Section Four: Basics of the Game **ULTGOLF_4**

Controls are kind of tough to describe given their variety of functions. For
menus, simply use the D-Pad to navigate and the Start Button to confirm. All
other necessary controls are for gameplay, discussed later on.

The Main Menu
-------------
Tournament Mode is one-player only. You'll begin by playing eighteen holes and
you must have taken less than 72 strokes -- you must be under par; each hole
averages a par of four. Afterwards, you'll enter the real tournament, where all
you CAN do is your best.
Practice also is limited to one player. You can practice at either the Master
(qualifier) Course or the Champ (real tournament) Course. Practice any hole you
wish.
Records simply shows you the leaderboards.
Match Play is a two-player mode. (You need only select 2P at the title screen;
no extra equipment needed.) The basic idea is to play some holes and win them
by getting a better score than your opponent. After playing nine or eighteen
holes, you'll be allowed to see who won more holes and thereby wins.
In Stroke Play, you'll play nine or eighteen holes and the winner is based on
whoever of the two of you has the best score after winning.

Playing the Game
----------------
When you initially get your turn, you are able to use the D-Pad to navigate the
hole and see the terrain.
Once you're done, press the A Button and you'll be able to set the trajectory
of your shot. Remember to consider the wind speed (near the arrow in miles per
hour (one mile is about 1.61 kilometers)), the terrain along the trajectory,
and how far you want to hit it.
Press A again and we can choose more stuff.
Press A once more to confirm your trajectory. You then get to choose your club.
They all shoot at different distances by themselves. From most to least
distance, you'll have:
~~ 1W (wooden driver)
~~ 3W (three wood)
~~ 4W (four wood)
~~ 1I (one iron)
~~ 3I (three iron)
~~ 4I (four iron)
~~ 5I (five iron)
~~ 6I (six iron)
~~ 7I (seven iron)
~~ 8I (eight iron)
~~ 9I (nine iron)
~~ PW (power wedge)
~~ SW (weaker wedge)
~~ PT (putter)
Press A to confirm and now to set your stance... Press Right on the D-Pad to
set your stance so the ball will curve to the left; press Left on the D-Pad so
your stance will make the ball curve to the right. Remember, straight shots are
NOT necessarily the best thing. Even aiming into the wind won't necessarily
help; hence, this.
Press A to confirm and we'll now power the shot. See that moving dot in the
top-left part of the screen? This is for your power. You want it close to the
MAX, but not past.
Press A to confirm and we'll now DO the shot. As the club goes down, you want
to press A and stop it to hit the ball. There are three big spots to stop it
in. Look at the bottom-center of the circle. That black rectangle represents a
perfect hit; to its left puts backspin on the ball, which may slow it down or
stop prematurely; to the right, you'll get topspin which makes the ball move
further. You want to stop it somewhere in there, depending on the situation.
Anything else is a miss.
Continue this until you reach the green where the flag is.
Putting... A game all in itself. In general, you'll want to use the PT (putter)
for this, though it's not impossible to make it via the 1W (driver).
As before, you can look around and decide what direction to make the shot in.
Press A to be able to determine that, then again to confirm your decision.
Once you do, a power gauge appears on the right side of the screen. Press A to
start it; press A again to set the power and the shot will be made.
Once you make the ball into the hole, the score is calculated. The lower, the
better. If you made the shot in less than par, you'll get negative points
(which is good) equal to number of shots under you were; par, you get nothing;
above par, you get positive (bad) points.
After completing the hole, if applicable, you'll see the current standings.
Repeat until the game ends.
