Another new GameCube game, another new guide. Don't expect this to be at
all complicated, as I'm doing this guide merely on a rental. Besides,
it's not like this game needs a complex FAQ to begin with. Smashing
Drive is a "decently" fun game, but a short jaunt so I wouldn't
recommend buying it...give it a try if you enjoy arcade-style racing. I
hate to admit it, but FProvo's guide gives mine a run for its money! ;)

1. REVISION HISTORY
========================================================================

Version 1.0 -- Saturday, March 9th, 2002

Everything's done, don't email me, the end. *dances like 'n elf* Also
made a new email addess at yahoo (ninholic) so I can start fresh from
the spam attacks.

========================================================================
2. GAME BASICS
========================================================================

STORY
------

"In Smashing Drive, you live a day in the life of a frantic city cab
driver working for 24 hours straight. On each shift, your mission is to
deliver your fare to the destination in as short a time as possible
using every advantage you can get. This may include running vehicles off
the road, taking shortcuts through malls and buildings, jumping over
traffic jams, and even blowing obstacles clear from your path.

In order to help you navigate the crowded city streets, several power-
ups are available to provide an added edge in achieving your goal.

If you successfully complete all shifts with a high enough score, the
bonus shift, Dusk & Wired will become available."

CONTROLS
---------

Start/Pause  -   . Pause game
                . Start game

Control Pad/Control Stick  -   . Highlight menu selections
                              . Steer the cab

A Button  -   . Confirm menu selection
             . Accelerate the cab

B Button  -   . Cancel menu selection
             . Brakes

R Button  -   Cab horn

C Stick, L Button, X Button, Y Button, Z Button  -   NOT USED.

Quite a few buttons aren't used...lazy Namco, no cookie.

GAME MODES
-----------

Arcade Mode - Get your fare to their destination! Beat the time before
it runs out AND beat the rival CPU cab to move on to the next shift.

Survival Mode - Just like the Arcade Mode -- to get to the next shift
you must beat the clock and rival cab. But there's a twist...you also
have to avoid obstacles as to not damage your cab enough so it explodes.

Head to Head - Full on racing with a 2nd player and split-screen. Too
bad it doesn't have a four-player option...can you imagine the carnage?

SCREEN ICONS
-------------

Best Ride - Guy who's got the best time on the current track. Beat that
sassy punk! Unless it's you of course...heh.

Ride Total - Total time of the current player.

Speed - Um, your car's speed, genius. But why KM? Miles are better. :)

Damage - Again, a no-brainer...the bar shows how much health your cab
has left. If it's all depleted, say goodnight.

Time Limit - The big, beautiful (or ugly, depending) number at the of
the screen is how much time you have left. Once it reaches zero you've
ticked off your fare and lose the game. Try again...

RISKY ROUTES
-------------

Along the track you can sometimes find detours that allow you to shave
off LOTS of time. Of course, if you navigate them sloppily you'll just
lose time. Use as many of these as you can! You also get awarded at the
end of the course for however many you find.

SOME TIPS & TRICKS
-------------------

1) This game takes ALOT of practice to get good at, so don't fret if you
keep losing. And never, never, throw your controller... ;)

2) Again, I mention practice, so you can easily find the best risky
routes for each course, and navigate them without complication.

3) Use your horn (R button) to get the people/cars out of your way or
they'll slow you down. And remember to drive on the right side of the
road! Unless you're so skilled and talented... :p You'll dodge cars
easier.

4) If you MUST hit a car, hit it on it's side...you will not slow down
as much and you'll take less damage.

5) Besides the obvious "drive straight, take corners" crap, there's a
trick skid-turn. Switch quickly from the B to A button to drift.

6) Oh yah, Power-Ups are GOOD. I _can't_ stress that enough.

========================================================================
3. COURSES WALKTHROUGH
========================================================================

I use the term "walkthrough" loosely. This game is 60% skill, and 40%
knowing where the proper risky routes and power-ups are located. There
are 13 different courses in the game, across 4 different shifts. There
is a bonus course at the end of each shift if you earn enough points,
and the fourth shift, Dusk & Wired, is secret too. Make it through one
shift to access this next one in a linear fashion. All in all I find
this game _way_ too short.

-- EARLY BIRD (Easy)
Brooklyn
Wall Street
Little Italy
Bonus: Little Italy

-- RUSH HOUR (Medium)
Brooklyn Navy Yard
Music City Hall
West Central Park
Bonus: West Central Park

-- NIGHT OWL (Hard)
Sea and Air Museum
5th Ave to 34th Street
Times Square
Bonus: Times Square

-- DUSK & WIRED (Secret)
Statue of Liberty

To rack up points, access as many risky routes as possible and nab any
power-ups you can. Also get boost items (like the Turbo Boost) to
fulfill the separate boost tally at the end of a course.

BROOKLYN, EARLY BIRD SHIFT
---------------------------

Starting Time: 45 seconds
Total Risky Routes: 5

-- "Race through JFK airport and across the airstrip with your camera
toting tourist, shortcut through the park with ice skaters towards Coney
Island and end up at the Brooklyn Bridge."

WALL STREET, EARLY BIRD SHIFT
------------------------------

Starting Time: 40 seconds
Total Risky Routes: 5

-- "Pick up your investment banker at the Brooklyn Bridge and race
through tight streets and by Pier 17. Look for the shortcut over the
ferry and get him to Wall Street fast."

LITTLE ITALY, EARLY BIRD SHIFT
-------------------------------

Starting Time: 40 seconds
Total Risky Routes: 6

-- "Meet the lady and her dog at Wall Street and race through the
streets to Little Italy. Look for shortcuts through the fiery building.
Be sure to cut the corners of the streets for the power-ups."

BONUS: LITTLE ITALY, EARLY BIRD SHIFT
--------------------------------------

Entry Requirement: At least $250,000
Starting Time: 30 seconds

-- This course is modeled after the Little Italy area...needless to say
it'll probably tick you off. Watch the aquatic areas. Modeled after
previous risky routes...

BROOKLYN NAVY YARD, RUSH HOUR SHIFT
------------------------------------

Starting Time: 43 seconds
Total Risky Routes: 5

-- "Pick up the gangsters and race through construction yards, over the
cargo ferry, and through China Town to get them to the Brooklyn Navy
Yard."

MUSIC CITY HALL, RUSH HOUR SHIFT
---------------------------------

Starting Time: 54 seconds
Total Risky Routes: 5

-- "Race the tourist through the dockyards, smash through a freight
train, sewers, warehouses, and the Manhattan Tunnel to the Music City
Hall."

WEST CENTRAL PARK, RUSH HOUR SHIFT
-----------------------------------

Starting Time: 48 seconds
Total Risky Routes: 6

-- "Pick up the banker and race through the streets, look for a shortcut
through the museum and look for a shortcut through or even over a
skyscraper. It's your choice."

BONUS: WEST CENTRAL PARK, RUSH HOUR SHIFT
------------------------------------------

Entry Requirement: At least $625,000
Starting Time: 25 seconds

-- Drive precariously and keep your turns sharp and accurate to dodge
that hazards. Watch the construction and aquatic areas. Modeled after
some more risky routes...

SEA AND AIR MUSEUM, NIGHT OWL SHIFT
------------------------------------

Starting Time: 48 seconds
Total Risky Routes: 4

-- "Recklessly get your grocery toting lady from the store through the
snow covered streets of New York smashing snowmen to gain power-ups as
you go to the Sea and Air Museum."

5TH AVE TO 34TH STREET, NIGHT OWL SHIFT
----------------------------------------

Starting Time: 49 seconds
Total Risky Routes: 3

-- "Drive the lady and her dog by or over an aircraft carrier, you can
take a shortcut through the bus terminal, and through Madison Square
Garden during a basketball game to 34th Street."

TIMES SQUARE, NIGHT OWL SHIFT
------------------------------

Starting Time: 49 seconds
Total Risky Routes: 5

-- "Get the gangsters through downtown New York, take a shortcut through
a movie theater to Times Square. Race a giant ape up and over the Empire
State Building if you are fast enough."

BONUS: TIMES SQUARE, NIGHT OWL SHIFT
-------------------------------------

Entry Requirement: At least $1,000,000
Starting Time: 25 seconds

-- Oooh...I don't even like traffic in real life, so why would I want to
play a level full of it? The middle road has the least obstacles and
near the end watch your back in the traffic jam.

SECRET: STATUE OF LIBERTY, DUSK & WIRED SHIFT
----------------------------------------------

Entry Requirement: Pass all previous shifts
Starting Time:  32 seconds
Total Risky Routes: 8

-- If you've made it this far, I salute you as you're officially insane
at this game. This course is terribly long and you're going to have to
use all your skills and panash to get through (did I honestly just say
'panash'?). At the end you get to the glorious Statue of Liberty. Arf.

End of game...

You get no passcode to enter Gaelco's Smashing Drive world rankings web
page <http://www.gaelco.com/smashing>, because they were to frikkin'
lazy to include the feature for GameCube. Who's bright idea was that?!
Namco better make it up to me by making Pac-Man World 2 extra sweet!

========================================================================
4. POWER-UPS
========================================================================

These take the appearance of spheres along the course. Nab any of them
you can. The better ones are tucked away it more exotic locales.

SONIC BLAST
------------

Upgrades you cab's horn to that of a foghorn. It's insanely loud, and
also powerful -- blowing the horn will "shatter" any obstacles directly
ahead of you. Use this wisely, as it doesn't last very long. This one
just reminds me of that movie 'The Mask' when Jim Carrey whips out that
tiny squeeze horn and blows up the car... :p

TURBO BOOST
------------

Just as the name suggests. Grab this power-up and some jet engines in
the back of the cab will be activated, giving you extra speed for a
limited time.

GLIDER
-------

This one is quite handy; it creates two fin pieces on the sides of the
cab, enabling it to take more air in jumps...a glider ensures easier
access to additional power-ups.

4X4
----

Hard to get, but worth it. Transforms your cab into a Godly monster
truck allowing you to drive through/over any obstacles ahead.

REPAIR
-------

Repairs all damage done to your cab.

CUTTER
-------

Activates some chainsaw blades on the cab, which allows you to slice
throw obstacles. Cel Damage, Twisted Metal, muwahaha...

CRASH
------

Makes a "ram plate" appear on the front of the cab...use it to ram (what
a coincidence) through obstacles.

TIME
-----

Uh...adds more time to your clock.

BONUS
------

Free points! Grab as many of these bonuses as you can find.

?
--

Random power-up that will give you a surprise. Like Fortune Cookies,
these hold many great mysteries... ;)

5. LEGAL INFO
========================================================================

This guide may ONLY appear on the following site:

- GameFAQs <www.GameFAQs.com>

That's because I DIRECTLY send my FAQs there. I always hate to get email
telling me to update a guide...even when it is updated! This was
especially the case with my first FAQ, for Zelda: MM, so this legal note
is here to fix that problem.

If you want to use this FAQ, webmasters, take note!

Webmasters do NOT:
-------------------

Post this guide directly on your site. This doesn't apply to GameFAQs,
as shown above.

Webmasters please DO:
----------------------

If you want to post this FAQ, do NOT post it directly. Instead link to
the page on GameFAQs that lists all the guides for the game. In other
words, DON'T link to the URL that ends with ".txt" or ".doc", which is
the actual text guide. Again, nothing that ends with ".txt" or ".doc"
This is all in the GameFAQs' legal section. Got it? Good.

This FAQ may not be used in any magazine, video game guide, or any
possible form of printed or electronic media. It may not be used in any
form of commercial efforts for your website or place of business. It
cannot be given away as a free item, for profit, for promotional
purposes, or given away in any situation whatsoever.
