone. If you rout Olaf he will be very upset and the hidden
level of the game will appear.
1a: Olaf's Sea Strike
=====================
Olaf, angry at his defeat, wants another naval battle. This time it's
quite hard, and you have to use all your units as bait to get your key
transport and infantry to capture the enemy HQ.
In order to take Path 1b you must choose Max for Max Strikes! You will
get Max in The Final Battle!, but Grit won't be unlocked.
1b: Max Strikes!
================
This is even easier as Max, and you simply have to tear into the enemy
with your troops. Max's +50% offensive bonus makes mincemeat of Olaf's
troops, and it is much easier to win by rout, rather than by capture.
1b: Sniper!
===========
You face Grit again, and Andy is your best bet. I find this a very fun
mission to replay when going for a S-rank. You can try to dodge Grit's
long range units, but in Fog of War this is not easy, and there are
many hidden ambushes waiting for your HQ-capturing infantry.
1b: Blizzard Battle
===================
This is the first "property race" in tha game, and your primary
objective is to capture 15 bases. I recommend building APCs to block up
the bridges, using Andy, and sending your Infantry to capture every
city on your side of the river plus the one on the other side of the
lower bridge.
1b: History Lesson
==================
You have to use Max for this one, and it's very hard to pull off a
good rank. Grit has loads of hidden units near where you start, and you
have to uncover and destroy them quickly to avoid being blasted to
smithereens and getting a low technique score.
............
--[Path 2]--
''''''''''''
This path is not obligatory, and there are no alternative paths; you
either do this or you don't. All three missions in Path 2 are against
Sonja, and to access them you must finish Kanbei Arrives! in less than
8 days, Mighty Kanbei! in less than 10 days and Kanbei's Error? in less
than 12 days. The rank you get is irrelevant, contrary to what popular
rumours have suggested. Doing the Sonja missions will unlock Kanbei in
The Final Battle!, unless you override him by completing the criteria
for Eagle.
2: Divide and Conquer
=====================
As with the other two Sonja missions, this Max level is Fog of War. It
is, however, ridiculously easy. I found following the road Northeast
and hiding your units in forests where possible the best solution, then
capturing the enemy's HQ.
2: Sami Marches On!
===================
This has some funny dialogue at the beginning, and is another property
race. You have units on a Nortwest island and have to build more to
capture fifteen cities on the middle northern and southern islands.
2: Sonja's Goal
===============
The hardest of the Sonja missions, Andy must move his outnumbered
troops from his HQ to the south through treacherous land and sea
terrain to Sonja's Headquarters to the North.
............
--[Path 3]--
''''''''''''
The four Green Earth missions offer the most choice in terms of
secrets. Using Andy or Sami for all four will get you different
outcomes, as will using Max or a mixture of all three. Using Sami
unlocks Eagle for The Final Battle!, as well as Rivals! On the other
hand, Andy unlocks Drake. Max/mixture unlocks Sami, unless you got
Kanbei by doing the Sonja missions. Andy missions have 3a, Max missions
3b and Sami missions 3c - you get a different level for each CO.
3a: Captain Drake
=================
This very easy mission pits you against Drake in a race to capture as
many properties as you can. He is in the Southeast corner, you are in
the Northwest. You need to capture the middle island cities and save
your CO Power for use after his, to cancel out its effects.
3a: Naval Clash!
================
Things don't get much easier; you simply have to make a missile
launcher surivive ten days. Your HQ is in the middle of the map, and
you have to move the launcher to the northern shores using a lander and
reef cover. You then simply have to move it into a forest and wait ten
days. If you're going for a good technique score it's slightly harder,
but still possible.
3a: Wings of Victory!
=====================
This time against Eagle, Andy has few air units compared to his
opponent and must somehow navigate a transport copter and a fighter
from the west HQ to Eagle's in the east. I found S-ranking this very
difficult, and don't recommend you try until you've played for a long
time. Victory with any rank, on the other hand, is something even a
beginner can achieve.
3a: Battle Mystery!
===================
Instead of protecting a unit, Andy has to destroy one in this mission.
In the small central-eastern pool is a cruiser vital to Drake's
strategy which is easy enough to destroy, but well guarded. I unloaded
a Mid Tank on the central land strip and moved it east to destroy any
long range units that threaten your navy. The navy can then stomp in
and, using landers as battleship decoys, destroy the troublesome unit.
Using Max for all four missions will get you Sami in TFB!, so if you
want her or Kanbei you should play his version of the Green Earth
missions.
3b: Captain Drake
=================
As easy as Andy's first mission, Max is supplied with a navy to rival
Drake's, and simply needs to push southward, routing the enemy units,
and concentrating on his worst enemy: the battleship.
3b: Naval Clash!
================
Max has a very hard time in his second Green Earth mission. He must
defeat Drake's forces in fifteen days, and Drake plays on the defensive
here. As promised, I won't be writing a walkthrough (phew!) but I'll
remind you that using a mixture of COs produces the same result as
using Max, so you may want to use someone else here.
3b: Wings of Victory!
=====================
As in Captain Drake, you have a superior force to Eagle and you simply
have to flatten him quickly and with few casualties to get a high rank.
Your troops are massed to the west and his to the east. Much more fun
to play than Andy or Sami's version.
3b: Battle Mystery!
===================
Another rough ride here, this time with Drake owning a massive force
to the north which delivers a crushing blow to your southern troops.
The only option I had was to capture the enemy's HQ, ensuring that I
triggered his CO Power when my designated infantry was in a lander.
Finally, you need to use Sami for all four missions if you want Eagle
in TFB!, Rivals! and Eagle as an unlockable character. You're in for a
rough ride though, as Sami's missions are the hardest. The final
mission in this path is Rivals!, which only Andy can play.
3c: Captain Drake
=================
This is a Fog of War Capture mission, which would normally work to
Sami's advantage. However, you are hampered by the ever-annoying
Tsunami, which makes capturing harder. While Sami can still capture in
two moves with a unit on 9HP, the on hit point can make the difference
between your infantry dying unsuccessful or capturing a city before the
enemy arrives. A real toughie to score highly in, Drake has control of
a long thin peninsula which he swiftly swarms over. This is where all
the property is. See the problem? I think there's a way of capturing
his HQ, and if you were to discover this it would seriously increase
your chances here.
3c: Naval Clash!
================
This is a protection mission in that you have some units to the south
of Drake's landmass, two of which (the landers) cannot be destroyed.
However, unlike Andy, who has to stay alive for a certain time limit,
you also have to complete the mission. I just unloaded my tanks and
infantry on the south peninsula and forest-hopped to the HQ. The sea
battle is irrelevant unless you want a high power score to get S-rank.
3c: Wings of Victory!
=====================
Sami has a very similar mission to Andy, only she has less units and
Eagle has more. The map is virtually identical: Eagle is northeast and
you are southwest. You also need to follow the same strategy of sending
an infantry to his HQ, but you have the bonus of the unit being allowed
some damage and still being able to capture in two moves. You will need
to be more intelligent in terms of other units than you would have done
with Andy.
3c: Battle Mystery!
===================
This mission is pretty easy, which makes a nice change. You have to
rescue an infantry unit from near Drake's troops and survive another
ten days. You have an army to the southwest, but, more importantly,
some transport copters to carry the infantry unit away. Just beware the
large force of tanks and A-Airs Drake has to try to scupper your escape
plan.
3c: Rivals!
===========
This is, in my opinion, the hardest mission in the game. Yes, harder
even than The Final Battle!, in its own way. You are Andy, and you have
a tiny force and have to build a copter and an escort of fighters to
take your infantry to the opponent's HQ and capture it. This is made
very hard by the fact that he has a large initial force and keeps
building fighters.
Incidentally, this mission took me longest of all on Advance Campaign.
It's Fog of War, Eagle has even more troops and you have two mechs and
an infantry. It took me 24 hours of combined gameplay experimenting
with moving my chopper and two fighters to finally capture his HQ, but
the reward was worth it: an S-rank for the mission, an overall Advance
Campaign S-rank (942 points) and of course Nell.

/3.4 Final Battle Combinations\
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
The Final Battle! is full of secrets which must be unlocked earlier in
the game (and are detailed in section 3.3). The purpose of this chapter
is to explain in full detail how to obtain each CO and how to use
him/her, and finally what your reward is depending upon each
combination. Remember that you can only have three COs each time you
play the battle.
..........
--[Andy]--
''''''''''
The one Commanding Officer you could really do without is the one
obligatory one. Whatever happens in the game, you will always end up
with Andy in the middle of the two mountain ranges. Andy always gets
beat up, as Sturms' troops will go straight for him. Your main
objective is to hold out for long enough until your right character can
send reinforcements. It's best to defeat what you can then continuously
build APCs, as they can take two Mid tank shots and will draw enemy
fire away from Andy's more useful people. Try to capture the airport
and base by the time Sturm arrives.
.........
--[Max]--
'''''''''
In my opinion Max is the best CO to have on the left, unless you
prefer Olaf. His +50% attack bonus against Sturm's -20% defense bonus
means 70% attack rating! He has a decent tank initial tank force and
four A-Airs to boot. To unlock him, you must use Andy in Max Strikes!
..........
--[Sami]--
''''''''''
If you get Sami she will appear on your right. Her troops are
obviously infantry-based, but she gets some tanks and the essential
A-Airs that you need to take out Sturm's air force. Use her infantry,
a unit the enemy can't resist killing, to lure Sturm's troops into
attack range then use the immensely effective mech flood. Build mechs
on all your bases and send them left to attack Sturm's invasion force.
Mechs can capture as well as attack, so you should recapture lost
cities and destroy tanks and A-Airs with ease. The one unit Sami
struggles on is the Mid tank - you'll need four healthy mechs to take
one out. Fortunately, Sturm has only three in his initial force and
doesn't build many more. To get Sami use Max/a mixture of all three
COs in the four Green Earth missions (see 3.3).
..........
--[Olaf]--
''''''''''
As Olaf is well rounded, he can send both tanks and artillery to
assist Andy from the north. He can also make a great bait for the first
meteor strike; 3x3 square of two missiles and three APCs (nothing in
the middle). Later add your rockets and new APCs to the pile and you'll
divert it again. Olaf's CO power is very useful in that it is the only
thing that can stop Sturm's 1 movement cost over all terrain. Use it
when your allies do not need to move to far that particular move and
have long range units ready to blast Sturm. To get Olaf you must use
Andy in Max Strikes! and defeat all of his units in Olaf's Navy, which
unlocks the secret mission Olaf's Sea Strike and allows Olaf to help
you in The Final Battle!
..........
--[Grit]--
''''''''''
The worst team mate to have on the left is Grit. Although he can
provide cover for Andy's troops across the mountains, he needs more
resources and is useless in the final onslaught against Sturm's base.
He is best used for diverting meteor strike with his expensive long
range units, with APCs. Another tactic I found quite useful with Grit
is to send a constant stream of A-Airs round the bottom of the left
mountain range to help Andy from behind. To get Grit, use Max in Max
Strikes!
............
--[Kanbei]--
''''''''''''
Kanbei's troops have excellent defense and attack, so his souped-up
units make quick work of Sturm. He is best paired with Max, as between
them they can mash Sturm up from both sides. His initial force is
large, but will have to last you a while, since with limited resources
Kanbei cannot build many units. Make sure his infantry capture all the
bases at the top of his strip. Also make sure meteor strike does not
land on his troops, as they are too expensive to waste. To get Kanbei
you must finish his three missions in 8, 10 and 12 days respectively
and complete the Sonja missions.
...........
--[Eagle]--
'''''''''''
Eagle is by far the best ally to have, if only because his initial
force conatains aircraft, meaning he can take out Sturm's dangerous air
force much more easily than anyone else could. He is on the right, and
gets some Mid tanks to help. Anyone can work out a strategy with him,
and in the latter stages of the battle his CO power really helps speed
up Sturm's defeat. He can also send his bombers to destroy any units
Sturm hides in a bid to prolong the battle. To get Eagle you should use
Sami for the four Green Earth missions, but bear in mind that you will
have to complete Rivals! after TFB!
...........
--[Drake]--
'''''''''''
I've heard others say that Drake is a great asset in TFB!, but I find
him to be the worst CO to have on the right. His troops have normal
attack power, but his CO power does no real damage, and serves only to
waste Sturm's money (in repairs). To be fair, it can also slow
infantry, but it isn't in the same league as Lightning Strike! or
Morale Boost! It should also be noted that Drake doesn't bring his
ally, rain to this battle. He really can do nothing out of the ordinary
other than send wave after wave of Mid tanks (assuming he has the money
to do so) to assist Andy. He can also not make use of the airport north
of his HQ, as building -20% planes is a waste of money. To get Drake
use Andy in the four Green Earth missions.
.............

====================
The following deserve a mention:
-GameFAQs.com, for being home to the best FAQing community on the web, and
hosting this FAQ. Also, I found a link to the sites mentioned below at
GameFAQs, so it gets credit for that too.
-Gameshark.com, as it's from there that I got the gameshark codes found above.
-cmgsccc.com, as I got a load of Code Breaker GBA codes from there.
-codejunkies.com, for they had Action Replay codes I used in this FAQ.
-Nintendo/Intelligent Systems, for making the best portable strategy game ever.
-Myself, for persevering with my FAQ writing to create (what I like to think of
as) useful guides for the gaming community.
