1.0 INTRODUCTION
--'`````'-'``````````````'-----------------------------------------------------
Although Harvest Moon: Magical Melody (shortened to HM: MM or MM) seems easy
to make money in, it can be difficult if you do not know what you are doing.
In addition, the number one obvious way to make money is from your crops. Not
all people can do this however, as it requires a significant amount of time
each day. This guide will help show all the various ways to make money and
help you decide which way is the best.
Oh yeah, e-mail any corrections, suggestions and so forth to:
sabareq2 (AT) hotmail (DOT) com
You will receive full credit. I'd love to be able to do things like fish every
fish and this and that, but there's only so much information I can gather. I
only shipped 40 cabbage, so no strawberry data for me, as an example.
Oh yeah, and I'd rather not have this guide on ANY website other than GameFAQs.
Please send me an email if someone has stolen or reproduced this document!

2.0 FORAGING
--'`````'-'``````````'---------------------------------------------------------
Each season is home to special items that drop on occassion around the village.
These items can be sold, used as gifts, and so forth. Unlike in previous
installments of Harvest Moon, foraged items are very random in their drop rate.
Some days nothing will be on the ground and then the next day you may have a
lot of items on the ground.
Foraging does not make a lot of money and it is rather time intensive, but it
is very efficient. Picking up items takes little stamina use. With a decent
sized rucksack, you can grab all the items in one trip too. Most foraged items
are also edible and restore stamina, making for a good quick-fix when you're
about to collapse.
Foraged items also make excellent free gifts. People like Theodore and Alex
will even gladly accept toadstools, while Saibara and Meryl will take coral
with pleasure.
Let's see what is available in each season.

3.0 CROPS
--'`````'-'```````'------------------------------------------------------------
No two plants are alike. Each type of crop or tree that you can plant will
yield drastically different results in terms of growth time and how much the
plant sells for. The profit margin on crops in this game can be massive.
Seeds cost very little and the shipped product sells for several times the
cost amount.
Seeds can be planted in three different qualities of soil, indicated by how
dark the soil is. The darkest being high quality, the lightest being low
quality, and the in-between being of normal quality. Consequently, crops in
different quality soils have different properties, as shown in the following
table.
...........................................................
SOIL CROP VALUE SOIL COLOR GROW TIME
````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````
Low Quality 70% Light color One day longer
Normal Quality 100% Medium color Normal
High Quality 200% Dark color One day shorter
So a turnip grown in NQ soil will sell for 100% of its normal value (90g) and
will grow in a normal amount of time. The same turnip in HQ soil grows faster
and sells for 200% of its value (180g). The LQ turnip ends up growing slow
and sells for just 70% of its value (63g).
You can improve soil qiality with fertilizers. After you ship 10 limestone, it
becomes available to buy. The fertilizer increases soil quality by one level
for each use in a 9x9 area centered on your character. It is highly
reccomended to ship the 10 limestones quickly if you have LQ soil to work with.
The easiest way to do this is to go into the mine, go down one level, and break
all the rocks on that floor until you get a limestone. Repeat the process.
Take note that if you have poor soil, you can plant crops on any other
property, but take warning, if someone moves in and takes that land with your
crops, you will lose them. Onto the crops!
4.0 ANIMALS
--'`````'-'`````````'----------------------------------------------------------
There is of course another way to making money in HM: MM and that is through
animals. The two main methods involve selling off an animal or selling it's
produce. Animal produce comes in three qualities. The more affection an
animal has towards you, the more likely it is to produce the highest quality
produce. Take note though that even a ten heart cow will on occassion produce
low quality milk.
As with crops, produce sell prices are percentages of the normal quality, as
seen in the following:
.......................................................................
QUALITY VALUE EGG NAME MILK NAME WOOL NAME
````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````
Low Quality 70% Egg Milk Dirty Wool
Normal Quality 100% Good Egg Good Milk Ordinary Wool
High Quality 200% Special Egg Special Milk Shiny Wool
In addition, eggs, milk, and wool can be turned into other kinds of produce
with the help of machines that you can buy. These sell for more than the
original product, but the machines have a rather large initial investment.
..............................................................................
QUALITY VALUE EGG CREATES... MILK CREATES... WOOL CREATES...
```````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````
Low Quality 70% Mayo Butter/Cheese Dull Yarn
Normal Quality 100% Good Mayo Good Butter/Cheese Yarn
High Quality 200% Special Mayo Special Butter/Cheese Special Yarn
===============================================================================
CHICKENS
===============================================================================
The lowest tier of animal is the chicken. It is cheap to maintain, easy to
reproduce, easy to replace, and has a low initial cost and requirement.
Chickens need a chicken coop before they can be bought. The coop also allows
you to incubate an egg, which will create a baby chicken that grows into an
adult egg-laying chicken.
Growing a chicken, however, takes precious time, even though it is free. Adult
chickens cost 1,200g and can lay eggs immediately. They will begin laying the
lowest quality eggs until you can get their affection level higher. Despite
that fact, hatching a chicken yourself is still cheaper and the most economical
choice.
Chickens can lay three qualities of eggs.
....................................
QUALITY SELL EGG NAME
`````````````````````````````````````
Low Quality 56g Egg
Normal Quality 80g Good Egg
High Quality 160g Special Egg
These can be turned into mayonnasie with the proper machine. The mayonnaise
maker is available to buy from the Junk Shop and costs a hefty 3,000g.
...........................................
QUALITY SELL MAYO NAME
````````````````````````````````````````````
Low Quality 84g Mayonnasie
Normal Quality 120g Good Mayonnasie
High Quality 240g Special Mayonnasie
Chickens can be sold for half of their buy price. This is generally not a
good idea. 600g isn't much, and before you can raise another adult chicken,
the sold chicken would have made you more money from eggs. Selling chickens
is best left for a quick fix of needed money.
Maintaining chickens is an interesting task. Chickens can be left indoors or
outdoors. There are differences obviously between them as shown here:
Chicken feed costs 20g for one unit of feed. Indoor chickens can either be
handfed the food or eat it from the bin if you place it there. They will not
eat from the food bin if you handfeed them. Handfeeding chickens causes them
to like you more, along with picking them up. It is unknown if outdoor
chickens raise hearts as fast as indoor handfed chickens.
Because the cost of chicken feed takes a significant chunk from potential egg
profit, you can contruct a windmill near your coop. Windmills carry a rather
steep initial price of 4,000g and 40 pieces of lumber. The benefit from this
is the ability to toss an ear of corn into the windmill.
1 ear of corn = 15 units of chicken feed
Now the question: is it worth it? It depends.
15 units of chicken feed cost 300g
1 LQ ear of corn is worth 105g
1 NQ ear of corn is worth 150g
1 HQ ear of corn is worth 300g
If your corn is of high quality, then you're just wasting cash on the expensive
windmill. However, you can buy corn for less than 300g at the Spring seed
shop, making the windmill slightly economical. It will of course take nearly
120 ears of corn before the windmill pays itself off, so you decide if it's
worthwhile. I was growing a TON of corn and had a huge amount to sacrifice to
the grinder for the chickens. Plus, the windmill looks nice.
As a sidenote, chickens also eat weeds, handfed that is. This is a cheap way
to keep them fed without having to invest in feed, a windmill, or corn. Take
care as it nears towards winter though, as the weeds will die off.
Now as for the other cost of a chicken, it's life.
Chickens have a lifespan in the game. It is unknown to me, but is probably
around 3-4 years. Feel free to correct me. Along with this, poorly taken
care of chickens can get sick. Animal medicine costs 800g. Now, it is
actually cheaper to let the chicken die off and raise a new one, but that's
rather cruel. If your chicken is able to produce good or special eggs, it's
best to give it the medicine as it takes a lengthy amount of time to raise a
new chicken back to that level of laying eggs. If your chicken only pops out
low quality eggs, then it's your call on whether you want to let it die or save
it.
5.0 FISHING
--'`````'-'`````````'----------------------------------------------------------
There are a decent amount of fish in this game. Nearly all of them can be
cooked in some way. The two downsides to fishing are the time investment
and the stamina hit. Most fish don't sell too well raw, but cooking them can
significantly increase their value. Let's see what we can get from raw fish.
