01.) INTRODUCTION G0100
===============================================================================
Welcome to 'Track & Field' for the Game Boy released by Konami in 1992. It was
released as 'Konamic Sports in Barcelona' in Japan.
Suggestions, comments or errors - tell me about it. Enjoy!
===============================================================================
02.) BASICS G0200
===============================================================================
T&F is a simple yet sometimes challenging game. You will need to be good at
hitting those buttons fast.
Controls:
`````````
Each event uses different control methods which are explained before the event
starts.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TECHNIQUE G0210
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
T&F is all about speed and button bashing. Best way to get good speeds up
is to place the GameBoy on a hard surface where it does not move around. You
need to have both hands available and cannot hold the device in your palms
as you might want to.
The power/speed button is either A or B. Choose whichever fits better to your
style. Mashing this button quickly is the key to success. With the other hand
you need to keep on the D-pad to control whichever action is required for the
specific event. Quite often it is possible to let go of the A or B button to
press it, but not recommended for top results.
===============================================================================
03.) MAIN MENU G0300
===============================================================================
The Main Menu is simple: 3 Options to choose from.
First we have 1-Event Mode, where on can choose from any event in any order
and compete a single time.
Second there is Competition. One is required to go through the entire set of
events in sequence and gather points for an overall score. This is like the
heptathlon in modern olympics.
Lastly, the Versus mode for playing against another real life person instead of
just the CPU. This requires the Link Cable!
===============================================================================
04.) EVENTS G0400
===============================================================================
The core part of the guide: the events. There are 11 events in total. Not all
are part of Track & Field are athletics but all are olympic sports.
In each event you can gain points, they are only useful in Arcade mode or for
your personal enjoyment.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
100m Dash G0401
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Default World Record: 9sec85
Controls:
`````````
A / B to run.
There isn't much else to it than running. Get the button bashing started as
soon as that third light shows up.
Keep in mind, 3 fault starts and you are disqualified.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Long Jump G0402
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Default World Record: 8m95
Controls:
`````````
A / B to run.
D-Pad to angle the jump.
Start running at any time you want, there is no clock. Build up speed with the
run button and when you get to the jump block, hold a direction on the D-pad
to get as close to 45-degrees as you can. Now watch your athlete jump the
distance.
You get 3 jump attempts and the longest will count.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hammer Throw G0403
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Default World Record: 86m34
Controls:
`````````
A / B to build up power. Or so it says, the game actually does this
automatically so just control the angle. Press one of the buttons to get the
swing started, however.
D-Pad to throw at an angle.
As mentioned above, you only need to look out for the power bars to hit the
middle. After a couple of turns they will do so but if you do not hit the
D-pad by then the athlete will swing out, resulting in a foul. Thus the aim
is to get the power bars as close to the middle as possible and then throw
at a 45-degree angle. This will result in a very far throw.
You get 3 throwing attempts and the longest will count.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
110m Hurdles G0404
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Default World Record: 12sec92
Controls:
`````````
A / B to run.
D-Pad to jump.
Running is the same as in the 100m dash. However, the hurdles make this a bit
more difficult. You need to jump with the D-pad as close to the hurdles as
possible or you will jump into them. If you do it too late the athlete will
fall on his nose and take a long time to get up, most likely resulting in a
zero point score.
Keep in mind, 3 fault starts and you are disqualified.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Javelin Throw G0405
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Default World Record: 96m96
Controls:
`````````
A / B to run.
D-Pad to angle the throw.
Start running where the speed bar has a little wedge. This is the speed you
want to run at, not faster and not slower either. At the very end of the
runway, press the D-pad to control the angle of the javelin. This should be
best at 45-degrees. You will notice you cannot do this before the runway ends,
but do it too late and the athlete will simply run into the grass, resulting
in a foul.
You get 3 throwing attempts and the longest will count.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Weight Lifting G0406
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Default World Record: 280kg
Controls:
`````````
A / B to build up power.
D-Pad to lift.
After selecting the weight, start the lifting by hitting the power button.
The first bar needs to be reached and then UP sign will flash rapidly. Press
the D-pad to lift the weights on the athlete's shoulders. Then the same
process will start over to stand up with the weights on the shoulder. Next
the bar will raise the weights over the head. Until this time there was no
time limit but once they are in the air, the power bar will need to be at or
above the minimum level for three seconds. You will hear the chimes counting.
The maximum weight (350kg) requires the bar to be at its maximum to be lifted.
You have three attempt to lift weights. The best will count towards the score.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Archery G0407
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Default World Record: 56p
Controls:
`````````
A / B to draw the bow.
D-Pad to set the angle.
There are six rounds shooting an arrow at a 30 or 70m distant board. The
circles are 10 points for a bulls eye and -1 point for each ring further
out or so. This isn't very accurate, you have to visualize that the edge of
a ring is less points than the same ring closer to the middle. Therefore
the maximum points one can score is 60.
Compensate for the wind by aiming left, right and/or up. The more power you
use for a shot will also influence the flying direction.
After setting the direction, hold down A or B until your desired power, then
let go.
The top view shows the direction the arrow is going, whereas the lower one the
height.
It is very difficult to know how much to compensate for the wind, practice
makes perfect. Eventually you will get a feel of how much each situation needs
adjustment.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Triple Jump G0408
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Default World Record: 17m97
Controls:
`````````
A / B to run.
D-Pad to angle the jumps.
Similar to the Long Jump, you start by building up as much speed as possible
until reaching the jump pad. Jump off at a 45-degree angle and continue this
two more times. You can hold down the D-pad already when the jumper is in the
air, but if you do it too late he will stop on the track. You need to make it
into the sand box (13m) or the jump will be a foul.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Swimming G0409
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Default World Record: 48sec63
Controls:
`````````
A / B to swim.
D-Pad to breathe.
Wait for the signal and start swimming at the third beep. Simply keep this
going for the entire race. Additionally, every so often the swimming needs to
lift his head to breathe. When he does, a small arrow will be above his head.
Press the D-pad to do so. The longer the delay between the first time the
arrow appears and takes a breath, the more speed will be lost. You could
also breathe earlier than when the arrow says, losing less speed than a long
delay, but it could end up requiring more breathers for the entire race thus
losing overall time.
Keep in mind, 3 fault starts and you are disqualified.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Discus Throw G0410
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Default World Record: 74m08
Controls:
`````````
A / B to build up power.
D-Pad to angle the throw.
After the signal start building up power until the bar is as close to the
maximum you can get. The thrower only swings around once and will then need
to release the disc, so on the second time around, tap the D-pad and select
the angle you want to throw at. Unlike other events I have found that 50
degrees will achieve the best results.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pole Vault G0411
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pole Vault:
```````````
Default World Record: 6m10
Controls:
A / B to run.
D-Pad to plant the pole and release.
Start running and keep the speed bar at the small wedge around 95%. Once
you reach the end of the track, plant the pole with the D-pad as close to the
mat as possible. If you do it too late, the jumper will foul. Once you in the
air, use the D-pad again to release from the pole and jump over the bar. This
one isn't too easy.
===============================================================================
05.) 1 EVENT MODE G0500
===============================================================================
Select one of the eleven events and compete in it once. Afterwards you will
get the choice to continue playing it, select another event or return to the
main title.
===============================================================================
06.) COMPETITION MODE G0600
===============================================================================
Competition mode takes you through all eleven events in sequence, starting
with the 100m dash and ending with the pole vault. Each event's point score
will be accumulated for a final score. The highest final score to achieve is
11,000 points.
The default high scores:
1. CR 10000
2. GF 9200
3. SB 8400
4. MP 7600
5. ST 6800
===============================================================================
07.) VERSUS MODE G0700
===============================================================================
Versus mode makes use of the Gameboy's Link Cable. Connect the two Gameboys
together and select "Versus" from the main menu. You can now compete against
another person and it is a lot more fun for events like 100m.
===============================================================================
08.) POINT FORMULAE G0800
===============================================================================
All events give you points. Below are some of the higest and lowest points
to achieve, as well as the formula to calculate the rest of the results.
¬ denotes the highest and lowest end of the scores have been reached. Faster,
longer / slower, shorter results than those will simply result in the same
amount of points before/after the ¬.

09.) EASTER EGGS G0900
===============================================================================
Easter Eggs:
````````````
Most Track & Field games have some sort of easter egg, this game is no
different.
*Flowers
During the Archery event, hit the ground between the 40 and 50 meter lines of
the 70 meter distance. Two flowers will pop out of the ground.
*Frog
During the Triple Jump, if you land a few meters short of the sand box, a
frog will pop out from the hole you created.
*UFO
During the hammer throw, let go at maximum power and toss it at an 80-degree
angle. You will hit a U.F.O. This is actually the only way to get really low
scores on this event.
===============================================================================
10.) FAQ G1000
===============================================================================
i) Q: The frog does not appear like you said it would?
A: This is a little more random. Just keep trying.
ii) Q: Is there a way to quit during the events?
A: Nope.
