INTRODUCTION |
Section 1 |
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Nowadays, a racing game is criticised for having rubbish graphics or
sound. With titles such as the Burnout series, or Need for Speed,
the majority of gamers have forgotten what makes a good racing game:
the courses. This game is for an obsolete system, but that doesn't
automatically make it an outdated game. Yes, the graphics aren't the
best of their kind, neither is the sound, but this game offers one
of the most challenging racing experience a gamer can hope for, so
I've written an FAQ for it.

GAME CONTROLS |
Section 2 |
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
This game is moderately easy to control. The menu controls can be
confusing, as in some cases, the START button is to select something,
while in others, button 1 is used instead. So, if you try and press
the START button, and nothing happens, try the 1 button. In all
cases, button 2 is to go back to the previous screen, so no problems
here. On races, the controls are as follows:
Directional pad left and right - Turn the car left or right
START button - Pause the game
Button 1 - Accelerate
Button 2 - Decelerate (brake)

THE RACES AND TIPS |
Section 3 |
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
This sections covers what each race is about, and what the game
screen looks like during one. I'll also give you some handy tips for
beating this game.

[2] - Statistics eg. the lap number and your position
[3] - The Background
[4] - The track
[5] - Your car
Now for some tips: Keep as near the centre of the track as possible,
because if you touch the edges, you'll slow down. It also means you
can turn in each direction equally, as it takes time to turn. If you
are in the tight corner when the track curves, you'll go spinning
into the opposite side, practically bringing your car to a stop,
which is a bad thing if you want to win.
Keep an eye on the level map. It shows you what the next corner is,
so you can prepare for it. You can't see far in front of your car,
so the map is your only early warning of what to expect ahead.
One final tip I'll give is: DO NOT HIT THE OTHER CARS. If you nudge
another car from behind, you'll stop immediately, and you'll need to
reheat your engine before continuing. If an other car hits you from
behind, it will be the one who has to stop.

THE TRACKS |
Section 4 |
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
The reason I've listed each track in simple turnings instead of
drawing maps is the fact that all turns are the same angle and the
same degree. Each left turn is exactly the same, so all I need to do
is list what's coming up. I might add maps at a later date though.
--------------------
Track 1 - San Marino
--------------------
The first track, and it's moderately hard. You might not get first
place on your first try, but if you try hard, and concentrate, it
shouldn't be much of a bother. There aren't too many turnings,
although there are one or two in quick succession, so watch out!

Track 2 - French
----------------
This is a really simple course. It may look hard on the map, but the
corners are few, and this makes this one of the longest tracks in
the game.

Track 3 - British
-----------------
This track looks like a simple rectangle, but be warned. There are
some tricky corners in this course, so keep your eyes on the game.

Track 4 - German
----------------
A relatively straight course, with little curves, and only on the
bottom side. Just watch other cars don't pass you on the straight
sections, you may have a hard time keeping up with them.

This track is in the shape of a boot, and with only five major
difficult parts, it's quite easy to complete in first place.

Track 6 - Portuguese
--------------------
This track has some corners where you'd least except them. It's a
good idea when playing this course, to keep an eye on the map at
all times, and to have an idea what corner to expect to appear
next.

Track 7 - Japanese
------------------
This race is quite possibly the most complicated out of all the
other races combined. It is in the shape of a figure-of-eight, and
it has LOTS of corners one after the other. I recommend practising
this course a few times before racing it for real, as you will
almost definately fail if you don't.

Track 8 - Australian

For the final track, I'd expect something harder, but the only thing
you really need to look out for are the zig-zag bends about two
thirds of the way through the race.

Well, there's an overview of all the tracks in 'Formula 1', so now
I'm going to explain the modes of play.

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
ARCADE MODE |
Section 5 |
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
If you just want to race, or don't have time for a full grand prix
tournement, this is the option for you. Once you select it from the
main menu, you are taken to a screen where you choose your
difficulty level. It doesn't really matter much which one you choose,
the only difference between easy and hard mode is how fast the
opponent's cars travel.
After you choose, you are taken to a screen where you enter your
driver's name. Use D-pad up or down to select a letter, and D-pad
left or right to move back and forth between the letters. Once
you've chosen your name, press the 1 button to continue.
Now you will be at the course select screen. It doesn't matter which
course you start off with, but for difficulty's sake, I suggest you
start with the first track on the list. If you don't start at the
beginning (let's say you start at track 4), then you will progress
through the tracks in the following order:
---------------------> Direction of
travel --->
4 5 6 7 8 1 2 3
The clearing order for the tracks you play are as follows:
----------------------------------------------------
| TRACK | CLEARING POSITION |
|---------------------------|------------------------|
| First track you play | Eighth place |
| Second track you play | Seventh place |
| Third track you play | Sixth place |
| Fourth track you play | Fifth place |
| Fifth track you play | Fourth place |
| Sixth track you play | Third place |
| Seventh track you play | Second place |
| Eighth track you play | First place * |
----------------------------------------------------
* I suggest you start with the harder tracks, so that the
final track you play will be an easier one, making it
a thousand times easier to win your last race.
After you complete each race, you will be shown a high score table
for that track, which doesn't save when you turn off your Gamegear.
The only way to beat your score is if you beat a score you had in
the same play session.
After all the courses are completed (if you've got that far), you
can consider yourself to have completed 50% of the game and are
returned to the main menu, to select Grand Prix mode, which is of a
considerably harder difficulty level. Good luck!

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
GRAND PRIX MODE |
Section 6 |
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
This is the one other mode of play, and in my opinion, the main
section of the game. In this section, you race against all the other
cars and it is your goal to win all the races in third place or less
to proceed. If you come first in the eighth and final track, then you
are the winner of the tournement. In between races, you can
customise your car, but I won't talk about that yet (see the next
section of this FAQ for more information).
Before starting each race, you are shown a menu with options to
customise your car and skip the track. The only real use for skipping
a track is if you wish to come back and do it later, for thats all
this option does. After you've sorted everything you want to, select
'Qualification', which starts your first race. After the first race,
this menu will show: 'Race' and 'Set up car'.
Once again, after each race, you are shown a table with how well you
did, and shows which placing you finished in.

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
CUSTOMISING YOUR CAR |
Section 7 |
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Unfortunately, in 'Formula 1', you cannot choose which car you race
in. Therefore, you are stuck with this car which is a bit on the
slow side. You'll need to customise the stats of your car between
Grand Prix races to be in with a chance of beating the other cars.
On this menu, you are shown a top-down view of your vehicle. Below
the picture, there are various options. On the left, are the
diferent settings, and on the right are the values for those
settings. Use up and down to selet which setting you want, then press
button 1 to start changing the values. Once you've chosen the value
you want, you press button 1 again to go back to the settings. The
options are as follows:
-
| 30 degrees
WING | 45 degrees
| 60 degrees
-
-
GEARS | Manual
| Automatic
-
-
TYRES | Soft
| Hard
-
-
ENGINE | H.I POWER
| H.I TORQUE
-
Once you've finished, press button 2 to return to the races.

Hopefully the final version of the guide. Everything is complete
although I may add a little here and there in the future.

---------------------------------
Fixed two small spelling errors in the FAQ, also crosslinking this
FAQ with the Sega Master System version of this game because they
are so similar.
