TIMELINE[0002]
Considered to be the second-to-last game in the series, right
behind its sequel Adventure of Link. This is the most popular presumption.
STORYLINE[0003]
A long, long time ago the World was in an age of Chaos. In the
middle of this chaos, in a little kingdom in the land of Hyrule, a legend
was being handed down from generation to generation, the legend of the
"Triforce"; golden triangles possessing mystical powers.
One day, an evil army attacked this peaceful little kingdom and stole
the Triforce of Power. This army was led by Ganon, the powerful Prince of
Darkness who sought to plunge the World into fear and darkness under his rule.
Fearing his wicked rule, Zelda, the princess of this kingdom, split up the
Triforce of Wisdom into eight fragments and hid them throughout the realm to
save the last remaining Triforce from the clutches of the evil Ganon. At the
same time, she commanded her most trustworthy nursemaid, Impa, to secretly
escape into the land and go find a man with enough courage to destroy the evil
Ganon. Upon hearing this, Ganon grew angry, imprisoned the princess, and sent
out a party in search of Impa.
Braving forests and mountains, Impa fled for her life from her pursuers.
As she reached the very limit of her energy she found herself surrounded by
Ganon's evil henchmen. Cornered! What could she do? ... But wait!
All was not lost. A young lad appeared. He skillfully drove off
Ganon's henchmen, and saved Impa from a fate worse than death. His name was
Link. During his travels he had come across Impa and Ganon's henchmen. Impa
told Link the whole story of the princess Zelda and the evil Ganon. Burning
with a sense of justice, Link resolved to save Zelda, but Ganon was a
powerful opponent. He held the Triforce of Power. And so, in order to fight
off Ganon, Link had to bring the scattered eight fragments of the Triforce of
Wisdom together to rebuild the mystical Triangle.
If he couldn't do this, there would be no chance Link could fight his
way into Death Mountain where Ganon lived. Can Link really destroy Ganon and
save the Princess Zelda? Only your skill can answer that question. Good
luck. Use the Triforce wisely.
COMMENTS[0004]
The checklist for this game is a bit different from the others
because of the way the map is designed. There is no given name for each area,
because the map consists of only general forest and mountain areas. Thus I
will only specify the exact x and y grid locations of each item. The top-left
corner of the map is (1-1) and the bottom-right corner of the map is (16-8),
and you begin the game at grid (8-8). I give the x-y locations next to every
item and dungeon. This is also the only game where I consider hidden areas
with rupees part of the 100% quest; I will include every area where there is
a secret passage that leads to a rupee gift. Hidden rooms with gambling,
teleportations, or people that take away your money are not mentioned.
Doing a 100% playthrough in the original LoZ is extremely tedious,
because you pretty much have to test every square of the terrain for hidden
passages. Thankfully, you have a limited number of items to work with. The
Candle is the only item that ever has any effect on trees, and the Bombs are
the only items that ever have any effect on stones. Once you get the Red
Candle, it's much easier to test for secret areas in bushes.
Interestingly, most of the hidden rooms are accessible as soon as you
start on both quests, so if you want you can find all of them before stepping
foot into the first dungeon. You will be doing a lot of purchasing in this
game, especially for Potions in the second quest, and though the secret rupee
rooms help, they're not quite enough to get you through the whole game. So if
you want to get rupees the cheapest way possible, there's a secret room in the
square directly west of where you start where you can gamble and get quick
rupees. Use the restart option in the start menu if you lose too many at
once.
There are a few dungeons where you must come prepared in addition to
whatever Potions you choose to bring. In the seventh dungeon of the first
quest and the eighth dungeon of the second quest, come with Bait to give to
the "Grumble Grumble" monster. In the fifth and seventh dungeons of the first
quest and the fourth and eighth dungeons of the second quest, come with at
least 100 rupees to get the Bomb Capacity Increases. Also, many of the
dungeons are hidden, unlike in future Zelda games. In those cases you must
use an item to reveal their hidden locations.

all of the available secret rupee rooms!
1. "The Eagle" Dungeon (8-4) [0102]
Get Bow
Get Boomerang
Defeat Aquamentus
Get Triforce Piece #1 and Heart
Dungeon notes: This dungeon is easy to enter once you know where it is. It is
also the simplest. The only enemies that are really a threat are the Wall
Masters, who can catch you and transport you back to the beginning of a
dungeon. You acquire the Boomerang in this dungeon; you will not be using it
much in the game, however, since its only function is to stun enemies. The
Bow is only necessary once you reach the fifth dungeon. If you have picked up
the White Sword, the Aquamentus boss is pathetically easy.
To the compass:
- Go right and get the key.
- Go left twice and get the key.
- Go right once and go north through the locked door.
- Go right to get the Compass.
To the map:
- Go left once and bomb north to get the map.
To the secret item:
- Go north once and get the key.
- Go north once and get another key.
- Go left, push the block to reveal the stairs, and go through.
- Get the Bow from the underground room.
To the boss:- Go back to the map room and go right through the locked door.
- Get the Boomerang from the enemies.
- Go right and get the key.
- Go north through the locked door to the boss.
2. "The Moon" Dungeon (13-4) [0103]
Get Magic Boomerang
Defeat Dodongo
Get Triforce Piece #2 and Heart
Dungeon notes: If for some reason you do not like getting rupees from the
gambling games or the secret rupee rooms, you can get a tidy sum by beating the
snakes in this dungeon over and over again. There is a long series of bombable
walls on the right side of this dungeon that leads to the Magic Boomerang.
Also remember: Stone slab doors are almost always opened by killing all the
enemies in the room. To kill the single Dodongo boss, place a bomb in its
mouth.
To the compass:
- Go north once.
- Go left once and get the key.
- Go right through two rooms.
- Go south and get the key.
- Go north and through the locked door to the right to get the compass.
To the map:
- Bomb the north wall and go through to get the map.
To the secret item:
- Bomb the north wall and go through.
- Get the Magic Boomerang from the enemies.
To the boss:
- Go left and get the key.
- Go north once and get the key.
- Go north twice and kill the enemies to get to the boss.
3. "The Manji" Dungeon (5-8) [0104]
Get Raft
Defeat Manhandla
Get Triforce Piece #3 and Heart
Dungeon notes: This dungeon is oddly shaped like a swastika; the map is not
available until very late in the dungeon, but its layout is straightforward.
The Raft item is only used a couple of times in the game, for use in fording
across rivers from docking places. The knights can be difficult to kill,
because they are heavily armored- you must be able to move quickly to hit them
from the sides. The Manhandla is easily defeatable with bombs.
To the compass:
- Go left and get the key.
- Go north once and get the key.
- Go north once, then left once.
- Get the compass from the enemies.
To the secret item:
- Go through the locked door to the left.
- Go south and down the staircase.
- Get the Raft from the underground room.
To the map:
- Go north twice and get the key.
- Go right once and get the key.
- Go through the locked door to the right.
- Go through the locked door to the north.
- Go north twice, then left to get the key.
- Go right once and south twice.
- Go through the locked door to the right to get the map.
To the boss:
- Bomb the wall to the right and go through to get to the boss.
Before Dungeon 4 [0105]
New Items:
1 Heart Piece (#4)
- Get Heart #4 (16-3)
From the screen below, use the Raft to go from the small dock to the shore on
the other side. Pick up the heart from inside.
4. "The Snake" Dungeon (6-5) [0106]
Get Stepladder
Defeat Gleeok
Get Triforce Piece #4 and Heart
Dungeon notes: To access the fourth dungeon, you must raft to it from the
screen below. In this room you will start to come across annoying dark rooms.
You can light them up a little bit with your candle. The monsters are not very
difficult, but now Like-Likes start to appear. These monsters can eat your
shield, forcing you to have to buy a new one if you cannot escape from one in
time. The Stepladder is one of the most useful items in the game, because it
creates shortcuts across all the tiny rivers that litter the dungeons and
overworld. Standard sword-cutting takes care of the Gleeok.
To the compass:
- Go left and get the key.
- Go right and then north once.
- Go through the locked door to the right.
- Light the candle to get the compass.
To the secret item:
- Go left and north once to get a key.
- Go left and north again to get a key.
- Go north once, then through the locked door to the right.
- Go right and get the Stepladder.
To the map:
- Go left twice.
- Use the Stepladder to go north through the locked door.
- Go right and get the map.
To the boss:
- Bomb the north wall and go through.
- Bomb the north wall and go north to get a key.
- Go back south, bomb right and go through.
- Push the block and go right to get to the boss.
Before Dungeon 5 [0107]
New Items:
Magic Sword
Bracelet
1 Heart Piece (#5)
- Get Heart #5 (16-6)
Just use the Stepladder to step across to the heart over here.
- Get Magic Sword (2-3)
To get here you will have to go through the Lost Forest: The path is up, left,
down, and left. Push one of the gravestones in the middle row to access the
room with the Magic Sword, the most powerful sword in the game!
- Get Bracelet (5-3)
Touch the top-right statue to unlock the staircase to this item.
5. "The Lizard" Dungeon (12-1) [0108]
Get Flute
Purchase Bomb Capacity Increase #1 (100 rupees)
Defeat Digdogger
Get Triforce Piece #5 and Heart
Dungeon notes: Before entering this dungeon, be sure that you have the bow and
arrows, as well as 100 rupees for the Bomb Capacity Increase. The map is in
the room three rooms north of the entrance. The Flute is the item of interest
here: It canboth teleport you to several different locations on the world map
and reveal caves hidden under sand or lakes. The Bow is used to kill the
Pol's Voices (the rabbits) easily. Like the stone slabs, the stone blocks
that open up secret passages usually do not open up until all the enemies in
the room are defeated. To defeat the boss, use the Flute first to knock it
down to small size.
To the map:
- Go right and get the key.
- Go back left and go north once.
- Light the candle and get the key, then go north once.
- Kill the Dodongos and go left.
- Go north once and get the map.
To the secret item:
- Go back south, go left and get the key.
- Go south once, bomb the left wall and go through.
- Push the block and go through the secret passage.
- Go through the locked door to the left.
- Push the block and get the Flute from the underground room.
To the compass:
- Go back right and through the locked door to the south.
- Get the key, bomb the right wall and go through.
- Get the Bomb Capacity Increase.
- Go back left, up and back through the passage.
- Go right, bomb the right wall and go through.
- Go north once, then right once.
- Go north once and get the key.
- Go north once and get the compass.
To the boss:
- Go north once and get the key.
- Go left through the locked door.
- Get the key and go left twice through another locked door to get to the boss.
6. "The Dragon" Dungeon (3-3) [0109]
Get Magic Wand
Defeat Gohma
Get Triforce Piece #6 and Heart
Dungeon notes: At this point the dungeons rack up in intensity. If you've
been using your keys wisely, you probably have several left over. If your
supply is dwindling, don't waste your keys on doors that lead to unimportant
rooms! The Wizzrobes are the most annoying enemies in the game; if you're
having problems, kill all but one, and the room will respawn with only that
one enemy and not a whole lot more. The Magic Wand is an interesting weapon,
but vastly inferior to the Magic Sword. Fortunately, the boss Gohma is
defeated with a single Arrow shot.
To the compass:
- Go right and get the key.
- Go left twice through a locked door.
- Go north once and get the compass.
To the map:
- Go north once and get the key.
- Go north three times.
- Bomb the right wall and go through.
- Get the key and go north through the locked door.
- Get the map from the enemies.
To the secret item:
- Go north through the locked door.
- Push the block and get the Magic Wand from the underground room.
To the boss:
- Go back south, and go right.
- Get the key, then go back left.
- Go south twice, then go right.
- Push the block and go through the secret passage.
- Go south and get the key.
- Go left and go through the locked door to the north to get to the boss.
7. "The Demon" Dungeon (3-5) [0110]
Purchase Bomb Capacity Increase #2 (100 rupees)
Get Red Candle
Defeat Aquamentus II
Get Triforce Piece #7 and Heart
Dungeon notes: To access this dungeon, use the Flute at the lake on this
screen. The Bait is necessary in this dungeon to get past the 'Grumble
grumble' monster, and you must have 100 rupees to get the second Bomb
Capacity Increase. This is an involved dungeon with many bombable walls; the
map is near the top-left corner. Fortunately, the enemies are not so
demanding this time. The Red Candle makes searching for burnable secrets a
lot easier if you haven't found
them all already, since it can be used an unlimited amount of times per
screen. The Aquamentus is the same boss from the first dungeon.
To the compass:
- Go right, then go north once.
- Go right three times and get the key.
- Go left four times, bomb through the left wall and go through.
- Go south and get the key.
- Go north three times through a locked door.
- Get the Bomb Capacity Increase.
- Go south once, then right twice to get the compass.
To the map:
- Go back left, then go up twice.
- Bomb the right wall and go through.
- Get the key, then go left twice.
- Go north through the locked door.
- Use the Bait to get past the 'Grumble grumble' monster.
- Go north and get the map.
To the secret item:
- Bomb the north wall and go through.
- Bomb the right wall and go through.
- Go right and get the key.
- Go back left, then go south.
- Bomb the right wall and go through.
- Push the block and get the Red Candle from the underground room.
To the boss:
- Bomb the right wall and go through.
- Go right through the locked door.
- Kill the Digdogger and go north.
- Bomb the right wall and go through.
- Push the block and go through the secret passage.
- Bomb through the right wall to get to the boss.
8. "The Lion" Dungeon (14-7) [0111]
Get Magic Book
Get Magic Key
Defeat Gleeok II
Get Triforce Piece #8 and Heart
Dungeon notes: To get to the eighth dungeon, burn the middle bush in the screen
with your Red Candle. In this dungeon, you get the Master Key, which opens all
the dungeon doors in Hyrule- no more need for collecting. At this point, you
should be powerful enough to handle most of the enemies in your way without a
problem. This dungeon is more of the same from before, only the Gleeok now has
more heads.
To the compass:
- Go right and get the key.
- Go left three times.
- Push the block and get the Magic Book from the underground room.
- Go right twice, then go up.
- Bomb the north wall and go through.
- Get the key and go right.
- Get the compass from the enemies.
To the map:
- Go left twice and get the key.
- Go left once and get the key.
- Go right twice, then go north.
- Go north through the locked door.
- Bomb the north wall and go through to get the map.
To the secret item:
- Bomb the left wall and go through.
- Go north through the locked door.
- Kill the Gohma and go right.
- Push the block and get the Magic Key from the underground room.
To the boss:
- Go back left, south, right, then south.
- Go through the secret passage.
- Bomb through the north wall to get to the boss.
9. Death Mountain (6-1) [0112]
Get Red Ring
Get Silver Arrows
Defeat Ganon
Get Ganon's Triforce
Dungeon notes: The final dungeon in the first quest is by far the largest and
most arduous to get through. To enter, you must have beaten the other eight
dungeons; to reach the entrance itself, bomb the corner of the left slab of
rock. A Red Potion is recommended to heal your wounds. There are six
underground passages that all lead to different sectors of the huge dungeon,
so it's extremely easy to get lost. The dungeon is infested with boss
creatures from previous dungeons, Wizzrobes, and floating red skulls that take
away your sword temporarily. When you get the Red Ring, your defense again
doubles from what it was! To defeat Ganon, the final boss, you must also
obtain the Silver Arrows- those are the only weapons that can damage him.
When you reach his final lair, expose him with your sword and hit him with the
Silver Arrows until he is destroyed.
To the compass:
- Go north twice.
- Bomb the left wall and go through.
- Push the block and go through the secret passage.
- Go through the locked door to the right.
- Bomb south through two rooms.
- Get the compass from the enemies.
To the map:
- Go north twice, then go right.
- Go south, bomb through the right wall and go through.
- Kill the Patra and get the map.
To the secret item:
- Bomb north through two rooms.
- Push the block and get the Red Ring from the underground room.
- Go back south twice, left, then north.
- Go through the locked door to the north.
- Bomb the left wall and go through.
- Push the block and go through the secret passage.
- Go through the locked door to the left.
- Go left, push the stone, and go through the secret passage.
- Bomb the north wall and go through.
- Push the block and get the Silver Arrows from the underground room.
To the boss:
- Go back south and through the secret passage.
- Go north three times.
- Bomb the left wall and go through.
- Push the block and go through the secret passage.
- Bomb the left wall and go through.
- Push the block and go through the secret passage.
- Go north to get to Ganon.

As before, make sure you have enough money to purchase bombs as soon as

- Get 30 rupees (9-4)

- Get 10 rupees (15-6)

- Purchase Blue Ring (250 rupees) (16-1)
To get to the shop in the top-right corner of the overworld, you will have to
go through an invisible path through the rock wall of the screen below. The
Blue Ring's defense-bolstering effects are especially necessary in the more
difficult second-quest dungeons.
- Purchase Bait (60 rupees) (16-1)
You can also purchase bait here, since you will need it in the third and
eighth dungeons.

Burn the southwest bush.
- Purchase Arrows (80 rupees) (6-3)
As usual, the arrows are available way before you need them. You don't get
the Bow until the fifth dungeon, but you'd better make sure you have arrows by
then.
1. "E" Dungeon (8-4) [0202]
Get Boomerang
Defeat Aquamentus
Get Triforce Piece #1 and Heart
Dungeon notes: You are stuck with the Wooden Sword for now, so the first
dungeon here may be more difficult than the first dungeon of the first quest.
The map layouts in this quest are a bit more straightforward since the first
five are based off of the letters Z-E-L-D-A. The Boomerang is the first
special dungeon item, but it doesn't find much use here. In the second quest,
you will face a lot of the invincible floating skulls- the red ones steal your
sword, and the blue ones give it back. Avoid them whenever you see them! The
Aquamentus is the same boss you've faced before, only now you have to fight
him as a weakling.
To the secret item:
- Go right and get the Boomerang.
To the compass:
- Go back left, then go north.
- Get the key, and go north.
- Get the compass from the enemies.
To the map:
- Go north twice.
- Go right through the locked door.
- Kill the Dodongo, go south and get the map.
To the boss:
- Go back north, then go left.
- Go south three times.
- Bomb the right wall and go through.
- Push the block and go through the secret passage.
- Get the key and go through the locked door to the left.
- Bomb the north wall to get to the boss.
Before Dungeon 2 [0203]
New Items:
White Sword
- Get White Sword (11-1)
This is the same place you got the White Sword as in the first quest, and now
you have enough hearts to get it.
2. "A" Dungeon (5-4) [0204]
Get Flute
Defeat Gleeok
Get Triforce Piece #2 and Heart
Dungeon notes: The second dungeon is hidden under the top-middle statue. The
dungeons have already begun to get more complicated! You now have to deal with
facade walls- some go both ways, but some you can only go through one way.
Getting lost is now much easier to do than before. You get the Flute early on
in the second quest, and it is necessary to get a couple of heart pieces after
the dungeon. Note: You must waste a key to get the map, so decide if it is
really necessary beforehand. Defeat the Gleeok with the standard White Sword
barrage.
To the compass:

To get to the entrance, play the Flute at the screen to dry up lake. You must
have purchased the Bait beforehand to give to the 'Grumble grumble' monster,
and you must have at least one extra key! You should have leftover keys from
previous dungeons, otherwise you'll have to purchase one. The boss is in a
different sector from the Triforce piece, strangely, and you'll defeat it
early on.

Dungeon notes: This is the most difficult dungeon you've faced so far, filled
with more tricky one-way facade walls and men that steal your money. Its
entrance is hidden under the far right stone on the formation on the screen.
Come with at least 150 rupees- 100 to get the Bomb Capacity Increase and 50 to
pay the old man. At one point, you can get permanently stuck if you don't have
the key to go forth. As usual, watch out for the difficult-to-kill Darknuts
(the knights) and the floating skulls that steal your sword. In this dungeon,
you'll face the boss before getting the secret item, the Raft, and you'll
actually have to go past the room with the Triforce before collecting it.

below to float across.
5. "Z" Dungeon (6-5) [0209]
Get Bow
Defeat Gleeok II
Get Triforce Piece #5 and Heart
Dungeon notes: You will finally get the Bow in this dungeon, so have those
arrows bought before entering. The entrance can be reached by using the Raft
from the screen below. You get to meet your old enemies, the Wizzrobes, again,
and without the Magic Sword. The next couple of dungeons are more
straightforward than the last one, thankfully. The Gleeok is back yet again,
but you should be strong enough to deal with it by now. As a note, there have
been a couple rooms that have been impossible to reach because they require the
Stepladder, which you don't have yet. You can come back for these later,
though it's not necessary.

You can finally get the Magic Sword now, so go all the way up to the mountain
tops, and push the left stone in the rock formation to reveal the staircase.
Once again, you have the most powerful sword in the game!
6. "Link's Hat" Dungeon (1-4) [0211]
Get Stepladder
Defeat Gohma
Get Triforce Piece #6 and Heart
Dungeon notes: In the graveyard area, play the Flute and one of the graves
will open up to reveal the entrance to the sixth dungeon. As in the previous
dungeon, there are no trap rooms to worry about; also, you get the very useful

last heart.
7. "Spiral" Dungeon (13-7) [0213]
Get Red Candle
Defeat Gleeok III
Get Triforce Piece #7 and Heart
Dungeon notes: To reveal the seventh dungeon, burn the top bush of the middle
column from the right side of the screen, then enter. The seventh and eighth
dungeons of the second quest follow a spiral layout, with a lot of underground
passage. At one point, you will have to pay an old man 50 rupees or lose a
heart piece like before, so come prepared for that. You get the Red Candle
in this dungeon; if there are any secret rupee rooms you haven't opened up
yet, it'll be easier with this item. The Gleeok boss is the same as usual,
just with more heads to hit.
To the compass:
- Go left and get the compass.

Defeat Dodongos
Get Triforce Piece #8 and Heart
Dungeon notes: The entrance to the eighth dungeon is hidden in the rock face
behind the river on the screen. Bomb the 5th tile from the left on the
stepladder to reach it. This dungeon is packed with activity- 7 secret
passages, many illusionary walls, a Bomb Capacity Increase, and the second
'Grumble grumble' monster. Also, be sure to have at least one key before you
enter the dungeon. Once you get the Magic Key, it opens all doors
automatically, so make getting it the biggest priority. These last few
dungeons combine all the obstacles you've faced before to create a great
final challenge.

Get Silver Arrows
Get Red Ring
Defeat Ganon
Get Ganon's Triforce
Dungeon notes: By now, you may have been regularly purchasing Red Potions to
help you get through the latter dungeons. Now, facing the final dungeon of the
game, you most definitely want to have one! Bomb the 4th tile from the left of
the north rock face in the northwest corner of the overworld to enter, and if
you've gotten all the Triforce pieces, the way opens up. Due to the alarming
number of one-way fake walls, this dungeon can quickly become a nightmare-
thankfully, the map is available early on. As in the first game, the Red Ring
double your defense again to give you even more staying power, which is
extremely useful for this final test. Ganon is defeated in the same way as the
first quest- use the sword to expose him and kill him with the Silver Arrows
you find in this dungeon.
