1.) This is a Gauntlet: Dark Legacy guide for the Nintendo Gamecube.
This has to be one of my top 5 games of all time and I'm an old school
gamer! This is my first FAQ, so it's probably going to suck but I
figured
I'd give it a shot. Now most bosses in this game are very tough and just
sitting there firing away at them is sure death. I'm hoping when you
read this guide that you will get a basic strategy down. I am in no way
saying that my strategy and plans are perfect, they're just here to give
you a basic idea on what to do against the bossess. Also not that I have
named their moves to the best of my knowledge and these are not the real
names of their attacks. Also, I am writing strategies down that do not
use any items. With this guide, I am assuming you know a few things....
*The Controls
*The Average Level of the Boss
*What 'Turbo' Attacks are
***VERY Important note***
I no longer accept strats against bosses. I have enough. If you have a
question about
a boss though, feel free to e-mail me about it. Just don't send me an e-
mail asking
where a runestone is. This isn't a walkthrough. If I get enough e-mails
asking me to write
a Gamecube version walkthrough I will. So far I have gotten no e-mails
asking me
so don't hold your breath.
Ok now, we can move on to the guide....
*******************************************************
2.) The Horrifying Lich, boss of the Forsaken Province
*******************************************************
Suggested Level: 30
The Lich should be the first boss you tackle in the game. He's huge,
like all bossess, but very very slow. Jesters and Archers should eat him
alive. (Or is it "eat him undead"?) He also looks the coolest. His
attacks are as follows....
JUMP POUND: He'll jump in the air and land very close to you, causing a
wave to cover most of his surround area. This, of course, damages you.
This atttack is easy to dodge as he is slow on the jump and the wave is
somewhat slow also.
SPIN SWING: Another attack that's easy to dodge. He just swings around
in place like a whirlwind with his axe out. You shouldn't be close
enough for him to hit you in the first place....again.
SKELETAL HAND: He raises his hands and a huge skeletal hand comes out
underneath you. When in the hand, you move slow and cannot attack. So if
you see him do it, quickly run either left or right.
TAUNT: He slams his axe down and says "Come on". Does nothing to you but
sounds cool.
CHOKE: He lifts you high in the air and well, chokes you. He will only
do this at close range of course, so it's easy to avoid. Does average
damages.
MAGGOT SPIT: A pretty cool move. The Lich spits up a chunk of his own
rotting flesh, which lands on the floor. Maggots will then start coming
out. These of course will charge at you as soon as they pop out. You can
destroy the flesh/generator.
GROUND BREAKER: Somewhat hard to dodge. He raises his axe high, hitting
the ground with it. This causes the ground to crack with green energy,
doing more damage than any other move. Though he raises his axe slowly,
the energy has huge range.
SKULLS: He throws only one at the beginning, but two when he's really
hurt. Easy to dodge and minor damage.
STRATEGY:
As he starts coming out of the ground, start throwing your weapons at
him.
When he jumps to do his Jump Pound, simply run either right or left to
dodge it. The one skull is easy to dodge but two can cause a little
trouble. He doesn't throw them directly as you, but to both sides of
you. It's used to fool you, as when he draws back to throw it you don't
know whether to stand still if he throws 2 or to dodge if he throws one.
If he spits up a chunk of flesh, quickly destroy it as the maggots are
annoying. The Ground Breaker is annoying to dodge because you can see it
coming but the green energy covers a lot of ground. Take shots when you
can at him and unload when he misses the Spin Swing, Ground Breaker, and
Jump Pound. Of course you should also unload turbo attacks like the
Jester's "Hammer Time" whenever your bar builds up. He seems to have a
boatload of HP but he really can't dish it out. He is weak against the
Book of Protection, which is found in the Sky realm. It will burn him
with Holy Light at the beginning of the battle and do major damage. I
suggest you have this when you face him but is not a dire need to defeat
him.
****************************************************
3.) The Mighty Dragon, boss of the Mountain Kingdom
****************************************************
Suggested Level: 30
The second boss you should fight, he's pretty easy. Maybe even easier
than the Lich. He does not move, but his attacks do ALOT more damage
than
the Lich's. His attacks are as follows....
FIRE BALL: Much like the Lich, he fires 1 or 2 at random. The single one
is fired directly at you but he fires two right beside you,
attempting to fool you into running into them. Best you can do is hope
you know which way to move.
FIRE BREATH: He will use this when he thinks you're too close to him.
You CANNOT dodge this unless you run behind one of the rocks or at the
very edge of the level opposite of him. Does above average damage.
GROUND POUND: He hits the ground with his claws causing a wave to come
out. You cannot dodge this unless you behind a rock. Average damage.
WING WAVE: Exactly the same to the Ground Pound except much faster and
harder to dodge.
STRATEGY:
Don't use the rocks. He will destroy them with his fire balls anyway
after a couple of shots. Stay on the southern side of the level and take
shots at him when you dodge, or get hit by a fireball. When he does
miss the fire breath though, unload as many shots as you can. Only use
the rocks if he tries to use the Wing Wave or Ground Pound. Or course
using your turbo attacks every chance you get is highly advised. He has
average HP, so it won't take a long time to take him down like the Lich.
He is weak to the Legendary Ice Axe which is found in the Castle realm.
It will freeze him for about 30 seconds, but causes no damage. You don't
really need it against him.
*******************************************************
4.) The Three-Headed Chimera, boss of the Castle Realm
*******************************************************
Suggested Level: 40
The Third boss you should fight is a pain. With three heads, he has
triple attacks which can cause A LOT of damage. He does not move, like
the dragon, but is far more dangerous. His attacks are as follows....
TRIPLE FIRE BALL: Each head, the lion, snake, and falcon, will fire a
lightning ball, acid ball, and fire ball. They will ALL aim directly
at you making it easy to dodge, but if you don't, be prepared to take
major damage.
TRIPLE BREATH ATTACK: A very evil attack, All three will blow a breath
attack, covering about 80% of the level. The only way to dodge this is
to stay in the very back of the level and even then it may hit you.
STRATEGY:
As soon as the level starts, run to the right and stay in the very back
of it. Over here it's easier to dodge the far left head's fire ball,
which
every little missed attack by the Chimera is a good thing. Take pot
shots at him when he missed his triple fire ball and turbo attack
whenever you can. When he does miss the breath, which he should
considering you're in the very back to the far right, unload as many
free shots as you can on him. He is weak against the Scimitar of
Decapitation which is found in the Forrest Realm. I HIGHLY advise
getting this before facing him.
*************************************************
5.) The Vile Plague Fiend, boss of the Sky Realm
*************************************************
SUGGESTED LEVEL: 50
A pain in the neck if there has ever been one. He only has 3 attacks but
all are very damaging and one is almost impossible to dodge! He does not
move and takes more of a beating than any of the 3 bosses above. His
attacks are as follows....
DOUBLE SLIME BALL: Shoots 2 slime balls directly at you. Pretty easy to
dodge but they can cause a lot of damage if you don't make the effort to
dodge them. He uses this attack the most.
SLIME SWING: This is the attack you cannot dodge. He will use a huge
slime arm to swing across the screen. The only way to avoid damage on
this is to block just before it hits you. Somewhat heard to time, but
you
really need to as this attack causes huge damage to you. **NOTE!!**
There is a way to dodge the slime swing, see the FAQ section.
SLIME DIVE: Very easy to dodge. He dives into his slime pool and causes
the three barrels in the level to overflow, spewing slime. This is easy
to dodge because you would have to be VERY close to barrels to get
hit. Does average damage.
STRATEGY:
A very hard boss due to his Slime Swing attack. Fire pot shots as
usual when he misses the Double Slime Ball attack and unload when he
misses the Slime Dive, which is always. Stay away from the barrels at
all times though. Use turbo attack when you can. You're going to either
need A LOT of HP and armor or learn to block that Slime Swing. It's
vital to
learn to do that if you want to live. He is weak against the Javelin of
Blinding. It does major damage to him and I suggest you it from the
Mountain Kingdom before you even think about messing with this guy.
******************************************************
6.) The Deadly Spider Queen, boss of the Forest Realm
******************************************************
Suggested Level: 60
A pretty easy boss considering how far in the game she is. Her room is
bigger that the average bosses allowing you to dodge easier as well. She
has a few attacks, all that are pretty easy to get around, though her
speed will put the Archer and Jester to shame. She takes an average
amount of hits to destroy and she does move around. He attacks are as
follows....
POISON SPIT: A simple attack. Spits a poison ball at you. Easy to dodge,
and only does minor damage.
WEB SPIT: Like the Poison Spit, only it will land on the ground, causing
small spiders to come out. The spiders will attack you, and just be
plain annoying. You can destroy the small web to stop the spiders from
coming.
CHARGE: Simple. She charges you, but man her speed! It's hard to see
coming and even when you do, it's still hard to dodge. Thank God it only
does average damage.
WHIP STRIKE: Another fast attack. She usually uses this after the Charge
Attack. She strikes you with her whip, but one hit isn't enough for her,
she usually hits you about 3 times with it. Counting up all the damage,
she does a big above average damage on you.
BACK KICK: If you get behind her and get close to her, she'll use her
back 4 legs to kick you. You shouldn't be that close in the first place.
Does minor damage.
STRATEGY:
Stay far from her at ALL times. Fire regular shots when she misses the
Poison Spit and quickly get rid of any webs she spits out. With the
distance you should have from her, when she charges, you should be able
to see it coming and run out of the way. When she misses, pound her with
the slow, powerful ranged attacks. If she does hit you with her charge,
as soon as you get up, do your turbo attack. This will do one of two
things. It will make you invincible for a short time so her whip strikes
won't hurt you or cause her to scream, allowing you to run to a safe
distance again. She is weak against the Toxic Bellows, found in the
Desert Realm. I advise you get this as it does no damage to her, but
lowers her attack damage and slows her down. Just the edge you need
against her Charge attack.
*********************************************
7.) The Evil Genie, boss of the Desert Realm
*********************************************
Suggested Level: 70
A very difficult boss. He creates minions faster than any other boss,
takes A LOT of shots to kill, and the Legend Weapon used against him
doesn't hurt him, only blind him! Most of his attacks are hard to see
coming and with the minions everywhere, they can also be hard to dodge.
His attacks are as follows....
EYE BEAM: A simple red beam he shoots from his eye. Easy to dodge, just
run left or right.
EYE SWEEPING BEAM: Argh, you'll learn to hate this move. Does above
average damage. He fires a beam that covers from left to right of the
screen. The only way to dodge it is to run right beside him. But that
can set you up for the....
SWORD SWOOP: Get too close to him, and you'll meet one of his swords.
Does average damage.
TWISTER SHOT: A slow attack. Shoots a mini twister at you, simply run
left or right to dodge it. But that's not all, when it hits you OR the
wall, 2 mini genies appear, and begin attacking you. Kill them as soon
as they appear.
GROUND SMASH: Hits the ground and causes parts of the roof to fall on
you. Rarely does this happen, but it is hard to dodge. Average damage.
STRATEGY:
As I said, a very difficult boss. Fire regular shots as him when he
misses
the Eye Beam attack. When he does the Eye Sweep, quickly run right to
him but DO NOT attack him, as that will give him enough time to use the
Sword Swoop. As soon as the Eye Sweep is finished, run back to the wall
so the swords don't get you. As soon as any mini-genies appear, dispose
of them, if you don't and find a lot around you, just use a magic potion
to clear them away. He is weak against the Lamp of Obstruction. It
causes him to go blind awhile where he will only attack in one place for
a small amount of time. You don't really need it against him.
*********************************************
8.) The Powerful Yeti, boss of the Ice Realm
*********************************************
Suggested Level: 70
An easy boss. Kind of a break between the Genie and Wraith. He's very
slow, and his attacks, minus one, are easy to dodge and actually doesn't
take too many hits to take down. His attacks are as follows....
ICE BALL: Creates an ice ball. Throws it at you. Yawn. Easy to dodge.
Minor damage.
WALL CRUSH: He smacks his fist against the wall, causing a bigger ice
ball to come down, bouncing towards you. Kinda hard to dodge at first
but once you see him do it a few times, you'll be able to dodge it with
ease. Does average damage.
GROUND POUND: Hits the ground with both his hands causing a wave to come
out. Like the Dragon's Wing Wave, you cannot dodge this. You must block
it. It's easy to see coming so you should be able to block it everytime.
This will also cause ice shards to come up right under/beside you, so
you must move, then block. Does average damage.
ICE BREATH: He sweeps next to him with a breath attack. Only does this
when you are too close. Does average damage.
STRATEGY:
He's a little too easy. Like I said, he's very slow since he's so big.
Fire regular shots at him when he misses both Ice Ball attacks. Once you
get the hand of his Ground Pound attack, you can punish him for missing
it with slow power shots and turbo attacks. He's weak against the
Parchment of Fire which is found in the Forsaken Province level. It
burns him causing minor damage. You don't have to get it since he's
already far too easy. Nothing really else to say about him, except he's
the last easy boss for awhile.
****************************************************************
9.) The Dream Destroying Shadow Wraith, boss of the Dream Realm
****************************************************************
Suggested Level: 80
By FAAAAAAARR the hardest boss in this game. His attacks are
evil, almost impossible to dodge, hard to see coming and do insane
amounts of damage. The Legendary Weapon used against him doesn't hurt
him so you can't really rely on that either. All I can say it be
prepared
for the fight of your life. You will call him 'daddy' before the fight
ends and I dare day you'll be using language your mother wouldn't be
proud of after he hits you with his Shadow Spines over and over. Also
we all know that a character grows taller when they gain levels, a
friend
of mine has figured out that to be able to hit the Wraith from a good
distance,
you need to be level 80 or higher. Anyting lower, and you'll have to get
close
to hit him thus, making his attacks harder to dodge. His attacks are as
follows....
SHADOW SPINES: His most annoying attack and he uses it the most. He
causes three shadow blades, that look like spines, to cover either the
entire left side of right side of the screen. Sometimes, but rarely, he
covers the entire screen with the exception of the far left and right of
the screen. It is VERY hard to see coming. Does above average damage.
Just try to run to the opposite side when he does it the best you can.
If he does the center spine attack and you're in the center of the
screen, just pray you either hit block in time or your armor skill is
high enough where it doesn't eat you alive.
SHADOW SNAKES: Hit easiest attack to dodge and does minor damage. He
fires about 5 mini snakes at you that go in all directions. The move is
so slow you can easily run around them. Too bad he doesn't do this
attack a lot.
SHADOW BALL: Fires a shadow ball directly as you. If it hits you, a
small cloud of black shadow(?) will stay where it hit you. You cannot
fire if you stay in that cloud, so if it hits you, move out of that spot
fast. It does average damage.
BIG GREEN THING: He shoots a big green thing, I have no idea what it is,
directly at you, it moves slow and is easy to dodge. It does high damage
if it hits you though, so make every effort to dodge.
SHADOW SPIN: He uses this if you get too close to him. He spins his
spines around like a fan, knocking you down and causing major damage.
Whatever you do, NEVER get close to him.
SHADOW BEAM: Fires a beam of pure darkness at you. Easy to see coming
and easy to dodge, but does minor damage if you don't.
STRATEGY:
Man what can I say? This guy is as hard as they come. Whatever you do,
don't stand in one place too long or you're gonna eat Shadow Spines
forever. Keep moving and firing at him when you can. Use normal shots as
the slow powerful ones are far too slow against this guy. He is weak
against the Lantern of Revelation, found in the Dream realm. It creates
a wall for awhile. While the wall is up, he cannot hit you with the
Shadow Ball or the Big Green Thing. Go ahead and get it as you need all
the help you can get against this guy.
*****************************************************
10.) The Armored Skorne, boss of the Cathedral Realm
*****************************************************
Suggested Level: 90
Skorne isn't what he used to be that's for sure. Though this form is
tougher than his underworld version, it's still nothing to be afraid
of. He doesn't move and he takes the average amount of hits. His attacks
are as follows....
ACID BALL: Throws an acid ball directly at you. Just run either left
or right and dodge it. Does average damage.
FIRE BALL: Exactly the same as the Acid Ball. Same rules apply.
DEMON'S BREATH: Fires a stream of fire at you for above average damage.
He usually does this two times in a row, so if he hits you once, he's
gonna hit you twice. He leans back a little before he does it, giving
you time to dodge it.
WING WAVE: You cannot dodge this, so you must block it. He waves his
wings and creates a sonic boom, covering the screen. Does average damage
if you don't block it.
SKORNE'S SYMBOL: He hits the ground and causes what looks like a symbol
to appear under your character. It does major damage and if he hits it,
you can bet your money that he'll follow it up with one or two fire
breaths
dodge it at all costs.
STRATEGY:
He's about average in difficulty. Just keep moving, firing normal shots
at him when his misses either the acid ball or fire ball. When he misses
his Skorne's Symbol, punish him with slow power shots and turbo attacks.
If
he misses a fire breath, let him miss it again because if you attack
after his first, you're gonna eat the second. Just don't forget about
his Wing Wave. He likes to pull that move out to just throw you off
guard. He is weak against no weapon, BUT you can get the Soul Savior
from
the Cathedral realm. With this up, he cannot hit you with his Acid Ball
or Fire Ball for a little while. You don't really need it, but it is
nice
to have.
***********************************************************
11.) The True Form of Skorne, boss of the Underworld Realm
***********************************************************
Suggested Level: 90
HAH! What a joke! He's EXACTLY the same as his first form except two new
attacks......
NEEDLE WAVE: Fires a wave of needles that covers a good amound of the
screen. It only does minor damage. It really poses no threat.
CHEST BEAM: He fires a huge beam out of his chest directly at you. This
attack does a lot of damage but is very easy to see coming. Just keep
running left or right when you see him bending back holding his chest.
STRATEGY:
Exactly the same except watch for the Chest Beam now. You should have
his gauntlets from the first flight. Punish him with them instead of you
regular weapon. He'll go down in about a minute.
***********************************************************
12.) The Demonic Wizard Garm, last boss of the entire game
***********************************************************
Suggested Level: 94
Amazing. He looks cool. His level is cool. He's the last boss, but he's
almost as easy as the second form of Skorne. He takes a few more hits to
take down though. His attacks are as follows....
PLASMA BALL: Fires a very slow, very powerful purple plasma ball at you.
The wind up to it so slow, you can see it coming a mile away. Simple
run left or right when he fires it.
PLASMA WAVE: Claps his hands together and creates a huge wave. You
cannot dodge this and you must block it. It moves very slowly but does
a lot of damage. It'll be in your best intrest to try your hardest to
block this.
PLASMA LIGHTNING: If you get too close to him, he'll use this. It does
high damage. You shouldn't be close enough for him to use this anyways.
EYE LIGHTNING: His last attack is his most powerful. He fires very fast,
very deadly eye beams at you. It's hard to see coming and does a lot of
damage to you. If you're shooting at him when you see him lean back for
that split second before he fires, you're gonna get hit. Yes, even you
Jesters and Archers.
STRATEGY:
Keep moving until he begins to wind up for his Plasma Ball and unload a
few regular shots into him. After he gets the shot off, dodge it and
repeat. If he uses the Plasma Wave, just block and fire a few shots into
him. The reason you must keep moving is it will help you dodge his Eye
Lightning attack. If he uses this, and he will, dodge it and return fire
with turbo attack and regular shots. Don't use slow power shots are they
are far too slow for his fast recovery from his Lightning. Use this
method and he should go down in about 5 minutes.
Congratulations! You just beat Gauntlet: Dark Legacy! Now sit back and
enjoy the VERY short ending.

13.) FAQS
**********
In this section I will address emails I get. Some are questions and some
are strategies.
*WHY ISN'T THERE A HEALTH METER? I always like knowing how
much to go until the boss is dead.(from Mark Eberle)*
Well the best I can figure is that they added it for
challenge. Besides, how many other action/RPG's show you the
boss' life bar?
*How do I perform a Turbo attack?*
I hate you. Go away.
*I beat the Spider Queen in less than a minute. Here are 3
easy steps to beating her. 1. Get about 6,000 gold 2. Buy about
10 Invincibilties 3. Run up to the Queen and just keep
pounding her. This probably works on other bosses but the spider
queen gives lots of exp. (from Mark Eberle)*
*How do I stop my stats from dropping on my old character
after I start a new character? (from many people)*
I get this question a lot simply because as of right now, my
FAQ is the only Gamecube version up. The way around this
glitch is to start a new character in every class and save
them. They can be level one and haven't even beat the first level.
Pick your first character (say a Jester) and buy his/her stats back
then switch to another character (say Warrior), the stats won't
drop on the Jester because the Warrior is not a new
character.
*What do the items 'Hand of Death' and 'Health Vampire' do?
(from many people)*
Hand of Death- When you are hit in melee combat, the enemy
takes damage as well. It does not effect archers, bombers or
bosses.
Health Vampire- When you connect with an attack in melee
combat, you gain health equal to the amount of damage you
did. (Like the Drain Sword in Final Fantasy 4)
*When you fight the Plague Fiend, use the triple shot power
up. If you get at the right angle (usually the far right)
all three shots will pound him!
(from
[email protected])*
*Ryan Plater says: Use the resist acid item (the gas mask)
when fighting the plague fiend, his attacks won't hurt you!
***NOTE*** I tried this method and it does NOT work. Plater is a liar.
*What's the difference between NGC's version and PS2's
version? (from many people)*
"Nintendo Gamecube Exclusive Features: Expanded inventory
system, stereo sound, higher resolution graphics, and brand-
new power-ups available only on the Gamecube make this the
BEST GAUNTLET DARK LEGACY EVER!"....Well, that's what the
back of the box says.
*Just wanted to tell you about a strategy that I've found. I rented the
game, so I can't check out this strategy with other characters.*
Spider Queen:
Buy 12 Magic Hammers. Once you've equipped them, run directly over to
the Queen Spider and hold down the A button. With a Level 60 Wizard, it
only took me 35 hits to kill her. BTW, as long as you hold down the A
button, she can't hurt you. You'll exit the level with Full Health,
11,000 gold, and be 2-3 levels higher. You might want to buy more than
12
magic hammers the first couple of times to make sure you don't run out.
Garm:
By this point in the game, you should have TONS of cash. It spent around
30k just buying super shots for this last boss. Making sure to turn on
the super shot first, I simply held down the A button, and that's the
end of the story. Garm was unable to hurt me, and I killed him after
about a minute of constant firing.
Chances are, both of these strategies will work on any boss, but once
again, I don't have the game anymore, and I am unable to try it. The
hammer strategy is preferable, because it costs right around 6k to
implement. This gives you 7k for stat updates when you are fighting the
Spider Queen. (from AardWolf)
*tracknfield2K1 says you can dodge the slime swing attack if
you're behind a barrel! By 'behind' it means your character
must be on the side of the barrel closer to you and not the
Plague Fiend.*
